What is an Acceptable Baptism?
01/28/2012

by Jay Guin
February, 2012

Jay Guin: Because of how the question has affected fellowship among believers, I've been honored with an invitation to address the question: What is an acceptable baptism? I agreed, but I'm not feeling good about it. You see, I think it's entirely the wrong question. The question assumes that baptism is essential to salvation. And I think it's a mistake to start with that assumption.

By definition, a believer is one who has obeyed the Gospel of Christ which is an invitation to be added to HIS SCHOOL OF THE WORD.  No one becomes a brain surgeon by believeing that he has a brain. The problem arises when we fail to grasp that Jesus commanded that we make disciples by BAPTISM and ONGOING TEACHING.  A Christian does not do dogm but the command from the wilderness onward was to "use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is writtn for our learning."  Jesus accepts on the obedient as His disciples because trying to evade Christ's prophecy and Jesus' direct command would qualify one to be a student.
Luke 8:40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned,
the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:

and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as were being saved.
It may be a true assumption or a false one, but we don't begin by assuming. We properly begin by taking a step back from the baptism question and asking who is and who isn't saved. And if that question requires us to investigate what baptisms are sufficient to save, we pursue that line of inquiry. But we don't start by assuming the necessity of a sufficient baptism.

We don't assume anything: this is a direct command of Jesus as a condition of becoming a Christian or a Disciple of Christ: a disciple is taught to teach and observe what Jesus commanded to be taught. Jesus said that only those who believeth (complieth) will be saved and those who believeth not (apistos or complieth not) will be damned.  The gospel promise of REST from all of the ceremonial legalism--even appealing to the Levites (soothsayers) to justify "musical worship teams" and ACCEPTANCE by Jesus as a DISCIPLE in The School (only) of Christ (only).  Why would people be so WILLING to deny that and fail to justify God or call him a liar.

Only those who have obeyed are called believers.
Isaiah 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
John 12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled,
which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report?
and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
2Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance
on them that know not God,
and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
1Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Only believers who have been baptized receive A holy spirit and are added to His church by Jesus Christ.
Jay Guin:  The Old Testament evidence

It's a rare study of baptism that considers the Old Testament. Indeed, we often mistakenly consider the Old Testament a dead letter — useful for digging out Messianic prophecies for a sermon on Christian evidences or for teaching middle schoolers moral lessons, but useless for such serious studies as the nature of God's salvation.

No indeed: we disciples understand that the Spirit OF (preposition) Christ spoke only through the Prophets. Jesus of Nazareth as man made these prophecies more certain and Peter said that if we private interprete or further expound these prophecies we are false teachers.

That is, of course, an absurd conceit and our assumption that the Old Testament is irrelevant has greatly hindered our studies of the New Testament — written by Jews who quote the Old Testament on nearly every page.

We start in the Torah. There's far more material here than will fit into an issue of New Wineskins, and so I'll offer the briefest introduction to God's covenant with Abraham. If you miss that Old Testament theme, you'll inevitably miss much of what the New Testament is saying about salvation.

WE MIGHT BEGIN WITH CREATION.

The Creation or Recreation of the earth (fertile places) was IN water and BY water.

LET'S BEGIN WITH NOAH AND THE FLOOD AS PETER'S PROPHETIC TYPE

Baptism is "TYPE or a MODEL of FORM intended FOR IMITATION." It involves, God, faith, obedience, being placed IN the coffin, being saved BY water because THAT is how God planned it and since I AM NOT GOD I will not be caught "dead" calling Him a liar.

