Jer. 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the HOUSE of Israel;
After those days, saith the LORD,
I will put my law in their inward parts,
and write it in their hearts;
and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Hos. 6:1 Ά Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
Hos. 6:2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
Hos. 6:3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.
Hos. 6:4 Ά O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.
Hos. 6:5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets;
I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.
Hos. 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
Hos. 6:7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.
Hos. 6:8 Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.
Hos. 6:9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness.
Hos. 6:10 I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled.
Hos. 6:11 Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.

And in the same way, those who take their doctrines the round of our cities,

CENI is one of those RACA words used to define those who believe the Last Great Command of Jesus to GO into all the world, teach, baptize and continue teaching what HE commanded to be taught and observed. Jesus promised to guide the Apostles into all truth and promised to be with the church until the end of the world.
The Spirit OF Christ breathed the Word of God into the writing prophets: they defined the future Church of Christ both inclusively and exclusively. He excluded seeking our own pleasure or speaking our own words. Paul excluded SELF-pleasure meaning all of the performing arts and crafts and commanded that we "use one mind and one mouth" to "teach that which is written for our learning" meaning scripture. Romans 15. No one can say that He is silent.

"In Isa 8:19 the 'obhoth and yidh'onim are spoken of those who 'chirp and mutter." These terms refer to the necromancers themselves who practiced ventriloquism in connection with their magical rites. In Isa 29:4 it is said 'Thy voice shall be as an 'obh, out of the ground.'... They are stamped in these passages, as in the Witch of Endor narrative, as deceivers practising a fraudulent art. By implication their power to evoke spirits with whom they were in familiar intercourse is denied." (Int Std Bible Ency., ency, p. 690)To the law and to the testimony:

2 Peter 1 Identifies a false teacher as one who private interprets or further expounds the prophets by Christ and the prophecies made more certain by Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 2 identifies these destined deceivers and polluters as replacing that Word with all of the hypocritic arts and crafts.
The Instrumental Heresy (secarianism) defined by the SELF-pleasure words
The use of the CENI principle has been used in two ways: Among the Disciples or Christian churches the High Church principle is used which allows people to make changes to make the culture-formed instutite function in a changed culture. Therefore, the Law of Silence permits one to add where God has been silent (or assumed to be silent) and ADD to the institute: afterward one's personal preference becomes the will of Christ. Christ might call it Will Worship. The Greek THEOLOGY demands that you SPEAK the words of the GOD: Scripture such as Isaiah 55 outlaws "speaking your own words on the day of REST."

A modern theology which does NOT speak the Words of God attempts to use parts of COMMANDS and EXAMPLES of the "worship of the starry host" to which God ABANDONED israel because they rejected GRACE and turned to musical idolatry of the trinity of "gods." See how this fall from Grace is being promoted as a new VISION which is claimed to be through NEW SPECTACLES.
The only role of elders is to teach that which has been taught and refute those who oppose it: church is a school of Christ for disciples of Christ. Disciples do not invent ceremonies to seduce or appease the Master Teacher: they simply seek to find all that is possible about the subject being taught.
The Church of Christ in the wilderness had the sole role of Resting, Reading and Rehearsing the Word of God. The synagogue never changed and the ekklesia (assembly) was to read or hear information supplied by a higher authority, discuss it and come to a conclusion.
These hating the principle of CENI imagine in their own heart a form of ceremonial legalism Jesus died to stop. The urge for the use of Instruments while Master Jesus is teaching is left with DENYING that they are subject to anything but their own "preferences."
So, those who deny CENI insist on composing their own songs and sermons worthy of violating the direct command in Isaiah 55 where Christ told us NOT to pay for the free water of the Word.
- Christ in Spirit spoke only through the Prophets (2 Cor. 3; 1 Peter 1:11; Revelation 19:10
- 2 Peter 1 lists the prophecies made more perfect as the SPEAKING material for the church
- One who does not speak that which is written is called a false teacher like a false prophet
- Jesus fullfilled the SPIRIT message and said "My WORDS are SPIRIT and they are life."
- Christ in the prophets defines as BLASPHEMY those who speak out of their own imagination.
- No disciple of Christ would find a need to go beyond what He has revealed to us. Therefore, they are willing to make a law which YOU must obey or cast yourself out of your "synagogue."
BLASPHEMY IS DENYING CHRIST IN THE PROPHETS AND USING THE MONARCHY AS ITS PATTERN.
The first two reasons assert that under the Old Testament, God did not just allow instrumental music, He commanded and blessed it. Rick offered the following passages for these contentions: 2 Chronicles 5:13-14; 7:6; 29:25-26; Psalm 33:1- 3; 92:1-3; 150:1-6.
Never mind that the godly tribes were quarantined. No singer or player went INTO or NEAR a holy thing or place on the penalty of death. Some of these patterns are separated from the last by up to 300 years.
CHRIST IN THE PROPHETS WARNED ABOUT THE LYING PEN OF THE SCRIBES.
Stand in the gate of the Lords house [courts], and proclaim there this word,
and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah,
that enter in at these gates to worship the Lord. Jeremiah 7:2
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,
Amend your ways and your doings,
and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Jeremiah 7:3
Trust ye not in lying words, saying,
The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord,
The temple of the Lord, are these. Jeremiah 7:4
Jer. 8:8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is WITH US?
LO, CERTAINLY IN VAIN MADE HE IT;
THE PEN OF THE SCRIBES IS in vain.
For I spake NOT unto your fathers, nor commanded them
in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,
concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: Jeremiah 7:22
Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on John,
That the Pharisees puffed up unto strange boasting,
were wont to pretend that the Divine Word was with them and in them,
and therefore foolishly affirmed that they had advanced to marvellous wisdom,
the Spirit Itself will testify,
since Christ says by the Prophet Jeremiah unto them,
How do ye say, WE are wise, and the word of the Lord is with us?
For nought to the scribes became their lying pen;
the wise men were ashamed, were dismayed and taken;
what wisdom is in them? because they rejected the word of the Lord.
For how are they not taken rejecting the Living and Hypostatic Word of God,
receiving not the faith to Him-ward,
but dishonouring the Impress of God the Father,
and refusing to behold His most true Form (so to say)
through His God-befitting Authority and Power?
THE PROPHECIES BY CHRIST WERE FULFILLED BY JESUS CHRIST: JESUS AND PETER MAKES THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS THE ONLY TRUTH.
John 6:44 No man can come to me,
except the Father which hath sent me draw him:
and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:45 It is WRITTEN IN THE PROPHETS
And they shall be all taught of God.
Every man therefore that hath heard,
and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
2Pet. 3:2 That ye may be mindful of the words
which were spoken before by the HOLY PROPHETS
and of the commandment of us the APOSTLES of the Lord and Saviour:
IT WAS THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST WHO SPOKE THROUGH THE PROPHETS AND NOT LYING SCRIBES whom He called hypocrites by naming speakers, singers and instrument players in Ezekiel 33.
1Pet. 1:10 Of which salvation the PROPHETS have inquired and searched diligently,
who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1Pet. 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time
the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify,
when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ,
and the glory that should follow.
God did NOT speak through the lying pen of the Scribes who recorded the Monarchy which God had NOT commanded.
Heb. 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners
spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Heb. 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us BY HIS SON
whom he hath appointed heir of all things,
by whom also he made the worlds;
Heb. 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory,
and the express image of his person,
and upholding all things by the WORD of his power,
when he had by himself purged our sins,
sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high
THOSE WHO DELIBERATELY SOW DISCORD BY QUOTING THE LYING PEN OF THE SCRIBES (hypocrites: speakers, singers, instrument players) are defined by the Spirit:
Jer. 23:16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts,
Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you:
they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart,
and not out of the mouth of the LORD.
Jer 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me,
The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace;
and they say unto every one that walketh
after the imagination of his own heart,
No evil shall come upon you.

