Matt Dabbs Denies Law Nailed to the Cross

Matt.Dabbs.Denies.Law.Nailed.to.the.Cross

Matt Dabbs: I cannot tell you how many times I have heard in my life that the Old Testament is irrelevant to us because it was nailed to the cross and is therefore no longer useful to Christians today.

The preamble to all attacks against the Historic Churches of Christ is "everything taught and practiced is wrong. But, now, we have a NEW way of theology and I am no longer ignorant."  In all of the writings of the "Progressive Churches of Christ" they rely on spoken or written rhetoric which repudiate's the role of Jesus who SPOKE only the Word or Logos which God His and Our Father breathed (spirit) into Him.  Nothing does more violence to the mission and message of Messiah as to claim that He did not abrogate the Law of Moses.

Matt Dabbs People have based this view on a number of things. First there is Colossians 2:14 that says something actually was nailed to the cross and it was the “written code.” Without studying what that might actually refer to people assumed that when Paul wrote “written code” that he meant the Old Testament.

Matt Dabbs Repeated:: There has already been enough said on what it was that was nailed to the cross. The thumbnail sketch is this. Paul has numerous descriptors of the Law of Moses and the Old Testament and it is never this word. If you read Colossians 2:14 in context without the preconceived idea that it is the Old Testament it reads differently.
        What is being nailed to the cross is our list of indebtedness, a legal list of debts,
        that is being brought against us by the powers of darkness.
        Jesus cancels out our debt by his death on the cross. It is paid in full.

Is. 29:18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book,
        and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
Is. 42:7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
Is. 42:16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.

There is no CODE in the Bible: this is NIV commentary

Col. 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ORDINANCES that was against us,

Comparing the Ephesian parallel it is not possible to be confused.

Eph. 2:14  For he is our peace, who hath made both one,
        and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
Eph. 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity,
        even the law of commandments contained in ordinances;
        for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Eph. 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross,
        having slain the enmity thereby:

Reading the whole text would make it clear

Col. 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers,
        he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Col. 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink,
        or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col. 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

What is the SHADOW?

Heb. 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come,
        and not the very image of the things,
        can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually
        make the comers thereunto perfect.
Heb. 10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

God did not command the sacrifices, burnt offering of the Instruments commanded by David.

2Chr. 29:27 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar.
        And when the burnt offering began,
        the song of the LORD began also with the trumpets,
        and with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel.

The word CODE is not in the text: the ORDINANCES were blotted outy BY nailing or slaying.

Col. 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ORDINANCES that was against us,
         which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cros

The "progressives" never need to read the text!! Dogma includes the traditions of the elders. The Civil-Military-Clergy did not follow the Law of Moses but were abandoned to their own vain imagination and Babylonianism.

Dogma is the Greek Autonomia or Self made laws: 3. dogmatism it includes POETRY poi-etikos or poetic license. AW.

DOGMATIC IN CHURCH means self-composed sermons almost never teaching "that which has been taught" or self-composed silly ditties violating the command to use "that which is written" Paul defines as Scripture

However, that also includes The Law of Moses.

1Cor. 9:9 For it is WRITTEN in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? .

Gal. 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the CURSE: for it is
WRITTEN,
        Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are
WRITTEN in the book of the law to do them.

Gal. 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Gal. 3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Gal. 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law,
        which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
Gal. 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Gal. 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law?
        It was added because of transgressions,
        till the seed should come to whom the promise was made;
        and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Eph. 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

Heb. 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ORDINANCES,
        imposed on them until the time of reformation.

Heb. 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
        sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Heb. 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ,
        who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
        purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Why would Jesus be the Mediator of the NEW TESTAMENT if the OLD TESTAMENT is still in effect.

Heb. 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament,
        that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament,
        they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Heb. 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

What I think
is also behind the need to see the OT as nailed to the cross is that if you open yourself up to what is in the OT then things like instrumental music get put on the table and you have to figure out what to do with that.

THERE IS NO INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN THE LAW OF MOSES.  While Kings, Chronicles etal were written during the time of the Law they were not part of the Written Ordinances which were added because of transgression.

Chronicles details the sacrificial system including Civil-Military-Clergy written by the Scribes whom Jesus brands as hypocrites and the prophets brand as liars about the Temple which God did not command.

Amos 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images,
        the STAR of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

Acts 7:41 And they made a calf in those days,
        and offered sacrifice unto the idol,
        and rejoiced in the works of their own hands

Amos 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images,
        the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Amos 5:27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,
         saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

Matt Dabbs: When the denominational world uses things like the Psalms to justify instrumental music in debate it is much easier to find a verse that just knocks out the whole OT than to do the heavy lifting of what you actually do with the psalms and why things are different in the New Testament.

