Nashville School of Preaching and The Holy Spirit

Revised 12.09.19 New Notes moved to the TOP.

The Holy Spirit goes by several different names:

5.    the Spirit OF Truth (John 14:16, 17; 15:26) “Comforter” and “Holy Spirit” are used interchangeably in John 15:26.  7.    Helper or Comforter (John 14:26; 15:26) The Scriptures used these various terms to refer to the Holy Spirit; and one may correctly use any one of these terms to refer to the third person of the trinity.

OF is a preposition: the Spirit OF Truth is that spirit which belongs to truth

1John 4:6 We are OF God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us.
        Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit OF error.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16

What is the NAME of this "fuller" Comforter? The Paraclete in John is the Paraclete in 1 John: His name is Jesus Christ.

1Jn.2:1 MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin,
        we have an
advocate [Paraklete comforter] with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only,
        but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

The Comforter, Spirit OF Truth was Jesus as He made full deity known to them as a SINGULAR manifestation: this repudiated the pagan trinities.

Even the
Spirit OF truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth HIM not, neither knoweth him:  but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:17

I wonder why verse 18 is NEVER quoted in "holy Spirit books?"

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:18
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. John 14:19
At that day ye shall know that I am IN my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. John 14:20

Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
        and having received of the Father the PROMISE of the Holy Ghost, {Jesus post-glorification}
        HE (Jesus) hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

By the statue of Struggle are Dionysus, Orpheus the Thracian, and an image of Zeus which I mentioned just now. They are the works of Dionysius of Argos. They say that Micythus set up other offerings also in addition to these, and that they formed part of the treasures taken away by Nero.
The clear fact of history is that Christ predestinated or defined the role of Messiah's Rest both inclusively and exclusively. One of the ANTI-christian concepts then and now is that rhetoricians, song writers, singers, instrument players or other works-directed effort are by Divine Inspiration.  The ANTITHESIS of the commission of Jesus Christ in His ongoing Holy (wholly) Spirit state is common to all paganism.

Plut. De Gloria 4 eloquence, gave him this admonition, that he was no poet, for that he never composed any fables, which was the chiefest office of poetry; in regard that strange words, figures, metaphors, songs, and measures were invented to give a sweetness to things. Which admonition Pindar laying up in his mind, wrote a certain ode which thus begins:
Shall I Ismenus sing,
Or Melia, that from spindles all of gold
Her twisted yarn unwinds,
Or Cadmus, that most ancient king,
Or else the sacred race of Sparti bold,
Or Hercules, that far in strength transcends.
Which when he showed to Corinna, she with a smile replied: When you sow, you must scatter the seed with your hand, not empty the whole sack at once. And indeed we find that Pindar intermixes in his poetic numbers a collection of all sorts of fables. Now that poetry employs itself in mythology is agreed by Plato likewise. For a fable is the relation of a false story resembling truth, and therefore very remote from real actions; for relation is the image of action, as fable is the image of relation. And therefore they that feign actions fall as far behind historians as they that speak differ from those that act.

The Nashville School of Preaching follows the Lipscomb-Gospel Advocate.  For the first time in history H. Leo Boles preached a sermon at Freed Hardeman College in 1938.  In 1942 He published a book and in it he makes the Godhead into three, distinct persons each with their own skills and powers.  John Mark Hicks defines the Nashville Credo that the Godhead consists of "three centers of consciousness" and tries to make Alexander Campbell into a closet trinitarian.

Feel Free to Comment here.
Brian Cade claim: What's obvious is that you are confusing the Trinity with Tri-theism; but that's understandable coming from a guy whose dates on the Stone-Campbell movement are off by a hundred years or more.
Brian, I told you that speaking the Stone-Campbell is a lie. It is promoted by the NACC and now financed by the Disciples who are growing closer to the Catholic Mother. Not that they are so presumptive as to write an Encyclopedia the Disciples of Christ are HIRING them to write a World history of the Stone Campbell Movement.

I have proven by REAL TRUE HISTORY that the Stone-Campbell concept is psychological violence intending to intimidate the ignorant, southern rednecks.

I was forced to remind them that Christ the Rock defined the Qahal, Synnagogue or Church of Christ in the Wilderness:
It was INCLUSIVE of REST (from), Reading and rehearsing the Word of God.
It was EXCLUSIVE of Vocal or instrumental rejoicing: the Alarm or triump-over word is the Judas Principle of using elevated form of speech and instrumental music to "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter." At Pentecost Jesus Christ returned as THE HOLY SPIRIT (promised to all after death) and "poured out what you see and hear." The Pouring out of Spirit was manifest in WORDS since Jesus said my WORDS are SPIRIT and life.

ANOTHER STUDY BY DONNIE CRUZ:
Statistics from the Old Testament [KJV]:
  • "spirit" --------------------- = 244 times
  • "spirit OF" ------------------ = 86 times:
    • spirit OF = ...man...princes...Jacob...Pul...Cyrus...Tilgath...Egypt
    • spirit OF = ...knowledge...wisdom...jealousy...judgment...deep sleep
    • spirit OF = ...grace...heaviness...whoredoms
    • spirit OF = ...the gods...the holy gods...the kings...the living creature
    • spirit of = ...the beast...the ruler
  • "holy ghost" ----------------- = 0 times
  • "spirit OF God" -------------- = 14 times
  • "spirit V the Lord" --------- = 26 times
  • "holy spirit" ---------------- = 3 times
Brian, I knew/know that you believe "that God existed as three persons from eternity." That's why I wanted you to prove it from the Old Testament. However, you were not able to prove it on both counts: (1) explicity and (2) implicitly.

The Old Testament teachings regarding "the spirit of the Lord God" match those from the New Testament [which we are going to study more later on].

The word "spirit" is an improper or a common noun that is not a being nor a separate being from another being. Rather, the word "spirit" or the expression "holy spirit" is an entity that belongs to or in the possession of a living being, in this case: the Father or the Son.

The O.T. expressions:
  • ----- "spirit OF God" (14 times);
  • ----- "spirit of the Lord (26 times);
  • ----- "holy spirit" (3 times) ...
... are used properly and grammatically correctly in both the Old and New Testaments. The preposition "OF" indicates in possession of or as belonging to the Lord God. Please NOTE, Brian, that the expression "holy spirit" in Psalms and Isaiah is used in conjunction with the personal pronoun:
  • "thy" [the form of the possessive case of the personal pronoun "you"]; therefore: "thy [your] holy spirit"; or
  • "his" [belonging or pertaining to "him"]; therefore, "his holy spirit."
"Thy holy spirit" simply means the spirit that is holy [the adjective "holy" modifies the common noun "spirit"] and it [the spirit that is holy] belongs to the Lord God -- not to Brian, not to Donnie.

There is no justification for identifying "the spirit" as the Lord God. Listen to these expressions, Brian:
  • (1) If "the spirit" is God, then, "the spirit of God" would mean "God of God."
  • (2) If "the spirit" is God, then, "the spirit of the Lord" would mean "God of the Lord."
  • (3) If "the spirit" is God, then, "the spirit of Jesus Christ" would mean "God of Jesus Christ."
No, I'm not with you so far. There's a lot missing or lacking in your "progressive" [pun intended] history of the Trinity dogma.
Donnie Cruz response to Brian,

There is no confusion here between trinitarianism and tritheism. There are differences, but there is also commonness in both doctrines. Both teach that there are three separate persons or beings. That is not taught in the Scripture.

We can go for a lengthy discussion of the Trinity doctrine. But we can start with a simple premise -- by properly defining the word, the noun, the common/improper noun called "spirit." Let's expand that a bit to the expression "holy spirit" as it is commonly claimed that the "Holy Spirit of God" refers to the third person in the Trinity doctrine.

Would you be willing to accept the expressions [notice the capitalization for your benefit]:

(1) "the Spirit" and
(2) "the Holy Spirit" and
(3) "the Spirit OF God" and
(4) "the Holy Spirit OF God" and
(5) "the Spirit OF the Lord" and
(6) "the Spirit OF the Father" and
(7) "the Spirit OF Christ" and
(8) "the Spirit OF our God" and
(9) "the Spirit OF life in Christ Jesus"
(10) "the Spirit OF the living God"
(11) "the Spirit OF His Son"
(12) "the Spirit OF Jesus Christ"
(13) "the Spirit OF life from God"
(14) NOTE: The preposition "OF" denotes that from which anything proceeds or possession or ownership or "belonging to"

... are synonymous expressions that are commonly identified by Christendom as referring to the third person in the Trinity doctrine????

