THIS IS THE DIRECT COMMAND: it cannot be understood by those who have tampered with the word--especially with an attack against people who are doing the best they can and don't know just how to resist people who lie, cheat and steal their church house.

2Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season,
        out of season; reprove, rebuke,
exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers,
having itching ears; [eager for combat, pleasure, to be wanton]

HERE IS PROOF THAT YOU WILL NOT ENDURE SOUND DOCTRINE:

2Timothy 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth,
and shall be turned unto fables.

John T. Willis 2. "Sing" is vocal; "make melody" is instrumental. Psalms 33:2-3; 144:9; 149:1, 3 make this crystal clear. Amos 5:23 further verifies this reality.  People forget that God turned Israel over to worship the starry host because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. The Levites were under the KING and the COMMANDERS of the army: they made war and not worship. We will examine these passages in context.

2.20.11

Jay Guin is a good lawyer: he has come up with a new foundational authority for instrumental music.  However, his premise that God commanded the king, kingdom, temple, animal sacrifices and the associated instrumental noise is wrong: there is no historic scholarship among the church fathers that God commanded that which was the result of "firing" God and demanding a human king.

Clyde Symonete:
What was God’s intent for the worship of the New Testament Church? The history of the post-apostolic church helps us understand our Christian heritage, but history does not necessarily reflect God’s intent. History is often a record of humanity’s disobedience to God.

The Old Testament is a history of the Hebrew and other people.  Worship literally meant to fall on your face: when you grasp that God is God and we are not you fall literally or spiritually: you have no more ability to define God than a dog which worships His master without any set of rituals.

The Israelites who were no better than other nations God worked with
Amos 9:7 Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

Amos 9:8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

The LOWway: The Jacob-cursed tribe of Levi was burdened with the Civil-Military-Priestly system where sacrificial systems belonged to the king and not to the poor deprived by supplying animals.

The HIGHway:
Christ ordained the Qahal, synagogue or church in the wilderness: while no one is ever said to have "assembled for worship" (which would be legalism) the reading and rehearsing the Word of God was the only way to worship A God who needs nor wants people to slaughter innocent animals to fulfill their blood and flesh lust. The synagogue always existed and even in a more organized form when Jesus attended you will never find--in the Bible--any variation from that church in the wilderness.  Church was a School (only) of the Word (only) of Chist (only)

If Christ the Spirit intended any form of music during "Bible class" assurely some one in history should show where anyone every synagogued to sing or play instruments. Paul said of the Corinthians "your assemblies do more harm than good" when the Corinthians wanted to sing (never tuneful) their own songs.

Christ in Spirit ordained the Qahal, synagogue or Church of Christ in the Wilderness. This was to QUARANTINE the godly people from the LEVI tribe which God used to carry out the WORSHIP OF THE STARRY HOST because of musical idolatry.

That Idolatry is defined as engaging in musical polluting the REST day.
Christ in Spirit defined it as a TERMINAL sin for which ISRAEL nationally was sent back to Babylon.

Clyde Symonette:
God’s stated intent for New Covenant praise is found in the pages of Old Testament Scripture. Prior to our analysis of those scriptures, however, it is important for us to understand the historical context of the words spoken in those passages. Accordingly, I will begin with a brief history of events leading up to Israel’s non-instrumental tradition.

The use of instruments was musical idolatry for which God removed The Book of The Covenant of Grace and gave them a firey law. He sentenced them to return to "beyond Babylon" and gave them a head start by abandoning them to the worship of thes starry host. Jacob warned the godly people not to attend the assemblies or make a covenant with Levi. God used them as the Civil-Military-Priestly complex.  He quarantined the godly people FROM the temple.

These people never made MUSIC but NOISE.

Christ OUTLAWED  vocal or instrumental rejoicing for the Synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness. The Godly people remained close at home and did synagogue which means to READ and REHEARSE the Word of God.
That continued and was endorsed by Jesus and commanded by the word EKKLESIA. Both ekklesia and synagogue were for HEARING information supplied by a HIGHER AUTHORITY. The synagogue had no praise service: even common decency and revereence would know not to disturb the people when God's Word is being PREACHED by being  READ.

(Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene Fathers, VII, p. 511).

12. From such causes as these this also has followed, with your connivance, that the wanton fancy of artists has found full scope in representing the bodies of the gods, and giving forms to them, at which even the sternest might laugh.
        And so Hammon is even now formed and represented with a ram's horns;

Saturn with his crooked sickle, like some guardian of the fields,

and pruner of too luxuriant branches;

the son of Maia with a broad-brimmed travelling cap, as if he were preparing to take the road, and avoiding the sun's rays and the dust;

Liber with tender limbs, and with a woman's perfectly free and easily flowing lines of bodyLit., "and most dissolved with the laxity of feminine liquidity."

Venus [Lucifer, Zoe], naked and unclothed, just as if you said that she exposed publicly, and sold to all comers, the beauty of her prostituted body;

Vulcan with his cap and hammer, but with his right hand free, and with his dress girt up as a workman prepares for his work;

the Delian god with a plectrum and lyre, gesticulating like a player on the cithern and an actor about to sing;

the king of the sea with his trident, just as if he had to fight in the gladiatorial contest: nor can any figure of any deity be found which does not have certain characteristics bestowed on it by the generosity of its makers.

No, Christ defined ALL spiritual content in the PROPHETS beginning with Samuel.
In Isaiah 50 Christ warned about how people would PROFANE Him forever: by smiting and PLUCKING Him

In Isaiah 55 Christ defined the FREE WATER of the WORD for which false preachers CORRUPT by selling lerning at retail. The WORD of Spirit IS Spirit and Life. Those assuming the role of preacher had better be very careful that they are passing the Words of Christ to the disciples without modification.

In Isaiah 58 Christ defined the futur REST which in Greek is PAUO. He outlawed seeking our own pleasure or SPEAKING OUR OWN WORDS.

See that the Laded Burden is exactly the king of performance, arousal music being promoted to LADE BURDENS which they boast about as using instruments to GET THE ENERGY LEVEL UP. It works and that is why it is called witchcraft or sorcery.

Clyde Symonette: From Praise to Lamentations

Israel’s worship was not always non-instrumental. In fact, Scriptures reveal Israel’s use of instrument in worship prior to the time of David; under David’s rule, however, praise with instruments was incessant.

Ex. 15:20 - Pre-Davidic – “Miriam, the prophetess, sister of Aaron and Moses, took a timbrel in her hand and led the women in her song of praise.”

Here is what God thought of her "revelations."
Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do. Deut 24:8

Here is what Miriam did which was common to what the Israelites did in Egypt and never ceased to do.

Clyde Symonette:When David became king of Israel, he conquered Jerusalem and brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem with much fanfare. Scripture records,
(2 Samuel 6:5 NIV) David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.
I remind you that God turned Israel over to worship the starry host and sentenced them beyond Babylon BECAUSE  of musical idolatry.  When they demanded a king the captivity sentence began to be carried out. David had did the census which violated god's will and he was slapped with a plague. God ole David turned God's wrath on the people for HIS sin. When the plague finally stopped David by justice should have been executed. Instead God preserved him and gave him an old JEBUSITE HIGH PLACE for a TENT but not for a HOUSE.

David in the interest of political consolidation (he was king--not a worship leader) moved the Ark. The first move failed.  During the second Move David sang, danced, stripped off his STOLA ( Smile ) and boasted about MAKING HIMSELF VILE to be honored by the camp following Girls. David truly believed that he had GOD IN THE BOX.  In the original ACTS, David for the first recorded event PERFORMED THE ROLE OF A WOMAN. This happened once in recourded history. It was performed by a king guilty of ALL other sins. It was to disconnect the Ark from the commanded Tabernacle because David instituted that imposed, fatal "worship of the starry host." That is why Jerusalem is called by John SODOM and the mother of harlots.

2 Sam 6:5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord
............ on all manner of instruments made of fir wood
............ even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels,
............ and on cornets, and on cymbals.

Playing instruments often involved sexual play as at Mount Sinai. We will look at that aspect later.

Quasten notes that the tambourine , like in Augustine,

"had already occupied an important position in the cult of the Egyptians, for its sound, which was deep and hollow, expelled the demons. The rhythmic musical character of the tambourine was highly suited to induce psychic stimulation."( p. 37)

If you can make that into something OUTLAWED for the godly people who attended SYNAGOGUE where "vocal or instrumental rejoicing was OUTLAED" then you are a pretty good PATTERNISTS. NOT being aware of the NOT commanded king, kingdom, temple or sacrificial system makes one very dangerous when adducing that SKIA or wholly erroneous system as something Disciples should do in Bible Class with the free water of the Word and Christ outlawing "speaking your own words."

Clyde Symonette: Among other labels pinned to David, scripture adds, “The man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel's singer of songs” (2 Samuel 23:1 NIV).
David knew that Christ promised him a family and not a HOUSE. David was not anointed as a singer but as KING given for a monarchy from which God prophesied destruction and He would not save them.

2Sam. 23:5 Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.

2Sam. 23:6 But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:

2Sam. 23:7 But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.

The Bible tells us that when David became an old man —
(1 Chronicles 23:1-5 NIV) ... He made his son Solomon king over Israel. He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. The Levites thirty years old or more were counted and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand are to supervise the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges. Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose.
This was the Civil-Military-Priestly class Christ calls robbers and parasites.  Notice, that DAVID says that DAVID provided the musical instruments.

Christ ins Spirit spoke ONLY through the godly PROPHETS for the GODLY people. If they were abandoned by God why do sowers of discoord want to us that as a PATTERNISM?

STEPHEN TOLD THE OLDEN CLERGY THE TRUTH AND THEY MURDERED HIM.

