Charles Dailey Instrumental Music in Worship

See David Young Minister North Boulevard Church of Christ in Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Consistent with the hostile attack from about 1890 to the present, David Young blasphemes the Holy Spirit OF Christ who defined a Church of Christ (the Rock) and in the Prophets radically condemning musical machines as having the power of sorcery or soothsaying (Miriam and the Levites).

THIS PAPER WILL HELP YOU FLEE BABYLON whose Mother of Harlots (Revelation 17) uses "lusted after fruits" (Same as in Isaiah 8) as self-speakers, singers, instrument players and ALL religious craftsmen who were called PARASITES.

The Levites in 2 Chronicles 29 is the defining pattern to say that God commanded the use of instrumental music in worship. I have tried to peal out the story of the Levites beginning by being cursed by Jadob.  Because of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai the Levites volunteered to slaughter 3,000 of the offenders. When the kingdom began the Levites STOOD GUARD as commanded by Moses and they would kill any civillian who came near any of the animal sacrifices.

If God commanded the Levites to make music it was for the worship of the starry host: being imposed in a church near you.

This is a fatal failure to read the Old Testament by  all sectors of the Restoration Movement.

The Disciples/Christian Church first proposed that 'psallo' MEANS to make music with an instrument when it never means more than pluck with your fingers and NEVER with a plectrum.  In fact, if you used this folly and make melody with anything but a fingered string you VIOLATE their direct command and are a divisive sinner. old reviewA
  1. They also claimed that God COMMANDED instrumental music in worship in the Old Telstament. Now, they say that if you do NOT then you are disobedien.
  2. There is no evidence that God commanded any kind of "musical" device at any time or place even when He abandoned them to worship the starry host because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai which was a terminal sin.
  3. If God did not command musical instruments then The Holy Spirit of Christ in Jeremiah 23 says that you blaspheme the Holy Spirit.
There are many instances where the fall into the use of instruments told God to stop speaking to them. This is a sin without redemption.

No one can read the Old Testament without understand that David radically changed the roles of the Levites from servants into linen-wearing musicians: God did not do that.  Christ in Ezekiel insists that David's demoting the Zadok priesthood was when the Levites Went Astray.

See How David was chosen to carry out the captivity and death sentence imposed at Mount Sinai and began when the elders fired God and demanded a "senior pastor" to let them worship like the nations.

See Christ defining Blasphemy of The Holy Spirit
The Instruments commanded by David for the Levites were authorized only in or around Jerusalem and behind the closed gates of the city.  "Music" derived from mystery was used to "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter: they clearly served only the priests during sacrifices.

The Holy Spirit of Christ in Isaiah and other places proves that God DID NOT command any of it.

> David Faust at FHU Number One. David uses the standard fare for the NACC bent on sowing discord under the ploy of UNITING something which never existes.  When churches of Christ denies that it was part of the Disciples, the Christian church was still a decade in the future before secting out of the Disciples.  David repeats the common proof text while ignoring the story line.  The first article will deal with the fact that God PROMISED David a Tabernacle but Solomon built Him a House but God does not live in houses.  The loud music when the Tabernacle fell and the Ark was put away caused God's glory to be manifested: this meant HANDS OFF, you will never ever come into the reach of my Word and my Grace under the Mercy Seat. Of course those sowing discord have God engaging in a virtual orgy.

> Number Two deals with the regular use The songs of Accent and of Psalm 87 as prophecy that God prophesied instruments in the church. This is supposedly validated by Hebrews 12.  Fact is, the going in processional hymns points to Isaiah 30 where God promises that all of those nations seduced from His Word by wind, string and percussion instruments will be driven into Topheth as a type of Hell to the beat of these same instruments.

A SCRIPTURAL ANALYSIS OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Charles Dailey: Even in Jesus' time the instruments were common.

Common in Paganism but NO mention in the New Testament except Jesus CASTING OUT the musical minstrels like dung and marking the MEN of that age as CHILDREN (deviants) who PIPED trying to force others to SING or lament and DANCE.  The Scribes and Pharisees were called HYPOCRITES. Christ in Ezekiel 33 marked Speakers, singers and Instrument players. The Dionysus worship as the Abomination of Desolation used music while initiating men into the Gay Brotherhood which was sodomy. Christ had explained this perverted worship in Isaiah 3.

Charles Dailey: One of the outstanding authorities on life in the New Testament times is the man who converted from Judaism at twenty-one and became a priest in the church of England, Alfred Edersheim, PhD. He wrote The Temple, Its Ministry and Its Services. He described the Temple of Herod with these words:

The music of the Temple owed its origin to David, who was not only a poet and a music composer, but who also invented musical, instruments especially the ten string Nevel or lute. From the Book of Chronicles we know how fully this part of the service was cultivated, although the statement of Josephus, that Solomon had provided forty thousand harps and lutes, and two hundred thousand silver trumpets, is evidently a gross exaggeration. The Rabbis enumerate thirty-six different instruments, of which only fifteen are mentioned in the Bible, and of these five in the Pentateuch. (Page 78)

God abandoned the Israelites to worship the starry host because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. When the elders "fired" Him and demanded a "senior pastor" God turned them loose: He gave them kings in His anger to lead them into captivity and death.

Not even Jesus could enter into any of the "holy" places.  Most of those instruments came from Egypt along with the performers: the Levites had been active in priestly functions in Egypt.  When the temple was destroyed by God's permissive will we know of no Levites or harps which survived.

These supplied King Solomon's Music Grove. The valley was Topheth named after the tambourine. It became a symbol of HELL where the king of Babylon along with his HARPS and HARPISTS would burn and rot on a bed of MAGGOTS.

Nevel: 5035. Nebel, neh΄-bel; or nebel, nay΄-bel; from 5034; a skin-bag for liquids (from collapsing when empty); hence, a vase (as similar in shape when full); also a lyre (as having a body of like form):—bottle, pitcher, psaltery, vessel, viol.

5034. nabel, naw-bale΄; a primitive root; to wilt; generally, to fall away, fail, faint; figuratively, to be foolish or (morally) wicked; causatively, to despise, disgrace:—disgrace, dishounour, lightly esteem, fade (away, -ing), fall (down, -ling, off), do foolishly, come to nought, x surely, make vile, wither.

5038. nbelah, neb-ay-law΄; from 5034; a flabby thing, i.e. a carcase or carrion (human or bestial, often collectively); figuratively, an idol:--(dead) body, (dead) carcase, dead of itself, which died, (beast) that (which) dieth of itself.

No one ever made music INSIDE of any holy place: they were outside in the court where the animals were slaughtered and burned: NO temple was a house of worship but an imagined HOUSE FOR THE GODS as David proposed.

You can read Edersheim here and not get fooled by Charles. This was a civil-state ritual and the common people did not attend. There were representatives from the tribes but NOT the congregation.

Properly speaking, the real service of praise in the Temple was only with the voice.
This is often laid down as a principle by the Rabbis.

What instrumental music there was, served only to accompany and sustain the song.
Accordingly,
none other than Levites might act as choristers, while other distinguished Israelites were allowed to take part in the instrumental music.

Even so, no one played instruments INSIDE of the Holy Places but in the court.

As usual, we just don't quote fully! The evidence is that the harps came from Egypt along with idolatrous wives. If we look to the LAW to understand Paul's prohibiting outspoken and NON-SEDENTARY women we can look to Miriam and these women who utterly corrupted Israel.

THAT GIVES AID AND COMFORT TO THE MUSICAL MOCKING OF THE SACRIFICIAL MUSIANS.

Click to see Adam Clark and other notes on Amos:

As the trumpets were to be blown by the priests only, the sons of Aaron,

there were only two, because there were only two such persons to use them at this time, Eleazar and Ithamar. In the time of Joshua there were seven trumpets used by the priests, but these were made, according to our text, of rams' horns, Josh. vi. 4.In the time of Solomon, when the priests had greatly increased, there were 120 priests sounding with trumpets, 2 Chron. v. 12.

Solomon's wives brought ten thousand harps from Egypt."

The trumpets or shofars or ram's horns were all tuned to a single note by the priests. Notching or drilling holes (polluting them) set the tone and no one could alter them. At the dedication of the temple 120 horns blew a continuous blast in unison: this was NOT music. Again, we need to warn about people using APOSTASY as the approved example for sowing discord.

"not before David's time do professional musicians appear in the Bible. From where did they come? Considering the apparent connection of professional musicians with the institution of Monarcy, we must bear in mind that in the neighboring countries, Egypt and Assyria, the professional musician was an old and familiar figure. It seems that the midrash alludes to an ancient tradition when it relates that King Solomon's Egyptian wife, daughter of the Pharaoh, carried in her dowry a thousand foreign instruments. Yet an instrument is of no use without a musician able to play it.

Hence, we may assume that the systematic import and subsequent training of professional musicians took place in the era of David and Solomon." (Int Dict of the Bible, Music, p. 457).

"The trained musicians which eventually appear around the time of David and Solomon mark a distinctive change in the history of Jewish music. Before this time much of the music was made by women." (Zondervan Pict., Music p. 313).

All ancient priesthoods were plagued with effeminacy or worse and therefore the women's instruments are taken into the service of their "gods."

Ezekiel marks the time when the "Levites went astray" to the time that David demoted Zadok by leaving  him at the site of the original Tabernacle.

1 Chron 25:1 MOREOVER David and the Commanders of the Army separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:

First, you might read First Samuel Eight.  When Israel's elders "fired" God He warned them that the kings would steal all of their lands and people to serve the king and all of his Civil warriors.  Nehemiah by the Spirit of Christ confirmed that the kings and priests had stolen their property and put them into slavery because of their own sin. This was to carry out the captivity and death sentence imposed because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Why not since Stephen and everyone state that God turned them over to worship the starry host at Mount Sinai: therefore, the king, kingdom, temple, animal sacrifices and the music known as "exorcism" was imposed as a curse and is not a PATTERNISM for Christian worship.

The name of psaltery entered Christian literature in the 3rd century B.C. translation of the Old Testament called the Septuagint where, in the Psalms, nebel was translated psalterion. Thus, Nebuchadnezzar's idolatrous ensemble included the Aramic psantria. Notice, also, that the book of Psalms has also become known as the Psalter (or psalterium), from the hymns sung with this harp."

Edersheim did not believe that the music owed its origin to God who commanded David. Another writer notes that:

"When Solomon became king he sat about making a name for himself. Henceforth the watchword was 'Solomon in all his glory' while the covenant of brothers was displaced by the corvιe, the enslavement of brothers. What a marvelous prospect appeared for Israel in the Davidic empire! But Solomon's kingdom marked the beginning of the end of what was left of the tribal union; it paved the way for ruin. Perhaps the way of empire was not for Israel, the people of God." (Myers, Invitation to The Old Testament, p. 86).

That is the meaning of a restored priesthood and "Levitical Musicians" denouncing the LAITY as less than competent.

Yes, but before he later said he before said:

The flute (or reed pipe) was played in the Temple on twelve special festivities. *

* The flute was used in Alexandria to accompany the hymns at the love feasts of the early Christians, up to the year 190, when Clement of Alexandria introduced the harp in its place.

These were: the day of killing the first, and that of killing the second Passover, the first day of unleavened bread, Pentecost, and the eight days of the Feast of Tabernacles.

In the synagogues out of Jerusalem the Shophar alone was blown at the New Year, and on fast-days only trumpets. Click Here for more on Edersheim

Later, Edersheim says,

Quite in accordance with the social character of these feasts, the flute was also used by the festive pilgrim bands on their journey to Jerusalem, to accompany the "Psalms of Degrees," or rather of "Ascent," sung on such occasions.

It was also customary to play it at marriage feasts and at funerals for according to Rabbinical law every Jew was bound to provide at least two flutes and one mourning woman at the funeral of his wife. In the Temple, not less than two nor more than twelve flutes were allowed, and the melody was on such occasions to close with a note of one flute alone. (Page 80)

But Jesus cast them out LIKE DUNG.

You will note that the the following word can be translated to take your inheritance (prune your vines), play the flute, pollute or prostitute:

Chalal (h2490) khaw-lal'; a prim. root [comp. 2470]; prop. to bore, i. e. (by impl.) to wound, to dissolve; fig. to profane (a person, place or thing), to break (one's word), to begin (as if by an "opening wedge"); denom. (from 2485) to play (the flute): - begin (* men began), defile, * break, defile, * eat (as common things), * first, * gather the grape thereof, * take inheritance, pipe, player on instruments, pollute, (cast as) profane (self), prostitute, slay (slain), sorrow, stain, wound.

The PRAISE word is most often used of "making self vile" as in the case of David:

Halal (h1984) haw-lal'; a prim. root; to be clear (orig. of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; causat. to celebrate; also to stultify: - (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool (- ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self) mad (against), give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned, shine.

The musical words are the source of LUCIFER the "singing and harp-playing prostitute":

Heylel (h1966) hay-lale'; from 1984 (in the sense of brightness); the morning-star: - lucifer.

LET ME SAY AGAIN: BECAUSE OF MUSICAL IDOLATRY GOD TURNED ISRAEL OVER TO WORSHIP THE STARRY HOST WHICH INCLUDED THE SUN AND MOON.  While the Levites were out of the tribe of Levi, the term LEVITES is derived from the servants of Dionysus. Notes from King Solomon's Temple not in God's original plan

Jacob says I have waited for thy salvation, O Lord!" Of Simeon and Levi the patriarch remarks that they
Gen. 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments [Sword or Musical]
of cruelty are in their habitations.
Gen. 49:6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret;
unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united:
for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.

Habitations means "stabbing" from "a cooking range" or boiler, a pot or furnace. God knew that they had a lust for blood and flesh and that was the only rationale for the national or pagan sacrificial systems.

Under "Star Worship" the Jewish Encyclopedia states:

"Star Worship" is perhaps the oldest form of idolatry practiced by the ancients. The observation of the stars in the East very early led the people to regard the planets and the fixed stars as gods. The religion of the ancient Egyptians is known to have consisted preeminently of Sun-worship. Moses sternly warned the Israelites against worshipping the Sun, Moon, stars, and all the hosts of heaven (Deuteronomy 4:19; 17:3). The Israelites fell into this kind of idolatry and as early as the time of Amos they had the images of Siccuth and Chium, 'the stars of their god' (Amos 5:26); the latter name is generally supposed to denote the planet Saturn. That the Kingdom of Israel fell earlier than that of Judah is stated (II Kings 17:16) to have been due, among other causes, to its worshipping the host of heaven.

But the Kingdom of Judah in its later period seems to have outdone the Northern Kingdom [Israel] in star-worship." Of Manasseh it is related that he built altars to all the hosts of heaven in the two courts of the house of YHWY, and it seems it was the practice of even Kings before him to appoint priests who offered sacrifices to the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and all the hosts of heaven. Altars for star-worship were built on the roofs of the houses, and horses and chariots were dedicated to the worship of the Sun. (II Kings 21:5; 23:4-5, 11-12) Star-worship continued in Judah until the 18th year of Josiah's reign (621 B.C.) when the King took measures to abolish all kinds of idolatry. But although star-worship was then abolished as a public cult, it was practiced privately by individuals who worshipped the heavenly bodies, and poured out libations to them on the roofs of their houses (Zephaniah 1:5; Jeremiah 8:2; 19:13)  Jeremiah, who prophesied in the sixth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin (591 B.C.) describes the worship of the Sun as practiced in the court of the Temple (Ezekiel 8:16) and that even after the destruction of the Temple the women insisted on continuing to worship the Queen of Heaven.

