Al Maxey Immersed by One Spirit

1Cor. 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to DRINK into one Spirit.

Although there is no evidence in Corinth, only ONE Spiritual Gift was given by the HANDS of an Apostle. For instance,

1Cor. 12:8 For to BY ONE is given BY the Spirit the WORD of wisdom;

The Word or Logos is the Regulative Principle: it outlaws personal opinion. personal experiences, rhetoric, singing, Playing instruments, Acting or PAY TO PLAY.

        to ANOTHER the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; [of Christ]

No one had a supernatural, temporary Gift for their own exhibition. All of the congregation are immersed into ONE and each gift is to SPEAK THE WORD by Divine Power.

Al Maxey:
You and I, as the children of our heavenly Father, have been "called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord" [1 Corinthians 1:9]. Therefore, the apostle Paul entreats this vast called out group of brethren to "walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called" [Ephesians 4:1], "being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" [vs. 3].
1Corinthians 1:1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
1Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth,
        to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, [Receiving A holy spirit]
        called to be saints, with all that in every place
        call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
1Corinthians 1:3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
1Corinthians 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God
        which is given you by Jesus Christ;
1Corinthians 1:5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him,
         in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
1Corinthians 1:6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
The Spirit of the prophets and the Spirit of Prophecy is the Testimony of Christ.
Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which
        are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.
        And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him.
        And he said unto me, See thou do it not:
        I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus:
        worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Only at baptism does Jesus as The Holy Spirit was us and clothe us with the wedding garment.

By being baptized INTO Christ we are CLOTHED with Him. The redemption of sins is only for those who have let Him put on the wedding garment and make one a member of HIS Church which is HIS Body. Or, they have put on the scholar's frock.

No one can receive the wedding garment and follow false teachers:
Matthew 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests,
        he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
Matthew 22:12 And he saith unto him,
        Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?
        And he was speechless.
Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants,
        Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness;
        there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
The disunity in Corinth was based totally upon the name of the individual who baptized the into water.
1Corinthians 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift;
        waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
1Corinthians 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end,
        that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful,
        by whom ye were called unto the fellowship
        of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
1Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
        that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you;
        but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment
Paul defined the PATTERN in Romans 15: we are to use ONE mind and ONE mouth to speak that which is written for OUR learning. The pattern is that those who "imagine" or self-speak Jesus says are the sons of the Devil.

The spirit or mental disposition of the church in Corinth proved that they had not been immersed by Jesus Christ into that one spirit.
1Corinthians 1:11 For it hath been declared unto me of you,
        my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe,
        that there are contentions among you.
1Corinthians 1:12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith,
        I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Ch
rist.
1Corinthians 1:13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
1Corinthians 1:14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
1Corinthians 1:15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
1Corinthians 1:16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
1Corinthians 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel:
        not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
1Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;
        but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1Corinthians 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
        and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
1Corinthians 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe?
        where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

The Wise are the Sophists:

 -HH 4 483 What skill is this? What song for desperate cares? What way of song? For verily here are three things to hand all at once from which to choose, —mirth, and love, and sweet sleep. [450] And though I am a follower of the Olympian Muses who love dances and the bright path of song —the full-toned chant and ravishing thrill of flutes —yet I never cared for any of those feats of skill at young men's revels, as I do now for this:

Christ in Ezekiel 33 said that the Scribes were hypocrites: sself-speakers, singers and instrument players.

He warned about the "lying pen of the Scribes" then and now.

Al Maxey: [Ephesians 4:1], "being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" [vs. 3].

There are no upper case "S"pirits in the Bible.  Spirit means wind and the BREATH: Jesus BREATHED on the Apostles.

Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation
        wherewith ye are called,
Ephesians 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
Ephesians 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Ephesians 4:4 There is one body,
        and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

Spirit is not a "people" which would identify anti-Christ: spirit is connected to body, hope and calling.

Christ is the HEAD of His Church or His Body: It is the Spirit OF CHRIST OR CHRIST now The Holy Spirit who governs His body.

Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Then there are not THREE GODS or GOD PERSONS.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
        that God
        hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified,
        both Lord and Christ.

The NAME of the Holy Spirit is Jesus Christ: He has all authority and only He can give gifts.
1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
        And if any man sin,
        we have an advocate with the Father,
        Jesus Christ the righteous:
1John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4 He that saith,
         I know him, and keepeth not his commandments,
        is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected:
        hereby know we that we are in him.

2Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2Cor. 3:18 But we all,
        with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
        are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
        even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
These Gifts of the Spirit are the Gifts OF Christ Who in His post-resurrection, glorified state is now in the promised Holy Spirit Who poured out that which was seen and heard: fire and WIND.
Ephesians 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure
        of the gift of Christ. [The Holy Spirit 1 Jn 2]
Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high,
         he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
Ephesians 4:9 (Now that he ascended,
        what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Ephesians 4:10 He that descended
        is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
         and some, pastors and teachers;
Ephesians 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints,
         for the work of the ministry,
         for the edifying of the body of Christ: [educating: not entertaining]
Ephesians 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith,
        and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man,
        unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Al Maxey: "There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling" [Ephesians 4:4]. Our Lord never called us to be squabbling siblings, feuding factionists, or sectarian schismatics. Rather, we were called to be a unified whole: One Body ... a fully functional Family. If our Lord Jesus Christ prayed for unity among believers, and if He shed His precious blood to break down those barriers that divide men from one another, then He must have considered our oneness to be absolutely essential. Indeed, as already noted, He informed His disciples that whether or not the world believed would be conditioned upon whether or not we are unified.
Why do you think people lie to God and about God and lie about all of the 'instrument' passages deliberately  trying to sow discord?

The squabbling siblings are those who deny the Word of Christ and make a living out of inventing dogma: as the dogma of Christ's Spirit being separated from Christ is such childish cunning craftness.

Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro,
        and carried about with every wind of doctrine,
        by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness
whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

The feuding factionists just fabricate their own facts:

        seemeth to be wise in this world,
        let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
1Cor. 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God.
        For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
1Cor. 3:20 And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters,

        and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee;

        for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Revelation 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets,
        and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
Al Maxey: So, how do we accomplish this? By forcing those around us to submit to our endless Partisan Perceptions and Precepts? By an imposed uniformity of traditional practice? Are we unified only when everyone goosesteps in unison to the most vocal, vicious and narrow-minded among us? Is the key to harmony an iron fist?

Most church division has been caused by IMPOSING or FORCING people to profane the assembly while giving their attention to less-than-talented craftsmen:

JESUS HAD A PATTERN: HE WAS A PATTERNIST (Type intended to be imitated): it did not include gooseclapping.

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on ME through THEIR WORD; John 17:20

Al Maxey: The solution, of course, is partly in redirecting our focus. We must get our eyes off some elusive humanly-perceived pattern – derived largely from mere assumptions – and direct them toward the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus never preached "the person of Jesus Christ." He and everyone else preached the gospel OF THE KINGDOM. The good news is of the CHURCH which has just ONE PIECE IN ITS PATTERN.
Ephesians 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints,
        is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
Ephesians 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery,
        which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God,
        who created all things by Jesus Christ:
Ephesians 3:10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places
        might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,
Ephesians 3:11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

Al Maxey: It is a "unity of the Spirit" that will ultimately prove to be transforming, not this futile quest to force the Family of God into some form of our own devising. Our unity, therefore, is not based upon what we do, but rather upon who we are. And the force that brings this oneness to His universal Body is none other than the Holy Spirit.

Here is the only way to be transformed:
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Alexander Campbell

When Jesus prayed (John xvii.) for the sanctification or holiness of his disciples,
          it was through the truth: "Sanctify them through the truth;
          thy word is truth."

The belief of the truth is, therefore, by Paul associated with this holiness or sanctification of spirit.

