If you grew up in Churches of Christ, this is MY REVIEW on the Holy Spirit for you. In “Poured Out: The Spirit of God Empowering the Mission of God”

1. God is not a cripple as charged. God puts His WORDS directly into the MOUTH of Prophets and Jesus Christ on.
2. Jesus put the WORD, logos or Regulative Principle into the MOUTH of the Apostles.
3. The Apostles were eye-- and ear--witnesses of the WORD articulated by Jesus left us a MEMORY not to be interpreted nor further expounded not sold.
4. Peter said of those who reject these left memories are FALSE TEACHERS.
5. When the WORDS were recorded and Preserved Jesus said my WORDS are SPIRIT and Life.

If you grew up in Churches of Christ you will grasp that we removed "BLESSED TRINITY" from our song books.  That is because no one in recorded history defined the GODHEAD (not a three-headed god but Divine Nature] before 1942 by H.Leo.Boles.

SPIRIT means wind and is a figurative or PARABLE word to define how God pours out His SPIRIT meaning putting HIS WORDS directly into the MOUTH of the Prophets and in the end time the MAN Jesus of Nazareth.

SPIRIT POURED OUT PRODUCES WORDS BUT NOT TO MODERN "DOCTORS OF THE LAW.":

Is. 59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;
        My SPIRIT that is upon thee,

Jer. 1:9 Then the Lord put forth his hand,

Jer. 5:14 Wherefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts,

Job 15:13 That thou turnest THY SPIRIT against God,

IF CHURCHES OF CHRIST ARE LEFT BEHIND IT IS BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO NEVER TRUST ANYONE WHO SEES VISIONS (Lucado) OR HEAR AUDIBLE VOICES (Shelly) nor drink their KoolAid.  The words translated SPIRIT also means FLATULENCE. All of these claims of superiority is psychological violence making you afraid to cross them.  Then they can turn your School of Christ into a "theater of holy entertainment" where the SPIRITUS is Apollon and the LOCUSTS are the Muses as his worship team.  In a more literate world everyone knew that:

[25] the Muses of Olympus, daughters of Zeus who holds the aegis: "Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things."

The MUSES were the:

and ONE LORD [Kurios] Jesus Christ,

"He (Karl Rahner agreeing with Karl Barth) believes that in light of the modern development of the concept of person, its unqualified use in the Trinitarian doctrine leads unmistakably to tritheism." Matei then quotes:

"There can be no doubt about it: speaking of three persons in God entails almost inevitably the danger (as a rule we try much too late to overcome it through explicit corrections) of believing that there exists in God three distinct consciousnesses, spiritual vitalities, centers of activity, and so on.

This danger is increased by the fact that, even in the usual presentation of the scholarly treatises on the Trinity, there is first developed a concept of 'person' derived from EXPERIENCE and philosophy, independently of the doctrine of the Trinity as found in revelation and of the history of this doctrine.

Next this concept is applied to God, and thus it is demonstrated that there are three such persons in God. " (Eugen Matei, THE CONCEPT OF 'PERSON' IN TRINITARIAN CONTEXT: HISTORICAL AND ECUMENICAL PERSPECTIVES)

See how the trinity originated out of pagan superstition and Greek philosophy.

See how the trinity originated out of pagan superstition and Greek philosophy.

THE PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT meant that Jesus was given the role of HOLY SPIRIT which means nothing more than "without flesh and bones."  Jesus promised another Comforter [Paraclete] and said I WILL COME TO YOU.

1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
        And if any man sin, we have an advocate [Paraclete] with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him,
         if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments,
        is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word,
        in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him
        ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Modern Trinitarians mean that I NOW HEAR THE HOLY SPIRIT and YOU must obey.

Leonard Allen does what he does best – church history combined with biblical theology.
        When you add in his own personal story in Churches of Christ
        and his DEVELOPING understanding of the Holy Spirit,
        I believe our fellowship needs to be aware of this book
        and familiar with its contents for several reasons
        in line with the main thrust of the book

AGAIN, God is capable of putting HIS WORDS into the MOUTH of the PROPHETS and now only into the MOUTH of Jesus without needing another member of the family of Gods.

SPIRIT IS A PARABLE WORD PROBABLY TO HIDE FROM THE WISE, SOPHISTS, SPEAKERS, SINGERS, INSTRUMENT PLAYERS.