Acts 7:46 Who found GRACE before God,
and desired to find a TABERNACLE for the God of Jacob.
Acts 7:47 BUT Solomon built him an house.
Acts 7:48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the PROPHETS,
Acts 7:49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool:
what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
Acts 7:50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears,
ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
Acts 7:52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted?
         and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One;
of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
If you are using the worship of the Starry Host as a patternism for the Ekklesia / Synagogue or School of Christ where DISCIPLES meet to speak THAT WHICH IS WRITTEN with ONE MIND and ONE MOUTH then you are RESISTING the Holy Spirit whose name is Jesus Christ the Righteous.

Because of the DELUSION promise marked by performing riituals, it IS a "spirit" telling you guys to be abandoned to worship the stary host: The templle was old time Babylonianism: it is pictured as a Ziggurate.

Clyde Symonette: Following David's death, his son Solomon built Israel's Temple. Upon its completion, he set everything in place as David had commanded. So, beginning with the Temple’s dedication, its service included musical instruments (1 Chronicles 25:6; 2 Chronicles 5:11-14).

When Solomon built his NOT COMMANDED Temple which brought on civil war because of enslaving Israelites, the loud NOISE was the MARK for God to SHUT DOWN any access to Him, His Word and to His Grace at the Mercy Seat. God was carrying out his SLAVERY of the people to those Christ in the prophets calls PARASITES and ROBBERS.

After Solomon's death civil war broke out because Solomon had used the musical Levites to set the slave-labor building the temple enslaving Israelites and SELLING their cities to Hiram who DESIGNED the temple just like his at Trye.

It means to "surround with a stokade, and thus separate from the open country.  That was the signal that NO citizen quarantined to the synagogue had better be INSIDE CAMP.  Paul said that if we want to find Jesus we have to go OUTSIDE THE CAMP where the spiritual people attended synagogue, ekklesia or school of the Bible

Strong delusions produces lying wonders meaning all of the PERFORMING or hypocritic arts and crafts. NO MAN can assist God without being spiritually terminated.

FOR THE WORSHIP OF THE STARRY HOST

God abandoned Israel to "worship the starry host" according to Stephen and all known evidence.  That means that the Monarchy was a gentile-like nation and the temple and the sacrificial system was identical to that of Babylon or Tyre whose king Hiram built the temple in Jerusalem. The "levitical musican" ENSLAVED even jews and compelled them to do BONDGAGE.

When the WARS were over David had a surplus of Warrior Musicians so he organized a Works Project Administration to keep the mustered out Levites from revolting.  Even then they had to rotate and were FED only when on duty.

Clyde Symonette:1 Chron 25:1 MOREOVER David and the Commanders of the Army separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals: and the number of the workmen according to their service was:

Service is: H5656 ăbôdâh ‛ăbôdâh ab-o-daw', ab-o-daw' From H5647 ; work of any kind:—act, bondage, + bondservant, effect, labour, ministering (-try), office, service (-ile, -itude), tillage, use, work, X wrought.

H5647 ‛âbad aw-bad' A primitive root; to work (in any sense); by implication to serve, till, (causatively) enslave, etc.:— X be, keep in bondage, be bondmen, bond-service, compel

Worship is:
H10 ’ăbaddôh ab-ad-do' The same as H9 , miswritten for H11 ; a perishing:—destruction.

Because the kings carried out the captivity and death sentence imposed BECAUSE of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai, this is a MOTIF or PATTERNISM which is being repeated right now with the Mother of Harlots

H6 ’âbad aw-bad' A primitive root; properly to wander away, that is lose oneself; by implication to perish (causatively, destroy)

H11 ’ăbaddôn ab-ad-done' Intensively from H6 ; abstractly a perishing; concretely Hades:--destruction.

This is the Apollo John used as the PATTERNISM for the Mother of Harlots where Abaddon or Apollyon unleashed the locusts with deadly scorpion stingers who were the MUSES known to any literte Greek. That is why the singers and musicians are call SORCERERS who TAKE PEOPLE CAPTIVE.

1 Chron 25:2 Of the sons of Asaph; Zaccur, and Joseph, and Nethaniah, and Asarelah, the sons of Asaph under the hands of Asaph, which prophesied according to the order of the king.

H623 ’âsâph aw-sawf' From H622 ; collector; Asaph, the name of three Israelites, and of the family of the first:--Asaph.
H622 ’âsaph aw-saf' A primitive root; to gather for any purpose; hence to receive, take away, that is, remove (destroy, leave behind, put up, restore, etc.):--assemble, bring, consume, destroy, fetch, gather (in, together, up again), X generally, get (him), lose, put all together, receive, recover [another from leprosy], (be) rereward, X surely, take (away, into, up), X utterly, withdraw.

Maybe we should remember that David was the KING and the TEMPLE was the Capital of a Goyim or gentile nation. The animal sacrifices were NATIONAL and when the slaughter of INNOCENT LAMBS (as types of God) began, the loud NOISE was a signal that all CIVILIANS be outside of the WALLS--far removed from the later temple court.

Their RELIGION was Sabazianism and many of the names point directly to DIONYSUS worship which the Israelites brought from Egypt and NEVER CEASED to observe on a national basis.

Kings do not prescribe SPIRITUAL worship which took place OUTSIDE the gates where they held synagogue--even in the wilderness--to REST, read and rehearse the Word.  Loud trumpets could CALL ASSEMBLY but not the ALARM which included "making a joyful noise before the Lord" which was every nations' PANIC music.

Clyde Symonette: Unlike that of David, under Solomon’s reign, Israel reverted to idolatry, and with few exceptions, the kings and Jews of successive rulers were marked by idolatry; King Hezekiah of Judah was an exception. Under Hezekiah’s reign, Judah returned to worship of Jehovah God - with instruments. The Bible tells us that he —

There was no Temple during David's lifetime: when he sinned and deserved destruction God gave him an alternate old Jebusite High place to continue the "worship of the starry host." Jerusalem was already a high place for Sabazianism: it is called Sodom and the mother of harlots in Revelation. It was about 300 years after David's Plague Stopping animal sacrifice that Hezekiah wanted to purge Jerusalem and the Temple of the Assyrian and Molech worship of burning instruments.

2 Chronicles 29:25 NIV) ... Stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with harps and with lyres, according to the command of David and of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for the command was from the LORD through his prophets.

Soon thereafter, however, the Jews returned to idolatry.

God brought a PLAGUE on the King, Kingdom, Jerusalem, the Temple and the Priests. The temple had been profaned with burning infants to the beat of INSTRUMENTS.

The Goat or Azazel was an offering for the DEVIL after the Nadab and Abihu incident.  Therefore, notice that all of the atoning sacrifices are made with NO warrior's instruments.

2Chr. 29:20 Then Hezekiah the KING rose early,
and gathered the RULERS of the city, and went up to the house of the LORD.
2Chr. 29:21 And they brought seven bullocks, and seven rams, and seven lambs, and seven he goats,
        for a sin offering for
                the              kingdom,
                and for the  sanctuary,
                and for       Judah.
And he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the LORD.
2Chr. 29:22 So they killed the      bullocks,
and the priests received the blood,
and sprinkled it on the altar:
likewise, when they had killed the rams,
they sprinkled the blood upon the altar:
they killed also the                         lambs,
and they sprinkled the blood upon the altar.

SECONDLY IT WAS HEZEKIAH'S IDEA TO TRY TO MAKE PEACE WITH APOSTATE ISRAEL.

The Scape Goat began after Nadab and Abihu to APPEASE Azazel or Satan.

2Chr. 29:23 And they brought forth the HE GOATS
        for the sin offering before the king and the congregation;
and they laid their hands upon them:

2Chr. 29:24 And the priests killed them,
and they made RECONCILLIATION with their blood upon the altar,
to make an atonement for all ISRAEL:
for the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering
should be made for ALL ISRAEL

Amos 5-8 and Isaiah 5 defines Israel as having starved the people for lack of the word BECAUSE of wine, women and instrumental music. But, Hezekiah made a "unity" gesture and got laughed at.

THIRDLY, THE LEVITES WERE BROUGHT TO THE INNER COURT

The Levites were an old infant burning cult in Egypt and Jacob in Isaiah 49 warned us NOT to attend their assemblies much LESS impose their assemblies into a church and sow massive discord including breaking up families and David Faust was the agent at the time.

2Chr. 29:25 And he SET the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps,
        A. according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king’s seer,
        B
. and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.

Don't let a comma lead you into a fatal sin!

God never COMMANDED "set a king over us." So, watch for the split between the MILITARY and PRIESTLY.  They were SET and STOOD in ranks as WARRIORS:
Constituo I. to cause to stand, A. Military 1. To station or post troops somewhere, to draw up, set in order

This is ALL that God commanded but OUTLAWING it for the Church in the wilderness.

Num. 10:8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests,
        B. shall blow with the trumpets;
and they shall be to you for an ordinance
        for ever throughout your generations.

And this was outlawed for the Qahal, synagogue or Church in the wilderness.
The next verse makes it clear that the Levites were always under the king and commanders of the army but the trumpets were blown by the priests. This is a combination of the military and religious. The Temple was not commanded (Acts 7) whatever the Scribes write. The temple like all national temples was the king's shrine and capital.  However, not in the vilest pagan temple could instrument players enter into or come near any holy thing or holy place without being executed.

NOTE THAT ALL OF THE ATONING AND RECONCILLIATION OFFERINGS ARE COMPLETE.
Finally we are having the HOLOCAUST: TO TOTALLY CONSUME IT.

2Chr. 29:26
A. And the Levites stood with the instruments of David,

B. and the priests with the trumpets.
2Chr. 29:27 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering upon the altar.
And when the burnt offering began,

B. the song of the LORD began also with the trumpets,

A. and with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel.

God had not commanded a KING but imposed them. He even warned that the king would take the young men to make musical instruments to "run before the chariots" and of course be the first one's killed.  How could anyone say that God commanded that which he cast of as beyond redemption?

