Edward Fudge: But whoever believes in Jesus has remission of sins [without baptism]

Edward Fudge: The Bible does not contain the word "essential," since it is written in the language of story rather than of theology or debate.

Jesus said that those who "believeth not" or Apistos SHALL BE DAMNED.  The damned are those who claim that when Jesus said "the that believeth (complieth) AND is baptized SHALL BE saved.  That is defined as blasphemy by the Spirit OF Christ in Jeremiah 33.

A similar passage for those who do not depend on Scripture is:
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life:
        and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life;
        but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Believeth not always means
apeith-eō  A. [select] to be disobedient, refuse compliance, A.Ag.1049; opp. peithomai [pithou comply, 2. peithesthai tini listen to one, obey him, Il. 1.79,
This is proven by most translations:
John 3: 36  He who believes in the Son  has eternal life;
        but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life,
        but the wrath of God abides on him.

John 3:36ASV He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life;
        but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life,
        but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 3:36WEB One who believes in the Son has eternal life,
        but one who disobeys a the Son won’t see life,
        but the wrath of God remains on him.”

John 3:36NIV Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,
        but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”
This is a story which says that if you do NOT obey the command to be baptized you shall be DAMNED because the wrath of God remains on you. Apistos defines you as a traitor, treacherous and a marked enemy of Jesus who came to seek and save the lost easily sorted out by accepting the mark or seal of baptism
Acts 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
Acts 5:31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand
        to be a Prince and a Saviour,
        for to give repentance to Israel,
        and forgiveness of sins.
Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things;
        and so is also the Holy Ghost, [A holy spirit does not lie]
        whom God hath given to them that obey him.
Acts 5:33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.

Romans 16:26 But now is made manifest,
        and by the scriptures of the prophets,
        according to the commandment of the everlasting God,
        made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son,
        yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect,
        he became the author of eternal salvation
        unto all them that obey him;
Edward Fudge: The word "essential" is ambiguous, anyway, and capable of several meanings. Literally, it means that something is "of the essence" of something else.
Es·sen·tial: of the utmost importance : basic, indispensable, necessary <an essential requirement for admission to college.

Jesus said that Baptism was an essential requirement to become His Disciple.
Paul said that baptism was an essential requirement to be inducted into the Word or School of Christ.

Baptism is the ESSENTIAL means of the Gospel to be accepted into the School of Christ (not a worship center).
1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
        and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Gal. 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 (What I mean to say is) as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel,

        that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
        whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,

        even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other:
        for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
But, Edward said that it is not essential: just a story.

Edward Fudge: Surely all Christians can agree that baptism relates to the essence [indispensable] of the gospel,
        for it points to and expresses trust in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
        which alone can wash away our sin.

Jesus said that he washes away our sins WHEN we obey baptism as HIS CHOSEN instrumental means.

JESUS INFORMED PAUL THAT THIS IS UTTERLY FALSE;
Acts 22:13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me,
        Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
Acts 22:14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee,
        that thou shouldest know his will,
        and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
Acts 22:15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou?
        arise, and be baptized,
        and wash away thy sins,
        calling on the name of the Lord.
The only time and place to "call upon the name of the Lord is at baptism because Jesus told me so.
Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek:
        for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
         and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
        and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent?
        as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
         and bring glad tidings of good things!
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
        For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
THE FOUNDATIONAL TEACHINGS OF THE PROPHECIES BY CHRIST

There are TWO THREADS running through the New Testament:

The first is the foundational and absolute teaching of the Spirit OF Christ as made more certain by Jesus of Nazareth.
        The Prophets and Apostles are those upon whom the church is built or educated.
        Baptism is the God-chosen way for people to REQUEST salvation.
        On the other hand, The concept of faith only DEMANDS salvation based on their power to believe.
The use of secondary statements by Paul can never be used as the foundational doctrine to deny that the Spirit of Christ, Jesus of Nazareth or any of the "necessity" statements about baptism are utterly false.  This does, in fact, deny or refuses to confess that the name (singular) of Jesus Christ is the only source of authority: other unclear statements can never violate His authority.
The second consists of claimed "faith only" statements by Paul.
        Paul defends the foundational teachings about baptism AND his "faith" passages are exclusively devoted to denying the Jew's claim that people must be "justified" or declared ceremonially clean before they can be baptized for the actual remission of sins.

Paul uses many terms to contrast THE FAITH versus LAW, or SPIRIT versus FLESH, or SPIRIT versus LETTER.  People make a terrible mistake by claiming that Obedience to The Faith of Jesus Christ is the same as keeping the Law of Moses. The motive is to reject any human involvement or responsibility for their own actions.  The term "believeth not" defines those who reject even God as having any right to command.

The creation story in Genesis defines God bringing Light (happiness, knowledge) to dispel the darkness (ignorance,evil) by the purifying use of water.

JESUS MAKES THIS PROPHECY MORE CERTAIN

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;
but he that
believeth not shall be damned.