Zoe is EVE or Evah in feminine or effeminate worship so they have to slander Paul.  Evah means an abomination because she is the MEDIATRIX as the dirty Muses were called the SHEPHERDS.  There is a mother behind every progressive.

which is that Christianity began on the margins,
moved to the center (Constantine and Christendom),
and now is moving back to the margins in the West.

This means it is as important as ever that we move to our missional purpose and that purpose necessitates a better understanding of the work of the Spirit to inform and empower us.

This BOOK ILLUMINATES the PERSON of the Holy Spirit as a member of the Trinitarian Godhead

Jesus sent men out to baptize in the NAME of father, son and spirit (mother) which people ALWAYS saw as a trinity REQUIRED for instance for a father (Osiris at Mount Sinai), mother (Isis, dove, spirit) and GENERATED son (Horus).

I think that most if not all of our leaders think that godh
ead speaks of a three-headed God as he is represented.  Originally the trinity was three shes.  The TRINITY called BLASPHEMY by Jesus and ANTICHRIST by John is marked by femine-effeminate victory in the pulpit and Musical Worship teams of Apollon.  In Revelation 17 they are agents of the babylonian mother of harlots.  In Revelation 18 they are "lusted after fruits" as religious craftsmen (parasites), singers, instrument players and as GRINDERS prostitutes.

The earliest societies and religions were matriarchal, kings were sacrificed, and the moon was thought to control the sun.  At Mount Sinai the Instrumental-Perverted PLAY was an assault against Jehovah the ONLY real God.

Col. 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Godhead is something that dwells IN Jesus who came in the FLESH.

1.  Notice that philosophy, vain deceit, traditions of men, rudiments of the world
2.  ARE IN CONTRAST TO
3.  GODHEAD.

Begin with reading the text:

Col. 2:9 For IN him [Jesus] dwelleth all the FULLNESS
        of the Godhead bodily.

It is to accuse Paul and inspiration of ignorance because somethed DWELLED in the FLESH of the MAN
God was smart enough to have Paul say that in Jesus Christ GOD livend in His FLESH body.

GODHEAD NEVER MEANS THE ONE GOD THE FATHER: FIRST LOOK AT SOME BIBLE 101A TO PREVENT YOU FROM BLASPHEMING OR BEING AN ANTICHRIST.

ONE:
Christ's Enemies: John 10:33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not;
        but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
A Christian: John 10:36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified,
        and sent into the world,
        Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

TWO:
1Tim. 2:5 For there is one God,
        and one mediator between God and men,
        the MAN Christ Jesus;

THREE:
God Said: Num. 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent:
        hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Jesus Said: John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
        Except ye eat the FLESH of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

FOUR:
God is: John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Jesus is NOT: Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see;
        for a spirit hath not FLESH and bones, as ye see me have.

FIVE:
1John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God:
        and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
2John 7 For many deceivers are entered into the world,
        who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.
        This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

In the first chapter, “Uncontained,” Allen demonstrates the historical shifts that created Christian culture in the Western world that seemed to tame the Spirit and disconnect us from our Spirit-given missionary impulses. He recognizes that there has been a shift in our world to things of the spiritual realm, although often biblically uninformed, this shift is an opportunity for Christianity to engage in a more proactive and healthy dialog with our non-Christian friends due to their spiritual openness. Some of this shift has happened in Western culture but a lot more of it has happened in the Global South, “where Christianity has been expanding at breakneck speed, mostly in Pentecostal/Charismatic form.” (p.23). In rapid succession, Allen lays out the historical framework of this shift up to our current culture of postmodernism. All of this means that we are on a mission field whether we know it or not. This chapter gives a big-picture historical-cultural view of the Holy Spirit.

Apis the golden calf or calves represented Osiris, Isis and Horus: the pagan trinity of father, mother and son.

Horus was the posthumous son and heir of the god Osiris, the primordial king and giver of life. He was invited by his uncle, Seth, to spend a day. Seth’s real motive was not to show him hospitality but to disqualify him from inheriting his father’s royal power. To this end, while Horus slept Seth committed an act of sodomy upon him. Since sodomy was inflicted as a punishment on a defeated enemy and was a symbol of domination, Seth could then claim that he had conquered Horus and demand the kingship in his place.

Leonard Allen: The very truth about Christ--that he is God in the Flesh, Son Saviour, and Messiah--becomes INTELLIGIBLE through the deep work of the Spirit.

Jesus Who came in the FLESH and was the first BEGOTTEN FROM THE DEAD.

