Visibly Practicing the Unity of the Spirit: What Shall We Do?
John Mark Hicks means UNITY or UNION with everyone DOING WORSHIP and being friendly. Unfortunately for the world, Theology is based on MYTHS (songs and sermons) and Scripture insists that we BE SEPARATE FROM THE WORLD, the ecumenical, the kingdom of Satan marked by gender confusion and instrumental noise as the Instrumental-Trinitarian-Perverted play at Mount Sinai.

Acts.17.25.God.Not.Worshipped.Mens.Hands.html
It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever commanded a DAY for worship.
It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever commanded any action by the hands of men as worship.
It is a STRONG DELUSION to claim that Jesus died in vain unable to "supply all that applies to life and godliness."
It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever authorized ANY FUNDING for any funded STAFF to ride on the backs of widows
It is a STRONG DELUSION to claim that God commanded SINGING with or without a Mechanical Device.
It is a STRONG DELUSION and a LIE that there is a Law of Tithing or a Law of Giving
It is the DEFINITION of a CULT to operate a center of SANCTITY with command authority, controlling the member's life several days during the week.
THE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY IS A SCHOOL OF CHRIST AND SPIRITUAL OR RATIONAL WORSHIP IS READING AND UNDERSTAND A "LECTION" MADE BY "THE DIVINE."
g4352. proskuneo, pros-koo-neh´-o; from 4314 and a probable derivative of 2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): — worship.
THE CHRISTIAN ASSEMBLY IS DEFINED INCLUSIVELY AND EXCLUSIVELY AS A SCHOOL OF CHRIST: HIS DEMAND
John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me:
the Father hath not left me alone;

John 8:30 As he spake these WORDS, many believed on him.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
IF ye continue in my WORD, THEN are ye my disciples indeed;John Mark Hicks: I suggest five (yes, count them, five) modes of visible unity that give expression to the underlying unity of the SPIRIT among believers. These practices not only exhibit the unity of the Spirit but are also means by which the Spirit dynamically works among believers for unity. The Spirit acts through them to manifest the unity the Spirit has already achieved. At the same time these practices are also transformative as they not only move us into a deeper experience and recognition of that unity but they also transform us as exhibits of that unity.
Anti Christ is against Christ or in place of Christ. If you say that A Separate Holy Spirit person guides you into instrumental or trinitarian apostasy then you call Jesus a liar:
- The Holy Spirit. Strike "The".
TheHoly Spirit. Holy means pure, a adjective and not a proper noun. Strike the Holy. The HolySpirit. Spirit means WIND: in a figurative sense BREATH. It is never a person (other than Apollon-Abaddon) but the "Mental Disposition" of that person.
- John Mark Hicks says that the Spirit is A member of the family of three "centers of consciousnessness."
- OF is a preposition in case you missed the unity OF the Spirit is the unity which belongs to A Holy Spirit God Person----
- That would make no sense and is consistent with "theology" which has a thousand cuts to make the Breath OF God which inspired the text sound dumb.
- The Spirit OF unity is that which belongs to the BODY.
- That is the only way to justify hiring one's body out to explain God Who did not profit from our "postmodern" evolved culture.
- The Spirit OF Christ in Isaiah 55 commanded the "laity" not to PAY for the free water of the Word. That would eliminate the DISunity of the Musical Sectarians.
- In Isaiah 58 the Spirit OF Christ (God's breath) outlawed seeking our own pleasure or SPEAKING our own words.
Matt. 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said,
I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because thou hast hid these things from the wise
[Sophists: speakers, singers, instrument players]
and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
Matt. 11:26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
Matt. 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father:
and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father;
neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son,
and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
Jesus denied that A Holy Spirit Person knows anything that flowed between the ONE GOD THE FATHER and ONE mediator the MAN Christ Jesus. The Spirit or Breath of God has no option but to deliver what the Spirit OF God or the Spirit OF Christ breathed out.
Jesus said that the Spirit (breath) OF
1John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come,
and hath given us an understanding,
that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true,
even in his Son Jesus Christ.
This is the true God, and eternal life.
From the wilderness onward the Assembly was not called nor performed by "vocal or instrumental rejoicing or rhetoric". The only purpose for calling the godly out of their REST was to attend SCHOOL by hearing the Word of God. The assembly has a ONE-PIECE PATTERN.Hicks.Unity.Ephesians.3.gif
John Mark Hicks: the Spirit dynamically WORKS among believers for unity. The Spirit acts through them
This claims that the ONE GOD THE FATHER and the Man Jesus as our Teacher are POWERLESS without ANOTHER god person.
The POWER of God is in the GOSPEL of the KINGDOM or Church.