Peter etal commands the PROPHETS and the PROPHECIES MADE MORE PERFECT as that which will reveal the day star.  The prophets speak for Christ and the Church: the unauthorized King's Scribes speak for the Civil-Military-Priestly complex abandoned to idolatry.
Jer. 7:21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
Remember that the tribes west of the JordaN were ready to go to war because they thought those on the east side were going to offer burnt offerings so they could eat the flesh.
Jer. 7:22 For I spake not unto your fathers,
nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,
        concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

I don't know what to say about people who say that A spirit told them to do what Christ said was NOT commanded.
Jer. 7:23 But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:
and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

There is no room for human imagination hearing FROM SILENCE.
Jer. 7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward, and not forward.
Jer. 7:25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day
I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets,
daily rising up early and sending them:
Jer. 7:26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck:
they did worse than their fathers.
Jer. 7:27 Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them;
but they will not hearken to thee:
thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.

Clyde Symonette: In an effort to bring the Jews to repentance, the prophets Amos and Hosea announced Israel’s impending judgment. Amos proclaimed,
(Amos 8:10 ESV) I [God] will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.
Israel never ceased the worship of the starry host: They are beyond redemption and one fatal sin was bring David's warrior instruments into their holy places.  ALL of the instrumental instances are the MARK of those who had despised the Word of God and had slipped beyond redemption.

THUS hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit. Amos 8:1

And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord unto me,
        The END is come upon my people of Israel;

I will not again pass by them any more
. Amos 8:2

A basket:

Keluwb (h3619) kel-oob'; from the same as 3611; a bird-trap (as furnished with a clap-stick or treadle to spring it); hence a basket (as resembling a wicker cage): - basket, cage.

As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich. Je.5:27

Keleb (h3611) keh'leb; from an unused root mean. to yelp, or else to attack; a dog; hence (by euphemism) a male prostitute: - dog.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly [multitude, swarm] of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Ps.22:16

Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Is.56:11

And I will appoint over them four kinds, saith the Lord: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy. Je.15:3

Aeschylus, Suppliant Women

Therefore I would have you bring no shame upon me, now when your youthful loveliness attracts men's gaze. The tender ripeness of summer fruit is in no way easy to protect; beasts despoil it--and men, why not?-- [1000] and brutes that fly and those that walk the earth. Love's goddess spreads news abroad of fruit bursting ripe. . . . So all men, as they pass, [1005] mastered by desire, shoot an alluring arrow of the eye at the delicate beauty of virgins. See to it, therefore, that we do not suffer that in fear for which we have endured great toil and ploughed the great waters with our ship; and that we bring no shame to ourselves and exultation to our enemies. Housing of two kinds is at our disposition, [1010] the one Pelasgus offers, the other, the city, and to occupy free of cost. These terms are easy. Only pay heed to these behests of your father, and count your chastity more precious than your life.

Chorus

May the Olympian gods grant us good fortune in all the rest! [1015] But, concerning the bloom of my virginity, father, be of good cheer, for, unless some evil has been devised of Heaven, I will not swerve from the former pathway of my thoughts.

Aresko or Hedone is forbidden by Paul as self-pleasure in Romans 15. This is to silence the "diet" sects in Romans 14 which were all highly addicted to the sexual pleasure induced by music.

Pi.P.9.19 Pindar Pithian 9.[1] With the help of the deep-waisted Graces I want to shout aloud proclaiming the Pythian victory with the bronze shield of Telesicrates, a prosperous man, the crowning glory of chariot-driving Cyrene; [5] the long-haired son of Leto once snatched her from the wind-echoing glens of Mt. Pelion, and carried the girl of the wilds in his golden chariot to a place where he made her mistress of a land rich in flocks and most rich in fruits, to live and flourish on the root of the third continent. [9] Silver-footed Aphrodite welcomed [10] the Delian guest from his chariot, touching him with a light hand, and she cast lovely modesty on their sweet union, joining together in a common bond of marriage the god and the daughter of wide-ruling Hypseus. He was at that time king of the proud Lapiths, a hero of the second generation from Oceanus; [15] in the renowned glens of Mt. Pindus a Naiad bore him, Creusa the daughter of Gaia, delighting in the bed of the river-god Peneius. [17] And Hypseus raised his lovely-armed daughter Cyrene. She did not care for pacing back and forth at the loom, nor for the delights of luncheons with her stay-at-home companions; [20] instead, fighting with bronze javelins and with a sword, she killed wild beasts, providing great restful peace for her father's cattle; but as for her sweet bed-fellow, sleep, [25] she spent only a little of it on her eyelids as it fell on them towards dawn. [26] Once the god of the broad quiver, Apollo who works from afar, came upon her wrestling alone and without spears with a terrible lion.

Clyde Symonette: Their growing sinfulness became the subject of the stern warnings of Micah, Isaiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel – nonetheless, the prophets were ignored and God was about to judge Israel.

Clyde Symonette: Instead, they worshipped idols. In her judgment Israel was deported to Babylon, and in her captivity, Zion’s songs (i.e., praises) were silenced. The psalmist wrote,
(Psalm 137:1-4 NIV) By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
Because the Temple worship was in fact Babylonish, the singing and instruments were already imposed on them making natural singing impossible.  In fact, only the Levites could sing in a religious sense.
Psa. 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
Psa. 137:2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
Psa. 137:3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song;
and they that wasted us required of us mirth,
saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.

H5221 nâkâh naw-kaw' A primitive root; to strike (lightly or severely, literally or figuratively):— beat, cast forth, clap, give [wounds], X go forward, X indeed, kill, make [slaughter], murderer, punish, slaughter, slay (-er, -ing), smite (-r, -ing), strike, be stricken, (give) stripes, X surely, wound.
that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.  [three strings]

Turning our gaze again to the lower part of the picture we see, next after Patroclus, Orpheus sitting on what seems to be a sort of hill; he grasps with his left hand a harp, and with his right he touches a willow. It is the branches that he touches, and he is leaning against the tree. The grove seems to be that of Persephone, where grow, as Homer thought,2 black poplars and willows. The appearance of Orpheus is Greek, and neither his garb nor his head-gear is Thracian
The words of the psalmist depict an end to what was once exceedingly joyful praise (e.g., Psalm 66:2) and the resumption of Israel’s dirge. Generations of captive Jews lamented,

Psa. 66:12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads;
we went through fire and through water:
but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

Psa. 66:13 I will go into thy house with burnt offerings:
I will pay thee my vows,

Psa. 66:14 Which my lips have uttered,
and my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble.

Psa. 66:15 I will offer unto thee burnt sacrifices of fatlings,
        with the incense of rams;
I will offer bullocks with goats. Selah.

Jer. 7:21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.

Jer. 7:23 But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:
and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you,
that it may be well unto you.

Jer. 7:26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: t

Jer. 7:30 For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the LORD: t

Jer. 7:31 And they have built the high places of Tophet,

        to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire;
        which I commanded them not,
neither came it into my heart.
Jer. 7:32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that it shall no more be called Tophet,
nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter:
for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place.
Jer. 7:33 And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven,
and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away.
Jer. 7:34 Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah,

Clyde Symonette: (Lamentations 5:7-8, 14-15 NIV) Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. … The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.

Daniel is a good example of godly men who refused to "worship" at the sound of the noise of many animals. People could and did play instruments any time they wished: I am certain that they did not cease.  However, the songs connected to the animal sacrifice could not be used by those not of the tribe of Levi and then only when on rare duty. It was UNLAWFUL to make sacrificial music at any place other than Jerusalem and then ONLY for a short time until they self-destructed and went into captivity.

Far removed from a destroyed Solomon’s Temple, the Jews abstained from instruments and celebration. Even after many returned to Jerusalem under Ezra and Nehemiah to build the Second Temple, Jews considered themselves to still be in Exile. In fact, up to the time of Christ, the Jews thought of themselves as being in captivity. N. T. Wright explains,
Most first-century Jews believed that the Exile was not yet really over. Yes, they had come back from Babylon, geographically. But the pagans were still on top: first Persia, then Greece, then Syria, and now Rome. No sensitive or intelligent Jew would have dreamed of asserting that the promises of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the rest had been fulfilled in the various paltry “returns” that had taken place. Israel still needed “redeeming” — which, in their language, was an obvious code for the Exodus. The Exodus was the great covenant moment; what they now needed was covenant renewal.
There has been only one spiritual covenant made between Christ and Abraham.  The Law of Moses was added because of musical idolatry and the people turned over to worship the starry host and sentenced to captivity and death beyond Babylon.  The Monarchy was a rejection of God and He totally abandoned them. Reading Samuel who speaks for the spiritual people would inform any reader that the Monarchy was a "Covenant with Death."
Gal. 3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Gal. 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Gal. 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ;
that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Gal. 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men;
Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
Gal. 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made.
He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Gal. 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law,
which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul,
that it should make the promise of none effect.

Gal. 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal. 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Gal. 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:27 For (what I mean is that) as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal. 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free,
there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal. 3:29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Clyde Symonette: In their “Exile,” Rabbis came to permit canticles, that is, the chanting of scripture, but in the synagogues, they opposed any form of praise comparable to that found in the Temple.
John Chrysostom proves that God had commanded NOTHING in the Monarchy or national slaughter.

After the feast which they made to the demons, then it was that He permitted sacrifices: all but saying: `Ye are mad, and will needs sacrifice:

well then, at any rate sacrifice to Me. -(What follows may serve to illustrate the brief remark a little further on, Kai h aixmalwsia kathgoria thj kakiaj.)

"But even this, He did not permit to continue to the end, but by a most wise method, withdrew them from it ...

For He did not permit it to be done in any place of the whole world,
but in Jerusalem
only.

Anon, when for a short time they had sacrificed,
he destroyed the city.

Had He openly said, Desist, they, such was their insane passion for sacrificing, would not readily have complied. But now perforce, the place being taken away, He secretly withdrew them from their frenzy." So here: "Even the captivity impeaches the wickedness (which was the cause of the permission of sacrifice.")