1John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every SPIRIT, but try the SPIRITS whether they are of God:
        because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1John 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit OF GOD:
        Every spirit that confesseth that JESUS CHRIST IS COME IN THE FLESH IS OF CHRIST
1John 4:3 And every SPIRIT that confesseth not
        that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh
        is not of God: and this is that SPIRIT OF ANTICHRIST
        whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Making the MAN Jesus not counting and A holy spirit PERSON defeat the Father as Spirit or Mind, the SPIRIT person defeats both father and son. The only SPIRITUS "person" is Apollo, Apollyon or Abaddon.  Apollon carried his BOW to twang a singing arrow into the literaly heart of anyone who would not BOW DOWN and hil LYRE to shoot "love arrowns" into those who bowed down.  Even today, those who claim that THEY are the repositories make the latest SPAWN submit in order to get on the circuit to BUY and SELL their own songs and sermons.  Paul calls that Selling Learning at Retail or PROSTITUTIO.

Historically, the rape of males was more widely recognized in ancient times. Several of the legends in Greek mythology involved abductions and sexual assaults of males by other males or gods. The rape of a defeated male enemy was considered the special right of the victorious soldier in some societies and was a signal of the totality of the defeat. There was a widespread belief that a male who was sexually penetrated, even if it was by forced sexual assault, thus "lost his manhood," and could no longer be a warrior or ruler. Gang rape of a male was considered an ultimate form of punishment and, as such, was known to the Romans as punishment for adultery and the Persians and Iranians as punishment for violation of the sanctity of the harem (Donaldson, 1990). Donaldson, Donald. (1990). "Rape of Males," in Dynes, Wayne, ed. Encyclopedia of Homosexuality. New York: Garland Publications.

Leonard Allen: The mission of the Son becomes OPERATIVE and EFFECTIVE through the mission of the Spirit.  That is how the Trinity-in-mission operates.

Leonard Allen says that the Mission of Jesus Christ COULD NOT be effective without A Holy Spirit Person as one of the Gods.

SPIRIT in all languages is figurative or a PARABLE. When God communicates with Moses, Elijah for the Prophets and LASTLY the MAN Christ Jesus, He puts His WORD into the MOUTH and does not need another god to aid Him.
SPIRIT is never a god or man: SPIRIT is figurative or a PARABLE which means that:

John 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said,
        My DOCTRINE is not mine, but his that sent me.
John 7:17 If any man will do his will,
        he shall know of the
DOCTRINE
        whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
John 7:18 He that speaketh of HIMSELF seeketh his own glory:
        but he that seeketh his glory that sent him,
        the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

Job 7:11 Therefore I will not refrain my MOUTH;
        I will SPEAK in the anguish of my SPIRIT;
        I will COMPLAIN in the bitterness of my SOUL.
Job 15:13 That thou turnest thy SPIRIT against God,
        and lettest such WORDS go out of thy MOUTH?
Is. 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read:
        no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate:
        for my MOUTH it hath commanded,
        and his SPIRIT it hath gathered them.
Is. 59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;
        My SPIRIT that is upon thee,
        and my WORDS which I have put in thy MOUTH,
        shall not depart out of thy MOUTH,
        nor out of the MOUTH of thy seed,
        nor out of the MOUTH of thy seed’s seed,
        saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.

John 8:26 I have many things to say and to judge of you:
        but he that sent me is true;
        and I SPEAK to the world those things
        which I have HEARD of him.
John 8:27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them,
        When ye have lifted up the Son of man,
        then shall ye know that I am he,
        and that I do nothing of myself;
                but as my Father hath taught me,
               I
SPEAK these things.
John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me:
        the Father hath not left me alone;
         for I DO always those things that PLEASE him.
John 8:30 As he spake these WORDS, many believed on him.
John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him,
        IF ye continue in my WORD, THEN are ye my disciples indeed;

SPIRIT is always stated as God puts His WORD into the MOUTH of Jesus for the very last time.

I think that means that we probably cannot find a Word-Centered church anymore.  MOST say that they are CHRIST CENTERED which means that they are ANTI anything written as LETTER which YOU cannot understand unless you procure a THEOLOGIAN.

John 8:37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed;
        but ye seek to kill me, because my WORD hath NO place in you.
John 8:38  I SPEAK that which I have SEEN with my Father:
         and ye DO that which ye have seen with your father.

The Holy Spirit has not solely been contained by the pages of the Bible and is not a “tame” Spirit that we have somehow “nailed down” (p.19).

God's WORD is transferred ONLY by Face to Face and Mouth to Mouth.

