It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever commanded a DAY for worship.
It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever commanded any action by the hands of men as worship.
It is a STRONG DELUSION to claim that Jesus died in vain unable to "supply all that applies to life and godliness."
It is a STRONG DELUSION that God ever authorized ANY FUNDING for any funded STAFF to ride on the backs of widows
It is a STRONG DELUSION to claim that God commanded SINGING with or without a Mechanical Device.
It is a STRONG DELUSION and a LIE that there is a Law of Tithing or a Law of Giving

Holy Scripture is the Last Will and Testament of Jesus. God made Him both Lord and Christ. This New Covenant is defined both inclusively and exclusively in the Prophets.

For God is my witness,
whom I SERVE WITH my SPIRIT [place]
in the GOSPEL of his Son,  [Truth, Word or Logos as Regulative Principle]
        that without ceasing
        I make mention of you always in my prayers;

SERVE g4352. proskuneo, pros-koo-neh´-o; from 4314 and a probable derivative of 2965 (meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master’s hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): — worship.

Revelation 17 defines the end-time Worship of the Babylonian Mother of Harlots. In some cases the Mother of Harlots is male.
Revelation 18 defines her priesthood as Lusted After Fruits: these are also defined in Amos 8.
They are the Locusts or Muses with the SPIRITUS of Apollo or Apollyon. The Muses were known to seek worship for themselves first of all.
The Craftsmen  were any "ministry" person often Theater builders and Stage managers.  Because the Christian School Assembly has NO FUNDING anyone performing WORSHIP with their body were named PARASITES.
They are called SORCERERS named for the original Babylon Mother of Harlots.
Along with "dogs" and liars thes "sorcerers" will be or ARE BEING CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE. Quite unaware, the "Workshops" and gatherings have often called for GOD'S HOLY FIRE TO BE POURED HOUT.

ELAINE HEATH CHAPTER 10 TONGUES OF FIRE.

[159] What we really need today are new tongues of fire, a new Pentecost in American.  This alone will open us to the divine hospitality that is so radical that the walls of gender, race, and class dissolve in its healing reach.  We need a Pentcostal outpouring that is about the love of God, a mighty wind that sweeps away the sinful cast systems that have deformed the Americal Church.  We need a baptism of cleansing that will heal the wounds of domestic violence and sexual abuse, that will liberate both the oppressed and the oppressor, tht will send God's people out of the church into their neighborhoods with God's redeeming and reconciling love....The untamed presence of the living God is the only power that can heal the threefold wound. Nothing else will do.
I am talking about a widespread surrender and obedience to God the Holy Spirit.  Outside of North America, Pentecostalism is the fastest form of Christianity in the World.  It is pan-denominational.

Keith Stanglin claims that the telios or perfection would be UNITY among all believers. All who write about Campbell lie about the concept of unity:

Keith D. Stanglin: Keith asks on Fellowship What is the basis of our fellowship?

What does bind us together,
if not a creed of unity or a figurehead?
It has been an informal, tacit CREED of certain DISTINCTIVE beliefs and practices.
We have talked about and we know many of the practices

Theologians talk about WORSHIP and PRACTICES and do not consider the LETTER of your mother's Bible intelligible unless you pay them.

2 Apollodorus identifies the Argive Apis with the Egyptian bull Apis, who was in turn identified with Serapis (Sarapis). As to the Egyptian Apis, see Hdt. 2.153 (with Wiedemann's note), iii.27, 28. As to Apia as a name for Peloponnese or Argos, see Aesch. Supp. 260ff.; Paus. 2.5.7; Scholiast on Hom. Il. i.22; Tzetzes, Scholiast on Lycophron 177; Stephanus Byzantius, s.v. Apia.

Hdt. 2.153  Psammetichus having made himself master of all Egypt, he made the southern outer court of Hephaestus' temple at Memphis, and built facing this a court for Apis, where Apis is kept and fed whenever he appears; this court has an inner colonnade all around it and many cut figures; the roof is held up by great statues twenty feet high for pillars. Apis in Greek is Epaphus

Hdt. 2.59 The Egyptians hold solemn assemblies not once a year, but often. The principal one of these and the most enthusiastically celebrated is that in honor of Artemis at the town of Bubastis1 , and the next is that in honor of Isis at Busiris. [2] This town is in the middle of the Egyptian Delta, and there is in it a very great temple of Isis, who is Demeter in the Greek language. [3] The third greatest festival is at Saďs in honor of Athena; the fourth is the festival of the sun at Heliopolis, the fifth of Leto at Buto, and the sixth of Ares at Papremis.

The Compulsive practice or AFFIRMATION distinctive is the use of Instrumental Music Worship as the CONDITION of Fellowship.
Rev. 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Rev. 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. [demon]
Rev. 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Rev. 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

Rev. 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
Rev. 18:22 And the VOICE of HARPERS, and MUSICIANS, and of PIPERS, and TRUMPETERS, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no CRAFTSMAN, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
Rev. 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee:
        for thy merchants were the great men of the earth;
for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

NOTES

1 The gnomic poets complain that bad men prosper for a time, but they have faith in the late punishment of the wicked and the final triumph of justice.

2 There is a striking analogy between Plato's language here and the description by Protestant historians of the sale of indulgences by Tetzel in Germany. Rich men's doors is proverbial. Cf. 489 B.

3 Cf. Mill, “Utility of Religion,”Three Essays on Religion, p. 90: “All positive religions aid this self-delusion. Bad religions teach that divine vengeance may be bought off by offerings or personal abasement.” Plato, Laws 885 D, anticipates Mill. With the whole passage compare the scenes at the founding of Cloudcuckootown, Aristophanes Birds 960-990, and more seriously the medieval doctrine of the “treasure of the church” and the Hindu tapas.

Aristophanes Birds 960-990

Chase off drowsy sleep, dear companion. Let the sacred hymn gush from thy divine throat in melodious strains roll forth in soft cadence your refreshing melodies to bewail the fate of Itys, which has been the cause of so many tears to us both. Your pure notes rise through the thick leaves of the yew-tree right up to the throne of Zeus, where Phoebus [Apollo-Abaddon] listens to you, Phoebus with his golden hair. And his ivory lyre responds to your plaintive accents he gathers the choir of the gods and from their immortal lips pours forth a sacred chant of blessed voices.

The flute is played behind the scene, imitating the song of the nightingale.

BEFORE THE BIG LIE THAT REFORMED BAPTISTS WHO BECAME CHURCHES OF CHRIST WERE UNITED WITH THE DISCIPLES-CHRISTIAN DENOMINATION, BOTH CAMPBELL AND STONE DENY IT.

From the Lunenburg Letters [Often quoted, usually MISquoted which is a scholarly habit]

I. With all despatch, then, I hasten to show that I have neither conceded nor surrendered any thing for which I ever contended; but that on the contrary, the opinion now expressed, whether true or false, is one that I have always avowed.

(Footnote in original reads: It is with us as old as baptism for the remission of sins, and this is at least as old as the "Christian Baptist." Read the first two numbers of that work.)

1. Let me ask, in the first place, what could mean all that we have written upon
        the
union of Christians on apostolic grounds,

had we taught that all Christians in the world
were already united in our own community?

2. And in the second place, why should we so often have quoted and applied to apostate Christendom what the Spirit saith to saints in Babylon--
        "
Come out of her, my people, that you partake not of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues"--
had we imagined that the Lord had no people beyond the pale of our communion!

3. But let him that yet doubts, read the following passages from the Christian Baptist, April, 1825:--

"I have no idea of seeing, nor wish to see, the sects unite in one grand army.

This would be dangerous to our liberties and laws. For this the Saviour did not pray.It is only the disciples dispersed among them that reason and benevolence would call out of them, "&c. &c. This looks very like our present opinion of Christians among the sects!!! 2d ed. Bethany, p. 85.

4. Again, speaking of purity of speech in order to the union of Christians, we say,

"None of you [Christians] have ever yet attempted to show how Christians can be united on your principles. You have often showed how they may be divided, and how each party may hold its own, but while you pray for the visible unity of the disciples, and advocate their visible disunity, we cannot understand you." March, 1827, vol. 4

Unfortunately you can be an influential Bible teacher based on teaching packets and tests and never understand the story line which has a clear path from the "Garden of Eden" story to the end-time Restoration Movement by the Babylonian Mother of Harlots.  All professors are the product of other professors with their own agenda and a texbook you can buy: It is a provable fact that the viral attacks on the historic churches of Christ are often supported by quoting some historical writer or writer of their own movement.  I have chased the "quotations" down to the original writer and know of none who has not been misrepresented. Because this twisting has money and influence as the motive that is called lying.  Just as Paul says of the cunning craftsmen or sophists "THEY ARE LYING IN WAIT TO DECEIVE."  Sophists use their own opinions, their own experiences, rhetoric, singing, playing instruments, acting or dancing with gestures.

The mother of her fruity priesthood is the original Mother Goddess of Babylon as SORCERESS: her priesthood in Revelation 18 consists of all religious technicians: speakers, singers or instrument players.  All musical terms and names of instruments are marks of prostitution, warfare, sorcery and burning

Identical to the Spirit OF (a preposition) Christ in the prophets, ALL of the religious craftsmen called Parasites in the literature are REMOVED from the kingdom of God--which does not come with such religious observations--at the same time the LAMPS or the seven spirits resting on the BRANCH [Isaiaih 11] all related to Divine Knowledge are in Isaiah 30 being driven into HELL and in Revelation 19 being CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.

Spirit is always the Spirit OF something or someone: Spirit literally means WIND and only figuratively as God's BREATH.  You can be a "Doctor of the law who takes away the key to knowledge" says Jesus and never be able to see PREPOSITIONS.

It seems clear that the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai was DEMON or bull worship. God turned the Levites over to worship the starry host as a Civil-Military-Clergy wing of the Israelite Nation (and all nations).  Whatever the Monarchy called its "god" they worshipped the astrial deities (sabazianism). The NACC 2013 Victorious is bring in Randy Harris to lead them into COSMIC worship. Pepperdine under Mike Cope is following the same pattern of twisting the Book of Revelation which DEFINES the end-time (now) fall back to the feminist Mother Goddess worship.

Jubal and siblings are defined on clay tablets and using him is PROOF TEXT fails to grasp that when he handled instruments the word means  WITHOUT AUTHORITY and with an always-sexual meaning.

Jubal is the only exception to the well-documented history that INSTRUMENTS were introduced by the Devil--there is no other tradition.  Nimrod became a hunter (that beast thingy) AGAINST God and the literature claims that he led around a musical worship team of women (always) claiming that they could regenerate morals through external means. Modern witchery makes the same claim.  However,  medical science knows that music is a way to grab hold of all of the pleasure centers (all) to introduce that THRILL which the sorcerers sold as proof that GOD was rocking and rolling in their souls.

The Claim that God Commanded worship with instrumental music is a lie. It is a lie because it is false and because it is promoted in order to deceive people and to enhance the career path of false teachers.

The Spirit OF Christ outlawed vocal or instrumental rejoicing or self-speaking for the qahal, synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ (the Rock) beginning in the wilderness after the instrumental fall from grace at Mount Sinia for which there was no redemption

The PATTERNISTS use the Monarchy including King, Kingdom, Temple (mega church) and clergy. Christ in the prophets called them robbers and parasites.

Christ speaks only through the prophets and apostles who were guided into leaving a "memory" for use and marked as a false teacher anyone who IGNORES the command to the elders to teach that which has been taught; and the command of Paul in Romans 15 to use one mine and one mouth to teach "that  which is written for our learning" or Scripture.

A Disciple of Christ is called a LEARNER and not a WORSHIPER in the ceremonial legalists sense.

First Samuel 8: God absolutely abandoned Israel to the KINGS and a Babylonish kingdom.

Burton Coffman's commentary i
s included in this paper denying that God commanded the kingdom or anything connected to it. Christ in the prophets warns against the Lying Pen of the Scribes especially in connection to the not-commanded Temple

"In pagan traditions, musical instruments are invented by gods or demi-gods, such as titans. In the Bible, credit is assigned to antediluvian patriarchs, for example, the descendants of Cain in Genesis 4:21. There is no other biblical tradition about the invention of musical instruments." (Freedman, David Noel, Bible Review, Summer 1985, p. 51).

The Marzeah in Amos 5

"The marzeah had an extremely long history extending at least from the 14th century B.C. through the Roman period. In the 14th century B.C., it was prominently associated with the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra), on the coast of Syria...

The marzeah was a pagan ritual that took the form of a social and religious association... Some scholars regard the funerary marzeah as a feast for--and with--deceased ancestors (or Rephaim, a proper name in the Bible for the inhabitants of Sheol)." (King, Biblical Archaeological Review, Aug, 1988, p. 35, 35)

"These five elements are:
        (1) reclining or relaxing,
        (2) eating a meat meal,
        (3) singing with harp or other musical accompaniment,
        (4) drinking wine and
        (5) anointing oneself with oil." (King, p. 37).