Confession – we confess Jesus is Lord by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3).John.Mark.Hicks.Practicing.Unity.in.the.Spirit Paul provides the ground of this point: “No one is able to say “Jesus is Lord” except by (in) the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:3). Contextually, this stands in contrast with those who say “Jesus is cursed” or who serve idols. This is an orienting confession. It is a centered-set confession, that is, we confess Jesus at the center of our faith journey. It is a directional confession, that is, we have turned our face toward Jesus and we walk toward him.
1Cor. 12:1 Now concerning SPIRITUAL GIFTS, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1Cor. 12:2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles,
carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
1Cor. 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand,
that no man speaking by the Spirit of God [SPIRITUAL GIFTS]
calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Spiritual Gifts were given only to ONE for a given task and ANOTHER for another inspired task.
1Cor. 12:8 For to ONE is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom;
to ANOTHER the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
Simon Peter worked for a living as did Jesus and all teachers and students of the Bible. The Spirit OF Christ was revealed to Peter and to all of those OF TRUTH by the prophets. Jesus was sent for a Little Flock or the Way that is called a SECT. That was to be a tiny remnant of Jews and Gentiles who would respond to the call or election.
The Holy Spirit OF Christ revealed all of the identifying signs of Messiah. God BREATHES (spirit) and the prophets put the SPIRIT into WORDS.
1Pet. 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1Pet. 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently,
who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1Pet. 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time
the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify,
when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
1Pet. 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves,
but unto us they did minister the things,
which are now reported unto you by them
that have PREACHED the gospel unto you
with the Holy SPIRIT sent down from heaven;
which things the angels desire to look into.
Rev. 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
SPIRIT produces WORDS: God puts His WORD into the MOUTH of ONE inspired teacher.
Jesus said that God HIDES from the wise or sophists meaning rhetoricians, singers or instrument players.
They would be OF the World, Kosmos or the ecumenical or the kingdom of the Devil. Jesus did not pray for those.
Those who gladly HEARD the Word recognized the invitation and were BAPTIZED. THEIR spirits were translated into a heavenly kingdom or or church to be PROTECTED from those of the World marked by the hypocritic performances claiming to represent Jesus Christ.
Most Jews attended the synagogue from their youth and heard the Prophets PREACHED by being READ each REST day.
Acts 15:14 Simeon [Simon called Peter] hath declared
how God at the first did visit the Gentiles,
to take out of them a people for his name.
Acts 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,
Acts 15:16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
Acts 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
Faith comes by Hearing the Word of God: Jesus said that His Words ARE Spirit. Faith DOES NOT come by a direct operation of a Spirit Person. Otherwise, Hicks agrees with Pseudo-Calvinists who think that a Spirit Person creates FAITH without hear the Word.
The Residue are the Lost Spirit consisting of a tiny Remnant of the Jews and Gentiles.
Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.g2645. kataloipos, kat-al´-oy-pos; from 2596 and 3062; left down (behind), i.e remaining (plural the rest): — residue.
g3062. loipoy, loy-poy´; masculine plural of a derivative of 3007; remaining ones: — other, which remain, remnant, residue, rest.
3007. lei÷pw leipo, li´-po; a primary verb; to leave, i.e. (intransitively or passively) to fail or be absent: — be destitute (wanting), lack.
Scholars missed out on PREPOSITIONS. Spirit literally means WIND and figuratively BREATH: the breath of God or man delivers WORDS which reveal the "The Mental Disposition OF that person." For instance, Spirit is always the spirit OF something: he has a NASTY spirit does not mean that NASTY is one of the "multiple personalities."
AND there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isaiah 11:1
Messiah and those made in the image of God are given EARS and EYES as the ways to RECEIVE information. Jesus said that what He spoke He HEARD from the Father. Those who claim a direct control by a "spirit" may need an exorcism because Jesus did not claim to have an ANTENNA to receive messages. And the spirit OF the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit OF wisdom and [OF] understanding, the spirit OF counsel and [OF] might, the spirit OF knowledge and OF the fear of the Lord; Isaiah 11:2
And shall make him of quick understanding [SPIRITUAL] in the fear of the Lord:
and he shall NOT judge after the SIGHT of his eyes,
neither reprove after the HEARING of his ears: Isaiah 11:3
On another thread we have Jesus defining the Scribes and Pharisees as a sect of Hypocrites. He points to those trying to appease God and collect money using MOUTH religion involving: rhetoricians, singers and instrument players. The Word SMITE has the same meaning as the ROOT from which the SOUND and SIGHT sects get PSALLO. Then they convert it from a warfare-polluting word to a SPIRITUAL WORSHIP WORD. And You pay them MONEY for what Jesus supplied FREE. Not TOO quick of understanding?
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor,
and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:
and he shall SMITE the earth with the rod [BRANCH] of his MOUTH,And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins. Isaiah 11:5
and with the breath [SPIRIT] of his LIPS shall he slay the wicked. [trouble maker, discorder] Isaiah 11:4