Is. 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and READ:
        no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate:
        for my MOUTH it hath commanded,
        and his SPIRIT it hath gathered them.
Is. 59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD;
        My SPIRIT that is upon thee,
        and my WORDS which I have put in thy MOUTH,
        shall not depart out of thy MOUTH,
        nor out of the MOUTH of thy seed,
        nor out of the MOUTH of thy seed’s seed,
        saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
2Th. 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed,
        whom the LORD shall consume with the SPIRIT of his MOUTH,
        and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
Rev. 16:13 And I saw three unclean SPIRITs like frogs
        come out of the MOUTH of the dragon,
        and out of the MOUTH of the beast,
        and out of the MOUTH of the false prophet.

In the first chapter, “Uncontained,” Allen demonstrates the historical shifts that created Christian culture in the Western world that seemed to tame the Spirit and disconnect us from our Spirit-given missionary impulses.

STRONG DELUSION produce LYING WONDERS or Religious Observations based on Imagination.

1Kings 22:21 And there came forth a spirit,
        and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him.
1Kings 22:22 And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said,
        I will go forth, and I will be a LYING SPIRIT in the mouth of all his prophets.
        And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
1Kings 22:23 Now therefore, behold,
        the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets,
        and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.

The Holy Spirit as the STATE

The second chapter, “Traditions,” works through various views on the Holy Spirit throughout Christian history. Dr. Allen traces five streams of Christianity including the Anabaptists, Pietists, Methodists, Restorationists (Churches of Christ), and Pentecostals. This is where he is at his best, illuminating various traditions and their theological emphasis that helps us understand how we got to where we are today. Cessationism and Word-onlyism are explained and set against various other traditions in helping us see the strengths and weaknesses of various traditions (including our own). What we find is a series of pendulum swings from hyper-rationalism and “Spirit universalism” where a more open and universalist view is maintained (p.49). This chapter puts the theology of the Holy Spirit into a historical-doctrinal framework.

The third chapter, “Trinity” is where Allen begins a heavy emphasis on connecting the relevant scriptures. I have read more of Leonard Allen’s church history than I have his theology and was very impressed with his ability to interpret the relevant scriptures and tie together various threads of the best theologians we have at our disposal both from ancient church history all the way up until today. This chapter not only gives a scriptural backing for the Trinity but also gives us some of its historical roots out of the first 400 years of church history (p.63).

A considerable amount of space is devoted to the work of the Spirit in the LIFE  and ministry of Jesus, tracing the Spirit’s work from Jesus’ conception to his baptism, through his ministry and ultimately to the work and power of the Spirit in the resurrection of Jesus (pp. 66-68).

Rom. 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
        that like as Christ was raised up from the dead
        BY THE GLORY OF the Father,
        even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Rom. 8:11 But if the Spirit OF HIM
        that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you,
        he that raised up Christ from the dead
        shall also quicken your mortal bodies
        by HIS SPIRIT that dwelleth in you.
1Cor. 15:15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God;
        because we have testified of GOD that HE raised up Christ:
        whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.
1Cor. 15:16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

Because the idea of Trinity is relationality within God himself, Allen uses this idea to push back against LEGALISM and moralism,

“The Spirit counters all moralism and LEGALISM by inviting us into the intimacy and joy – the ecstasy – of God’s life, indeed, by being the bearer of that life” (p.73). This is a needed corrective in our fellowship and one I hope people will consider.

Philo "developed a doctrine of ecstasy or ek-stasis, which means sstanding outside oneself.' This is the highest form of piety which lies beyond faith. This mysticism unites prophetic ecstasy with 'enthusiasm', a word which comes from en-theos-mania, meaning to possess the divine. From this there comes finally the fully developed mystical system of the Neo-Platonists, for example, of Dionysus the Areopagite.

In this mystical system the ecstasy of the individual person leads to a union with the One, with the Absolute, with God." (Tillich, Paul, A History of Christian Thought, Touchstone, p. 13)

Interestingly, Philo defines a form of responsive music where male and female monastic SECTARIAN Jews studied all day and played all night. The effect of women was evident on the form of music which is often confused as Christian responsive singing.

"The survival of these ideals in a particular late-twentieth-century Southern Baptist culture suggests a complex picture of gender and acceptable ways of being manly or womanly, masculine or feminine.

This complexity of gender relations and the old-fashionedness of the hymns within this cultural community has been ignored, and perhaps even deliberately concealed, by an official culture that dismisses all sentimental hymnody as vaguely effeminate.