So, some of the simple questions for you at this point are as follows:

(1) What is the definition of the word "spirit"?
(2) Is "spirit" a noun -- a proper noun or common noun?
(3) Is the word "holy" a proper noun or an adjective in "holy spirit"?
(4) If Scripture teaches about "the spirit OF the Father" ...
(5) If Scripture teaches about "the spirit OF His Son" ...
(6) Does the Scripture teach about "the spirit OF the Holy Spirit"?
(7) Before we go any further, do you understand the question listed in items (4), (5) and (6)?
(8) In other words, (a) if the Father has a spirit and (b) if the Son has a spirit, (c) why would you say or not say that the Holy Spirit has a spirit?

Finally, in response to your comment about the Movement, truth is not only that the change agents are off but also that the change agents are the ones who are rewriting the history of the Restoration Movement.
Their paper has a massive lists of "proof text" and I will not attempt to post the full context of their proofs for the neo-trinity or tritheism of H. Leo Boles.
Lost Latter Day Saints: A Mormon Blog "In 1997, the Worldwide Church of God dropped both its objections to the doctrine of the Trinity and certain Pelagian tendencies and was accepted as a member of the National Association of Evangelicals.

"Many Latter-day Saint Philosophers consider trinity to be a description of the relationship among the members of the Godhead.

"Initially, the social analogy might appear to be no better off than the egg analogy. No member of a family is itself a family; thus, we seem to be faced again with the suggestion that no member of the Trinity is God.
Though there are three distinct portions of the egg (the shell, the yolk and the egg white), the unity of God seems to be lost as each portion of the egg is something entirely different in composition, form, function, etc.
"B) Towards a Uniform Definition
John Mark Hicks describes the revival of social trinitarianism as “one of the most significant developments in contemporary theology.” Along with this revival has come a certain amount of confusion concerning what exactly qualifies as a social model of the trinity.
The word Theology is used in the Greek Texts only to define the study and worship of Apollon or Abaddon.  You cannot study God: He speaks HIS Word or Logos and those who do not speak what He spoke is said by the Spirit OF Christ in Isaiah 8 THERE IS NO LIFE IN THEM.
In his lucid treatment of the issue, Cornelius Plantinga sets out the three conditions necessary for a theory to qualify as social and they bear repeating:

(1) The theory must have Father, Son, and Spirit as distinct centers of knowledge, will, love, and action. Since each of these capacities requires consciousness, it follows that, on this sort of theory, Father, Son, and Spirit would be viewed as distinct centers of consciousness or, in short, as persons in some full sense of that term.
This is radically opposed to all historic scholars and the Bible defined by Jesus Christ as the SON of a FATHER.  Their understanding of the Father breathing (spirit) and the Son articulates.

ALL pagans believed in a FAMILY  of gods otherwise THEY would  be lonely.   Most often they are father, mother (spirit, dove) and little infant son.  The original Babylon Mother of Harlots is defined on clay tablets older than Moses.

This story is repeated by Moses after the fall into instrumental-trinitarian idolatry at Mount Sinai. Cain is OF that wicked one after Eve (evah, abomination) claimed that she gotten a man from GOD.  This was the "pattern" for the Egyptian trinity: after Osiris lost his generator, Isis made a penis for his dead body and "got a man" named horus. The DOVE is repudiation of both Semiramis and Isis

Isis.Sex.Osiris.Bird.gif

This is the "pattern" the Catholic Churches use so that "Mary is the mother of god."

Here is the trinity worshipped under the image of the golden calves at Mount Sinai: this was a sin beyond redemption because they worshipped human images rather than the ONE GOD THE FATHER Who does not have flesh and bones. If you construct a verbal-theology image of God He has turned you over to idolatry.

This Cycle was NEVER broken and is the end-time restoration of the Babylon Mother of Harlots. She uses "lusted after fruits" as speakers, singers or instrument players.  John called them sorcerers and says they will be CAST ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.

THIS WAS THE UNIVERSAL UNDERSTANDING OF A TRINITY OR FAMILY REQUIRED TO EXIST.

On the second of these days Arueris [Horus] was born whom they call Apollo, and some call him also the elder Horus. On the third day Typhon was born, but not in due season or manner, but with a blow he broke through his mother s side and leapt forth.

There is also a tradition that Osiris and Arueris were sprung from the Sun, Isis from Hermes, and Typhon and Nephthys from Cronus. For this reason the kings considered the third of the intercalated days as inauspicious, and transacted no business on that day, nor did they give any attention to their bodies until nightfall. They relate, moreover, that Nephthys became the wife of Typhon;
   but Isis and Osiris were enamoured of each other and consorted together in [p. 35] the darkness of the womb before their birth.
   Some say that Arueris [The elder Horus] came from this union and was called the elder Horus by the Egyptians, but Apollo by the Greeks.

In another version: “Osiris represents the beginning and principle; Isis, that which receives; and Horus, the compound of both. Horus engendered between them, is not eternal nor incorruptible, but, being always in generation, he endeavours by vicissitudes of imitations, and by periodical passion (yearly re-awakening to life) to continue always young, as if he should never die.”

Moreover, many writers have held her [Isis] to be the daughter of Hermes, and many others the daughter of Prometheus, because of the belief that Prometheus is the discoverer of wisdom and forethought,

For this reason they call the first of the Muses at Hermopolis Isis as well as Justice : for she is wise, as I have said, and discloses the divine mysteries to those who truly and justly have the name of ‘bearers of the sacred vessels’ and ‘wearers of the sacred robes.’ These are they who within their own soul, as though within a casket, bear the sacred writings about the gods clear of all superstition and pedantry ; and they cloak them with secrecy, thus giving intimations, some dark and shadowy, some clear and bright, of their concepts about the gods, intimations of the same sort as are clearly evidenced in the wearing of the sacred garb.4 For this reason, too, the fact that the deceased votaries of Isis are decked with these garments is a sign that these sacred writings accompany them, and that they pass to the other world possessed of these and of naught else. It is a fact, dea, that having a beard and wearing a coarse cloak does not make philosophers, nor does dressing in linen and shaving the hair make votaries of Isis ; but the true votary of Isis [p. 13] is he who, when he has legitimately received what is set forth in the ceremonies connected with these gods, uses reason in investigating and in studying the truth contained therein.

Theotokos (/ˌθiəˈtɒkəs/; Greek: Θεοτόκος, transliterated (Greek) Theotσkos, translation (Syriac-Aramaic): ܝܳܠܕܰܬ ܐܰܠܳܗܳܐ, transliterated (Syriac): Yoldath Alloho) is the Greek title of Mary, the mother of Jesus used especially in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches. Its literal English translations include "God-bearer", "Birth-Giver of God" and "the one who gives birth to God." Less literal translations include "Mother of God" (Latin: Mater Dei).
Ditto John Mark Hicks: Andrei Rublev painted the “Holy Trinity” around 1411. He was beatified by the Russian Orthodox Church as “St. Andrei” solely for the extraordinary intensity and majesty of this icon. The image embodies the essence of Trinitarian dogmaThe icon portrays the visit of the angels to Abraham in Genesis 18 but excludes Abraham and Sarah from the picture in order to focus on the dogmatic meaning of the Trinity. The three sit around a table with a chalice as the centerpiece.

Each one is also dressed in blue to represent their equality—they are divine.
The unity and diversity of the triune life is thus pictured in vivid colors.

Notice that there is no "S" or 's" distinction in the Bible.  Because spirit means WIND and in a figurative sense the "breath" of man or God.  It identifies God as Holy (Wholly) Spirit which defines that upon which God stands.  Otherwisie spirit speaks of the Mind or Mental Disposition of that mentioned person: The Spirit OF Christ is the Mind of Christ and never a required helper.