Because there is only ONE BAPTISM which is immersion in water, those who have been so SEALED at baptism will be unified because they will not "go beyond that which is written" They will PREACH the Word by READING the Word and discussing it. That was the patternism Christ established for the Church of Christ in its Wilderness and settle form.

Al Maxey:  I believe we too often discount the operation of the Spirit among the called out people of God. He has been given for a purpose, and far too many disciples, especially within our own faith-heritage (the Stone-Campbell Movement), have sought to utterly remove the Holy Spirit as the vital life-giving, unifying force within the Lord's One Body. This is a grave error, and the result has been apparent to the world about us. Rather than believing, they merely mock. Who wants to be part of a dismembered, dysfunctional Body? Brethren, it is time once more to be indwelt, empowered and led by the Holy Spirit.

The holy spirit is the Spirit OF Christ or the MIND of Christ: no one spoke of the Spirit as a part of a God Family.
There is ONE GOD the Father and ONE SON Jesus Christ "Whom God made TO BE both Lord and Christ." Spirit is that symbolic BREATH which passes from the ONE Speaker to the faithful hearer.

Al Maxey: The apostle Paul wrote to a group of believers who were struggling greatly with themselves, saying, "Just as there is one body that has many members, and all of the many members of the body are one body, so also is Christ; for we were all immersed into the one body by the one Spirit, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free men; and we all have been given to drink of one Spirit" [1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Hugo McCord's New Testament Translation of the Everlasting Gospel]. Not a few biblical interpreters have taken the view that this passage is sacramental in nature. In other words, the baptism mentioned is water baptism and the drink has reference to the cup of the Lord's Supper.

That ONE SPIRIT is the ONE WORD of Christ in the prophets and apostles.

John 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life;

1Corinthians 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.
Al Maxey: Thus, by the agency of the Holy Spirit we are all completely plunged into (immersed into) the Lord Jesus, with all who are thus incorporated into Him constituting the One Body universal of our Lord on earth.

Spirit never speaks of a person or a PEOPLE.  The Spirit OF (preposition) of Christ is the Mind of Christ (1 Cor 2).  Because Jesus Christ IS the Spirit were are baptized BY CHRIST into HIS body.

Al Maxey:  This passage, therefore, has nothing whatsoever to do with water baptism, but has everything to do with the power of the Holy Spirit to unite us with the Son of God, and in so doing to unite us with all others the world over who also have been added to Him. It is "the unity of the Spirit."

First, The Holy Spirit is GOD who is Wholly Spirit
Or, it is the spirit of a believer made holy only by baptism

Walter Scott wrote

Again--Some will say, What does the expression Holy Spirit mean? Well, in scripture

it stands first for God the Holy Spirit,
and secondly for the
HOLY MIND or SPIRIT of A believer-

for illustration, take Peter's words to Ananias, "Why has Satan tempted you to lie to the Holy Spirit; you have not lied to men, but to God," (the Holy Spirit.)

And the Saviour says, How much more will your heavenly Father give A holy spirit (as it should be translated) to those that ask him. Again--Praying in A holy spirit.

Again--Paul says he approved himself God's servant "by knowledge, by long sufferings, by kindness, by A holy spirit'" i. e. by a mind innocent of the love of GAIN, or commerce, or sensuality.

Now then the expression stands for both God the Holy Spirit, and for a believer's spirit made holy by him. I shall now answer, from scripture, the following questions.--

When do we know that we are born of the Spirit?
        I answer, when we know that
our spirits are holy

But it will be asked again, when do we know this?
        I reply, when we behold
our minds producing the fruits of A holy spirit.

Alexander Campbell and others understand that A holy spirit is OUR unholy spirit which has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and not His "spirit."

This is...understood by every attentive reader. The original phrase is hagiasmos pneumatos, and is found only in II. Thess. ii. 13; I. Pet. i. 2. In both places it appears to refer to the sanctification of the spirit of believers.   It is literally rendered "sanctification [or holiness] of spirit." There is no article in the original and no epithet that suggests the Holy Spirit in either passage.