INCLUSIVE of Rest, Reading and Rehearsing the Word of God: What Disciples of Christ do.
EXCLUSIVE of Vocal or Instrumental rejoicing: what discipled do not do when God speaks through His Words.
The Synagogue is defined and never changed: the only reason for calling the Godly non-Levites into assembly was for instructions.
The synagogue continued parallel to the curse of the Sacrificial System: God abandoned the Levi tribe to worship the starry host and those are the "gods" worshipped in all animal sacrifices before and after the Temple. The Military Levite Instrument players were under the king and the commanders of the Army and not worship leaders. Even then, any Levite singer or instrument player who came NEAR any holy thing or INSIDE of any holy house was to be executed.
The Scribes wrote for the cursed Monarchy and we are warned not to believe the "Lying pen of the Scribes" when they heap praise on the Temple. Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites and in the Ezekiel 33 version named slick preachers, singers and instrument players. The Pharisees specificially ignored the Words of God and composed their own songs and sermons as a way to get around the law against them: In Isaiah 55 Christ defined the free water of the Word and in AIsaiah 58 defined the future REST and outlawed seeking our own pleasure or speaking our own words. Scribes and Pharisees still do that.
WE ARE STUCK WITH THE WORD OF GOD OR REST ON OUR OWN IMAGINATION.
The Law of Silence as permissive for ME to impose something on YOU was not something invented on those who come near to cursing those who will not let them impose instruments into what they have always honored, in the Words of the Campbells, as a School of Christ: worship was Reading and Musing the word of God which God insisted on because He is God and we are not.
THE MILITARY LEVITES MAKING INSTRUMENTAL NOISE DURING THE BURNING OF GOATS IS USED TO PROVE THAT GOD COMMANDS INSTRUMENTAL PRAISE FOR US..
In 2 Chronicles 29 people imagine that God commanded the Instruments of the Levites as a plague stopping exorcism by looking back almost 300 years when David made a plague stopping sacrifice is THEIR patternism as a DIRECT COMMAND for them.

The only authentic spiritual information is delibered by the Prophets and Apostles. You certainly use "music to make the lambs silent before the slaughter." However, ANYTHING you speak imagining silence comes out of your own imagination.
Remember that it comes from the Words of God or it comes out of your own imagination: there is no silence. However, those who presume to speak where God has not spoken are guilty of blasphemy:Jer 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me,
The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace;
and they say unto every one that walketh
after the imagination of his own heart,
No evil shall come upon you.
Christ says you are a wicked blasphemer if you pretend to speak when God has not commanded.