Second, almost without exception writings on The Holy Spirit follow in the steps and quote other writers and point to a passage such as "Acts 2:38" presuming that others will follow the lead while always ignoring the context.  If people learn how to rhetorically assert, based on these heaped-up texts, they will not be disciples of Christ and may lead people into being what John called

anti-Christs who deny the One God in heaven
and One Son as personified Word of God and thereby His Son

Third, there is no historical promoter of the "trinity" concept who ever dared to suggest that "Father, Son and Spirit" are names of three separated persons.

The first person we have found that made the godhead three persons or people was H. Leo Boles. This has been the false teaching of the Lipscomb and Gospel Advocate sect of the church of Christ:

Click for some reviews of H. Leo Boles.

H. Leo Boles: The Godhead is thus composed of three coeternal and coequal persons;

they are the same in nature and essence (basic stuff),
but are different, (discrete, dissimilar, diverse) personalities (selfhood as a human).  Boles, H. Leo, The Holy Spirit, Gospel Advocate, P. 20-21  (Each is fitted for different roles.)

Their Standing (status or rank) is always first, second and third. P. 20.
The Divine Family... suggests the close relation that exists between the members of the Godhead,
and also that they constitute a family  (clan, kith, lineage, race);
it suggest that they are
closely related, that they are akin(relatives, same lineage, same tribe
This term expresses
an interest in each other and a cooperation (teamwork, collaboration, partnership) in activities. P. 21
Godhead does not speak of a GOD FAMILY or a God with three Heads.
1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God,
.....and one mediator between God and men,
.....the man Christ Jesus;

I think it is dangerous to assert that this is Paul's false teaching.

Paul said that there is ONE GOD and excludes Jesus as being ONE of the "godhead" which does not here mean Theos.

Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

Jesus was Lord or Kurios.  He was not the Almighty (Theos).  However, He was filled with the divine nature including.  Jesus was said to be the SON of God only after He was baptized: this was to fulfill all righteousneess because He took on the sins of the world.

"It would be sufficient to anathematize the Arian heresy and confess the faith confessed by the holy Fathers at Niceae, and to anathematize also those who say that the Holy Ghost is a creature and separate from the essence of Christ. (Walker, Winston, A History of the Christian Church, p. 124)

The Spirit OF Christ is the spirit which BELONGS to Christ. In 1 Corinthians 2 Paul drew an analago:

The Holy Spirit
        Is to God
what our spirit
        is to us.
But, says Paul WE have the MIND of Christ.

The Spirit is the Mind is the Heart: neither are persons inside or outside of the person to whom it belongs.

Augustine on Faith And Creed proves that no trinitarian ever believed the H.Leo Boles thesis of three separated persons.
The following text of the Apostles' Creed may be collected from this book of St. Augustin, and was current in North Africa towards the close of the fourth century.  Note that the Holy Spirit was not part of the Godhead consisting of One God the Father and one Son "begotten" of the Father. That never means that Jesus was "birthed" from God but that the WORD of God is the Son of God vested in Jesus of Nazareth:
"The head of the woman is the man, the Head of the man is Christ, and the Head of Christ is God," there is no mention of the Holy Spirit; this they affirm to be but an application of the principle that, in general,
the connection itself is not wont to be enumerated among the things which are connected with each other.
Whence, also, those who read with closer attention appear to recognize the express Trinity likewise in that passage in which it is said, "For of Him, and through Him, and in Him, are all things." "Of Him," as if it meant, of that One who owes it to no one that He is: "through Him," as if the idea were, through a Mediator; "in Him," as if it were, in that One who holds together, that is, unites by connecting.
THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST IN THE PROPHETS FULLY DEFINED THE SPIRIT AS THE WORD OF CHRIST

Isa 59:15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey.
           And the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

Isa 59:16 And he saw that there was no man,

           and his righteousness, it sustained him.

Isa 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate,
           and a helmet of salvation upon his head;
           and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
           and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

2    The Holy Spirit

The Divine Nature of the Holy Spirit

In the Old Testament the Hebrew word uniformly employed for the Spirit as referring to God’s Spirit is “ruach” meaning “breath,” “wind” or “breeze.”

Only WAY DOWN on the list does either the Hebrew or Greek speak of a person but the mental disposition of that person.

I will skip all of the views held down through history.  The man who first used the word "trias" said nothing about there being three persons (people).

The word Trinity was first used by Theophilus of Antioch to Autolycus. Trinity meant: God, His Word and His Wisdom (Spirit). It did not mean the doctrine of the Trinity in the modern sense of the word. [Tertullian also used the word

It seems to have been a man named Theophilus of Antioch who first applied the term trinity to this Biblical concept as early as 181 A.D. But it was the Anathasian Creed, completed some time in the fifth century, which stated it most clearly: "We worship one God in trinity, and trinity in unity, neither confounding the persons, nor separating the substance.

For in glory He is incomprehensible, in greatness unfathomable, in height inconceivable, in power incomparable, in wisdom unrivalled, in goodness inimitable, in kindness unutterable.
For if I say He is... Light, ......... ... I name but ........,,. ........,,....,../. .. His own work;

Most excellent is His wisdom.

By His wisdom God founded the earth;
and by
knowledge He prepared the heavens;
and by
understanding were the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the clouds poured out their dews.

God, then, having His own Word internal within His own bowels,
........... begat Him, emitting Him
........... along with His own wisdom before all things.

He had this Word as a helper in the things that were created by Him, and by Him He made all things.

He is called "governing principle", because He rules,
        and is Lord of all things fashioned by Him.
He, then, being
Spirit of God, and governing principle, and wisdom,
        and
power of the highest,
came down upon the prophets
, and through them spoke of the creation of the world and of all other things.

(This was the Spirit of Christ, 1 Peter 1:11; Revelation 19:10)

Tertullian Against Praxeas c. 213

For before all things God was alone -- being in Himself and for Himself universe, and space, and all things.
Moreover, He was alone, because there was nothing external to Him but Himself.
        Yet even not then was He alone;
        for He had with Him that which He possessed in Himself,
        that is to say, His own Reason.

For God is rational, and Reason was first in Him; and so all things were from Himself.
This Reason is His own Thought (or Consciousness) which the Greeks call logos,
        by which term we also designate Word or Discourse

and therefore it is now usual with our people, owing to the mere simple interpretation of the term,
            to say that the Word was in the beginning with God;
            although it would be more suitable to regard Reason as the more ancient;
            because God had not Word from the beginning, but He had Reason even before the beginning;
            because also Word itself consists of Reason,
            which it thus proves to have been the prior existence as being its own substance.

Not that this distinction is of any practical moment.
        For although God had not yet sent out His Word,
        He still had Him within Himself,
                 both in company with and
                 included within His very Reason,
        as He silently planned and arranged within Himself
        everything which He was afterwards about to utter through His Word.

Now, whilst He was thus planning and arranging with His own Reason,
        He was actually causing that to become Word which He was dealing with
        in the way of Word or Discourse

Thomas Campbell Trinity
It appears to be a query with some who profess to hold this doctrine, whether it be correct to use the term person when speaking of the above distinct characters in the divine essence. As to this, let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. In the mean time, all that we pretend to say in favor of this application of the term is,
that although the term person
        (which,
in relation to men, signifies a distinct intelligent agency or rational being,
                coexisting with others in the same common nature),

is not manifestly applied in the Holy Scriptures to any of the Sacred Three:
nor indeed can be so applied in strict propriety, according to its literal and obvious acceptation;
        for when applied to God, instead of meaning a distinct intelligent being
                coexisting with others in the same common nature,
        we must mean by it, if we think and speak correctly,
                one and the self-
same individual being so existing as to constitute in and to itself
                so many
distinct or different, real and relative characters, or subsistences,

each of which is but another name for the self-same individual essence or being considered as existing in the specified relation of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

(Note: Character means an actor representing a distinct group. Thus God reveals Himself in flesh, soul or life and spirit or mind eleminating all other roles. Subsistences means the status of something which exists and proves His total, undivided existence or reality.)