Paul commanded that we SPEAK Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs FOR OUR LEARNING. The Word or Logos is the REGULATIVE PRINCIPLE: It outlaws personal opinions, personal experiences, rhetoric, singing, playing instruments or acting. In fact SPEAK is the opposite of SING and that is why if you are interested in learning the Ode and Psallo are in the heart meaning silent.
Lexis.Ode.gif

The Psalms were "collected" during the period after God "gave them kings in His anger" after their period of Grace was violated and God sent them away into Babylon as the end-time church is abandoned to "Babylonianism" using "lusted after fruits" as speakers, singers or instrument players. John calls them Sorcerers who HAD once deceived the whole world. They will be CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE of Fire.  The Spirit OF Christ in Isaiah 30 uses the picture below to show how God drives His Enemies into hell to the beat of wind, string and percussion instruments.

That is why the Psalms defined as performed WITH an instrument was warrior panic songs.  The translators of the Septuagint used the PSAO or SOP words to define these psalms because they were not ignorant.

The tabulation of musical passages "contains a rather disproportionate number of metaphorical sentences, where music or its instruments are not to be understood literally but are used as similies or rhetorical figures. The most celebrated of these poetical passages is Paul's glorification of love in I Cor. 13." (Interpreter's Dict of the Bible, Music, p. 466).
Psalmos also appears in the LXX as equivalent to the Hebrew word neginah. This Hebrew term is used to describe a wide variety of songs. Neginah is translated by psalmos in Lam 3:14 (song), in Lam 5:14 (music) and in Ps 69:12 (song). It is striking to observe that in the LXX translation of Lam 3:14 and Ps 69:12, psalmos, or its verbal form, is used for songs that are not only uninspired but are in fact the product of the wicked, even drunkards, who mocked God and His word. The Hebrew term neginah is used elsewhere in the Hebrew Scriptures of: the songs of the wicked, Job 30:9 (song); the inspired praise of God, Psalm 61 title (Neginah-a song performed on a stringed instrument); and the uninspired praise of the Lord composed by King Hezekiah, Is 38:20 (my songs).
Acts 7:42 Then God turned,
        and gave them up to worship the HOST of heaven;
        as it is written in the book of the prophets,
        O ye house of Israel,  have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices
        by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

Matt Dabbs: Obviously not everything in the OT would still apply even if we nailed to the cross the idea that the OT was nailed to the cross (sacrifices as one example) but the shortcut is to just ditch the whole thing, win the debate, and move on. I am convinced that some of the stranger views that Churches of Christ have traditionally held over the years (like the Old Testament being nailed to the cross) developed out of debate winning more than good exegesis that then got repeated enough times to solidify into tradition.

Churches of Christ did not INVENT what any Bible reader can read for himself.

Justin Martyr Chapter XVIII.-Christians Would Observe the Law, If They Did Not Know Why It Was Instituted.

"For since you have read, O Trypho, as you yourself admitted, the doctrines taught by our Saviour, I do not think that I have done foolishly in adding some short utterances of His to the prophetic statements.

Wash therefore, and be now clean, and put away iniquity from your souls,
as God bids you be washed in this laver,
and be circumcised with the true circumcision.

For we too would observe the fleshly circumcision, and the Sabbaths, and in short all the feasts, if we did not know for what reason they were enjoined you,-namely, on account of your transgressions and the hardness of your hearts. For if we patiently endure all things contrived against us by wicked men and demons, so that even amid cruelties unutterable, death and torments, we pray for mercy to those who inflict such things upon us, and do not wish to give the least retort to any one, even as the new Lawgiver commanded us: how is it, Trypho, that we would not observe those rites which do not harm us,-I speak of fleshly circumcision, and Sabbaths, and feasts?

Moreover, all those righteous men already mentioned, though they kept no Sabbaths,  were pleasing to God; and after them Abraham with all his descendants until Moses, under whom your nation appeared unrighteous and ungrateful to God,

making a calf in the wilderness:
wherefore God, accommodating Himself to that nation,
enjoined them also to offer sacrifices,

as if to His name, in order that you might not serve idols. Which precept, however, you have not observed; nay, you sacrificed your children to demons.

And you were commanded to keep Sabbaths, that you might retain the memorial of God. For His word makes this announcement, saying, "That ye may know that I am God who redeemed you.'