1 Pet. 3:21 The like figure (Antitupon or Antitype counterpart) whereunto
..........even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh,
..........but the answer of [Appeal FOR not PLEDGE] a good conscience toward God,)
..........by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have
obeyed from the heart that form (tupos a model for imitation) of doctrine

which was delivered you. Ro 6:17
............ But now being
............ made free from sin, and
............ become servants to God, ye
............ have your fruit unto holiness, and
............ the end everlasting life. Ro 6:22

2 Thess 3:9 Not because we have not power,
        but to
make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

Maybe YOU can be SAVED without the REMISSION OF SINS (connected only to baptism) but I DON'T THINK you can go into the Most Holy Place wearing DIRTY CLOTHES.  Paul says we are saved BY FAITH when we are BAPTIZED to be CLOTHED with Christ. Then we have A holy spirit translated into heaven WHEN we are added to the CHURCH which is AFTER we have been baptized.

To the general assembly and
church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the Spirits of just men made perfect, Heb 12:23

PAUL USED THE ESCAPE FROM SIN (EGYPT) BY BAPTISM UNTO MOSES:

LET'S LOOK AT MARK DESCRIBING MALACHI

1. The Bible is arranged in a logical order. For instance, The direct command of Jesus was:

Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mt 28:19 Go ye therefore, and
teach [disciple] all nations,

baptizING them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teach
ING them to observe all things whatsoever I have command
Mt 28:20 ed you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus returned in His Holy Spirit form at Pentecost, as promised, and poured out what ye see and hear.  They say the symbol of judgment: FIRE and the symbol of judgment: WIND (not a person spirit)

2. Only those who had been discipled by baptising AND ongoing teaching are called Christians.

3. Mark begins and ends by speaking about the command to BAPTIZE.

THE beginning (Arche, most important) of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; Mark 1:1

The gospel defined by Paul concerning the WORKS OF JESUS CHRIST are the first principle ot the PROTOS gospel. That is, the Gospel is that Jesus provided a way for us to be saved.

The word "beginning" is the word ARCHE: that means that Mark is going to tell us the MOST IMPORTANT part of the Gospel for we who are humans.

Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon

Archê , hê, (v. archô) beginning, origin
beginning,
from the first, from of old, lay a foundation,
from the
beginning, from the first, from of old,
logos the original argument,
the
principal sum, first principle, element

The ARCH is that upon which the structure is built. The GOOD NEWS is that we can obey a FORM of the POTOS gospe.

Therefore, Mark looks back to the GOSPEL prophesied by Malachi and forward to "THE" faith or the Christian system.

As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy WAY before thee. Mark 1:2

The voice (shouting) of one crying in the wilderness (a very lonely place), Prepare ye the WAY of the Lord, make his paths straight (level at once). Mark 1:3

Mark then reveals the most important principle of the gospel for those who are not Jesus the Christ.

John DID baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance FOR the remission of sins. Mark 1:4

This was the MARK of the presence of God in the flesh. Many Jews saw this baptizer as a SIGN of Messiah:

And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. Mark 1:5

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John 1:25

John explains his role to make known the Messiah. The passage noted is:

Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:

Mal 4:6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

To understand Malachi it is important to look where Mark points to prove that Baptism was prophesied.

BEHOLD, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the WAY before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. Malachi 3:1

But who may abide (comprehend or receive) the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a REFINER'S FIRE, and like FULLER'S SOAP: Malachi 3:2 (To Wash)

The refiner's fire made silver and gold to become a water vessel pure enough to enter into the temple. Our spirit is the temple of God. Fuller's Soap makes Crimson garments as white as snow.

THE WASHING PROCESS BY JESUS CHRIST WAS PROPHESIED TO BE:

Kabac (h3526) kaw-bas, to trample; hence to wash (prop. by stamping with the feet)... WASHING. The Greek Louo (g3068) means to bathe the whole person.