The Spirit of Christ noted:

Isaiah 28:15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death,
        and with hell are we at agreement;
when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge,
and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
Isaiah 28:18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled,
        and your agreement with hell shall not stand;
when the overflowing scourge shall pass through,
then ye shall be trodden down by it.

The Book of The Covenant of Grace was offered to Israel: they refused to listen and demanded a human mediator. Moses said that they would be deaf and blind until "another prophet like me comes.  That had been prophesied by Jacob who cursed the tribe of Levi and demanded that godly people not enter into Covenant with them or attend their assemblies.  They should wait for Shiloah before the Laded Burdens (arousal music) and the Burden Laders had been put down and Shiloah give everyone rest FROM religious rituals.

They fell into musical idolatry which Paul equates to Demon worship.  The command from  God to the Levites was NOT that they should be Musical Worship leaders but that they began by  executing 3000 of their "brethren" idolaters. He assigned  the Levites to stand in ranks ready to execute any godly person (or even Levite) who came near or into any holy place.  Prophesying with instruments is called Soothsaying with instruments: this word is interchanged with the words for SORCERY: the singers, instrument players and all religious teknocrates were called sorcerers (a Babylon connection) and the WILL be cast alive into the lake of fire.

Nadab and Abihu had to go INTO a holy place to burn incense: the PENALTY was the Day of Atonement and imposing the Scapegoat which is the Devil in contemporaneous literature.

See The Sons of God and Daughters of Men and the Jubilees connection

(g) Azael, however, far from repenting, still offers women ornaments and many-colored robes with which to lead men astray.

For this reason, on the Day of Atonement, Israel's sins are heaped on the annual scapegoat; it is then thrown over a cliff to Azazel - as some call Azael.

See Nadab and Abihu. After they rushed into the Holy places and burned incense it was a STRANGE ritual and STRANGE. The word indicates that they repeated one of their ancient pagan rituals.

5. The names of several fallen angels survive only in careless Greek transcriptions of Hebrew or Aramaic originals, which make their meaning doubtful. But "
Azael" does seem to represent "Azazel" ("God strengthens").

Dudael is sometimes translated "God's cauldron," but it is more likely to be a fantastic modification of Beth Hadudo (M. Yoma, VI:8) -

now Harradan, three miles to the south-east of Jerusalem, the Judaean desert cliff from which "the scapegoat for Azazel" fell yearly to its death on the Day of Atonement. (Leviticus XVI:8-10).

When Jesus denied that he was Lord of Food or Lord of healings other than to VALIDATE His Word, the Jews decided that He must be the human Scapegoat:

Luke 4:27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet;
and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
Luke 4:28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
Luke 4:29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city,
and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built,
that they might cast him down headlong.
Luke 4:30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

In the modern celebrations of Jubilee a fundamental element is to define the scapegoat and attempt to "send him away" while the keynoter climbs to the top of the mountain. Catholics claim that the Jubilee has as its fundamental meaning, the Atonement for sin.

The Laws of the Monarchy after the elders fired God were radically changed to include the Levites under the King and Commanders of the Army.   In the 2 Chronicles 29 PATTERN when they actually made instrumental noise (God's word) it was the burning of the Goats which was substituted for the burning of infants with music both before and after Hezekiah's attempt to destroy all of the pagan shrines (denominations) in Jerusalem. The instrumental Levites were never permitted IN any holy building EVEN to carry out the garbage left over by the Assyrians which included "instruments" which undoubtedly included vessels and psalteries.

THIS WAS RISING UP TO PLAY AND THE PLAY OF DAVID WHERE EVERYONE GOT A SHARE OF FOD.

"we recognize the same elements: the sacrifices and libation, the cultic feast in which the congregation gets a share of food and drink after it has been blessed by the king, and the merry-making, now in the form of instrumental and vocal music. But the central act of the ritual, which was performed by the king, is called literally 'drinking' the god (Gurney, O. R. Some Aspects of Hittite Religion, p. 33-34, Oxford University Press, 1977)

"The normal order of events was a meal, followed by a drinking party. Entertainment might include anything from a rhetorcian or philosopher discoursing on some topic, to musical entertainment, to sexual dalliance."

"Plutarch implicitly contrasts a serious dinner featuring a sage as the after-dinner speaker with the other sorts of dinners--where sexual play with the girl flute-players or hetairae was common." (Witherington, Ben, Why Not Idol Meat, Bible Review, June 1994, p. 41-42).

Keith D. Stanglin: Keith asks on Fellowship What is the basis of our fellowship?  What does bind us together, if not a creed of unity or a figurehead?  It has been an informal, tacit creed of certain distinctive beliefs and practices.  We have talked about and we know many of the practices

"TRADITIONAL" Is one of those hate words: you are supposed to think that you continue in a practice which has never fell into instrumental idolatry are evil and destructive.

Keith D. Stanglin Some of the DISTINCTIVE beliefs we have m

entioned.
Many of these are reflected in the traditional slogans.
“Speak where Scripture speaks, be silent where it is silent.
John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me:
        the Father hath not left me alone;
for I DO always those things that PLEASE him.
John 8:30 As he spake these WORDS, many believed on him.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
        IF ye continue in my WORD, THEN are ye my disciples indeed;

  1. The Spirit OF Christ never said just that: He said that if you do not teach the WORD of God THERE IS NO LIGHT IN YOU.
  2. Jesus is the VISIBLE LIGHT or WORD of God.
  3. Jesus commanded that we teach WHAT HE commanded to be taught. A church of Christ by definition is built upon or educated by the Prophets and Apostles: Peter outlawed private interpretation or further expounded.
  4. A Christian by definition is a DISCIPLE by definition a STUDENT: students don't go to religious observations "to which the kingdom does not come."
Keith D. Stanglin Call Bible things by Bible names.”
Jesus exampled and Paul commanded that "we SPEAK that which is written for our learning" including the Psalms written for TEACHING. Those who despise WORDS despise the LOGOS or the Regulative Principle.  When you say that Paul commanded that we SING psalms, hymns and spiritual songs then you are caught in a LIE and that's why we follow direct command.
Keith D. StanglinNo creed but the Bible.”
Jude 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation,
it was needful for me to write unto you,
and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for THE FAITH
which was once delivered unto the saints.
2Pet. 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto
us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Church is A School of Christ (the Campbells) and Worship is READING and MUSING the WORD.
EVERYONE can speak the same things if they "speak that which is written for our LEARNING."
Bathrooms and toilet tissue do not INTEND to replace the WORD with songs and sermons: You can sit in a pew out of the rain and be a STUDENT.
Keith D. Stanglin “No creed but Christ.”
The CREED is the Prophets by the Spirit OF Christ and these prophecies made more certain by Jesus and left for our memory as eye-- and ear-- witnesses.  Jesus fulfilled or certified the prophesies about Him.
He cast the musical minstrels out "like dung" because they were a musical worship team in the Jew's "Covenant with death and hell."

Keith D. Stanglin It seems to ME that, as the legitimacy of these slogans is increasingly called into question, we are losing this identity.  What, then, will be the basis for our union in the future?  A sign out front?

The false teachers are self-exhalted thinking that a few congregations which THEY have helped subvert represents the Church of Christ: He is still the only teacher:
Jesus does not pray for the world, kosmos or the masses of the ECUMENICAL the reign of Satan.
Jesus collected a SECT that is called the WAY: the road is narrow and fools cannot even stumble into it. FEE find their way.

In Bible 101a we learned that God gave workers a day of REST: that was EXCLUSIVE in the synagogue  as "vocal or instrumental rejoicing or speaking your own words."  The REST day includes the concept of SKHOLE where workers refresh themselves by reading and learning the Word of God. The synagogue had no clergy as A Church of Christ is devoid of LADED BURDENS or BURDEN LADERS. The Lord's Supper teaches the DEATH of Jesus which silences all godly disciples commanded to teach that which has been taught.  Anything added to that becomes a CULT controlled by a class of Priests and Levites who are by definition EXCLUDED in spiritual covenants made ONLY with the family or LAITY.

I am not sure who invented this oft-repeated bit of judgmentalism.

To the law and to the testimony:
if they speak not according to this word,

Apostolic Succession meant that every new elder makes certain that the Word is not changed. An Apostolic Church was based on the Word as it was perfected to provide all that we need for life and godliness. Historically the rule of Commands, Examples and Inferences was ENOUGH for those who understood the meaning of a Disciple of Christ.

Click Commands Examples Inferences

> For I spake NOT unto your fathers, nor commanded them
in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,
concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: Jeremiah 7:22
> But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:

God is God and He asserts: He does not have to list all of the things one MIGHT add once God turned them over to worship the starry host BECAUSE of instrumental-trinitarian idolatry:
Keith D. Stanglin Says. Autonomous congregational leadership.  There is a freedom for churches to follow their own conscience with respect to God’s Word.

Autonomous forbidden for the women was to refute the absolute:

1Tim. 2:5 For there is ONE GOD
and one mediator between God and men,
        the MAN Christ Jesus;

1Cor. 8:6 But to us there is but ONE GOD [Theos], the Father,
        of whom are all things, and we in him;
and ONE LORD [kurios]Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

God says that His is not a MAN nor the SON of Man
God is Holy or WHOLLY Spirit
Jesus said that God does not have flesh and bones.
Jesus said that He had flesh and bones.
Therefore, trinitarians who say that Jesus WAS God are called ANTICHRISTS.

1John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not
that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God:
and this is that spirit of ANTICHRIST,
whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Those guided by the Spirit OF ANTICHRIST or musicians LEAD by APOLLON-ABADDON always called God a liar.

Bu
t God said over and over:

> But they HEARKENED NOT, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward, and not forward. Jeremiah 7:24

Thus saith the Lord, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah,
and the great pride of Jerusalem. Jer 13:9
This evil people, which refuse to hear my words,
........which walk in the imagination of their heart, [twisted]
........and walk after other gods, to serve them,

Jer 23:16 Thus saith the Lord of hosts,
        Hearken not unto the words of the PROPHETS that prophesy unto you;
        they make you vain:
they speak a vision of their own heart,
and not out of the mouth of the Lord.

BLASPHEMY is saying that God commanded something or His Word does nor matter

Plat. Laws 7.800d [800d] but often quite close to them;
and then they let out a flood of blasphemy over the sacred offerings,
racking the souls of their audience with words, rhythms and tunes most dolorous,
and the man that succeeds at once in drawing most tears from the sacrificing city
carries off the palm of victory.

Must we not reject [note] such a custom as this? For if it is ever really necessary that the citizens should listen to such doleful strains,
it would be more fitting that the choirs that attend should be hired from abroad,
and that not on holy days but only on fast-days—

[note] Music should he used as an ennobling educational instrument, promoting self-control, not as a means of exciting vulgar sentiment and passion.

The Stone Christian Church began saying that UNITY would never discuss doctrinal teaching: sweet but not to be.  Jesus defines unity in John 17.  The Father (thins) and breaths (Spirit) and the Son (Word) articulates God's thoughts. Unity is them based on letting the Word alone and follow the command to PREACH it by READING it for comfort and doctrine.  When people replace that which is written and sing it which violates the LOGOS idea then they cannot insist that everyone have UNITY with them. The original law of silence meant that if Walker (Disciple) gets an insight then this becomes the word of Christ and eveyone should obey that word: if not they they are sowing discord.

One of the taunt songs against Churches of Christ is 'you are an increasingly dimininishing sign out front.' That is part of the change agenda begun by long stretches of sermons trying to dissociate people by comparing them to "bombers of abortiong clinics" or "muggers of ladies wearing fur coats."  Rubel Shelly set the Pattern which has been followed.
The Spirit of Christ, the practice of the godly people in the synagogue from the wilderness onward, the example of Jesus, the command using the "ekklesia" or "synagogue" terms, the practices and commands of the Apostles and the historic Church of Christ for centuries led the Campbells to say that:

Church is A School of Christ
Worship is Reading and Musing the Word

Paul defines the ONE PIECE PATTERN SO OFTEN that the never musical passages follow even the pattern of David.  Congregations were defined by the Campbell's as "societies" for local Bible School. That as commanded by Paul in Romans 14 insisted that doubtful disputations or private opinions be left at home.  There is no need to prove one's superiority by "fellowshiping" them to prove that they  are ok.  Fellowship is a preachers turf word but then Preaching is not a command either.  Alexander Campbell thought it had been repudiated in place of teaching the Word.
  1. We are to SPEAK (opposite of poetry or music) The Word of Christ (Spirit in John 6:63)
  2. The singing and melody (both enchantment or sorcery words) is IN the heart.
  3. With GRACE in the Heart means with the "effects" of the spoken Word in the heart.
  4. Proof? Singing as an ACT was imposed as late as ad 373 after unwashed pagans became Bishops. That split the East and West churches.
  5. Proof? The command is to speak "that which is written for our learning." NOTHING that is "written" is metrical: you cannot sing it tunefully if your life depends on it.
  6. Congregational singing began in the confiscated Cathedrals which (rarely) had a pipe organ. The Cathedrals were controlled by the state and used for musical performances.  Calvin reluctantly permitted some Psalms (only) to be set to simple meter to be sung in unison (only).
  7. The Disciples rooted in the Methodists or Anglican tradition (O'Kelley) build large buildings out of carpetbags and ran into trouble paying the bills.
  8. They first tried to justify the deliberate sowing of discord by offering up the PSALLO word in 1878 which has no musical content and just means  plucking with your fingers but NEVER with a plectrum.
  9. The Campbells built upon the call of John Calvin to Restore the Church of Christ by removing anything that hindered the Word.
1890 CHRISTIAN STANDARD PROMOTES A NATIONAL CONVENTION IN TENNESSEE
In 1890 the first convention was called at Chattanooga to organize the state society. The only churches in the state of Tennessee were those who had already adopted the organ in their worship. The Christian Standard pumped up the news and "it is reported that the brethren in Nashville, Tennessee are desirous of entertaining our National Convention next year."

