In the 2017 Vision and Mission Booklet that we handed
out, we communicated,
“Where HERITAGE gives us
effective and
helpful
expression to OUR LOVE FOR GOD we
should listen.
Where it does
not, we must find other and new ways to express
this love.”
We said, “It is
wise to keep our focus on MISSION
Rather than HERITAGE as
we encourage others to love God.”
John 14:15 If ye love
me, keep my commandments.
John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth
them,
he it is that
loveth me:
and he that
loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
and I will love
him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord,
how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and
not unto the world?
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him,
If a man love
me, he will keep my words:
and my Father
will love him,
and WE
will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
John 14:24 He that loveth me NOT keepeth not
my sayings:
and the word
which ye hear is not mine,
but the
Father’s which sent me.
John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide
in my love;
even as I have
kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his
love.
1John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of
God,
when we love
God, and keep his commandments.
1John 5:3 For this is the love of God,
that we keep his
commandments:
and his
commandments are not grievous.
2John 6 And this is love, that we walk after his
commandments.
This is the
commandment, That, as ye have heard from the
beginning, ye should walk in it.
WE said, “It is
wise to keep our focus on MISSION
Rather
than HERITAGE
as WE
encourage others to love God.”

We think
that these people are saying that the Practices of
the Historical Church of Christ is just a tradition
or foolish trash or HERITAGE that you
inherited from your parents. Your godly parents from
the wilderness onward understood that music of any
kind is never mentioned and was indeed destructive
to the School of Christ.
Is God,
therefore, the contriver both of the mind, and of the
voice, and of the
tongues, unable
to speak eloquently?
Yea,
rather, with the greatest foresight,
He
wished those things which are divine to be
without
adornment,
that
all might
understand the things which He Himself
spoke to all."
Therefore God made all things to supply
a contest between two things.
Those enticements of pleasures, then, are the
instruments
of
that whose only business it is to
subdue virtue,
and to
shut out justice from men.
With
these soothing influences and
enjoyments it captivates their souls;
for it knows that pleasure
is the contriver of death. (Lactantius,

- The form of

- If
it is metrical, it lacks

sets him on the watch for the recurrence of such and
such

"Philodemos considered it
paradoxical that music should be regarded as
veneration of the gods while musicians were
paid for performing this so-called
veneration. Again, Philodemus held as self-deceptive the view that
music mediated religious
ecstasy. He saw the
entire condition induced by the noise of cymbals and
tambourines as a disturbance of the
spirit. (Paul called it mad or insane) He found it
significant that, on the whole, only
women and effeminate men fell into
this folly."

Nic. Eth. 1175b.1
But things that are akin to things of
different kinds must themselves differ in
kind.
[3] A still clearer
proof may be drawn
from the
hindrance that activities
receive
from the pleasure derived from other
activities.
For instance, persons fond of the flute
cannot
give their attention to a philosophical
discussion [The
LOGOS or Regulative
Principle]
when
they overhear someone playing the flute,
because
they enjoy music more than the activity
in which they are engaged;
therefore the
pleasure afforded by the music of the flute
impairs
the activity of study. |

in it the individual, who at first while becoming a
supporter of a young movement, feels lonely and
easily succumbs to the fear of being alone, for the
first time gets the picture of a larger community,
which in most people has a strengthening,
encouraging effect. The same man, within a company or a
battalion, surrounded by all his comrades, would set
out on an attack with a lighter heart than if left
entirely on his own. In the crowd he always
feels somewhat sheltered, even if a thousand
reasons actually argue against it.
But the community of the
great demonstration
not only strengthens the individual, it also unites
and helps to create an esprit
de corps. The man
who is exposed to grave tribulations, as the first
advocate of a new doctrine in his factory or
workshop, absolutely needs that strengthening
which lies in the conviction of being a member and
fighter in a great comprehensive body.
And he obtains an
impression of this body for the first time in the mass
demonstration. When
from his little workshop or big factory, in which he
feels very small,
he steps for the
first time into a mass meeting and has thousands and
thousands of people of the same opinions around him,
when, as
a seeker, (Als Suchender.' A Wagnerian phrase, which Hitler was apparently
determined to use at all costs) he is swept away by three or four thousand others
into the mighty effect of suggestive intoxication and enthusiasm,
when the visible
success and agreement of thousands confirm to him
the rightness of the new doctrine and for the first
time arouse doubt in the truth of his previous
conviction -
then he
himself has succumbed to the magic
influence of what we designate as 'mass
suggestion.'
The will, the
longing, and also the power of thousands are
accumulated in every individual. The man who enters such a meeting
doubting and wavering leaves it inwardly
reinforced: he has become
a link in the community.
The National
Socialist movement must never forget this and
in particular
it
must never let itself be influenced by those bourgeois s who know
everything better,
but who nevertheless
have gambled away a
great state including their
own existence and the rule of their class.

Richard Wagner was the unofficial
court composer of the Third Reich. Adolf Hitler said
that "Whoever wants to understand National
Socialistic Germany must know Wagner." Hitler's
appropriation of the Bayreuth Wagner Festival was to
serve his
own cultural propaganda purposes. Wagner was a
cultural hero for Hitler and his Nazis.
The strains of
Wagner were played during the Nazis' book-burning
ceremonies and when concentration camp
prisoners were about to be put to death.
Nazi Germany's main defense fortification was
called the "Siegfried Line," after the mythic hero
in Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung.
We will be evaluating our current
policy
regarding the
use of instrumental music.
And we will be looking for new
ways to call more people into the mission of
God.
We are
overwhelmed by God’s heart for the lost.
The Good
Shepherd left 99 sheep in the open field to pursue the
1 that was lost.
We believe God’s
people should reflect God’s heart!
This period of DISCERNMENT
will conclude with
open and HONEST
communication to the Woodmont family.
We will consider worship policies
and practices through the lens of our mission: Love
God, Love Each Other, and Love the World.
Yesterday, the shepherds and
ministers gathered to consider
worship from a
theological perspective.
We seek to honor God, above all
others, as we worship.
In February, we will be
considering WORSHIP from a missional
perspective.
We want to
mirror God’s love for the world with our assemblies.
And in March, we will assemble to
consider the PASTORAL implications
of changing or
maintaining our current worship policies and
practices.
Insights that EMERGE from
our time of DISCERNMENT
will be shared
through congregational teaching in both large and
small groups.
We invite and encourage your
questions, concerns, encouragement, and prayers. We
value your input and we will create space for
dialogue.
While WE know that WE
cannot “please” everyone WE
fully intend to lead everyone.
Any changes in
policy will be communicated
well in advance of implementation.
WE are asking
you to pray that God would lead us all. WE are asking
you to pray for us and to TRUST us. WE are
committing to open and honest communication.
Above all, WE are
committing to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
WE are
excited about these discussions and the MOVEMENT of
the Spirit in this place. WE are
confident that God will continue to guide us and lead
us as we seek to Love Him, to Love Each Other and Love
the World!