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, Re.1:5

Jay Guin: Abraham

God called Abram out of Ur and made a covenant with him in a series of encounters. God chose Abraham and so craved a personal relationship with him that he appeared in physical form to converse with him.
You know the story. Two central elements of the covenant are —
Paul discusses this very thing in Romans 4 —
(Romans 4:7-10 ESV) 7 "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin." 9 Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised."
THE MEANING OF IS IS: Paul is refuting the Jew's claim that REMISSION OF SINS comes only by obeying THE THE LAW OF MOSES and being CIRCUMCISED.
Romans 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven,
         and whose sins are covered.
Romans 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Romans 4:9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, [The Law]
or upon the uncircumcision also? [The Faith]
for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
Rom 10:12 For there is NO DIFFERENCE between the Jew and the Greek:
Rom 10:13 for the SAME Lord over all is rich unto all THAT CALL UPON HIM.
........... For whosoever shall CALL upon the NAME of the Lord shall be saved.
Acts 2:38 baptism is into the NAME or calling upon the name.
Acts 22:16 Baptism washes away sins because it CALLS upon the Name.
1 Pe 3:21 Baptism saves because it ASKS for A good conscience or A holy spirit.

How then shall they call on him in whom
they have not
BELIEVED? and

how shall they believe in him of whom they have not HEARD? and
how shall they hear without a
PREACHER (Kerusso Herald)? Rom 10:14

SEEMS THAT CALVIN IS CORRECT: NO ONE HEARS THE SPIRIT OR BELIEVES WITHOUT HEARING THE WORD.

Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach (Go and herald),
except they be sent? as it is written,
How beautiful are the FEET of them that
preach the gospel of peace, and
BRING glad tidings of good things

NOW NOTICE THAT HE THAT OBEYS
THE GOSPEL
IS THE ONE WHO HATH BELIEVED

But they have not all OBEYED the GOSPEL.
For Esaias saith, Lord,
who hath BELIEVED our report? Rom 10:16
So then FAITH cometh by HEARING, and hearing by the WORD of God. Rom 10:17
Abraham was not a Jew and lived hundreds of years before the Law of Moses was imposed because of musical idolatry.  In 1 Corinthians 10 and Romans 10 Paul uses the worship of the trinity as THE CAUSE of Israels being put UNDER THE LAW to keep the godly people safe from the.

The Abrahamic Covenant was made by God in Christ and it imposed no ceremonial legalism upon people: they were judged by their righteous conduct and by the practice of justice.
Psalms 15:2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness,
and speaketh the truth in his heart.
Isaiah 64:5 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness,
        those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou art wroth;
for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.
Acts 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him,
and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
SAYING NOTHING TO THE FAITH ONLY FAILURE TO READ THE WORD BUT:
Romans 4:10 How was it then reckoned?
when he was in circumcision, [under THE LAW OF MOSES]
or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

Jay Guin:  Paul points out that Abraham was circumcised after God counted his faith as righteousness. Therefore, his salvation was based on his faith and not by his circumcision, that is, by his obedience to God's law. Rather, Abraham was saved by faith and then Abraham responded with obedience.

Righteousness is not the same as Salvation:  Cornelius was a God Fearer and was therefore righteous. God sent Peter to "tell Cornelius how to be saved."  After God proved that the Gentiles were accepted by that same sound of wind (spirit) Peter commanded Cornelius to be baptized.

God counted Abraham righteous WHEN Abraham obeyed God's commands: He did not count Abraham righteous BECAUSE of cutting of flesh.
(Romans 4:23-25 ESV) 23 But the words "it was counted to him" were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

Paul concludes that those who have faith in Jesus share in God's promise to Abraham to count faith as righteousness.

Romans 4:18 Who against hope believed in hope,
        that he might become the father of many nations;
according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
Romans 4:19 And being not weak in faith,
he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old,
neither yet [considered] the deadness of Sarah’s womb:
Romans 4:20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief;
         but was strong in faith,
         giving glory to God;
Romans 4:21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised,
he was able also to perform.
Romans 4:22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
God did not make Abraham "saved by faith only" but He saw Abraham's actions as proving his righteousness which means that he was not "ceremonially impure" as the Jews were teaching.
Romans 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
Romans 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed,
        if we believe ON him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences,
and was raised again for our justification.

If we believe that Jesus was delivered for out offenses and raised again for our justification then whe have ACCESS:

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:9 Much more then,
being now justified by his blood,
we shall be saved from wrath through him.