This of course was just two congregations. A survey showed that out of 2500 members in Nashville, less than one hundred wanted the society.
Lipscomb noted that among the Society people "the Bible is as popular as last year's almanac."

"The supporters of the missionary society organized the Tennessee State Missionary Convention on October 6, 1890, with one purpose in mind, as stated by J. H. Garrison. He said at that time:

"We will take Tennessee for organized mission work...within five years."

A. I. Myhr was dispatched to Tennessee to head the new state society despite the protestation of David Lipscomb that Tennessee was not a destitute mission territory. Myhr and his supporters moved resolutely ahead to accomplish their mission.

"Their efforts met with some success and the intent was clear. Myhr was aggressive and abrasive in his operations. His actions were of such a nature, in promoting the missionary society, that he came under the direct attack of E. G. Sewel and David Lipscomb. And as later event proved, Myhr was no match for Lipscomb and the Gospel Advocate.
1890 The Plan:   Again "We will take Tennessee for organized mission work...within five years."
Why would anyone ENDORSE and accept pay from those always on a hostile path?
Myhr made his goals clear about promoting the Society and Instrumental music
even though it would divide the churches. Myhr's goal, Lipscome believed, was to
"ostracize, boycott, and starve every preacher that does not APPROVE the society."
1901  Instruments of Music in the Service of God By David Lipscomb

Instruments had been added into the Disciples of Christ--Chrisitian Churches. In time the determination was to "take Tenneessee for the organ and society party within five years."  That is proof that churches of Christ in Tennessee did not belong to the Stone-Campbell and God wants people to stop lying to "take Tennessee a hundred years later."

When the church determines to introduce a service not required by God,
he who believes it wrong is compelled to refuse in any way
to countenance or affiliate with the wrong.
Sometimes when a part of a church insists on and adopts the wrong,

had I not better yield than to create division in the church?
A church that requires disobedience to God to maintain peace in it is already an apostate church; it has rejected God as it only Ruler.

While forbearance and love should be exercised in seeking to show them the right and persuading them to do it, it is sinful to so affiliate with them as to encourage and build up a church that is going wrong.
There is no reason to FELLOWSHIP people who continue their 100 plus history twisting all of the Bible and recorded history  meaning WE can have fellowship if WE cut off one limb at a time.

PSALLO is the UNIVERSAL Mark of heresy or sectarianism.  I have posted a quick paper on two forms of Psallo and a Christian is not going to want to do anything than when it is use as a METAPHOR for singing or "shooting forth a hymn."

Psallo , i, 3, v. n., = psallō. I. In gen., to play upon a stringed instrument; esp., to play upon the cithara, to sing TO the cithara: “psallere saltare elegantius,

Singing TO a harp means to pluck a single string then match your voice to the string. Try it.

Dwayne E. Dunning There are at least three ways to kill a tree.

You can poison it, or burn it. It might not survive if all the limbs were lopped off.
But men usually choose to kill a tree by cutting down its trunk
.
We take an axe or saw to it not far above the roots and "fell" that tree.

Likewise a system of doctrine may be destroyed in various ways. It might be poisoned (or sweetened in this case) by injecting a different spirit into those who hold the doctrine.

Or its various contentions may be individually or specifically refuted,
like lopping off a tree's branches one by one.

A. Ralph Johnson: A Word of Caution

One difficulty with writing is, to accurately convey feelings. It is also difficult, when a subject affects millions of people in different ways, to speak to the needs of each without leaving others feeling pained that they have been lumped with the "bad guys." In citing arguments made against instrumental, I do not wish to imply that all anti-instrumentalists hold to all of them.

I recognize that most anti-instrumentalists are wise enough to reject many of the really outrageous ones. I do not wish to blame all for the folly of a few.

Permit me also to explain that I use the term, "anti-instrumental" rather than "non-instrumental" or "a cappella brethren," because those two terms fail to fully express the essence of our situation.
There are many who by preference, circumstance,
or for other reasons, do not use instrumental music
but do NOT believe that it is sinful.
One MAY by choice sing a-cappella.

Note: "we will let you live, move and have your facts."

By "anti-instrumental" I mean those
opposed to religious use of instrumental music, as sinful.

I have no problem with those who simply PREFER to sing unaccompanied.

That is aimed at the Spirit OF Christ in the prophets, the practices of Jesus, the command of Jesus to teach what HE commanded to be taught, the teachings of especially Peter and Paul and recorded history before after the Reformation.

A Cappella Singing

Keith D. Stanglin

Instrumental music is a subject that is important in its own right.  It is a hot button issue, indicative of the worship wars going on in many churches.  It currently occupies the minds of many in our churches—churches which have been a cappella, or non-instrumental, for these two centuries.

The Church of Christ is defined as the ekklesia or synagogue of the ROCK in the wilderness. After Israel fell into musical idolatry the Jacob-cursed and now God-abandoned Levites led the "worship of the starry host" or COSMIC worship being performed this year both at PEPPERDINE teamed with the NACC.  Vocal or instrumental rejoicing was EXCLUDED because the only purpose for a church guided by the Spirit OF CHRIST in the prophets and apostles was to Rest, Read and Rehearse the Word of God only quarantined FROM the sacrificial system which God did not command.  The Church of Christ under that name has existed in every generation and never engaged in either Vocal or Instrumental rejoicing.  Rooted in the Presbyterian church there was no organ (only they promised) until the Scotland State Church was organized equivalent to the Anglican or Church of England: Christian churches are rooted out of O'Kelly and the Methodist-Anglicans.

Therefore, it is a fact that A Church of Christ as an Ekklesia HAS NEVER and WILL NEVER used instruments.  The tiny number of diverted churches by closet Christian Church agents are quick to remove CHRIST from their public Confession.  In Revelation 18 John assures us that when you hear the self-speakers, singers, instrument players and craftsmen (theater builders and stage managers) it the mark that Jesus has been there and the LAMPS (seven spirits of truth) HAS been removed: the next stage is being cast alive into the Lake of Fire. The Spirit OF Christ had the Prophetic Type delivered in Isaiah 30: the marks in sight and sound of God driving His enemies into "hell" are the wind, string and percussion instruments.  See the "theology" of the Spirit (mind) of Christ.

Keith D. Stanglin But now some of our churches are introducing the instrument.  There are meetings between the Churches of Christ and the Christian churches about REuniting.

Students need to understand that repeating something a thousand times does not make it true: we can understand why people believe that the Christian Churches and what became churches of Christ were once UNITITED  and Churches of Christ becamse a sectarian (heretical) division from the Christian Church. However, that is a lie calculated to send silly preachers on a Guilt Trip always intending that Churches of Christ become Christian Churches and use instruments and as they say USE women.

Alexander Campbell was part of the Reformed Baptists although the Baptists failed to grasp that Campbell believed that baptism was for or in order to the remission of sins.  The Disciples of Christ was more organized and under Barton W. Stone were called the Christian Church which Stone always made a term of "union" which never happened.  The Stoneites urged "union" but on his terms: at that time Stone and Campbell agreed on nothing but the nicety of "unionism." Campbell understood that to mean that you needed a Creed as well as suffer Stone's "squinting" that the Reformers had come over to the Christians.

Before the year 1832 Alexander Campbell denied there could be any union with the Stoneites. Further, he denied the desirablility of anything beyond local congregations.

In 1832 a few men agreed that they could "work together." At that time it was pretty easy because none of the churches of the wild frontier had never and promised that they could not see a role for the organ (only!) in what the Campbells called A School of Christ. The Disciples violated that agreement before the ink was dry. John Smith's Grandson wrote of this unity plot.

H. Leo Boles notes that any friendly contact existed when the Disciples fell into the Millerite or Premillennial Plot to ORGANIZE and go save the Jews to ENABLE Christ to come in 1843-4.

After 1837 both Stone and Campbell denied that there could be any unity meaning a denomination because they still agreed on almost nothing.

THE 1832 UNITY MEETING J.F.BURNETT Stone and the Disciples of Christ (Reformers then)

"Then followed a wave of ' Campbellism ' that swept the Christians off their feet, and aggregated about eight thousand accessions to the Disciples. No Christian churches long survived in Tennessee, their cause was ruined in Kentucky and never has regained its former strength or prestige. Of the Southern Ohio Christians a majority of the preachers embraced Campbeism prior to 1837, and only about one thousand church members remained. A man named C. A. Eastman, traveling through Indiana about 1846, reported that, 'In many places they [the Christians] have amalgamated with the Disciples, and are known only as the same people.' Several years later it was reported that on Stone's account conferences of the Christians had been dissolved and churches disbanded, and the people had become amalgamated with the Disciples."
ALL Pseudo-unity movements have an unnatural need to RECAPTURE that which they lost in UNITY.
1845  The Restoration Movement History: John T. Brown in his history of "Churches of Christ," p. 153, says:
So, according to David S. Burnet, "the father of organized, cooperative work among the disciples of Christ," the resolution to urge the society on the Brethren originated in the sickroom in 1845, in the mind of David S. Burnet, but was not put into execution until four years later, 1849.
In 1843 the Disciples followed the Millerites or modern SDA Click
This is evidenced in the decisions concerning missionaries growing out of this fervor leading up to the Cincinnati convention: Dr. and Mrs. James T. Barclay were the first. It was in their parlor in Washington, D.C., 1843, that the congregation had been organized which became the Vermont Avenue Church and in 1930 the National City Christian Church.

They went to Jerusalem, not because of Acts 1:8 "beginning with Jerusalem" as a popular Disciples legend has it, but because it was taken for granted by Alexander Campbell and his followers that the Jews were to be converted before the return of Christ.

The Disciples followed the Millerites: not Campbell.

nor from the pragmatism which required a foreign dimension to keep pace with other denominations or to outgrow them! D.S. Burnet's book The Jerusalem Mission and Dr. Barclay's book The City of the Great King make this clear, along with speeches and articles by various leaders like Isaac Errett. Barclay wrote in a journal The Christian Age:

"The ACMS...resolved...
to make the first offer of salvation to Israel. . .
for the salvation of the Jews...
for upon the conversion and resumption of Israel

Turns out that the Jews didn't need any salvation by trinitarians
Campbell used Millennial Harbinger to REFUTE the Disciples of Christ--Christian Churches

RICHARD HUGHES MAKES THIS FALSE ASSUMPTION that Churches of Christ should RESTORE the teachings of Campbell.  However, he is not a careful reader:

Notice that Campbell spoke of THE PROTESTANT THEORY: not his because he speaks where the Bible speaks and insists on a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH and that you could not convert people after the literal earth was burned up.

The Second Coming Alexander Campbell

In the Millennial Harbinger of 1841,
we read in what is called The Protestant Theory:
Meaning THEY SAY THAT: "The Millennium, so far as the triumphs of Christianity is concerned, will be a state of greatly enlarged and continuous prosperity, in which the Lord will be exalted and his divine spirit enjoyed in an unprecedented measure. All the conditions of society will be vastly improved; wars shall cease, and peace and good will among men will generally abound. The Jews will be converted, and the fullness of the Gentiles will be brought into the kingdom of the Messiah."

Keith D. Stanglin: I have heard adults and youth at this church asking about this issue.  So, it is an important issue, and where we come down on this issue will say something about our attitude toward worship in general.

Jesus said that the Kingdom of God does not come with OBSERVATION because the Kingdom is WITHIN you.  This means WORSHIP SERVICES which always believe that they can work REALLY hard (musical instruments are machines for doing HARD WORK) and show God that they deserve His "bestowal of fertility."

The Israelites resumed their old Egyptian idolatry and musically worshipped the Egyptian trinity represented by Apis a real bull calf in Egypt and the golden Calf(s) at Mount Sinai.  Because they refused to listen to God but demanded a human mediator they followed SILENCE because they missed what Moses recorded in Ezekiel 33 which outlawed any kind of mental disturbance on the Rest day.  In Exodus 18 Moses had been told how to organize sub groups down to as few as ten households.  The elders were to TEACH whatever was conveyed to them through Moses or Aaron. This would have been the testimony or the only spiritual covenant made with God in Christ to Abraham.