1.The fanatics wrongly appeal to the Holy Spirit
Those who, rejecting Scripture, imagine that they have some peculiar way of penetrating to God, are to be deemed not so much under the influence of error as madness. For certain giddy men have lately appeared, who, while they make a great display of the superiority of the Spirit,
reject all reading of the Scriptures themselves, and deride the simplicity of those who only delight in what they call the dead and deadly letter. But I wish they would tell me what spirit it is whose inspiration raises them to such a sublime height that they dare despise the doctrine of Scripture as mean and childish.
If they answer that it is the Spirit of Christ, their confidence is exceedingly ridiculous;
since they will, I presume, admit that the apostles and other believers in the primitive Church were not illuminated by any other Spirit. None of these thereby learned to despise the word of God, but every one was imbued with greater reverence for it, as their writings most clearly testify. And, indeed, it had been so foretold by the mouth of Isaiah. For when he says,
"My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever,"
he does not tie down the ancient Church to external doctrine, as he were a mere teacher of elements; he rather shows that,
under the reign of Christ, the true and full felicity of the new Church will consist in their being ruled not less by the Word than by the Spirit of God.
Hence we infer that these miscreants are guilty of fearful sacrilege in tearing asunder what the prophet joins in indissoluble union.
Add to this, that Paul, though carried up even to the third heaven, ceased not to profit by the doctrine of the law and the prophets, while, in like manner, he exhorts Timothy, a teacher of singular excellence, to give attention to reading, (1 Tim. 4: 13.)
This is Paul's unique word for worship in Spirit and in Truth: give attention or give heed. This is the same word in Hebrew used by David when he "worshiped" and sang songs upon his bed and meditated in his heart.
And the eulogium which he pronounces on Scripture well deserves to be remembered, viz., that
"it is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect," (2 Tim. 3: 16.)
What an infatuation of the devil, therefore, to fancy that Scripture, which conducts the sons of God to the final goal, is of transient and temporary use?
Again, I should like those people to tell me whether they have imbibed any other Spirit than that which Christ promised to his disciples. Though their madness is extreme, it will scarcely carry them the length of making this their boast.
But what kind of Spirit did our Saviour promise to send? One who should not speak of himself, (John 16: 13,)
but suggest and instil the truths which he himself had delivered through the word.
Hence the office of the Spirit promised to us, is not to form new and unheard-of revelations, or to coin a new form of doctrine, by which we may be led away from the received doctrine of the gospel, but to seal on our minds the very doctrine which the gospel recommends.
The Confession is propelled by the WORD which is by the BREATH of God. The confession is that there is ONE GOD the Father and One MAN Jesus Christ as mediator in song and sermon.
John.Mark.Hicks.Practicing.Unity.in.the.Spirit But none of this is possible except by the
work of the Spirit.
The confession arises out of the Spirit’s work,
operates within the LIFE of the Spirit,
and lives because we have all drunk of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).
Jesus said that His WORDS are SPIRIT: that is because God BREATHED (spirit) and Jesus SPOKE only what He heard from the ONE GOD THE FATHER.