Believeth is Pistis which includes COMPLIETH with what you claim to trust.
Believeth not is Apistos which means "I will not comply." It marks those in Revolt and Treacherous.

The Prophecy of the Spirit of Christ in Malachi 4

Mark looks back to the GOSPEL prophesied by Malachi and forward to "THE" faith or the Christian system.

As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy WAY before thee. Mark 1:2

The voice (shouting) of one crying in the wilderness (a very lonely place), Prepare ye the WAY of the Lord, make his paths straight (level at once). Mark 1:3

Mark then reveals the most important principle of the gospel for those who are not Jesus the Christ.

John DID baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance FOR the remission of sins. Mark 1:4

This was the MARK of the presence of God in the flesh. Many Jews saw this baptizer as a SIGN of Messiah:

And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. Mark 1:5

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John 1:25

John explains his role to make known the Messiah. The passage noted is:

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

To understand Malachi it is important to look where Mark points to prove that Baptism was prophesied.

BEHOLD, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the WAY before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. Malachi 3:1

But who may abide (comprehend or receive) the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a REFINER'S FIRE, and like FULLER'S SOAP: Malachi 3:2 (To Wash)

The refiner's fire made silver and gold to become a water vessel pure enough to enter into the temple. Our spirit is the temple of God. Fuller's Soap makes Crimson garments as white as snow.

THE WASHING PROCESS BY JESUS CHRIST WAS PROPHESIED TO BE:

Kabac (h3526) kaw-bas, to trample; hence to wash (prop. by stamping with the feet)... WASHING. The Greek Louo (g3068) means to bathe the whole person.

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Re.1:5

EDWARD FUDGE DENIES THAT THE PROPHECY OF CHRIST AND COMMAND OF JESUS ARE ESSENTIAL

Edward Fudge: However, someone might use "essential" as a synonym for "necessary," in which case we must ask, "Necessary for whom?" Surely baptism is "necessary" (not a take-it-or-leave-it affair) for the believer, for Jesus commanded it.
        But to say that it is "necessary" for God would be to make the command greater than the God who gave it,
                to deny something which Scripture clearly affirms
                (that is, that God has saved many people throughout the world's history who were never baptized),
                and to say something the Bible never suggests or implies.

He must mean that If God made FAITH necessary then by this logic FAITH is greater than God.
  1. There is no record of anyone receiving entrance into the spiritual kingdom of God without baptism:
  2. both Jesus and the apostles taught the gospel OF the kingdom.
  3. The kingdom of God as the reign of Jesus Christ began on the day of Pentecost.
  4. Those who were baptized  had the remission of sins (their sins wash away).
  5. Only those who believed AND were baptized received A holy spirit of A good conscience:
    this gave them the key to the kingdom with a co-perception of the Word of God.
  6. Only those so baptized are called believers and weree added to the Church by Jesus.
  7. Only those baptized disciples of Christ are called Christians.
  8. Only they have their spirits translated into a heavenly or spiritual kingdom beyond the reach of clergy.
  9. Only they are said to be saved by being CLOTHED with Christ.
    That is the wedding garment.
Saved in the Christian sense means that one becomes a Disciple of Christ where the Word (only) of Christ (only) is the resource. The ACTIONS of a disciple are never called a "worship ritual" but A School of Christ.

We have no brain cells to allow us to know how those outside of the influence of the Synagogue--Ekklesia how God treats those who never received the trainining of a church family.

God has His Right and Will: HIS NEW TESTAMENT DEFINES SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

The only Spiritual Covenant was made by God in Christ to Abraham
It was "made more certain" by Jesus whom God made to be both Lord and Christ.

Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death,
        for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament,
        they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is,
        there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

Hebrews 9:17 For a testament is of force after men are dead:
        otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

Hebrews 9:18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

No one doubts God's Right to save any way one wishes although Edward Fudge says that if we had to OBEY a command of God to be saved that command would be GREATER than God! The LAST important part of the Will of Jesus Christ was that He that Believes AND is baptized shall be saved: that went into effect after Jesus returned on the day of Pentecost.

UNCLE JIMMY DIES: EDWARD FUDGE GETS HIS PART BY BELIEVING THAT UNCLE JIMMY DIED.

Hebrews 9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying,
        that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest,
        while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
Hebrews 9:9 Which was a figure for the time then present,
        in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices,
        that could not make him that did the service perfect,
        as pertaining to the conscience;
Hebrews 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings,
         and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.
By accepting the sacrifice and entering the Laver one is sanctified and able to enter into the holy places. Obviously something similar must answer to the PATTERN and Faith only does not do that:
Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come,
        by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves,
        but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place,
        having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
        sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ,
        who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
        PURGE YOUR  conscience from dead works
        to serve the living God?

THE FOUNDATIONAL MESSAGE GIVEN TO PAUL TO CARRY OUT THE PROPHESIED MISSION TO THE GENTILES
Acts 9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus:
            and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:
Acts 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him,
         Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord?
        And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:
        it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said,
        Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?
        And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city,
        and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

Jesus did NOT say: Just believe.  Paul MUST do something to obey that form and, like Jesus, be pronounced a son only after baptism.

