Baptism, An Exploration: Titus 3 — “Not because of works”

The current series on baptism, "Baptism, An Exploration," seeks to answer just that question. The key to the study, I believe, is to commit to accept the scriptures' teachings for what they say, in context.

The fact is that the scriptures repeatedly and emphatically state that ALL with faith in Jesus ("faith" being used in Paul's or John's sense) will be saved. There are dozens and dozens of verses that say that.

But the baptism verses are there, too.

We can't reconcile the verses by reference to our traditions and preferences. Rather, we must find the solution in the scriptures themselves, by looking as deeply into what is being said as we can manage. Nor can we permit one set of passages overrule the other. So it's no easy task!

And so that's what the series is about.

First, Jay Guin and all of those presuming to teach the law when they can never speak the Word in context, does not understand that Justification or Righteousness is not same as regeneration or sanctificatio: See, they are even spelled differently. Nor do they understand that Pistis as FAITH or TRUST demands COMPLIANCE.

Here is the way Jesus Christ disposes of His propherty.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

[4] So he and the others turned their ships around and came to the fleet, but it was all over. The Athenians spread this rumor about them, but the Corinthians do not agree at all, and they consider themselves to have been among the foremost in the battle. Taking “washing” or “bath” in Titus 3:5 as a reference to baptism creates a theological problem for some, because Paul has just said — in the very same sentence — “he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness.” And to many, baptism is a work and therefore cannot be necessary to salvation.

Baptism is a WORK OF GOD: No one believes that they can WORK and save themselves.

Titus 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God
        our Saviour toward man appeared,
Titus 3:5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,

The work of Jesus was a TYPE or TUPOS. A Tupos is a PATTERN intended to be IMITATED.
ANTI- means "instead of." You can be IMITATE what Jesus did because he COMMANDED it or you can die for your own sins--lots of luck. Christ was the Spirit speaking through the prophets and HE said:

except an obstinate disinclination to offer sacrifices, he found in the religious services nothing but meetings at early morning for singing hymns to Christ and4 God, and sealing home their way of life by a united pledge to be faithful to their religion, forbidding murder, adultery, dishonesty, and other crimes.

We assemble to read our sacred writings, if any peculiarity of the times makes either forewarning or reminiscence needful.57 However it be in that respect, with the sacred words we nourish our faith,

The tried men of our elders preside over us, obtaining that honour not by purchase, but by established character. There is no buying and selling of any sort in the things of God. Though we have our treasure-chest, it is not made up of purchase-money, as of a religion that has its price. On the monthly day,58 if he likes, each puts in a small donation; but only if it be his pleasure, and only if he be able: for there is no compulsion; all is voluntary. These gifts are, as it were, piety's deposit fund. For they are not taken thence and spent on feasts, and drinking-bouts, and eating-houses, but to support and bury poor people,

2Corinthians 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face,

2Corinthians 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day
        remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament;
which vail is done away in Christ.
2Corinthians 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2Corinthians 3:16 Nevertheless

John 12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

We obey a PATTERN capable of being imitated: we OBEY THE GOSPEL and that makes us a BELIEVER.

Of course, Paul seems to think otherwise. This is the same apostle who wrote –

(Gal 3:25-27 ESV) 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Evidently Paul doesn’t read his own stuff, because he persists in associating baptism with salvation — and he does this smack dab in the middle of discussions denying that we are saved by works and forbidding any such teaching! So what on earth could he be thinking?

Quoted by Campbell:

Dr. James Macknight, formerly prolocutor or moderator of the Presbyterian church of Scotland, and translator of the Apostolic Epistles. One of his notes upon Titus 3:5, is in the following words:--"

Through the bath of regeneration." "Through baptism, called the bath of regeneration not because any change in nature" (but I would not say in the state) "of the baptized person is produced by baptism; but because it is an emblem of the purification of his soul from sin."

Emblem is the Charakotos branded, stamped of the internal
Well, he obviously doesn’t think baptism is a work. We have no chance of understanding the apostle until we accept that. We may never come to understand why, but it’s a brute fact that Paul doesn’t see baptism as a work.