"The ancient Hebrews, being nomads like the Arabs, favored the Moon, while the Babylonians, who were an agricultural nation, preferred the Sun. But, as appears from Ezekiel 20:7-8 the Moon-worship of the Israelites, even while they were still in Egypt was combined with Sun-worship."

(Page 80)

I have pointed out that one of the POPULAR processionals was going up to Jerusalem to the sound of music. Their purpose included burning infants in the red hoot arms of Molech to whom God had abandoned them because of the TRANSGRESSION of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. God lumps all of the nations together to PROVE that they, too, would be destroyed by God to the BEAT of instrumental music. See Isaiah 30.

And his breath [SPIRIT], as rushing water in a valley, reach reach as far as the neck, and be divided, to confound the nations for their vain error; error also shall pursue them and overtake them. Isaiah 30:28 LXX

Must ye always rejoice, and go into my holy places continually, as they that keep a feast? and must ye go with a pipe, as those that rejoice into the mountain of the Lord, to the God of Israel Isaiah 30:29 LXX

and the Lord shall make his glorious voice to be heard and the wrath of his arm, to make a display with wrath and anger and devouring flame: he shall lighten terribly, and his wrath shall be as water and violent hail. Isaiah 30:30 LXX

For by the voice of the Lord the Assyrians shall be overcome, even by the stroke where with he shall smite them. Isaiah 30:31 LXX

And it shall happen to him from every side, that they from whom their hope of assistance was, in which he trusted, themselves shall war against him in turn with drums and with harp. Isaiah 30:32 LXX

For thou shalt be required before thy time: has it been prepared for thee also to reign? nay, God has prepared for thee a deep trench, wood piled fire and much wood: the wrath of the Lord shall be as a trench kindled with sulphur. Isaiah 30:33 LXX

"This valley was early selected as the seat of the worship of Moloch, where his rites were celebrated by erecting a huge brazen image with a hollow trunk and arms, which was heated, and within which, or on the arms of which, children were placed as a sacrifice to the horrid idol. To drown their cries, drums were beaten, which were called Tophim." (Barnes, Isaiah 33, p. 463).

"We may understand a thing as spoken generally, even when it requires a certain special interpretation to be given to it. For some things spoken with a special reference contain in them general truth.

When God admonishes the Isrealites of their duty, or sharply reproves them,
He has surely a reference
to all men;

when He threatens destruction to Egypt and Ethiopia,
He surely pre-condemns every sinning nation, whatever.

If, reasoning from species to genus, every nation that sins against them is an Egypt and Ethiopia; so also, reasoning from genus to species, with reference to the origin of shows, every show is an assembly of the wicked.

Secondly, when Jesus was to heal the young girl He CAST OUT the musical minstrels (singers, flute players) more or less violently as one CASTS OUT DUNG. This is because the flute-girls were usually prostitutes under the same city official who regulated cemetaries, prostitutes and dung heaps. The second MARK is that the sacrificial "musicians" served in the midst of the cry of innocent animals, blood, burning flesh and DUNG.

Thirdly, when He returns most will be involved in MARRYING AND GIVING IN MARRIAGE.

Halal (h194) haw-lal'; a prim. root; to be clear (orig. of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; causat. to celebrate; also to stultify: - (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool (- ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self) mad (against), give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned, shine.

Charles Dailey: Now I have read that passage to underscore the fact that instruments of music were used in Herod's Temple and were part of Jewish national life. Each and every Jew connected instrumental accompaniment with his singing to God and about God. Their Scriptures taught them that singing was often accompanied.

Any singer or instrument player who came NEAR or INSIDE of any holy place was to be executed: they were ordained to carry the burden of God's Tabernacle and to bear the burden of their own Sin.

The Jews do not recognize this as the third temple but HEROD'S TEMPLE: it was manned mostly by hirelings who bought their offices as high bidders. They were probably Edomites and therefore the generation of vipers John promised a baptism of fire and wind to burn them up.

No Levite, used as Warrior Noise makers and later under the king and commanders of the army--could come near the holy places of the sanctury or they would be executed. The patternism is that if a musician enters into the body of Christ as fulfilment of the Holy Place he / she / it is worthy of death.

Num 18:2 And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister BEFORE the tabernacle of witness. [never IN]

H8334 sharath shaw-rath' A primitive root; to attend as a menial or worshipper; figuratively to contribute to:--minister (unto), (do) serve (-ant, -ice, -itor), wait on.

Nadab and Abihu violates several commandments.

All of the non-Levites were called STRANGERS: therefore, if you were not of the tribe of Levi with the assignment to serve you could not even minister to the priests outside of the Temple-proper.  Therefore, no member of the "church" could come near the Tabernacle and none of the "ministers" could ENTER it.

"A stranger," that is, one, neither a priest nor a Levite, who should intrude into any departments of the sacred office, should incur the penalty of death. ROBERT JAMIESON

Num 18:4 And they shall be joined unto thee,
and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation,
        for all the servic
e [hard, legalistic bondage] of the tabernacle:
and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you.

The sacrificial system was NEVER the spiritual worship but part of the WRATH DISPELLING curse imposed because of Musical idolatry.

Num 18:5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar:
that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.

Contrary to being a spiritual worship service, the sacrificial system had been imposed and if it were not performed it would bring down God's wrath as punishment due for NOT performing what they had been abandoned to.

Num 18:6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel:
to you they are given as a gift for the LORD,
to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Num 18:7 Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the altar,
and within the veil; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift:

and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

THAT MEANS THAT THE NACC IS ACTIVELY TEMPTING PEOPLE TO USE THE "PATTERNISM" OF THE TEMPLE WHERE NO SPEAKER, SINGER OR INSTRUMENT PLAYER COULD GO WITHOUT GETTING KILLED. THE SPIRITUAL THREAD WAS QUARANTINED TO THE SYNAGOGUE WHERE VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL REJOICING WAS OUTLAWED (NUM 10)

The Holy Place was a carnal type of the body or Church of Christ: no singer or player could enter on the penalty of death even to clean out the garbage when Hezekiah cleansed the temple. See the facts about Amos to see that the singers or musicians could NEVER enter into the Holy Place as a carnal type of the body of Christ or into the Most Holy place EVEN TO CLEAN OUT GARBAGE.

All of the Old Testament passages on instrumental music have to do with women, camp followers, dedicatory or purification ceremonies in connection with animal sacrifices or purely festive occasions. Without Jerusalem and the Temple and animal sacrifices, instrumental music lost its reason for existance and ceased.

AFTER these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. Jn 7:1

Now the Jews feast of tabernacles was at hand. Jn 7:2

His brethren (brothers) therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. Jn 7:3

For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew (seek publicity, shine) thyself to the world. Jn 7:4

For neither did his brethren believe in him. Jn 7:5

The Jew's Feast of Tabernacles had degenerated into a giant, Jubilee-like festival where clergy and laiety alike declared their victory over God. There were musical contests, dancing contests, drinking, and even the elders got into the act. Those who won the contest would, in a modern sense, get on the lecture circuit as men of note. Then as now, those who knew the least but said it best were the highest paid men in the Roman empire. Click Here for some details.

"Today, this music and dance festival is understood as the

one remnant of the old Canaanite fertility rituals, which, in the monotheistic pseudomorphosis of the temple ceremonies, was to ensure an abundant crop of plants, animals, and even human beings." ... "

This was perhaps the only occasion where popular music-making was allowed to mix with the otherwise sternly guarded

prerogative of Levitical music. Consequently, secular, superstitious, even popular licentious elements were here introduced in the performance of the temple's liturgical music." (International Dictionary of the Bible, p. 463, Abingdon).

Did you notice that Lord Jesus Christ did no choose a single "man of the cloth" from the Temple clergy? Not one man from the "Rabinnic School of Popular Preaching." Note one official Levite. Was this a deliberate repudiation of the degenerated Jewish worship? We think so:

"Neither the gospels nor the epistolary literature display
any particular interest in the
ritual and the liturgy of the temple.
It might even be said that the apostles considered the institution of the temple
........... as a panel for religious disputation at best,
........... as a seat of corruption at worst.

They all came from the synagogue and were at home there.

They had no use for hierarchial traditions and were, in this respect at least, in accord with the Pharisees, opposed to the ruling class of the Sadducees, who dominated the temple.

Indeed, all evidence points to the chant and music of the primitive church as practically identical with the customs and traditions of the synagogue." (International Dictionary of the Bible, p. 466).

"The tabulation of musical passages "contains a rather disproportionate number of metaphorical sentences,
........... where music or its instruments
........... are not to be understood literally but are used as similies or rhetorical figures.

The most celebrated of these poetical passages is Paul's glorification of love in I Cor. 13." (Interpreter's Dict of the Bible, Music, p. 466).

Is this what Paul meant when he placed both the SINGING and MELODY in the heart or mind? Philo speaks about spiritual singing and declares that YOU cannot praise God with YOUR words.

Charles Dailey: They read such statements as 1 Chronicles 23:5:

Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose." (1 Chronicles 23:5 NIV)

What would make a man who was living at Capernaum in 30 A.D. anti-instrumental or even non-instrumental. Who or what would give him that impression?

One might remember that God permitted the star worship temple to be destroyed.  When a pitiful structure was rebuilt Nehemiah had to pull some hair to force the singers back to "live on a daily dole of bread."  Within a hundred years the temple had dissappeared from history except for one PURIFICATION ceremony. The synagogue or church in the wilderness was the "church" the spiritual people attended to REST, read and discuss the Word: that is exactly what Jesus exampled and Paul commanded and the people practiced before SINGING was added to split the church in 373.

Why, Charles go to it if you want to rebuild the TEMPLE which was "like the nations" and built by Hiram the architect of Tyre whose king was a type of LUCIFER called the 'singing and harp-playing prostitute." The Levitical "musicians" were warriors. They performed during civil-religious rituals such as dedication and purification of temples and people always accompanied by animal sacrifices.

David [king], together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service: 1Chr.25:1

Charles Dailey: It would take a very specific authorization from the inspired leaders to stop using instruments for a first century Christian at Jerusalem to quit doing what he had always done and his fathers had done for centuries. It required just such a prohibition for Christians to stop their reliance on the feasts. There was no similar comment about the use of instruments.

Christ ordained the Church of Christ in the wilderness:
It was INCLUSIVE of Rest, Reading and Rehearsing the Word of God
It was EXCLUSIVE of "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" including any elevated form of speaking.
The synagogue always existed and it was -- as understood by the Campbells -- A School of Christ.

A. OPTION A vile pagan worship: The nation rejected God's rule and He abandoned them to kings after promising that the kings would enslave them. Their worship was of "the starry host" to which God abandoned them at Mount Sinai BECAUSE of musical idolatry.

B. OPTION B the "church": The Spirit of Christ ordained the Qahal, synagogue or church in the wilderness. It was INCLUSIVE of resting, reading and discussing the Word.  It was EXCLUSIVE of vocal and instrumental rejoicing because it was a school of the Bible--only. The Holy Convocation was always the FIRST and SEVENTH days of the festivals and on all REST days. The WORK outlawed "sending out ministers of God."

C. NEHEMIAH EXAMPLED THIS BY READING

D. All musical religion was known as pagan and perverted: in the Temple during the Abomination of Desolation.

E. Therefore there is NO AUTHORITY for instruments for the spiritual people in the whole Bible and no exception to the pagan-perverted paganism.

F. Wouldn't Jesus have had to COMMANDED the church to began what as the Spirit of Christ He had OUTLAWED for the church in the wilderness.

G. Furthermore, He cast out the musical minstrels LIKE DUNG and consigned the pipers, singers and dancers to the marketplace where many polluted, perverted temples existed.

Well, any school kid would grasp that the instruments had validity ONLY to serve the priests where SERVE means "hard bondage" with a word much like ABADDON. They understood that this was ONLY in Canaan, only in Jerusalem and only in connection with animal sacrifices at the temple. They were so convinced that they dared not add instruments until about the year 1815 and even then hired a Gentil organist because playing on the SABBATH was not lawful.

We just told you that Edersheim and the inspired Bible tells you that if you are NOT of the tribe of Levi and OF certain families and you tried to lead the common, non-clergy people into Discipleship then you would have been executed. I suspect that with DNA it might be possible to track down some Levites these days.

The best records fail to show any musical instruments in the temple of Herod although they were played in and around the courts and on the steps. Steps, by the way were forbidden to the priests whose nakedness might be exposed. No carved anything was the law. Josephus warns that the Levite singers "wearing linen garments" in the PRIESTLY sense rather than "hard bondage service" HAD destroyed the nation once (Ezekiel 40f) and were trying to do it again for their own glory.

Charles Dailey: Now you came to Pentecost in AD 30 and heard the apostles proclaim Jesus as the Messiah. You said, "That's right, he is the Messiah. We saw him perform miracles. We saw him heal the sick." He is the Christ and so you accepted Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah, the One that the whole nation had been looking for.

You were happy about this and you sang with the brethren. How did you sing? Did you sing vocal only?

Or, did you sing as the brethren had been singing, as the Jews had been singing -- for centuries?
Did you sing accompanied with mechanical instrument?

Duh? Can't find that in Scripture! Jesus and the Apostles "hymned a hymn" after the "feast of unleavened bread" where the Lord's Supper was instituted.  Neither Jesus nor the apostles could get CLOSE to the slaughter pit. Edersheim proves that "there was no praise service in the synagoge." The knew that it had been OUTLAWED for any assembly of the common people.

Matthew 26.30 When they had 'hymned" they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Charles Dailey: The letter of James was probably the first canonical New Testament book written. I date it at AD 47 or 17 years after Pentecost. How would the Jewish brethren have understood James 5:13?

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. (James 5:13 NIV)

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: Ja 5:14

How about this one? Is this a legalistic act of worship or Ceremonial Legalism?

GO to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Jas 5:1

It is elementary that this was NOT IN THE ASSEMBLY or the sick person would not have called for the elders!  The word SING or ode is defined as in Psalmos or a "Hebrew Cantillation." Melody as tunefulness did not exist until the 19 century and NONE of the Bible is metrical in a tuneful sense.  When Calvin restored congregational "singing" it was not possible without REWRITING them so they could be set to meter.

I don't think James is defining church. Paul speaks of the gathering or assembly and uses a form of the word Synagogue.

Charles Dailey: For his word praise, James selected the same Greek word psallo that the translators of the Greek Old Testament selected to translate zamar, the profoundly instrumental word for singing in the Old Testament. It appears 36 times. How would the Jewish readers of James purge the word of its inherent instrumentation?

The word NEVER meant to make music: it simply means to PULL with the fingers and NOT WITH THE PLECTRUM. You would have a direct command which outlawed a piano, organ, guitar with a pick or trumpet because it cannot be PLUCKED. Apollo or Abaddon who is Apollyon is often pictured PLUCKING both the lyre and his bow. His bow sent out literal or love arrows. In the same way the literature speaks of SHOOTING OUT HYMNS. This is the ONLY connection.

There is not a solitary instance in the history of literature which makes PSALLO mean to play an instrument. You need three things: 1) sing, 2) PLUCK and 3) you ALWAYS have to define what is plucked.