"The notion of music as a tool or technology with a clearly defined purpose is very prevalent in the East. In the West that view is held by some, but others believe that music is entertainment or art and nothing more.

Ecstasy Britannica of Apollon's Oracle at Delphi: his Muses or worship team were "locusts" and filthy shepherdesses.

In certain ancient Israelite prophetic groups, music was used to achieve the ecstatic state, in which the participants, in their accompanying dancing, were believed to have been seized by the hand of Yahweh, the God of Israel, as in the case of Saul, the 11th-century-bc king of Israel. The Pythia (priestess) of the Greek oracle at Delphi often went into an ecstatic state during which she uttered sounds revealed to her by the python (the snake, the symbol of resurrection), after drinking water from a certain spring. Her "words" were then interpreted by a priest to help a suppliant find a way to avoid calamities, especially death. In primitive religions, ecstasy was a technique highly developed by shamans, religious personages with healing and psychic-transformation powers, in their "soul," or "spirit," flights. Chapter four, “Kingdom” fleshes out a point Allen makes in the last chapter, that we are to live into the story of scripture.

Chapter four fleshes out that story, Israel’s story through the Spirit’s role in establishing and advancing the kingdom.

Gal. 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you,
        that ye should not obey the TRUTH,
        before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Gal. 3:2 This only would I learn of you,
        RECEIVED ye the Spirit by the works of the law,
        or by the HEARING of faith?
Gal. 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Gal. 3:4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Gal. 3:5 He therefore that MINISTERETH to you the SPIRIT,
        and worketh miracles among you,
        doeth he it by the works of the law,
        or by the HEAR of faith?

Gal. 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Gal. 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Gal. 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
Gal. 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Gal. 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
Gal. 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

I have heard N.T. Wright on many occasions refer to our need to connect Isaiah 40-55 to the Gospel and second temple Judaism’s understanding of the Messiah, resurrection, and so much more. This chapter is the response and filling out of Wright’s point. He works through the kingdom as Israel’s story through three main parts of Israel’s national identity:

THERE IS NOTHING AFTER THE INSTRUMENTAL-PERVERTED IDOLATRY AT MOUNT SINAI EXCEPT THE PROPHETS WHICH IS "HOLY SCRIPTURE" CONCERNING JESUS.

THE CHURCH IS A WAY CALLED HERESY OR A SECT.

Is. 40:2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem,
        and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished,
        that her iniquity is pardoned:
        for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.
Is. 40:3  The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness [John],
        Prepare ye the WAY OF the Lord, [YHWH]
        make straight in the desert a HIGHWAY FOR our God.

Is. 40:10 Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand,
        and his ARM shall rule for him:
        behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

Is. 59:8 The way of peace they know not;
        and there is no judgment in their goings:
        they have made them crooked PATHS:
        whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
Jer. 6:16       Thus says the Lord:
     “Stand by the roads, and look,
        and ask for the ancient PATHS,
     where the good WAY is; and WALK in it,
        hand find rest for your souls.
     But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
Is. 59:16 And he saw that there was no man,
        and wondered that there was no intercessor:
        therefore his ARM brought salvation unto him;
        and his righteousness, it sustained him.

First, he draws on the “New Exodus.” Jesus’ journeys back from Egypt through the water into the wilderness temptations and then into a Spirit-empowered ministry per Luke 4. This liberation/deliverance theme is now about God delivering us to salvation from sin and death.

Psa. 106:6 We have sinned with our fathers,
        we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.
Psa. 106:7 Our fathers understood NOT thy wonders in Egypt;
        they remembered NOT the multitude of thy mercies;
        but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
Psa. 106:8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake,
        that he might make his mighty power to be known.
Psa. 106:9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up:
        so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.
Psa. 106:10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them,
        and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.
Psa. 106:11 And the waters covered their enemies:
        there was not one of them left.
Psa. 106:12 Then believed they his words;
        they sang his praise.
Psa. 106:13 They soon forgat his works;
        they waited not for his counsel:
Psa. 106:14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness,
        and tempted God in the desert.
Psa. 106:15 And he gave them their request;
        but sent leanness into their soul.
Psa. 106:16 They envied Moses also in the camp,
        and Aaron the saint of the LORD.
Psa. 106:17 The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
        and covered the company of Abiram.
Psa. 106:18 And a fire was kindled in their company;
        the flame burned up the wicked.
Psa. 106:19 They made a calf in Horeb,
        and worshipped the molten image.
Psa. 106:20 Thus they changed their glory
        into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.
Psa. 106:21 They forgat God their saviour,
        which had done great things in Egypt;
Psa. 106:22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham,
        and terrible things by the Red sea.