Chapter XI.-The Law Abrogated; The New Testament Promised and Given by God."There will be no other God, O Trypho, nor was there from eternity any other existing" (I thus addressed him), "but He who made and disposed all this universe. Nor do we think that there is one God for us, another for you, but that He alone is God who led your fathers out from Egypt with a strong hand and a high arm. Nor have we trusted in any other (for there is no other), but in Him in whom you also have trusted, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob.
But we do not trust through Moses or through the law; for then we would do the same as yourselves. But now -(for I have read that there shall be a final law, and a covenant, the chiefest of all, which it is now incumbent on all men to observe, as many as are seeking after the inheritance of God.
Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.For the law promulgated on Horeb is now old, and belongs to yourselves alone; but this is for all universally. Now, law placed against law has abrogated that which is before it,
and a covenant which comes after in like manner has put an end to the previous one;
and an eternal and final law-namely, Christ-has been given to us,
and the covenant is trustworthy,
after which there shall be no law, no commandment, no ordinance.
Have you not read this which Isaiah says: "Hearken unto Me, hearken unto Me, my people; and, ye kings, give ear unto Me: for a law shall go forth from Me, and My judgment shall be for a light to the nations. My righteousness approaches swiftly, and My salvation shall go forth, and nations shall trust in Mine arm? '
And by Jeremiah, concerning this same new covenant, He thus speaks: "Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand, to bring them out of the land of Egypt' ).
CENI is a raca word only by those who insist that THEY have the right to ADD to the New Covenant if Christ has not said: "Thou shalt not use instruments in the School of Christ.
Or they believe that God COMMANDED instruments under the Old Covenant: He did not. Instruments were under the King and Commanders of the army when the elders "fired" God and demanded that a human king lead them. The Law of Moses said nothing about the use of instruments as a way to "attrackt" or earn credit for the worshiper. The Testimony of the Prophets said nothing in favor of instruments and universally condemned them as a mark of people who have FIRED God.
The Synagogue outlawed vocal or instrumental rejoicing and that COMMAND was never dishonored in the Old Testament. Christ has NOT changed the inclusive and exclusive role of the synagogue or Church.
Therefore, those who IMPOSE instruments as a LAW which others must obey, despise the Words of Christ.
Origen Book VI, Againmst Celsus who promotes Greek theology
XIX I do not indeed, deny that Plato learned from certain Hebrews the words quoted from the Phaedrus, or even, as some have recorded, that he quoted them from a perusal of our prophetic writings, when he said:
See how Phaedrus defines the Greek practice SINGING their text to inspire people into a charismatic feeling: that is actively promoted as the WORSHIP WARS invaded happy congregations to turn them into theaters for "holy entertainment."
"No poet here below has ever sung of the super-celestial place, or ever will sing in a becoming manner," and so on. And in the same passage is the following: "For the essence, which is both colourless and formless, and which cannot be touched, which really exists, is the pilot of the soul, and is beheld by the understanding alone; and around it the genus of true knowledge holds this place."
Our Paul, moreover, educated by these words, and longing after things "supra-mundane" and "super-celestial," and doing his utmost for their sake to attain them, says in the second Epistle to the Corinthians: "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are unseen are eternal."
Origen XLI In the next place, as if he had forgotten that it was his object to write against the Christians, he says that,
the latter told him, with respect to magic arts,
"having become acquainted with one Dionysius, an Egyptian musician,
that it was only over the uneducated and men of corrupt morals that they had any power,
while on philosophers they were unable to produce any effect,
because they were careful to observe a healthy manner of life."
Vulgate translates, "They turn thy words into a song of their mouths." heart goeth after covetousness--the grand rival to the love of God; therefore called "idolatry," and therefore associated with impure carnal love,as both alike transfer the heart's affection from the Creator to the creature.
Singing with or without instruments drove pagans into a "feeling" or madness in Paul's warning to Corinth. They believed that the "thrill" of hearing the almost always prostitute or sodomite "ministers of the mother goddess" was the "spirits" or "demons" invading their souls. Socrates. Yes, quite admirable; the effect on me was ravishing. And this I owe to you, Phaedrus, for I observed you while reading to be in an ecstasy, and thinking that you are more experienced in these matters than I am, I followed your example, and, like you, my divine darling, I became inspired with a phrenzy.
Phaedrus. Indeed, you are pleased to be merry.
Socrates. Do you mean that I am not in earnest?
Phaedrus. Yes, Socrates, you seem to have a very unusual flow of words.Socrates. Listen to me, then, in silence; for surely the place is holy; so that you must not wonder, if, as I proceed, I appear to be in a divine fury [wrath Paul warned about], for already I am getting into dithyrambics.
Phaedrus. Nothing can be truer.
Socrates.Clement of Alexander: "After having paid reverence to the discourse about
God, they leave within [at church] what they have heard.
And outside they f oolishly amuse themselves with impious playing, and amatory quavering (feminine vibrato), occupied with flute-playing, and dancing, and intoxication, and all kinds of trash.
But now to pass from this to the shameless corruption of the stage. I am ashamed to tell what things are said; I am even ashamed to denounce the things that are done-the tricks of arguments, the cheatings of adulterers, the immodesties of women, the scurrile jokes, the sordid parasites,
All Bible students know better than to use the Levitical Musicians who "prophesied" meaning "to make themselve mad and vile."
"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).
"In the New Testament there is nowhere any emphasis laid on the musical form of the hymns; and in particular none on instrumental accompaniment whereas this is significantly paganism." (Delling, Gerhard, Worship in the New Testament, trans. Percy Scott Phil. Westminster press, 1962, p. 86).
Jerusalem, which was taken over by the Amorites in Abraham's time, later became a citadel of control by the aristocracy of rulers and court priests. These are the ones who killed the true prophets as Jesus mentioned in Matthew 23. The prophet Jeremiah refers to Jerusalem as the harlot in Jeremiah 3:1. Ezekiel refers to Jerusalem as the harlot in Ezekiel 16:15 and 16:35. When Jesus pronounced God's judgement upon Jerusalem, he said there are days of vengeance and great wrath upon it (Luke 21:22.). And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Revelation 11:8Acts 4:19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them,
Gal 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants;
the one from the mount Sinai,
which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia,
and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
- God gave Israel The Book of The Covenant of Grace.
- They rose up to PLAY which Paul in 1 Cor 10 identifies as demonism: musical idolatry.
Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.Acts 4:20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Jer 13:8
Thus saith the Lord, After this manner will I mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem. Jer 13:9
This evil people, which refuse to hear my words,
........which walk in the imagination of their heart, [twisted]
........and walk after other gods, to serve them,
........and to worship them, shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing. Jer 13:10Paul outlaws doubtful disputations in Romans 14 by the sects marked by DIET but all who practiced musical worship.
Disputing implies a questioning mind and suggests an arrogant attitude by those who assume theyre always right. Arguing with others in the body of Christ is disruptive. Thats why Paul spent the first part of chapter 2 on humility.
To dwell above, with saints we love, that will be grace and glory
But to live below with saints we know, now thats a different story!Dialogismos is used 14 times in the NAS (Matthew; Mark; Luke 6x; Romans 2x; 1 Corinthians; Philippians; 1 Timothy; James) and is translated as: argument, 1; disputing, 1; dissension, 1; doubts, 1; motives, 1; opinions, 1; reasonings, 2; speculations, 1; thoughts, 3; what...were thinking, 2
Dialogismos is used 11 times in the Septuagint (LXX) (Ps 40:5, 56:5, 92:5, 94:11, 139:2, 139:20, 146:4, Isa 59:7, Jer 4:14, Lam 3:60-61) Dialogismos often means the perverse, vain thinking which contemplates destruction (Ps. 94:11), and is turned against God (Jer. 4:14; Isa. 59:7) and against the godly (Ps. 56:5).
Commenting on Phil 2:14, MacArthur notes that dialogismos...
soon developed the more specific ideas of questioning, doubting, or disputing the truth of a matter. In Romans 14:1, the word is used of passing judgment on another believers opinions and in 1 Timothy 2:8 it is rendered dissension. Whereas grumbling is essentially emotional, disputing is essentially intellectual. A person who continues to murmur and grumble against God will eventually argue and dispute with Him. (MacArthur, J. Philippians. Chicago: Moody Press)

