The path to fame and fortune in religion is to mock and
repudiate the Historic Church first defined for the wilderness
whose simple pattern never changed: this was the way to remove
laded burdens by removing burden laders. All you have to
do is spread hatred toward those who do not bow to BEGIN
something they have never done and do not intend to change
with culture and deny that God as WORD or LOGOS in connection
with His education and commanding which would be
blasphemy

Allan Stanglin:
Rick Atchley takes a well known Restoration Movement
slogan and updates it to reflect our most recent history:
“We speak where the Bible speaks, and where the Bible is
silent, we speak even more.” Oh, yeah, the silence of
Scripture — is it permissive or prohibitive?
If we’re honest,
most of us decide based on the issue of the moment
and/or our own
comfort zones.
Strange, but that never really was a question that
concerned anybody in our churches
until right after
the Civil War when
we were looking to DIVIDE

to HUMBLE
others and make OURSELVES feel better.
Jude defines men rejecting
the WORD and turning to MUSIC as FOREORDAINED at
WINTERFEST:
"This valley was early
selected as the seat of the worship of Moloch, where his rites were celebrated by
erecting a huge brazen image with a hollow trunk and arms, which
was heated, and within which, or on the arms of
which, children were placed as a sacrifice to the
horrid idol. To drown their cries, drums were beaten, which were called Tophim." (Barnes,
Isaiah 33, p. 463). Tabret and
Topheth has the same root meaning.
And his breath [SPIRIT], as rushing water in a valley, reach reach as

Isaiah 30:29 LX

SCRIPTURE AND RECORDED HISTORY CALLS IT SORCERY:
Rubel Shelly spoke of the Aztecs who slipped into other
people's land, planted corn and when it was about RIPE they
invaded other peoples country. Shelly says that the
OWNERS MOUNTED AN ATTACK AGAINST THE INVADERS. When
people mock Scripture and recorded history it is clear that
COMFORT ZONES are worth sowing discord and stealing the
church house and family of weeping widows.
The year is 1847. Rev.
Daniel Payne is the pastor of Bethel. He has been an
educator since 1829 and an ordained minister since 1839.
At Bethel he conducted schools for Baltimore children and
had always stressed the need for an educated ministry. He
is responsible for purchasing the organ that was
used during worship in 1847. Thus, Bethel Baltimore became
the first A.M.E. Church to have instrumental music during
church services. The same organ is on display in the
Bethel Museum.

MUSICAL DISCORDERS SET THEIR LIES TO
MELODIES TO HIDE THE WORD OF GOD
Aristotle:
Melody Deceives: "Poets also make use of this in inventing
words, as a
melody "without strings" or "without the lyre"; for they employ epithets from
negations, a course which is approved in proportional
metaphors..
- The form of diction should be neither metrical nor without rhythm.
- If it is metrical, it lacks persuasiveness, for it appears artificial, and at the same time it distracts the hearer's
attention,
since it sets him on the watch for the recurrence of such and such a cadence..
According to Philo, the gods of the pagans exploit this weakness of men.
For the sake of a better effect, and with the intention of more
easily cheating their devotes, that they have set their lies
to melodies, rhythms and meters.." Click for more.
MUSICAL DISCORDERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN
GENDER-COMPROMISED AND THE SUBJECT OF LOTS OF JOKES:
"Philodemos considered it paradoxical that
music should be regarded as veneration of the gods while
musicians were paid for performing this so-called veneration.
Again, Philodemus held as self-deceptive the view that music mediated
religious ecstasy. He saw the entire condition induced by the
noise of cymbals and tambourines as
a disturbance
of the spirit. (Paul called it
mad or insane) He found it significant
that, on the whole, only women and effeminate men fell
into this folly."
MUSIC MEANS "TO MAKE THE
LAMBS DUMB BEFORE THE SLAUGHTER": IT WORKS
Aristot.
Nic. Eth. 1175b.1
But things that are akin to things of
different kinds must themselves differ in kind.
[3] A still clearer proof may be drawn
from the hindrance
that activities
receive from the pleasure
derived from other activities.
Self-pleasure in Romans 15 is identified by rhetoric,
singing, playing, dancing or drama which creates "mental
excitement" which is the "laded burden" Jesus died to remove
meaning "spiritual anxiety created by religious ritual." The
BURDEN in Hebrew, Greek and Latin identifies the performance
or hypocritic arts and crafts INTENDING to "make the lambs
dumb before the slaughter.
For instance, persons fond of the flute
cannot give their attention to a philosophical
discussion [The LOGOS or Regulative Principle]
when they overhear someone playing the flute,
because they enjoy music more than the activity in
which they are engaged;
therefore the pleasure
afforded by the music of the flute
impairs the activity of
study.
[4] The same
thing occurs in other cases when a man tries to do two
things at once; the pleasanter activity drives
out the other, the more so if it is much more pleasant,
until the other activity ceases altogether.
Hence, when we enjoy something very much,
we can hardly do anything else; and when we find a thing only
mildly agreeable, we turn to some other occupation; for
instance, people who eat sweets at the theater do so
especially when the acting is bad.
[ 5] And since our activities [of
the flute] are sharpened, prolonged and improved by
their own pleasure, and impaired by the pleasures of other
activities, it is clear that pleasures differ widely from each
other. In fact alien pleasures have almost the same effect on
the activities as their own pains; since, when an activity
causes pain, this pain destroys it, for instance, if a person
finds writing or doing sums unpleasant and irksome; for he stops writing or doing sums, because
the activity is painful.