In the word used in Ephesians Paul does not use the personal traumas identified by James. Don't get DRUNK is the Greek "methuo" which I have found often as meaning 'don't get FLUTED or don't get PIPED down with wine.' The pagan "worship" where women led usually as the "prophesiers" of 1 Cor. 11:5 were the FLUTE-GIRLS which was a synomyn for prostitute. They were like bar girls and you know that you cannot peddle wine without music.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Eph 5:18 (This is the Word of Christ in Col 3:16 and in John 6:63)

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Eph 5:19

The word methuo or drunk very often speaks of "getting FLUTED down or PIPED down with wine." Then as now you don't get drunk in the homosexual gatherings without the flute girls who were prostitutes and the male harpists or PLUCKERS of strings who were Sodomites.

Look at this in two steps.

First part is EXTERNAL.

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

Laleo (g2980) lal-eh'-o; a prol. form of an otherwise obsol. verb; to talk, i.e. utter words: - preach, say, speak (after), talk, tell, utter. Comp. 3004.

Lego (g3004) leg'-o; a prim. verb; prop. to "lay" forth, i.e. (fig.) relate in words usually of systematic or set discourse

In Ephesians chapter four and five Paul uses numerous parallel statements none of which have to do with ceremonial legalism. For instance:

Wherefore putting away lying,
........... speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Ep.4:25

This may have always have to do with corporate worship which in Corinth "did more harm than good." It was possible to "speak" to one another outside the collective assembly and have the heart strings plucked as you "sing" internally to God. As a way for people with diverse opinions to SPEAK THE SAME THINGS, Paul defined the ekklesia or synagogue which was a school of the Bible;

For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. Rom 15:3

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom 15: 4

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: Rom 15: 5

That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rom 15: 6

In an almost identical statement the Psalmist says (without any musical notation added):

O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name:
make known his deeds among the people. Psa 105:1

Sing (just sing) unto him, sing psalms unto him:
        talk
ye of all his wondrous works. Psa 105:2 (they did not psalm but they sang psalms)

THE WORD SPEAK OUTLAWS MUSIC

Greek: loquor , I. inf. loquier, to talk, whisper;  to speak, talk, say (in the lang. of common life, in the tone of conversation;
B. Act.
    1. To speak out, to say, tell, talk about, mention, utter, name
    A. To speak, declare, show, indicate or express clearly

logik-os ( [logos]  A. of or for speaking or speech, merκ l. the organs of speech, speech, opposite to mousikκ,

Mousikos II. of persons, skilled in music, musical, III. of things, elegant, delicate, professional musicians,  mousikos kai melτn poκtκs, hκdion ouden,  harmonious [in tune], fitting, trophκ

Now, look at the second part of the verse:

singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Eph 5:19

Ado (g103) ad'-o; a prim. verb; to sing: - sing.

Paul probably would not combine external preaching and external singing being done at the same time.

External Melody always had an ugly association with prostitution and the panic of warfare. Therefore, many scholars say that by this time the word was used figuratively of the "abrading" or "heart breaking" which takes place when we speak God's words.

Psallo (g5567) psal'-lo; (to rub or touch the surface; comp. 5597); to twitch or twang, i.e. to play on a stringed instrument (celebrate the divine worship with music and accompanying odes): - make melody, sing (psalms)

Psocho (g5597) pso'-kho; prol. from the same base as 5567; to triturate (grind to powder), i.e. (by anal.) to rub out (kernels from husks with the fingers or hand): - rub.

Psomion (g5596) pso-mee'-on; dim. from a der. of the base of 5597; a crumb or morsel (as if rubbed off), i.e. a mouthful: - sop.

This is the sop Jesus fed Judas who would not triumph over Him with music and rejoicing which would happen if Judas had won. The Judas Bag was

Glossokomon (g1101) gloce-sok'-om-on; from 1100 and the base of 2889; prop. a case (to keep mouthpieces of wind-instruments in), i.e. (by extens.) a casket or (spec.) purse: - bag. This word is made up of:

Speaking in tongues and

Of the world which belongs to Satan who filled Judas when Jesus fed him the PSOMION.

Remember the connection Paul made between instrumental music and speaking in tongues?

Charles Dailey: There is not one word that the apostles or prophets ever spoke against instrumental music. Rather, we find the church met in the Temple where the instruments were used in profusion.

If you read 2 Maccabees you will understand that the godly Jews had mostly fled Jerusalem rather than being emasculated and turned into musical prostitutes in the holy places.  The Jewish clergy was so vile that Jesus spoke to the masses in parables to PREVENT them from hearing the Word.

Paul ALWAYS silences anything that does not edify or educate in his commands. The gifted men were to SILENCE all of the cunning crafty men to make the SPEAKING the Word of God possible.

Read Ephesians 4 and be certain that you translate the words else God HIDES Himself from the wise or Sophists: rhetoricians, singers, instrument players.

Read Ephesians 6.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

We do NOT wrestle against flesh and blood:

The sacrificial system had been added as a curse as Israel was led into captivity and death.  After 70 years they returned and built a small temple which was soon deserted. Furthermore, not even Jesus could enter into the Temple.

The Saducean priesthood during the first century were not of Aaron but consisted of four families: Boethus, Hanan, Kimchit, and Phiabi.  They intermarried with the Herodians, the Royal Rulers of the State of Israel, who were, themselves Edomites (Idumeans) from the Petra region (or Edom) and descendants of Esau (or Seir, which means "shaggy, he-goat, devil"), thus the "synagogue of Satan" leaders claimed to be Jews but were Edomites appointed by the Herodian rulers under Rome; Herod Antipas, for instance, and Pontius Pilate held the same governmental position for Rome, the reason for much rivalry between them); since Esau was "red and hairy" his nickname was Edom, and he lived in Seir where Ham's descendants settled.
The Feast of Tabernacles which Jesus attended late to avoid being taken captive was a giant fertility ritual.

Plutarch: When all the company requested and earnestly begged it of him; first of all (says he), the time and manner of the greatest and most holy solemnity of the Jews is exactly agreeable to the holy rites of Bacchus; for that which they call the Fast they celebrate in the midst of the vintage, furnishing their tables with all sorts of fruits while they sit under tabernacles made of vines and ivy; and the day which immediately goes before this they call the day of Tabernacles.

Within a few days after they celebrate another feast, not darkly but openly, dedicated to Bacchus, for they have a feast amongst them called Kradephoria, from carrying palm-trees, and Thyrsophoria, when they enter into the temple carrying thyrsi.

What they do within I know not; but it is very probable that they perform the rites of Bacchus. First they have little trumpets, such as the Grecians used to have at their Bacchanalia to call upon their gods withal.

Others go before them playing upon harps, which they call Levites, whether so named from Lusius or Evius,--either word agrees with Bacchus.

And I suppose that their Sabbaths have some relation to Bacchus; for even now many call the Bacchi by the name of Sabbi, and they make use of that word at the celebration of Bacchus's orgies.

And this may be discovered out of Demosthenes and Menander. Nor would it be out of place, were any one to say that the name Sabbath was given to this feast from the agitation and excitement which the priests of Bacchus display.

Because none of the believers were of the tribe of Levi none of them were allowed to be in the court when the Levitical Warrior musicians were serving the priests who were slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent lambs as their original and continuing repudiation of Jesus Christ as the Messiah.

The sounding brass in First Corinthians thirteen was a Greek military instrument or hollow vase. It is directly related to the Chaldean which is a synonymn for astrologer. It was used like the familiar spirit or "old wineskin" of the witch of Endor to call up a ghost from the subterranean world. By whispering and murmuring into the skin or hollow vase the client heard mysterous sounds which were interpreted as from the gods. At the same time, it was used as a musical instrument or weapon to try to panic the enmy with the noise.

Paul said, first test the inspired by person because if there is one such person he will acknowledge that I will reveal God's Word to you. Then, he said test it by having another inspired prophet confirm that your speaking in tongues or sounding brass is really from our God and not, as he said in 1Cor 14:1-9, out of their own spirit. This was not authority for these things but it was Paul's ironic way to show that Corinth had no such gifted people. He said that if there happened to be one such inspired person he would know that revelation came from the apostles and not those whom he identified as carnal.

Charles Dailey: We can find the Christians in and about the Temple in a number of Scriptures starting right in Acts 2 where the church originated. In Acts 5:20, we see again that the Christians were in the Temple. In fact, here the angel commands,

"Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the full message of this new life." (Acts 5:20 NIV)

Now, how are they going to preach to the milling masses in the temple courts while there is NO MUSIC but a loud crashing sound going on behind THICK walls. NO preacher would tolerate this: why would God incarnate? The word "temple" often designated the whole "circles of sanctity" spoke of by the Edersheim quote above.

Not even Jesus could get into the Holy Place as a type of his body or the church of Christ. When the "music" sounded not even Jesus could be in the court where the slaughtering with blood and dung was taking place.

If Jesus happened to be in an outer court or porch Edersheim informs us that he had better "be gone" or be on his fact.

When the "music" sounded the has better NOT be standing in the temple courts and preaching!

Charles Dailey: Remember, these courts resounded with the sounds of voices and instruments raised in the praise of God. They preached with a background of instrumental music.

Can't find that one! Bunk! Why would Jesus destroy the temple for the third time if the BACKGROUND music enhanced His sermons? T

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Luke 19:41

Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace but now they are hid from thine eyes. Luke 19:42

As prophesied, this whole event was to pass Judgment upon the Jews who knew the Word but refused to act upon it:

For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, Luke 19:43

And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Luke 19:44

When Jesus "cried out" it was just teaching:

And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Luke 19:45

Ekballo (g1544) ek-bal'-lo; from 1537 and 906; to eject (lit. or fig.): - bring forth, cast (forth, out), drive (out), expel, leave, pluck (pull, take, thrust) out, put forth (out), send away (forth, out).

Ballo (g906) bal'-lo; a prim. verb; to throw (in various applications, more or less violent or intense): - arise, cast (out), * dung, lay, lie, pour, put (up), send, strike, throw (down), thrust. Comp. 4496.

Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. Luke 19:46

Those who tithe or obey the LAW OF GIVING are BUYING that which Jesus died to give us for free. Jesus cast the out along with the blind.

Those who CHARGE or SELL their prophesying with or without music: Jesus cast the out into the dung heap.

The house was not the Holy Place or Most Holy Place but the court yards. Jesus could not enter the holy precincts.

And he taught daily in the temple, But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, Luke 19:47

The parable which Charles Dailey missed is that when people seek to TEACH the word, the Pharisees will seek to destroy you. The BACKGROUND MUSIC is a subconsious parable. Now, the background music was to SIGNAL people to be outside the gates and flat on their face. The chiefts were not RITUALIZING with music but rushing around trying to get at Jesus as God in their midst.

And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him. Luke 19:48

AND it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, Luke 20:1

Jesus preached DOCTRINE which is the very purpose for preaching the GOSPEL. Neither Jesus nor the people could enter into the temple. They would have been in the courts. They could not even be in the presence of the sacrificial "musicians" animal sacrivices.

The sounding of trumpets was not to accompany preaching (just try it) or singing. They were used as loud, noisey signals to tell everyone to fall on their face. Try holding your harp, your bowl of incense and sing while on your literal face. The "sounding" was on the steps leading from the court of women: you could be far away and still be in the courts.

Charles Dailey: Again in Acts 5:42,

Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ. (Acts 5:42 NIV)

In Acts 22:17, Paul describes a time of worship:

"When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance (Acts 22:17 NIV)

Then Charles Dailey should use a large body of musicians while someone is praying?

If there was any MUSIC playing that might account for Paul falling into a trance or ecstasy. However, here is another Dailey music parable missed: God didn't cause Paul to "worship" but:

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste [speed away], and

get thee quickly out of Jerusalem:
for
they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. Acts 22:18

But, Dailey: he was "where the instruments were clearly used."

And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: Acts 22:19

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. Acts 22:20

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. Acts 22:21

If only he had been a Stoneite! What a grand time to tell Paul to "take thou a musical worship team and a harp and flute-girls." Why old Paul had probably read him some Ezekiel or some Job or some Amos or some Isaiah or could SEE and HEAR:

For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. Ezek 33:28

Then shall they know that I am the Lord, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed. Ezek 33:29

See how the Abominable Branch was the "song with instruments opposed to Christ the True Branch. Then turn on some EYES and EARS:

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and

speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezek 33:30

And they come unto thee as the people cometh,

and they sit before thee as my people,
and they hear thy words,
........but they will not do them:

for with their mouth they shew much love,
........but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezek 33:31

And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song
........of one that hath a pleasant voice,
........and can play well on an instrument:
for they hear thy words,
........but they do them not. Ezek 33:32

And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. Ezek 33:33

Do we understand this: they never stopped teaching, proclaiming and playing musical instruments? Then what is the point? If MUSIC is so vital that people will deliberately SOW DISCORD and eject old grey hairs who cannot tolerate the ABRASIVE sounds out then surely we must find some hint that there was a murmuring of zithers or something in the background. The murmuring and storming on the zithers was when they MUSICALLY MOCKED Jesus as Levitical Warrior musicians.

Charles Dailey: So we find that early Christians, including inspired leaders, were in the Temple where the instruments were clearly used.

Daily has NO evidence of that: when they went into the OUTER COURTS they held "synagogue" by teaching the Word--only. When animal sacrifices were in full swing the LOUD NOISE was a signal that non-clergy Jews including off-duty priests and Levites had better be OUTSIDE THE GATES and on their face

The temple grounds, like a tower of Babel, had circles of sanctity and not even Jesus got into the Holy Place or Most Holy place. They met and taught in the courts and porches BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE THE PEOPLE WERE. However, they were not making instrumental music. How could they TEACH when instruments were making noixe?

We have clearly shown above that the Jews didn't play real music but made a great crashing sound to signal the beginning and ending of the sacrifice. Later additions were identified as "children in the marketplace (temple) playing instrumental music to seduce even John and Jesus." They did not succeed. We showed that Jesus went up to the temple to condemn what the Jews were doing at The Feast of Tabernacles. History shows that this was "show and tell time" for the childish, fertility priestly class. We find no Christian singing with the temple "Musical Worship Team" nor borrowing their mind control methods. Nothing.

Charles Dailey: Now if we make the claim that the New Testament is silent about the instrument, then we are saying that it was approved by the apostles, because they did not warn against this common, everyday Jewish practice of worship.

No Disciple of Christ commandled to teach what HE COMMANDED TO BE TAUGHT would claim that the New Testament was silent: Paul warns about STRONG DELUSION where you can no longer READ or HEAR the Word of Christ: the MARK of lying wonders is specificially religious ceremonies claiming to be from God but consumed with theatrical performance.

They did not have to because they had heard the Word PREACHED by being READ in the Synagogue each Sabbath (Rest) Day. You see, they were NOT around the Temple Courts along with the jesters, money changers and prostitutes. They were IN CHURCH. Jesus met with the believers on two First Days of the Week not close to the temple.

They understood that even the EXAMPLE of Jesus was to attend Synagogue and READ the prescribed section of the Word.

The Temple was HEROD'S Temple and Jesus' PATTERN was that it was valid only for PRAYER.  Josephus agrees with Ezekiel that the Levites had helped destroy the nation once and wanted to BECOME singers again by becoming clergy-singers when David demoted Zadok.

See Josephus to prove that there were no clergy singer: Only, as prophesied in Psalm 41 when they musical mocked Jesus to the cross.

No, no literate Bible student would ever say that the New Testament is silent about instruments. Here may be the problem:

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city
        them that preach him,
being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

The example of Jesus was to stand up to read the Word and then decently sit down.