Exodus 31 Rough Notes: the SILENCE the people REFUSED to hear.
Exodus 32 They Rose up to Play: This was their WORK   where "religion" and "sexuality" are always bonded at the lips.

Ephraim Syrus notes of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai:

19. But when Moses came down, he saw their heathenism revelling in the wide plain with drums and cymbals.

Speedily, he put their madness to shame by means of the Levites and drawn swords. So likewise here, our Lord concealed His knowledge for a little when the sinful woman approached Him, that the Pharisee might form into shape his thought,as his fathers had shaped the pernicious calf.

This musical idolatry MARKED the people so that the avenging Levites knew whom to slay:

For the sons of Levi ran upon them, those who ran to [help] Moses and girded on their swords. [Exod. xxxii. 26, 27, 28.]

For the sons of Levi did not know whom they should slay, because those that worshipped were mingled with those that worshipped not.

But He, for Whom it was easy to distinguish, distinguished (MARKED) those who were defiled from those who were not defiled;

so that the innocent might give thanks that their innocence had not passed [unseen by] the Just One; and the guilty might be convicted that their offence had not escaped [the eye of] the Judge.

But the sons of Levi were the open avengers. Accordingly Moses set a mark upon the offenders, that it might be easy for the avengers to avenge.

For the draught of the calf entered those in whom the love of the calf was dwelling, and displayed in them a manifest sign, that the drawn sword might rush upon them. The congregation therefore which had committed fornication in [the worship of] the calf, he caused to drink of the water of ordeal, that the mark of adulteresses might appear in it.

Deuteronomy 32 They Rose up to Play

1 Corinthians 10 They sat Down to Eat and Rose Up To Play
Paul told us not to engage in DEMON worship.

Following the "law of Silence" they engaged in musical idolatry.  The command God gave to the Jacob-cursed and God-abandoned Levites was first to EXECUTE 3,000 of their brethren who had enagaged in Instrumental Idolatry.

Keith D. Stanglin:  One thing before we get started.  When I say, “Instrumental music,” I mean instrumental music in the worship assembly.  In other words, I’m not talking about instruments with secular music, or even instruments with sacred music outside of the gathering of the local church for worship.  To use the phrase Paul used, the setting of this issue is “in the assembly.”

Let me ask two questions.  The first one is just for you to think about.  How would you defend a cappella music in the church?

You might answer "There is no command, example or remote inference of any godly group called OUT of their REST for congregational singing with or without instruments until after the Reformation."  Or: The command is to use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our learning. And none of that which is written is metrical. Therefore, it is impossible to sing silly praise ditties with or without instruments.

You might say that ACappella is a steal word from "a cappella" and that was not congregational singing: the Pope brought castrated Opera singers from France into the Sistine Chapel. Chapel is from Caper and Caper was a Goat-skin army chapel.  Cappella was constellation consistent with worshiping the STARS which includes "an illustrous person we can worship instead of being Disciples of Christ.

Keith D. Stanglin: If someone were to ask you why we don’t use instruments, what would you say?  Do you have a hard time?  Do you need help?  Would you be convinced if you were in the other person’s shoes?  Many of you have probably been asked this, because it is such an obvious feature of our worship.  So think about it for a moment.  I’m going to attempt to offer some answers.

Most of the students were caused to "hunger and thirst for the Word" and fell into captivity (Amos 8;  Isaiah 5). Children do not know that parents and elders have spiritually abused them and molested them. Speaking for all of those quite devoid of Bible knowledge and human ethics which have FORCED unity following the pattern of "Cutting off one limb at a time."

The NACC was finally DEsected during the Disciples Restructure in 1968: I remember a family member as preacher for an independent Christian church mentioning the troubles.  In 1971 the Disciples DElisted the NACC as they were forbidden to LIST Churches of Christ in Tennesse in the 1906 census.  That was when Leroy Garrett began his "masked man" role as Campus Minister trying to seduce young preachers. That was the beginning of the Stone-Campbell Movement. This was a LIE but it has been used by the NACC to try to "cut off one limb at a time" and sow massive discored to steal the property of Widows and Hard working people as Rick Atchley boasted.

Rick Atchley: The era of the progressive Church of Christ is over.

Step One: Back in the 80’s you could go to any major city, especially in the South, and you could find a progressive Church of Christ — and if they would preach grace, and if they would put words on a screen, and if they would let divorced people place membership, they would grow.

Step Two: The generation of Boomers has enough denominational loyalty that they’re going to find the least legalistic

Step Three: Well, we discipled the children of those progressive churches
for a whole generation to grow past us Boomers.
They never heard the sermons we heard.
They never heard the rationale for a cappella music.

Step Four: We sent them to youth rallies and Church of Christ events

with some of the finest Christian bands in the world.

Frogs fully boiled:   We discipled our children to leave our Movement!

Keith D. Stanglin: Another question we’ll be addressing: Is this distinctive feature worth defending?  Is a cappella worship that important?

People should teach that which has been taught and not fiddle with the Heglian Dialectic. People really perform too well when they play Devil's Advocate.  Jesus said that the Sons of the Devil speak on their own. Christians are commanded NOT to speak their own words by Christ in Prophecy.

Paul repeated the Direct command in Isaiah 58 in Romans 14-15

The Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness worship is defined exclusively as giving heed to God by giving heed to His Word through prophetic repudiation of the Sacrificial syste.  In the New testament "coming together, assemblying or gathering together" is never called a worship assembly. Worship where you can see, hear or smell it is called religious OBSERVATIONS: Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is within us  and it does not come with observation.

Keith D. Stanglin: If we search for answers to this question among our own fellowship, we might end up more confused.  Because we have all ranges of opinions out there.  Many of these people will not listen to one another.  And who knows?  We may have all ranges of opinions represented in here.

One might search the Scriptures daily: add the definition of Words in something better than a McGuffy Lexicon and READ the Greek and Latin Texts to see who men who sang and played instruments are said to be Drunk, perverted or just having fun or mocking."

Keith D. Stanglin: For example, many think that not only is instrumental music wrong, but that it is the arch-heresy.  These people have no doubt that it is a salvation issue on par with the necessity of baptism, and they are quick to condemn those who do it.  Jonathan Clark goes so far to say that “the actual inventor of musical instruments is satan.” (at http://quietearth.freeyellow.com/page56.html).

  1. After the fall into instrumental-idolatry at Mount Sinai God turned the nation over to worship the starry host.
  2. Jacob had long ago cursed the Levites and commanded that no one attend their synagogues nor enter into their covenant: a covenant with death and hell.
  3. The Church of Christ (the ROCK) was defined both inclusively and exclusively to EXCLUDE "vocal or instrumental rejoicing or rhetoric." Jesus will define these as the HYPOCRITIC marks of the Scribes and Pharisees.
  4. That never changed: there is no command, example or remote inference of God calling His people out of His REST to singing as a group with or without instruments.
  5. From the "serpent" in the garden of Eden ownward, instruments are marked as SORCERY because it attemp;ts to silence the voice of the victim and is always associated with BURNING.

See our Review of Jonathan Clark who has noted the 666 message when Daniel and other youth were commanded to BOW down when they heard the sound of all of those musical instruments.  Jonathan speaks from a Reformed education and John Calvin called for a Restoration of the Church of Christ.  There was never any doctrinal connection between the Disciples and the REFORMED disciples who called themselves Reformed Baptists.

That's what the Spirit OF Christ said in the Prophets

Apharat Demonstration VI

"The serpent-charmers usual instrument is the flute. Those who professed the art of taming serpents were called by the Hebrews menachashim, while the art itself was called lachash , (Jer 8:17; Ecc 10:11)" Smith's Dictionary, Serpent.

Lachash (h3908) lakh'-ash; from 3907; prop. a whisper, i. e. by impl. (in a good sense) a private prayer, (in a bad one) an incantation; concr. an amulet: - charmed, earring, enchantment, orator, prayer.

"There are some serpents which defy all of the attempts of the charmer: in the language of Scripture such individuals may be termed deaf. The point of the rebuke consists in the fact that the pethen was capable of hearing the charmer's song, but refused to do so. Serpents, though comparitively speaking deaf to ordinary sounds, are no doubt capable of hearing the sharp, shrill sound which the charmer produces either by his voice or by an instrument." (Smith's Dict. Asp)

"The necromancer or soothsayer gained their power through magical incantations. The sound of brass, pipe or string imitated the music of the seven heavenly spheres. As a result,

the gods were forced to give material and sensual blessings." Enuma Elish III.101; IV. 1-26, 91 and other Near Eastern Manuscripts.

"The main function of music in the early times of biblical history were social merrymaking, marital noisemaking, magic incantation, and worship. Merry-making in particular was the main function of music during the age of patriarchs and judges (e.G. Gen. 31:27; Exod. 32:17-18; Judg. 11:34-35), sometimes even licentiously practiced (e.G., Isa. 23:16). (The Int. Std. Bible Dict., p. 457).

'Certain members of a tribe, marked out either by unusual skills or by some emotional (or sexually) abnormality, ususally became particularly adept at these operations, and gradually assumed specialized functions.

Released from the duty of hunting, and concentrating on the practice of magic, the shaman, sorcerer, or medicine man was the world's first professional." (H. B. Parkes, Men and Gods, p. 29).

ONE HAND Keith D. Stanglin: : So you can imagine what he thinks about those who use instruments.  Maybe some of you would agree.  I do not.  If Satan invented something which can produce such true, aesthetic beauty, it must have been before his fall.  A little later,
I will tell you why we must be cautious about condemning people who use instrumental music.

Fine, let's God from Genesis to Revelation do the judging for us.  God hates music in the holy places (Amos 8) and He will turning their singing into HOWLING (CCM).  He identifies the religious fleecers as "baskets of summer fruits." These were the same CATEMITES who prowled around Jerusalem and all  Worship Centers.  In Revelation the FRUITS are priests of the Babylon Mother of Harlots: they are any and all religious craftsmen (God gave them no role and no dole): speakers, singers, instrument players: the sounds of the millstone points to grinders as prostitutes who made a "piping sound" to attract customers. Jesus through John calls the SORCERERS (a term applied to the first Babylon Harlot) and says they WILL be CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE. God also HATES people who sow discord. This in Amos and in Revelation is the mark that "God has been there and will never pass by again." That is when the fruits and lamps are quickly forced to remove CHRIST from their sign out front and their vocabulary.

Lucifer whom Christ calls the singing and harp-playing prostitute brought wind, string and percussion instruments into the garden of Eden.

Christ in Isaiah 30 defined wind, string and percussion instruments as the MARKS of God driving His enemies into HELL.

There is very little interest in condemning people who use instruments. The problem from the birthing of the Christian Church in 1927 through 1971 is that they have made it their major evangelistic effort so-called unity meetings where they come prepared with a white paper listing all of the mentions of an "instrument" and insisting that if WE want to have UNITY with them we have to STOP warning people about what they call "infiltrating and diverting" a church to impose instruments.

That speaks of stroking ALL of the pleasure centers: it was always called sorcery or witchcraft in the Bible and Greek and Latin literature. That is because it uses MIND CONTROL to force people to believe a lie just because they experienced a real or virtual coming of the Spirit (double entendra still promoted by the Vineyard or Wineskinners). John warns against the Babylon Mother of Harlots (Revelation). In chapter 18 she USES "lusted after FRUITS" (Same as in Amos) as speakers, singers and instrument players.  John calls them SORCERERS identifying the Babylonian sorceress who HAD deceived the whole world in the BEGINNING TIMES.  Music promoters KNOW that they are setting up a STAGE SHOW so that people will think that sexual stimulation is WORSHIP: they will surely come back for more unto a better "theater for holy entertainment" is built on the other corner.

"For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape." (1 Thessalonians 5:1,2).

[Witchcraft is a sin in its own nature exceedingly heinous; it is giving that honour to the devil which is due to God only, making God's enemy our guide and the father of lies our oracle. In Babylon it was a national sin, and had the protection and countenance of the government; conjurors, for aught that appears, were their privy counsellors and prime ministers of state. And shall not God visit for these things? Observe what a multitude, what a great abundance, of sorceries and enchantments there were among them. Such a bewitching sin this was that when it was once admitted it spread like wildfire, and they never knew any end of it; the deceived and the deceivers both increased strangely.] - Matthew Henry.

Strabo Geography [10.3.9] "But I must now investigate how it comes about that so many names have been used of one and the same thing, and the theological element contained in their history.

Now this is common both to the Greeks and to the barbarians,

to perform their sacred rites in connection with the relaxation of a festival,
these rites being performed sometimes with
religious frenzy, sometimes without it;sometimes with music, sometimes not; and sometimes in secret, sometimes openly.