Matt Dabb: How is our message conflicting? The problem is in our practice we haven’t ditched the whole thing and moved on. In fact while saying in one breath that the OT was nailed to the cross we say in the next breath that it is needed to prove various doctrinal points. So we go to places like Genesis 6:14 and God’s instruction to use “gopher wood” or Nadab and Abihu for rules on specificity of worship while also saying the OT is irrelevant. Oddly enough both of these examples are used to instruct worship practice while at the same time saying other verses in the OT shouldn’t do that very thing!

Genesis is included in the BOUND VOLUME but it is not part of the LAW OF MOSES.

Gen. 6:12 And God looked upon the earth, and,
        behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

Gen. 6:13 And God said unto Noah,
        The end of all flesh is come before me;
        for the earth is filled with violence through them;
        and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
Gen. 6:14 Make thee an ark [coffin] of gopher wood; [kopher or "pitched wood"]

lĕvĭgo ,  Make straight, light: why would anyone want to use HEAVY wood.
        rooms shalt thou make in the ark,
        and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Nile boats are still built of acacia planks. Uni, fetching alabaster (Breasted, i. 323) from Hatnub, builds a boat of acacia, nearly a hundred feet long and fifty wide. Noah's ark was built of acacia wood (Gen. vi. 14 ‘gopher wood’). Mimosa Nilotica a very light wood.

By definition a Christian is a Disciple, is a student and he LISTENS to LEARN.  Why would anyone want to do a legalistic end run around simply obeying God's commands.  Any student understands that they do not have to use gopher wood to "speak that which is written for our learning" by vocational elders.

THE NADAB AND ABIHU TERMINAL SIN

Nadab and Abihu did many things but to "offer strange fire" they would have to enter the holy place of the Tabernacle.  This is compared to a pseudo-Levite Musical Worship Team "standing in their holy place."

The same Preachers who are forced to appeal to gopher wood are the same people who ignore the dozens of condemnation of Instruments as proving that people neither intend to SPEAK or OBEY the Words of Jesus Christ our only Teacher. However, the Nadab and Abihu presumption caused the addition of the Day of Atonement and the Scape Goat which was a sacrifice to Azazel or the Devil.  God turned them over to worship the starry host.

No Levitical singer or musican could EVER enter into the presence of the incense altar between the Holy Place and Most Holy Place, in Hezekiah's reform (Peck preference) EVEN to clean out the garbage left over from pagan idolatry.

The "civilians" could never come near the tabernacle or temple without incurring the death penalty.

The Levites could never enter into the Holy Place which typified the church.

No Israelite people ever engaged in "congregational singing with instrumental accompaniment."

This was all part of the CURSE of the sacrificial system which God quarantined to Jerusalem which was already a Jebusite High Place.

Matt Dabbs: That is highly confusing! The inconsistency is not lost on everyone.

Matt Dabbs: What makes that even more problematic is that Paul himself stated the OT was useful for many things in 2 Tim 3:16. Mose of the time that verse is used people are referencing the whole of scripture or, in the case of Churches of Christ and our traditional view on the Old Testament, the New Testament itself.

The odd thing is that when Paul wrote those words the NT didn’t exist in its present form and Paul is even writing those words as scripture in the very moment they are being written. What is Paul referring to when he writes “all scripture” here? He is referring to the scriptures, literally the writings, as he knew them and quoted them constantly in his letters – the Old Testament, which based on our traditional view, would put Paul at odds with himself. On one hand he appears to say it is nailed to the cross in Colossians and then on the other hand says that it is useful for so many things that the OT is indispensable in the life of the Christian!

All of the Prophets which define the REST of Jesus FROM religious work were copied on scrolls and even BOUND in a book long before the time of Jesus. The Isaiah Scroll as the foundation was perhaps a hundred years old when Jesus was born.

The Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaa) is one of the original seven Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in Qumran in 1947. It is the largest (734 cm) and best preserved of all the biblical scrolls, and the only one that is almost complete. The 54 columns contain all 66 chapters of the Hebrew version of the biblical Book of Isaiah. Dating from ca. 125 BCE, it is also one of the oldest of the Dead Sea Scrolls, some one thousand years older than the oldest manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible known to us before the scrolls' discovery.
The Spirit OF Christ or the Breath of God REPUDIATES everything Matt Dabbs and the Wineskinners promote:

Is. 29:18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.

The eunuch was wise to salvation because he was reading Isiah and wanted to be baptized.

Acts 13:15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets
        the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying,
        Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.
Acts 13:27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers,
        because they knew him not,
        nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day,
        they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

We have shown that there was nothing in the Curse of the Law given because of Instrumental-Trinitarian-Perverted idolatry.