Hezekiah's Animal Sacrific Exorcism was required because the previous king took the sacrifices OUTSIDE of the gates of Jerusalem where God quarantined the horror from any watching

Clyde Symonette: Why? Instruments were viewed as a symbol of Israel’s celebration of God’s favor.
Chrysostom continued:
"Music was understood to drive away hostile chthonic demons who loved tranquility and quiet. this concept of music's magical power is found in the formula of a love spell published by S. Eitrem:
"X.X. is bound with the tendons of the holy phoenix so that you will love N.N. with your whole heart and no barking dog or braying ass, cock or

conjurer, the clash of cymbals or the noise of flutes or anything else under the heavens will ever set you free."
"The harmful screaming of those who were to be killed in sacrifices was particularly attractived to the wicked demons
with whom the pagans believed the air (1 Corinthians 14:9) was filled.
Consequently, music was found to be especially appropriate at the time of sacrifice as a means of driving away the evil spirits who would destroy its efficacy. From this it can also be seen why music had to be uninterrupted during the actio. It was not necessary, then, that music drown out cries of pain but rather that it simply drive away the demons who had been attracted by those cries." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, pgs 16-17)
No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons (who distribute fortunes or gifts of spirits), not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 1 Corinthians10:20

So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 1 Corinthians 14:9

"In Greek ritual the sacrifice was accompanied by the invocatory cries of women.

Their purpose was to call the good gods so that they cound enjoy the sacrifice.<>
Music had the same character of epiclesis.
It was understood to "call down" the good gods.
Menander attests to the attribution of this significance to music. According to Plutarch,
the inhabiants of Argos blew trumpets on the feast of Dionysos
so as to call the god up from the depths of the river Lerne for the sacrifice.
Of course, the Greeks borrowed this from the Babylonians. For instance, In the Hymn in Praise of Enki's Temple Esira at Eridu:
When one bends the knee in his holy temple
may the harp, algar, drum, algarsurra,
har-har, sabitum, miritum,
instruments of sweet entreaty and humble imploring
which fill the temple,
accompany the entreaty in its splendor.
Enki's holy algar has [always] sung to him in splendor.
The musical instruments indeed
[always] accompanied [the temple's] entreaty!
Again, these words occur:
"In reverence commanded in the forecourt the seven musical instruments are played and the ceremonies of exorcism are undertaken. (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 17-18)

David lists seven instruments in Psalm 150
Trumpet, Psaltery, harp, timbrel, stringed instruments, organs, cymbals
Clyde Symonette:  The Pharisees, particularly, were mindful of the words of the prophet Amos:
(Amos 6:1,4-7 NIV) Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria. … You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves. You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.
Amos is not condemning David or the harp; he is making the point that, as instruments were associated with David’s celebration, Israel’s instruments, wine, and luxurious living, at a time when they should have been grieving over their sins, were acts demonstrating their defiance against God’s judgment. Therefore, the rabbis reasoned, instruments should not be used while the Jews were still in exile.

David was king abandoned to lead a nation God had abandoned to worship the starry host. Whatever you think of David God gave them kings in His anger because they rejected Him and demanded a king LIKE the nations. God knew that they wanted to  worship like the nation but they were IN TRANSIT to captivity and death.

Any Levite singer or musician who came NEAR any holy thing or place was to be executed. However, in Israel defined by Amos and Isaiah, they took their singing, instruments, drinking wine and sex into the temple.

Amos 8:3 And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; Amos 6:3

That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; Amos 6:4

That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David; Amos 6:5

That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Amos 6:6

Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed. Amos 6:7

"NO command of God was ever so ascribed to man. The use of the instruments of music in the Old Testament were of man, not of God." (Tract on music, Lipscomb).

"Surely these inspired statements are sufficient to show that David made, invented, and commanded the use of instruments of music in divine worship. Where does revelation explain that God made, invented, appointed, or commanded the use of instrumental music in ordained worship of that age? On the basis of plain declarations, the contention that David introduced the idea is founded; in the absence of such testimony that God is the author, we reject the opinion that God authorized the practice." (L.O. Sanderson, p. 350).

"From the beginning, then, it was not so. Neither is it a part of or aid to Christian worship. Since there is no record of God ordaining the practice, he must have simply tolerated or indulged it, just as he did regarding some ignorance, kings, divorces, and polygamy" (Sanderson, p. 351).

"It was by the hand or commandment of the Lord and his prophets that the Levites should praise the Lord; for so the Hebrew text may be understood:

"and it was by the order of David that so many instruments of music should be introduced into the Divine service." (Adam Clark, Commentary on 2 Chron. 29:25).

Then Clark says:

"But were it evident, which it is not, either from this (2 Chron. 29:25) or any other place in the sacred writings, that instruments of music were prescribed by Divine authority under the law, could this be adduced with any semblance of reason that they ought to be used in Christian Worship? No..." (Adam Clark, Commentary, Vol. II, PP. 690-691).

"I believe that David was not authorized by the Lord to introduce that multitude of musical instruments into the divine worship of which we read; and I am satisfied that his conduct in this respect is most solemnly reprehended by this prophet; and I further believe that the use of such instruments of music in the Christian church is without the sanction and against the will of God; that they are subversive of the spirit of true devotion...if there was a woe to them who invented instruments of music, as did David under the law, is there no woe...to those who introduce them?" (Adam Clark, Commenting on Amos 6:5).

"It is foreign also to the piety of Clement that the (song) instituted for drinking companies, to be sung in the convivial feasts of the Gentiles... As if he [Clement] did not know that Psalms, not 'wine songs,'... were recited at the close of the Supper... I say that so great a profanation of the Psalms is most severely condemned by God in the third [commandment] of the Decalogue and Amos 5:23; 6:5" (Joseph Bingham, Antiq. of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 485 quoting Clement).

"...Scriptures do condemn the use that David made of the instruments in worship--Amos 6:5: 'Woe to them... that chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David;' and Amos 5:23: 'Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.' The condemnation of the instruments of music in this passage turns on the phrase like David--it does not say like David's, which could refer only to the instruments, but like David is the use that David made of the instruments. David did not invent the musical instrument--Jubal invented the instruments (Gen. 4:21)--but David invented them for worship--they were David's innovation." (Wallace, p. 177).

"Amos, we are told, is the sharpest critic of musical instruments in pre-Christian times. through him God expresses a preference for justice and honesty over bloody sacrifice and its attendant music of song and instruments. This sentiment, we are told, was revolutionary, making part of a similar change felt over the civilized world... And overall view of the evidence, McKinnon thinks, reveals a relationship between the three elements: a higher conception of God, a rejection of sacrifice, and a rejection of musical instruments." (Green, William M, Pepperdine College, in Restoration Quarterly, v. 19, 1966).

"To hear a man's or woman's voice sing Handel's solo... beats through one's chest with some sort of a throb depending on how well he or she is singing, and how much you respond to this kind of music. But no matter how much you may 'enjoy' Handel's solo, the words are not meant to be entertainment." (Schaeffer, Edith, Christianity is Jewish, p. 1)

"Amos stressed "that violations of the moral law could not be remedied by means of festive rites, offerings, or liturgical indulgence on the part of the sinner. In point of fact, God was already standing beside the altar (Am. 9:1ff), poised and ready to shatter it. No ritual, however, elaborate and symbolic in nature, could possibly substitute for the sincere worship of the human spirit, grounded in high moral and ethical principles." (Harrison, p. 895).

"Not surprisingly, most Israelites declined the prophet's invitation to enter into a dialog with Yahweh. They preferred a less demanding religion of cultic observance either in the Jerusalem Temple or in the old fertility cults of Canaan. This continues to be the case: the religion of compassion is followed only by a minority; most religious people are content with decorous worship in synagogue, church, temple and mosque. The ancient Canaanite religions were still flourishing in Israel... the Israelites were still taking part in fertility rites and sacred sex there, as we see in the oracles of the prophet Hosea, Amos' contemporary." (Armstrong, Karen, A History of God, p. 47).

F. B. Bruce is one of the best known modern writer and one might expect that he would defend the denominational practice. However, he like most who rest on their scholarship tell the truth. He wrote--

"...these same people were punctilious in their religious observances. Never did such abundant sacrifices smoke to Yahweh from the altars at Dan and Bethel and other sanctuaries in Israel; and the note of praise rose regularly and loudly from tongue and harp. Was not this the worship in which Yahweh delighted? So they thought, but the voice of Yahweh through His prophet told a different story." (F.F. Bruce, Israel, p. 58).

Bruce shows, along with the LXX, that (1) music was used as worship, (2) they thought that God would delight in it, but (3) God condemned it. This refutes those who deny that Amos said anything about music and it supports the clear statement and context of the book of Amos.

Most ancient scholars not only condemn music as worship but show that it had its origin in pagan superstition and was the product of the poets (songs as magical incantations)--

"It was only permitted to the Jews as sacrifice was, for the heaviness and grossness of their souls. God condescended to their weakness, because they were lately drawn off from idols; but now, instead of organs, we may use our own bodies to praise him withal." (Chrysostom on Psa. 149, Vol. iii, p. 634).

"I say that so great a profanation of the Psalms is most severely condemned by God in the third [commandment] of the Decalogue and Amos 5:23; 6:5, 5" (Joseph Bingham, Antiq. of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 485 quoting Clement)

Amos lumps singing to the sound of the viol and inventing more instruments of music to all of those willful sins. That included a man and his son going into the same temple prostitute. Which ones would you exclude.