Edward Fudge says that if Paul had to obey a command THAT would make him greater than God Who gave the command. Because, he says, God can save in other ways.

Acts 9:15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me,

Jesus said that His Words were Spirit and Life.  Therefore,
        Being filled with the Holy Spirit is the same as

shouldest know his will

Hebrews 5:9 And being made perfect,
        he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Paul risked his freedom and life to go to Jerusalem and tell them about how one could REALLY be freed from sins: then as now this created murderous opposition.

Acts 22:15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

Paul had heard himself being commanded to be baptism.  He was to tell the Jews about that event.  He told the Jews that calling on the Name of the Lord in being baptism WASHED AWAY THY SINS.  Edward Fudge says this is not true:

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou?
        arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins,
        calling on the name of the Lord.

Essential in the Bible speaks of 'substantial or real."

Jesus said that those who believeth not or the APISTOS or those who will NOT COMPLY shall be damned:  that sounds pretty essential to men.

Being born of spirit and water is always defined as baptism: Jesus equated converted and birth as ESSENTIAL to seeing or entering the kingdom. No one enters the kingdom except that Christ adds those being saved.

Luke made certain that we cannot be LED ASTRAY by equating baptism and conversion.

PAUL CONFIRMED THAT BAPTISM IS CONVERSION WHICH IS ESSENTIAL TO RECEIVING A HOLY SPIRIT OR A GOOD CONSCIENCE.
2Cor. 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face,
        that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:

2Cor. 3:14 But
their minds were blinded:
        for until this day remaineth
        the same vail untaken away
        in the reading of the old testament;
        which vail is done away in Christ.

2Cor. 3:15 But even unto this day,

        when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.

2Cor. 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall
turn to the Lord, [Baptism]
        the vail shall be taken away.  [Receiving A holy spirit]
Jesus used the example of being CONVERTED and BORN AGAIN like a child
Luke recorded the example of BAPTISM to be SAVED and CONVERTED meaning the same thing.

If you think that the Spirit OF Christ is a free lance teacher beyond the sacred pages then you clearly have NOT accepted the foundational meaning of Baptism as a pride-deflating way to ASK for the free gift of remission of sins. You might better think that your faith EARNS.
2Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord IS that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2Cor. 3:18 But we all,

PAUL NEVER SAID THAT ABRAHAM WAS SAVED BY FAITH ONLY.

It is ESSENTIAL to becoming a servant of Christ to OBEY His condition.  I suppose that if Jesus has the power to command ANYTHING essential then that command is GREATER than Jesus.  Paul warned against strong delusions.

Obedience is ESSENTIAL

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death,
        or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
         but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin,
        ye became the servants of righteousness.

Edward Fudge says: Paul, you are mistaken.

1Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,
        that he might bring us to God,
        being put to death in the flesh,
        but quickened by the Spirit: [his]
1Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
1Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,
        while the ark was a preparing,
        wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us
        (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,
        but the request for a good conscience toward God,)
        by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
1Peter 3:22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God;
        angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Edward Fudge: Faith and baptism do not belong in a list of like-and-equal things.

They are not supposed to be the same: Faith gives us the power but baptism frees us from sin BECAUSE the Bible tells me so.

Peanut butter and jelly are not equal, but if you want a peanut butter and jelly sandwsich you MUST use both.  Repent and be baptized are different but the word KAI absolutely demands that you obey the natural sequence or you WILL BE DAMNED.  That is what Jesus said.

CHRIST ALSO SPOKE OF THE DAY OF PENTECOST:

Notice the two GROUPS which is always the meaning of PREDESTINATED purpose.

Salvation is Yeshuwah! God chooses those who DO NOT repudiate Him by THEIR OWN SINS.

to him whom the

Ezek XVIIIWEB
. The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying, [2] What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? [3] As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not have [occasion] any more to use this proverb in Israel. [4] Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins, he shall die. [5] But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right, [6] and has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor's wife, neither has come near to a woman in her impurity, [7]  and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; [8]  he who has not given forth on interest, neither has taken any increase, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man, [9]  has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh.

The tiny remnant for Elijah were those who had not bowed to Baal

Edward Fudge: They are not of the same "order" and ought not be lined up in a row as if they were.
Faith is the foundation and baptism is part of the superstructure.
Faith is the soul and baptism is part of the body.
Faith is the root and baptism is some of the fruit.
The Greek word KAI is cumulative.  He that believeth AND is baptized SHALL BE saved.
Those who had obeyed that "pattern capable of being imitated" where THEN free from sin.
Cyril of Jerusalem