And it is in accordance with the dictates of nature that this should be so, for, in the

first place, the relaxation draws the mind away from human occupations and turns the real mind towards that which is divine; and,

secondly, the religious frenzy seems to afford a kind of divine inspiration and to be very like that of the soothsayer; and,

thirdly, the secrecy with which the sacred rites are concealed induces reverence for the divine, since it imitates the nature of the divine,

which is to avoid being perceived by our human senses; and,

fourthly, music, which includes dancing as well as rhythm and melody,

at the same time, by the delight it affords and by its artistic beauty,

brings us in touch with the divine, and this for the following reason;

for although it has been well said that human beings then act most like the gods when they are doing good to others,

yet one might better say, when they are happy; and such happiness consists of rejoicing, celebrating festivals, pursuing philosophy, and engaging in music;

ON THE OTHER HAND Keith D. Stanglin: :, others think that it is a non-issue, and should be left to each individual or church, analogous to the 1st cent. issue of eating meat offered to idols.  Tim Woodroof, in his book called A Church that Flies,
puts the issue of instrumental music in the same category
as “hand-clapping, the building of family life centers, translations of the Bible” (p. 122).

Tim PROMOTES instrumental music knowing that it is sowing massive discord.  However, if you are a reader of Paul in 1 Corinthians 10 he equated the "rising up to play" after sitting down to EAT to demons:

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

"We know that all of the Israelites brought Egyptian gods and practices with them and it is not far-fetched to think that Miriam, who had not yet been exposed to the Covenant, was part of the consciousness-altering rhythms and which was part of a priestly myth-play brought to destructive consummation at Mount Sinai as the golden calf was called back into action.

This "rising up to play" involved eating, drinking, nakedness and musical worship. The goddess, Hathor, is the best candidate for the Mother Goddess of the Mount Sinai idolatry. Here priestessess or prophetesses were highly trained with musical instruments, cultic songs and be able to join in the religious dance.

"Music and drugs were co-consiprators in religious ecstasy. They may have used some product of the sycamore fig which both intoxicated and induced an altered state of consciousness. The ergo of barley was well known. Anton Marks

"They sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. They practiced rites in which they made themselves naked, perhaps similar to those which were carried out by naked Babylonian priests." (Woodrow, p. 158)

"In the New Testament there is nowhere any emphasis laid on the musical form of the hymns; and in particular none on instrumental accompaniment whereas this is significantly paganism." (Delling, Gerhard, Worship in the New Testament, trans. Percy Scott Phil. Westminster press, 1962, p. 86).

Appendix to Hippolytus XLVI.

For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and ye visited me not: I was in prison, and ye came not unto me.
I made your ears that ye might hear the Scriptures;
and ye prepared them for the songs of demons, and lyres, and jesting.

I made your eyes that you might see the light of my commandments, and keep them; and ye called in fornication and wantonness, and opened them to all other manner of uncleanness.

I prepared your mouth for the utterance of adoration, and praise, and psalms, and spiritual odes,

and for the exercise of continuous reading;
and ye fitted it to railing, and swearing, and blasphemies, while ye sat and spoke evil of your neighbours.

I made your hands that ye might stretch them forth in prayers and supplications, and ye put them forth to robberies, and murders, and the killing of each other. I ordained your feet to walk in the preparation of the Gospel of peace, both in the churches and the houses of my saints; and ye taught them to run to adulteries, and fornications, and theatres, and dancings, and elevations.135

Keith D. Stanglin:  Maybe some of you would agree they belong together.  I do not.  A little later, you will see that a quick glance at two thousand years of church history testifies that this issue has meant more than the color of the carpet.  I would argue that if it has divided and still does divide the church, no matter what the issue is, it for that very reason an important issue.

But if you do agree with either of these two opposite opinions, then I have a tough job, because I’m somewhere in between them.  I say there are many reasons why we should continue to practice, teach, and defend a cappella worship in the assembly.  These reasons fall into two large categories.

I. Biblical/Theological Reasons. (4 of these)

Keith D. Stanglin: First, it is noteworthy that the NT talks about singing praises to God, but is silent about instruments in the church’s worship (1 Cor. 14:15; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16).  Now, we can debate what the silence means exactly.  Some think it means instruments are ok because it doesn’t say you can’t use them.  But we can’t apply that principle across the board, because then we would be allowed to do many things not forbidden in Scripture.  That doesn’t seem right.

The word SPEAK is commanded for "that which is written for our learning."
The commanded method (Romans 15) is to use ONE mind and ONE mouth to speak that which is written for our learning.
ODE and PSALLO are commanded to be in th heart which in 1 Corinthians 14 means SILENT.
Speak or LEXIS is the opposite of ODE.  No one sings AND plays instruments in what is callled REST or SKHOLE.

ALL OF GOD'S MESSAGE IS TO BE SPOKEN
1Pet. 4:11 If any man SPEAK, let him speak as the oracles of God;
if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:
that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Continuing the abandonment of the Jews they MUSICALLY MOCKED Jesus to the Cross: this is prophesied in several psalms and OUTLAWED by Christ in the prophets.

That is not the Fact: most people mean that YOU cannot find a LAW which saith: "Thou shalt NOT use a musical instrument in they assembly." That is the meaning of the Law of Silence invented by the Disciples of Christ.  I need to repeat part of Ephesians 2 as the PATTERN where Paul and Peter EXCLUDE any of the performing arts and crafts to permit the elders as Pastor-Teachers to teach that which has been taught.

Keith D. Stanglin:  But if we say the Bible is silent, so we can’t do it, we would have to eliminate many things, such as invitation songs, Sunday school, supporting orphans’ homes, etc.  So, I’m not trying to prove anything by the silence, but just saying it is silent.

The Bible is NOT silent

You cannot TRUMP the Bible and recorded history by using your own imagination.  The Bible IS SILENT to those from whom Jesus says God HIDES: The Wise or Sophists meaning speakers, singers or instrument players.  Synagogues always existed in Israel and in time became HOUSES including a collection plate ONLY for the widows and orphans. It had pews and I am quite certain toilets with running water.

But, that fails to understand the word EKKLESIA or SYNAGOGUE: Paul used "synagogue" words to define Coming together, Assembling or Gathering. Vocal or instrumental rejoicing was outlawed way back in the wilderness. The Spirit OF Christ ordained the Qahal, Synagogue, Ekklesia or Church of Christ (the ROCK) in the wilderness.  The GODLY Jews were quarantined from the not-commanded animal sacrifices which profaned the Sabbath because God had abandoned the Civil-Militery-Clergy to the worship of the starry host: that began as the worship of the sun gods including Apollo, Abaddon or Apollyon in the wilderness.

The command and example in ALL recorded evidence was to preach the Word by READING the Word unless you wer an Apostle of Christ.  The command was to "Teach and Admonish" and the RESOURCE was defined as the CENI by Jesus Who commanded that we teach and observe what HE commanded to be taught. Remember the Great Commission "until the end of the World."

You can have toilets, toilet tissue, lamps, fans, Bibles without deliberately DESTROYING the Teaching-Learning one piece PATTERN. You CANNOT sing your own songs when the command is to use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our LEARNING.  Teaching-Learning. If you disable that by rhetoric, singing, instrument playing or drama Jesus calls you a HYPOCRITE or actor.

Keith D. Stanglin:
Everyone should agree that we are breaking no command or example to use instruments, because there’s not one.

That is a judgmental PROPOSAL that those who understand that PLAY negates SPEAK should just AGREE because THEY (delusional) cannot read BLACK text on BROWN paper.

Jude 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Jude 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Jude 16 These are murmurers, complainers [blaming Fate], walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having mens persons in admiration because of advantage.

Only those who intentionally SOW DISCORD by asking Machines for doing Hard work to perform worship for them are the MURMURERS which is not a redeemable sin:

The Horae were among the mathematici 'learned mothers' who defined the Zodiac and the star movements marking the seasons, one translation of the word 'hora.' Another is 'hour,' and the Horae developed various means to mark time. Hence the word for time keeping, 'horology' and the French word for clock 'horlogue.'

God did not command the King, Kingdom, Temple, Animal Sacrifices or the NOISE of the Levites which is called EXORCISM.  Prophesying with instruments means SOOTHSAYING which included SORCERY.  A speaker, singer or player who went INTO any holy place was to be executed.

2Chronicles 28:8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand, women, sons, and daughters, and took also away much spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.

In 2 Chronicles 29 Hezekiah PROPOSED to God an EXORCISM to make the temple COURTS (only) again suitable for sacrifices and burnt offerings which God had never commanded (Isaiah 1; Isaiah 7).

Hezekiah sacrificed GOATS for ISRAEL which had already been moved beyond redemption. God really commanded that the Levites under the King and Commanders of the Army to "stand in ranks" with swords and harps. When the burning of the Goats which substituted for INFANTS began only THEN did the instruments commanded by DAVID made a great crashing sound to signal the BURNT GOATS.  This noise produced FEAR and is not called worship.

Just after Hezekiah died, the evil Jews began to BURN INFANTS again and THIS was the origin of making instrumental NOISE. Click for 2 Chronicles 33 not required reading apparently

and he reared up altars for Baalim, and made groves,
and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

Keith D. Stanglin: They were commanded to (2 Chr. 29:25-28).  They were also commanded in the Pss, which served as the hymnbook for temple worship.

No, the COMMAND as we have noted was from the wilderness to stand with swords and harps ready to EXECUTE any of the godly Jews who came inside the city gates during this evil HOLOCAUST.

If you read on, when the Jacob-Cursed and God-Abandoned Levites made NOISE it was by the COMMAND OF DAVID.

Keith D. Stanglin: So why not in the NT; why not now?  Well, think of what the temple was for.  It was a physical location, for the purpose of offering continual physical sacrifices.  Almost all mention of instruments in worship in the OT connects them with the temple service, and thus, to the animal sacrifices.

Not commanded but  Imposed because of musical idolatry

Keith D. Stanglin: What happened when the animal sacrifices ceased?  The instruments went silent, too.  This happened even before the time of the NT.  The Jewish synagogues spread throughout the Greco-Roman world, but did not sacrifice animals, and did not use instruments.  They prayed, recited Pss, and read Scripture as their spiritual sacrifices.  For the Jews, instruments in the synagogue were about as inappropriate as an animal sacrifice.  IN the same way, in light of Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice, Hebrews urges us to “continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name” (Heb. 13:15).

That's true but the work has been DONE by claiming that God COMMANDED instruments when He DID NOT. This uses "theology" as rationale and leaves anyone free to say WELL GOD DIDN'T SAY NOT TO.  All of this "theology" is based on just repeating those who have never read and never needed to read the whole STORY  LINE.

The Godly Jews did not go to worship services at the temple where Christ says that the Jews were profaning the Sabbath because they had already been cut loose by God as Samuel makes certain.

The Synagogue EXCLUDED the Alarm or triumph over vocal or instrumental noise when they assembled ONLY to hear the word PREACHED by being READ on the Rest days never called a worship service.

John Calvin called for A Restoration of The Church of Christ
Alexander Campbell referred to Calvin in rejecting the trinity and his paper on Baptism notes that Calvin could have been a Campbellite. That is why the Christian Churches have no Restoration Movement roots.

Calvin also spoke about the Holy Convocation of the Synagogue.

Keith D. Stanglin:Third, our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19).  This is an amazing claim.  For if your body is God’s temple, then your body is sacred space.  To compare a broken human body with Solomon’s glorious temple—it is laughable, but also profound.  God’s Spirit lives in us.  So the praise that flows out of this holy temple is sanctified by the Spirit.  We ourselves are God’s instruments.  When Paul says to sing in the Spirit, and sing pss, hymns, and Spiritual songs, there is a capital “S” in Spirit.  The Holy Spirit indwells us, and Paul says it is by him that we sing, “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:3).

Fourth has to do with the nature of worship.  Worship is Spiritual and word-centered.  Word is a powerful motif in Scripture.  God created the universe by his spoken Word.  Jesus is the eternal Word of God, in that he reveals the Father to us.  The apostles traveled across the world to proclaim the Word of salvation.  God gives us the gift of language that we may praise him.  In song, we build each other up with spiritual words.  In song, we address God before his throne, to praise, thank, and beg him.  See 1 Cor. 14 (esp. vs. 15, 19) and the principle Paul establishes about intelligible words.  Word is the vehicle of the gospel.

Since worship is Word-centered, everything is joined to the Word.  Even the Lord’s Supper and baptism, visible symbols and events, are always joined to the Word, and always point us to the true eternal Word, Christ.  We worship in Spirit and in Truth, and Christ is the way, truth, and life (Jn. 1:1; 4:24; 14:6; 17:7).  But with too many churches, the instruments don’t just accompany the Word, but take priority over the Word.  They often don’t point us to the eternal Word, but distract us from him.

That is a good definition of Worship IN THE SPIRIT which is a PLACE in John 4 and Philippians 3.  The problem is that the foundtion had been laid to be tolerant of what Scripture always assigns to Satan from the Musical Enchanter(ess) or what Christ called Tyre as "lucifer" as the singing and harp-playing prostitute in the garden of Eden to the babylon Mother of harlots in Revelation 187-19 where the craftsmen, singers and instrument players are called sorcerers and will be cast alive into the lake of fire. That deserves no tolerance or fellowship of those who try to follow the fallen pattern.

Worship is IN is a place LOGOS is the opposite poetry or music: so-called a cappella churches perform their own songs and sermons and ignore that which is written for our learning. They use a style which creates that thrill which was always known as sorcery.