Arnobius

O dreadful forms of terror and frightful bugbears on account of which the human race was to be benumbed for ever, to attempt nothing in its utter amazement, and to restrain itself from every wicked and shameful act--little sickles, keys, caps, pieces of wood, winged sandals, staves,
little timbrels, pipes, psalteries, breasts protruding and of great size, little drinking cups, pincers, and horns filled with fruit... Would it not have been  better to dance and to sing, than calling it gravity and pretending to be serious, to relate what is so insipid and so silly, that images were formed by the ancients to check wrongdoing, and
to arouse the fears of the wicked and impious?" (Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene Fathers, VI, p. 517).
And can any man persuade himself that the gods become mild as
they are exhilarated by pleasures, (Click For A Second Incarnation)
that they long for sensual enjoyment,
and, like some base creatures,
are affected by agreeable sensations,
and
charmed and tickled for the moment by a pleasantness which soon passes away...
The NIV The LXX add the reason for music&emdash;
You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. who excel in the sound of musical instruments; -- Amos 6:5 NIV
they have regarded them as
abiding, not as fleeting pleasure." Amos 6:5 LXX
Moreover, every pleasure is, as it were, a kind of flattery of the body, and is addressed to the five well-known senses;
but if the gods above feel it, they must partake of those bodies through which there is a way to the senses, and a door by which to receive pleasures.
We have to examine the argument which we hear continually coming from the lips of the common people, and find embedded in popular conviction,
that sacrifices are offered to the gods of heaven for this purpose,
that they may lay aside their anger and passion, and they be restored to a calm and placid tranquility, the indignation of their fiery spirits being assuaged." (Arnobius Against the Heathen, Ante-Nicene, VI, p. 519).

"In pagan traditions, musical instruments are invented by gods or demi-gods, such as titans. In the Bible, credit is assigned to antediluvian patriarchs, for example, the descendants of Cain in Genesis 4:21. There is no other biblical tradition about the invention of musical instruments." (Freedman, David Noel, Bible Review, Summer 1985, p. 51). (Proof Here).

The Marzeah in Amos 5

Conrad L'Heureux demonstrated that the marzeah, or symposium (feast, gathering, banquet, assembly) of El that is found in the Rephaim Texts of Ugarit "must be a reflex in the divine world of the symposium celebrated by the members of the earthly marzeah of El...each guild apparently had a divine patron."42 The heavenly marzeah had participants called rp'm, which we also find in the earthly marzeah, e.g., "May Krt be greatly exalted among the rp'm of the earth...the rp'm constitute an aristocracy of which the Canaanite kings were a part."43 Moses, and the prophets following him were proclaimed as "Speakers for Yahweh," showing the people that "they are sent from the divine king, the suzerain of treaties, to reprove and to pronounce judgment upon Israel..."44

Note 42: Conrad L'Heureux, "The Ugaritic and Biblical Rephaim," Harvard Theological Review, 67(1974): 270-271.

Note 43. Conrad L'Heureux, Rephaim, 271. Cf. 272, footnote 25, the authority of El is ordinarily exercised through the younger generation of gods whom we could call the executive deities. It is also possible to understand the term rp'm as "the assembly of the gods." The entire premise of Jacobsen's article "Primitive Democracy," is that the groups and assemblies on earth reflected what the gods had done in heaven.

"The marzeah had an extremely long history extending at least from the 14th century B.C. through the Roman period. In the 14th century B.C., it was prominently associated with the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra), on the coast of Syria...

The marzeah was a pagan ritual that took the form of a social and religious association... Some scholars regard the funerary marzeah as a feast for--and with--deceased ancestors (or Rephaim, a proper name in the Bible for the inhabitants of Sheol)." (King, Biblical Archaeological Review, Aug, 1988, p. 35, 35)

"These five elements are:
........(1) reclining or relaxing,
........(2) eating a meat meal,
........(3) singing with harp or other musical accompaniment,
........(4) drinking wine and
........(5) anointing oneself with oil." (King, p. 37).

THIS WAS RISING UP TO PLAY AND THE PLAY OF DAVID WHERE EVERYONE GOT A SHARE OF FOOD.

"we recognize the same elements: the sacrifices and libation, the cultic feast in which the congregation gets a share of food and drink after it has been blessed by the king, and the merry-making, now in the form of instrumental and vocal music. But the central act of the ritual, which was performed by the king, is called literally 'drinking' the god (Gurney, O. R. Some Aspects of Hittite Religion, p. 33-34, Oxford University Press, 1977)

This won't shock the literate who know that because of the MUSICAL IDOLATRY at Mount Sinai God TURNED THEM OVER to worship the starry host.

"The normal order of events was a meal, followed by a drinking party. Entertainment might include anything from a rhetorcian or philosopher discoursing on some topic, to musical entertainment, to sexual dalliance."

"Plutarch implicitly contrasts a serious dinner featuring a sage as the after-dinner speaker with the other sorts of dinners--where sexual play with the girl flute-players or hetairae was common." (Witherington, Ben, Why Not Idol Meat, Bible Review, June 1994, p. 41-42).

Clyde Symonette: The Jewish Encyclopedia states,
The desire of many authorities [is] that song should be abstained from in lasting mourning for fallen Zion.
ALL of the predictions of mourning are based on the fact that the Jews thought that they could honor God best by stealing food from the poor (collection plates) claiming that it was for God.  However, they held a modern "church" assembly very often and rather than taking a tithe of food (only) as rent from the farmers began to take up tithes daily.  They went into captivity and mourned because the clergy starved them to death for lack of the Word of God.  Isaiah 5 repeats the reason
(Cyrus Adler, “Music, Synagogal,” The Jewish Encyclopedia Vol. IX (New York: Funk and Wagnalls Co. 1905), p. 120).
Hence, the synagogue, until well after New Testament times, was a house of prayer, of scripture study and teaching, and the public reading of the scriptures, which were often chanted to those present. But so far as history records, there was no congregational singing, no instruments, and no liturgy (Jason J. McFarland, “Early Christian Singing,” Pastoral Music fn. 12 (Sept. 1, 2010)).
Chanted means cantillation which is Paul's command SPEAK. The psalms were recited (exactly) using a set of notations for emphasis but never for musical meter.

The Synagogue for the godly people began in the wilderness and never changed: because it was exclusively to read and discuss the Word of God no one could invent a rationale for singing.  The prayer was a set prayer usually the Shema which denies that there are "three god persons." The Read-er was usually the Prayer.

This was affirmed by Jesus in His personal practices, continued as "synagogue" after His resurrection on the First day of the week, commanded and exampled by Paul, Peter and recorded history for centuries.

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time
hath in every city them that preach him,
being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
2Cor. 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
2Cor. 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
2Cor. 3:13 And not as Moses,
which put a vail over his face,
that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
2Cor. 3:14 But their minds were blinded:

for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament;
which vail is done away in Christ.
2Cor. 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2Cor. 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
2Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2Cor. 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
How tragic to think that reading or SPEAKING the Words of Christ one to another makes our heart strings sing as we worship IN THE PLACE of the human spirit is so SAD.
Clyde Symonette: Was a continuation of Israel’s lament God’s intent for N.T. Israel; or for the church?

Covenant Renewal

THE COVENANT WITH DEATH WAS NOT RENEWED: THE COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM WAS ENABLED BY THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SACRIFICIAL SYSTEM.

With an understanding that every Old Testament reference to chanting is a reference to lament (for example, Ezekiel 32:16), let’s examine the passages that specifically address God’s intent for New Covenant praise.

According to Jeremiah (c. 31) and Isaiah (c.61), the LORD promised to replace Israel’s laments with David’s joyful praise, praise that includes instruments, under a “New Covenant.” Let’s examine the words of the prophets.

Jeremiah 33:14–18 reads:
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line … This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.”

For this is what the LORD says: “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel.”

Heb. 4:5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
Heb. 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest,
then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
Heb. 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Heb. 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest,
he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
JESUS DIED TO REMOVE THE LADED BURDEN AND GIVE US REST FROM THE JEWS.

The burden Jesus removed was:

Matt. 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

5412. phortizo, for-tid´-zo; from 5414; to load up (properly, as a vessel or animal), i.e. (figuratively) to overburden with ceremony (or spiritual anxiety): -- lade, by heavy laden.

Strabo in Geography wrote of performance worship ritual which Jesus and Paul outlawed:

for all agree in regarding the women as the chief founders of religion, and it is the women who provoke the men to the more attentive worship of the gods, to festivals, and to supplications, and it is a rare thing for a man who lives by himself to be found addicted to these things.

Aristotle on Politics 1339b

"And we may consider the conception that we have about the gods:
        Zeus does not
sing and harp to the poets himself.
        But
professional musicians we speak of as vulgar people, and indeed
        we think it
not manly to perform music, except when drunk or for fun.

Phortizo (g5412) for-tid'-zo; from 5414; to load up (prop. as a vessel or animal), i.e. (fig.) to overburden with ceremony (or spiritual anxiety):- lade, be heavy laden.

Clyde Symonette: Previously Jeremiah wrote:
(Jeremiah 30:8–9 NIV)“In that day,” declares the LORD Almighty, “I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them. Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.”

Jer. 30:10 Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel:
for, lo, I will save thee from afar,
        and thy seed from the land of their captivity;
and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest,
and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid.

H8252 shâqaṭ shaw-kat' A primitive root; to repose (usually figuratively):—appease, idleness, (at, be at, be in, give) quiet (-ness), (be at, be in, give, have, take) rest, settle, be still.

Jer 30:18 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof.

Jer 30:19 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry:
        and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

H8426 tôdâh to-daw' From H3034 ; properly an extension of the hand, that is, (by implication) avowal, or (usually) adoration; specifically a choir of worshippers:—confession, (sacrifice of) praise, thanks (-giving, offering).

Jer 30:20 Their children also shall be as aforetime,
and their congregation shall be established before me,
and I will punish all that oppress them.

Clyde Symonette: Peter declared in Acts 2:22-26 that this “David” is Israel’s redeemer, Jesus the Christ. Jesus is the “righteous Branch sprout” and the one who sits “on the throne of the house of Israel.” Through Jesus, God fulfilled his promises to the Jews.

God promised David a TENT rather than let him be killed.
David thought that God meant a HOUSE
But, Solomon built God a house but God does not dwell in houses built by human hands.
Therefore, the restored tabernacle of David was a witness and not a "worship center."