Second, he draws on the “New Temple.” Once again, he works off of
        some of our greatest THEOLOGICAL minds like Wright and Beale.
        The temple shifts from tabernacle to temple to Jesus to us.
        I do wish he had worked off more of Beale here going back
        not just to the tabernacle but to Eden itself.

God did not command the Temple: it was designed and built with Jewish slaves by Hiram the Architect as the MODEL of Lucifer the singing and harp-playing prostitute.

Acts 7:42 Then God turned,
        and gave them up to worship the HOST of heaven;
        as it is written in the book of the prophets,
        O ye house of Israel,  have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices
        by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

Acts 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch
        and the star of your god Remphan
        figures which ye made to worship them:
        and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Acts 7:46 Who found favour before God,
        and desired to find a TABERNACLE for the God of Jacob.
Acts 7:47 BUT Solomon built him an HOUSE.
Acts 7:48 Howbeit the most High
        dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
Acts 7:49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool:
        what house will ye build me?
saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
Acts 7:50 Hath not my hand made all these things?

The Tabernacle was parked at ONE PLACE after the Mount Sinai Idolatry.  God did not command King, Kingdom, Temple, Priests or Levites, animal slaughter or Levites to MAKE THE LAMBS DUMB BEFORE THE SLAUGHTER.  This was to PREVENT sacrifices or burnt offerings which HE DID NOT COMMAND (Isaiah 11; Jereiah 7)

He also goes right to John 2 where Jesus parallels himself with the temple. It is interesting to note that the temple discussion actually starts in John 1, with temple references with Bethel and angels ascending and descending on the son of man. This is at the same time Jesus calls Nathanael a “true Israelite” a Jacob-guy who was the same guy in the same story where the angels were ascending and descending after which Jacob called the place “Beth-el” (house of God = temple). I am sure Dr. Allen is familiar with this information. There is only so much you can include to make the point!

Luke 24:53 And were continually in the temple,  [NEVER, inside of]
        praising and blessing God. Amen.
John 2:14 And found in the temple those
        that sold oxen and sheep and doves,
        and the changers of money sitting:
John 2:15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords,
        he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen;
        and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;
John 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them,
        Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
John 2:20 Then said the Jews,
        Forty and six years was this temple in building,
        and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
John 2:21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

Third, he draws off Paul’s language of “New Creation.

Those who are baptized are promised the gift of A holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) which is A good conscience (1 Peter 3:21)

Heb. 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, [Church of Christ]
        which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all,
        and to the SPIRITS OF just men made PERFECT,

It is in this section of chapter four that Allen engages the idea of already and not yet (p.90).

John Chrysostom confirms Acts 7 where Stephen was murdered for telling the clergy that God did not command a temple.

Homily XVI.

ACTS VII. 6, 7.-"And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years. And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve Me in this place."

See, what a number of years the Promise has been given, and the manner of the Promise, and nowhere sacrifice, nowhere circumcision! He here shows, how God Himself suffered them to be afflicted, not that He had anything to lay to their charge. "And they shall bring them into bondage," etc.

But nevertheless, they did not these things with impunity. "And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage I will judge, said God." For,to show that they are not to go by this, in estimating who are pious (by reason of their saying, "He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him,") (Matt. xxvii. 43).-

He, the Same that promised, He that gave the land, first permits the evils.

So also now, though He has promised a Kingdom, yet He suffers us to be exercised in temptations. If here the freedom was not to be till after four hundred years, what wonder, with regard to the Kingdom? Yet he performed it, and lapse of time availed not to falsify His word. Moreover, it was no ordinary bondage they underwent.

Editor's Note 3: The relation of v. 6 and 7 to v. 5 is, as Chrys. intimates, to show that the apparent incongruity between the promise of God to give the land to Abraham and his seed, and the fact that Abraham never personally possessed the land, was not accidental nor did it involve the failure of the divine promise. Accompanying the promise were divine assurances (Gen. xv. 13, Gen. xv. 14) that a period of bondage and oppression was to precede the occupation of the land which was to be the inheritance of the nation.-G. B. S

the people grew and multiplied in Egypt, till another king arose, which knew not Joseph" (v. 17, 18).

Observe, that it is not during the four hundred years that He multiplies them, but (only) when the end was about to draw nigh. And yet already four hundred years were passed, nay more, in Egypt. But this is the wonder of it.