The Vineyard purpose driven music is "to bring on a sexual-lik climax with the spirit." The New Wineskins is a direct takeoff of the Vineyard movement. And the goal is to produce ENRAPTURED and ENTHUSIASTIAC feelings by using music. Philo invented this word as Enthus O Mania which means to be filled with mania or the MAD prophesying Paul outlawed. They call it DRUNK ON THE SPIRIT and this is a MARK that people have rejected the direct command to use THAT WHICH IS WRITTEN or to TEACH THAT WHICH HAS BEEN TAUGHT.

Many throughout Church history have followed the example of the Bereans in measuring oral traditions against Scripture. Notice carefully how Irenaeus, writing as early as the 2nd century, recognized that what was "one time proclaimed in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures." He is saying plainly that what was once inspired oral tradition in the Apostolic era was by the will of God written down at some time.
........ Humble yourselves, sit down:
........ for your principalities shall come down, even the crown of your glory.
Irenaeus (ca. 150)
Against Heresies 3.1.1
We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith.

Thomas Aquinas (12251274)
Summa Theologiae, Question 1, art. 8
For our faith rests on the revelation made to the Prophets and Apostles who wrote the canonical books.
The Old and New testament is filled with proof that Christ in Spirit spoke ONLY through the prophets all of whom radically condemn the practices--especially music--of robbers and parasites. That is what God promised when the "elders" demanded a king like the nations when God understood that they "wanted to worship like the nations. They would but only on their way into captivity and death.
Therefore, there are no commands, examples or inferences derived from the CURSED MONARCHY which were either approved or used by the common people who attended synagogue or church in the wilderness.
Commands, Examples and Necessary Inferences have always been the way God taught and authorized what He wanted from mankind. These are not LAWS which regulate but which FREE people from stumbling blocks. A necessary inference in the minds of the Restoration Movement came into play when OTHERS attempted to impose some non-Biblical item of faith or practice and demanded that others had to follow. Reformation or Restoration is not a new law but "laws" to be used defensively to allow individuals to free themselves from religious rituals.
When God wants to teach use He has always spoken face to face or mouth to mouth. It was the Spirit OF Christ which breathed on the prophets to repudiate much of what the Israelites fell into when they rejected the Word of God and turned back to musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. Stephen and many others say that God TURNED THEM OVER to worship the starry host and this is well documented by the prophets. God defined The Book of the Covenant and DID NOT say, "thou shalt not engage in musical idolatry." Who, in the name of common sense would need such a law?
The people not connected with the civil-military-priestly class were quarantined from this Gentile or Goyim sacrificial system by calling them into assembly as the Qahal or "church in the wilderness." There they were not to be stirred up with "instruments and making a joyful noise before the Lord" which was the warrior's panic music or used for other vital communicating purpose where 'uncertain sounds' could not be made by the common people.
The concept that God's silence is a divine oversight like the "hole in the donut" which He has left for humans to fill in. Of course, we know that the hole has a purpose. If you do what God commands and do not see the need to ENHANCE or improvise then you will never need the authority of "silence" as authority. If you are repelled at obeying God then you do not follow the example of Jesus Christ.
God has the right to command, example and give evidence from which we might infer: if not, then we take more liberty than we give to God. A sign, for instance, is
Sκmeion II. sign, token, indication of anything that is or is to be, 2. in reasoning, a sign or proof, 3. in the Logic of Arist., a sign used as a probable argument in proof of a conclusion, b. in Stoic and Epicurean philos., sign as observable basis of inference to the unobserved or unobservable,Rubel Shelly says of sillence: It's not a Bible verse. It's a well-worn religious slogan that I think has some very positive value.