Personae as Father
God is Personae as Son

Personae as Spirit

For if the terms Father, Son and Spirit, be not declarative of real or essential relations, that is, of relations that have their foundation in the divine nature, and essentially or necessarily belong to it as such,

Then the only conclusion left is that:
the Scriptures do not reveal to us three distinct characters so related;
but three distinct independent divinities or Gods, necessarily self-existent,
and absolutely
independent of each other;

each and every one of them possessing the self-same properties, and of course, each of them so exactly the same in all respects, as to be absolutely undistinguishable one from another, by any means, property or attribute whatsoever;
Thomas Campbell: Direct operation of the Holy Spirit: I am not to be understood as objecting to the detection and exposure of a false and unscriptural experience, which, from your words, appears to be the thing intended; for, in your foot note, page 141, you assert, that we are taught, that "since those gifts have ceased, the. Holy Spirit now operates upon the minds of men only by the word;"and at the close of said note, you further assert, that "we are positive of one point," namely, "that the scriptures teach us not the doctrine of physical operations of the Divine Spirit in order to faith."
With these declarations as I understand them, I am quite satisfied; for, since the sacred canon has been completed, it seems to be the general opinion, at least of

    all the most eminent Protestant writers that have adverted to this subject,
    that we are not to look for any new revelations of the Spirit;
    and that, of course, his saving operations in the production of faith and repentance,
    and of every other gracious effect by which we are made partakers of a divine nature, (2 Peter i. 4.)
           is by the word of truth being put into the mind and written upon the heart, (Heb. viii. 10.)

            for this certainly is one of the exceeding great and precious promises above referred to, (2 Peter i. 4.)
            by which the Lord has graciously engaged to save his people, (Heb. viii. 10.)

As to regeneration itself, or, as it is commonly termed, the new birth, we are divinely assured, that it is effected by the word of truth.

(James i. 18.) Of his own will begat he us by the word of truth; and
(1 Peter i. 23-25.) Being born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible,
        by the word of God, which lives and abides forever.
        And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you

Tertullian an inventor of trias: But, first, I shall discuss His essential nature, and so the nature of His birth will be understood. We have already asserted that

God made the world, and all which it contains,
         by His Word, and Reason, and Power.

 It is abundantly plain that your philosophers, too,
regard the
Logos-that is, the Word and Reason-
         as the
Creator of the universe.

And we, in like manner, hold that the Word, and Reason, and Power,
..........by which we have said God made all,

have spirit as their proper and essential
substratum
, in which
the Word has in being to give forth utterances,
..........and reason abides to dispose and arrange,
..........and power is over all to execute.
We have been taught that

          He
(reason) proceeds forth from God,

and
in that procession He is generated;
so that He is the Son of God,
and is called God from unity of substance with God. For God, too, is a Spirit.

Even when the ray is shot from the sun,
..........it is still part of the parent mass; the sun will still be in the
          ray, because it is a ray of the sun-
..........there is no division of substance,
          but
merely an extension.

Thus Christ is Spirit OF Spirit, and God OF God, as light OF light is kindled.

The material matrix remains
entire and unimpaired,
though you derive from it
any number of shoots possessed of its qualities;

so, too, that which has come forth out of God
is at once God and the Son of God
, and the two are one. In this way also, as He is Spirit of Spirit and God of God,

He is made a second in manner of existence-in position, not in nature;
and He did not withdraw from the original source,
           but went forth.
This ray of God, then, as it was always foretold in ancient times, descending into a certain virgin, and made flesh in her womb,
..........is in His birth God and man united.
Campbell, Thomas, Trinity The relationship of Word to God was the same as the relationship of a word to a thought. And so this is the most common understanding among the church fathers. The the word is the SON of the speaker as FATHER then there is ot problem trying to sort out how a LITERAL son of god could be equal with the Father or of the same age.

1st. A word is a sign or representative of a thought or an idea
and is the idea in an
audible or visible form.
It is the exact image of that invisible thought
which is a perfect
secret to all the world until it is expressed.

2d. All men think or form ideas by means of words or images; so that no man can think without words or symbols of some sort.

3d. Hence it follows that the word and the idea which it represents,
        are
co-etaneous, or of the same age or antiquity.
........It is true the word may not be uttered or born
        for years or ages after the idea exists,
........but still the word is just as old as the idea.

4th. The idea and the word are nevertheless distinct from each other, though the relation between them is the nearest known on earth.
........An idea cannot exist without a word
        nor a word without an idea.

5th. He that is acquainted with the word, is acquainted with the idea
        for the idea is
wholly in the word.

By putting together the above remarks on the term word,
we have a full view of what John intended to communicate.
As a word is an exact image of an idea,
so is "The Word" an exact image of the invisible God.

As a word cannot exist without an idea, nor an idea without a word,
        so
God never was without "The Word,"
        nor "The Word" without God;

or as a word is of equal age, or co-etaneous with its idea,
        so "
The Word" and God are co-eternal.

And as an idea does not create its word nor a word its idea; so God did not create "The Word," nor the "Word" God.

WHATEVER COMES AFTER THAT IS THE INVENTION OF H. LEO BOLES.

Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
        and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, {Jesus post-glorification}
        he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
There has never been more than ONE GOD the Father in Heaven.
And Jesus of Nazareth whom God made to be both Lord and Christ.
The "Spirit" of God is His "breath" which bears thoughts which are articulated by Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus was the seed (sperm) of Abraham or David.
Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him,
        that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh,
        he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ,
        that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Notice that Paul made the relationship between Jesus of Nazareth absolutely clear and no massive accumulation of "spirit" verses should be allowed to confuse those proposing themselves as authoratative teachers.
Romans 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
        which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
Romans 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power,
        according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Jesus in His glorified state is the comforter Jesus promised when he said I will come to you.  In His glorified state, Jesus was in the STATE of Holy Spirit.   Spirit is never a god or person.  Spirit words are Figurative or a PARABLE to explain how God ALWAYS puts His WORDS into the MOUTH of a Moses, the Prophets and LASTLY into the mouth of Jesus of Nazareth.  Jesus fulfilled Holy Scripture or all of the Prophecies "Concerning Me." These prophecies made visible and audible and left for our memory by Eye and Ear Witnesses are that upon which the Church is Built or EDUCATED.
Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
        and having received of the Father the PROMISE of the Holy Ghost,
        he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens:
        but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Acts 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
        that God hath made that same Jesus,
        whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ

People have always questioned God's Wisdom in selecting a man to "make more perfect" the prophecies by the Spirit OF Christ.  They have always denied the statement that Jesus promised to be with the us until the end of the World.  He is King and High priest and Head of His body, the Church. It is dangerous to teach that the conversation between God and the Man Jesus of Nazareth needed a THIRD PERSON to mediate. In the text and historical agreement: the Spirit is that "breath" which symbolically passes through the Father and a Son.
1Timothy 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
1Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved,
        and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God,
        and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Timothy 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
1Timothy 2:7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher,
        and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;)
        a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
The Salutations over and over speak of these "two actors" only one of whom is eternal God.  John who identified Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit Comforter insisted that if you DO NOT accept this heavenly--earthly connection you are an ANTI-Christ. That may because you deny that the fulness of the Godhead dwelled in Jesus of Nazareth as "the body prepared for men."

Father, Spirit and Son or most often Father, Mother and son define all pagan triads.  Jesus defined God as the ANTITHESIS of paganism.  Father, Son and Spirit powers are given to a SINGULAR person, Jesus of Nazareth.  Thomas wanted to SEE the father which really proves that the prevailing clergy just continued the worship of the starry host (Acts 7) to which God abandoned Israel because of the musical worship of the Egyptian triad. This is Osiris, Isis and Horus.  Apis, the golden calf represented the worship of Osiris and therefore the triad.

The Scriptures Attribute Divine Personality to the Holy Spirit.

1.    Eternity (Heb. 9:14) 2.    Omniscience (1 Cor. 2:10-11) 3.    Omnipotence (Micah 3:8; Rom. 15:19; Luke 1:35) 4.    Omnipresence (Psalm 139:7-10) 5.    Holy (100 times in Bible) 6.    Sovereign (2 Cor. 3:17,18; Rev. 2:7)

Jesus in His Holy Spirit State took His blood into the Tabernacle in Heaven:

Heb 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats,
............ and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean,
............ sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

THE SPIRITUAL REALITY:

Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ,
............[who through the eternal Spirit] offered himself without spot to God,
............purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

This was Jesus in His Spiritual State offering HIMSELF.

The Work of the Spirit Reveals His Divinity

1.    creator (Gen. 1:2; Psa. 33:6; 104:30)

John Calvin

"They think that they have testimony against the Asians, to prove the Deity of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

The motive for adding the violent glosses was not based upon scholarship but upon the unholy urge to destroy the argument of others.