We DRINK of the WORD of God which is from HIS SPIRIT, BREATH OR MIND.
To claim that the ONE GOD THE FATHER requires a separate god PERSON to communicate with those He created is one in a long series of blasphiing Him.

Trinitarians say that Jesus is GOD which refutes His Human Role as Lord and Christ neither of which are "deity words." Those who refute that John calls ANTICHRISTS.
John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of MAN ascend up where he was before?
John 6:63 It is the SPIRIT that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
the words that I SPEAK unto you, they are SPIRIT, and they are life.
John 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not.
For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not,
and who should betray him.
If you say that Jesus was one of THREE GODS with their own "centers of consciousness" then you call God a liar.
Num. 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Refuting His role as both God and Man:
Luke 24:37 But they were terrified and affrighted,
and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
Luke 24:38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled?
and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see;
for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.
God BREATHED (spirit) without meter and Jesus ARTICULATED the WORD of God. Peter confessed that Jesus was the expected Messiah Who would be of the fleshly SEED of Abraham and David. Peter did not say "you are JEHOVAH" or Lord-God but:
John 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?
thou hast the WORDS of eternal life.
The words that I SPEAK unto you, they are SPIRIT, and they are life.John 6:69 And we believe and are sure
that thou art that Christ,
the Son of the living God.
Christ is God's Anointed: The ROCK in the wilderness was God's CHRIST or appointed instrumental means. God annoints and The Man Jesus was ANOINTED.
Matt. 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said,
Thou art the Christ,
the Son
of the living God.
Matt. 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him,
Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona:
for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee,
but my Father which is in heaven.
The Spirit Who informed Peter that Jesus was The Christ is "my Father which is in heaven."
Spirit means WIND or BREATH. The Spirit OF a person is the MENTAL DISPOSITION of that Person and not a Multiple-Personality. Many bodies are bonded together by the Spirit OF oneness. Paul never uses SPIRIT in the sense of a person separated into another PEOPLE.
A body such as an assembly has A spirit or mental disposition. One spirit is contrasted to MANY spirits.
1Cor. 12:12 For as the body is ONE, and hath MANY members,
and all the members of that one body, being many,
are one body: so also is Christ.
1Cor. 12:13 For by ONE Spirit are we all baptized into ONE body,
whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free;
and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
Those with AN UNholy spirit are baptized in Water and receive the gift of A holy spirit or A good conscience. Those with a personal holy spirit are able to be emmersed into the one body and be cleansed of any personal ambition.
Jesus exists as HOLY SPIRIT and the Intercessor's or another Comforter is named "Jesus Christ the Righteous." These gifts OF Christ are not the gifts of another person which would DISQUALIFY one from having A holy spirit or mental disposition.
Eph. 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the GIFT of Christ.
Rom. 5:17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by ONE; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the GIFT of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Christ has become OUR righteousness, but Righteousness is NOT a separated PEOPLE.
Jesus said My WORDS are SPIRIT and LIVE. The power is in the gospel and which the Spirit or BREATH of God caused the ONE SON to Articulate. Is Hicks is correct and we cannot even CONFESS without a direct operation of A Holy Spirit Person then Jesus and Paul lied.
Rom. 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom. 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Rom. 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent?
as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things!
A believer is one who has OBEYED the Gospel. The Calvinism of LU denies that people can "use one mind and one mouth" to "speak that which is written for our learning" as THE mutual confession when the Word (regulative Principle) is PREACHED bey being READ and REHEARSED as commanded from the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness onward.
Rom. 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Rom. 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the WORD of God.John.Mark.Hicks: This confession is made from within a story, which is essentially what is called the Apostles’s Creed or the developing Regula Fidei (Rule of Faith) of the early church. It gives shape to the confession of the Lordship of Jesus and locates believers in the flow of the history of God’s people.
The Apostle's Creed or confession is not a LITURGICAL RELIGIOUS OBSERVATION to which Jesus said the kingdom does not come.
We confess the Father as creator,
Jesus as the Son of God,
and the Holy Spirit as the communion of believers.

