Olan Hicks Instrumental: My purpose here is not to defend either the use or non use of instruments in worship. It is rather to show that one’s choice in that issue does not qualify as a matter of fellowship.
Of course, that makes the common claim that Churches of Christ became a sectarian division of the Christian church: that is proven that neither olan nor any unifiers want to unity with the Disciples of Christ and the NACC or Christian church did not began to be a sectarian split from the Disciples until beginning in 1927 and not removed until 1971. What happened in 1906 is that the census taker knew that the Church of Christ did not belong--as claimed--to the organ and society party.
Churches of Christ understand that the Church of Christ (the Rock) is defined as the Holy Convocation where the synagogue asssembled:
It was EXCLUSIVE of vocal or instrumental rejoicing or any self-speak or preachering.
It was INCLUSIVE of REST, Reading and Rehearsing the Word.
That is because the Synagogue was A SCHOOL (only) of the WORD (only) and quarantined from any usual seventh day "worship service."
Thomas Campbell in explaining the declaration and address read the Old Testament and ALL of the definitions in the New Testament until the Disciples used the PSALLO (sop) word as an AXE against the DISCIPLES who refused to believe the false teaching:
CHURCH is a School of Christ
WORSHIP is Reading and MUSING the Word.
None of the groups including the Disciple's preachers at the time thought that "music" had a role in a School Room--beyond kindergarten for heaven's sake.
The date of 1832 was a meeting of some preachers who agreed and DOCUMENTED their "contract" which agreed with the views always held by churches of Christ.
Alexander Campbell denied there could be any "unity" which demanded a creed by the Stoneites before 1832
Both Alexander Campbell and Stone agreed that there could be no unity after 1832 as long as the Reformed Baptists taught their views of the Atonement, church organization and rejected the name CHRISTIAN.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: I believe the pioneers of the restoration movement were right in declaring that only express Bible statements constitute God’s laws and that inferences and deductions are private property and cannot logically be bound as “terms of communion.” Decl. & Address, prop. 6 & 3
The Real Declaration and Address
IV. That this Society by no means considers itself a Church,
nor does at all assume to itself the powers peculiar to such a society;
nor do the members, as such, consider themselves as standing connected in that relation;
nor as at all associated for the peculiar purposes of Church association;but merely as voluntary advocates for Church reformation; and, as possessing the powers common to all individuals, who may please to associate in a peaceable and orderly manner, for any lawful purpose, namely, the disposal of their time, counsel, and property, as they may see cause.
Note: If this cannot describe a denominational structure, it does describe the local congregation. If freedom of individual decision about time, counsel and property cannot be taken away by a large group, it cannot be taken away by a local group.
V. That this Society, formed for the sole purpose of promoting simple evangelical Christianity, shall, to the utmost of its power, countenance and support such ministers, and such only, as exhibit a manifest conformity to the original standard in conversation and doctrine, in zeal and diligence;
There is no preaching, acts of singing, passing the plate, ministers, programs etc exhibited upon the sacred pages. Olan Hicks etal thinks that instrumental discord is acceptable because he thinks that IT IS NOT exihibited as the mark of people silencing the voice of the victim.only such as reduce to practice that simple original form of Christianity,
expressly EXHIBITED upon the sacred page;
Inculcate: instill (an attitude, idea, or habit) by persistent instruction.without attempting to INCULCATE anything of human authority, of private opinion, or inventions of men,
as having any place in
the constitution,
faith,
or worship, of the Christian Church,
or anything as matter of Christian faith or duty,
teach (someone) an attitude, idea, or habit by persistent instruction.
Olan Hicks accepts people wo impose as WORSHIP and DUTY that which he agrees is not on the sacred pages: but, he and they are wrong.
for which there can not be expressly produced a "Thus saith the Lord, either in express terms, or by approved precedent.
There is no positive thus saith the Lord for any kind of congregational music with or without instruments: it was excluded for the church or synagogue and God had abandoned the Civil-Military-Clergy to worship the starry host including burning infants to Moloch in Jerusalem.
Since no one tried to justify instrumental "music" before the Disciples in 1878 and the Bible clearly connects instrumental noise with BURNING and marking those who do not intend to PREACH the Word only, Churches of Christ did not INCULCATE anything derived from the imagination of men.