Well, no Disciple of Christ ever believed that baptism was a WORK.  However, it is a command and a promise for anyone who wants to walk in the steps of Jesus and become a Disciple. I have always heard with no exception that baptism is a FORM of the Work done by Jesus Christ in His death, burial, enspiriting, resurrection and walking like a new man. People may blaspheme because they have made RACA words out of obey.

Maybe YOU can be SAVED without the REMISSION OF SINS (connected only to baptism) but I DON'T THINK you can go into the Most Holy Place wearing DIRTY CLOTHES.  Paul says we are saved BY FAITH when we are BAPTIZED to be CLOTHED with Christ. Then we have A holy spirit translated into heaven WHEN we are added to the CHURCH which is AFTER we have been baptized.

To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all,
........... and to the Spirits of just men made perfect, Heb 12:23

I realize that many Christians accept the idea that baptism is a work as a given, and many build a significant part of their theology on the idea. But it’s just not true. Gal 3:25-27 can’t be reconciled with that idea. After all, Paul is arguing urgently against a works salvation in Galatians. If he considered baptism a work, he’d never have made that statement. Nor would he have said,

Paul is arguing against THE LAW OF MOSES instead of THE FAITH OF CHRIST.

That's where human imagination will get you

(1Co 12:13 ESV) 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — Jews or Greeks, slaves or free — and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

This is the SPIRIT of Sonship: the One mental disposition. Therefore, you should not be divided. Paul NEVER speaks of SPIRIT as a trinity person.

(Rom 6:3 ESV) 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ
        were baptized into his death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

(Col 2:11-12 ESV) 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

Which means
:
12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.

Which means:
Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Paul closely knits our salvation with baptism over and over. What other “work” receives this treatment from Paul? If baptism is a mere ordinance, then why pick baptism as the ordinance so closely tied to our salvation?

We disciples don't use words like ordinance or sacrament: as children we just obey what we are commanded to do. Only those who have been saved by baptism at Pentecost were "added" to HisChurch by Christ.

1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
and if it first begin at us,
what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Clearly, even if baptism is an ordinance, it’s a very special one. Recall that Jesus said –

(Mat 28:19-1 ESV) 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

There are three things here
        You Go and teach.
        You Disciple believers by
Baptism to become a disciple of Christ
and then teach them the CENI.

Baptizing our converts is something before and other than “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”

Peter interpreted Jesus perfectly including NOT baptizing in the nameS of a trinity.
Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart,
and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,
Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ [singular] for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [your spirit becomes A holy spirit]

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word
        were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostlesdoctrine and fellowship,
and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. [ASV those that were saved.]

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Now, my point isn’t so much to argue for the necessity of baptism as to point out that baptism simply is not a work. And maybe getting a better handle on Paul’s theology of works will help us better understand baptism.

Who ever said that it was?

What are “works”?

The IT Is? Paul is telling the Jews that they were not "justified" by keeping the LAW OF MOSES and being circumcised.  The ANTITHESIS is not to say that people should not obey the COMMANDS (laws) of Jesus Christ. He did not "suggest" that we obey and be baptized or COMPLY NOT and be damned.

In Paul’s vocabulary, “works” fit in more than one category. We need to work our way through Romans to understand.

(Rom 2:6-10 ESV) 6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing [good works] seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;
8 but for those who are self-seeking
and do not obey the truth,
        but obey unrighteousness,
there will be wrath and fury.
9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.

In this pasage, “works” is a reference to moral merit: doing good, righteousness. Indeed, Paul is discussing “good” in contrast to “evil” in terms applicable both to Jews and Gentiles.

Paul will say the same things in chapter 6

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Obeying is a LAW in the sense of cause and effect: Paul rejects THE LAW OF MOSES given because of musical idolatry and not obededience to the commands (laws) of Jesus Christ. Who would want to do a legalistic end-run.

Is he referring solely to those Gentiles who had the Law of Moses? No –

(Rom 2:14-16 ESV) 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Abraham was a GENS or National or GENTILE. Abraham was a righteous person because he lived right: he was justified meaning that he did not need the Law of Moses to make him ceremonially pure.

Therefore, no Gentile nor Abraham was justified by faith as opposed to THE LAW OF MOSES without obeying whatever it is they trust in.

Of Isaac, a Gentile:

Gen. 26:3 Sojourn in this land,
and I will be with thee,
and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries,
        and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
Gen. 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Gen. 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws.
Gen. 26:6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: [obeyed the CONDITIONAL command]

Is. 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

This is the theme of Galatians. Paul’s argument isn’t that “we aren’t saved by works” so much as “we are only saved by faith.”