But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 2 Cor 3:15
Nevertheless, when it
shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 2 Cor 3:16

Now the Lord is that Spirit:
........ and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor 3:17

But we all, with open face
........ beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
........ are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
........ even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor 3:18

Now, just look above, when Paul was praying OUTSIDE of the music area but the Levites may have, according to Josephus, been making illegal "music" on the steps leading from the Court of Women. Maybe they were trying to HEAR what Paul could hear and the MUSIC at the same time

Dailey: then we are saying that it was approved by the apostles,

No, that is a lie: Jesus repudiated the minstrels and pipers, exampled the synagogue, outlawed the laded burdens (songs), Paul outlawed SELF pleasure which points to all of the theatrical and musical rituals so that the synagogue (Rom 15) could take place, Peter warned about the SPORTING, Jude wrote a parallel to The Book of Enoch which gives SATAN credit for teaching the people how to IGNORE the Word by choirs and instruments.

But, Paul was IN THE SPIRIT and could hear Christ tell him: run from this pagan "Worship Center" because they are MARKED:

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste [speed away], and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. Acts 22:18

And he [Christ the Spirit] said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. Acts 22:21

Jerusalem was a Jebusite High place and called Sodom and the Mother of Harlots.

Oh, but they did. Look above. The only God-commanded "instruments" were the two silver trumpets which were supplimented with animal horns was for the special feast days and special sabbath days. Paul said not to let anyone judge us by imposing the music to these ancient festivals:

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Col 2:14

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Col 2:15

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Col.2:16

Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Col 2:17

Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, Col2:18

Paul associates the voices of angels with clanging brass in 1 Corinthians 13. He further associates it with "speaking in tongues."

"It is a great mistake to imagine that back of their idolatry and their idol sacrifices there is nothing but an empty vacuity. True enough, as 1 Cor 8:4 makes plain, the gods of the idols have no existence whatever; no being by the name of Jupiter exists, and this is true with respect to all other gods. But something does exist, something that is far more terrible than these pseudo-gods, namely an entire kingdom of darkness which is hostile to God, a host of demons or fallen angels who are ruled by the greatest of their number, namely Satan, Eph. 2:3; 6:12. (Lenski)

For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. 1 Co.11:10KJV

But Venus (Lucifer, S.U.N., Zoe) and Bacchus are close allies. These two evil spirits are in sworn confederacy with each other, as the patrons of drunkenness and lust. So the theatre of Venus is as well the house of Bacchus: for they properly gave the name of Liberalia also to other theatrical amusements-which besides being consecrated to Bacchus (as were the Dionysia of the Greeks), were instituted by him; and, without doubt,

the performances of the theatre have the common patronage of these two deities.

That immodesty of gesture and attire which so specially and peculiarly characterizes the stage are consecrated to them-the one deity wanton by her sex, the other by his drapery;

while its services of voice, and song, and lute, and pipe, belong to Apollos, and Muses, and Minervas, and Mercuries.

The pagans and Jews believed that their dance and music could "bring one into the presence of the gods." At times, Elijah joked, the god might be asleep or just "relieving himself." However, Jesus would triumph over the Jews with a literally resurrected body and He could triumph over the musicians. They thought that they "triumphed him" when they lifted Him up on a pole. But Jesus said that this would "draw all men to men."

Charles Dailey: III. THE THEOLOGY OF THE NEW COVENANT.

The New Covenant began on the Jewish feast day of Pentecost in AD 30. We all understand that. Alexander Campbell set the Redstone Baptist Association on its ear with this profound truth. The reality of it is not up for review here. It is well established by the Lord himself.

As the moments ticked away before the crucifixion of Jesus, He was setting up a permanent memorial with his men in the upper room,

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." (Luke 22:20 NIV)

This is the first reference to the New Covenant in the New Covenant documents we call the New Testament. Jesus' death put the New Covenant into effect.

The second reference to this doctrine is in the Book of Galatians written after the Jerusalem Conference in AD 49. Nineteen years elapsed before this important bit of Restoration Theology was mentioned again. Here Paul introduces it as something these readers were not familiar with.

24 These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. Galatians 4 (NIV)

Christ in Spirit defined the New Covenant inclusively and exclusively.

In Isaiah 30 Christ said that Hell was prepared for God's enemies: the marks in sight and sound of God already driving them into hell is wind, string and percussion instruments.

In Isaiah 50 Christ warns about Jesus being SMITTEN and PLUCKED: the Jews musically mocked Jesus
Christ in Isaiah 55 identifies HIS Spirit (Mind) with His Word and dares you to SELL the free Word
In Isaiah 58 He outlaws seeking your OWN PLEASURE (see Rom 15) or SPEAKING YOUR OWN WORDS.

The assembly or gathering or "church in the wilderness" had always been for receiving instructions. Therefore, the SYNAGOGUE was the 'common people's' weekly access to the REST from "worship ritual" other than the fact that Paul said that GIVING HEED to the Word is Christian worship.

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

Ephraim Syrus On Our Lord notes that Sinai was a test. T

18. But when their heathenism from being inward became open, then Moses also from being hidden openly appeared; that he might openly punish those whose heathenism had revelled beneath the holy cloud which had overshadowed them.

But God removed the Shepherd of the flock from it for forty days, that the flock might show that its trust was fixed upon the calf.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Mark 1:13

While God was feeding the flock with all delights, it chose for itself as its Shepherd the calf, which was not able even to eat.

Moses who kept them in awe was removed from them, that the idolatry might cry aloud in their mouths,

which the restraint of Moses had kept down in their hearts. For they cried: Make us gods, to go before us.

19. But when Moses came down, he saw their heathenism revelling in the wide plain with drums and cymbals.

Speedily, he put their madness to shame by means of the Levites and drawn swords.

So likewise here, our Lord concealed His knowledge for a little when the sinful woman approached Him, that the Pharisee might form into shape his thought,
as his
fathers had shaped the pernicious calf.

That is why John who worshipped IN THE SPIRIT on the Lord's Day was ALONE and had not musical mediators understood and prophesied:

And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Re.11:8

Charles Dailey:We should inquire into this silence of 19 years. One obvious answer could be that no books were written during that time. No book was composed except James. How does James handle the subject? He is absolutely silent. It certainly seems to us important enough to discuss.

We have said--and any 5 year old entering compulsary synagogue school in Jerusalem and other places would have understand--that the so-called "music" had a rationale only in Jerusalem, in the temple COURTS and connected to priestly sacrifices. Silence is never good authority to deliberately sow discord. The historic church was not ignorant of what the Bible makes clear. The major split over music happened in the year 373 proving that the SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE does not even authorize SINGING;

To Ephraim pertains the high and unique distinction of having originated-or at least given its living impulse to-a new departure in sacred literature; and that, not for his own country merely, but for Christendom.

From him came, if not the first idea, at all events the first successful example,
of making song an essential constituent of public worship,
and an exponent of theological teaching;
and from him it spread and prevailed through the Eastern Churches, and affected even those of the West.

To the Hymns, on which chiefly his fame rests, the Syriac ritual in all its forms owes much of its strength and richness;

and to them is largely due the place which Hymnody holds throughout the Church everywhere.

And hence it has come to pass that, in the Church everywhere, he stands as the representative Syrian Father, as the fixed epithet appended to his name attests-" Ephraim the Syrian,"-the one Syrian known and reverenced in all Christendom.

Consistent with ALL scribes, they attended important events and made perfect copies of what transpired. They set others busy to transcribe and make many copies. The people who attended--just like modern meetings--wanted 'hand outs" and they were supplied.

Heredotus born about 484 BC and died 430--420 wrote extensively and sold his product: he declared that the Messiah the Jews anticipated was Dionysus. So, we know that all literature was circulated.

We know from history that the wandering singers were prostitutes and especially male instrumentalists were Sodomites. Sodom was the seat of perverted 'worship' rituals where the "musical prophesiers" always used instrument as TRICKS of their trade.

Aristotle Politics notes:

[1339b][1] instead of learning to enjoy it rightly and be able to judge it when they hear others performing, as the Spartans do? for the Spartans although they do not learn to perform can nevertheless judge good and bad music correctly, so it is said. And the same argument applies also if music is to be employed for refined enjoyment and entertainment; why need people learn to perform themselves instead of enjoying music played by others?

And we may consider the conception that we have about the gods: Zeus does not sing and harp to the poets himself.

But professional musicians we speak of as vulgar people,
and indeed we think it not
manly to perform music, except when drunk or for fun.

Charles Dailey: Also Papias claims that Matthew wrote the Gospel of Matthew in Aramaic about this same time. No one since his days has seen one. But the curious thing is that when Matthew reports the events of the upper room in his Greek version, he omits an important word. Listen carefully.

27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26 NIV)

Matthew is said to have written copies of his account in Aramaic and Greek. Indeed, it is also assumed that rather than Matthew copying from MARK as Dailey is suggesting, Mark interpreted and recorded for Matthew. It would be a miracle if many copies were NOT made and circulated from the time they began to preach.

It is the near-universal position of scholarship that the Gospel of Matthew is dependent upon the Gospel of Mark. This position is accepted whether one subscribes to the dominant Two-Source Hypothesis or instead prefers the Farrer-Goulder hypothesis.

It is also the consensus position that the evangelist was not the apostle Matthew. Such an idea is based on the second century statements of Papias and Irenaeus. As quoted by Eusebius in Hist. Eccl. 3.39, Papias states: "Matthew put together the oracles [of the Lord] in the Hebrew language, and each one interpreted them as best he could." In Adv. Haer. 3.1.1, Irenaeus says: "Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome and laying the foundations of the church." We know that Irenaeus had read Papias, and it is most likely that Irenaeus was guided by the statement he found there. That statement in Papias itself is considered to be unfounded because the Gospel of Matthew was written in Greek.

It would come as no surprise that Matthew made records from material others had recorded.

This sounds like a NEW COVENANT which was an agreement to save and accept as disciples those who believed AND were baptized:

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt 28:18

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matt 28:19

Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matt 28:20

We know for a fact that there are several "acted parables" where Jesus repudiated the musical minstrels. We know for a fact that He did not command them to TEACH the churches to play instruments.

Sounds like the disciples knew what they needed to know BEFORE Peter wrote them down. He warns them to add Christian qualities to be qualified for the eternal kingdom. Peter makes the required knowledge ATTACH to being an eye witness:

Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. 2 Pet 1:12

Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; 2 Pet 1:13

Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. 2 Pet 1:14

Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things alway in remembrance. 2 Pet 1:15

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 2 Pet 1:16

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 2 Pet 1:17

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Pet 1:18

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Pet 1:19

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Pet 1:20 [meaning "further expounding"]

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Pet 1:21

Then:

BUT there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 Pet 2: 1

And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 2 Pet 2:2

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 2 Pet 2:3

2 Peter 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness,\
        as they that
count it pleasure [Hedonism: sensual pleasure, LUST. Outlawed Rom 15]
to riot in the day time.

       Spots

        with their

Demosthenes 8 [34] As it is, by persuasive arts and caresses they have brought you to such a frame of mind that in your assemblies [Ekklesiais] you are elated by their flattery and have no ear but for compliments, while in your policy and your practice you are at this moment running the gravest risks. For tell me, in Heaven's name, if the Greeks should call you to account for the opportunities that your carelessness has already thrown away, and should question you thus:

Peter saw it all and said nothing about SINGING in the ODEING or "creating mental excitement sense." Nor, did he fail to understand that anything attached to the curse of the SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM had been removed.

Charles Dailey: He doesn't say new covenant, although Luke does when he writes. It's so important to us that we read it in, assuming that it is there. The doctrine of the New Covenant is much better understood by those of us who have Galatians, the Corinthian letters and Hebrews than those who lived in the first few years of the church. The great doctrinal truths were unfolded bit by bit by the Holy Spirit. They were not introduced abruptly.

We must have missed Zecharias and John!

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, Luke 1:68
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; Luke 1: 69
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: Luke 1: 70
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; Luke 1: 71
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to
remember his holy convenant; Luke 1: 72
The oath which he sware to our
father Abraham, Luke 1: 73
That he would grant unto us, that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, Luke 1: 74
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Luke 1:75
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; Luke 1:76

And "Anna" also, "the prophetess," he says, in like manner glorified God when she saw Christ, "and spake of Him to all them who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem." Now by all these one God is shown forth, revealing to men the new dispensation of liberty, the covenant, through the new advent of His Son. Irenaeus

If it is the blood covenant it had to be the old ANIMAL blood or the blood of the NEW COVENANT. If it is not the OLD then it must be the NEW:

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb.12:24

He sprinkles this blood on our spirits or hearts when our bodies are washed with Water.

The Jewish clergy continued their "musical sacrifices" for themselves and the temple state but the common people never worshipped with singing and instrumental accompaniment. Even the Samaritan woman grasped what the clergy, then and now, did not grasp: "When Messias comes He will TELL us all things."

For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word. Isaiah 41:28

Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion. Isaiah 41:29

BEHOLD my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:1

He shall not cry (call an assembly), nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. Isaiah 42:2

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth (trust and quietness). Isaiah 42:3

Lifting up in the Greek resources means to use exciting singing to LIFT people up to carry them away for your own USES. That is the meaning of heresy. Jesus recited prescribed Psalms but He never sang in the PLEASURING sense which would have identified Him as the Clergy's hoped-for, homosexual Dionysus. In Hebrew the word is:

Nasa (h5375) naw-saw'; ..accept, advance, arise, (able to, [armour], suffer to) bear (-er, up), bring (forth), burn, carry (away), cast, contain, desire, ease, exact, exalt (self), extol, ... lift (self) up, lofty, marry, magnify, .. stir up, / swear, take (away, up), * utterly, wear, yield

Jesus died to eleminate "spiritual anxiety created by religious ritual" and that ANXIETY is AEIRO for the purposes of kleptτ as in kleptomaniac by the use of secular HYMNING and ODING and playing the KITHERA which made them PARASITES and CYNICS or DOGS--always.

Nasa or Lifting Up in the Greek is:

Aeirτ to lift for the purpose of carrying, to bear away, carry, to raise, to bear away to undertake a long war, to be lifted up, excited. Similar word: PASSION to exalt, excite, exaggerate, to take up for ONESELF, receive a charge of cowardice.

Aeidτ is the musical METHOD and Aeirτ or heresy is the REASON to lift people up with excitement like WIND IN THE SAILS to carry them away captive or to kill them. By letting yourself be LIFTED UP with PLEASURING you are doing what Paul said that Christ WOULD NOT DO because it carried the concept of the dogs or Cynics getting virtual or literal PLEASURE out of abusing one another.

Aeido also means: I. to sing, Il., etc.:--then of any sound, to twang, of the bowstring, Od.; to whistle, of the wind, Mosch.; to ring, of a stone struck, Theocr.

Anaireτ (v. haireτ): --take up, anelontes apo chthonos having raised the victim from the ground, so as to cut its throat.. This had some connection to Amos 5 and 6 where the musical, perverted festivals were "feasts WITH and FOR dead ancestors."

2. take up and carry off, bear away, esp. prizes

"Singing served as a means of inducing ecstatic prophecy (speaking in tongues).

Thus the essential relationship between music and prophecy can be clearly seen.

This relationship also explains why the expression for "making music" and "prophesying" was often identical in the ancient tongues. origen contra celsum 8.67.