"but in the meantime they involve themselves in the error of Sabellius, because Moses afterwards subjoins that the Elohim had spoken, and that the holy Spirit of the Elohim rested upon the waters.

If we suppose three persons to be here denoted, there will be no distinction between them. For it will follow,

both that the Son is begotten by himself,
and that the
Spirit is not of the Father, but of himself.

For me it is sufficient that the plural number expresses those powers which God exercised in creating the world.

Moreover I acknowledge that the Scripture, although it recites many powers of the Godhead, yet always recalls us to the Father, and his Word, and spirit, as we shall shortly see.

- Father Thought
God or Deity Son Word
- Spirit Breath

But those
absurdities, to which I have alluded, forbid us with subtlety to distort what Moses simply declares concerning God himself, by applying it to the separate Persons of the Godhead.

This, however, I regard as beyond controversy, that from the peculiar circumstance of the passage itself, a title is here ascribed to God, expressive of that powers which was previously in some way included in his eternal essence.

He hath made the earth by his power,
he hath established the world by his wisdom,
and hath
stretched out the heaven by his understanding. Jer 51:15

When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens;
and he
causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth:
he
maketh lightnings with rain,
and
bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. Jer 51:16

1.    creator (Gen. 1:2; Psa. 33:6; 104:30)

This passage absolutely proves that there is one God who has Wisdom, Spirit, Word within Himself as all classical trinitarians have taught.

Psa 33:4 For the [1] word of the [3] Lord is right;
        and all his
[3] works are done in truth.
Psa 33:5 He loveth righteousness and judgment:
        the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

Psa 33:6 By the
[1] word [that which the Lord speaks]
        of the
[2] Lord were the heavens made;
        and all the host of them by the
[3] breath (spirit) of his mouth.
Psa 33:7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap:
        he layeth up the depth in
storehouses.
Psa 33:8 Let
all the earth fear the Lord:
        let all the inhabitants of the world
stand in awe of him.
Psa 33:9 For he spake, and it was done;
        he commanded, and it stood fast.

Psa 33:10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought:
        he maketh the
devices of the people of none effect.
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever,
        the
thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Psa 33:12 Blessed
        is the nation
whose God is the Lord;
        and the people whom he
hath chosen for his own inheritance.

1.    creator (Gen. 1:2; Psa. 33:6; 104:30)

This proves that the agents of God flows out from the One Universal Spirit

Psa. 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits;
        his ministers a flaming fire:
Psa. 104:5 Who laid the foundations of the earth,
        that it should not be removed for ever.
Psa. 104:6 Thou coveredst it with the deep
        as with a garment:
        the waters stood above the mountains.
Psa. 104:29 Thou hidest thy face,
        they are troubled: thou takest away their breath,
        they die,  and return to their dust.

Psa. 104:30 Thou sendest forth THY spirit, they are created:
        and thou REnewest the face of the earth.

2.  worked wonders in material universe (Job 26:13; Psalm 104:30)

Notice that speaking parables to fool the foolish, Job attributes to the ONE God all of the actions in the physical world: Reproof, Power, Understanding, Spirit, Hands, Thunder are not persons or god Beings.

He is God and the Spirit is the Spirit OF (preposition) God:

Job 26:7 HE stretcheth out the north over the empty place,
         and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
Job 26:8 HE bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds;
        and the cloud is not rent under them.
Job 26:9 HE holdeth back the face of HIS throne,
        and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
Job 26:10 HE hath compassed the waters with bounds,
        until the day and night come to an end.
Job 26:11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at HIS reproof.
Job 26:12 HE divideth the sea with his power,
        and by HIS understanding he smiteth through the proud.
Job 26:13 By HIS spirit he hath garnished the heavens;
        HIS
HAND hath formed the crooked serpent.
Job 26:14 Lo, these are parts of HIS ways: but how little a portion is heard of him?
        but the thunder of HIS power who can understand?
Job 27:1 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
Job 27:2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment;
        and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;
Job 27:3 All the while my breath is in me,
        and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;

 3.    works miracles through men (1 Cor. 12:9,11)

1Cor. 12:5 And there are differences of administrations,
        but the same Lord.
1Cor. 12:6 And there are diversities of operations,
        but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

The One God in Heaven and one Jesus Whom God made to be both Lord and Christ as The Holy Spirit, Priest, King gives the

1Cor. 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1Cor. 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom;
        to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1Cor. 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1Cor. 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1Cor. 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit,
        dividing to every man severally as he will.

This SPIRIT is Jesus Christ in His changed state.

Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
Ephesians 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Ephesians 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace
        according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith,
        When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,
        and gave gifts unto men.

You can be a false teacher and guide others into blaspheming the Spirit OF Christ by just listing a basket full of passages all of which repudiate the thesis.

4.  physical life given by the Holy Spirit (Job 27:3; 33:4) 5.    has foreknowledge (Acts 1:16; 11:27,28) 6.    regenerator (2 Cor. 3:6; Tit. 3:5; Rom. 15:16) 7.    able to resurrect (Rom. 8:11; 1 Pet. 3:18,19) 8.    revelation and inspiration (Gal. 1:11-12; 2 Pet. 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:16-17) 9.    sanctifying (2 Thess. 2:13)

Again, Job is using "spirit" in its absolute sense unless otherwise specified.

Job 27:1 Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
Job 27:2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment;
        and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; [note parallelism]
Job 27:3
        All the while my BREATH  is in me,
        and the SPIRIT [breath] of God is in my nostrils; [note parallelism]
Job 27:4 My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.

Notice in the next "proof text" that OF is a preposition: the Spirit OF God is the Spirit which BELONGS to God in this parable.

Job 33:1 Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.
Job 33:2 Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
Job 33:3 My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart:
        and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
Job 33:4
        The Spirit of God hath made me,
        and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. [note parallelism]
Job 33:5 If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

The Spirit in Relation to the Godhead

We consider next the Spirit of God in relation to God Himself in the Old Testament. Here there are several points to be noted.

The first is that there is no indication of a belief that the Spirit of God was a material particle or emanation from God. Biblical writers retained a very clear distinction between spirit and flesh or other material forms. Again we observe in the Old Testament both an identification of God and the Spirit of God, and also a clear distinction between them.

Literally Spirit means WIND: figuratively it means BREATH or that which inspires. God IS Spirit.

Classical trinitarians agree: there is a difference between a man and his breath (spirit) and there is a difference and separation betwen one's spirit and one's articulated words. There is a difference betwee ME and MY spirit or life but WE are not separate people.

In "The Spirit OF the Lord" of is a preposition.  The spirit OF wisdom is not another being but the spirit or mental disposition of wisdom. The Spirit or Breath emanates from the "mouth" of God Who as the Spirit OF Christ speaks ONLY through the prophets and apostles.  Jesus warned that truth had been hidden in parables from the foundation of the world.

1Kings 22:22 And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith?
        And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a LYING spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.
        And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.

1Pet. 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
2Chronicles 18:21 And he said, I will go out,
        and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.

        And the LORD said, Thou shalt entice him,
        and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
2Chronicles 18:22 Now therefore, behold, the LORD
         hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophe
ts,
        and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee

Psa. 104:4 Who maketh his angels spirits;
        his ministers a flaming fire:

2Samuel 22:8 Then the earth shook and trembled;
        the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
2Samuel 22:9 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils,
            and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
2Samuel 22:10 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
2Samuel 22:11 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly:
        and he was seen upon the wings of the wind. [spirit]
H7307 rϋach roo'-akh From H7306 ; wind;
        by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible (or even violent) exhalation;
        figuratively life, anger, unsubstantiality;
        by extension a region of the sky;
        by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being
                (including its expression and functions):

2Samuel 22:12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him,
        dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
2Samuel 22:13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
2Samuel 22:14 The LORD thundered from heaven,
         and the most High uttered his voice.
2Samuel 22:15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them;
        lightning, and discomfited them.
2Samuel 22:16 And the channels of the sea appeared,
        the foundations of the world were discovered,
        at the rebuking of the LORD,
        at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

2 Samuel 22.16
et apparuerunt effusiones maris et revelata sunt fundamenta orbis ab increpatione Domini ab inspiratione spiritus furoris eius

•    The identification is seen in Ps 139:7 where the omni-presence of the Spirit is declared, and in Isa 63:10; Jer 31:33; Ezek 36:27.