Keith D. Stanglin: II. Historical Reasons.

There is a widespread assumption that we are in a minority, and a cappella worship is strange.  When we look around at different Christian groups, we don’t see too many others worshipping like this.  So we are inclined to wonder about the legitimacy of this practice.

Well, we’re only in the minority if you have historical tunnel vision.  But if you take two millennia of church history and practice into account, we find ourselves in the majority, and instruments actually become the strange novelty.

In Jewish Worship

-Musical instruments were a common component of Israelite worship to God, but they were almost always linked with the temple and its sacrifices (1 Chr. 25:1-6; 2 Chr. 5:11-13; 29-30; Ps. 150).  Symbiotic relationship of sacrifice and song.  Instruments were part of the temple vessels (1 C 16).

-The function of temple music was: part of the ritual event, to proclaim God, praise, thank, prophesy.

-Synagogue services lacked physical sacrifices.  They also lacked instruments, which were so closely attached to the sacrificial system.  These were replaced with spiritual sacrifices and spiritual music.  Not that there was an eChristlicit prohibition of instruments (neither of sacrifices).

Again, it was because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai that God turned the Tribe of Levi over to worship the starry host. That was fulfilled when the temple was built whereas God had promised David a TENT.

Keith D. Stanglin Early Church

-Worship assembly in the early church, especially among Jewish Christians, tended to follow the model of the synagogue service.

-The (Gentile) church followed suit with its rejection of physical sacrifices for sin (especially in light of Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice); thus, its rejection of instruments logically followed.

- The early church fathers would not allow instruments in the assembly.  The church fathers, starting with Clement of Alexandria, unanimously prohibited the use of instruments in the assembly, but mostly for different reasons than we traditionally have used.  What arguments have traditionally been used in churches of Christ ? (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16).

That's too bad that NONE of the schools preparing preachers have taught beyond the surface reading of the text, collecting texts into sermons and teaching how to sermonize.  Earlier scholars of the Restoration Movement were students of Greek and Latin and were readers of the Classics which is the only way to see how a word is used.  Clement fully grasped that the Temple was not commanded until the Tribe of Levi fell into musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. Therefore, men like Clement or Justin Martyr understand why the Jews used instruments and it was after they had been abandoned by God.

Clement Chapter XIII.- Origin of Idolatry.
"But when all these things were done, men turned again to impiety; [There is a similar chapter in Homily IX. 7, but in a discourse: on the following day.-R.] and on this account a law was given by God to instruct them in the manner of living.

But in process of time, the worship of God and righteousness were corrupted by the unbelieving and the wicked, as we shall show more fully by and by. Moreover, perverse and erratic religions were introduced, to which the greater part of men gave themselves up, by occasion of holidays and solemnities, instituting drinkings and banquet

following pipes, and flutes, and harps, and diverse kinds of musical instruments, and indulging themselves in all kinds of drunkenness and luxury.

Hence every kind of error took rise; hence they invented groves and altars, fillets and victims, and after drunkenness they were agitated as if with mad emotions.

By this means power was given to the demons to enter into minds of this sort, so that they seemed to lead insane dances and to rave like Bacchanalians; hence were invented the gnashing of teeth, and bellowing from the depth of their bowels; hence a terrible countenance and a fierce aspect in men, so that he whom drunkenness had subverted and a demon had instigated, was believed by the deceived and the erring to be filled with the Deity.

See Austen Layard's Description of Fire Worship with Music.

Chapter VII.-Sacrificial Orgies. This is the WRATH caused by men with UNholy arms and women performing in the assembly where only the elders are commanded to teach that which had been taught. ORGY or the MANIA is the "prophesying" which the Stone-Campbell Movement working with the NACC are lusting to restore.

"But they did not cease to worship images, by reason of the evil intelligence of the magicians, who found excuses for them, which had power to constrain them to the foolish worship For, establishing this things by magical ceremonies, they assigned them feasts from sacrifices, libations, flutes, and shoutings,

by means of which senseless men, being deceived, and their kingdom being taken from them, yet did not desist from the worship that they had taken up with.

To such an extent did they prefer error, on account of its pleasantness, before truth.

They also howl after their sacrificial surfeit, their soul from the depth, as it were by dreams, forewarning them of the punishment that is to befall such deeds of theirs.

Keith D. Stanglin The first record of the organ in the church was in the eighth century.  Its use was not more common until the 13th cent.  Most Protestant reformers prohibited instruments.  They were not common in Protestant churches until the 1700s.  Even the Catholic council of Trent, in the 16th c., censured their use.  The Eastern Orthodox church still does not use instruments.  That includes Russian orthodox, and Greek orthodox still does not.

Then for goodness sake do people claim that Churches of Christ led by ignorant, southern rednecks IMPOSED not using instruments just because they were nasty, legalistic, sectarian hate mongers? Why CONSULT with the Christian Churches and their agents to maybe CHANGE our understanding and tolerance of two things God is said to hate: music in the temple and sowing of discord among brethren.

The Precenter or Incenter (fire starter, song starter) in the Catholic Church (called The Church of Christ) never sang TUNEFULLY but chanted or cantillated. The Jews had marked the Text for emphasis so that no future preacher could put the emphasis where he wanted it to be. The organ was used by monks and composers and never played to accompany chanting because it would have been senseless or impossible.  The organ played processionals. intercessions or recessionals but NEVER to accompany singing the commanded inspired text.

Keith D. Stanglin The point is that we are not alone.  A cappella singing is not some two hundred-year-old practice.  More like 2,000.  These names may not mean anything to you, but leaders such as Clement of Alexandria, Eusebius, Chrysostom, Augustine, Aquinas, Erasmus, Zwingli, Calvin, Beza, Wesley, and Spurgeon, all spoke out against instruments.  In other words, the most eminent early church fathers, medieval Roman Catholics, Calvinists, Methodists, and Baptists.  Not to mention the Restoration fathers.

WE NEED TO BE ALONE: Many are called but few are chosen meaning tested as by fire. "Shall He find faith when He returns?" No, almost none.  If you  speak the Word of God through Christ Jesus promised that THE WORLD WILL HATE YOU.

Keith D. Stanglin What are we to make of this Historical argument?  It is a secondary, but important reason.  Not that we elevate the opinions of human beings above Scripture.  But that this widespread agreement confirms our biblical/theological reasons.  We should see ourselves in continuity with the church of the past, and learn from it when we can.  If the early church, which had a living memory of the first century apostolic church, objected to instruments, we should take note.  In fact, we should have a pretty good reason if we would think about going against over 1000 years, and in most cases, 1700 years of Christian tradition.

Then we should NOT urge unity or tolerance of those who intend to seek unity meaning "We get Your Church."  We should not waver between teaching the "a cappella" view and "the Bible does not condemn instruments" which it clearly does.  If it says Thou Shalt Not be a Wise Guy or Sophist we know that it says thou shall NOT be a performing speaker, singer, instrument player or actor if you pretend to be a Disciple of Christ Who commanded you to teach what He commanded to be taught.

So do people have a pretty good reason for introducing instruments?  When we encounter those who want to use instruments, we should ask about the rationale for using them.  That is, what’s a good reason for adding them?  Change in worship is not a bad thing.  Change can be a very healthy thing, but there must be a good reason for it.

A scholar should say that "they do not have any reason to intruduce instruments" other than thinking they can SAVE more sould by attracting those already brain- and spirit-damaged by 24/7 ear buds.

The Disciples/Christian Churches NEEDED no reason to introduce instruments: they knew that they would drive away the owners but then and now they calculated that they could ATTRACT a lot more and in most cases as J.W.McGarvey was told "the church cannot survive without instruments" meaning they were another day older and deeper in debt. Even Nimrod could tell you why musical instruments were used to "regenerate morals through external means."

In an article in Christianity Today we have added the following comments:

"On pages 90, and 131, of this book Battle for the Mind Dr. William Sargent, a leading scientific authority on the human nervous system, writes, "Electrical recordings of the human brain show that it is particularly sensitive to the rhythmic stimulation by percussion and bright light among other things,

and certain rates of rhythm can build up recordable abnormalities of brain function and explosive states of tension sufficient enough to produce convulsive fits in predisposed subjects.

Of the results caused by such disturbances, the most common one is temporarily impaired judgement and heightened suggestibility

"Rhythm induced stress shows up in many ways, including decreased performance, hyperactivity, increase in errors in the work force, decreased decision making ability, emotional pressures, depression,

and lack of respect for authority.

"Unnatural rhythm, like many drugs, can become addictive. Repeated exposure to it causes one to seek it. It is as if a switch is thrown in the mind. After this switching takes place the body begins to crave this unnatural beat or rhythm over a natural one.

"It is as if the body can no longer distinguish between what is beneficial and what is harmful. In fact,

the body actually chooses that which is destructive over that which is constructive.

That is why you SHOULD NOT be taken captive with what the Bible and history calls sorcery or witchcraft.

Keith D. Stanglin So no matter what the change is—using multiple cups for the Lord’s Supper, singing during the LS, eating a meal in the church building, or using instruments—the question must be, Why?

To offer something worthy to God, to unite our hearts and minds on the cross and the empty tomb, to build each other up in the most holy faith.

The Cross was a STAKE: it was a phallic symbol of the Levites who musically mocked Jesus up to the foot of the old rugged cross.  It is a denial of physical facts to think that you can unite hearts around the sounds and sounders and think about Jesus at the same time.  Jesus died to REMOVE the Laded Burdens (arousal songs) and the Burden Laders.  To RECRUCIFY Christ agains is to AROUSE the passions the Cross was intended to cool off.

Or is the change intended to make church more entertaining, more enjoyable, more fun, more upbeat, more like a rock concert or carnival?

The Purpose Driven Cult which intended to infiltrate and divert the church property into "a theater for holy entertainmet."  Music has only entertainment: it was classed with drinking and deep sleep.

True; it has been noted that most who have fallen into the "worship teams" condition the audience to songs written for an instrument and that has moved into ROCK and Roll.

*Excursus on Luther*

Keith D. Stanglin: Even Martin Luther, whose Lutheran churches retained instruments, said with reference to additions in the Lord’s Supper: “Those additions have been made by men’s devotion and through their zeal, and include such things as vestments, ornaments, chants, prayers, organs, candles, and the whole pageantry of things visible. Let us turn our eyes and devote our minds purely and simply to that alone which Christ himself instituted.”  (Luther, Babylonian Captivity, in Dillenberger, 271).

I believe he says But or Instead of: Let us turn our eyes and devote our minds purely and simply to that alone which Christ himself instituted.”  (Luther, Babylonian Captivity, in Dillenberger, 271).

There was no such thing as congregational singing with organ accompaniment. The organ played processionals, intercessions and recessionals which were not part of the official MASS.

Christ did not institute any of those things: Luther risked his life for our freedom NOT to be forced or intimidated into repeating music which the Catholics said they borrowed from the pagans because they were common to ALL pagan cults. Luther wrote many songs but never to be used "in church."

Two points:
        1) Note that people often add these things out of zeal and devotion, not stubbornness or arrogance.  When evaluating changes, it is important to distinguish the motives behind the changes.

Motives have absolutely nothing to do with people who impose something out of zeal.  Instrument imposers know that they are sowing discord but have calculated that they can lose up to half of the owners but quickly make up the lost income by sucking in people who are looking for entertainment.

            2) Even so, for Luther (who still retained most of the above-mentioned practices), these things distract from the simplicity of worship.  Any form of distraction from the central focus of worship—whether it comes from a piano, a short skirt, or a self-centered song leader—is not helpful.

I don't think that is reading Luther correctly: Paul outlaws of these self-pleasure rituals which point to all of the musical and rhetorical performances SO THAT "we can use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our learning."

Martin Luther properly reading Romans 15 as forbidding the musical performances that we are commanded NOT to fellowship or excuse:

52. All the good we can do to God is to praise and to thank him.

This is the only true service we can render him, according to his words in Psalm 50, 23:
"Whoso offereth the sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifieth me;
and to him that ordereth his way aright will I show the salvation of God." We receive all blessings from him, in return for which we should make the offering of praise.

If anything else purporting to be service to God is presented for your consideration rest assured it is erroneous and delusive. For instance, the distracted world attempts to serve God by setting apart
        houses
, churches, cloisters;
        vestures, gold-trimmed, silk and [50] every other kind;
        silver vessels and images; bells and organs, candles and lamps;
the money for which expense should have been appropriated to the poor
if the object was to make an offering to God.

Further, it keeps up a muttering and wailing in the churches day and night.
But true praise and honor of God, a service that cannot be confined to place or person,
is quietly ignored the world over.

The pretenses of priests and monks about their system of exercises
being service to the Lord, are false and delusive.

53. Service to God is praise of him. It must be free and voluntary, at table, in the chamber, cellar, garret, in house or field, in all places, with all persons, at all times. Whosoever teaches otherwise is no less guilty of falsehood than the Pope and the devil himself.