The Hebrew word Naba signifies not only "to prophesy" but also "to make music." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 39)

Haireτ or heresy has as its A meaning A take with the hand, grasp, seize, having taken up [the song],

II. take, get into one's power, hupnos passions. As in the ZOE MOVEMENT:

2. catch, take, zτon (Zoe), take in hunting, get into one's power, entrap, In a legal sense: kleptonta to convict of theft,

Jesus invites the TWOS AND THREES to "come learn of me" because you cannot SYNAGOGUE with several thousand having "worship" performed by those universally known as SORCERERS and therefore PARASITES. Paul was a Jew and because his parents had been faithful he had learned the Old Testament probably by chanting it. He knew that the NEW COVENANT was the very meaning of the coming Messiah.

As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;

My spirit that is upon thee,
and my
words which I have put in thy mouth,
shall not depart out of
thy mouth,
nor out of the mouth of
thy seed,
nor out of the mouth of
thy seeds seed,
saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Isaiah 59:21.

Later, he said:

And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Isaiah 60:3

Paul didn't have to wait many years to learn that. I am quite sure that he knew that when he was persecuting Christians:

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord;
I will put my laws
into their mind,
......and write them in their hearts:
and I will be to them a God,
...... and they shall be to me a people: Heb.8:10

In that he saith, A new covenant,
he hath made the first old.
Now that which
decayeth and waxeth old
is ready to vanish away. Heb 8:13

Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: 2 Cor 3:12

And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: 2 Cor 3: 13

But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 2 Cor 3: 14

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being READ in the synagogues every sabbath day. Ac.15:21

Moses was preached when Scripture was READ. God was not revealed in human songs and therefore they did not

But even unto this day, when Moses is READ, the vail is upon their heart. 2 Cor 3: 15
Nevertheless, when it shall
turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 2 Cor 3: 16

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the
........Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor 3: 17

Liberty means that we are NOT a slave: it means that we can come and go at will. We are not OWNED by a set of elders or insitution.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass
........ the glory of the Lord,
are
changed into the same image
........ from glory to glory,
........even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor 3: 18

Didn't Jesus say go preach the gospel, the news of the new covenant? Didn't Peter on the Day of pentecost speak from Joel about "the day of the Lord." Didn't he tell them of the Covenant made to David being fulfilled? And He "Has made known to me the way of life."

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; Ac 2:30

Didn't Stephen show that the "prophet like Moses" had come to teach? Didn't he confirm Amos, that they ignored the Law and practiced idolatry? Didn't Stephen see Jesus returned to the glory He "laid aside" to become a man, now ruling as both king and priest? You cannot have a new king without a new kingdom.

Jesus' very name of Jehovah-Saves from Zechariah meant that the branch would sit on the one throne to be both king and priest and there would be harmony between them both. Anyone who knew a piddling of the Old Testament would know that the new covenant mentality permeated the whole Christian world.

And what does this say about music? Jesus refused to sing and dance under the Old Covenant.

Charles Dailey: While no other books were composed during this period, one book was written about what happened during the period and it tells us what was taught in the years from Pentecost to about AD 60. That is the Book of Acts.

We really don't know what they had. It is generally agreed that letters were written and the Gospel story was recorded and circulated before being put in their final form. For instance, there were likely four letters to the Corinthians now grouped into two. Whether they knew of the New Covenant or not they knew that music had no place outside of the temple, outside of Jerusalem and disconnected from animal sacrifices. Any twelve-year old like Jesus or 14 year old like Josephus knew that. See (Antiq. XX.ix.6). Or Click Here to see that Josephus knew that the Levites had no authority even to sing much less play musical instruments in a religious sense.

Charles Dailey: In Acts, there was a perfect place to use the doctrine of the New Covenant -- if it were widely understood. When the problem of circumcision arose among the Gentiles and the Jerusalem Conference was called, the inspired men could have said that circumcision belonged to the Old Covenant and we are in the New Testament age.

Circumcision DID NOT BELONG to the Law of Moses. Abraham was circumcised and that was not the OLD COVENANT:

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal 3:16

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ,

the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after,
cannot disannul, that it should
make the promise of none effect. Ga.3:17

How do you suppose the church existed and baptism was how FAITH gained one the PROMISE at Baptism if the Spirit gradually revealed it two decades TOO LATE? Do you suppose that Jesus DID NOT KNOW this? Did He fail to teach or guide the Apostles into this truth. Why would Peter baptize for the explicit purpose of bestowing a NEW SPIRIT or HEART if he didn't know this at Pentecost.

The New Covenant had nothing to do with externals and INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC is about as external or carnal as you can get:

But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord,

I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer. 31:33

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord:

for I will forgive their iniquity, and
I will remember their sin no more. Jer. 31:34

The word TEACH is Lamad which was with the "oriental incentive." The Word would not be taught to the tune of a hickory stick by an expert. Rather, Paul explained that they should READ or SPEAK or TEACH one another so that the body parts supplied the whole teaching resource. A "pastor person" usurps and destroys the purpose of God.

Charles uses Paul's presence in the temple (really courts) as PROOF that there was "background music" something like Elevator Music? Because Paul APPROVED or DID NOT condemn the "music" then WE must have some command NOT to go thou and do likewise. But if you READ rather than SURMISE you will hear as we have noted that Paul saw Jesus in the Spirit as He had earlier:

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste [speed away], and

get thee quickly out of Jerusalem:
for
they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. Acts 22:18

But, Dailey: he was "where the instruments were clearly used."

If I didn't know of the many other examples where Jesus repudiates music and musicians, and if I had only Paul's experience in the temple, I would say that Jesus said: "Get out of these PLACES because as a Christian you MUST worship God in the NEW PLACE of YOUR spirit made holy.

Charles Dailey: I think that I would have said it. Instead, Peter called attention to the fact that the Gentiles had received the Holy Spirit when he preached to them. He did not appeal to the emerging New Covenant, but to the grace of God.

We have noted above that the New Covenant is defined in clear terms--excluding any warrior music--in the prophets. The synagogue read the PROPHETS each REST day. Any child would know more Prophets (Timothy) than a Phd in bible.

In the way the Holy Spirit has arranged the Bible, the direct command of Jesus to MAKE DISCIPLES by baptizing and further teaching, Mark begins to speak about the beginning or MOST IMPORTANT PART of the GOSPEL.

THE beginning [most important point] of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; Mark 1:1

As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Mark 1:2

The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Mark 1:3

Mark then begins to describe the baptism of John and of Jesus by the hands of His disciples. Can one believe that the GOSPEL was not a NEW COVENANT when the Law of Moses was NOT GOOD?

That the gospel should be preached to ALL NATIONS was something very new in the New Covenant which Peter had neglected. Click on Cornelius to see how Dailey misses the point. Cornelius was not saved nor had his sins been remitted but:

God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. Acts 15:8NIV

The idea of PREDESTINATION is tied up almost totally in God's plan to UNIT all people in His New Kingdom which is the church.

In the real Bible world, Peter also GOT UP and said:

And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the

Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. Acts 15:7

And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; Acts 15:8

And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Acts 15:9

Where is the evidence that everyone worshipped God with instruments and CONTINUED to do so because they did not have a LEGAL COMMAND to stop it. None but perverted pagans had worshipped with music: the Jews slaughtered tens of thousands of innocent animals as a way to feel satisfied because they HAD repudiated Christ when they fired God and demanded the right to worship like the nations.

The SPIRIT purifies when the Words of Christ are preached:

What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? Jn 6:62

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. Jn 6:63

Pisteuo (g4100) pist-yoo'-o; from 4102; to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to, a person or thing), i.e. credit; by impl. to entrust (espec. one's spiritual well-being to Christ): - believe (-r), commit (to trust), put in trust with.

Peter continued to define circumcision as a YOKE pointing to the Law. He did not appeal to the OLD COVENANT but to the NEW which declared that there is NOW for the first time a permanent remission of sins to the faithful believer:

Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? Acts 15:10

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they. Acts 15:11

Speaking of David who as prophet spoke by "the spirit of Christ."

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; Act 2:30

This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Act 2:32

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear Act 2:33

For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Act 2:34

Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Act 2:35

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Act 2:36

All Peter had to do was say "this is that" and most Jews understood that the time of the new covenant had come just as the prophets had proclaimed. Paul knew the prophecy and the fulfillment but this was known when Jesus trained the apostles.

Any time baptism is preached, the blood is preached. It is the blood of the New Covenant so that we are baptized in connection with the only mediator of the New Covenant. Of David, Peter said:

For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Heb.8:8

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Heb.10:29

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb.12:24

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Heb.13:20

Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Ac.3:25

Of this man's seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus: Ac.13:23

Charles Dailey: Paul and Barnabas got up. Instead of reasoning that the New Covenant did away with the Old, they demonstrated that God had been working signs and wonders among the uncircumcised.

The supernatural signs were AMONG does not mean that they were BY them.

The supernatural signs were not to SAVE but were MARKS that the apostles (only) were faithful believers in Christ and that THEY had been commissioned to preach the gospel.

Barnabas and Paul gave as VALIDATION the fact that God had worked miracles AMONG the Gentiles. This, as in the case of Cornelius, did not remit his sins but proved to THE JEWS that Gentiles could be saved. Therefore, this had nothing to do with the Old Covenant.

Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul,
........... declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them. Acts 15:12

Charles Dailey: James got up and recited the Old Testament. Instead of using Jeremiah 31 that foretold the coming of the New Covenant, he cited Amos and Amos does not mention the New Covenant.

In fact, James got up and recited PETER:

if the Old Covenant and the nation to which it was uniquely attached will be destroyed off the face of the earth except for a tiny remnant, then you have a NEW COVENANT prophesied.

And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Acts 15:13

Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. Acts 15:14

And the Old Testament was where Peter got his information

And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, Acts 15:15

After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: Acts 15:16

That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Acts 15:17

What Amos said--in fact--was that Jacob or Israel was a SINFUL KINGDOM. Therefore, Amos says that God will destroy it from the fact of the earth. Now, if you obliterate the old kingdom you need a new COVENANT.

The new covenant would have to be NEW because it included Gentiles of all nations.

The prophecy in Amos:

Even when their enemies drive them into captivity, from there I will command the sword to kill them. I will not let them out of my sight; they will experience disaster, not prosperity." Amos 9:4

The sovereign Lord who leads armies will do this. He touches the earth and it dissolves; all who live on it mourn. The whole earth rises like the River Nile, and then grows calm like the Nile in Egypt. Amos 9:5

Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the Lord. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir? Amos 9:7

Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the Lord. 9:8

For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. Amos 9:9

All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us. Amos 9:10

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old: Amos 9:11

That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the Lord that doeth this. Amos 9:12

God's Spiritual Israel would enfold the gentile nations who are called by God's name.

The old covenant was added because of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai as THE transgression. Israel became a totally sinful nation and this is described in Amos chapter 5 and 6. The KEY seen in Amos 8 was that the leaders had taken away knowledge as the water and food of the WORD. They did this specificially by adding David's dedicatory and purification MUSIC to their daily religious festivals.

James continued:

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Acts 15:18

Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: Acts 15:19

But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. Acts 15:20

For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day. Acts 15:21

The temple belonged to the military state and the common people did not go there to worship. Women and children were never required and DRAFT AGE males were required to show up three times a year.

The Qahal or synagogue always existed and anyone could attend and hear the READING of the Word of God. Reading WAS preaching and it was the direct commission to Abraham that they be a blessing to ALL NATIONS.

Therefore, James leaps back over to the Abrhamic covenant where Gentiles were always God's people because THERE WERE no Jews and no Law of Moses.

James the apostles did not preach circumcision even though many Jews continued the practice:

And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia: Acts 15:23

Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying,

Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: Acts 15:24

Charles Dailey: If the doctrine of the New Covenant was one that was understood and would carry weight, why was it not used in Acts 15? And why was it not referred to in any of the nine sermons of Peter or the nine sermons of Paul that are presented in Acts, either in part or in whole?

The NEW COVENANT is the natural and only result of the Old Testament prophecies being fulfilled. However, the LAW was not a covenant of grace or a description of spiritual relationship to God.

The same Peter had connected the NEW COVENANT to Joel because baptism involves the blood of the covenant:

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; Acts 2:16

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: Acts 2:17

And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: Acts 2:18

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; Ac.2:30

Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ac.3:24

The NEW COVENANT was the covenant of Grace made with Abraham:

Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Ac.3:25

Philip's daughters prophesying and old men getting visions was a SIGN and not an approved example. When God wanted to speak to Philip He did not speak through his musical daughters but through a male, Agabus.

James in fact speaks of the NEW COVENANT by proving from PROPHECY and the synagogues available to all students of God's Will before God abandoned Israel to "worship the starry host" that salvaton to the GENTILES was in fact the NEW COVENANT which was a restored covenant of Grace made to Abraham:

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Gal 3:19

But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. Ga.3:22

For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:28

And if ye be Christs, then are ye Abrahams seed, and heirs according to the promise. Gal 3:29

Paul, in Hebrews 8, quoted Jeremiah 31. I am sure that he knew Whom he was quoting. In Acts 15, Paul believed and James confirmed that circumcision was not necessary to bring one into covenant relationship with Christ as it had been to be in covenant relationship with the Hebrew nation long before the Law of Moses. James declares that this fulfills the prophecy that Christ will build the true house of David which will include both Jew and Gentile. This is the new covenant.

Charles Dailey: What conclusion do we draw from all of this? The Christians of the first two decades of the church did not perceive themselves as living in another covenant. As a matter of fact, they were living in a new covenant. As a matter of perception, they did not understand it. Therefore they would not be using this mature rule of theology to test their every religious action. For us to use the rule of New Covenant verses Old Covenant is out of sync with the unfolding truth of Scriptures.

AGAIN: the godly people were quarantined FROM animal sacrifices: outside of the gates.
The godly people attended SYNAGOGUE from the wilderness onward.
The Church of Christ in the Wilderness EXCLUDED any kind of noise: preaching, singing, playing.
Jesus attended SYNAGOGUE on the Sabbath--NOT the temple.
The spiritual Jews had met in the synagogue beginning as the church in the wilderness: the holy convocation was to rest, read and discuss the Word: vocal and instrumental rejoicing were EXCLUDED.

When they were ADDED to the church did they NOT even recognize that they had decided to do something radically and dangerously new?

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Acts 2:46

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47

Aineo (g134) ahee-neh'-o; from 136; to praise (God): - praise.

Paul defines the way to PRAISE or GLORIFY God:

For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. Rom 15:3

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom 15:4

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: Rom 15:5

That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Rom 15:6

Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us, to the glory of God. Rom 15:7

Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: Rom 15:8

And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause

I will confess to thee among the Gentiles,
and sing
unto thy name. Rom 15:9

The promise made by Christ the Spirit to Abraham hinged on his people being a blessing to ALL NATIONS. The Law of Moses added because of the MUSICAL TRANSGRESSION, regulated the lawless. The NEW COVENANT was really the OLD COVENANT made which did not speak of WORSHIP RITUALS but of going out to TEACH the Gentiles by "speaking that which is written." This is HOW Christ "sings to the Gentiles."

"Evangelists" fighting over MUSIC in the "assembly" simply do not have the Mind or Spirit of Christ.

IV. MUSIC AND THE FIRST COVENANT.

Charles Dailey: Now that we had discussed the progressive perception of the Theology of the New Covenant,

let's inquire about our assumption that instrumental music was a part of the first covenant.

God gave Israel an oral BOOK OF THE COVENANT of Grace. They rose up in musical idolatry and god REMOVED the COVENANT and punished them with mandatory laws and a priesthood. There is NOTHING in the covenant or the Law of Moses about instrumental music.  When they REPUDIATED GOD the kings became WARRIOR tyrants and they needed no command to all thousands of twanging bows and other instruments to PANIC the enemy.  The kings did not lead ANY religious service under the Law.