Now, pay careful attention to what Jeremiah says about the praise of redeemed Israel under “King David”, in contrast to the worship of enslaved Israel:

David never "praised" God in a temple because it did not exist. If it did exist he could not enter in where the Levites made the lambs dumb before the slaughter.

There is not a single example of people assemblying to "singing" and listen to instrumental music. I the case of Deborah, singing was "at the places of watering" or Oasis and not in a house. Singing was common during the wine harvest when people gathered to go naked and stamp out the juice which the musicians played.

There was never a "rejoicing worship service" especially with professional musicians. When the sacrificial system ended the fir trees rejoiced because they were no longer slaughtered ot make harps and bows and lances:
Is. 14:8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
(Jeremiah 30:19 NIV) From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. (Compare Luke 15:24,25.)

(Jeremiah 31:4,13 NIV) “I [God] will build you up again and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out to dance with the joyful.”

“Then maidens will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.”

Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel:
        thou shalt again be
adorned with thy tabrets,
and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry. Jer. 31:4

Go forth means:

Yaca (h3318) yaw-tsaw'.. break out, bring forth (out, up), carry out, come (abroad, out, thereat, without), / be condemned, depart(-ing, -ure), draw forth, in the end, escape, exact, fail, fall (out), fetch forth (out), get away (forth, hence, out)...

The timbrel "was a typical women's instrument. It is mentioned seven times in the OT; thus it must have been very popular. Although it occurs in the Psalter and in religious hymns (Exod 15; Jer. 31:4), it was not permitted in the temple. Its function in the Bible was restricted to secular or religious frolicking, cultic dances, or processions (e. g., II Sam. 6:5; 1I Chr. 13:4; Ps. 68:25). Its absence in the temple ritual was possible due to the strong female symbolism, which always accompanied the tambourine, and which made its use so popular at all fertility rites." (Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible, p. 474, Abingdon).

Don't try that in the SYNAGOGUE: you would get hurt.

Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things. Jer. 31:5

For there shall be a day,
that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry,
Arise ye, and let us go up
to Zion unto the Lord our God. Jer. 31:6

Jeremiah speaks to God’s intent the way early church fathers cannot. He promised that there was a day coming when —

Further, Jeremiah tells the Jews when his prophesy would be fulfilled. He writes,

(Jeremiah 31:31-32 NIV) “The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.

Readers should recognize these as the same words the Hebrew writer used to announce the New Covenant to Israel (Hebrews 8:7-12).

Like Jeremiah, Isaiah foretold the restoration of Israel’s praise. He wrote,

(Isaiah 61:1-3 NIV) The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.

Is. 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion,
to give unto them beauty for ashes,
the oil of joy for mourning,
        the garment of praise (joyfulness)
        for the spirit of heaviness;
that they might be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
Is. 61:4 And they shall build the old wastes,
they shall raise up the former desolations,
and they shall repair the waste cities,
        the desolations of many generations
Is. 58:12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places:
thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called,
The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
Is. 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath (rest),
from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight,
the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him,
        not doing thine own ways,
        nor finding thine own pleasure,
        nor speaking thine own words:

that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed.
Isa 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God;
for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments,
and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Who were the “brokenhearted,” the “captives,” and those who “grieved” in Zion? Were they not the ones chanting laments?

When was Isaiah’s prophecy fulfilled? Luke tells of the day that Jesus went into the synagogue, read Isaiah 61, and said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21 NIV).

The New Covenant is “the year of the LORD’s favor,” a comfort for “all who mourn,” and a provision “for those who grieve in Zion.” It bestows on its former mourners “a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” What this means is the kingdom is not a continuation of Israel’s lament, in fact, lament was never God’s intent for Israel.

Clyde Symonette:  Synagogue Worship After 70 AD

Prevented from worshiping at the Second Temple (Herod’s) after it was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD, eventually the Jews replaced the joyous, celebrative, instrumental worship of the Temple with mournful worship in the synagogue. It was at this time that congregational “singing” became a part of the synagogue, but without instruments.

The congregation for the temple was the king, commanders of the army, Levite warrior musicians, the priests and citty officials. No godly Jew ever attended congregational singing with musical accompanient at any time or place in the whole Bible.

The Absolute Command, Example, Inference and historic practise was to use the BIBLICAL text given "for our LEARNING." Therefore, no early synagogue sang in the modern mind-fracturing sense.

Defined conventionally, however, as a group singing a uniform prayer-text in unison, congregational singing is rarely heard in the typical Hasidic minyan—whether in a small shtibl or in a large synagogue. While the musical culture of Hasidism has shaped congregational singing in synagogues all over the globe, Hasidim themselves rarely sing the equivalent of a "Vetaheir Libeinu" or a "Yismechu" in the course of a Sabbath service..

Congregational singing, in such a context, could even become counter-productive, impeding the natural flow of davening.

The Synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness had no singing or instrumental music: it was ordained as a Holy Convocation for the First and Seventh days of the festivals. The festivals were more like military musters: all of the warrior age males appeared three time during the year.  When settled, the synagogue was held each REST day which was the seventh day based on the stars and moons. This quarantined the godly people from the curse of the sacrificial system abandoned to Babylonianism because that is what they requested by the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai for which God.
Acts 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the STAR of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
The JEWS other than of the tribe of Levi did not "worship" at the temple in any sense: the sounds of trumpets made sure they were OUTSIDE of the city walls.

No Levite entered into any holy place or near any thing holy on the penalty of death.

Those not of the on duty tribe of Levi attended synagogue: there apparently was one near the temple and up to a 100 have been excavated.

When you blow 120 shofars and twang on David's harps you are NOT making music: it was clearly commanded to be of ONE SOUND: a loud crashing noise never called music.

The Jewish synagogue went in its own direct but the Christians attended "school of the Word" and there was no praise service because outlawed by Christ in the wilderness. Minimal reverence would not make instrumental noises to create the laded burden when we come to learn of Jesuss Christ.

Music in the Synagogue: Britannica Members

"The description of the synagogue service above noted the role of the hazzan, or cantor. It is he who reads the service and

declaims the scriptural lessons to certain set musical modes that vary with the season and occasion.

Many of these call for melodic responses on the part of the congregation. The origins and varying developments of these chants are ancient, often obscure, and equally complicated. Whatever the basic materials, these were enlarged, varied, corrupted, and reworked over the centuries in the various environments in which the Jewish communities have lived. In modern times musicologists have begun to examine with great care the history of synagogal music, analyzing its basic structures and its relationship to the music of Christian liturgical traditions.

In the 19th century in Western Europe much of the traditional music was either discarded or re-worked under the influence of western forms and styles.

In addition the pipe-organ was introduced and was the centre of stormy controversy.

A.D 1810-1815

"The strict order of the Church Fathers that only one instrument should be employed, i.e., the human voice, has been observed in the Syriac, the Jacobite, the Nestorian, and the Greek churches to the present day. So also the synagogue did not use any instrument in the services up to 1810, in which year the organ was introduced in Seesen, Germany" (Idelsohn, quoted by Bales , p. 259).

"The modern organ in Reform Synagogues as an accessory of worship was first introduced by Israel Jacobson at Berlin in the new house of prayer which he opened for the Shabu'ot festival, June 14, 1815...(because this one was closed because errother Jews brought suit) The members of the Reform party succeeded in building and dedicating their first temple on October 18, 1818, at Hamburg, where they set up a fine organ, but employed a non-Jewish organist" (Isadore Singer, Jewish Encyclopedia)

"It is still banned by rigid adherents to old ways; but in ordinary conservative congregations it is unhesitatingly employed at weddings and other services on week days" (Ibid., p. 134)

An attempt was made by "Reform" Judiasm to export its heresies to Russia. Dr. Max Lillienthal (1814-1882) set up the groundwork for government-sponsored Jewish secular schools in December 1841. However, his best-laid plans were put to an end by the great Lubavitcher Chasidic rabbi--thr Tzemach Tzedek. Generations afterwards his discendent was was thrown down a flight of stairs after the Russian Revolution. Reform Judaism began in Germany just after the Napoleonic emanicipation.

The synagogue services were shortened, the vernacular and music were used and group replaced individual confirmation.

Clyde Symonette:  Eliyahu Schleifer tells us,
The simplicity of the music in the early synagogue was influenced by the halakhic [rabbinic] prohibitions against playing musical instruments, or, under certain circumstances, even singing. These prohibitions stem from three different sources: rules of Sabbath observance; the mourning over the destruction of the Temple; and the struggle against what the Rabbis took to be promiscuity.

Musical instruments and the shofar were considered inseparable parts of the Sabbath service in the Temple; rabbinic law could do nothing regarding their presence there. But the Rabbis could and did prohibit them outside the Temple for fear that playing an instrument on the Sabbath, a permissible act in and of itself, might lead inadvertently to the musician's tuning it, mending it, or carrying it from one public place to another — all of these being forbidden acts of work. Since the main synagogue service took place on Sabbath mornings, no musical instrument could become an integral component thereof. Even the shofar could not be blown, if Rosh Hashanah occurred on the Sabbath.
(Eliyahu Schleifer, Sacred Sound and Social Change: Liturgical Music in Jewish and Christian Experience (University of Notre Dame Press), republished at Jewish Liturgics, Chant Development,Jewish Liturgical Music, Part II”).
Thus, after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD, the Jewish synagogues took up congregational singing, but they banned the instrument as a sign of mourning for the destroyed Temple, to avoid the risk of doing prohibited work on a Sabbath, and to avoid any association with the promiscuous use of instruments by the surrounding pagan culture.

Clyde Symonette:

New Testament Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy

There’s a remarkable contrast between the lament of the Jews and Christian worship. The Christian church saw worship very differently from the First Century Jewish synagogue. The church at Jerusalem worshipped at the instrumental Temple (Luke 24:53). The church at Antioch worshiped together, in Antioch, apart from the Temple (Acts 13:1).