What Makes Us Who We Are (5 of 7) A Cappella MusicRubel Shelly has been a founding father of the "core" gospel which rejects commands, examples, inferences or that there are any "patterns" in the New Testament for the church. We reviewed a sermon at Woodmont Hills, which had as its only "core value" the repudiation of defending the non-instrumental music position.

believes and teaches:
Here is what God wants churches passionate about: (1) "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, (2) that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). (But: The Israelites had to "look upon" the serpent) John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. (3) "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ" (Acts 2:36). (But: Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.) (4) "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: (5) While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (6) Since we have now been justified by his blood, (7) how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!" (Rom. 5:8-9). (But: Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.) These are the essentials of Christian faith. It is this core message about Jesus that we share
Outside the essence of the gospel,
When the kingdom did not come as Christ promised those who wrote the Bible went their own ways. John, for instance, hooked up with a Greek philosopher and borrowed the LOGOS concept and used it to explain Jesus Christ. However, either unknown or ignored is the fact that the LOGOS concept begins where John places it: in Genesis. Too bad that scholars miss the fact that DABAR is the Hebrew word.
Rubel Shelly: They had to strain the story of Jesus through philosophical sieves. They had to create and clarify special terms. They made entrance into their circles a matter of "enlightenment" as reflected in peculiar vocabulary and interpretations.
Notice that: The little stories were strained through the Shelly Sifter of philosophy and the Bible writer's personal agenda: these are not TRUTH as the Gospel is TRUTH. The Big Story or the CORE GOSPEL has survived through these little stories. Our conclusion: The CORE is no more reliable than the sum of its parts: why should we trust Rubel Shelly's CORE GOSPEL as the TRUTH? Dr. Shelly defines the narrative form as writers taking the literature and constructing a narrative for their own time, place, theological agenda and by sifting in Greek philosophy. |
If this is the Pattern we are th Behold then it becomes easy to just dismiss specific Biblical commands to follow the commands of God and (wink, wink!) tell the paying audience that they don't exist any longer. The "Core Gospel" Dr. Rubel Shelly and probably most university educated men majoring in about everything but the Bible consists of these seven facts. For some mysterious reason you can believe that God loved the world but you cannot believe that He was competent to back up the gospel or "good news" with Doctrine which means "the teachings of Jesus." Click for some other Patternism Minus the Bible.
The Bible is to be believed about the "core" gospel but the teachings of Jesus, by the apostles and in church history about baptism can be ignored because it is not the self-defined CORE CREED.
How can I be interested in "knowing" Jesus if I have utter contempt for knowing "about" Jesus? Here is the core without the rest of the apple:
1 Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
Paul did not say I determined not to PREACH anything among you. To KNOW Christ means that Paul abandoned his own rights and preaching philosophy and preached the Gospel by his life BECAUSE the people were carnal and most unable to eat the "meat" of the Word as the "perfected."
Well, that certainly leaves out baptism and any instructions about a new form of "singing" which is antithetical to the pagan wineskin singing with instruments. Or does it?
1 Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Paul preached the "core" gospel because that is what you preach until people are willing to die to self and submit. Paul called that the "milk" of the Word. The Corinthians never grasped the "core" and therefore remained carnal:
1 Cor 3:1 AND I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
Therefore, those who claim just the "core" probably have not gotten beyond the core and have crucified themselves with Christ. Therefore, they are carnal and there is no "meat of the Word" in them to preach to you. However, the new "milk" of the word to show contempt for people and leave them in the dark is called: "Chicken Soup for the Soul."
The "core" theology shows that Paul nor Christ speaks to them because they just skipped Paul's statement about TEACHING:
1 Cor 2:1 AND I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring [preaching] unto you the testimony OF God.
AND there s come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isaiah 11:1
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Isaiah 11:2But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Zechariah 7:11And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: Isaiah 11:3
They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry. Zechariah 7:12Therefore it is come to pass, that
as he cried, and they would not hear;
so they cried, and I would not hear,
saith the Lord of hosts: Zechariah 7:132 Cor. 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
2 Cor. 3:16 Nevertheless, when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
2 Cor. 3:17 Now the Lord IS that Spirit: and where the Spirit OF the Lord is, there is liberty.
2 Cor. 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Pe 1:11
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Rev 19:10
So, Paul did not say: "I preach only Christ and Him crucified but I preach the whole counsel of God." My "knowing Christ" defines my qualification for a competent preacher: I am willing to be sacrificed.
Churches of Christ do not follow either the Bible or Restoration Movement beliefs by binding "inferences" which are subject to human reasoning.
However, Necessary Inference is a first requirement for grasping God:
The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory. Psalm 97:6
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead;
so that they are without excuse: Romans 1:20Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Romans 1:21Those who cannot infer God from His creation are not likely to listen to His words.
Theophilus of Antioch to Autolycus wrote:
Chapter V.-The Invisible God Perceived Through His Works.
For as the soul in man is not seen, being invisible to men, but is perceived through the motion of the body,
..........so God cannot indeed be seen by human eyes,
..........but is beheld and perceived through His providence and works. For, in like manner, as any person, when he sees a ship on the sea rigged and in sail, and making for the harbour,
will no doubt infer that there is a pilot in her who is steering her; so we must perceive that God is the governor [pilot] of the whole universe, though He be not visible to the eyes of the flesh, since He is incomprehensible.
For if a man cannot look upon the sun, though it be a very small heavenly body, on account of its exceeding heat and power, how shall not a mortal man be much more unable to face the glory of God, which is unutterable?
Therefore, the whole knowledge about God is revealed in propositional truth or it is inferred from His Works.
However, in meeting on the first day of the Week to "break bread" or to "lay by in store" (even if at home) we have the only examples the Bible gives us. We might use the law of inference to say that God DID NOT say: "Don't take the Lord's Supper anyother day." With this inference from silence in hand we decide to eat the Lord's Supper on, say, the Sabbath (before sunset Saturday).
By this inference which overrides the clear Biblical example and the historical imitation of this practice with no Sabbath worship, we BIND this practice on anyone who chooses to meet with us.
On the contrary, we might say that:
> The in the yearly FESTIVALS for muster age males, both the FIRST DAY and the SEVENTH DAY was for REST and a Holy Convocation. Animal sacrifices were held in between. REST never meant worship so we don't LOOK for rules of worship on the first and seventh day. The REST was to quarantine the people of God from the BABYLONIAN worship which God granted as His answer to their prayer when they engaged in MUSICAL IDOLATRY at Mount Sinai.
The Holy Convocation boiled down to READING the Word of God.
> Jesus died to relieve us from the CLERGY BURDEN which was "spiritual anxiety created by religious ritual." The first day was again for REST and both Jesus and Paul PEELS the clergy off the backs of people. Jesus invited the twos and threes to "come learn of me." Therefore, the Bible and history shows that the HOLY CONVOCATION or assembly (synagoguing) was to GIVE HEED to the Word as Paul's only worship word.
> Therefore, first day assembly does not violate the Sabbath. Church assemblies can be the most "works intensive" day of the week.
Furthermore, "worship" on the Sabbath would violate the Sabbath in the modern sense because we couldn't drive to church and assuredly push stuck autos out of a snowed-in parking lot. Most assuredly the HOLY CONVOCATION outlawed calling priests or prophets or other CEREMONIALLY LEGALISTIC parasites defined as rhetoricians, sOPHISts (serpents), singers and musicians. One exception--if you plan to CRUCIFY and MUSICIALLY MOCK Jesus while He is trying to teach you.
The use of instrumental music is based on silence: "God didn't say, 'Thou shalt not use mechanical instruments'." The inference is that silence is divine authority.
By this inference form silence we overide the clear commandment of Paul who defines one of the "allowable instruments" or the human voice and heart. We bind this inference upon anyone who must meet with us on our terms.