never really was a

that concerned anybody in our churches until right
after the Civil War when we were
looking to divide and punish, to humble others and
make ourselves feel better.
That may be
true but the Disciples clearly intended to humble the
south: with one exception all of the Disciples
scholars rejected using "machines for doing hard work" in
what Christ and the Campbells called A School of Christ. The
fact is that the northern Disciples were profiteers or
carpetbaggers and after the War had a huge fortune. That led
to the Worship Race ONLY in the North where everyone had to
outdo one another with their phallic symbolsl. After
the carpet bags went dry many of the huge buildings were
doomed, as an elder confessed to J.W..McGarvey either IMPOSE
musical performance or lose their property.

The REGULATIVE PRINCIPLE AND

OPPOSITE to rhetoric, singing, playing or acting.
God reserves the right to
Command, Example, Infer or even HINT for an honest Disciple.
Christ in the wilderness commanded that the Word be PREACHED
by READING the Word: Elders as the only Pastor-teacher in A
church of Christ is commanded to teach that which has been
taught. The Campellls tried to restore the wilderness
pattern:
Church is A School of Christ: so
says the Bible over and over.
Worship is Reading and Musing (mele
not melos or melody) the Word.
The Bible is not silent:
everyone is to speak the same things by speaking that which
is written for our learning.
The Stoneites held
absolutely nothing in common with the Campbells until the
Christian Churches finally sected out of the Disciples
beginning in 1927 and ending in 1971. At that time the
so-called Stone-Campbell Movement began again to confiscate
churches of Christ. No Christian church has ever
proposed Biblical unity but the intention has been by using
a few dupes to as they boast 'infiltrate and divert."
Allan Stanglin: The Civil War
and the resulting hatred and
bitterness that
lingered into and through Reconstruction in the South played a critical
and undeniable role in the
divisions among the Stone – Campbell churches that
ultimately led to the official “split” between the Disciples
of Christ and the Churches of Christ.
Churches of Christ continued to NOT DO what they had never
in recorded history DONE. Why would they NOT do
something they had NEVER DONE because they were HATEFUL AND
BITTER? This is called psychological violence: you are
supposed to be DISSOCIATED and come to HATE those who refuse
to violate direct commands. Hitler could not have done a
better job in Mein Kampf when He used his SEEKER SYSTEM.
If you are honest you can read the history surrounding
a few men shaking hands in 1832 agreeing to ASSEMBLY
TOGETHER based on the signed agreement with exactly agreed
with the Commands, Examples and Inferences docummented from
Genesis to Revelation and all historic Scholars and men who
could understand that A Church of Christ is a Schoool of
Christ which is ANTITHETICAL to the worship services of the
Jacob-cursed and God-Abandoned Levites: the Levites
performed as soothsayers or SORCERERS in the NOT-commanded
Civil-Military-Clergy Complex abandoned to worship the
starry host: so sorry that Allan missed Acts 7, 1
Corinthians 10 and Romans ten where the Instrumental
Idolatry at Mount Sinai caused God to sentence the
Israelites beyond Babylon for captivity and death.
There
is
strong evidence that Mr. Campbell did not favor the
so-called union.
In The Christian
Messenger
for November, 1834, is quoted an article from the Millennial
Harbinger
(Campbell's paper) as follows:
"Or
does he (Stone) think that one or two individuals,
of and for themselves, should propose and
effect a formal union among the hundred of
congregations scattered over this continent,
called Christians or Disciples, without calling
upon the different congregations to express an opinion
or a wish upon the subject?
We
discover, or think we discover, a squinting at
[14] some sort of precedency or priority in the
claims of the writer of the above article," etc.
It is well known that Mr.
Campbell insisted upon immersion before believers were
received into fellowship, to which Stone answered:
"We cannot, with our present views,
unite on the opinions that unimmersed
persons cannot receive remission of sins."
And though later on he came to believe in immersion
in water for the remission of sins, there is no evidence
that he ever made it a test of fellowship, without which
he could not have been a member of the Disciples of Christ.
Allan Stanglin: To deny this
would be to ignore the evidence. Similar splits along North
and South lines occurred in the Methodist, Baptist, and
Presbyterian denominations at the same times. And, no, we were
not immune.
On the contrary, history well documents that the Civil
War did NOT have anything to do with the South being Bible
literate and rejecting the Idolatry of Musical Worship which
is Babylonian. It is noted that the war did not divide
the Diciples/Christians. However, what became Churches
of Christ were called Reformed Baptists and the Baptists
began to split over instruments in about 1900.
Churches of Christ by that name ALWAYS rejected the
performing arts and ARTISTS and always believed Jesus when
He connected salvation to baptism. To ENDORSE the Baptists
is to endorse what APISTOS defines as treacher and
rebellion. One suspects that Allan Stangle is a
Stalking Horse for the Baptists as was Max Lucado, Mark
Henderson and others. Rick Atchley took about 12 years to
out his HIDDEN AGENDA as a stalking horse for the Christian
Church.
Allan Stanglin: As
further proof, Holloway and Foster’s Renewing God’s People offers up the
issues of instrumental music in corporate worship and the
American Christian Missionary Society.