Olan Hicks thinks there is no command against instruments when Jesus comes so we can learn of Him, He violates the Declaration and Address by blaming the INCULCATED for the sins of the INCULCATOR-and pay them too. Thomas Campbell said that you cannot TEACH or suggest that instruments are approved: the Disciples didn't violate that command: they just brought the organ into churches and told J.W.McGarvey what all imposers say: get over it or get out!
The command from cover to cover was to PREACH the Word (Logos, Regulative principle) by READING the Word on the ONCE A WEEK assembly for education only
Olan Hicks Instrumental: The movement followed this course for about 80 years. But in 1889 Daniel Sommer put forth very powerfully a different idea and the movement began to turn sharply in that direction.
That's utterly false: following the modern pattern the instrumentalists "lying in wait" waited until the new red brick building was finished and then insisted that THEY had a right to impose and organ. The Illinois Supreme Court disagrees with Olan Hicks and said that the Instrumentalists would have to go build their OWN building. They VIOLATED the Declaration by inclulcating, judging and trying to IMPOSE an organ. Daniel Sommer in the most godly language simply said that they would not risk their property by getting close to those willing to lie, cheat and steal the widow's purse.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: It was his idea that anything the Bible is silent about is forbidden and that the choice in that is a fellowship matter.
The Christian and historically ethical view is that people claim that they have the AUTHORITY to impose any and all things which have not been required for the power of the gospel to work and the imposers know will so discord but they intend to get their way by making up the law of SILENCE. It is reasonable to make them prove that they have the right to IMPOSE on others that which has no authority.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: His list of things he thus pronounced wrong to practice included a church treasury, Sunday school classes, a located preacher, and instrumental music in worship. At Sand Creek, Illinois he presented this premise before several thousand brethren and concluded by saying of those who practiced such things, “We cannot and will not regard them as brethren.”
Jesus died to pay it all, Paul denied that there was a Church Treasury along with many others and church history notes that the presiding elder keep the loose change for any collection taken up only for the DESTITUTE by the willing.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: Division with the Christian church was the immediate result and over the next 75 years division after division developed over everything from church buildings to care of orphans to the number of cups for communion, to projectors for preaching etc. The “express scripture statements only” premise had faded from use and in its place was the “law of silence” premise.
However, it is a fact that the DISCORD was laid at the feet of the IMPOSERS usually with a high hand. The Law of Silence is owned by the Disciples-Christians who said if there is not LAW then (being legalists) WE can add something which had NOT been necessary for conducting the School of Christs
Olan Hicks Instrumental: Where as the pioneers said “Where the Bible is silent we are silent” churches of Christ began to say “Where the Bible is silent we place a law of prohibition.”
That LAW OF SILENCE is documented from page to page in the Bible, among the church fathers and supported by all founders of denominations. The Disciple-Christians discovered that they were the INCULCATORS very quickly and desperately needed a BIBLE COMMAND. All of the hostile attacks against Disciples or Churches of Christ who decided that EXCEEDING silence was not an authority God had given anyone. If the preacher running out of money EXCEEDED the law of silence He said in actual ancient and modern hostile take-overs: "SHUT YOUR MOUTH."
No one has ever proposed disfellwship except when men introduce things known to cause godly people to gladly be fleeced.
Daniel Sommer Address at Sand Creek
In other words, the great, deep-toned organ so slurred and blurred and drowned the human voices that no one could distinguish whether they were singing in English, Dutch or Sanskrit. Such music makes teaching by means of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs simply impossible and thus it is evident that it contravenes or comes in conflict with what is divinely authorized.
But this is not all. If those who are offended at the organ were the weakest, most ignorant and least to be esteemed in the church (which they are not),
yet even then it would be a sin to offend them by making an unauthorized instrument a test of fellowship, as is done whenever the organ is put into the meetinghouse and used in connection with the worship, since none can then worship there without seeing it and hearing it--
I say, when such a course is pursued, even if those opposing the organ were the least and the most ignorant, yet that course would be sinful in the sight of heaven.
I read 1 Cor. 8:12, "But when ye sin so against the brethren and wound their weak conscience ye sin against Christ." I also refer you also to Matt. 25th chapter where the Savior said, "Inasmuch as ye did it unto the least of these my brethren ye did it unto me."
This shows beyond controversy that multitudes are in danger of being finally rejected because in this life they have persistently sinned against Christ in sinning against his brethren.