"The same dealt subtly with our kindred, and evil-entreated our fathers, that they should cast out their young children, to the end they might not live." (v. 19.) "Dealt subtly:" he hints at their not liking to exterminate them openly: "that they should cast out their young children," it says. "In which time Moses was born and was exceeding fair." (v. 20.)

This is the wonder, that he who is to be their champion, is born, neither after nor before, these things, but in the very midst of the storm (qumw). "And was nourished up in his father's house three months." But when man's help was despaired of, and they cast him forth, then did God's benefit shine forth conspicuous. "And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son." (v. 21.)

Not a word of Temple, not a word of Sacrifice, while all these Providences are taking place. And he was nourished in a barbarian house. "And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds." (v. 22.) "Was trained," both

Editor's Note 16: kai paideia kai grammasin, as the comment on epaideuqh v. 22, which must be supplied. Cat. has, kai paideia kai grammata. E. omits the clause, and substitutes, as the beginning of the next sentence, 'Emoi qaumazein eperxetai pwj. "To me it occurs to wonder how he could be forty years," etc. So Edd.

Chapters 5 and 9 are both on mission. Chapter 5 lays the foundation for chapter 9. I appreciate the double emphasis on mission and on concluding the book with a chapter on mission.

If we take the Holy Spirit seriously we will end up on mission and we will regain our relevance,
        not as a nationalized/politicized entity but
        as God’s people and presence in this world
        to pour the Spirit out and shine a LIGHT on the nations.

All pagans believed in a father, mother (spirit) and evil son. As the ANTITHESIS of Pagan polytheists, Jesus was given all of the power and was made audible of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
         All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth
.

[The Spirit OF Christ is HIS own Spirit and He didn't need a helper god to make His words INTELLIGIBLE.

A holy spirit person did not send evangelists on MISSION.  Jesus said:

Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore,
        and teach all nations,
        baptizing them in the name [singular] of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe
        all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
        and, lo, I am with you alway,
        even unto the end of the world. Amen

Jesus was given the office of HOLY SPIRIT which means "without flesh and bones." Jesus and not a Holy Spirit Person "poured out what you see and hear" in the upper room.  It was Jesus who appeared to Paul and promised to APPEAR to Him when needed.  On the road to Bithynia The Holy Spirit was the Spirit OF JESUS..

Allen does an admirable job of tracing
        the empowerment of the Spirit in both the mission of Jesus and the mission of the early church.

The Spirit does this through gifting the church. That gifting is graceful and powerful and the end goal is to make us more like Jesus (p.113). He ends this chapter as he does in several of the other chapters by
        talking about how this emphasis has been lost over the years
        and NOW more than ever needs to be restored and reclaimed.

That continues to disqualify Jesus as the Prophet, Priest, King, Ruler and Teacher of His School of the word.

Rom. 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
        which was made of the SEED of David according to the FLESH;
Rom. 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power,
        according to the spirit OF holiness,
        by the resurrection from the dead:
Rom. 1:5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship,
        for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Rom. 1:6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
Rom. 1:7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints:
        Grace to you and peace from
        God our Father,
        AND
        the Lord Jesus Christ.  [Jesus of Nazareth was not made Lord or Christ until 30 years after He came in the flesh]
Rom. 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the GOSPEL OF CHRIST
         for IT is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;
         to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Allen and Dabbs say that Another god named The Holy Spirit is the power of mission.

Rom. 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith:
        as it is written, The just shall live by faith

Leonard Allen: The mission of the Son becomes OPERATIVE and EFFECTIVE through the mission of the Spirit.  That is how the Trinity-in-mission operates.

Leonard Allen says that the Mission of Jesus Christ COULD NOT be effective without A Holy Spirit Person as one of the Gods.

The SON is NOT Operative producing an appropriate effect : NOT efficacious  having the power to produce a desired effect

JESUS DENIES LEONARD ALLEN:

John 5:20 For the Father loveth the Son,
        and sheweth HIM all things that himself doeth:
        and he will shew him greater works than these,
        that ye may marvel.
John 5:36 But I have greater witness than that of John:
        for the WORKS which the Father hath given me to finish,
        the same works that I do, bear witness of me,
        that the Father hath sent me.

SCRIPTURE IS ALMOST ALWAYS THE ANTITHESIS OF PAGAN THEOLOGY

Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
        ALL POWER is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
        baptizing them in the NAME [singular]
        of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

The Father was WORD, The Father BREATHED (spirit), Jesus the Son ARTICULATED the Word of God.