I promised, in my last number, to give a short account of the origin of creeds as distinguished from the word of God in the gospel. This I do, the more effectually, to evince the deception that is practised upon the world and the delusion under which it labors on this subject.
The first creed of which we are informed, as distinguished from "THE FAITH
which was once delivered to the saints,"
is presented to us under the imposing but false title of "The Apostles Creed,"
which is so often repeated by the Roman Catholics and the Episcopalians as of divine origin.
Christian Union.--No. III. by Christian Union, pp. 189-192.Christian union can result from nothing short of
the destruction of creeds and confessions of faith,
as human creeds and confessions have destroyed christian union.
When ever the setting aside of creeds and confessions shall be attempted,
christians will give to the world, and to angels and to themselves,
proof that they do believe in the word of God.

Paul explained how we might be united and SPEAK THE SAME THINGS.

Romans 15:6 ONE God: ONE lord And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Romans 15:14 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister (deacon) of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: Romans 15:8 [Prophets made certain] Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God. "The word that is employed for this "anaginosko, anagnosis) is the technical term for the cultic reading aloud of the Old Testament in the synagogue. By applying this terminology to the reading of his own epistles he not only ascribes the same authority to the apostolic word as to the Old Testament writings...he also combines a quotation from the Old Testament with a word of Jesus and introduces the whole with the familiar formula: 'for the Scripture says.'" THE APOSTLES CREED RECOGNIZES JUST ONE GOD THE FATHER AND ONE SON, JESUS
The first mention of the expression "Apostles’ Creed" occurs in a letter of 390 CE from a synod in Milan and may have been associated with the belief, widely accepted in the 4th century, that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, each of the Twelve Apostles contributed an article of a creed.[2][3]

John Mark Hicks: Theologically, we acknowledge this, whoever confesses “Jesus is Lord” does so “in (or BY) the Spirit.” We recognize the work of the Spirit in the confession itself.
That which enables one to be baptized FOR the remission is this confession.

and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.
And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
If Jesus is the Son of God then Jesus is NOT GOD.
John.Mark.Hicks: Whenever we hear Jesus confessed, or the Triune faith articulated, we confess that the Spirit is at work.
We may embrace the unity of believers through this confession that is the result of the Spirit’s enabling presence.

John.Mark.Hicks: Theologically, transformation is the goal of God’s agenda. T
Transformation is an effect of communion.
Through mutual indwelling,
we are transformed by the presence of the Spirit in our lives.
The fruit of the Spirit, then, is evidence of our union with God.
The fruit of the Spirit is the life of the Spirit already present in us.
PAUL ALWAYS CONTRASTS OUR FLESH WITH OUR SPIRIT. Hicks is saying that no one can ----

Gal. 5:19 Now the works of the FLESH are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

- Liturgy – we worship IN the Spirit (John 4:24; Philippians 3:3).
John.Mark.Hicks: The foundation of liturgy—not necessarily the foundation of liturgical forms—is the work of the Spirit. Our liturgical acts—not necessarily our liturgical forms—are deeply rooted in the work of the Spirit. Assembly, as communal praise and worship, is mediated by the Spirit. We worship the Father through the Son in the Spirit. Assembly, as an eschatological, transforming and sacramental encounter with God, happens in the Spirit; it is a pneumatic event. This is what gives significance and meaning to Assembly, and it is also the root of the unity we experience through Assembly as the whole church—throughout time and space—are gathered before the throne of the Father in the Spirit.

John.Mark.Hicks: Liturgy might not appear to be a very fruitful approach to thinking about the unity of the Spirit since “worship” has often divided communities. The point will turn on whether or not we are able to discern the role of the Spirit in liturgy that transcends specific forms. If we take seriously the point—made in the Gospel of John—that the Spirit vivifies all life, sacrament, and worship in such a way that the reality is rooted in the work of the Spirit rather than in the specific form, then we can move beyond binding the Spirit to that form. There are no fixed forms that bind the Spirit. Rather there are gracious gifts—even specific forms—through which the Spirit offers communion and grace (e.g., sacraments). We may have preferred forms or even think some forms more biblical or more theologically coherent, but the forms are not boundaries for the Spirit.
To recognize that the Spirit is the means by whom we commune with and experience God, that this means is not dependent upon perfectionistic obedience to specified forms, and that the Spirit is not limited by forms, enables us to affirm the presence of the Spirit among those communities who do not share the forms that we think are most biblical. We may embrace the unity of believers (worshippers) through our eschatological and sacramental encounter with God in assembly by the enabling presence of the Spirit.
- Practicing the Kingdom of God – we minister in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:18-19).
John.Mark.Hicks: Spirit Christology is particularly important in the Gospel of Luke. The Spirit anoints Jesus, leads him into the wilderness, and empowers him for ministry in Luke 3-4. This is the ministry of the kingdom of God in which Jesus practices the kingdom of God by heralding the good news of the kingdom, exercising authority over the principalities and powers, and healing brokenness. Jesus is sent, and he sends a people.
This is the missional ministry into which believers are called. This praxis is an expression of the life of the Spirit within the community, and the community of Jesus, empowered by the Spirit, continues the teaching and doing of Jesus, that is, they continue to practice the kingdom of God.
When believers practice the kingdom of God, the Spirit is present. Where the Spirit is present, Jesus is present. This manifests the unity of the Spirit through praxis. It is a missional unity. We may embrace the unity of believers through shared ministry (shared participation in the good news of the kingdom of God) by the enabling presence of the Spirit.
- Spiritual Formation Practices – we pray in the Spirit (Jude 20).
In Luke’s Gospel the kingdom of God comes in response to prayer by the ministry of the Spirit. This connects points four and five, but it also calls us deeper into the experience of prayer itself.
The unity of believers through the presence of the Spirit in prayer is a common theme in the history of spirituality. Throughout that history we see evidence of the presence of the Spirit in communal and individual experiences. This is where an acquaintance, if not a full immersion in, the history of spirituality might open doors for conversations about unity.
Theologically, we recognize that the practice of prayer (as well as other disciplines) is rooted in the work of the Spirit. The Spirit is present to listen and speak in these moments. When a community practices them together, or each member of a community practices them in their own walk with God, the Spirit works to unite through shared experiences and shared communion. We may embrace the unity of believers through shared experience and communion in prayer by the enabling presence of the Spirit.
Conclusion
The present experience of visible unity, however, is progressive (though not always evident). The present is not a “perfect” manifestation of the eschatological telos. Consequently, we pursue unity, just as we pursue sanctification. The church is constantly undergoing a process of communal sanctification parallel to the process of individual sanctification. It should not surprise us that the church is not united in experience since we all acknowledge our own progressive sanctification.
Eph perfection
At the same time, however, we are not left with nothing. Though we have not yet experienced the fullness of our unity with God and with each other—and we will not until the eschaton, we do—even now—experience that future when we give space to the presence of the Spirit. We are already united, and we progressively experience that reality the more the Spirit sanctifies our communities and our lives. The present practice of visible unity though marred by brokenness is healed by mercy; it is hindered by human brokenness but empowered by the gifts the Spirit offers to the church, which include the five gifts listed above.
Through the practice of these gifts, the Spirit mediates an already-but-not-yet experience of that unity. Together, we confess Jesus is Lord; together, we seek transformation; together, we participate in the eschatological assembly; together, we practice the kingdom of God; and together, we pray in the Spirit. Yes, you counted correctly. The number is five.