We repeat:  it is dangerous to presume to be a teacher without digging deeply and prayerfully into the Word rather than to discredit or judge people who, like Jesus

Jesus said "He that believeth AND is baptized SHALL BE saved.

That means to a disciple that "He that believeth and complieth shall be saved.

Believeth
or Pistis is the opposite of Apistos:

He that believeth not shall be DAMNED.

Believeth or complieth is the oppoosite of Apostos or disobeying and proving self a traitor by telling Jesus that He and His Father are liars.

Apisteo (g569) means to be unbelieving, meaning to disobey
Apistos
(g571) disbelieving, i.e. without Christian faith, a heathen, untrustworthy (person), faithless, infidel.

Faith is Obedience.

(Gal 3:2 ESV) 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you
receive the Spirit by works of the law
        or by hearing with faith?

Spirit is the "mind" of Christ (1 Cor 2): you receive the MIND of Christ by HEARING with Faith.  Jesus said:
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

(Gal 3:7-9 ESV) 7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

God in Christ only made one spiritual Covenant with Abraham: the Law of Moses was given because of transgression and regulated ONLY the outward body in a ceremonial and legal sense: it was not given as a spiritual law. The godly people were quarantined in the synagogue which was for READING and REHEARSING the Words of God.  If you want to be sons of God and Abraham here is the PATTERNISM.
Gen 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven,
        and will give unto thy seed all these countries;
        and in thy seed [Jesus]shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

Gen 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed
my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws.

Gen 26:6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: [obeyed God's commandment]

No, Abraham did not FORGIVE his own sins. No, Abraham was not SAVED by a "one step legalistic plan of salvation" EXTRACTED from the plan of Jesus Christ.

Yes, Abraham was JUSTIFIED because he was not ungodly AND because He keept the LAWS he was under BEFORE The Law of Moses was added as a CURSE.

In each case (and there are more verses to the same effect), Paul’s argument is that we aren’t saved by works of the law because we’re saved by faith. Because “the law is not of faith” (3:12), we aren’t saved by the law and, therefore, teaching that we are is another gospel.

(Gal 3:24-27 ESV) 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

You should grasp that Paul uses various forms of parallelism and the unstable wrest them to their own destruction. Proof texting is legalism.

Rom. 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Gal. 3:23 But before FAITH came, we were kept under THE LAW,
shut up unto THE FAITH which should afterwards be revealed.

Gal. 3:24 Wherefore THE LAW was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ,
that we might be justified by (the) FAITH

But after that (THE) faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster (THE LAW). Gal 3:25

Verse 25 is not a complete sentence.

WHAT?      FOR ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26

BECAUSE   [what I means is that] as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27

Galatians 3.27 quicumque enim in Christo baptizati estis Christum induistis

quīcumque (or -cunque ), quaecumque, quodcumque (also separately:

Galatians 3.27 quicumque enim in Christo baptizati estis Christum induistis

We are children of God BY faith IN Christ Jesus, and to corroborate that, I MEAN that those who have been baptized INTO Christ have put on Christ or been clothed with Christ

Enim
why because, for, for instance, namely, that is to say, I mean, in fact I. To corroborate a preceding assertion, yes indeed, yes truly, of a truth, to be sure, certainly, indeed: A. To prove or show the grounds of a preceding assertion

If Paul had only stopped at v. 25, the logic would be easy: “for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.” So what does baptism have to do with it?

We have ventured outside of the proof text and discovered that the Covenant (not law of Moses) Christ made with Abraham was based on Abraham's  PATTERNISM

Gen 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed
my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws.
We are saved by Faith BECAUSE we have obeyed the direct prophecy of Christ and command of Jesus Christ and understood by all who followed who wanted to be a Disciple of Christ: it is the LAW OF CHRIST if you want to be a DISCIPLE of Christ with a clear understanding you WILL do what He commands you to do and you will not mislead people.

You see, the hard question isn’t whether baptism is law. It’s plainly not. The harder question is: if we’re saved by faith and just faith, is baptism somehow a part of faith? And if it’s something else, how do we avoid making it into law?