Holy Scripture is defined as the Prophets and other prophecies concerning Christ and His New Creation.  The Complete Jewish Bible existed maybe 200 years before Christ and His quotes are taken from the Septuagint.  The dead sea scrolls contained many psalms and a complete Book of Isaiah with the Qumran copy dated long before Jesus.

Scribes wrote anything of interest and had copiests making copies to be sold before the crowd dispersed.  There is nothing in the Old Testament as THE LAW OF MOSES which had any place in the Synagogue or Church from the beginning.

There was no remission of sins or Spiritual Cleansing under the Law of Moses. The Prophets inspired by God Who breathed the Spirit OF Christ defined the future Kingdom of Messiah both inclusively and exclusively.  The Law was read to keep you from getting killed but the Synagogue was for reading of the Prophets.

A Church of Christ is built upon or EDUCATED by the Prophets and Apostles which is what makes one WISE even today.

Eph. 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
        but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household [excludes priests and Levites] of God;
Eph. 2:20 And are built [Educated by] upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
        Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Eph. 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
Eph. 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Therefore, Paul as did Jesus defined Holy Scriptures as the Prophets and other prophecies CONCERNING HIM.

2Tim. 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned
        and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
2Tim. 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures,
        which are able to make thee wise unto salvation
        through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2Tim. 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
        and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Tim. 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

THAT'S WHY THE ONE PIECE PATTERN FROM THE CHURCH IN THE WILDERNESS AND NEVER CHANGED.

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time
        hath in every city them that PREACH him,
        being READ in the synagogues every sabbath day.

Acts 8:28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
Acts 8:30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias,
        and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

WHAT PAUL EXCLUDES BEFORE MATT'S PROOF TEXT:

2 Tim 3: 10 But thou hast fully known
        my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,

2 Tim 3: 11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra;
        what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.

2 Tim 3: 12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

2 Tim 3: 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse,
        deceiving
[wandering stars], and being deceived.

Matt Dabbs: Either Paul is conflicted or we are. I am going to say its us, not you…Paul.

When people begin to refute the clear historic text and interpretation we have to worry:
Jesus does not pray for the world, Kosmos, the Ecumenical or the kingdom of the Devil.
God hides from the wise or sophists: those selling sermons, songs or playing instruments.
The Ekklesia or School of Christ is the WAY that is called a SECT: it is narrow and fools cannot even stumble in.
Jesus nor His disciples who SPEAK only the Word or Regulative Principle are OF the World and will be hated and robbed.
Those OF the World are defined by Jesus as being from UNDER.

John 8:23 And he said unto them,
        Ye are from beneath [3.inferni , ōrum, m., the shades below];
        I am from ABOVE: b. on earth, opp. the world below,
        ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

What is more, the Gospels constantly rely heavily on the Old Testament as scripture to make their case for Jesus. You can say that was pre-resurrection and so they were under the Law but that misses the point. The Gospels were not written down during the ministry of Jesus. They were written down later, in the 60s and beyond, even after Paul’s writings. The Gospel writers made their points about Jesus from the very book that we say is irrelevant to Christians. The Gospel writers knew that the OT itself was the most relevant document in existence when it came to understanding exactly who Jesus was and is. The same could be said for Paul. The same could be said for Revelation, written by the apostle John, whose story cannot be told without the Old Testament as it is referenced or alluded to hundreds of times in that single book.

That's Good:
God Prophesies Events in Fleshly Types.
He fulfills the SPIRITUAL Anti Type
So that literate readers can have Faith.
He leaves us a written "memory"
He outlaws further expounding
He outlaws Corrupting the Word: selling learning at retail is prostitution

The Certified, Validated by Signs and Wonders and left in written form for our MEMORY cannot be Private Interpreted or Further Expounding without refuting the Spirit OF Christ.  The bound HEBREW BIBLE is NOT the Law of Moses.  That which is written by the Scribes was NEVER God's Will and the Law of Moses.  The Law of Moses did not alter the only spiritual Covenant made by God in Christ to Abraham.

Gen. 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet,
        until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Matt. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass,
        one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Luke 22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me,
        And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them,
        These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you,
        that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses,
        and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,
        that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
John 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar:
        and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar,
        he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Heb. 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
Heb. 10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

God never commanded animal sacrifices, burnt offering or the instrumental NOISE to "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter."

Heb. 10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
Heb. 10:8 Above when he said,
        Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not,
        neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
Heb. 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God.
        He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Heb. 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified
        through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Matt Dabb takes the Negative:

The Church of Christ (the Rock) was for Reading and Remembering the Word of God: excluded was vocal or instrumental rejoicing.
The prophets define the Reign of Christ both inclusively and exclusively. Anyone wanting to sell himself as a teacher should be able to read.