The common people were declared "strangers" and could not enter into the tabernacle. Only the Levi tribe offered sacrifices.

And THERE WAS NO INSTRUMENTAL music or SINGING under the Old Covenant.

When Israel fired God He finally turned them over to worship the Astrial deities: Gad was David's SEER which means that he was a STARGAZER or astrologer.

Hundreds of years elapse between some of the MUSICAL events. ALL of them involved the dedication or purificaiton of Kings, Nations, Officials, Cities or Temples. These were not "congregational worship with singing and instrumental accompaniment."

These instruments were instruments of warfare. When they sounded the people rather than worshiping in a musical, charismatic way fell on their face IF they were around the court.

The same musicians were overseers or slave drivers to keep the slaves building the temple just as slave masters made them "tote that barge, lift that bale."

Specificially Numbers 10:7 outlaws making loud instrumental noises except to call the assembly and outlawed "making a joyful noise before the Lord."

This is because the assembly was the synagogue and existed only for INSTRUCTING the people and reading the Word.

This happened on the Sabbaths and it was unlawful as WORK for instrumentalists to play on the seventh day Sabbaths.

ALL of the cases of the people being involved with instrumental music directly associated them to warfare, prostitute and seeing God and Ezekiel as they say their priests as SODOMITES.

Charles Dailey: What if the entire church understood the doctrine of the New Covenant on the day after Pentecost in AD 30? What if they understood that the Covenant of Moses had been replaced yesterday?

Is instrumental music a part of that covenant? Not at all.
Instrumental music being used in the praise of God was a
commandment before the first covenant.

There are no examples Charles Dailey can find where the people's congregation ever worshipped by SINGING with INSTRUMENTAL ACCOMPANIMENT. When temples were dedicated or purified the "congregation" is specified to be the king, governmental officials and the clergy all of which was contrary to God's will and had been IMPOSED because they repudiated listening to God speak to them in the always-existing synagogues even as "the church in the wilderness.'

We have the serpent in the garden of Eden called Lucifer and "the singing and harp playing prostitute." We have Laban having a wine and music party to seduce Jacob: later he wanted to hold another musical party to fleece Jacob of his cattle.

There was no music under the Patriarchal dispensation: we know that the LEVITES worshipped Levius or Dionysus in Egypt and were picked to bear the burden of the Tabernacle and the burden of Sacrifices: because the PEOPLE were excluded it was the Levi tribe which absorbed the WRATH of making noise while the priest slaughtered innocent animals and burned them.

See how the Law of Moses was imposed BECAUSE of attempting to worship God with INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC and more.

See how the prophets UNDERSTOOD the musical idolatry for which God sentenced them to WORSHIP THE STARRY HOST.

The only thing that can be found is the blowing of trumpets as part of the everlasting covenant of the religious festivals.

If instrumental music as worship is in the first covenant we should find it in the law of Moses. It simply is not there. Nu 10:7 explicitely condemns loud musical rejoicing when the congregation of Israel assembled to be instructed as opposed to being dispersed by the trumpets. As for David's changes, remember that when Israel fired God He warned them that the kings would lead them into destruction. Music in this period (not a part of the covenant) is usually associated with ignorance of the Word. Check This.

Charles Dailey: Returning to the case where Miriam used instruments to praise God after the escape from Egypt, Was that before or after Sinai and the Covenant? It was before. Was she doing this spontaneously or was there an underlying commandment from God?

Consider Psalm 81:

1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
2 Begin the music, strike the tambourine [tabret=topheth=hell], play the melodious harp and lyre.
3 Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our Feast;
4 this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

Click to see that Miriam was likely the "prototypical usurping women" Paul used. He specificially points to the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai in Romans 10 and 1 Cor. 10. Her name means BITTER and REBELIOUS.

Exodus 15:[20] sumpsit ergo Maria prophetis soror Aaron tympanum in manu egressaeque sunt omnes mulieres post eam cum tympanis et choris

Ex.15:20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

Because all of this was added as a curse God said.

Col. 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
The Shadow was the covenant with death: the Marzeah condemned in Amos.

G4639 skia skee'-ah Apparently a primary word; “shade” or a shadow (literally or figuratively [darkness of error or an adumbration]):--shadow.

Skia
2. reflection, image (in a bowl of oil), Sch.Il.17.755.
3. shade of one dead, phantom,

"The marzeah had an extremely long history extending at least from the 14th century B.C. through the Roman period. In the 14th century B.C., it was prominently associated with the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra), on the coast of Syria...

The marzeah was a pagan ritual that took the form of a social and religious association... Some scholars regard the funerary marzeah as a feast for--and with--deceased ancestors (or Rephaim, a proper name in the Bible for the inhabitants of Sheol)." (King, Biblical Archaeological Review, Aug, 1988, p. 35, 35)

"These five elements are: (1) reclining or relaxing, (2) eating a meat meal, (3) singing with harp or other musical accompaniment, (4) drinking wine and (5) anointing oneself with oil." (King, p. 37).

Click for more details on Psalm: God didn't command INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC.

First, Moses wrote the Law and God said that Israel should not "veer off either to the left or right." We have that Law in its fullness. There is no command for instruments other than the silver trumpets or shofars. Neither of these are musical instruments.

Second, we noted above that the law is specific: the trumpets could "call assembly" begin the marches or to panic the pants off the enemy in warfare or be used in the national festivals. Sounding the triump of singing and shouting was specificially outlawed when the "congregation assembled" which was usually for instructions:

But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Nu 10:7

Third, the law specificially commanded the sounding of the signal trumpets or horns for the three major yearly festivals. The Jubilee was also given over to playing the "Yobels" or "Jubals" because it was a national festival of restoring the lands. Jesus has fulfilled the final Jubilee and Passover.

Fourth, the Spirit of Christ was always careful to separate the "trumpets of God" from the "instruments of David." This could never happen if God commanded David to invent music when the law did not.

And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son. Neh 12:45

For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God. Neh 12:46

And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron. Neh 12:47

By the way, the priestly class, porters and singers got only 1% of the food and none of the cash. They got it like the threshing oxen or soldier: on a daily basis WHILE they were on duty at the temple.

Fifth, look at what the passage really says:

1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!
2 Begin the music, strike the tambourine, play the melodious harp and lyre.

3 Sound the ram's horn
........at the New Moon, and
........when the moon is full, on
........the day of our Feast;
4
this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

If we leave out the verse number cut-up, notice that in the KJV this is three complete sentences:

First sentence: SING aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

Ranan (h7442) raw-nan'; a prim. root; prop. to creak (or emit a stridulous sound), i. e. to shout (usually for joy): - aloud for joy, cry out, be joyful, (greatly, make to) rejoice, (cause to) shout (for joy), (cause to) sing (aloud, for joy, out), triumph.

Now, notice the time lapse to fetch the drums and select a Psalm:

Second sentence: Take a psalm, and bring (fetch) hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery. Psa 81:2

Next, notice a very long time lapse. It might be another month before this was actually performed. It will happen at the New Moon and when the moon is full. Then, they were to sound the ram's horn as an ordinance of God:

Third sentence: Sound the ram's horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our Feast; this is a decree for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob. Psa 81:3NIV

Sound the trumpet! Come to the
........ joyous celebrations
........ at full moon,
........ new moon, and
........ all the other holidays. Psa 81:3LIV

The approved trumpets or rams's horns were not commanded by David and therefore the command of God did not include them. This means that when we see the trumpets and musical instruments grouped together in 2 Chr 29:5 the instruments were commanded by David and the trumpets were commanded by God through Nathan. We know this because the command was in the Law long before David lived:

This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not. Psa 81:5

God commanded the ram's horn when the moon was full over four hundred years before David and the commanders of the army commanded musical instruments.

This means that where there is a misunderstanding of 2 Chronicles or Psalm 81 we should interpret them in light of numerous other passages as well as the inspired record of what God commanded.

Acaph (h623) aw-sawf'; from 622; collector; Asaph, the name of three Isr., and of the family of the first: - Asaph.

Acaph (h622) aw-saf'; a prim. root; to gather for any purpose; hence to receive, take away, i. e. remove (destroy, leave behind, put up, restore, etc.): - assemble, bring, consume, destroy, fetch, gather, recover from leprosy...

Asaph understood that the instruments of musical rejoicing were not the law of Moses. He knew that the ram's horns or trumpets were according to the Law. Furthermore, we have the command for the trumpets in the Law of Moses and do not have the musical rejoicing in the Law of Moses. Nu 10:7 explicitly forbids it when the "congregation" comes together for instruction.

But when the congregation is to be gathered (Qahal, synagogue) together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not sound an alarm. Nu 10:7

Now, when you assemble or synagogue (Hebrew Qahal) this screeching is OUTLAWED:

Ruwa (h7321) roo-ah'; a prim. root; to mar (espec. by breaking); fig. to split the ears (with sound), i. e. shout (for alarm or joy): - blow an alarm, cry (alarm, aloud, out), destroy, make a joyful noise, smart, shout (for joy), sound an alarm, triumph.

What is that EVERLASTING ORDINANCE GOD GAVE IN THE WILDERNESS? Was it "congregatonal worship?"

The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come. Nu 10:8NIV

When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the LORD your God and rescued from your enemies. Nu 10:9

Also at your times of rejoicing--your appointed feasts and New Moon festivals--you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the LORD your God." Nu 10:10

Paul understood that both had been done away in the new covenant:

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; Col 2:14

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Col 2:15

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Col.2:16

Judas as Satan's agent and the clergy tried to triumph over Jesus to make Him dance to the effeminate, Bacchus music. Jesus turned the tables and triumphed over them by an open show and not in the pretend musical triumph.

Paul said that we no longer come to the sound of the trumpet.

Psalm 81 continues to indicate that music was a prelude to judgment just as we have noted of Paul wom Charles Dailey has "worshiping with instrumental music background as an APPROVED PATTERNISM for Christian assemblies."

But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. Ps 81:11
........ So I gave them up unto their own hearts lust: and they walked in their own counsels. Ps 81:12

Then believed they his words;
........they sang his praise. Psa 106:12

They soon forgat his works;
........they waited not for his counsel: Psa 106:13

But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
........and tempted God in the desert. Psa 106:14

And he gave them their request;
........but sent leanness into their soul. Psa 106:15

From the uttermost part of the earth
........have we heard songs,
........even glory to the righteous.

But I said, My leanness, my leanness,
........woe unto me the treacherous dealers
........have dealt treacherously;
........yea, the treacherous dealers
........have dealt very treacherously. Is.24:16

Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
....... send among his fat ones leanness;
....... and under his glory he shall kindle
....... a burning like the burning of a fire. Isa 10:16

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire,
....... and his Holy One for a flame:
....... and it shall burn and devour his
....... thorns and his briers in one day; Isa 10:17

The fact is that according to Amos the nation used MUSIC as part of their religious festivals along with WINE and WOMEN while leaving the people hungering and thirsting and dying for lack of the WORD.

When Israel demanded a king so that they could worship like the nations, God turned them over to their own lusts. David, not God, added musical instruments to the trumpets of God. While addressing Israel spoken of by Amos, Judas was in some cases worse:

At every high place they burned incense, as the nations whom the LORD had driven out before them had done. They did wicked things that provoked the LORD to anger. 2K.17:11

Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even conformed to the standards of the nations around you. Eze.5:7

You say, "We want to be like the nations, like the peoples of the world, who serve wood and stone." But what you have in mind will never happen. Eze.20:32

Charles Dailey: Notice carefully where this originated:

5 He established it as a statute for Joseph when he went out against Egypt, where we heard a language we did not understand.
6 He says, "I removed the burden from their shoulders; their hands were set free from the basket.
7 In your distress you called and I rescued you, I answered you out of a thundercloud; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. <Selah>

"The statute, law, ordinance here mentioned manifestly relates especially to the feast of the passover, which, when it occurred at the new moon, was attended with the solemn blowing of trumpets, as the parallel passage shows: Ex. 13:8, 9, 14-16.

If this is not deemed satisfactory, let the statute, law or ordinance be pointed out which enforced the use of timbrels, harps and psalteries upon the Israelites in connection with their exodus from Egypt.

Until that is done loose assertion will avail nothing." (Girardeau, George, Instrumental Music in Church Worship, p. 76).

Charles Dailey: Miriam was not acting on her own. God had commanded this grand national event of singing praises to his name with every bit of instrumentation that they could use. He even sent the song that they were to sing after leaving Egypt.

This is called The Song of Moses and Not the Song of Miriam. As far as we can determined Miriam did not stay around to hear the SONG recited BY MOSES. Rather, in a presumptions way she had to TAKE THE LEAD. She and the women just recited a phrase probably over and over.

Ex.15:20 And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

Of Miriam who led Aaron astray--God does not speak to the PROUD.

And they said, Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the Lord heard it. Nu 12:2

(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) Nu 12:3

And the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. Nu 12:4

And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. Nu 12:5

And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. Nu 12:6
My servant Moses is not so,
who is faithful in all mine house. Nu 12:7

With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? Nu 12:8

I think that Miriam was not a PROPHET, was not a HIM and was NOT FAITHFUL. Why didn't God remind Miriam that she was a "prophesying prophet" in the first song? It was because it was not true and she was not a him.

When God's glory departed Miriam was struck with leprosy.

When God speaks to a prophet he lets it be known what He has spoken. In the earlier song Miriam led the women away from Moses who was reciting the "song." While this was a secular act it was prophetic of what she would do later trying to lead Israel away from God by leading them away from His only spokesman. It was only when the secular practice reserved totally for women or effeminate men was claimed to be revealing a message from God that Miriam was proven not to be a spokesperson for God. God often lets people set themselves up and He knocks them down.

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

Charles Dailey: Where is instrumental music in the Covenant of Moses? The ram's horn was used as a call, but not in general singing. Where is any mention of praise using instruments? There was none. The use of instruments is not mentioned after Sinai for several centuries.

I hink that we have missed a vital part of the Mount Sinai musical idolatry. RISING UP TO PLAY repudiated The Book of The Covenant by singing, dancing, playing instruments and sexual practices. This MUSICAL IDOLATRY. It is a fact that MUSICAL WORSHIP because it was polluting and pagan is the "because of transgression'" for which God imposed The Book of The Law to legislate for a lawless people. Then and now "musical worship" MARKED people as pagans seeing God as a sexual or homosexual partner. Click for more.

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

The Jews sang in the type of the Egyptian threnodies (elegies for the dead):

Thus they made a golden bull, the image of an animal that was held to be the most sacred in that land; they offered unholy sacrifices, performed impious dances and sang hymns which differed in no way from the pagan mourning songs. Philo, De specialibus legibus

[Jesus threw them out more or less violently]

"This reference probably indicates the use of songs from the cult of Osiris... it can hardly be denied that Egyptian influence on Jewish musical practices was quite significant. This would stand to reason because of the high quality of Egyptian cultic music. The tambourine or timbrel, a hoop of bells over which a white skin was stretched, came from Egypt. Miriam used this instrument to accompany the singing and dancing on the shores of the Red Sea (Ex. 15).

"The trumpet... was the signaling instrument of the Egyptian army. The name of the Sistrum (2 Sam 6:5) was mena'ane'im. It was the Egyptian kemken used in the cult of Isis.