The spirit OF a Being is not another person.
Psalms 139:7 Whither shall I go from THY spirit?
        or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed HIS holy Spirit:
        therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
Isaiah 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people,
        saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock?
        where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

4    The Holy Spirit

•    In a great number of passages, however, God and the Spirit of God are not thought of as identical, as in Gen 1:2; 6:3; Neh 9:20; Ps 51:11; 104:29 f.

Neh 9:18 Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said,
        This is thy God that brought thee up out of Egypt, and had wrought great provocations;

Neh 9:19 Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.

Neh 9:20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.

"For this reason, the Holy Spirit has frequently been personified in Scripture, identifying it with God, and so it is personified as he.

"However, if the Holy Spirit were actually a person it should be rendered as he in every place where the word is referred to; but it is not. It is sometimes rendered in the neuter. In Romans 8:16, Paul writes: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit." The neuter, itself is used, and this is in accord with the Greek text, as any Greek scholar will acknowledge.

"To personify inanimate objects is normal in Scripture. Wisdom is represented as a woman (Proverbs 9:1), mammon is described as a friend (Luke 16:9), sin is personified as a slave-owner (Romans 6:16), the Holy Spirit as a comforter (John 14:26), expressing the spirit of Truth. So Micah declared: "I am full of power by the spirit of the Lord" (Micah 3:8). The prophets were moved by the spirit to record the Scriptures (Nehemiah 9:20; 2 Peter 1:21), and God used the same means to speak to Israel through His Son (Hebrews 1: 1). For the rest of the quote Click Here.

"Personification.-- This is a figure of speech by which inanimate beings are spoken of as animated, or endowed with life and volition; animals are endowed with feelings akin to those of men.

"This is well suited to an imaginary condition of mind, and therefore frequently employed in Hebrew Scriptures. Indeed, it is now a staple in the market of communication, and we use it so commonly ourselves that whe have almost ceasted to speak of it as a figure of speech." (Prof. D. R. Dungan, Hermeneutics, p. 324, Gospel Light Publishing)

Indeed, there are no Old Testament passages which compel us to understand the complete New Testament doctrine of the Trinity and the distinct personality of the Spirit in the New Testament sense.

There are, however, numerous Old Testament passages which are in harmony with the Trinitarian conception and prepare the way for it, such as Ps 139:7; Isa 63:10; 48:16; Hag 2:5; Zec 4:6. The Spirit is grieved, vexed, etc., and in other ways is conceived of personally, but as He is God in action, God exerting power, this was the natural way for the Old Testament writers to think of the Spirit.

Note that this is a parallelism: The Spirit OF God is theJoh or mental disposition of God.

Ps 139:6  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Ps 139:7  Whither shall I go from THY spirit?
        or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
Ps 139:8  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there:
        if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

Isa 63:9 In all their affliction he was afflicted,
        and the angel of his presence saved them:
        in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
        and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

Psa 106:12 Then believed they his words; they sang his praise Psa 106:12

Isa 63:10  But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit:
        therefore he was turned to be their enemy,
        and he fought against them.

Psa 106:13  They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

Isa 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying,
        Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock?
        where is he that put HIS holy Spirit within him?

1Corinthians 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

As a beast goeth down into the valley,
        the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest;
        so didst thou lead thy people,
        to make thyself a glorious name. Isa 63:14

Doubtless thou art our father,
        though Abraham be ignorant of us,
        and Israel acknowledge us not: thou,
        O Lord, art our father, our redeemer;
        thy name is from everlasting. Isa 63:16

Haggai says nothing about a separated Holy Spirit person being with Israel.

Haggai 2:5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

Daniel 7:15 I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body,
        and the visions of my head troubled me.
2Corinthians 2:13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

Colossians 1:8 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.
Colossians 2:5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

A definition of the Trinity is not easy to construct. Some are done by stating several propositions. Others err on the side either of oneness or threeness. One of the best is Warfield’s:

John 10:30: “I and the Father are One,” beautifully states this balance between the diversity of the Persons and the unity of the essence.

The context is to prove to the Jews that Jesus' teachings and the Father's teachings are UNUS a Ad unum, all together, unanimously, to a man, without exception: In unum, into one, to one place, together: Of that which is common to several persons or things, one and the same.

A Father AND a SON can never be numerically the SAME PERSON.

“I and the Father” clearly distinguishes two Persons, and the verb, “We are,” is also plural. But, said the Lord, “We are One,” and “one” is neuter; that is, one in nature or essence, but not one Person (which would require masculine form). Thus the Lord distinguished Himself from the Father and yet claimed unity and equality with the Father.

All pagan's believed in a trinity of father, mother (spirit) and son.  God made His nature by placing all authority under the NAME of the father, spirit and son.  Name is singular.

That's True but only One is a Divine Being and One Jesus of Nazareth.

1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God,
        and one mediator between God and men,
        the man Christ Jesus;
When the One God made Jesus of Nazareth TO BE both Lord and Christ, the Spirit OF Christ who breathed on the prophets,  Christ came fully in Jesus of Nazareth. If you deny that the Spirit of the ONE GOD dwelled in or upon the MAN CHRIST JESUS, John identifies you as an anti-christ.

Acts 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words;
        Jesus of Nazareth,
        a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs,
        which God did BY him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Acts 10:38 How God anointed
        Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power:
        who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil;
        for God was with him.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
        that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified,
        both Lord and Christ.

Rom. 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,
        separated unto the gospel of God,
Rom. 1:2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
Rom. 1:3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
        which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
Rom. 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power,
        according to the spirit OF holiness,
        by the resurrection from the dead:

Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not:
        the works that I do in my Fathers name,
        they bear witness of me. John 10:25

But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. John 10:26

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: John 10:27

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10:28

My Father,
        which
gave them me, is GREATER than all;
        and no man is able to pluck them out of my Fathers hand. John 10:29

I and my Father are one. John 10:30

If Jesus does His work in the Father's Name then they are not ONE person nor are they just on friendly terms.  Jesus as the Son had no words to speak other that what He heard from the Father.

Unus adverbal a.  Ad unum, all together, unanimously, to a man, without exception:
2.  Of that which is common to several persons or things, one and the same.
uno ore, with one voice, all together, unanimously:
John 12:45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
John 12:47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
       hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken,
        the same shall judge him in the last day.
John 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself;
        but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment,
         what I should say, and what I should speak.
John 12:50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting:
      whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

The word "trinity" is not found in the Bible but is certainly a Biblical concept. The word refers to the concept that God is one in essence or substance and three in person. God is one but is known as Father, Son, and Spirit.

Person as "people" was invented by H. Leo boles. The word is PERSONAE: God makes his SINGULAR nature made known or view as one person. Otherwise, we would see a father god, a spirit god and a son god.

The Trinity

5    The Holy Spirit

The Scriptures teach clearly that God is one and there is no other: •    Deut. 6:4 "the Lord our God is one Lord" •    Mark 12:29 "the Lord our God, the Lord is one" •    Deut. 4:35,36 "the Lord is God; there is none else besides him" •    Isa. 43:10,11 "before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I even I, am

Jehovah, and there is no savior." •    Isa. 44:6 "I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God." •    Isa. 45:5 "I am God, and there is none else; besides me there is no God." •    1 Cor. 8:4,6 "there is no God but one. . .yet to us there is one God." •    Rom. 3:30 "God is one."

The terms "Father, Spirit (mother) and son is common in all pagan triads.  When Jesus declared Himself the Son of God:

John 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?
         he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Much of the teachings of Jesus are ANTITHETICAL to the pagan view of God: all pagans believed in triads or families of triads.
Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
        All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
        baptizing them in the name [singular] of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
        and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Peter clearly understood that Jesus of Nazareth had been made BOTH Lord and Christ and been given ALL power on earth.  He and the rest of the Bible and early history understood that to be:
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
        Repent, and be baptized every one of you
        in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
        and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
There is only ONE GOD in Heaven and Jesus of Nazareth whom God made to be both Lord and Christ: Messiah had to be the Seed of Abraham to fulfil prophecy.