Gary Holloway now heads the

History of the Stone Campbell Movement This

feed their face.
Foster And Holloway are simply ignorant of the facts.
Churches of Christ built on John Calvin's urge to Restore
the Church of Christ: that Restoration Movement rejected the
Catholic's use of the organ in the assembly. However,
the Catholics never used the organ to Accompany
Congregatioal singing. Stanglin does not know that there is
no command, example or remote inference in the Bible of God
calling the GODLY people out of their REST to "sing
congregationally with or without instruments." The opposite
is a fact: Instruments were permitted for the
Civil-Military-Complex because God had ABANDONED them to
Babylonianism. Singing in a TUNEFUL sense was
IMPOSSIBLE because "Melody as tunefulness belongs to the
19th century" and because there is NO METRICAL material in
the Bible. The command for the Stanglins was to
PREACH the Word by READING the Word for comfort and
doctrine. We have to conclude that, like Judas, he has
denied the Word so that the SOP or PSALLO word has been HAND
FED so that Satan came into him.
Allan Stanglin: While the
centralized missionary organization had its detractors almost
as soon as it was established in 1849, the Missionary Society
was not something over which anybody in a Stone-Campbell
church would have fought or divided Until after the Civil War.
The Stone-Campbell Church is a really bad lie: The
Campbells were never united with the Stoneites and there was
not a single Biblical doctrine held in common. If they
NEVER unioned with the Disciples then it is a lie to say
that they DISUNIONED. In a given congregation when the
Disciples imposed the organ and drove out THEIR MEMEMBERS
then those who knew that instruments meant soothsaying or
sorcery simple refused to visit THEIR congregation.
That's untrue: in my better days, I would call it a
lie. It's true that it had nothing to do with the
Reformed Baptists at that time or Churches of Christ but it
DID sow discord among the Disciples-Christians.
William J. Nottingham Global
Ministries.
"My point here is that the first missionary
society was the product of a long and intense
process which generated considerable soul-searching. There
were shared biblical principles and at the same time
fundamental differences in theological opinion.
Disagreement grew
concerning congregational ecclesiology,
commonality in mission with other
Christians,
and also perhaps communion of the Holy Spirit.
This tension would eventuate in separate
bodies and institutions of the 20th and 21st
centuries. [Disciples
and NACC] A full appreciation is probably hidden
from us in the distance from ante-bellum times. But the
nature of the Bible's authority,
the relatively new idea
of the autonomy of the local congregation,
and the centrality of
millennialist eschatology for these men and women,
with men doing most of the writing which is
left to us, seem to me to be mysteries that can only be
observed from different angles and rarely entered into
existentially by later generations like our own.
This is evidenced in the decisions concerning
missionaries growing out of this fervor leading up to
the Cincinnati convention: Dr. and Mrs. James T.
Barclay were the first. It was in their parlor in
Washington, D.C., 1843, that the congregation had been
organized which became the Vermont Avenue Church and in
1930 the National City Christian Church.
They went to Jerusalem, not because of
Acts 1:8 "beginning with Jerusalem" as a popular Disciples
legend has it, but
because it was taken for granted by Alexander Campbell
and his followers that the Jews were to be converted
before the return of Christ.
That was a false assumption: the Millenial
Harbinger's major thrust was not to SUPPORT Millerism but to defeat it. Campbell denies that
Jesus will return to Canaan. Because the Church of
Christ did not believe in William E. Miller [Ellen G.
White]. You will notice that it was the Disciples
who were tilted by Miller.
The title of Campbell's journal proclaimed
clearly the eschatology of the pre-Civil War spirituality,
so neglected in our denominational memory by scholars and
theologians since then.
Notice that Campbell spoke of THE PROTESTANT THEORY:
not his because he speaks where the Bible speaks and insists
on a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH and that you could not
convert people after the literal earth was burned up.
In the Millennial Harbinger of 1841,
we read in what is
called The Protestant Theory:
"The Millennium, so
far as the triumphs of Christianity is concerned, will
be a state of greatly enlarged and continuous
prosperity, in which the Lord will be exalted and his
divine spirit enjoyed in an unprecedented measure. All
the conditions of society will be vastly improved; wars
shall cease, and peace and good will among men will
generally abound. The Jews will be converted, and the
fullness of the Gentiles will be brought into the
kingdom of the Messiah."
The founding of the American Christian
Missionary Society cannot be separated from the millennialist
eschatology of the period