"Since man is of a twofold nature, composed of body and soul, the purification also is twofold: the corporeal for the corporeal and the incorporeal for the incorporeal. The water cleanses the body, and the Spirit seals the soul. . . . When you go down into the water, then, regard not simply the water, but look for salvation through the power of the Spirit. For without both you cannot attain to perfection. It is not I who says this, but the Lord Jesus Christ, who has the power in this matter. And he says, ‘Unless a man be born again,’ and he adds the words ‘of water and of the Spirit,’ ‘he
cannot enter the kingdom of God.’ He that is baptized with water, but is not found worthy of the Spirit, does not receive the grace in perfection. Nor, if a man be virtuous in his deeds, but does not receive the seal by means of the water, shall he enter the kingdom of heaven. A bold saying, but not mine; for it is Jesus who has declared it" (Catechetical Lectures 3:4 [A.D. 350]).
A BELIEVER IN THE SAVED SENSE IS ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE OBEYED A DIRECT COMMAND.
Rom. 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
          For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Edward Fudge: To equate faith and baptism is like saying that in order to live one must breathe and use clean silverware, or that life depends on having a constant heartbeat and regularly brushing the teeth.

The parable is that one must receive
A new, holy spirit AND one must feed on the Word (only) of Christ (only) in the prophets and apostles.

THAT REFUTES JESUS CHRIS
T: he that wants to SAVE his teeth SHALL brush his teeth.

Edward Fudge: One had as well insist that wedded love requires a mutual commitment and a ceremony in a chapel. There is a difference between the inward reality and the outward formality, between the life principle and the structures which give it shape and expression. To clearly state that difference does not take anything away from the beauty, the function or the desirability of the forms and symbols and expressions in any of these analogies.

Anti (g473) an-tee'; a prim. particle; opposite, i.e. INSTEAD or because of (rarely in addition to): - for, in the room of. Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital, SUBSTITUTION, correspondence, etc.

  1. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to build an Ark or drown
  2. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to cross the Red Sea or be destroyed by FAITH ONLY when God said "Quit whining, lift up your arm and MOVE into the jaws of death.
  3. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to be pinned on a stake and shed OUR blood.

When you have to EXPLAIN AWAY what the text MAKES CLEAR you may have exhausted God's Grace.

Tupos (g5179) too'-pos; from 5180; a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. a statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler ("type"), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning): - en- (ex-) ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.

Maybe YOU can be SAVED without the REMISSION OF SINS (connected only to baptism) but I DON'T THINK you can go into the Most Holy Place wearing DIRTY CLOTHES.  Paul says we are saved BY FAITH when we are BAPTIZED to be CLOTHED with Christ. Then we have A holy spirit translated into heaven WHEN we are added to the CHURCH which is AFTER we have been baptized.

Edward Fudge: Saving "faith" is not something we do in a series of events.
        It is what motivates and enables everything that we do in response to God's kindness.
        Saving faith means trusting Jesus' atonement as sufficient to bridge the gap our sins have caused between us and God,
                and entrusting ourselves to God to be his people
                out of gratitude for what he did for us in Jesus Christ
                long before we were even born.
Men like Martin Luther and Thomas Campbell said that "faith must have an object."  Luther said that we are saved by SOLA FIDA.  And since faith comes only from Scripture we are saved by SOLA SCRIPTURA.  And because faith demands that we be BAPTIZED, salvation rests in SOLA BAPTISMA.

A person who denounces Jesus who made baptism or obedience of Him absolutely DOES NOT TRUST him but instead TRUSTS their own human power to believe something. A person who believes that his house is crumbling and trusts that as true, BUT refused to move is just simply  stupid and deserves to die.

"As many as are persuaded and believe that what we [Christians] teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, and instructed to pray and to entreat God with fasting, for the remission of their sins that are past, we pray and fast with them. Then they are brought by us where there is water and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father . . . and of our Savior Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit [Matt. 28:19], they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, ‘Unless you are born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’ [John 3:3]" (Justin Martyr,First Apology 61 [A.D. 151]).

Irenaeus

"‘And [Naaman] dipped himself . . . seven times in the Jordan’ [2 Kgs. 5:14]. It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [this served] as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions, being spiritually regenerated as newborn babes, even as the Lord has declared: ‘Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven’" (Fragment 34 [A.D. 190]).
Believing that Jesus is that prophesied Christ who would purge us of our sins by washing, was a REQUIRED STEP which qualified the enuch to be baptised.  His belief OR confession had no value until He obeyed.
Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture,
        and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:35

When he preached
JESUS the enuch wanted to be baptized. Isn't that amazing?

And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water:
        and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:36

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.
        And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 8:37

And he commanded the chariot to stand still:
        and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Acts 8:38

And when they were come up out of the water,
        the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip,
        that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Acts 8:39
We don't DO them in a series of steps: faith is that which ENABLES one to act on what that person believes. You cannot step on a rock in the middle of a deep stream UNLESS you believe that the Rock will save you. Romans 10 includes those steps: Calling on the name of the Lord IS what happens only in baptism.
Hebrews 11:6 But without faith
        it is impossible to please him:
        for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
        and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

AN EXAMPLE TO SHOW WHAT EVERYONE WOULD UNDERSTAND DURING PAUL'S TIME
Before trying to explain away the historic understanding of Scripture, it will help to understand the meaning of "believeth not" or Apistos AND look at examples of the words:

A. pepisteukein Act.Ap.14.23 : ( [pistis] ) :--trust, put faith in, rely on a person, thing,
        or statement, tini Hdt.1.24 ; tôi logôi Id.2.118 ,
Examples: Herodotus 1.XXIVThey say that this Arion, who spent most of his time with Periander,
     wished to sail to Italy and Sicily, and that after he had made a lot of money there
     he wanted to come back to Corinth.