In conclusion on this point I mention again that in favor of the organ in the worship there may be inferences, opinions, views, nothings, preferences
but there is not faith that it is the will of Christ that it should be used in connection with the worship. But "whatever is not of faith is of sin."
Olan Hicks Instrumental: Incidentally, later in life Daniel Sommer came to Freed Hardeman College and spoke an apolology for causing division in the brotherhood.
That's too bad but I am quite certain that he did NOT say that he was wrong for resisting the instrumentalists stealing the brand new red brick church house so everyone could enjoy the "chist of whistles." I am quite certain that up to 2/3 of a congregation who walk out when the instrument is imposed follow the rule of not opposing those who lie and steal their cloak.
Moses Lard and Others rejected the instrument and Alexander Campbell would preach anywhere including before Congress but not before they silenced the organ and the organist.
1Cor. 6:7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? The instrumentalists attempted to DEFRAUD people of that "new red brick church building." Daniel Summer is too honorable to be mentioned by those who boast of "infiltrating and diverting" other people's property to turn it into a theater for holy entertainment. He should have followed Christ even to the cross:
Matt. 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law,
and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.
Luke 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek
offer also the other;
and him that taketh away thy cloke
forbid not to take thy coat also.
1Sam. 12:4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us,
neither hast thou taken ought of any man’s hand.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: In the New Testament we have no express statement concerning instrumental music in worship. In the Old Testament it was lavishly prescribed but the New Testament does not say “Use instruments of music” and it does not say “Do not use instruments of music.”
That's where Preacher's Colleges failed. They may not know that instrumental idolatry was a sin beyond redemption but being legalists those willing to fleece the widow's purse insist that you find a law which says: "They shalt NOT use instruments for doing hard work in they assembly."
The Spirit OF Christ defined the Assembly of Messiah both inclusively and exclusively. That existed in the synagoge at some level which was a Word of God only School. Christ has all of the prophets identify musical instruments with a hostile attack against God.

Olan Hicks Instrumental: Therefore God has not issued a ruling on it in regard to the church age. This is a fact of scripture. So we have to look at other considerations such as what may be implied in scripture, whether such music harmonizes with what God has said, and especially whether anything God has instituted might be affected.
All of the Jews understood that the synagogue of Christ (the Rock) never changed:
It was EXCLUSIVE of vocal or instrumental rejoicing or rhetoric.
it was INCLUSIVE of Rest, Reading and Rehearsing the Word.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: In checking this out we find Jesus rejecting the “law of silence” idea. In Mat. 12:3-4 He reminded the Jews that David and his men entered the temple and ate of the shewbread “which was lawful only for the priests.” He recognized the principle of exclusion but he rejected the idea of an absolute law of exclusion.
God had not commanded the king, kingdom, temple, animal slaughter or the Levites to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter. The TITHE and SABBATH were inherited from Babylon and therefore, the recorded evidence proves that it would not be a law against God to go into the temple. However, the Jacob-cursed and God-abandoned Levites mad noise to prevent any godly person from getting close to the horrors and getting executed.
God abandoned the Jews and the Temple "to worship the starry host." Because it was quarantined behind several gates the horrors were hidden from the public. In 2 Chronicles 29 the Levite "sorcerers" were not permitted into the holy place even to carry out the garbage including the INSTRUMENTS of the Assyrians. If Olan Hick stumpled into the inner court where they slaughtered the innocents and conducted holocaust which God had not commanded, the levites would have run him through with a sword. Jesus would have been murdered if He went into the inner court: he was also murdered for casting out the COLLECTION PLATES perhaps as an APPROVED EXAMPLE.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: It is often argued that while we find musical instruments in use in the Old Testament before the Christian age and
The Levites prophesied with instruments: that means that they were soothsayer-sorcerers and under the King and Commanders of the Army. There is no command, example or remote inference of God calling the godly out for congregational singing with or without instruments.
We also have the vocal and instrumental "play" at the foot of Mount Sinai: this was a sin beyond redemption and the Levites executed 3000 of their idolatrous brethren, God removed the Covenant of Grace and sentenced them back to Babylon for captivity and death.
The instruments were in the hands of ONLY Levites and God said that they made NOISE. The only people who "worshipped' were the small group of officials (never the congregation) who bowed or fell on their face. The Levites performed EXORCISM since they prophesied with instruments meaning soothsaying or sorcery.