takes careful reading to grasp that Campbell REPUDIATES any
speculation.
The Disciples followed the Millerites: not
Campbell.
nor from the pragmatism which required a
foreign dimension to keep pace with other
denominations or to outgrow them! D.S. Burnet's
book The Jerusalem Mission and Dr. Barclay's book The
City of the Great King make this clear, along with
speeches and articles by various leaders like Isaac
Errett. Barclay wrote in a journal The Christian Age:
"The ACMS...resolved...
to make the first
offer of salvation to Israel. . .
for the salvation of
the Jews...
for upon the
conversion and resumption of Israel
AGAIN, THE TWO MOVEMENTS WERE NEVER UNITED WHICH WOULD
HAVE DEMANDED ORGANIZATION AND CREED WHICH THE REFORMERS
REJECTED. The fraternal agreement was possible until
the Missionary Society. The unity with the Baptists came to
an end when they caught on to the fact that Campell taught
that baptism was FOR or in order to salvation and the
Baptists with "no connection to the historic church" taught
salvation by THEIR faith only. Jesus calls them traitors and
treacherous but Stanglin probably has an agenda.
"Unity in the interest of betraya."
Allan Stanglin: Following the
Society’s pro-Union resolutions and its official support of
the United States military, it became the firestorm issue of
the Restoration Movement. To demonstrate how the War Between
the States had influenced feelings and thoughts, consider that
two of the Society’s most outspoken critics were former
officers of the organization. Tolbert Fanning served on the
board and even addressed its annual meeting in 1859. Benjamin
Franklin (no, not that one) served as the Society’s secretary
for thirteen years. But after the war they both repeatedly
blasted the group as unbiblical in Franklin’s American
Christian Review. Their main official objection was
based on the “silence of Scripture.”
But, they NEVER rejected the Society because they were
BITTER OVER THE WAR. As predicted, when the "society"
began to dabble with politics it PLANNED to sow discord and
made everyone aware that they could PROUNOUNCE on any
doctrinal issue and that possiton would be THE view of those
who paid their dues collected by extortion from their
members.
H. Leo Boles. In
Lexington, Ky., in 1832 to 1849. At that time in
Lexington my grandfather presented the New Testament
teaching for unity. He said, in part, the following:
"God has but one people on the
earth. He has given to them but one Book, and
therein exhorts and commands them to be one family. A union
such as we plead for--a union of God's people on that
one Book--must, then, be practicable.
"Every Christian desires to
stand complete in the whole will of God. The prayer
of the Savior, and the whole tenor of this teaching, clearly
show that it is God's will that his children should be
united. To the Christian, then, such a union must be
desirable.
"But an amalgamation of sects
is not such a union as Christ prayed for and God
enjoins. To agree to be one upon any system of human
inventions would be contrary to his will, and could
never be a blessing to the church or the world; therefore,
the only union practicable or desirable must be based
on the word of God as the only rule of faith and
practice...
"I have the more cheerfully
resolved on this course, because the gospel is a system of
facts, commands, and promises, and no deduction or inference
from them, however logical or true, forms any part of the
gospel of Jesus Christ. No heaven is promised to those who
hold them, and no hell is threatened to those who deny them.
They do not constitute, singly or together, an item of the ancient and apostolic gospel. While there is but one faith, there
may be ten thousand opinions; and, hence, if
Christians are ever to be one, they must be one in faith,
and not in opinion. When certain subjects arise, even in
conversation or social discussion, about which there is a
contrariety of opinion and sensitiveness of feeling, speak
of them in the words of the Scripture, and no offense
will be given and no pride of doctrine will be encouraged.
We may even come, in the end, by thus speaking the same
things, to think the same things.
"For several years past I have
stood pledged to meet the religious world, or any
part of it, on the ancient gospel and order of things as
presented in the words
of the Book. This is the foundation on which
Christians once stood, and on it they can, and ought to,
stand again.
From this I cannot depart to
meet any man, or set of men, in the wide world. While, for
the sake of peace and Christian union, I have long since
waived the public maintenance of any speculation I may hold,
yet no one gospel fact, commandment, or promise will I
surrender for the world" (Life of Elder
John
Smith, pages 452-454.)
This is
the ground of unity that was accepted in 1832
by the Stone and Campbell groups;
it is the fundamental teaching of the New Testament. Such
a unity honors the truth of
God, respects the authority
of Christ, and glorifies God.