THIS "SHALL BE" SALVATION FOLLOWS IN THE NEXT CHAPTER

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then?
Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Romans 6:3 Know ye not,
that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ
        were baptized
into his death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him,
that the body of sin might be destroyed,
that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin

THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST DOES NOTHING BASED ON FAITH ONLY.

Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Romans 6:17 But God be thanked,
that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form (tupos a model for imitation)
of doctrine which was delivered you.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

THERE IS ONLY ONE SPIRITUAL COVENANT IN THE BIBLE

GENESIS 15

God said that Abraham was justified by KEEPING His commands. This IS the meaning of FAITH. Paul in Hebrews says the same thing. James says the same thing. In Romans Paul quotes the fact that FAITH demands OBEDIENCE. Jesus said that if you don't believe and obey His final commission then you WILL BE DAMNED. God proved to Abraham that "stand still and see the glory of God" is just whining. He DEMANDED: "Lift up your arm and MOVE into the waters of death." Those who GLADLY RECEIVED the Word wanted to be baptized. What has gone wrong when people make a HUGE GROWTH INDUSTRY out of telling people that God in Christ was a liar.

The only possible response of Abraham to this God in Christ promise was to believe it: Abraham was not SAVED by faith, he had no sin because there was no law, he was not added to the Church of Christ.

And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. Gen 15:4

The Word is DABAR. Rubel says that John lifted the LOGOS idea from Greek philosophy but Logos is the translation of Dabar: the Logos of God or the Spirit of Christ spoke to Abraham.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. Gen 15:5

Do you suppose that Abraham whined: "Lord, I don't' have to Look." No! Abraham LOOKED UP but he did not do any work.

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness. Gen 15:6

The word Diatheke is never defined as a one sided contract in the literature.

In the New Testament the New Covenant is the way God IN Christ disposes of His property: forgiveness of sins and being added to His kingdom.

Secondly, the covenant is the ORACLE is the deposit of truth upon which the well-being of the believer rests.

We are entrusted with the inspection of the young men, and thus we have a right to examine their tools. If Oeagrus is accused, he is not acquitted before he has recited a passage [580]  from ‘Niobe’ and he chooses the finest. If a flute-player gains his case, he adjusts his mouth-strap in return and plays us the final air while we are leaving. A father on his death-bed names some husband for his daughter, who is his sole heir; but we care little for his will or [585]  for the shell so solemnly placed over the seal; we give the young maiden to him who has best known how to secure our favour. Name me another duty that is so important and so irresponsible.

Demosthenes 27:[13] Immediately after my father's death the defendant came and dwelt in the house according to the terms of the will, and took possession of my mother's jewels and the plate. In these he received the equivalent of about fifty minae. Furthermore, he received from Therippides and Demophon the proceeds of the sale of the slaves until he had made up the full amount of the marriage-portion, eighty minae;

Lysias on the property of Aristophanes 19:(39] for Conon's death and the dispositions made under his will in Cyprus have clearly shown that his fortune was but a small fraction of what you were expecting. He dedicated five thousand staters in offerings to Athene and to Apollo at Delphi;
(Genesis 22:18 ESV) " … and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed … ."
Jay Guin: The second promise is, of course, the reason that I and most modern Christians are Christians. God, through Jesus, invited the Gentiles into the Kingdom.

But we were admitted by faith, based on God's covenant with Abraham. You see, we Gentiles are saved by God's promises to Abraham. It's the very same covenant!

In Galatians 2, Paul makes the same argument —

Paul is discussing JUSTIFIED by law which is SALVATION but meaning NOT ceremonially unclean.

Moses lived 430 years before THE LAW and no one was justified or made righteous by THE LAW which is THE SUBJECT.