The MASK they hide about is patternism or denying that God has the right to command people. However, the FACE behind the mask is that it is NOT a method of interpretation but the fact that they DENY the inspiration of the Bible. That gives them the "spirit" to do what they deny God the power to do.Leroy Garrett stated an earlier pattern:
"This is to say that the gospel is not the whole of the New Testament scriptures,..........
..........for the gospel was a reality long before the scriptures were written.
Strictly speaking, the teachings of the apostles are not facts, as the gospel is,
but interpretations, implications, and edification based on the gospel. In this area, that of the didache (teaching) even the apostles differed in their ideas and emphases.
The churches for whom these documents were written were likewise different from each other.Garrett goes on to define the "gospel" as something revealed but not subject to debate but:
The doctrine allows for debate and dialogue, for intellectual stimulation and the stretching of the mind. It nurtures us in Christ,
but in such a way that each man develops according to his own uniqueness. The pragmatic mind as well as the speculative mind finds food for thought. Its design is (not) to make us all alike in our thinking, but to make us mature in Christ.
So, we have the "oral gospel" which was in effect before the "graphe," and the seven ones defined above are the only things which we can use to accept or reject fellowship.
All of the rest of the Bible is just pre-post-modern understandings of the apostle-prophets opinions or interpretations. That means "uninspired" to this writer.
The Post-Modern "hermeneutic" of the Latter Rain (or Latter Reign) asks:
"Are you having difficulty discerning or receiving this "new revelation"?
Then you have been interpreting your Bible in the "old way,"
comparing Scripture with Scripture, studying diligently to account for every jot and tittle
and being careful to rightly divide the Word of truth."If this describes you, then you belong to the "Old Generation"
which will not enter in to "possess the land" in the Latter Rain Revival.
You may even be a member of a denominational church, with its dogmatic confession of faith and statement of doctrine. These legalistic forms will be relics of the past in the up and coming "Post-denominational Church."Paul Cain advises that you "dump all that carnal stuff" (doctrine)
and listen to what the "spirit" is saying to the churches through the Latter Rain Prophets and Apostles, who are dispensing many "new, sacred truths.
Rubel continues to repudiate the ONLY means of determining authority for faith and practice unless guided by a direct operation of God. However, we will show that the disparaged methods of understanding authority were those taught by the Word of God and by all historical scholars other than the liberties taken by the Catholic church and her daughters.
Rubel Shelly: The truth be told, the Bible's "silence" on a subject is most often ambiguous rather than either prohibitive or concessive. What one is willing to allow or quick to oppose is, I fear, due more to taste and temperament than to any clear application of the following cherished dictum: "Where the Bible speaks, we speak; where the Bible is silent, we are silent."
One doubts that God is ever ambiguous in addition to being prohibitive or concessive. If He doesn't care one way or another He probably is silent.
Rubel Shelly: But hold on! Where did that dictum come from? It's not a Bible verse. It's a well-worn religious slogan that I think has some very positive value.
All of God's Word is pretty old but unfortunately, based on most sermons, not very worn! Whatever the Incarnate God of the universe says should be important and will be vitally important to those whose light has not been put out:
Why then, when they have invented on their part unscriptural phrases,So, let's put some wear on some of the "slogans" from the voice of the Spirit of Christ (1 Peter 1:11) as HE formulated the slogan which I take as a command.
for the purposes of irreligion,
do they accuse those who are religious in their use of them
For irreligiousness is utterly forbidden, though it be attempted to disguise it with artful expressions and plausible sophisms; but religiousness is confessed by all to be lawful, even though presented in strange phrases, provided only they are used with a religious view, and a wish to make them the expression of religious thoughts. Now the aforesaid grovelling phrases of Christ's enemies have been shewn in these remarks to be both formerly and now replete with irreligion; whereas the definition of the Council against them, if accurately examined, will be found to be altogether a representation of the truth, and especially if diligent attention be paid to the occasion which gave rise to these expressions, which was reasonable, and was as follows:-
19. The Council wishing to do away with the irreligious phrases of the Arians, and to use instead the acknowledged words of the Scriptures, Athanasius in 346 and his flight in 356, De Decretis or Defence of the Nicene Definition
Balaam demonstrated a high ethical standard when he said:
'Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold,.
I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad,
to go beyond the command of the LORD--
and I must say only what the LORD says'? Num 24:13
When you let the twangers and sangers take over it is a MARK that you do not know nor care what the Bible says. We could quote the fact that God is God and you are not and that GOD says that He directs our ways and further says that YOU do not have the brain cells to INTERPRET God's Mind.
The "strong delusions" proves that some people CANNOT sit down and let God do the guiding. The SPIRIT'S name is Jesus Christ the Righteous and He HAS SPOKEN in a face-to-face manner to the PROPHETS and APOSTLES: you guys are neither.
Jer. 10:21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD:
therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
Jer. 10:22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come,
and a great commotion out of the north country,
to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.
Jer. 10:23 O LORD,
I know that the way of man is not in himself:
it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
Jer. 10:24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
Deut. 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God:
but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever,
that we may do all the words of this law.
Dan. 2:22 He revealeth the deep and secret things:
he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.It seems to this reviewer that to demand that we find a command or "paradigm" about how to interpret "commands, examples and inferences" may be legalistic. However, because God is there and He is not silent let's look at some examples in the old "written" Word:
Rubel Shelly, Leroy Garret and Latter Rains insists that there is no command, example or inference about "command, examples or inferences." If we find one then these people are teaching error. Rubel sees the Exodus as a "pattern foor worship and community" but the Bible and all but modern theology sees it as a people rising up to play in musical idolatry, losing the Book of the Covenant and burdened with the Book of the Law. Paul in 2 Corinthians 3 says that the unbelievers were DEAF AND BLIND and so could not listen to God until they turned to Christ.
God promised that in contending for the faith in the time of Jesus:
For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. Deut 18:14
The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; Deut 18:15
According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly,
saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. Deut 18:16And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. Deut 18:17
I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. Deut 18:18
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. Deut 18:19
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name,
which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods,
even that prophet shall die. Deut 18:20Jesus honored the Law of Silence. The term "Son" is defined as the faithful WORDS of the "Father." Jesus identified a son of the Devil as a liar because "he speaks on his own."
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. Jn.12:49
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. Jn.12:50
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends;
for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Jn.15:15
If the revelation of Jesus even to the prophets (1 Pet 1:11; Rev 19:10) is not AN APPROVED EXAMPLE to speak only what has been revealed then a different Jesus is being spoken. Jesus identified the Devil as a SON of his father because "he speaks on his own."
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Matt 12
Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. Matt 13
Therefore, if Christ is not speaking to you through His Words it is because you have declared yourself a mortal enemy to the quiet Spiritual truth: that is the MARK or supernatural sign seen in pompous self-speak.
Lucky we don't stone prophets anymore because those who pretend to be doctors of the law and claim to speak with authority and deliberately or ignorantly misteach, are presumptious prophets and perhaps have already died spiritually.
So, if commands, examples and inferences (how else would God teach?) are not good enough for the NEW prophet they were still good enough for Jesus!
Paul insisted that the "elders teach the Word as it had been delivered to them." Therefore, there was no command, example or inference that one could be hired to refuse to listen to the Word and spend all week composing (or stealing) a sermon outline which just thides the truth.
First Samuel Slogan
Those wanting to get on the Fried Chicken Trail with nothing to offer but the "core" would just not go away in the mind of God because:
I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind (Spirit). I will firmly establish his house, and he will minister before my anointed one always. 1 Samuel 2:35
Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a crust of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat. 1 Samuel 2:36
> The people did not obey Moses who spoke the Book of the Covenant to the people. They took the oath but as soon as Moses went back to get the written "seventy rules or enabling legislation" the people fell back into musical idolatry. The Covenant was a covenant of grace.
> As a result, God gave The Book of the Law whose 413 precepts "were not good because they could not be perfectly kept." One who is going to live under the Law of Moses had better be prepared, according to James, "not to even show partiality" or the whole weight of the law will fall on their head. The Law was a book of legalism.
> The Book of the Law of Moses which contained laws "in addition" to the Covenant of life was to regulate lawless people and not to save them. The ordinances were for external and not internal purposes.
> Therefore, when the New Prophet came, He fulfilled but did not enforce the Law of Moses but had men like Paul leapfrog the Law and return to the Covenant of Abraham.
> Therefore, the prophet like Moses had something radically new to teach.
The "family" name is not "God" but Jesus, Joshua or Jehovah Saves. The word "Christ" or the anointed one is also applied to Him and the church being Christ's church has been known down through history as the church of Christ. Jesus is Greek rather than Hebrew.
Isaiah Eight Slogan
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits (Old, empty wineskins), and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter (these people used musical devices and said that the gods lived inside of them): should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Isaiah 8:19
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word,
it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20At baptism a taught believer asks God for a new conscience or consciousness: the ability to be a co-percepter with Christ and be able to comprehend His Word and See His Light. If one does not return to the "word as it has been taught" then they are just making up their own scripture.
Wouldn't this mean: "Speak where the Word speaks and (implied) be silent where the Word is silent?" Sounds good to me. Perhaps God was just judgmental.
The "law" against speaking where God has not spoken is restated many times and is twofold:
First, the Word of God is inspired by the Spirit of Christ. If you speak where God has been silent then you put yourself above God, you speak of yourself, and Jesus defines such a one as a devil.
Second, if you don't let the Word lie where God placed it and permit latter-day prophets to "fill in the blanks" which "God overlooked" you open up the floodgate for all of the Satans to speak of their father.
The peepers and mutterers used the familiar spirit. This was an old, empty wineskin or, in Paul's day, the more sophisticated sounding brass and tinkling cymbals. By speaking into the echoing wineskin the witch disguised her own voice and sold it to the public for a price. Isn't most performance singing with mics and amps just disguising their voices so that the peeps and mutters overpowers the "audience?"
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Is.58:13