A . Trusting none more than the Corinthians, pisteuonta
B.  he hired a Corinthian vessel to carry him from Tarentum.

Faith or trust means to
COMPLY which is the opposite of NOT Comply--Apistis

2. comply, OPPOSITE to APISTEO
A. [7] Periander, [apistiês] skeptical,
B. kept him in confinement
, letting him go nowhere, and waited for the sailors.

Those who COMPLY NOT Apist-eô I. disbelieve, distrust, was distrusted, i.e. no one could be sure of knowing,

II. = apeitheô, disobey, to be DISOBEDIENT, they refuse to comply, They are not to be trusted, and so of persons and their acts, not trusty, faithless, Act., mistrustful, incredulous, suspicious, Treacherously, cause to REVOLT from. also kleptô meaning: seize or occupy secretly, effect or bring about clandestinely, gamon, to be 'smuggled in' get rid of imperceptibly

ANOTHER EXAMPLE FOR THOSE WHO CARE WHAT JESUS SAID
On way to determine the meaning of Mark 16 is to find an identical "formulation" in the Greek texts.

[941c] and this the lawgiver, as it behoves him, knows better than the whole tribe [symphony] of poets.

He, therefore, that hearkens to our speech [Logos]

Holden means that you are an ACTIVE warrior against God.

THE GOSPEL IS THE CONVERTING POWER:  However, those who OBEY NOT that Grace provision will be damned.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
        for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;
         to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
1Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness;
        but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Job 36:12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword,
        and they shall die without knowledge.
2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them
         that know not God,
        and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
2Thessalonians 3:14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle,
        note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
        and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Edward Fudge: Baptism is one way -- indeed, the initial way, commanded by Jesus himself --
        for expressing that heart of trust/faith/commitment.
        It manifests repentance,
        embodies a submissive spirit and steps across the line separating believers from unbelievers
                    in the eyes of a watching world.

Phillip baptized the enuch without a WATCHING WORLD.

However, Jesus fulfilling the direct command in the prophets said:
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
        All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore,
        and teach all nations,
         baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
        and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Obeying the command of Jesus DOES NOT make the command GREATER THAN Jesus

Of those who already believed and asked what they could do Peter said;
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, [those who asked]
        Repent, and be baptized every one of you
        in the name of Jesus Christ
        for the remission of sins,
        and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Edward Fudge says that's a lie. He says that one has remission of Sins BEFORE confessing the name of Jesus Christ and BEFORE they their "sins were washed away" giving THEM A holy spirit.
Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
        Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word
        were baptized: and the same day
        there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

They were not ADDED to the church BEFORE they were baptized.

They obviously saved themselves FROM the crooked race (skolion singers) and were only ADDED after they were  baptism.

Those who had saved themselves or removed themselves from the crooked race, were added to the assembly.
Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple,
        and breaking bread from house to house,
        did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship,
and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
        And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
If the Apostles COMMANDED the Doctrine they received from Jesus doesn't that make the Apostles greater than Jesus. No! Silly.

Edward Fudges says that Christ SAVED them the instant they believed: before they knew that they were lost: before the asked what to do: before repenting, confessing the name of Jesus and before receiving a purified spirit.

Edward Fudge:  It signifies our union with Jesus -- and with all those people whom he saves.

Paul speaking by Christ the Spirit says that baptism CLOTHES or or unites us into His Holy Garments. Paul said that it in fact UNITES us with Christ
Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ
        were baptized into his death? [This is the only INSTRUMENTAL MEANS of union]
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
        that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
        even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
        we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Romans 6:6 Knowing this,
        that our old man is crucified with him
,
        that the body of sin might be destroyed, t
        hat henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Romans 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ,
        we believe that we shall also live with him:

The Scripture is loaded with various forms of parallelism: the second part is FOR which mean "what I mean to say" is.   If you quote partial verses it means you intend to deceive.
Gal. 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 (What I mean to say is) as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

You are not unioned with Christ until you have been baptism. It is certainly the only SEAL (visible) that we have obeyed Christ.

Not: We are saved BY faith "only." That PROVES that you do not have A holy spirit or A good conscience or consciousness which means a CO-perception, to be informed of. Paul told the Jews they would not be able to read or hear the Old Testament until they turned or converted to Christ.  Jesus equated converted to baptism and Luke recorded baptism to being converted.