Since Stanglin rejects God's right to Command, Example,
infer or even hint for a disciple OF Christ it is unethical
to appeal to there ever being UNITY between the groups.
Since the Bible does not
specifically mention anything about multi-church organizations
or boards that support a combined effort among different
congregations, they argued that the Missionary Society was
unscriptural. Of course, those who supported and served the
Society claimed that silence in Scripture is what gave them
permission to do it.
That's also false: men like Alexander Campbell
understood that any Organization intending to INCLUDE ALL OF
CHRISTENBDOM would become the thought leaders of ALL the
congregationa and corruption would spread. Jesus said
that the Kingdom of God does not come with OBSERVATION: that
means Religious Observations. He said DON'T GO where they
think they have the Kingdom collected; the Kingdomof God is
WITHIN you. Paul's letters inspired by Christ were
sent to ALL of the churches and he said that if any one
thought they were spiritual and had an imagination the HE
would write them another letter. God said that the
imagination of the human heart is only evil
continually. So, I recommend back to reading.
The same arguments were used in
debating the issue of
instrumental music in our corporate worship assemblies.
While the first recorded instance of an instrument used in
worship in a Stone-Campbell church was in Midway, Kentucky in 1859, it
really was a post-Civil War issue.
No literate Bible Student thinks that the Bible is
SILENT about using instrumental sounds in the School of the
Word where both the males and females are to sit down and
shut up so that WRATH or ORGY such as singing and playing
instruments would not break out: the ONLY reason for the
assembly was to learn so that "everyone would be saved and
come to a knowledge of the Truth." The Word of Christ is
TRUTH and songs and sermons are ANTI-truth.
The churches that brought in
pianos and organs argued that, since the Bible did not
prohibit it, they were permitted to use the instruments to
help their singing and to appeal to the younger generations.
The churches which IMPOSED instruments in Disciples of
Christ congregatiosn DROVE OUT large numbers of the owners.
There is no record of anyone even thinking that they should
be concerned with the Bible until massive division happened
IN THE NORTH. Lexington, Kentucky and Sand Creek
Illinois is in the NORTH according to my map. The opposition
in the South broke out when northern women clammored for a
Women's Society until they got the preacher fired. The
Christian Standard send a MISSIOBNARY into Nashvill with the
boast that "we will take Tennessee for the organ and society
party within five years."
Opposition to this “innovation”
came mostly from the South, and mostly from the same “silence of Scripture” argument.
The New Testament, they claimed, authorizes congregational
singing, but not musical instruments. On the other hand, those
who used instruments cited the same Bible verses that gave
them authority to use song books and song leaders and church
buildings to aid their worship: none.
That's because Paul commanded that we SPEAK that which
is written for our learning. The ANTITHESIS of the pagan
drunk on wine singing was the the ODE PSALLO be IN THE
HEART: In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul comanded that singing out of
their OWN spirit was just SINGING INTO THE AIR. The
Disciples claimed that GOD COMMANDED the use of Instruments:
Rick Atchley claims that a spirit told him that God
COMMANDED instruments. That's a lie of course. Faitful
Churches of Christ told them that they had NO COMMAND for
instruments and THEY were the ones who claimded that SILENCE
gave them permission tosow massive discord. They dredged up
the PSALLO Word for the first time in recorded history and
said THERE IS OUT AUTHOORITY.
Lard's Quarterly, Volume March
1864 These are now its spirit and law, and of
course, no offense to it. But despite of even these, for
now we care nothing for strife, nothing for the
feelings of the brethren, we shall insist on the
right both for self and others to introduce each for
himself the instrument with which he can best conduct
his worship. For the son of Mars, then, we claim
the right to introduce the fife and the drum;
and for the self the right to introduce, for I could
never make music on anything else, but am capital on
these, the Jews-harp, the tin-pan, and the barrel-head.
|
But what shall be done
with such churches? Of course nothing. If they see fit
to mortify the feelings of their brethren,
to forsake the example of the primitive churches,
to contemn the authority of Christ by resorting to will
worship, to excite dissension,
and give rise to general scandal, they must do
it.
With no right to speak at all, like J.W.McGarvey, Lard
explained that they should leave. Further
fellowship was precluded because getting "close" was
bound to get you taken captive. That danger still
exists.