Christ in Isaiah 30 defined this picture as God drumming the enemies of God into "hell" with wind, string and percussion instruments.
Olan Hicks Instrumental: in Revelation after the christian age, but no such thing occurs in the Christian age. This is not accurate. In Revelation chapter 5 we find 24 elders and 4 living creatures before the throne of God. They fall down to worship Him and the text says that each one had a harp and that they sang a new song. We know this was in the Christian age because the “lamb” was there and He had died for our salvation. The song they sang was about that lamb. Whether or not these were literal harps is immaterial. The fact that the Bible text says a song was presented to God with harps during the Christian age makes it hard to argue that doing such a thing would incur God’s wrath.

Olan Hicks Instrumental: Our New Testament specifies “psalms” as one kind of church music. (Eph.5 & Col.3) Instruments were used in singing the psalms and Paul did not say they must be excluded in the use of psalms in the church.
The command is to SPEAK that which you do for learning
ODE and PSALLO are IN the heart or mind and MUST be silent for learning to take place
The commanded resource is to "use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for out LEARNING."

There is no command, example or remote inference that the assembly SANG anything. The command was to SPEAK that which is written for our learning. Speak as in LEXIS is the opposite of ODE. The word MUSIC among the Greeks included moving your voice together and moving your body together in dance.

Olan Hicks Instrumental: This is one of many implications that might be considered. So Jesus worshiped at the temple where instruments were used and also worshiped at the synagogue where they were not used, and said nothing about it either way.
Worship means to fall on your face: the only times Jesus went to the temple was to CONFRONT the clergy and turn over their collection plates. You accuse Him of being ignorant and discorders have to IMPLY. Jesus knew that the temple was Herod's Temple and the House of Prayer was the outer court where the collection plates were located. God and Jesus and Paul were NOT ignorant: if they wanted to hint at instruments they had instrument-specific words which Simple Simon would understand:
Psallo never means to PLAY AN INSTRUMENT. If Christ wanted to include an instrument HE was pretty smart and did not depend on latter days.
epi-psallō , A. play the lyre, S.Fr.60, Poll.4.58(Pass.); “melesi kai rhuthmois” Plu.2.713b ; sing, “tous humnous” LXX 2 Ma.1.30:—Pass., Ph.1.626.
psalmōd-ia , A. singing to the harp, Aristid.2.310J.
psal-tikos , ē, on, A. of or for harp playing, ps. organon a stringed instrument, Ath.14.634f (of the magadis); andra psaltikēn agathon a good harpist, Ael. ap. Ar.Byz.Epit.84.8.
psaltōd-eō , A. sing to the harp, LXX 2 Ch.5.13.
An ODE is NOT a Psalm or Hymn
And ODE set to music is:
Mouso-ō , A. furnish with power of song, hosa phusis memousōke,
2. to be set to music, “ta di' ōdēs . . mousōthenta kroumata” D.H.Dem.40, cf. Cat.Cod.Astr.8(3).188; to be filled with melody, “memousōtai ta peri tēn thalattan hup' ōdēs tōn petrōn” Philostr.Her.10.7.
“kitharizein pros tēn ō.”
Olan Hicks Instrumental: It is a Biblically stated fact that worship at the throne of God in heaven during the Christian employed musical instruments. Another implication is the fact that God has never said anything negative about instruments. Every time they are mentioned in the Old Testament it is with lavish approval. Thus while divine approbation on instrumental music in worship is often implied, no dislike or condemnation of instruments is ever implied.
I think instruments are to our singing what the plate is to communion bread, equivalent to song books, tuning forks etc. Many arguments pro and con can be made and have been made. The bottom line is as Paul said in Rom. 14:5, “Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind.” Singing with instruments is not a sin and singing acappella is not a sin. Dividing over “doubtful matters” is forbidden. (Rom. 14:1-6)
If we went back to the “explicit scriptures only” idea unity would be restored with conservative Christian churches and we would double our size and greatly increase our outreach. Make your own choice about instruments and allow everyone else to do the same.
If we went back to Explicit Scriptures only would exclude making your own choice. No one stops anyone from using instruments: the issue is can you lie, cheat and steal other people's property so that everyone is forced to endure YOUR choice.
