The Gospel means freedom from human-imposed rules: To become a disciple of Christ one "enrolls" by believing in Him, redirecting our lives and confessing our faith in water baptism. You need no clergy or approval of a "gathered church" to become a Christian. The "gospel" and baptism according to some historical views:

Tertullian (155-220) The Necessity of Baptism for Salvation
Basil the Great (329 - 379) on Baptism Basil defines the universal understanding of the connection between Word, Spirit and Water until John Calvin's views were distorted.
John Calvin's Views
Martin Luther and Baptism: Whoever rejects Baptism rejects the Word of God, faith, and Christ, who directs us thither and binds us to Baptism. Faith only has meaning when faith has an object. Luther stresses the relationship of water and the Word.
But Zwingli Added Calvinistic predestination and came up with:
- Believer's Baptism - Zwingli - John Smyth And Pagan Baptism Erasmus' emphasis upon a rational interpretation of Luther's "faith only" led Zwingli in about 1500 to conclude that "if salvation was by grace, if even faith was a direct work of God by the Holy Spirit, then there can be no place for schemes of religious life or thought which allow for the ex opere operato efficacy of baptism."
Alexander and Thomas Campbell Retaught the 1500 year historical view of the importance of immersion in water.

Baptism Prophesied and Fulfilled All Old Testament events are prophetic types of some spiritual need in mankind. For instance, the "flood event" is repeated at the Red Sea, in the demise of Israel in Jeremiah 4 and in Christian Baptism. None of these events see people saved before they obey God's command upon which their faith rests.