Cic. Off. 1.39 13. Again, if under stress of circumstances individuals have made any promise to the enemy,
            they are bound to keep their word even then.
For instance,
in the First Punic War, when Regulus was taken prisoner by the Carthaginians, he was sent to Rome on parole to negotiate an exchange of prisoners;
Paul said that the work of Jesus was a FORM or TYPE.  This was a pattern capable of being imitated.  When they obeyed a FORM or ANTI-tupos of that teaching they were only THEN FREE FROM SIN. Edward says that is is only a sign because he rejects the idea that we obey a FORM of that SIGN without which were are still in our sins.

Edward Fudge: It reminds us who we are and whose we are. It constantly calls us to the new and holy life to which God has called us in Jesus.

Peter got HIS message from Jesus and HE commanded
Repent AND be baptized FOR (in order to) Remission of Sins.

Edward Fudge:Much of the evangelical church has made too little of this Christ-given ordinance, in a mad rush away from an unbiblical sacramentalism which made too little of faith. Where modern Christians utilize "the sinner's prayer," the apostolic church commanded believers to be baptized. The New Testament does not envision an unbaptized believer,

but no New Testament author ever suggests
        that a true believer is saved because she or he was baptized,
        or that baptism saves anyone apart from faith.

No one in churches of Christ are sacramentalists which means that the ACT of baptism saves even if you do not believe.
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
        but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the
gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Paul said that only after obedience in baptism is one FREE FROM SIN.  Edward suggests that one is SAVED while still in their sins.

Edward Fudge: God does not send us to baptize, but to preach the Good News. Those who believe the Good News are to be baptized. When the evangelical church learns to grip both those statements and hold them tight, it will take a giant step forward -- not only in biblical understanding but in practical Christian unity as well.

Edward Refutes Jesus Christ: you preach the gospel to produce faith: you baptize them to make them literate disciples.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
        All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
        baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
        and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
People CANNOT be taught to either READ or HEAR the Word of God until they are converted (2 Cor 3). This conversion is the same as baptism. People who work so hard to deny the clear text are PROOFS that people really cannot read BLACK text on BROWN paper.

WHY PAUL, LIKE JESUS, BAPTIZED BUT NOT OFTEN PERSONALLY

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said,
        Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest,
        hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
Acts 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet:
        for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose,
         to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen,
        and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
If that is a FACT then Paul disobeyed Jesus Christ as Holy Spirit.

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomachs sake and thine often infirmities. 1 Timothy 5:23

Well, we know that if Timothy quit drinking water and only "took" a little wine for his stomach, he would soon die. The RSV and other versions translate this:

No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. 1 Timothy 5:23RSV

From this we know that Timothy had taken the radically-different step to exclude wine from his environment. That is, he was a teetotlar in the sense of being a priest. Paul made it clear that the product of the vine was not inherently polluted.

So, instead of saying, "give up water totally and use a bit of wine," Paul really said, "put a small quantity of stomach wine into your water." This was typically 20 parts of water and one part wine. By the neglect of common sense we can have Paul saying, "I want you to sin a lot so that you can get a lot of grace."

If Timothy had a degree in Lexical-syntactical analysis he might tell titus: "Paul sent me not to drink water."

Why was it important that Paul not personally baptize people? Remember, that Paul had taught and practiced Christian baptism in Corinth. Therefore, he reaches this conclusion only after seeing the partisan spirit in Corinth: "Why, I was personally baptized by the apostle Paul and you were only baptized by John the Tanner."

Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:12
        Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you
? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 1:13
I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 1 Corinthians 1:14
        Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name
. 1 Corinthians 1:15

Why did Paul not often baptize: LEST you think that it is MY Name.  Isn't that too simple?

Could Paul be saying: "I think God that I did baptize Crispus and Gaius?" I think so as we will see later.

You see, Paul makes it clear to us, that the master teacher must personally baptize you into his own name. However, Paul was not the Master.

Edward Fudge: One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism

Edward Fudge: You are certainly right that Ephesians 4:5 names "faith" and "baptism" together in a "list," if you please. Paul also names "one Lord" in this "list," which underscores my original point that these are not "like-and-equal things." Paul is emphasizing the commonality of Christian experience, for we all share in "one Lord, one faith, one baptism." This is a poetic verse in the original Greek, and the English word "one" appears in its masculine (heis), feminine (mia) and neuter (hen) forms to modify first "Lord" (kyrios - masculine), then "faith" (pistis - feminine) and finally "baptism" (baptisma - neuter).
Eph. 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Titus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
Titus 2:12 Teaching us that,
        denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,

This is exactly what Paul said to the Romans whose faith meant that they obeyed the pattern.

Know ye not, that so many of us
..........as were
baptized into Jesus Christ
..........were baptized into his death? Rom 6:3

No one is said to have sins remitted other than when they OBEY that form or pattern which can be IMITATED.
Edward Fudge: All three of these "ones" relate to remission of sins. The one LORD shed his blood "
for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:28). That is the objective reality, whether anyone believes it or not.

He got the right to define how that world-redemption would be bestowed on individuals.