The music during the transferring the Ark to Sion (David rose up to play)

and the dances of the women at the Shiloh (Judges 21:21), were similar to the Egyptian liturgy and parades. Click to see the Egyptian Parallels

Charles Dailey: While instruments were used later by the prophets themselves in the time of King Saul, God expanded their use in the Temple to include the Levites as we read in 2 Chronicles 29:25:

He stationed the Levites in the temple of the LORD with cymbals, harps and lyres in the way prescribed by David and Gad the king's seer and Nathan the prophet; this was commanded by the LORD through his prophets. (2 Chronicles 29:25 NIV)

Then it is a fact that instruments were NOT included in the Law of Moses which was hundreds of years before David the king and the commanders of the army USED the surplus warrior, panic musicians to give glory to their own kingdom. The SONS OF THE PROPHETS were not writing prophets: they were musical prophesiers from the Philistine High Place used by God as a MARK or SIGN against Israel for "FIRING" Him and demanding a human king. The SONS learned from the FATHERS who were not godly writing prophets:

The Levites STOOD absolutely silent in ranks.
All of the sacrifices  and atoning blood for king, kingdom, temple and clergy (NOT commanded by God)
THEN Hezekiah decided to burn some GOATS to try to appease Israel (the Instrumental Sectarians).
When the Levites actually PERFORMED: It was by the Command of David.

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Gen 4:21

The SONS handled musical instruments and this is the Hebrew:

Taphas (h8610) taw-fas'; a prim. root; to manipulate, i. e. seize; chiefly to capture, wield; spec. to overlay; fig. to use unwarrantably: - catch, handle, (lay, take) hold (on, over), stop, * surely, surprise, take.

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. Ge.39:12

Taphas relatets to the tambourine or HELL itself at Jerusalem

If we really care we have to do two things: First, to determine what was commanded and, Second, to determine whether this passage as translated agrees with many other parallel passages which deny that God commanded instrumental music for congregational worship.

The temple had been so polluted by pagan religions just as it was when Zeus-Dionysus singers, musicians and prostitutes held their "worship services" right in the holy places.

The sacrifices had deserted Jerusalem as indeed had God. Altars were set up out in the country.

Hezekiah, to get the city set for an invasion needed to collect the people back in or around Jerusalem. The only way to do this was to clean out the garbage and destroy the "denominational altars."

The Levitical singers, musicians and porters COULD NOT enter into the holy places even to clean out the garbage.

The congregation--as in all sacrificial systems--consisted of the king, clergy and government officials: the PEOPLE did not participate except to fall on their face as they were SHUT OUT of the temple walls when the Levites made a great, crashing sound.

This was not a congregational worship service but a "stop the plague" service which purified the clergy and buildings and grounds.

The kingdom of the Lord was the kingdom which Israel demanded as suitable to compete with the other nations and to worship like the other nations. The kingdom was against God's will. However, He gave it rules for government to prevent greater damage to the people. As a church can do wrong things and still be a church of Christ, the kingdom of God contained some very wrong things. For instance,

And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 1Sa 8:7

And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods. 2Chr 13:8

Second, many older versions do not translate this passage favorable to God ever commanding instrumental music.

We noted above that Asaph, one of the key overseers (excellers) of music set us straight on this. The musical rejoicing was from David and his prophets but the trumpets were commanded by God.

When David took the census to use in establishing the corvee or slave labor groups he violated the law, did not redeem the men and God brought on a great plague. To stop the plague David was permitted to offer sacrifices in Jerusalem. David was too fearful to ever return to Gibeon to "enquire of the Lord." Therefore, Jerusalem became the seat of the Levitical leaders running the civil-religious "like the nations" organization while the priests were left in Gibeon. Hezekiah would repeat this "plague-stopping" ritual but only the structures were purified while the music played. Others note that:

"NO command of God was ever so ascribed to man. The use of the instruments of music in the Old Testament were of man, not of God." (Tract on music, David Lipscomb).

"At the dedication of the later edifice, the priests blew the trumpets at the same time that the Levites sang and played upon instruments of music,

so as 'to make one sound;' but it is evident that on that great occasion of rejoicing, what was aimed at was not musical harmony, but a powerful crash of jubilant sound. We are shut up to the conclusion that

there was nothing in the tabernacle-worship, as ordered by Moses, which could be justly characterized as instrumental music." (George Girardeau, p. 29 - a Presbyterian).

The Syriac version (plus Arabic and Vulgate) has a different view consistent with the Law and other parallel passages such as Psalm 81:

Hezekiah appointed the Levites in the house of the Lord, with instruments of music, and the sound of harps,

and with the hymns of David, and hymns of Gad, the King's prophet;
for David
sang the praise of the Lord his God, as from the mouth of the prophets" (Syriac Version).

Gad was a STARGAZER who worked for David. Therefore, God used him to tell David that since fear prevented him from returning to Gibeon, he could have an alternative altar at Jerusalem, a Jebusite High Place called Sodom and Egypt.

The subject passage has two sets of commandments. They are very clear in other passages but 2 Chr 29:25 can be mixed up to have God commanding David's instruments. If so, they would be called the instruments of God and not the instruments of David.

The king never prescribe religious worship. Remember how Saul got into trouble? However, the worship in Jerusalem was a combination of religious and civil ritual. Therefore, the combined animal sacrifice includes both the commands of the king and the king's state seer as well as the commands of God through Nathan:

And king Ezekias rose early in the morning, and gathered the chief men of the city, and went up to the house of the Lord. 2 Chr 29:20LXX

After the kingdom, holy things and Israel had been atoned for they brought the sin offering.

And the priests slew them and offered their blood as a propitiation on the altar; and they made atonement for all Israel: for the king said, The whoe-burnt-offering, and the sin-offerings are for all Israel 2Chr 29:24LXX

And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, and lutes, and harps, according to

1. the commandment of king David, and of Gad the king's seer,
2. and Nathan the prophet:

for by the commandment of the Lord the order was in the hand of the prophets 2 Chr 29:25LXX

And the

1a. Levites stood with the instruments of David,
2a. and the priests with the trumpets. 2 Chr 29:26LXX

Again there are two sets of authorities and two sets of commands. Gad was the kings seer and not an inspired prophet. Nathan was God's prophet. The command can be understood by the act: musical instruments came from the civil authority and the trumpets came from God. The Levites played the musical instruments but the priests blew the trumpet as a signal device. The Levites are accused of leading Israel astray and their musical function is lacking in the Ideal Temple in Ezek 40ff.

The part commanded by David and his civil seer was the musical instruments:

David, together with the commanders (sar) of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. (1 Chronicles 25:1 NIV)

When a command of God through the king and commanders of the army this is not through the true prophets or priests in a religious sense:

Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes (Sar), by the word of the Lord. 2Chr 30:12

Sar (h8269) sar; from 8323; a head person (of any rank or class): - captain (that had rule), chief (captain), general, governor, keeper, lord, ([-task-]) master, prince (-ipal), ruler, steward.

Now, look at what actually happened:

And Ekekias told them to offer up the whole-burnt-offerings on the altar: and when they began to sing to the Lord, and

the trumpets (of God implied)

accompanied

the instruments of David king of Israel 2Chr 29:27LXX

And all the congregation worshipped, and the psalm-singers were singing and the trumpets sounding, until the whole-burnt-sacrifice had been completely offered. 2 Chr 29:28LXXX

The "congregation" did not include the "common people" but only those associated with the temple or civil state. The "loud noise" was NOT worship: worship meant to bow or fall on their face. As in the book of Revelation, you can HOLD but you cannot PLAY harps and fall on your face at the same time.

This was not "instrumental music." Rather, it was a "loud crashing sound" as a signal and a lethal warning to all of the people to fall down and worship until the sacrifice had been completely offered. You cannot have the music without the madness of animals being burned.

Now that the civil and religious princes had "consecrated yourelves to the Lord" they were able to bring the sacrifices of the clergy congregation to the sacrifice. Consecrating all of the priests and Levites was a huge service. After this Hezekiah said: "So the service was established in the house of the Lord." This was clearly a purification animal sacrifice and not "congregational worship."

Only then was the members of the "tribal" congregation called together to worship in the now-purified temple and clergy. The people gathered to keep the God-ordained festival of Passover.

As soon as this service was finished, all of the people under God's direction went out and destroyed all of the "churches of the pagans."

The Syriac is consistent with every passage in Scripture except the one cited. For instance,

God: Then Solomon offered burnt offerings unto the Lord on the altar of the Lord, which he had built before the porch, 2Chr 8:12

Even after a certain rate every day, offering according to the commandment of Moses, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts, three times in the year, even in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles. 2 Chr 8:13

David: And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded. 2Chr 8:14

"It was by the hand or commandment of the Lord and his prophets that the Levites should praise the Lord; for so the Hebrew text may be understood:

"and it was by the order of David that so many instruments of music should be introduced into the Divine service." (Adam Clark, Commentary on 2 Chron. 29:25).

Later, as Israel was self-destructing by turning the religious festivals into a wine and music festival, music is the culprit to their downfall (Isa 5; Amos 5; 6)

"Amos, we are told, is the sharpest critic of musical instruments in pre-Christian times. through him God expresses a preference for justice and honesty over bloody sacrifice and its attendant music of song and instruments. This sentiment, we are told, was revolutionary, making part of a similar change felt over the civilized world... And overall view of the evidence, McKinnon thinks, reveals a relationship between the three elements: a higher conception of God, a rejection of sacrifice, and a rejection of musical instruments." (Green, William M, Pepperdine College, in Restoration Quarterly, v. 19, 1966).

Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the Lord by the hand of the priests the Levites, whom David had distributed in the house of the Lord,

to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, as it is written in the law of Moses,
with rejoicing and with singing, as it was ordained by David. 2Chr 23:1

Those who haven't made well-trod tracks through the Old Testament almost violently object that if God had not approved what David did He would have said so. The astute Bible student will see that He did over and over.

Many recognized Bible scholars know that this form of worship was self appointed and not from God. If it had been from God Israel would not have been destroyed:

"...these same people were punctilious in their religious observances. Never did such abundant sacrifices smoke to Yahweh from the altars at Dan and Bethel and other sanctuaries in Israel; and the note of praise rose regularly and loudly from tongue and harp. Was not this the worship in which Yahweh delighted? So they thought, but the voice of Yahweh through His prophet told a different story." (F.F. Bruce, Israel, p. 58).

Charles Dailey: Our God wants to be praised and he loved the combination of words and music that exploded into use during David's time. These were the golden years of Israel. As the nation began its descent into idolatry, the use of both voices and instruments is harder to find in the Scriptural record. When Judah was taken into captivity, they composed one more psalm, number 137:

This may be because the "music" was really noise and connected to animal sacrifices. Furthermore, any reader of the Word would understand that God had given the king, kingdom, monarchy and temple as a CONCESSION because the kings had the task of leading the nation into captivity and death.

God gave animal sacrifices because they rejected Him and in fact rejected the Spirit of Christ. The Jews thought that they were "acts of worship" which pleased God and did not know that he was forcing them to slaughter their prime income to try to gain security which God could give them free of charge.

He, in fact, HATED the sacrifices because they were slaughtering TYPES of God in Christ. Without animal sacrifices any Jewish kid would know that the INSTRUMENTS were in fact unlawful. Therefore, God hated their instrumental music, never says that He LOVED IT and in fact always associated it as a MARK of people who would not listen to His Word and live right.

1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion.
2 There on the
poplars we hung our harps,
3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!"
4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD
while in a foreign land?

"Hanging their harps" had an intimate connection to Orpheus--the father of musical worship--whose MARK was the willow tree. The exile rapidly became happy but they understood that playing the instruments outside of Jerusalem and not in connection with the "like the nation's" temple was not remotely possible.

The bread and wine Passover festival was instituted by the Babylonians. The Jews reserved a fifth cup which was not fermented and was reserved for the time when John and Messiah came. At the institution of the Passover, the did not get drunk on the four cups but probably used a FIFTH cup as a MARK that Messiah had come. At the drinking of the fifth cup they would sing Psalm 137 which testified to the end of the Old Covenant and PROVES that they "hanged their harp." Jesus MARKED Judas whos "bag" was for carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments. Judas HANGED himself when he would not TRIUMPH over Jesus (the musical term from Numbers 10:7) with instrumental music as Psalm 41prophesied and as much clearer in the Dead Sea Translation.

Well, don't stop in the middle as with all musical proof texts. Find out that it was not the WORD or God's symbolic presence but JERUSALEM wich was a Jebusite High Place and is called by John in revelation EGYPT (slavery) and SODOM (musical rituals always meaning perverted).

If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. Psalm 137:5

If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. Psalm 137:6

But Jerusalem was a Jebusite High Place. God permitted an alternate sacrifice when David was too fearful to go before Him in Gibeon. God always identified Jerusalem as SODOM. However, the people worshipped the temple more than God.

You betchum, Red Ryder, home is where the money and power is. Then, go on-----

O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Psalm 137:8

Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little (sucklings) ones against the stones. Psalm 137:9

Isa 5; Amos 5; 6; Ezek 33 and others implicate instrumental music in the idolatry which destroyed Israel.

The Jews would have their noses rubbed in music to force the worship of the phallic idols in Babylon. The temple tradition demanded the rituals of animal sacrifice be in Jerusalem during animal sacrifices. This was the highest joy a Jew could know. This did not permit worship "in Spirit and in Truth." Therefore, away from the temple it would have been unlawful for them to be involved even in imitation worship for which they were noted.

It is remotely possible that Jesus sang the 137th Psalm which spoke of hanging up the harps on the willows. This makes sense because Jesus was sending the new disciples into all the world. Outside of Jerusalem, the Temple and animal sacrifices it would no longer be suitable to make the great noise while the animals were being slaughtered and burned:

How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land? Psa 137:4

Any school boy understood that the "music" under the KING and COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY was to be used in CANAAN, in JERUSALEM or around it and IN THE TEMPLE COURTS.

Edersheim, Chapter 12 notes of the Passover: "Exceptionally a fifth cup was drunk, and over it 'the great Hallel' was said, comprising Psalms 120-137."

The river (or canal) and the willow are symbolic of worship like that of Orpheus who leaned upon the willow and played. his harp We believe that this is a message which says that Israel will not be involved with necromancy and enchantment for which the Chaldeans and others were noted. Remember that Daniel refused to bow to instrumental music when commanded by the Babylonians. Many of the musical terms and names of instruments are from the Greek and the musical guilds harken back to Babylon:

"The very name Orpheus is just a synonym for Bel, the name of the great Babylonian god, which, while originally given to Cush, became hereditary in the line of his deified descendants. Bel signifies 'to mix,' as well as to confound,' and 'Orv' in Hebrew, which in Chaldee becomes Orph signifies also 'to mix.' Bu 'Orv,' or 'Orph,' signifies

besides 'a willow-tree;'

and therefore, in exact accordance with the mystic system, we find the symbol of Orpheus among the Greeks to have been a willow tree.

Thus Pausanias, after referring to a representation of Actaeon, says, 'If again you look to the lower parts of the picture, you will see after Patroclus,

Orpheus sitting on a hill, with a harp in his left hand, and in his right hand the leaves of a willow tree.'

He is represented leaning on the trunk of this tree.' The willow leaves in the right hand of Orpheus, and the willow tree on which he leans, sufficiently show the meaning of the name." (Hislop, Alexander, The Two Babylons, p. 124, Loizeaux Brothers)

"Since the Babylonian Jews were unable to participate in the worship of the cultus as in former days, the exile marked an important turning-point in their religious developmemt.