Literate Peter commanded baptism in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things
        whatsoever I have commanded you:
        and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

THERE WAS NO HOLY SPIRIT

Rom. 1:8 First, I thank my God THROUGH Jesus Christ for you all,
        that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
BECAUSE:
        1Tim. 2:5 For there is ONE GOD
                and one mediator between God and men,
                the MAN Christ Jesus;
Rom. 1:9 For God is my witness,
        whom I serve with MY spirit in the gospel OF HIS SON
         that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

Leonard Anderson says: The Son is
OPERATIVE and EFFECTIVE through a Spirit person

However, Jesus said My WORDS are SPIRIT so that the Gospel WORDS contain the power without another god person.

Acts 16:6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia,
        and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
Acts 16:7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia:
        but the SPIRIT OF JESUS suffered them not.
Acts 16:8 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.
Acts 16:9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night;
        There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him,
         saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

Acts 16:10 And after he had seen the vision,
        immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia,
        assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

Matt Dabbs denies the power of the Gospel

Rom. 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ:
        for IT is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;
        to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Rom. 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God
        revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Rom. 16:24 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
Rom. 16:25 Now to HIM that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel,
        and the preaching of Jesus Christ,
        according to the revelation of the mystery,
        which was kept secret since the world began,
Rom. 16:26 But now is made manifest,
        and by the scriptures of the prophets,
        according to the commandment of the everlasting God,
        made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

Chapter 6, “Formation,” may be the most important chapter in the book. This chapter fleshes out what he said in the previous chapter, that the Holy Spirit’s goal is to shape us to be, in a sense, Jesus.

One of the greatest contributions of this book is its apologetic against Christian gnosticism. That phrase should be an oxymoron but sadly it isn’t. Allen joins the chorus of recent voices who are encouraging us to revisit what the scriptures have to say about the material world (the creation itself and our own bodies as part of that creation). Body and Spirit are intricately and intimately connected. They are inextricably linked. This has not been the popular view but it is the biblical view and Allen makes as fine a case for this as anyone in chapter 6.

The second great contribution of this chapter is Allen’s theology of cooperation. How does God graciously do so much for us that we haven’t merited and yet in a sense require our participation in His ongoing work? I am not going to give you his answer to this but I will tell you he draws very effectively from Dallas Willard and N.T. Wright on this on pages 129-132.

Chapter 7, “Soaring,” marks a turn in the book. Now it gets personal.
        The Holy Spirit wants intimate connection with us.
        The Spirit is personal and so his work is personal.
        The Spirit, then, as a person
                also draws us into relationship with God and with each other.
        As we are adopted into the family of God by the work of the Spirit we take on a new identity (not just in an intellectual way but in a familial and relational way). When you become part of a new family it isn’t just something inside your head, it is also something inside your heart and is constantly being informed by a change in your experience as you transition to your new family. With God as Abba/Father we experience a new identity and a new reality. The Spirit is at work making those things reality and then working in our hearts to confirm that reality to us so we can have confidence in our new selves. All of this is done so we can invite more people into the family (mission).

Chapter 8, “Groaning,” is about suffering and the Spirit’s role in our suffering. This chapter is a mini-theology of suffering. Why do we suffer and how do we participate in the life of Christ when we suffer? The Spirit plays a role strengthening and empowering us in our weakest moments and in our most difficult situations. This is part of our formation. The Spirit did the same thing with Jesus, being present in his suffering, and so some of our deepest spiritual union with God happens in times of trial. This chapter also ends with a note on martyrs and mission. The early church often went on mission as a result of suffering and persecution. The scattered people of God took the message with them and the Spirit who empowers the message with them everywhere they went.

Chapter 9, as I mentioned above is “On Mission” and concludes the book. It serves as much as a summary of the ideas presented in the book as anything else. This chapter is the most pastoral of all of the chapters in the book. Here, Allen challenges us to be open to the Spirit and in doing so to shift our attention and our presence “out of the house” to be out among the people God wants us to be in contact with.

This book is something I wish everyone in Churches of Christs would read but even if you aren’t in our fellowship I encourage you to read it because the history, culture, theology, and pastoral nature of this book will bless you. Thank you to Dr. Allen for taking his amazing intellect, ability to write, and passion for the Spirit to share these thoughts with the rest of the body. In doing so he has made incarnate many of principles embedded in the ink on the pages of his book.