In what Alexander Campbell and others called the "economic trinity" Jesus Christ fills all of the anticipated roles in PERSONS of Father, Son and Spirit.
John 16:3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
John 16:15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
John 16:16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
John 16:17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
John 16:23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

Yet we have just as positive teaching that the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Spirit is God.

Father

1 Cor. 8:6 Gal. 1:1 John 6:27 Phil. 2:11 John 20:17 Mark 14:36 John 11:41

This define clearly the ONE God and ONE Lord.

1Corinthians 8:5 For though there be that are called gods,
        whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
1Corinthians 8:6 But to us there is but one God, [Theos] the Father,
                 of whom are all things, and we in him;
        and one Lord [Kurios] Jesus Christ,
                by
whom are all things, and we by him.
The MAN Jesus of Nazareth was NOT either Lord or Christ until God gave Him those assignments.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly,
        that God
        hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified,
         both Lord and Christ.

John identifies as anti-christ those who deny this ONE GOD and ONE LORD, the man Jesus of Nazareth. It is a denial of the fullness of Deity which dwelled IN Jesus of Nazareth to make him part of a family of gods.
Galatians 1:1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man,
        but by Jesus Christ,
        and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)
Galatians 1:2 And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:
Galatians 1:3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father,
        and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins,
        that he might deliver us from this present evil world,
         according to the will of God and our Father:

John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
        Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles,
         but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth,
        but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
        which the Son of man shall give unto you:
         for him hath God the Father sealed.
John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
        the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?
John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them,
        This is the work of God,
         that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,
        and given him a name which is above every name:
Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Philippians 2:11 And that every tongue should
        confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
        to the glory of God the Father.

John 20:16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him,
        Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her,
        Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father:
        but go to my brethren, and say unto them,
         I ascend unto my Father, and your Father;
        and to my God, and your God.

Mark 14:35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that,
         if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Mark 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee;
        take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

John 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid.
        And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
John 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always:
         but because of the people which stand by I said it,
        that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Son

Holy Spirit

Acts 5:3,4 Matt. 28:19 2 Cor. 13:14 2 Cor. 3:17,18 1 Cor. 2:10-13 Rom. 8:9,11

YES: I and the Father” clearly distinguishes two Persons,
         Yet we have just as positive teaching that the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Spirit is God.

BUT NO: We are not saying that one God is three Gods; we are saying that there is but one infinite Spirit Being, but within that one Spirit essence there are three personal distinctions,
        each of which may be, and is called God.
        Each is capable of loving and being loved by the others (John 14:31).
        Each has a distinct part to play in the creation of the universe,
        and in the creation and salvation of mankind.

In this proof text with no context or connection, Jesus loves the Father and therefore follows the direction of the Father whose Mind dwelled in Jesus.

John 14:30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh,
        and hath nothing in me.
John 14:31 But that the world may know
        that I
[Jesus made to be both lord and Christ]
        love the Father; [The One Universe God]

        and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

In Matt. 3:16,17 while Jesus was being baptized into the Jordan River, the Father spoke from heaven; and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove.

John 12:29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered:
        others said, An angel spake to him.
John 12:30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

We are compelled to distinguish each of these persons. In John 15:26 Jesus said, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth."

John 15:23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
John 15:24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did,
        they had not had sin: but now have they both seen
        and hated both me and my Father.
John 15:25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law,
        They hated me without a cause.
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come,
        whom I will send unto you from the Father,
        even the Spirit OF truth, which proceedeth from the Father,
        he shall testify of me:
John 15:27 And ye also shall bear witness,
         because ye have been with me from the beginning.

THE SAME JOHN WARNED

1John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
        And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father,
        Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Timothy 2:5 For there is one God,
        and one mediator between God and men,
        the man Christ Jesus;
Jesus as the "another" Comforter different in that He is now The Holy Spirit and continues the work of Jesus of Nazareth in the flesh.  The Spirit OF Christ does not speak on its own but the same Jesus communicates in Spirit form.
1John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only,
        but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him,
         if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

Here is the METHOD by which WE dwell in the FATHER and the FATHER and SON dwells in us. The only EVIDENCE of that indwelling is:

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. John 14:21

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? John 14:22

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John 14:23

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come,
        whom I will send unto you from the Father,
        even the Spirit OF truth,  [of is a preposition]
        which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Again we clearly see distinctions between the persons of the Godhead: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Other passages which show this distinction: Matt. 28:19; Acts 7:55; Rom. 11:36; 8:11; Eph. 2:18,21,22; Gal. 4:6; Heb. 9:14; and Jude 20,21. Eph. 4:4-6 makes it clear that there is one God and Father, one Lord, and one Spirit.

These Divine Three are equal. This does not mean we cannot arrange them with the Father first, the Son second, and the Spirit third. This is not a difference in glory, power, or length of existence, but simply one of order.

6    The Holy Spirit

The concept of the economical Trinity concerns administration, management, actions of the Persons, or the opera ad extra (“works outside,” that is, on the creation and its creatures).

For the Father this includes the works of electing (1 Peter 1:2), loving the world (John 3:16), and giving good gifts (James 1:17).

For the Son it emphasizes His suffering (Mark 8:31), redeeming (1 Peter 1:18), and upholding all things (Heb. 1:3).

For the Spirit it focuses on His particular works of regenerating (Titus 3:5), energizing (Acts 1:8), and sanctifying (Gal. 5:22-23).

Even with all the discussion and delineation that we attempt in relation to the Trinity, we must acknowledge that it is in the final analysis a mystery. We accept all the data as truth even though they go beyond our understanding.

7    The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit as a Person

The Scriptures consider the Holy Spirit as a person, a spirit, and Divine. The Holy Spirit should never be considered as some kind of "force" or influence, as if he had no personality.

The Holy Spirit is a Person

•    He speaks (1 Tim. 4:1) •    He witnesses (John 15:26) •    He teaches (John 14:26; Luke 12:11-12; 1 Cor. 2:13) •    He guides (John 16:13; Acts 16:6-10) •    He makes intercession (Rom. 8:26) •    He possesses a mind (Rom. 8:27) •    He has knowledge (1 Cor. 2:11) •    He has affections (Rom. 15:30) •    He possesses a will (1 Cor. 12:11) •    He can be grieved (Eph. 4:30; Isa. 63:10) •    He can be despised (Heb. 10:29) •    He can be resisted (Acts 5:3)

10    The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit and Inspiration

14    The Holy Spirit

Verbal Inspiration

In verbal inspiration, inspired men "guided by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21) did not have to think of what words that they should speak or write, for it was given to them "in that hour" what to say or write (Matthew 10:19). They were told, "Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand how to answer" (Luke 21:14). In such situations, they were "not the ones speaking, but" it was the "Spirit of the Father" speaking through them (Matthew 10:20). They were "filled with the Holy Spirit," and on occasion spoke "in other languages, as the Spirit was inspiring them" (Acts 2:4).

A startling example of verbal inspiration, "words taught by the Spirit" (1 Corinthians 2:13),

As my spirit knows the mental condition of my thoughts and intents, Paul defines God's Spirit in the same sense to instruct our feeble mind

1Cor. 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by HIS Spirit:
        for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1Cor. 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man,
        save the spirit of man which is in him?
even so the things of God knoweth no man,
         but the Spirit of God.

Jesus in HIS post-glorified state came at Pentecost and "poured out what you see and hear." He promised as Spirit that He would guide them into all truth.  Paul had to see and hear the risen Lord to qualify as an apostle.  The SPIRIT LORD appeared to Paul

Acts 26:14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
Acts 26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
Acts 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet:
        for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose,
        to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen,
        and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

 This has the same meaning as to the Apostles:
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

1Cor. 2:12 Now we have received,
        not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God;
        that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
1Cor. 2:13 Which things also we speak,
        not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth,
        but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1Cor. 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1Cor. 2:15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
1Cor. 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?
        But we have the MIND of Christ.

15    The Holy Spirit

In plenary inspiration, inspired men "guided by the Holy Spirit" (2 Peter 1:21), did think of what words that they would speak or write. "The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem," were not directly given, but were "pondered and sought out" by Solomon, with the result that he "set in order many proverbs" (Ecclesiastes 1:1; 12:9). "The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, . . . words of truth" (Ecclesiastes 12:10).