Stark-Warlick
Debate: One of the most remarkable and
historic debates in which Warlick participated was
with J. C. Stark, November, 1903,
in Henderson, Tennessee, where the church had been
taken over by the digressives and the instrument
installed. J. C. Clark, of Christian Church
fame, was campaigning in West Tennessee, literally
bombarding the churches on the instrumental music
issue, an innovation threat to all the churches
of Christ west of the Tennessee River. Through the
solicitation of two young professors who were notable
in the effort to stay the tide of digression—A.
G. Freed and N.
B. Hardeman—Joe Warlick was brought from Texas
to Henderson to debate Stark. This debate
stopped the music movement and had it not been held
then, the history of churches in West Tennessee would
have been very different. This debate saved the church
from being swept into the Christian church
movement.
Stark: The
whole thing comes from a devilish, domineering
spirit, which, instead of worshiping God,
has taken God's seat in judgment to
control the praise others might bring It is
well enough to teach them: but "rebellion is as
the sin of witchcraft and stubborness is as
iniquity and idolatry." (1 Slam. 15:23) If taken
as he is to the "city of gold," he would surely
raise hell in heaven and make all "know and feel
what it is to be there."
It turns out that ALL musical terms and names of
instruments point to enchantment or WITCHCRAFT.

O.E.
Payne Foundational Document: But if it is
a self-appointed commission, as I believe it is, I
have as much right to offer suggestions as any one. If
this commission is calling in O. E. Payne's book on
the church-music question in order to destroy it, it
is working on the right line, and I want to commend
them; but if it is calling in these books in order to
give them to others and thus continue their
circulation, I suggest a change of name for the
commission. It should be called "The Commission on
Division" instead of "The Commission on Unity." I
doubt whether one church in fifty in this
country uses the instrument in their worship. If this
book is circulated and read and changes no one, it
could not assist in bringing about unity, because
we already have unity on that question in most
of the churches in these parts; but if it changes some
one and makes him believe that he ought to have the
instrument in worship, cannot this commission see that
this would bring about division. The instrument
would be forced into the worship by these new
converts made by Payne's book, which
would drive out those it did not convert,
and thus we would have division instead of unity as a
result of this work. Surely this commission could not
hope to change every one on this question with this
book and thus get every one wrong; but if it did not
change all, but changed any, it would cause
division instead of unity.

433 B.C. Herodotus (I, 155)
This noted traveler and scholar, known as the
father of history," and who was, as well, "the father
of geograypy," chronicles the conqueror's decree for
keeping the people of vassal states in subjection--a
method in vogue to this day:
"and bid them train their
sons to play the cithara and to play the
lyre [psallein] and to keep shop."
That is, forbid them the use of arms or weapons of
war, lest they rise in rebellion |
The
truth:
Grant, then, forgiveness to the
Lydians, and to make sure of