But whoever believes in Jesus (the one FAITH), according to all the prophets, "has remission of sins"
(Acts 10:43). That is the subjective appropriation of the blessing objectively accomplished by the "one Lord."
And, according to Jesus' own commandment and design,

I'm not sure where Edward got that statement.  Here is what Paul really said.
Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness,
        that through his name
        whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

See the difference. By being baptized INTO Christ we are CLOTHED with Him. The redemption of sins is only for
those who have let Him put on the wedding garment and make one a member of HIS Church which is HIS Body.
Matthew 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests,
        he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
Matthew 22:12 And he saith unto him,
        Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?
        And he was speechless.
Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants,
        Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness;
        there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Peter was sent to tell Cornelius WORDS by  which he should be saved
Peter connects this event to Pentecost where he commanded already "certified" Jews to be baptized
God showed Peter that the ORIGINAL command was to preach to all nations.
Peter commanded them to BE BAPTIZED which is never a WITNESS but the instrumental means ordained by Jesus Christ.

The falling or
AER sound was figuratively the BREATH of God and not another people.

Christ commanded baptism when defining the future REST.
Jeremiah 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
        that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jeremiah 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers
         in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt;
         which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jeremiah 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel;
        After those days, saith the LORD,
        I will put my law in their inward parts, [A holy spirit, A good conscience]
        and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour,
        and every man his brother, saying,
        Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD;
        for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Jeremiah 31:35 Thus saith the LORD,
        which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night,
        which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name:
Jeremiah 31:36 If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever.

Most Will not come to the light that they might be saved.
People who fight baptism have a really bad unresolved conflict so that they deny all clear statements about judgment.

John 3:19 And this is the
condemnation, that light is come into the world,
        and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light,
        neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light,
        that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
John 3:22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea;
        and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

2Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this
world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not,
        lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
2Corinthians 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness,
        hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that
pardoneth iniquity,
        and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage?
         he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us;
        he will subdue our iniquities;
        and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Micah 7:20 Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham,
        which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.
Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
Edward Fudge:whoever has the one FAITH in the one LORD
is to express and declare it in the one BAPTISM.
        When one does that as an expression of faith,
        baptism also is said to be "for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38).

THAT'S NOT THE TRUTH. Baptism is the ONLY response to faith.
But whoever believes in Jesus (the one FAITH), according to all the prophets, "has remission of sins"
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
        Repent, and be baptized every one of you
        in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
        and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For is EIS and never means 'BECAUSE OF."  It means into or in order that your sins be remitted.  Converted has the same meaning as Baptism: returning to our prenatal state of innocense:
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore,
        and be converted,
        that your sins may be blotted out,
        when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Edward Fudge says that people have their sins remitted when they believe BEFORE they are converted.
Acts 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people,
        and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

The only way to go through his name is defined by Jesus to Paul

Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized

        Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

The command to be baptized was the purpose of preaching the gospel to dispel the notion of a "direct operation."

Acts 10:33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

Edward Fudge: So these beautiful realities are intertwined, yet distinct. The Lord calls for our response of faith, and faith cries out for expression and embodiment in baptism.
Baptism has meaning because it expresses trust, and trust or faith is meaningful because it looks to Jesus the one Lord. Every baptized believer shares all these things in common. "Be diligent," then, Paul admonishes, "to preserve in bonds of peace the unity which the Spirit gives" (Ephesians 4:3). Whenever Christians disavow other believers, or deny their brotherhood together in the Lord, they deny the unity which the Spirit has given and they grieve the Holy Spirit who makes us one.
Jesus certified the FOUNDATIONAL TEACHING through the Apostles.  If they failed to speak that which is written they would allow false teachers to take over.  The PURPOSE was not to unity every one.

Edward Fudge: I am saying that Acts 2:38 speaks of baptism "for the remission of sins" and that Acts 10:43 promises that whoever believes in Jesus "has remission of sins."

And what I am saying is that is utterly false because it a half truth.  The passage on the "sacred page" reads:

Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness,
        that through his name
        [1] whosoever believeth in him
        [2] shall receive remission of sins.

Only in baptism do we call on the name (singular) of the Lord requesting A holy spirit or A good conscience.

Here is the inability to read BLACK text on BROWN paper. Edward forgot "through His Name." The NAME (singular) of father, son and spirit is Jesus Christ.  His name or AUTHORITY is "he that believeth AND is baptized SHALL BE saved."  You cannot bad mouth baptism without denying the authority of Jesus.

        I am saying that God saves all believers,
        and that Jesus commands all believers to be baptized.

THAT'S LYING TO GOD AND ABOUT GOD: refusing to be baptized fails to justify God which means "I do not believe what you are saying."
Luke 7:29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans,
        justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John
.
Luke 7:30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves,
        being not baptized of him.
[hypocrites, speakers, singers, instrument players]

John 12:36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.

         These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
John 12:37 But though he had done so many miracles before them,
        yet they believed not on him:
John 12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake,
        Lord, who hath believed our report?
        and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
John 12:39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
John 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart;
        that they should not see with their eyes,
        nor understand with their heart,
        and be converted, [baptized]
        and I should heal them. [A holy spirit]
John 12:41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
John 12:42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also
        many believed on him;
        but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him,
        lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
John 12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
John 12:44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.
John 12:45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words,
        and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
        hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
John 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself;
        but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
John 12:50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting:
        whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
There is NO LIFE without obeying the command to be baptized FOR remission of sins.