 Proverbs 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: (Convert)
        behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you,
       [meaning] I will make known my words unto you.
Proverbs 1:24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand,

SPIRIT NEVER SPEAKS OF A "PEOPLE": ALL OF THOSE WHO CLAIM GUIDANCE ARE BEING LED BY AN EVIL SPIRIT: SATAN.

-Spīrĭtus I. fin.; dat. SPIRITO, Inscr. Orell. 3030; gen., dat., and abl. plur. only eccl. and late Lat., e. g. spirituum, Vulg. Marc. 6, 7: “spiritibus,” Aug. Serm. 216, 11 fin.; Vulg. Luc. 8, 2), m. spiro, a breathing or gentle blowing of air, a breath, breeze (syn.: aura, flatus).
        2.
The breath of a god, inspiration: “haec fieri non possent, nisi ea uno divino et continuato spiritu continerentur,” by a divine inspiration, Cic. N. D. 2, 7, 19; 3, 11, 28; cf.: “poλtam quasi divino quodam spiritu inflari,” id. Arch. 8, 18

        A. (Class.) A haughty spirit, haughtiness, pride, arrogance; also, spirit, high spirit, energy, courage (esp. freq. in the plur.; syn. animi). “longissima est complexio verborum, quae volvi uno spiritu potest,” id. de Or. 3, 47, 182: “quos idem Deus de suis spiritibus figuravit,”
Figūro , āvi, ātum, 1, v. a. figura,
I. to form, fashion, shape (rare but class.).
2. In rhet. lang., to adorn with figures: “tam translatis verbis quam propriis figuratur oratio,” Quint. 9, 1, 9:
B. Trop., of speech, figurative (not in Cic., but very freq. in Quint.): oratio eskhēmatismenē,

Quint. Inst. 9 1.9 It is best therefore in dealing with these topics to adopt the generally accepted terms and to understand the actual thing, by whatever name it is called. But we must note the fact that trope figure are often combined in the expression of the same thought, since figures are introduced just as much by the metaphorical as by the literal use of words.
2. Spiritus, personified, a spirit (late Lat.); so, “esp., Spiritus Sanctus or simply Spiritus,” the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit, Cod. Just. 1, 1, 1; Aus. Ephem. 2, 18: “jurare per Deum et per Christum et per Spiritum Sanctum,” Veg. 2, 5: “nocens ille Spiritus,” an evil spirit, Lact. 4, 27, 12: “Spiritus nigri,” evil spirits, Sedul. Carm. 3, 41.
You will notice (most have not) that in the salutations in the epistles the term "The Holy Spirit" is very rare and two fold "persons" are defined with naming a spirit which is that "breath" which flows between Father (thought) and Son (word).
1Peter 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
1Peter 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

through sanctification of the Spirit [his spirit],
        unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ:
        Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father
        of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy
        hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1Peter 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently,
         who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1Peter 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
1Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves,
        but unto us they did minister the things,
        which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you
        with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Paul defines the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of the Lord
2Corinthians 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
2Corinthians 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
2Corinthians 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
2Corinthians 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2Corinthians 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
2Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is,
        there is liberty.
2Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
        are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit OF the Lord.
The Spirit of Christ which guided the Prophets also guided Jesus of Nazareth to make these prophecies more certain:
Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren
         that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God:
         for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy
16    The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit and Conversion I and II

 I will not address this in this paper since the BURDEN of the whole Nashville, LU, Boles theology rest on the the thesis that the Spirit OF Christ is another "person."

17    The Holy Spirit

When the UNholy spirits were free of sin they had A Holy Spirit.  The same Peter called it A good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception of the Word.

Alexander Campbell and others understand that A holy spirit is OUR unholy spirit which has been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ and not His "spirit." "This is...understood by every attentive reader. The original phrase is hagiasmos pneumatos, and is found only in II. Thess. ii. 13; I. Pet. i. 2. In both places it appears to refer to the sanctification of the spirit of believers.   It is literally rendered "sanctification [or holiness] of spirit." There is no article in the original and no epithet that suggests the Holy Spirit in either passage.

God has chosen men to salvation through (or by) holiness of spirit;

not through the holiness of his Spirit,
        but through the holiness of their spirit.

When Jesus prayed (John xvii.) for the sanctification or holiness of his disciples,
          it was through the truth: "Sanctify them through the truth;
          thy word is truth."

The belief of the truth is, therefore, by Paul associated with this holiness or sanctification of spirit.

The Spirit of God is frequently denominated in these days, "the Sanctifier." Let it be granted that it is the Spirit that sanctifies or sets apart men to God, still it must be argued from the Record
        that he sanctifies them only through the truth or gospel believed.
A sanctified unbeliever is inconceivable;
        and, as "without holiness [or sanctification of spirit] no man can see the Lord;
        so, without faith, there can be no holiness, and no action acceptable to God.

All persons sanctified to God to any high office or function, were anointed, and thus consecrated to his special service. So all Christians, being priests,

        are anointed or sanctified by the Holy Spirit
       [135] through the obedience of the truth,
        and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus,
        cleansing their consciences from dead works to serve the living God."

31    The Holy Spirit

15. That they church or kingdom might be established. The Holy Spirit came (Acts 2:1-4) upon them with power; and the kingdom came “with power” (Mark 9:1; Acts 1:8).

Acts 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, t

IV. the spirit of God 2. spirit of man,
The "breath" of God is that which God "breaths" into selected prophets and apostles: Peter called it the Spirit OF Christ which breathed on the Prophets.
This was proof that Jesus had been glorified and given the promise of A Holy Spirit state and HE returned at Pentecost--as promised--and poured out that which you SEE and HEAR.
Mark 9:2 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John,
        and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves:
        and he was transfigured before them.

Candĭdus , a, um, adj. candeo, 2. Hence, an epithet of the gods or persons transformed to gods: “Cupido,” radiant, Cat. 68, 134: “Liber,” Tib. 3, 6, 1: “Bassareus,” Hor. C. 1, 18, 11 (cf. id. ib. 1, 2, 31): “Daphnis,” Verg. E. 5, 56 Wagn.—

16. That they might be inspired. They spoke as the Spirit gave them utterance. The gospel is preached through the power of the Holy Spirit sent from Heaven (1 Pet. 1:12). All Scripture is given by inspiration (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

1Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things,
        which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you
        with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
This Spirit of Christ was vested in Jesus of Nazareth when the ONE GOD made him to be both Lord and Christ: He returned as The Holy Spirit and continued the work Jesus had begun on earth. Jesus would have to be given His Holy Spirit form in order to guide the scattered evangelists.

Because Christ is The Holy Spirit (1 Jn 1) that which He breaths out IS Spirit.
John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth;
        the flesh profiteth nothing:
        the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
John 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not.
        For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not,
        and who should betray him.
The "never musical" passages DEFINE the Spirit of Christ with the Word of Christ

Plutarch Life of Antony
At any rate, when Antony made his entry into Ephesus,
        women arrayed like Bacchanals,
        and men  p189 and boys like Satyrs and Pans, led the way before him,
and the city was full of ivy and •thyrsus-wands and harps and pipes and flutes, the people hailing him as Dionysus Giver of Joy and Beneficent.  [in 58bc] For he was such, undoubtedly, to some; but to the greater part he was Dionysus Carnivorous and Savage.

For he took their property from well-born men
        and bestowed it on flatterers and scoundrels.
From many, too, who were actually alive,
        men got their property by asking him for it on the plea that the owners were dead.

The house of a man of Magnesia he gave to a cook,
        who, as we are told, had won reputation by a single supper.
But finally, when he was imposing a second contribution on the cities,
        Hybreas, speaking in behalf of Asia, plucked up courage to say this:
        "If thou canst take a contribution twice in one year,
        thou hast power also to make summer for us twice, and harvest-time twice."
These words were rhetorical, it is true, and agreeable to Antony's taste;
        but the speaker added in plain and bold words that Asia had given him two hundred thousand talents;
            "If," said he, "thou hast not received this money,
            demand it from those who took it;
                    but if thou didst receive it, and hast it not, we are undone."
This speech made a powerful impression upon Antony; for he was ignorant of most that was going on,
         not so much because he was of an easy disposition,
        as because he was simple enough to trust those about him.