Open-air meetings by the Kabar irrigation-canal replaced gatherings in the Temple and its precincts, a non-sacrificial worship emphasized confession, fasting, prayer, and the reading of the Law, and initial improvisations were developed to the point where the faithful community aimed at as great a spiritual differentation from the pagan Babylonians as was possible.

"With the development of house-gatherings and the increased importance attached to the knowledge and observance of the Torah, there was laid the basis for subsequent synagogue-worship, an institution that owes its origin to the diligence of Ezekiel." (Harrison, R. K., Introduction to the Old Testament, Eerdmans, p.414).

Charles Dailey: Using singing and music in the praise of God was not a part of the Law of Moses. It is first seen before the Law given on Sinai.

But all scholars understand that this was MUSICAL IDOLATRY and that the Law was given at Sinai BECAUSE of this transgression.

God tested Israel for 40 days just as Satan tempted Jesus. God had given Israel The Book of the Covenant which was a covenant of grace as a restatement of the Abrahamic Covenant which was not restored until Jesus died on the cross. The people rose up to PLAY: this was singing, dancing and playing instruments in connection with a pagan festival such as the Marzeah, the Agapae or other polluted festivals. As a result, God saw this as their prayer to worship THE STARRY HOST (Stephen, Acts 7 and other examples). He TURNED THEM OVER to pagan rituals including Saturn or 666. Click to see if you want to follow these people back to Egypt, Jerusalem, Hagar, Mount Sinai or Sodom. Click again to see how EVERYONE knew that this was a fatal fall back into musical idolatry worshiping the Egyptian (Babylon triad).

Charles Dailey: Then it came into use during the time of Saul through the prophets and was developed to it maximum in the reigns of David and Solomon. It declined as Israel lost the heart for true worship and was lost entirely while Israel was captive.

The schools of the prophets were "would be" professionals who hung around the high places. They could find a lost goat or increase your pleasure but always for a price. When God was "fired" and Saul was selected it was to worship like the nations. God warned through Samuel that the king would take their tithes and their male and female children and make them servants of the king. The male and female singers of Solomon were "for my own pleasure."

These were people who wanted to be prophets in the MERCINARY sense of the word. They pretended to gt their messages from God and used charismatic means to prove to the CUSTOMERS that they were indeed in contact with the 'gods' because they drove themselves into ecstatic madness.

"Among these pupils is found to much greater extent than among the teachers a certain ecstatic [charismatic, insane] feature. They arouse their feelings through music and induce a frantic condition which also affects others in the same way, in which state they 'prophesy' and, throwing off their garments, fall to the ground. In later times too we find traces of such ecstatic phenomena. Thus e.g. in Zech 13:6; 1 Ki. 20:37-38,

the 'wounds' on the breast or on the forehead recall the self-mutilation of the priests of Baal (1 Ki. 18:28). The deeds, suggestive of what the dervishes of our own day do, probably were phenomena quite similar to the action of the prophets of the surrounding tribes" (Int Std Bible Ency., Prophecy, p. 2462)

"'Now they leap spiritedly into the air, now they bend their knees to the ground and revolve on them like persons possessed." Now compare with the passage in 1 K 19:18 where God promises Elijah that he will spare 'those who have not bent the knew before Baal.'... This also explains Elijah's reproach in 1 K 18:21 where he accuses those who would serve both Baal and Yahweh at the same time of 'hobbling first on one leg, then on the other." (de Vaux, p. 241).

"We have evidence of ritual dances in the context of other Syrian cults. One of the Ras Shamra poems, in a passage which is unfortunately full of gaps, mention mrqdm 'dancers' apparently in connection with a sacrifice. Herodian depicts Heliogabalus at a sacrifice to his god of Emesa, 'dancing round the altars to the sound of every kind of musical instruments; with him certain women of his country performed a sprightly round, with cymbals and tambourines in their hands." (de Vaux, p. 241).

"This is how Apuleius describes the cortege of the Syrian goddess '...they began to howl all out of tune and hurl themselves hither and thither, as though they were mad. They made a thousand gestures with their feet and their heads; they would bend down their necks and spin round so that their hair flew out in a circle; they would bite their own flesh; finally, every one took his two-edged weapon and wounded his arms in divers places." (de Vaux, p. 242)

God sent destruction of the wheat harvest to prove that He, and not their new fertility gods, was the True fertility God. He sent the musical, prophesing (raving madness) as a supernatural sign to the king and the nation that they had sealed their own doom. When Saul was "turned into another man" history shows that he was beside himself or actually mad. This would take a placid farm boy and turn him into a tyrant able to beat the enemy. Later music by David drove him over the edge so that an evil spirit was sent into him to destroy him.

Charles Dailey: They restored it to a shadow of it former greatness in the second temple and in the Temple of Herod in the days of Jesus.

The restoration of the NON INTOXICATED form of the Passover as the Lord's Supper and other events were MARKS or "parables" to hide the truth from the fools according to Jesus in Matthew 13. There are several other acted parables such as the procession into Jerusalem which MARKED God repudiation of musical processions.

Jesus repudiated the clergy and pointed to their devotion to Dionysus as a continuation of the sexual and homosexual Abomination in the temple.

Jesus CAST OUT the minstrels or flute players usina a term meaning 'like dung." This was a symbol of casting out both the pagan, homosexual minstrels and the Levitical "Musicians" whose primary job was to serve (meaning hard bondage) the priests as they worked in a flood of blood, urine and DUNG in performing the horrors of animal sacrifices as PUNISHMENT for rejecting God's Word.

Josephus warns the Levites that they were the cause of the loss of nationhood before and were going to do it again. They wanted to wear the linen (feminine). This is clear in the Idealized Temple beginning in Ezekiel chapter 40.

Psalm 22 and Psalm 41 prophesy of the musical attempt to triumph over or oppress Messiah because the "musicians" warriors and not 'worship leaders.'

Revelation, especially chapter 18, prophesies of the end-time Babylon Whore worship which involved all kinds of instrumental music.

By His permissive will and probably direct providence, God in Christ saw to it that the temple would be destroyed, stone by stone, for the third time.

Why would Jesus and the Apostles give uf the chance to STEAL the church house of the Jews.

Charles Dailey: SUMMARY FOR THE PRESENTATION:

1. The Scriptural definition of prophets and their tasks includes the use of instrumental music. Not all prophets foretold the future; not all prophets were music people.

The New Testament church had both prophets and prophetesses. By definition, some of these were music people since there is no authorization for changing their job description.

This is not true of the WRITING PROPHETS. Charles Daily is recommending the PROPHESIERS who were universally pagan and polluted. The women prophesiers and men dreaming dreams was a MARK to identify the end of such necromancers or sorcerers or soothsayers just as Zechariah had warned so we don't get fooled.

See how Elisha called in a HARPIST as he deliveraged a PROPHESYING which spelled the doom of the AHAB and JEZEBEL rulers. The king was deluded into DESTROYING the very source of TAXING AND TITHING which he went out to RECOVER.

It is a fact that the church inherited the uncovered PROPHESIERS who were "just out of paganism." Along with the musical prophesiers who were usually women or perverted males went sexual perversion and incest--a man having his father's wife.

Therefore, Paul prohibited the uncovered prophesying outside the assembly (1Cor 11:5) because it was probably the pagan singing with instrumental music. Only in 11:17 does he begin to describe their assemblies which "did more harm than good." During the assembly the women were to remain seated and silent in the "rule over" sense. Paul allowed men to prophesy only if they were prophets. He implicitly states that not a one of them were so gifted. Click Here for Irenaeus' comments about artificial prophesying.

Charles Dailey: 2. The national heritage of the Jews was saturated with instrumental music for both secular and sacred purposes. If a change in direction had been intended by God, why were the inspired writers silent on that change of direction? If we claim that the New Testament is silent on the use of instruments, then we are acknowledging that there is not a new rule for the worship of God.

If God turned the national leadership over to worship the starry host and finally abandoned them when they demanded a king like the nations, why would Charles Dailey use that as a pattern for the Church which existed as the synagogue or Church in the wilderness want to use that when the church is defined as A School of the Word of Christ?

The MUSIC word is not used of the Spiritual worship of God in the entire Bible. On the contrary the "music" word always says to God: "We will not listen to your words." There is no proof needed: if you are listening to music which stimulates your PLEASURE ZONES you cannot be listening to God in the new PLACE of your human spirit.

The loud NOISE had meaning only in connection with the Sacrificial System which was ADDED because of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. Does Charles Daily and the "musical" people want to rise up in PLAY as Paul warned in 1 Corinthians 10?

The Levites served the PRIESTS and the KING and not God because He did not need sacrifices. If Charles Dailey wants Levitical musicians does he deny that there is a NEW PRIESTHOOD?

Paul in Hebrews pretty well said that WE ARE NOT COME to the sound of the trumpet.

Music was NEVER music but "noise" in the inspired record. It was a clergy role to signal the beginning and ending of worship (falling down) during animal sacrifices. The Levites were elevated to this role by David. Ezekiel, Josephus and church history shows that it was without authority and was the cause of Israel's fall as punishment for their firing of God and hiring a secular king so that they could worship like the nations. Click Here for evidence.

Most musical appeals are to the Old Testament (record). However, the Christians did not worship in the temple, did not make animal sacrifices, did not tithe, did not keep the law, did not keep the Sabbath, did not keep the feast days and Paul was afraid of those who Judaized and tried to force special days and seasons which included music, upon others. Paul knew that he was so different as to be heretical:

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets: Ac.24:14

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ep.6:18

For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. Ph.3:3

If you don't keep worship in the new PLACE of the Spirit as Jesus in John 4 demanded, Paul tells you what will happen to you based on the universal meaning of music in "religions"

Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Ph 3:2

I was in the Spirit on the Lords day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Re.1:10

Charles Dailey: 3. The New Covenant began on Pentecost. But that perception was not present in the years immediately following Pentecost. The church of AD 30 knew that Jesus of Nazareth was their Messiah. None of them could have talked with our theologians about the New Covenant, for it was not a part of their understanding of Christ.

The most hopeful expectation of many Jews came from the prophecy of men like Jeremiah who promised a new covenant where God would write His Spirit word upon their mind or spirit. Jesus died to remove the laded burden and the burden laders: burdens are specificially the songs which created spiritual anxiety.

How could they have missed Stephen prove that the Temple and its "like the nation's rituals" was not God's ideas: He allowed worship at Jerusalem or Sodom at the Jebusite High place because by demanding a king they had brought on the captivity and death sentence imposed because of MUSICAL IDOLATRY at Mount Sinai?

If Jesus predicted that the temple--for the third time--would be destroyed did He not recognize that the CHURCH HOUSE and the CHOIR and the BAND would be a grand way to show continuation of music? What do you think, Charles Dailey, happened to the Levitical musicians and all of those HARPS? People are still looking for them.

The fact that permanent records were collected afterward does not altar the fact that the people had expected a kingdom but did not grasp its spiritual nature:

AND he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power. Mark 9:1

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Lu.24:49

If the kingdom was coming in a visible way it must have a king. A king must have a territory and he must have a covenant or constitution.

I am not sure that they could have heard the Pentecost sermon and missed the message about the new Covenant which everyone knew was connected with Messiah and the coming with power. I am not sure how we can know what they know. Arlie Hoover calls this "chronological snobbery." Those old timers didn't even know what they had been "baptized into." One might be transported to the USA from Russia and suddenly begin to enjoy the new relationship without really knowing where he was unless someone told him. His understanding did not change the facts.

Most knowledgeable Jews knew that music was never a part of "congregational worship" and that it was prohibited (Num 10:7). This did not prevent the Kingdom rulers from imposing music even as they led the defectors to captivity and death. The pagans knew that instrumental worship was a sure sign of paganism and Christianity, therefore, would have nothing superior to offer.

God did not authorize, and the prophets condemned music as worship in all covenants and it will be the sign of end-time marriage with commerce (body worship) (Rev 18).

Charles Dailey: 4. Instrumental music was used to worship prior to the first Covenant and was not fully developed until hundreds of years after the Covenant was given. Ending the Covenant would not end the use of instrumental music in the Jews' religious life because it is not even mentioned in the documents that define the Covenant.

There is only one example of music used before Mount Sinai: that was the pattern Paul may have used of usurping women. Moses and the men SPOKE the song of victory after safety from the Red Sea. Mirian caused the women to go out (egress) or escape with singing, dancing and clanging on the tambourine or sistrum of her role in the worship of Hathor as a virtual princess in Egypt.

There was nothing "worshipful" about Miriam--meaning bitter--and the women.

This "prophesying" was soothsaying: just what the Levites who led Israel astray after David. When she claimed to be a REAL prophetess God smacked her with a dose of leprosy.
THE MUSIC word is never used of worship in the Bible. The Law was ADDED BECAUSE OF TRANSGRESSION to legislate for a lawless people. They were sentenced to captivity and death at Mount Sinai: the TRANSGRESSION was musical worship but not of Jehovah.

The "serpent" is defined as a Musical Enchanter. Music appears in the case of Laban and Jacob. Remember that Laban got Jacob so drunk that he didn't know the name of the woman he went to bed with. Later, when Jacob fled and Laban caught up he said:

Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp? Ge.31:27

Yes, DRUNK and without his God-given family and property. This was consistent with Laban's statement:

And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy fathers house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? Gen 31:30

THERE IS NO "MUSIC" NOT CONNECTED TO IDOLATRY OR PUNISHMENT FOR IDOLATRY.

See how Ben Sirach in Ecclesiasticus shows that the KINGS and KINGDOM was to leave Israel without excuse as they finally went into captivity and death.

See especially the nature of TEMPLE WORSHIP.

The same music was fully developed in Babylon, Egypt, Greece, Rome and in Canaan. Solomon is supposed to have imported 10,000 instruments with the players which came along with one of his illegal wives. There was no MUSICAL WORSHIP except paganism prior to the MUSICAL IDOLATRY at Mount Sinai.

We can assume that Miriam was continuing the same musical dance learned and practiced in Egypt. After all, Israel did not offer sacrifices to God for the 400+ years they were in captivity. We noted above, that music in connection with worship was always considered idolatry.

When Paul told the churches how to SPEAK as a way to teach the Biblical text he excluded pagan, wine and instrument-induced singing which was abrading and destructive. While it feels good, like an injection of morphine, in the end it does more harm than good.

You cannot SPEAK and SING in the external sense at the same time.

You cannot make melody IN THE HEART with a HARP in there.

Those who violate their conscience and begin to worship with music find that, in time, they begin to enjoy it. It is enjoyable because the wide range of tones vibrates every nerve ending in the body. You don't hear with your ears but with the arms if the sound is loud enough. The harmony tranquilizes the left or rational half of the brain and does "an end run" around the rational filtering "gates" of the mind. As a result, you can drive in a Mac truck full of empty songs and sermons and the owl-eyed audience declares, "Wharen't that a good un? les get outta here and getta steak house fore the Baptis."

They don't fellowship because they have been frazzled and don't know why. Will it attract a bigger crowd. You betcha, Red Ryder. The evidence is that Jesus wouldn't be there but out on the hill side praying alone.

The Northwest College of the Bible seems to this writer to be teaching young evangelists what is not the Biblical facts.

Respectfully submitted by Kenneth Sublett who has no urgent motives to change whatever people do in worship. Rather, true worship is to honor Christ by honoring His word by searching it daily to see whether these things are so.