their never rebelling against thee, or alarming thee more,
send and forbid them to keep any weapons of
war,
command them to wear tunics under their cloaks,
and to put
buskins upon their legs,
and make them bring up their sons to cithern-playing (Kitharizein),
and singing
(psallein),
and shop-keeping (Hucksterism). [Corrupting the Word]
So
wilt
thou soon see them become
WOMEN instead of men,
and there will be no more fear of their revolting
from thee."
Croesus thought
the Lydians would even so be better off
than if they were sold for slaves, and therefore gave
the above advice to Cyrus, knowing that, unless he
brought forward some notable suggestion, he would not be able
to persuade him to alter his mind. He was likewise
afraid lest, after escaping the danger which now
pressed, the Lydians at some future time
might revolt from the Persians and so
bring themselves to ruin.

"corrupt the Word" meaning "selling learning at
retail" which means prostitution if you sell your
own body and words. |
More on Larimore later
The one man who might have done
the most to hasten the division among the Stone-Campbell
churches on these issues is Daniel Sommer who, in 1889,
outlined his plan to save the Restoration Movement from
“innovations and corruptions.” Unoriginally titled “An Address
and Declaration,” Sommer’s paper proclaimed that if leaders
and churches would not give up practices such as instrumental
music, support of the Missionary Society, located preachers,
and others, then “we cannot and will not regard them as
brethren.”
On the other end of that
attitude was a Stone-Campbell educator and preacher named T.
B. Larimore. He was baptized in Kentucky in 1864 and later
attended Franklin College near Nashville, studying under
Fanning. This loyal son of the South was influenced and taught
by some of the strongest opponents of instrumental music and
the Missionary Society, but he refused to ever take sides on
these issues. He never declared himself publicly. Larimore
believed God’s Church should never divide over such trivial
matters and, as a preacher of the Gospel, saw his duty as only
to proclaim the good news of salvation from God in Christ.
Larimore said he would have nothing to do with those questions
over which “the wisest and best of men disagreed.”
Larimore was a highly successful and
influential preacher. He baptized more than ten thousand
people in his lifetime. And he would preach wherever people
would listen. He was invited by both Churches of Christ and
Disciples of Christ and he honored each invitation. He wrote
articles and religious papers for both groups. As his
popularity grew he was pressured more and more to take sides
on the issues that divided the Movement, but he never did. He
only spoke well of people in both camps. In his words:
“I never call
Christians or others ‘anti’s,’ ‘digressives,’ ‘mossback,’
‘tackies,’ or ‘trash.’ I concede to all, and accord to
all, the same sincerity and courtesy as the Golden Rule
demands.”
I’m not sure what it means to be
called a “tackie” — only Doug Foster knows. But
Larimore’s legacy during one of the most contentious times in
our history is that he spoke only of matters of first
importance. He taught and lived, by word and deed, that the
only way for God’s Church to avoid the evils of division and
maintain Christ’s vision for unity was to allow freedom in
matters of opinion. And he kept on preaching.
Peace,
Allan