But how shall there be with us honor and praise of God, true service to him, when we neither love him nor receive his blessings? And how shall we love him when we do not know him and his blessings?

And how shall we know him and his blessings when no word is preached concerning them
and when the Gospel is left to lie under the table?
Where the Gospel is not in evidence, knowledge of God is an impossibility.
Then to love and praise him is likewise impossible.

As a further consequence it is necessarily impossible for divine service to exist.

Even if all the choristers were one chorister, all the priests one priest,
all the monks one monk, all the churches one church,
all the bells one bell; in brief if all the foolish services offered to God in the institutions,
churches and cloisters were a hundred thousand times greater and more numerous than they are, what does God care for such carnivals and juggling?

Keith D. Stanglin: Much more could be said about this issue.  More reasons could be given, but these are the most basic.  Talk to me if you have any questions.  Now, the tougher question: How should we deal with those who disagree with us?

A person can object and say that none of these reasons absolutely “prove” the case for a cappella worship.  Maybe not.  But if it does fall short of “proof,” the evidence is still really quite strong.

People who do NOT use instruments have nothing to prove: those who IMPOSE are defined as the heretics or sectarians and the burden of proof is on them. Those who deserve food, clothing and travel expenses are commanded to GO preach the Gospel.  This was to call people OUT of religious organizations and into the Kingdom With which removes any access by those wishing to cluster and 'unity' rather than go, suffer, be hated and die.

All of the historic Scholars understood that musical instruments had not place in the called-apart assembly of Christ. Even participating in the musical festivals "outside of Church" were forbidden because they knew that music "enkindles lust" and lust brings forth sin.  There is command, example or remote inference for group singing with or without instruments. There is no MUSIC concept involved with the Synagogue of Christ and He forbids it beginning in the wilderness.  If you wish to IMPOSE what is called 'a cappella singing' in the assembly you violate direct commands but by now you do not deliberately sow discord as singing did when it was first imposed as cantillation in the year 373.

Keith D. Stanglin:  So, I cannot say that a person who worships with an instrument is condemned.  This issue is not equal to, for example, baptism, which is everywhere connected with the Holy Spirit, union with Christ, and forgiveness of sins.

Our job is to teach the Word: it is only when instrumentalists boast about infiltrating and diverting and driving out the owners that we can condemn "music in the Temple" Christ speaking thorugh amos 8 and we can condemn "sowing discord among brethren."  The minimial ethics would say about the Rabbi who introduced an organ into a German synagogue as late as 1815: "Go away and build your own synagogue." That's what the Illinois Supreme Courth told the instrumentalists at Sand Creek.

The Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation decrees that MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS from the time men learned the magic of beating on a piece of "ringing brass" is CONDEMNED specificially if you just care to define words.

Keith D. Stanglin:  But if the church’s worship is to be word [of God only] -centered, if instruments are indeed prescribed in connection with physical animal sacrifices,
if the NT is silent about them, [False premise]
and if the overwhelming majority of the historic Christian tradition censures their use,
then the church that uses instruments deviates or falls short,
whether or not they are aware of it as a shortcoming
.
In that case, we have good reason to defend and continue to practice a cappella singing, and little reason to introduce instruments.

BUT if it is a shortcoming, it gives us no right to think we are better, or think we have it made.

  1. If the congregation down the street uses instruments but has an outstanding record of benevolence,
  2. then another congregation that is a cappella and fails to support benevolence is no better off.

That is "theology" but not Biblical. Nothing can happen in any changed "culture'" (culture is always changing on us) can modify the Word of Christ in the Prophets and Apostles. No human has a right to remove the truth just because they are more benevolent. That would cripple Jesus Whom God made to be both Lord and Christ and Word and Grace.

If the INSTRUMENTAL church members give ALL of their property and go into a monastery they are violating Direct commands, examples and inferences of anyone who loves the Word of Jesus which He commanded to be taught until He comes again.

Why use the teaching example that people who don't disobey direct commands of God are remotely likely to be LESS benevolent than people who used music derived from mystery meaning "to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter" or to "silence the voice of the victim." Religious music has always been recognized as Sacred Violence and the performers are called PARASITES.  Jesus called the Levites, hypocrites by quoting Ezekiel 33 naming speakers, singers and instrument players and the MEANING of "we ill not listen to or obey your words."

The implication is in error: people who DON'T use machines for doing hard work are not CAUSED to be less benevolent than those using instruments. That is not the point: benevolence is not a legalistic ACT of worship. The Church of Christ is still A School of Christ in the Prophets and Apostles:

Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
        but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon [educated] the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
        Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Ephesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
Ephesians 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
A Church which is NOT Edified or Educated by the Prophets and Apostles cannot possibly GROW to be a habitation of God.

The group which is built upon what has always been self-pleasure and that which neither Christ nor the Prophets commanded to be taught to build up or EDUCATE the church then they are violating direct commands and prove that they have no love for "that which has been taught" which LIMITS the resources for the elder.  It doesn't matter how much of other peoples you collect and spend a small PERCENTAGE on benevolence that would be legalism or the works of human hands and it counts for nothing.

A Church of Christ which assembles WITHOUT instruments has no command, example or sensical reason to COLLECT money to do the token performance called benevolence. The person leaves the Assembly and the INDIVIDUAL takes care of benevolence.   The ABSOLUTE pattern for An assembly of Christ.
1Peter 4:11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God;
if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth:
that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
All of the speaking roles related to the LOGOS are the opposite of rhetoric, opposite of poetry, opposite of music, opposite of acting: Jesus called these the HYPOCRITES.

Both congregations fall short.  This is very important.

  1. In fact, whereas the instrumental, generous congregation has undermined a tacit theological and historical inference,  [NOT using instruments is NOT based on inferences]

  2. the STINGY, a cappella congregation has neglected an Christian command of Jesus.  Which is worse?

Both are WORST: there is no comparison between a PUBLIC role to Teach that which has been taught and the command of Jesus to let ALMS of the hands of the giver be put into the hands of the poor or destitute without the praise team being aware.  Benevolence is not part of the SCHOOL OF CHRIST in the words of Christ and the Campbells.

Not using "machines for doing hard work" is a DIRECT COMMAND, an approved example and necessarily inferred for anyone who can define EKKLESIA and WORSHIP.

  1. I would say that the person who sings with an instrument,
but truly pays attention to the words,
            understands them, and speaks them to God;
  2. is better off than the one singing without instruments and without a thought of what he is saying
one who fails to sing with the understanding, as Paul commands.

There is no command to Sing one to another. Remember: it reads SPEAK one to another using "that which is written."

No one was so simple in recorded history who did not know that the PURPOSE DRIVING musical performances is that you WILL, with no ability to resist pay attention to the performers and their performances.  PAY ATTENTION (that worship word) to the performer and their skill and too often their attractiveness..

In my Bible the command is to

Speak one to another (the Logos words means the opposite of poetry or music]
Resource: Psalms, hymns and Spiritual (inspired songs) all in the Book of Psalms.
The WORD of Christ in Colossians 3 or the SPIRIT (John 6:63)
Singing AND making melody
Where? IN the heart.
They can sing and play for 80 years and most people cannot quote the song and it is NOT what is used to build or EDUCATE.

Keith D. Stanglin:  This is a sobering thought that should generate humility.  It should come as no surprise, that all congregations, like individuals, fall short.  We as a church should throw ourselves before the mercy of our gracious God.

Humility DEMANDS that we listen to Christ through the prophets and apostles.  It is hard to see any humility when "praise teams" sing, clap, gyrate with or without instruments.

The Jews who ROSE UP against God in Musical Idolatry FELL SHORT and God condemned the living people to DEATH and their children to be sent Beyond Babylon which meant "land of no return."  A person who does NOT use instruments has not FALLEN SHORT of the commands of God. An instrumental church has fallen: in the Biblical examples that meant "no redemption" because people who decide to PLAY when God is speaking is OF the World and Jesus doesn't even pray for them.

Ecstasy or MANIA forms of "prophesying" was INTENDED to use INSTRUMENTS to cause "intoxication without wine." When you get that thrill and measure the Goose Bump Quotient as proof of spiritual worship you are A BIT DRUNK without wine.

It does not matter how far WE fall short: if every church of Christ violated all of the Laws of Christ each time that it met; and all of the STAFF were robbers and murderers, that does not rationally have anything to do with what SCRIPTURE TEACHES using BLACK text on BROWN paper.

Keith D. Stanglin:  But don’t think that instrumental music is now a non-issue.  As a church, we strive to behave and worship in ways appropriate for God’s children.  And so we don’t introduce it for no good reason and assume God’s going to forgive it.
We continue to teach, defend, and practice a cappella singing.
But no more than we should teach, defend, and practice giving to the poor,
visiting the prisoners, and seeking the lost.

While the NACC has diverted maybe 20 congregations out of a claimed 18000 for instruments as an alternative, it is a fact that the heresy of Musical Worship Teams or performance singing groups has infiltrated further beginning with John Mark Hicks and Rubel Shelly.  Shelly pronounced that the ONLY ROLE OF CHURCH IS WORSHIP and by that he/they meant virtual or defacto Musical Orchestras or bands using ORGANUM or after the Pipe Organ.

The Position and Function of Churches of Christ Today

Keith D. Stanglin What is the role of the Church of Christ in today’s broader fellowship of Christians? (cf. AG 10 statement; their reason-for-being) It should be noted, first of all, that we have vast similarities with the great majority of the Christian tradition (cf. Errett, Our Position). :

We believe in the authority of Scripture as an inspired rule of faith and practice.
We agree with the biblical teachings about Christ’s life, death, and ressurection.
We submit to the teaching of Christ.

Not
if you add Instrumental Music.  Psalm 41 prophesied that Judas would try to triumph over Jesus: that is what is outlawed for the Holy Convocation in the synagogue. Christ in the prophets identified musical performance as an ATTACK upon Him. Click to See  Isaiah 50.

Keith D. Stanglin We acknowledge and practice the two great sacraments of the church.  We are in line with the broad “catholic” tradition (per Errett).
Sacraments are outward signs of inward grace, instituted by Christ for our sanctification (Catechismus concil. Trident., n. 4, ex St. Augustine, "De Catechizandis rudibus"). The subject may be treated under the following headings:

On the other hand, Baptism as an ACT saves, says Peter, because that is the Christ-ordained time and place to REQUEST A holy spirit meaning A Good conscience.

The Lord's supper is not a sacrament but a showing forth or PREACHING the Death of Christ. It has no saving power other than that those who confess that Jesus died will NOT sing or sermonize out of THEIR own mind which have no redeeming value.
Keith D. Stanglin: But how should we view our “distinctives” in comparison with other Christian groups?  What is the place of Churches of Christ today?  What is our “reason for being” in contrast to other Christian groups?  What principle(s) of the Restoration movement do we promote, and what part of our identity are we wanting to pass along to our churches?

"Distinctives" has been used like "traditionalism" or "just our heritage."  It is a term used by those trying to point out the "strangeness" of churches of Christ.  Churches of Christ have simply continued to do and NOT do what has been the historic practices before the Disciples tried to take captive the historic quest of Calvin and others to "Restore the Church of Christ." The task is always to peel off any parasitic practices which seeks to "make My people forget My Name."

A Christian Group is identified by Jesus as close to the last direct command.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name [singular] of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen
.
Keith D. Stanglin Another way to ask the question is about our identity.

By identity I mean distinguishing characteristics,
things that are different or receive a different emphasis in SCM.
For example, Leroy Brownlow has about 30 reasons why he is a member of the Church of Christ.  Well, to speak for myself, I’m not a member of the Church of Christ b/c we reject missionary societies.  So, why are we?  I’m assuming there’s something more substantial than “my Dad was.”  So what is the positive part of the identity?  What are the important values of the Restoration Movement?  Do we want to pass on any ideals of the Restoration?  If so, what does that include and look like?

The Campbells simply wanted to set up local "societies" which would be INCLUSIVE by defining:
Church is A School of Christ
Worship is Reading and Musing the Words of Christ.
Thus, the "distinctives" imposed by people claiming that "a spirit told me that God commanded instrumental praise" should be PRIED OFF then any person can attend any assembly without being brain- and spirit- assualted by "musical" sounds which OSHA and Nimrod knew to be Decibel Poisoning.

That was the opposite of the Stoneite Christians who even adopted the Shouting Methodists as an ACT of worship.

SCM
we assume to be the Stone-Campbell Movement which is a lie. There never was a Stone Campbell connection in any sense of the Word. At one time it was pretty easy to assemble with Baptists, Methodists or Presbyterians because NONE would be subjected to the noise of what they call instrumental music.

The Stone-Campbell Movement
See a Review of the World History of the Stone-Campbell Movement which is written by "scholars" but neither students of the Bible or Recorded history. The Stone-Campbell Anti Bible Dogma

The HIGH CHURCH view of the Disciples of Christ claims that the SCRIPTURES ARE NOT THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY.

Keith D. Stanglin These are very difficult questions.  I want us to focus on the things that distinguish us from the other groups.  Our distinctives. Options to avoid: 1. We can say we have it right on everything, and everyone else is condemned.