1Ti.1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man,

but for the lawless and disobedient,
for the ungodly
and for sinners,
for unholy and profane,
for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers,
for manslayers,

1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons,

and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
1:11 According to the glorious gospel
of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
Jay Guin: (Galatians 3:8-9 ESV) 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Galatians 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, [word]
        and worketh miracles among you,
doeth he it by the works of THE LAW, or by the hearing of faith?
Galatians 3:6 Even as Abraham believed God,
and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
God knew or recognized Abraham's righteousness BECAUSE he believed Him. Paul is not remotely discussing SALVATION BY FAITH ONLY but disabusing the Jews.

Galatians 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith,
the same are the children of Abraham.
Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith,
preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying,
In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Galatians 3:9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse:
for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things
which are written in the book of the law to do them.

Jay Guin: (Galatians 3:11 ESV) 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for "The righteous shall live by faith."

Galatians 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
The word "pistis" includes "to comply."  We accept the promise of Christ RATHER than depend on keeping The Law of Moses.

GOD TESTED ABRAHAM AND SAW ABRAHAM
DEMONSTRATE HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Righteousness does not means salvation or the remission of sins: a person is justified if they are known to be lawful citizens of whatever law they live under.
Gen. 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws
Gen 26:5 Because that
        Abraham obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws
.
FOR ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26

FOR [at enim  whati i mean is that] as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27

No obedience: no conception, no baby, no life: all life is the gift of God along with planting your garden and magically producing food.

Gen 26:5 Because that
        Abraham obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws
.
Rom. 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

Rom. 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Paul dismisses The Law of Moses because it was added because of transgression: That was the musical idolatry of the Egyptian trinity.  God turned them over to worship the starry host: He did not command the king, kingdom, temple, animal sacrifices or the musical exorcism of the Levites who performed the role of Soothsayers with instruments. This was to warn the godly people who lived by faith (complianc) that they would be executed if they even came near.
Gal. 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ
that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Gal. 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men;
Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed,
no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after,
as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Acts 3:24

Ye are the children of the prophets,
and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham,
And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Acts 3:25

Unto you first God,
having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you,
in turning away every one of you from his iniquities. Acts 3:26

Gal. 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made.
He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one,
And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Gal. 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God IN Christ,
the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul,
that it should make the promise of none effect.

Gal. 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise:
but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law?
It was added because of transgressions,
        till the seed should come to whom the promise was made;
and it was ordained by angels in the HAND of a mediator.
Gal. 3:20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
Gal. 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God?
God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life,
verily righteousness should have been by the law.

Gal. 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin,
that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Gal. 3:23 But before faith [the faith] came,
we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Gal. 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ,
that we might be justified by faith.

Gal. 3:25 But after that faith is come, [The Gospel]
we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
[The Law]

Gal. 3:26 FOR ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 FOR as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

We are the children of God by faith IN Christ Jesus (as opposed to the Law)
"What I means" is that "those who have been baptized INTO Christ ahve been clothed with Christ."
[27] quicumque enim in Christo baptizati estis Christum induistis

Enim why because, for, for instance, namely, that is to say, I mean, in fact I. To corroborate a preceding assertion, yes indeed, yes truly, of a truth, to be sure, certainly, indeed: A. To prove or show the grounds of a preceding assertion

at enim  for, for instance, namely, that is to say, I mean, in fact demonstrative corroborative particle. (Its position is regularly after the first word, or the first two or more closely connected words in the sentence truly, certainly, to be sure, indeed, in fact:

but indeed’ (on the use of enim in Plautus, see below)
Gal. 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free,
there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Gal. 3:29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed,
and heirs according to the promise
THE PROMISE WAS BASED ON ABRAHAM DEMONSTRATING HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Gen. 26:5 Because that Abraham
        obeyed my voice,
        and kept my charge,
        my commandments,
        my statutes,
        and my laws

Jay Guin:  We cannot adopt or teach a theology of salvation that contradicts God's covenant with Abraham.

That's true: Christ sets the rules: He said that if we "believeth not" which means "complieth not" were are by word definition treacherous and in revolt against the Word of God.