The Christian assembly became a place for “a hymn [Gk. psalmos (ψαλμός)], a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation” (1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV), which was radically different from both the Temple and synagogue.

Paul instructed,
(Ephesians 5:18-21 ESV) 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Without always using the "singing" word which the word SPEAK outlaws anyway, Paul excludes all of the pagan backgrounds before he defines the role of what he often defines as "synagogue."  Therefore, by looking at the parallels we will not fall into instrumental heresy:

All religious musicians were identified as males performing the roles of females. In the beginning Moses wrote;

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Gen 4:21

Jubal was the "father" or instructors of all of those who handle musical instruments. To handle is

Taphas (h8610) taw-fas'; to manipulate, i. e. seize; chiefly to capture, wield; spec. to overlay; fig. to use unwarrantably: - catch, handle, (lay, take) hold (on, over), stop, surely, surprise, take. overlay.

And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. Ge.39:12

Taphah (h8608) taw-faf'; to drum, i. e. Play on the tambourine: - taber, play with timbrels.

Taphar (h8609) taw-far'; women that sew together to perform magic.

Likewise, thou son of man, set thy face against the daughters of thy people, which prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy thou against them, Eze 13:17

Dogs were the CYNICS they stamped, clapped and made noises like DOGS to attract their fellow homosexuals. It assuredly works in churches of Christ which have been INFILTRATED and DIVERTED into "theaters for holy entertainment" where theatron means to MAKE A SPECTACLE. True to all of history, about HALF run for their lives.

Clyde Symonette: The language parallels Psalm 108 —
(Psalm 108:1-4 ESV) My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! 2 Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn! 3 I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. 4 For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
First, you will notice that this is an INDIVIDUAL statement of a king over a nation abandoned to worship the starry host. If that is what God abandoned them to, what do you THINK they were worshiping?
Psa. 108:1 O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise, even with my glory.
Psa. 108:2 Awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
Since David was king of a nation totally abandoned to STAR WORSHIP and sentenced to be returned to "beyond Babylon" it is logical that many of the psalms express a pagan or blood-thirsty viewpoint.
Psa. 108:12 Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
Psa. 108:13 Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

The trumpet blown for decampment, at the gathering of the people and on different cultic occasions, especially during sacrifices (2 Chron. 30:21; 35:15; Num 10:2), was the signaling instrument of the Egyptian army.

The sistrum, according to 2 Sam 6:5, was used by the Israelites and bore the name mena'anim. It was the same as the Egyptian kemkem which was employed in the cult of Isis.

Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please them selves in the children of strangers (adulterous women). Isaiah 2:6

Soothsayers: Anan (h6049) aw-nan'; a prim. root; to cover; used only as denom. from 6051, to cloud over; fig. to act covertly, i. e. practise magic: - * bring, enchanter, Meonemin, observer of times, soothsayer, sorcerer.

This points to RESPONSIVE SINGING and the worship of ANATH.

Nachash (h5172) naw-khash'; a prim. root; prop. to hiss, i. e. whisper a (magic) spell; gen. to prognosticate: - * certainly, divine, enchanter, (use) * enchantment, learn by experience, * indeed, diligently observe.

Nachash (h5175) naw-khawsh'; from 5172; a snake (from its hiss): - serpent.

DAVID'S AROUSERS: don't get upset: God turned Israel over to worship the starry host.

"In an inscription from Cyprus, in one from Rhodes and in several from around the district of Carthage, there are references to important personages who bear the title Mqm'lm which we can translate as AROUSERS of the god.'" (de Vaux, Roland, The Bible and the Ancient Near East, Doubleday, p. 247).

"We even have a mention at a later date of a similar custom in connection with the cult in Jerusalem, where certain Levites, called me'oreim, 'AROUSERS,' sang (every morning?) this verse from "Ps 44:23: "Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever." The Talmud tells us that John Hyrcanus suppressed the practice because it recalled too readily a pagan custom." (Roland de Vaux, p. 247).

Clyde Symonette: The parallelism shows that the time of the Exile is over and now it’s time to “sing and make melody” as God’s people did before! The Kingdom has been restored! The Temple Psalms could be sung once again! The Songs of Zion are restored! After all, many of the Psalms written for the Temple worship were written about Jesus!

Finally, in Romans 15:11, Paul quotes Psalm 117:1
(Romans 15:11 ESV) And again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples extol him."
Rom. 15:1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak,
        and not to please ourselves.
Rom. 15:2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.

Edification means only education here.

Rom. 15:3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but,
as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.

Making Him Naked:

Rom. 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,

that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Rom. 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation
grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Rom. 15:6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God,
even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rom. 15:7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.
“Praise” (aineo or αἰνέω) is used very frequently in the Septuagint, in such verses as —
(Psalm 149:3 ESV) 3 Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!
David had been turned over to worship the STARRY HOST.  He is singing and thinking IN HIS BED. Based on the definition of words David lusts to get HIS god in HIS bed.  Dionysus was the old wine skin god and was worshipped musicially and sexually in the temple: this is the Abomination of Desolation by which the clergy tried to pipe and force Jesus into the lamenting and dancing "initiation" into the gay brotherhood. ALL priesthoods were the same.

Psalm 149 and the Dionysus worship imposed in Jerusalem because of musical idolatry.
(Psalm 150:3-6 ESV) 3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
David was king and the Levites were agents of the not-commanded king and the commanders of the army. #150 is not a PSALM and you cannot use it. Since David worshipped the starry host one expects to grasp that the HALAL word is the source of the Lucifer word.

Cymbal: "It was probably usual to welcome a king or general with music and dancing...The distinctly religious dance is more frequently mentioned. The clear instances of it in the Bible are the dance of the women of Israel at the Red Sea, headed by Miriam with her tambourine (Ex 15:20); the dance of the Israelites round the golden calf (32:19); the dance of the maidens of Shiloah at the annual feast (Jgs 21:19 ff); the leaping or limping of the prophets of Baal round their altar on Carmel (1 K 18:26); and the dancing of David in front of the ark (2 S 6:14-16) (Int. Std. Bible Ency., p. 1169-70).

"This membranophone, translated in the AV as 'timbrel' and 'tabret,' was not permitted in the Temple, although it was mentioned in the Psalter and in religious hymns" (Ps 150:4; Jer. 31:4) Harrison, Into to OT, p. 988).

"It was used in very early times by the Syrians of Padan-aram at their merry-making (Gen. 31:27). It was played principally by women (Ex. 15:20); Judg. 11:34; 1 Sam. 18:6; Psa lxvii:25 as an accompaniment to the song and dance, and appears to have been worn by them as an ornament (Jer. 31:4)... It is beat with the fingers, and is the Trye tympanum of the ancients, as appears from its figure in several relieves, representing the orgies of Bacchus and rites of Cybele." (Smiths Bible Dictionary, Timbrel

Clyde Symonette: Paul is announcing the end of the Exile and the coming of the Kingdom — a Kingdom that’s characterized by the restoration of true, celebrative worship of God, a worship of praise, in a culture and language where “praise” is inclusive of instrumental worship — precisely as prophesied by Jeremiah.

Summary

The words for MELODY are not derived from MUSICAL IDEAS:

And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned (h2167), nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain (The Word of God) upon it. Is.5:6
Is. 5:11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink;
that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Is. 5:12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts:
but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
Is. 5:13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge:

and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

Pruned: Zamar (h2167) zaw-mar'; a prim. root [perh. ident. with 2168 through the idea of striking with the fingers]; prop. to touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument, i. e. play upon it; to make music, accompanied by the voice

The sickle was a curved bronze or iron blade: you could prune the vines so that the remainder produced good grapes or you could beat on it like a musical instrument or cymbal.

Zamar (h2168) zaw-mar'; a prim. root [comp. 2167, 5568, 6785]; to trim (a vine): - prune.

Is. 17:10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation,
and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength,
therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants,
and shalt set it with strange slips:

Strange Slips: h2168 putting a branch to the nose while worshiping the rising sun.

Under the Achaemenids, music served an important function  in worship as well as in courtly entertainment. The bas-reliefs clearly depict groups of singers, players of trigonal harps (chang) accompanied by large tambourines, as well as long necked lutes and double-flutes

The location of this picture (Tyre, Lebanon) places it outside a Zoroastrian  setting. However that is simply the place it was found, not necessarily its point  of origin. The date Dumbrill cites, 1500-1000 BC,  places it at the very beginnings of the religion and well within the context of the traditions that preceded it. The man looks uncannily like a Zoroastrian priest holding baresman (bundle of twigs held by an officiating priest) and tending a fire. The musically noteworthy element in this image is the depiction of a woman possibly playing a drum next to the fire. Also, the presence of the seven celestial bodies is directly Zoroastrian in nature.  The House of Song, Raiomond Mirza.

Zemar (h2170) zem-awr'; from a root corresp. to 2167; instrumental music: - musick.

An Example
: That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden im that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: Da.3:5

WHO is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. Isa 63:1

Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? Isa 63:2

I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. Isa 63:3

Gath (h1660) gath; prob. from 5059 (in the sense of treading out grapes);

Nagan
(h5059) naw-gan'; a prim. root; prop. to thrum, i. e. beat a tune with the fingers; espec. to play on a stringed instrument; hence (gen.) to make music: - player on instruments, sing to the stringed instruments, melody, ministrel, play (-er, -ing..

And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot. Isa 23:15
..........Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered  Is.23:16
For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. Isa 63:4

And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. Isa 63:5

And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. Rev 14:17
.........And another angel came out from the altar,
........ which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry
........ to him that had the sharp sickle [to pluck], saying,
........ Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth;
........ for her grapes are fully ripe. Revelation 14:18
And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. Revelation 14:19

Clyde Symonette: Conclusion

We sometimes think of the New Testament as book of laws issued to replace the Mosaic book of laws and forget that Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17). The Old Testament gives the essential background of the Kingdom that Jesus preached. The Kingdom marks the end of the Exile — a restoration of David to the throne through Jesus and a restoration of the true Temple worship, lost when Solomon’s Temple was destroyed and the Jews were taken captive.