If you follow the PATTERN of assembling to Rest, Read and Rehears the Word
we can all speak the same things.  No one claims or needs to be right on all things which, in the words of the Campbells, constitute a SOCIETY which may take care of local needs.  However, it is a DOGMATIC CERTAINTY that not using what they jokingly call INSTRUMENT MUSIC with whiny boys and girls singing erotic praise songs is a SIN. It claims to be able to "lead you into the presence of God" and only the man Jesus Christ died for that office. If you say that God commanded instruments when God did not then Christ in Jeremiah 23 calls that Blaspheming the Holy Spirit OF Christ.

Keith D. Stanglin:
2. The other extreme is to refuse to make any value judgment, and to say our distinctives make us no better off than others.

Or to make a negative value judgment about ourselves—
our distinctives disadvantage us and make us look silly.

Isaac Errett argued that our distinctives are mainly the result of rejecting later additions to simple, primitive Christianity.  In other words, everyone would surely agree with our practices.  Eg, all churches acknowledge singing.  No one is scandalized by a weekly LS, baptism by immersion.  Errett’s solution is for all to abandon sectarianism.

Errett may be right about a few things,
but he may not allow for mutual learning from others.
So let’s assume that we can and should learn from other groups.

WRITTEN FOR OUR LEARNING

But what should they learn from us?
There is no better place to start
than the two fundamental values of our historic TRADITION.
I think that, although they can be placed in tension to one another, they are not mutually exclusive.

We are a UNITY MOVEMENT based on respect for God’s word, the means to lead us to Christ.

FELLOWSSHIP PASSAGES

See Edward Fudge in the Death of a Distinctive     Part Two

NOT using musical instruments in the assembly is NOT JUST OUR HISTORIC TRADITION.  Too many claim that not using instruments is just a vile disease caught from our godly ancestors.  It is a bit lke "navigating the winds of change" to weave into and back again by such words as DISTINCTIVES. We do not compare ourselves with any human opinion which by definition must be mostly wrong: Many (most) are called but few (a tiny number) are chosen by being tested by their obedience to the Son as the Son was obedient to the father.
2Corinthians 10:12 For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with certain of them that commend themselves: but they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.
1. Call for unity.  Taking John 17 seriously.  SCM is at its heart a unity movement, which is clear from the Dec. and Add.

The World History of the Stone-Campbell Movement is FINANCED by the Disciples of Christ.  I have reviewed this and documented the ugly history of the instrumentalists promoting 'unity' by confiscating churches of Christ.

The Declaration and Address was not a unity movement meaning unioning among all of the SECTS. Unity was possible only if people CAME OUT of the sects and denounced all of the trappings of organizationism such as the Stone-Campbell Movement.

Our desire, therefore, for ourselves and our brethren would be, that,

rejecting human opinions and the [3] inventions of men as of any authority, or as having any place in the Church of God, we might forever cease from further contentions about such things; returning to and holding fast by the original standard;

taking the Divine word alone for our rule;
the Holy Spirit for our teacher and guide, to lead us into all truth;
and Christ alone, as exhibited in the word, for our salvation;

that, by so doing, we may be at peace among ourselves, follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

[Thomas Campbell noted elsewhere that: "I am not to be understood as objecting to the detection and exposure of a false and unscriptural experience, which, from your words, appears to be the thing intended; for, in your foot note, page 141, you assert, that we are taught, that

"since those gifts have ceased, the Holy Spirit now operates upon the minds of men only by the word;" and at the close of said note, you further assert, that "we are positive of one point,"

namely, "that the scriptures teach us NOT the doctrine of physical operations of the Divine Spirit in order to faith."]

V. That this Society, formed for the sole purpose of promoting simple evangelical Christianity, shall, to the utmost of its power, countenance and support such ministers, and such only, as exhibit a manifest conformity to the original standard in conversation and doctrine, in zeal and diligence;

only such as reduce to practice that simple original form of Christianity,
expressly EXHIBITED upon the sacred page;

without attempting to inculcate anything of human authority, of private opinion, or inventions of men, as having any place in the constitution, faith, or worship, of the Christian Church, or anything as matter of Christian faith or duty,

for which there can not be expressly produced a "Thus saith the Lord, either in express terms, or by approved precedent.

Thomas Olbricht Declaration and Address

Unity means that what they call the ANTI-instrumentalists JOIN the Christian Church and bow while we pipe. The Stone-Campbell REPUDIATES the only unity for which Jesus prayed: He did not pray for the WORLD and God HIDES Himself from the wise. The Wise are SOPHISTS meaning rhetoricians, singers, instrument players or actors.
The TINY REMNANT will be in an invisible KINGDOM and its ministers will GO into all the World and teach that which Jesus commanded them to teach. The Stone Campbell Movement
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee
        the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self
with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

John 17:6  I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world:
        thine they were, and thou gavest them me;
and they have kept thy word.

Instrumentalists have NOT kept the Word of Jesus else they would be despised and rejected of men:

John 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
John 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me;
and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee,
and they have believed that thou didst send me.
John 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world,
that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
John 17:14 I have given them thy word;
and the world hath hated them,
because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world,
but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
John 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world,
even so have I also sent them into the world.
Keith D. Stanglin:  Christians only, but not the only Christians.  As AC said, a Christian is “Every one that believes in his heart that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, the Son of God; repents of his sins, and obeys him in all things according to his measure of knowledge of his will” (Reply to Lunenburg letter).  There is a difference between a perfect and imperfect Christian.  One need not have a perfect understanding and practice of every issue.

The Lunenburg Letters are often misquoted to have Alexander accept anyone. He uses the word cHRISTIAN as we often do meaning a christian society.  however, he denied that anyone could be a Christian or Disciple of Christ who had not been baptized.  See the Full text of the Lunenburg Correspondence

1. Let me ask, in the first place, what could mean all that we have written upon the union of Christians on apostolic grounds, had we taught that all Christians in the world were already united in our own community?

2. And in the second place, why should we so often have quoted and applied to apostate Christendom what the Spirit saith to saints in Babylon--"Come out of her, my people, that you partake not of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues"--had we imagined that the Lord had no people beyond the pale of our communion!

3. But let him that yet doubts, read the following passages from the Christian Baptist, April, 1825:--

"I have no idea of seeing, nor wish to see, the sects unite in one grand army.
This would be dangerous to our liberties and laws. For this the Saviour did not pray.
It is only the disciples dispersed among them that reason and benevolence would call out of them, "&c.

5. Various essays and letters on "Christian union" from our correspondents, are given to our readers with our approbation; from one of which we quote these words:--

"I suppose all agree that among Christians of every name there are disciples of Jesus Christ, accepted of God in him, real members of his body, branches in the true vine, and therefore all one in Christ." October, 1826, vol. 4, p. 53.

Keith D. Stanglin:  “Mistakes of the understanding and errors of the affections are not to be confounded.”  Erring out of ignorance is still to err, but everyone, including God, recognizes the difference between that and willful disobedience.  For this reason, AC is not willing to say there are no Christians in denominations, whether Roman Catholic, Eastern Orth., or Protestant. Peter Meiderlin’s quote (1620s): “in necessariis Unitas, in non necessariis Libertas, in utrisque Charitas.”

Of course, in
June, 1837, the mind of people wishing to cast off UNIONISM could imagine that anyone would go so far as to introduce musical instruments: not even the Disciples of Christ.  It tool later generations and a lot of Frog Boiling for the next untaught or mistaught youth to flaunt their right to sow discord and "steal the church house of widows."

Keith D. Stanglin:
2. Attention to Scripture.

One of the most positive things about the SCM
is the willingness to listen to Scripture.  To take seriously what all Christian groups maintain: that Scripture is the primary norm and rule of faith and practice.
Presumably, we should always be willing to be changed in light of Scripture.
We should always be willing to hear a perspective that has a biblical basis,
and evaluate our present positions and beliefs on that same ground.
Scripture, interpreted and applied with humility and submission, is a means to unity and to fellowship with God through Christ in the HS.

It would be a good thing to change if the instrumentalists could find or need to find any Biblical jot or tittle authorizing the use of instruments. The only ASSEMBLY God permitted on the rest days was the Qahal, Synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness. Christ specificially EXCLUDED vocal or instrumental rejoicing which would be blaspheming God Who sent sub-elders down to groups of 10 families to READ and REHEARSE or meditate which is absolutely required for teaching and admonishing to become LEARNING.

Jesus the Christ is PERSONIFIED Grace. He TEACHES that which the Stone-Campbell Movement denies and tries to destroy.

Keith D. Stanglin:
3. Ecclesiology.  SCM promotes, in contrast to much of evangelical Protestantism, a high ecclesiology or doctrine of the church. Membership and participation in Christ’s visible body, the pinnacle of which is the Lord’s Day assembly, is a means of grace.  With this high respect for the assembly of God’s people in God’s plan of redemption, comes an emphasis on some of the most distinctive aspects of Churches of Christ:

HERE IS THE PATTERN

Matthew 26.30 When they had 'hymned" they went out to the Mount of Olives.

I believe that the Latin agrees with the common understanding that "singing was using the normal inflections of the human voice." Especially when you are confessing God the Father by the use of a hymn or prayer which gives HIM the glory. Mature males then and probably now do not agree to get together to appease God with singing.

"The word that is employed for this "anaginosko, anagnosis) is the technical term for the cultic reading aloud of the Old Testament in the synagogue. By applying this terminology to the reading of his own epistles he not only ascribes the same authority to the apostolic word as to the Old Testament writings...he also combines a quotation from the Old Testament with a word of Jesus and introduces the whole with the familiar formula: 'for the Scripture says.'" (Ridderbos, Hermon, Paul, P. 483 an Outline of His Theo., Eerdmans)

The Stone Campbell Movement is the organ of the "pastor" who has tried to replace the elders and deacons as ordained as the chief ministers of a congregation.
The early 19th century Restoration Movement also encompassed very different views concerning the role of clergy: the Campbell branch was strongly anti-clergy, believing there was no justification for a clergy/lay distinction, while the Stone branch had a higher view of clergy, believing that only an ordained minister could officiate at communionTristano  Richard

The Gospel Advocate re-emerged in 1866 under the editorship of Tolbert Fanning together with William Lipscomb's younger brother, David Lipscomb. In the segueing decades the Gospel Advocate consistently opposed missionary societies and instrumental music in worship as innovations incompatible with the original Stone-Campbell objective of restoring the New Testament character of the church.
They are active agents promoting Instrumental Music, the roles of women, and other clearly denials of Scripture in keeping with minimizing Scripture and replacing it with THEOLOGY: Doctors of the Law take away the key to knowlege says Jesus.  As Scribes Jesus calls them hypocrites pointing to Isaiah and Ezekial naming self-speakers, singers and instrument players.

Ezekiel spoke of workshops of evil where the prophesiers especially women collected to "steal prophecies one from another." Christ cannot tolerate and will not leave unhurt any organization presuming to UNITE people in an organizational sense.

A person who would use their own SELF-WILL to steal your property to perform musical idolatry would kill you if not restrained by law to control people who are self-willed.

Keith D. Stanglin: b. Baptism by immersion for forgiveness of sins.  Weekly Lord’s meal.  A cappella singing.  It is interesting, and not embarrassing, that these three practices were typical in the church still 1,000 years from its inception.  And the first two are being promoted by the WCC as part of the ecumenical core for all Christian churches.

The aim of the WCC is to pursue the goal of the visible unity of the Church. This involves a process of renewal and change in which member churches pray, worship, discuss and work together.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD DOES NOT COME WITH OBSERVATIONS--VISIBLE WORSHIP OBSERVATIONS.

LOTS of preachers deny outright that Baptism is FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS. Too many of them use weasel words promoting Believer's Baptism where baptism is just a symbol.

Keith D. Stanglin We can have a “prophetic” voice in the Christian world.  E.g., while we have stood out (like a sore thumb?) for our teaching on baptism, this is more and more being recognized as part of the ecumenical core of the faith.

This is a new, favorite effort to exercise PROPHETIC ROLES.

The Muses along with the instrument players and all religious functionaries work for Apollo or Abaddon. In Revelation 17 Paul identifies the ALL-times Mother of Harlot religion where the are called SORCERERS intending to deceive the whole world:

Keith D. Stanglin: Is it possible to teach what we believe to be biblical, but remain willing to learn a more perfect way?  While we stick to our distinctives in a prophetic way, we can learn from other groups.  We don’t have to agree with everything that other groups say in order to learn something positive from them.  But we should continue to teach and practice the distinctives that we believe are biblical.

The RESOURCE for truth is not the opinion of any  human: God said that the imagination of the human heart is only evil continually.  The instrumental churches have nothing to teach in support of Congregational singing with Instrumental accompanied because there is no evidence of Godly people being called into a SERVICE which was relegated to the Jacob-cursed tribe of Levi.

A Disciple does not seek to learn from "other groups": that would affirm the post-modern view that TRUTH can only be found by the use of imagination.