Edward Fudge: I am also saying that most of the arguments between Christians concerning baptism and salvation arise because of our unscriptural formulations about "God's part" and "our part," and because of unbiblical expressions such as baptism being "essential" and "necessary" for salvation -- or being "non-essential" and "unnecessary" in general.

I am saying that we contradict the Word of God if we treat baptism as a take-it-or-leave-it affair, or fail to baptize believers,         or to instruct them to be baptized
        as their faith-response to the gospel.

After Peter says that BAPTISM SAVES because we call on the name to REQUEST A good conscience or A holy spirit. In chapter 4 he says:

1Peter 4:5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
1Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead,
        that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
1Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

1Peter 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a
Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

A Christian is
ONLY A disciple of Christ: a disciple observes WHAT Jesus commanded to be taught.  Jesus demanded that those who deny that "he that believeth AND is baptized SHALL BE saved" are believeth-nots or Apistos: treacherous people in REVOLT.

1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the
house of God: [Christ adds the baptized to HIS Church]
         and if it first begin at us,
         what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
1Peter 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
        where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

The House of God is the Church of God in Christ

1Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how

         thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God,
        which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Hebrews 10:21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

Only those who were saved by obeying in baptism were added to the Church by Jesus Christ.

Those who reject baptism OBEY NOT the gospel: they are ungodly sinners.

Edward Fudge: Such carelessness ignores a command of Jesus Christ himself, betrays a sloppy attitude toward obedience, and reflects a lack of appreciation for the important role the New Testament assigns to water baptism in light of the gospel.

The only commands of Jesus made baptism ESSENTIAL
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;
        but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Believeth not is Apistos which says "I do NOT have to comply" with the the ESSENTIAL that Faith demands Baptism.

I am also saying that we contradict the Word of God
        if we deny that God will save all who truly put their trust in him, [Pistis, trust demands COMPLIANCE]
        based on the finished work of Jesus Christ for sinners.
                Such a denial is is unbiblical, wrong and contrary to the gospel,
                and we should learn better, repent of it, and resolve with God's help not to do it any more.
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. James 2:17
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works,
        and I will shew thee my faith by my works. James 2:18

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well:
        the devils also believe, and tremble. James 2:19

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? James 2:20
Was not Abraham our father justified by works,
        when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? James 2:21

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works,
         and by works was faith made perfect? James 2:22

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith,
        Abraham believed God
, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness:
         and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. James 2:24
James had read Genesis:
Genesis 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee;
        for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries,
        and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
Genesis 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven,
        and will give unto thy seed all these countries;
        and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Genesis 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws.
I am saying that if we go out preaching baptism, we might find ourselves persuading people to get in the water who haven't the foggiest idea about trusting Jesus Christ alone for their right standing with God. However, if we focus on preaching Jesus, the Holy Spirit will motivate believers to be baptized.

The father of "faith only" says that God does two supernatural operations: He gave us the Scriptures and He sent out evangelists to preach it: faith comes through preaching.

No one before this end-time (hope) ever made such a Christ insulting statement: People who said "baptism does not save" always appended "without faith." No one denied the clear statement of truth but denied that baptism as in sprinkling an infant saved because the infant could not believe.

ALEXANDER SAID THAT JOHN CALVIN COULD BE A CAMPBELLITE.

"4. I know the common opinion is, that remission of sins, which at our first regeneration we receive by baptism alone, is afterwards obtained by repentance and the benefit of the keys. But the advocates of this opinion have fallen into an error, for want of considering that the power of the keys of which they speak, is so dependent on baptism that it cannot by any means be separated from it.

And as the scion derives substance and nourishment from the root on which it is engrafted,
        so they who receive baptism with the faith with which they ought to receive it,
        truly experience the efficacy of Christ's death in the mortification of the flesh,
        and also the energy of his resurrection in the vivification of the Spirit.

He uses the same argument in another place--that we are circumcised, putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, after we have been buried with Christ in baptism; and in this sense, in the passage already quoted, he calls it the washing of regeneration and renewing.
        Thus we are promised, first, the gratuitous remission of sins and imputation of righteousness;
         and, secondly, the grace of the Holy Spirit to reform us to newness of life."

Now let me ask the candid reader of this essay from the pen of John Calvin himself, how much more orthodox than ourselves was this celebrated reformer? We have heard him explain himself fully on these great items, and may we not say that the chief difference between him and us, is, that we practise what we teach. "There is," says the reformer Calvin, "one other advantage received from baptism--this is the certain testimony it affords us that we are not only [546] engrafted into the life and death of Christ, but are so united as to be partakers of all his benefits"--"All the gifts of God which are presented in baptism, are found in Christ alone."

We leave it to the good sense of the reader, whether John Calvin ought not to be called a Campbellite as well as the Apostle Peter.