The "service" of the Levites is defined as hard bondage. A musical instrument is a machine for doing hardwork mostly in making war and creating the shock and awe of religious spectacle--the Lying Wonder word.  While those promoting singers into the "holy places" were always noted as gender-compromised, this is considered as NOISE by probably half of the people and does NOT create a giddy joy.

Matthew 28:19. Now thus is faith; when a man believes in God the Lord of all, Who made the heavens and the earth and the seas and all that is in them; and He made Adam in His image; and He gave the Law to Moses; He sent of His Spirit upon the prophets;

He sent moreover His Christ into the world. Furthermore that a man should believe in the resurrection of the dead; and should furthermore also believe in the sacrament of baptism. This is the faith of the Church of God. And (it is necessary) that a man should separate himself from the observance of hours and Sabbaths and moons and seasons, and divinations and sorceries and Chaldaean arts and magic, from fornication and from festive music, from vain doctrines, which are instruments of the Evil One, from the blandishment of honeyed words, from blasphemy and from adultery. And that a man should not bear false witness, and that a man should not speak with double tongue. These then are the works of the faith which is based on the true Stone which is Christ, on Whom the whole building is reared up.

ISRAEL WAS SPLIT BETWEEN A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT AND THE SYNAGOGUE OR SCHOOL OF CHRIST.

Christ defines the Qahal, synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness: it was exclusive of vocal or instrumental rejoicing because the only assembly of the civillians was on the sabbath REST day to study and learn the Word of God.   This had nothing to do with whether they rejoiced over a roast lamb or as with Shepherds.  Jesus still asks "Could you not tarry with me for ONE HOUR?"

The same Christ who DENIED that God commanded the HOLOCAUST of burning innocent animals marked the Civil-Military-Clergy complex as robbers and parasites and liars:

Stand in the gate of the Lords house [courts], and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord. Jeremiah 7:2

Shachah (h7812) shaw-khaw'; a prim. root; to depress, i. e. prostrate (espec. reflex. in homage to royalty or God): - bow (self) down, crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,
Amend your ways and your doings,
and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Jeremiah 7:3

Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these. Jeremiah 7:4

For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings;
        if ye thoroughly
execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; Jeremiah 7:5

If ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow,
        and
shed not innocent blood in this place,
neither walk after other gods to your hurt: Jeremiah 7:6

Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. Jeremiah 7:7

Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. Jeremiah 7:8

> Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. Jeremiah 7:21

21. Put ... burnt offerings unto ... sacrifices ... eat flesh--Add the former (which the law required to be wholly burnt) to the latter (which were burnt only in part), and "eat flesh" even off the holocausts or burnt offerings. As far as I am concerned, saith Jehovah, you may do with one and the other alike. I will have neither (Isa 1:11 Ho 8:13 Am 5:21,22).

Clyde Symonette: This true worship will not be the lamentation of the Exile but the celebration of Jesus on his throne — which allows us to once again to sing the Temple's Songs of Zion, in celebration of the enthronement of the true King David.

Is.14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

Is.24:8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.
Alliyz (g5947) al-leez'; from 5937; exultant: - joyous, (that) rejoice (-ing).
Alaz (g5937) aw-laz'; a prim. root; to jump for joy, i. e. exult: - be joyful, rejoice, triumph.

Isa 14:9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

Isa 14:10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?

Isa 14:11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

A Holy Convocation RESTS from any music Maxey wants to authorize. Paul outlawed the same thing:

Tinkling or clanging is derived from--

Alalazo (g214) al-al-ad'-zo; from alale , (a shout, "halloo"); to vociferate, i.e. (by impl.) to wail; fig. to clang: - tinkle, wail

When Jesus entered the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy (wailing) crowd, Mat 9:23 (He promptly ejected them to do His spiritual work)

And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. Mk 5:38

Mk 5:39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

Matthew 9:23 And when Jesus came into the rulers house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

Auletes (g834) ow-lay-tace'; from 832; a flute- player: - minstrel, piper.

Aoidos A. singer, minstrel, bard, 3. enchanter, chrêsmôn aoidos, III. = eunouchos, Hsch.; cf. doidos. crow as cocks, hoot as owls, twang, of the bow-string, vie with one in singing, [complex harmony is NOT related to melody but is WARFARE]

Alal-azô , fut. -axomai v.l. in E.Ba.593, A. -: (formed from the cry alalai): --raise the war-cry,, nikên alalazein shout the shout of victory, S.Ant.133.

2. generally, cry, shout aloud, Pi.l.c., E.El.855; esp. in orgiastic rites, A.Fr.57; of Bacchus and Bacchae, II. rarely also of other sounds than the voice, sound loudly, psalmos d' alalazei A.Fr.57 ; kumbalon alalazon 1 Ep.Cor.13.1 .-

And Jesus CAST THEM OUT more or less violently--like dung--as Lucifer was cast out of heaven.

Clyde Symonette: The true Temple is, of course, the church (Ephesians 2:19-22), and wherever the church is, the worship of God is restored and the time of Exile is over.

But it’s not just that we get to sing the Temple psalms, understanding their fulfillment in Jesus; we get to enjoy what the Jews were denied — the ability to praise in celebration of the victory that was won in Jesus through singing and instrumental worship.

Because the Jerusalem temple and most temples WORSHIPPED THE STARRY host and was NOT commanded I would rather not: John Chrysostom knew what all competent Bible students knew:

Hence these same "customs" date their origin, hence the sacrifices:
..........they were themselves the first that made sacrifices to their idols!
..........For that is why it is marked,

Editor's Note 7: dia gar touto epishmainetai. The meaning is: Stephen was accused of speaking against "the customs,"-sacrifices, temple, feasts, etc. Therefore he significantly points to that critical conjuncture. from which these "customs" date their introduction: namely, the Provocation at Horeb.
Prior to that, he tells of "living oracles," life-giving precepts:
after it, and as its consequence, sacrifices, etc.,

those statutes which were not good, and ordinances by which a man shall not live, as God says by Ezekiel.

Not a word of sacrifice till then: and the first mention is, of the sacrifices offered to the calf. In like manner, "they rejoiced," "the people ate and drank, and rose up to play:" and in consequence of this, the feasts were prescribed: kai eufrainonto, fhsin: dia touto kai eortai.-'Epishmainetai might be rendered, "he marks," "puts a mark upon it" (so the innovator, who substitutes, touto kai Dauid epishmainomenoj legei): we take it passively, "there is a mark set over it-it is emphatically denoted." In the active, the verb taken intransitively means

"to betoken or announce itself," "make its first appearance."-

As baptized believers we can come boldly before the throne of Grace: any Levite who entered into the holy place (church) or the most holy place (the temple is our spirit) would be executed.

Only male Levites were permitted to sing and play instruments as they "prophesied" meaning as soothsayers. This was NEVER in or close ot any holy thing or place. Therefore, if you want to restore the old infant burning noise makers you will HAVE to take it out in the parking lot from which the CONGREGATION is excluded.

ALL musical instruments were IDOLS and the HOMES of the Idols: that is why they were BAPTIZED:

Hab 2:18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

Hab 2: 19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone,
Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

Hab 2:20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing:
the
words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63

And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 1 Jn 5:19

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 Jn. 5:20

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1Th.2:13

Clyde Symonette: The Jews were mistaken to ban instrumental worship from their synagogues, and it is a mistake to do so in the church, because the temple has been replaced by the church — the temple of God’s Holy Spirit — and that worship had been superseded by worship in Spirit and in truth by assembled believers in Jesus.

The Jews never USED instruments or 'vocal praise' in the synagogue: synagogue was A School (only) of the Word of God (only).  This was ordained as The Church of Christ in the Wilderness and "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" was excluded: in fact, in Psalm 41 this alarm or triumph over was reserved as the way to MARK Judas when Jesus fed him the SOP which has the same root meaning as PSALLO. This was a sign for the Godly that Jesus had been there and gone: the rhetoricians, singers and instrument players REMOVED from the church and their lamps removed.

Stephen said
God granted David a TENT on Mount Zion
But, Solomon built Him a HOUSE on Mount Moriah
But, God does not DWELL IN nor worshipped IN houses built by human hands.

See how Psalm 41 found with the Dead Sea Scrolls prophesied how Beliar or the Devil will attack Messiah with the same vocal and instrumental rejoicing outlawed by God in Exodus 31 but performed in Exodus 32 based on "silence". See Exodus 32 to learn how these people are tempting you to fall from grace.

Clyde Symonette: Mourning was entirely the wrong response. The dawn of the Kingdom and the construction of a new, eternal Temple were cause for celebration — and God, through the Prophets, has taught us how to celebrate such things.

When you musicate you REFUSE to listen to the Word of God just as the Isralites refused to listen to God and TURNED back to musical idolatry. Therefore, the Nadab and Abihu example is a PERFECT FIT: so perfect that false preachers love to ridicule it:

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: Heb 12:25

Jesus is the ONLY Rabbi or Teacher and ONLY when we "teach that which has been taught." Peter spoke of a recorded MEMORY as a MARKER for anyone who would teach otherwise. Paul in Romans 10 and 1 Cor 10 warns of the PLAY which was musical idolatry of the TRINITY and those with EARS will be able to hear the message and LOOK where Paul points to repudiate the musical paganism at Corinth:

Whose voice then SHOOK the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet ONCE MORE I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. Heb 12:26

And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the REMOVING of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken [a trumpet-like word] may remain. Heb 12:27

Wherefore we RECEIVING a KINGDOM which cannot be moved, let us have GRACE,

whereby we may SERVE God acceptably with REVERENCE and godly fear: Heb 12:28

For our God is a consuming fire. Heb 12:29