God has chosen men to salvation through (or by) holiness of spirit;

not through the holiness of his Spirit,
        but through the holiness of their spirit.

When Jesus prayed (John xvii.) for the sanctification or holiness of his disciples,
          it was through the truth: "Sanctify them through the truth;
          thy word is truth."

The belief of the truth is, therefore, by Paul associated with this holiness or sanctification of spirit.

The Spirit of God is frequently denominated in these days, "the Sanctifier." Let it be granted that it is the Spirit that sanctifies or sets apart men to God, still it must be argued from the Record that he sanctifies them only through the truth or gospel believed.
A sanctified unbeliever is inconceivable;
        and, as "without holiness [or sanctification of spirit] no man can see the Lord;
        so, without faith, there can be no holiness, and no action acceptable to God.

All persons sanctified to God to any high office or function, were anointed, and thus consecrated to his special service. So all Christians, being priests,

        are anointed or sanctified by the Holy Spirit
       [135] through the obedience of the truth,
        and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus,
        cleansing their consciences from dead works to serve the living God.
Al Maxey: As the passage states, "we were all immersed into the one body BY the one Spirit." This is an "immersion" effected BY the Holy Spirit, the purpose of which is to unite the many diverse parts into a unified, harmonious, functional whole body.

We are immersed into the ONE BODY the Church of Christ by Jesus Christ who IS the only Holy Spirit Comforter after His resurrection and glorification and return at Pentecost to "pour out what you see and hear."

Spirit NEVER speaks of a PEOPLE but their mind or mental disposition: Jesus Christ inducted us INTO His clothing of Righteousness where our spirits are translated into a heavenly or spiritual kingdom.

Al Maxey: There are a couple of companion passages that I strongly believe provide us some additional insight into the thinking of the apostle Paul on this matter. "For as many of you as were immersed into Christ clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is not male and female, for you are all united in Christ Jesus" [Galatians 3:27-28, Hugo McCord's Translation]. Many translations render the final phrase: "For you are all one in Christ Jesus." This is essentially the same message as that found in 1 Corinthians 12:13.
Gal. 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 (What I mean to say is) as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

[27] quicumque enim in Christo baptizati estis Christum induistis

Cic. Off. 1.39 13. Again, if under stress of circumstances individuals have made any promise to the enemy, they are bound to keep their word even then.
For instance, in the First Punic War, when Regulus was taken prisoner by the Carthaginians, he was sent to Rome on parole to negotiate an exchange of prisoners;
We are baptized INTO CHRIST: it would be silly to say that the Spirit OF (preposition) Christ immerses us INTO Christ.

Al Maxey:  Does this perception in any way whatsoever diminish the place of water baptism as a visible demonstration of faith; as an evidence essential to our faith response? Of course not. I am in no way whatsoever suggesting such a thing. I am merely suggesting that perhaps we have misapplied the above passages in our zeal to prove a particular doctrine and practice that, frankly, if one is not careful, can be easily given improper emphasis and thereby abused.

The Bible presents Baptism as the Christ-Ordained INSTRUMENTAL MEANS by which He grants admittance into His Churh, His Body, His School (only) of the Word (only).

The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth is the TYPE or pattern to be imitated.  Only those who have OBEYED that pattern are THEN free from sin.

Jesus said that he that believeth AND is baptized SHALL be saved.  Baptism does not just demonstrate faith: faith gives us the right to call on the name of the Lord only at baptism.  Al Maxey follows Edward Fudge who dogmatically states:

Edward Fudge: The Bible does not contain the word "essential," since it is written
in the language of story rather than of theology or debate.

Jesus said that those who "believeth not" or Apistos SHALL BE DAMNED.  The damned are those

who claim that when Jesus said "the that believeth (complieth) AND is baptized SHALL BE saved
that was not
essential.  That is defined as blasphemy by the Spirit OF Christ in Jeremiah 33.

A similar passage for those who do not depend on Scripture is:

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:
        and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life;
        but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Believeth not always means

This is proven by most translations:
