K. C. Moser Can The Gospel Be Obeyed?

Firm Foundation, vol. 51, February 6, 1934, p. 2.

K.C. Moser: It is frequently asserted that the gospel, strictly speaking cannot be obeyed. Such an assertion was made long ago and it has been repeated times without number down to our day. It has become almost a religious axiom. Let us see whether it is possible to obey the gospel.

See Jay Guin Reviews defending K.C. Moser and others denying the role of Baptism.

Somehow I doubt that.  The thesis that no one can OBEY THE GOSPEL defines the Good News as just the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.  Paul didn't say that this was the CORE of the gospel

1Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,
        how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
Proteros and prōtos , I. of Place, before, in front, p. podes the fore-feet

A dog is not JUST the front feet! If you read the rest of the chapter you will see that Jesus died to DEFEAT death.

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood,
        he also himself likewise took part of the same;
that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death,
        that is, the devil;
Hebrews 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Of the Israeliites;
Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them:
but the word preached did not profit them,
not being mixed with faith in them that heard it
God told Moses to "stop whining" and lift up your arms and march into the Red Sea: "Standing still" and seeing the salvation of God was repudiated by God. They violated The Book of The Covenant which was the good news preached to Abraham:

1. They worshipped the universally pagan view of the triad of gods (Isis, Osiris, Horus).
2. They rose up AGAINST God in musical idolatry.

Therefore, Moser etal does not know that the fundamental prophesied meaning of our REST is to be freed from the laded burden and burden laders. Only then can we accept the invitation:

Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said,
I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
because thou hast HID these things from the wise and prudent,
and hast revealed them unto babes.

Doctors of the law take away the key to knowledge: as Scribes and Pharisees Jesus called them hypocrites and Christ in Ezekiel 33 named them performance preachers, singers and instrument players.

Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually,

that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

And He provides the "fruit" FOR the lips:

Isaiah 57:19 I create the fruit of the lips;
Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.

In Isaiah 58 Christ outlawed seeking our own pleasure or speaking our own words: That is what Paul commanded in Romans 15.

K.C. Moser: But first, I shall let another speak: "Then, in some way the gospel must be obeyed. No man can obey the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. That is impossible.

Let's suppose that Moser is wrong rather than calling the inspired writers liars: if the Spirit wanted to say BELIEVE THE FACTS and then ceases to reveal the Christ The Holy Spirit was smart enough to say what He meant: isn't it blasphemy for those fighting the clear statements of Scripture.

But, this is the beginning or foundation upon which the GOOD news is built.  This is a PATTERN CAPABLE OF BEING imitated: when you imitate the pattern you are spiritual entombed with Jesus Christ.

By setting up a straw man based on not being able to defend GOOD NEWS, Moser is going to say that BELIEVING the Gospel is OBEYING the Gospel.  When people say something that God or the Spirit of Christ has not said that is called blasphemy. Going to the extreme of saying that when Jesus commanded us to OBEY by being baptized Moser said that he meant obeying the gospel by just BELIEVING the gospel.

Matt. 12:30 He that is not with me (CENI) is against me;
and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.  (and BOASTS about it)
Matt. 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you,
All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men:
but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Matt. 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him:
but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost,
it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

If you say that the command to obey and be baptized is just the command to believe than you have called Jesus and the Spirit of Christ a liar.
Jer 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me,

K.C. Moser: Paul tells us just how this is done: 'But thanks be to God, that whereas ye were servants of sin, ye became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching whereunto ye were delivered: and being made free from sin, ye became servants of righteousness" (Rom. 6:17). What was impossible man, God made possible. While we cannot obey the death, burial and resurrection of Christ we can obey the form of it. We do this being "buried therefore with him by baptism into death."

If it is impossible to obey the gospel, [Moser does not know the meaning of GOOD NEWS]
and man has to obey a "form of it,"
then the gospel is not God's power to save.

The Gospel or good news is that by OBEYING the direct command to be baptized one can be free of sin AND have A holy spirit or A good conscience and be able to read BLACK text on BROWN paper (2 Cor 3) and even grasp that THE LORD IS THE SPIRIT. Jesus poured out pure Grace and Moser etal REJECTS that and gives themselves the right to JUST BELIEVE something.  If one obeys A PATTERN CAPABLE OF BEING IMITATED and ordained by Jesus Christ then obeying that PATTERN is obeying the Gospel because Jesus Christ DEFINES TERMS.

In this case Paul should have said: "For I am not ashamed of a form of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation."

The gospel is the POWER and Obeying the gospel commands is another thing.

Believing that Jesus Christ shed His blood to remove the wrath we hold toward God and "cool us off" gives one the power or RIGHT to be saved.

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God
by the death of his Son,
much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Of course Paul ends by saying that we must CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD: this is done only by being baptized into Christ. Several verses before.

Paul said the Lord would take vengeance on those "that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus."

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned:
but he that believeth not is condemned already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

He said not a word about the impossibility of obeying the gospel,
or of substituting a form for the real gospel.
Such an idea is as foreign to the Bible as the related doctrine of transferring the efficacy of the blood to water.
What else will be done to mutilate the gospel?

That is pretty silly: The efficacy is not in the water but of obedience.

K.C. Moser: But we are told that Paul tell us just how to obey the gospel.
We are then referred to Rom. 6:17,18.
It is assumed that Paul here has special reference to baptism; for the writer concluded:
"We do this (obey the gospel) in being 'buried therefore with him by baptism into death.'"

Then baptism only is gospel obedience! If this is true several scriptures need revising.
It cannot be proved that Rom. 6:17 has any more reference to baptism than to faith.

Faith is not an ANTI-Tupos or A pattern capable of being imitated.

Romm. 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Rom. 6:15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
Rom. 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
        his servants ye are to whom ye obey;
whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
If a person believes in the sin of gluttony but does not OBEY that form of life he is NOT a glutton. Only when he OBEYS or DOES something overt is he a glutton.
Romans 6:[16] nescitis quoniam cui exhibetis vos servos ad oboediendum servi estis eius cui oboeditis sive peccatisive oboeditionis ad iustitiam

Believing that Jesus died, was buried and resurrected can NEVER be called obedience or YIELDING.

Rom. 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

That FORM is both Written and exampled.  Christ wants to to be His Disciples: it is silly to think that one can be a disciple of Aaron the Master Tentmaker without being accepted as a student into the mysteries of his trade.

B. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:

It is self-evident that those who BELIEVED were qualified TO BECOME Disciples: they were accepted BY baptism and facilitated BY teaching what Jesus commanded to be taught. No one became a disciple until they submitted to the Master Teacher.

The expression includes baptism, but does not stand for it exclusively. The scriptures should never be forced to teach what is not clearly in them."

BAPTISM IS THE ONLY SUBJECT IN ROMANS 6

The SUBJECT is BAPTISM: We obey a "pattern capable of being imitated." We are THEN free from sin.

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then?
        Shall we continue in sin
, that grace may abound?
Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
Romans 6:3 Know ye not,
that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death,
we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, t
hat the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
Romans 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

One can believe the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus,
but we are told one cannot obey the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.
Hence faith in Christ is not included in the obedience of the gospel.
Paul didn't write in Chapters: THE subject is to prove to the Jews that a Gentile who has faith is qualified or ceremonially clean without becoming a Jew and being baptized.   Back in chapter 5:
Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith,  [not ceremonially disqualified]
we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Romans 5:2 By whom also
we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand,
and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound.
But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death,
even so might grace reign through righteousness
unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.
Without FAITH it is impossible to please God: by what kind of "scholarship" should one suppose that Paul ia commanding BAPTISM without faith. No one in history ever said that "baptism does not save" without quickly adding "without faith."
K.C. Moser:(Suppose I should remotely hint that baptism is not part of obedience to the gospel, what would be the response? I have long noticed that most any position is tolerated just so it appears to exalt baptism, even at the expense of faith or the blood of Christ.)
We would suggest that such a person go back to remedial reading grade 6. Paul told the Jews in Corinth that they could neither HEAR nor READ the Old Testament until they turned, converted owr were baptized INTO Christ. They--wow!--they would understand that the Lord IS THAT SPIRIT. I suggest that the writer knows of no one who exalts baptism "at the expense of faith or the blood of Christ."

K.C. Moser: The gospel has no substitute. It is God's power to save those who obey it. Neither does obedience to the gospel have a substitute. It is not only possible to obey the gospel, in the strictest sense, but one has to do it or be lost.

But what is the gospel? The gospel does not consist in the detached facts of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The gospel is not simply facts about Jesus. The good news of salvation is Jesus crucified for our sins, buried, and raised for our justification.

The gospel consists in a person in whom to trust,
not simply in one command to be obeyed.
        Commands are not the gospel.

Christ in Spirit defined the gospel and the future REST in great details which passes judgment on all scholars and most preachers. It is NOT good news that Jesus had to die for this writer's sins.  Jesus never "preached this refusnik's gospel as self centered. Any preacher who claims that this is THE GOSPEL should stand up, read it, and go get a job: What they ALWAYS mean is that Jesus preached a minimalist gospel and THEY have the right to fill in the silent blanks and write their own gospel:

Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, [CENI]
        teaching in their synagogues,
and preaching the gospel of the kingdom...

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world [CENI]
for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee,
preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
The Kingdom of Christ is the Body or Church of Christ.  No one is added to this kingdom who has not been baptized. Therefore, baptism is THE WAY God in Christ has chosen by which you request A holy spirit or A good conscience so that YOU are then fit to enroll in the School of Christ.

K.C. Moser:The gospel is appropriated by means of obedience to commands, but commands are no more the gospel than eating is food. Food is appropriated by means of eating. But eating is not food. And mind you, it takes food to perpetuate life.

A mere form will not do it. Jesus is the Saviour. He has no substitute.

THAT gives Christ the right to define the conditions for entering into HIS Rsst (meaning stop the speaking, singing, playing)

Jesus commanded and Paul affirmed that OBEYING THAT FORM is the EFFECTIVE MEANS of the remission of sins because that is how Christ in Isaiah said that YOUR crimson body can become as white as snow. Without receiving A holy spiriit or A good conscience you are NOT able to become a disciple of Christ. The ekklesia or synagogue (Paul's words) is EXCLUSIVELY the reign of Christ where His BODY assembles to be fed only by HIM.  It is not possible to be a disciple and disobey the Master.

K.C. Moser:Neither does the God ordained way of appropriating him have a substitute.
The gospel consists not of forms, but of realities.
It is too much to say
the gospel consists of facts to be believed,
        commands to be obeyed,
        and promises to be enjoyed,
and then assert only the commands can be obeyed.

Human Nature 101a knows that there is a natural process by which one enters into a medical school.  This natural process is defined in Romans 10 where "calling on the Name of the Lord" is only done at the time and place of baptism.

K.C. Moser:Only a third of the gospel can be obeyed! Strictly speaking,
the gospel is not facts, commands, or promises.
The gospel concerns a person, not mere facts.

The gospel is appropriated by obedience to commands and as a result of obedience to the gospel we enjoy the promises of God. Peter preached the gospel (Acts 2): then gave the commands based upon the gospel; the people obeyed and enjoyed the promise of forgiveness of sins. Peter's gospel consisted in Christ crucified, buried and raised for man's salvation. His commands were repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ (implying of course faith). His promises were the remission of sins and the reception of the Holy Spirit.

BUT WHAT IS IT TO OBEY THE GOSPEL? This is a Bible question and has a Bible answer. The expression "obey the gospel" is found three times in the Bible.

The places are Rom. 10:16 (King James Version),

ROMANS 10

The PLAY at Mount Sinai was the musical idolatry of the Egyptian trinity.

Rom 10:7 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise,
........... Say not in thine heart, Who shall ASCEND into HEAVEN?
........... (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

Do not commit the unpardonable sin by CLAIMING to have the musical power to LEAD people into the presence of God!

Rom 10:6 Or, Who shall descend into the deep?
........... (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

Rather, here is how EVERYONE is included.

Rom 10:8 But what saith it?
........... The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, [not your spirit]
........... and in thy heart: that is,
........... the word of FAITH, which we PREACH;

Paul MINISTERED the Spirit by preaching: Jesus said MY words are SPIRIT and LIFE.

Rom 10:9 That if thou
........... shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
........... and shalt BELIEVE in thine heart
........... that God hath RAISED him from the DEAD,
........... thou shalt be saved.

Jesus said, by the definition of words:

He that COMPLIETH by being baptized SHALL BE saved

He that COMPLIETH NOT shall be damned.

Why is that?

Rom 10:10 For with the heart
........... man believeth unto righteousness; and
........... with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Eisodos (g1529) ice'-od-os; from 1519 and 3598; an ENTRANCE (lit. or fig.): - COMING, entering) in (to).

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever BELIEVETH on him shall NOT be ASHAMED.

Is that going to TRUMP everything Paul has ACCUMULATED as a logical process? Just CALLING on the name of the Lord OMITS your GRACE and FAITH. BUT, Paul is revealing God's PREDESTINATED PURPOSE that there is NO DIFFERENCE.

Max Lucado lifts that out of context and says "Just call God Father." Well, God's Name is not FATHER.

Rom 10:12 For there is NO DIFFERENCE between the Jew and the Greek:
Rom 10:13 for the SAME Lord over all is rich unto all THAT CALL UPON HIM.
........... For whosoever shall CALL upon the NAME of the Lord shall be saved.

CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD IS ONLY BY BAPTISM

  1. Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
  2. Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  3. Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for
the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  4. Zeph. 3:9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
  5. And now why tarriest thou? arise, and BE BAPTIZED, and WASH away thy SINS, CALLING on the NAME of the LORD. Acts 22:16
  6. Peter in Acts 2:38 says that God will give us A holy spirit. In 1 Peter 3 he says that we APPEAL TO, REQUEST or CALL UPON God for A clear conscience.
  7. And corresponding to that, BAPTISM now SAVES you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an APPEAL to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 3:21

THAT IS THE PLAN OF SALVATION IN ONE CHAPTER which agrees with everything else in the Bible

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:18 But I say, Have they not heard?
Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.
Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know?
First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.
Romans 10:20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith,
I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
Romans 10:21 But to Israel he saith,
All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people

K.C. Moser:Paul's reference is to Isaiah 53:1. Isaiah's words are: "Who hath believed our report?" To Paul, believing the report was obeying the gospel. John has also referred to Isaiah 53:1. "But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they believed not on him: that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report?"' (John 12:37-38). To believe on Christ with Paul is to obey the gospel.

He has ignored the meaning of faith: a person who HAS believed HAS obeyed the gospel.

Moser did not look at Isaiah 53 which has lots of other things to say: to believe the repoort had nothing to do with "faith only" but actively building up or "turning to the right.  See more on Isaiah 53 below:

Is. 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

If you TRUST your banker and refuse to put your money in his bank, you do NOT trust him. Trusting Jesus Christ means that you follow His commands to be baptized.  Neither Moser or any known preacher has any respect for Christ who spoke only through the prophets and apostles.

Isaiah 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

K.C. Moser: 1 Peter 4:17.

1 Pet. 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian,
let him not be ashamed; but let him
glorify God on this behalf.
1 Pet. 4:17 For the time is come that
        judgment
must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us,
what shall the end be of them that
obey not the gospel of God?
  1. The Great Commission was to make disciples of believers by baptizing and teaching what Jesus taught.
  2. The disciples were called Christians at Antioch.
  3. Therefore a Christian is a believer who has been baptized.
  4. A Christian is part of the house of God
  5. One who has not obeyed the Gospel is not part of the body of Christ.
  6. No honest person can miss the connection to baptism:
  • Paul preached the Gospel
  • People believed the gospel and wanted to know what to DO..
  • Peter commanded that believers DO something:
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
        for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward [croked] generation.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should [were being] be saved.
ONLY those who believed, confessed, repented and were baptized received the remission of sins and therefore A holy personal spirit.  Only those were added to the Church of Christ.  They were "righteous" in the sense of not being ceremonially impure. They were baptized FOR the remission of sins.  Their spirit became A holy spirit. This simply gave them the right and power to be added to the SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE  and become Christians.
Those who "obeyed not the gospel" were still sinners.

Sins are never remitted by faith-only. Only those who have OBEYED the form or "pattern capable of being imitated" had their sins "washed away."

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized,
and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

1 Pet. 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
where shall the ungodly and the
sinner appear?
1 Pet. 4:19 Wherefore, let them that suffer according to the will of God
commit the keeping of their souls to him in
well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

K.C. Moser: There is nothing in the context of the last two passages to indicate just what is meant by the expression "obey the gospel." But it can be certainly known what Paul meant by the expression "obeyed the gospel" in Rom. 10:16. Hear him: "For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?"'

Chapter 3 comes before chapter 4 and it is criminal to ignore it:

1 Pet. 3:21 The like figure (Antitupon or Antitype counterpart) whereunto

  1. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to build an Ark or drown
  2. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to cross the Red Sea or be destroyed by FAITH ONLY when God said "Quit whining, lift up your arm and MOVE into the jaws of death.
  3. We are baptized by GRACE instead of having to be pinned on a stake and shed OUR blood.

And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 3:21NAS

Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 3:21RSV

We have shown that only those who were BAPTIZED as the primary requirement to be admitted into the kingdom of God were called believers.

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles,
Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Acts   2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for [in order to] the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Moser etal do not want you to have to repent, receive the remission of sins, receive A holy spirit, save yourselves FROM the crooked race of Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites meaning "speakers, singers, instrument players" (Ezek 33)

Their failure to believe was their failure to obey the gospel.

Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

K.C. Moser: Therefore, to believe the gospel is to obey the gospel.
To believe the gospel is to believe in, trust in, Christ crucified, buried, and raised for our justification.
This is the way to appropriate Christ. The gospel saves the believer (Rom. 1:16).
God saves those who obey the gospel.

I would think that no one is so simple that they think that to BELIEVE a statement or command is the same as to OBEY that statementor command.

Obeying the gospel is appropriating Christ crucified. The death of Christ for our sins naturally
implies the obligation of man to accept him. Hence the expression, "obey the gospel."

Once the jailer inquired: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Paul and Silas answered: "Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved." Paul elsewhere said the gospel saves the believer. When the jailer believed "on the Lord Jesus," was he obeying the gospel?

The gospel is Christ crucified, buried and raised for our sins. The jailer believed on this Christ. He was commanded to believe. He obeyed. Did he not obey the gospel? Is not believing the gospel obeying the gospel? Paul thought so. As an accompaniment that EMBODIES faith, baptism may be considered a part of obedience to the gospel. Yet it is nowhere called obeying the gospel. Much less is it the only means of obeying the gospel.

How could the jailer BELIEVE before he heard the gospel: when he heard the gospel was baptized and THEN called a believer.

Jesus said "He that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved." The first task is always to produce faith: faith comes by hearing. Therefore, Paul preached the gospel in order to preach baptism.  The jailer KNEW somehow that the only response for a believer is
BAPTISM.  If words have meaning then believing does not mean obeying.

Now, the ones step Moser plan of salvation.

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on [Pisteuson] the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Well, Moser stops there because preachers believe that LIFTING factoids means that they retain their truthfulness when they no longer have roots.  The Jailer wants to be saved FROM the "crooked generation" liable to put him to death. Paul makes the Body of Christ the "safe house" FROM the crooked generation (skolion singers). That gives him grace and time to become a disciple for the rest of his life.

So, Paul knew that he had to preach the word of the Lord to the man because he still did not believe:

Acts 16:32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.

Something funny happened: when Paul preached the word of the Lord, the jailer showed repentance and wanted to be baptized. Where, oh, where did he get any hint of baptism if Paul was not sent to baptize?

Acts 16:33 And he (jailer) took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.

After the Jailer and his inmates heard the GOSPEL they were baptized INSTANTLY without joining a church: only Jesus can ADD you to the church AFTER He has cleansed you.

Now, after baptism he is a BELIEVER and he HAS been saved:

Acts 16:34 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing [pepisteukτs] in the Lord.

God has His own plan for God but we are not God. He is free to treat people any way He wishes.  However, our purpose is to teach the Word 'as it has been taught' and make disciples in the full sense by baptizing them and through further teaching.

K.C. Moser: It is not wise to say a thing cannot be done when the Lord says it must be done to be saved. Can one believe? Faith that saves means trust.
        One cannot trust in facts
.
The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ are facts.
        Hence one cannot believe!

Preachers tend to fabricate preachers tales. If we take that as a fact then Moser gets to conclude that BELIEVING the gospel IS obeying the gospel.  However, we have noted that Moser does not grasp that the GOOD NEWS is made possible by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We MUST obey that "pattern capable of being imitated" or reject that Jesus was bap;tized to fulfill all righteousness or to FILL FULL baptism with His own righteousness as the only event where God pronounces that we are His Child. That agrees with Galatians 3 where the ONLY spiritual covenant was made with Abraham: only by being baptized are we CLOTHED with Christ (Impossible?) and become the Son of Abraham.

K.C. Moser: This is a sample of the logic that is used in concluding that the gospel cannot be obeyed. Can on repent? If not, how can one be saved since repentance is made a condition of salvation? Can one obey the gospel? If not, how can one be saved since obeying the gospel is made a condition of salvation? Do faith and repentance have substitutes? Why contend that obedience to the gospel must have a substitute?

We have shown that a TUPOS can be a direct pattern of a father: Jesus was the IMAGE of God the Father in Heaven.  When we follow the ANTI or Instead of We in ways Moser cannot know to be Crucified, burried and Resurrected with Christ. He was changed and returned to the Father as will all spirit: He received the promised state of Holy Spirit and returned at Pentecost to "shed forth that which you see and hear."

We obey the Gospel as a PATTERN CAPABLE OF BEING IMITATED only at baptism: only those who have OBEYED that exact pattern are then free from sin.  Moser says that BELIEVING the gospel is OBEYING the gospel: any school teacher would correct him quickly.

I see in the position herein examined a fundamental error which a better understanding of the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith would correct. Brethren, for the sake of our souls, let us never get too big to restudy our position.

Common sense understands that the word BELIEVE could never be replaced with the word OBEDIENCE.