Jesus pointed to these prophets accusing the Scribes and Pharisees with being hypocrites--speakers, singers and musicians working for a wage.

"We even have a mention at a later date of a similar custom in connection with the cult in Jerusalem, where certain Levites, called me'oreim, 'AROUSERS,' sang (every morning?) this verse from "Ps 44:23: "Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever." The Talmud tells us that John Hyrcanus suppressed the practice because it recalled too readily a pagan custom." (Roland de Vaux, p. 247).
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me,
These are the true sayings of God. Rev 19:9And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God:

Proskuneo (g4352) pros-koo-neh'-o; from 4314 and a prob. der. of 2965 (mean. to kiss, like a dog licking his master's hand); to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (lit. or fig.) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore): - worship.
Those who are flaunting their body and talent are assuredly not involved in the worship of God but of their own human talent.
7. Jerusalem was the place where the pure Gospel Church was established; from whence the doctrine and discipline went out into all the world.
8. Matthew 28:90. "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded." "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me." 2 Thes. 3:6. "Now we command you brethren, in the name of our Lord," etc.
9. Chapter 33:14. [sic!] "If any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him."
10. The foundation of the true Church is found in Eph. 2:20. The apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ the corner stone. Compare Isaiah 9:7.
11. That Christ is the only head of the Church, can be plainly proved by Scripture and reason, Isaiah 9:6: "The government shall be upon his shoulder."
12. Ephesians 4:15. Grow up into him in all things which is the head, etc.; and Col. 1:18. And he is the head of the body, the Church. Compare Ephesians 5: Christ the head of the Church as the husband is the head of the wife.
13. Shall the Church have two heads, or the woman two husbands? Who will not fear to set himself head with the Lord?
14. That Jesus is the only law-giver, is evident from what hath been said, and what I will add. James, the apostle, saith: "Be ye doers of the word. Fulfill the royal law." Look into the perfect law of liberty. "We have one law-giver."
15. Let Paul speak: "Do we make void the law through faith? No, we establish the law." "We are under the law of Christ." What more do we wish?
Isaiah 29 Slogan
To the Preachers:
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: Isaiah 29:11
(Isn't that what the critics have said: God Incarnate taught the oral gospel but all of the written documents are law codes based upon the mininterpretation of apostles in conflict?)
To the elders:
And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. Isaiah 29:12
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me,Paul lined up ALL religious operatives as pagan or Jewish religionism which Jesus came to put down: salvation according to Peter includes being saved FROM this crooked generation. See more comments on First Corinthians where Paul always establishes the paganism which is destroyed.
and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Isaiah 29:13 (to the tune of a hickory stick or an oxgoad)Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder:
> for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
> and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. Isaiah 29:14
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 1 Cor 1:19Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?1Co.1:20
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God
by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Cor 1:21The law of common sense and silence says that God did not send out THEATRICAL PERFORMERS to save those who were pleased. God preaches only when the evangelist takes the gospel out as a herald.
Jesus said that people's worship is vain or empty if they "teach for doctrine the commands of men." Now, doesn't that demand that we listen to the commands of Jesus and those whom He as Spirit inspired? Is vain worship contrary to the Gospel (good news?). For this reason, Jesus spoke to the multitudes in parables to hide the truth from those who did not love the truth.
These people who preach a "core" gospel and ridicule the three forms God used to communicate His will (commands, examples, inferences) are talking behind God's back and talking against Him. And, lo, God explaines them by the example of the spiritual prostitute. Be aware that the Prophets were not legalists but they opposed the Priests who largely ignored the commands of God which were given for their own protection and never for their spiritual salvation:
Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls (just broke them down) and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, (grand meetings) every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezekiel 33:30- (The Lord, to them, was one of themselves pretending to be a prophet)
And they come unto thee as the people cometh,
and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them:for with their mouth they shew much love,
but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezekiel 33:31And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song (amourous love song)
of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument:
for they hear thy words, but they do them not. Ezekiel 33:32
See the parallelism? listen to words but don't do them because they aren't part of the "core." This parallels listeing to mouth religion exuding "loovveee."> The mouth worship is parallel to playing a musical instrument.
> The search for money or attendance is parallel to hearing the words but not doing them.Surely the removal of doctrine, speaking against God by claiming that the squabbling apostles were involved in their own interpretation and forming waring churches, the introduction of female musicians and singers clearly connected to temple-building and reputation-building is God at work:
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. Isaiah 29:14
Isaiah 58 Slogan
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him,
not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own
pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Isaiah 58:13Jeremiah Slogan
Jesus fired the "doctors of the law" and sent simple people out into the world with the Gospel. He knew that the doctors would be too concerned with "hermeneutics" and would just take away the key to knowledge. To keep the people from catching on, the doctors of the law concocted "bread and circus" type rituals and even turned the Feast of Tabernacles into a talent fair for book sellers, poets, musicians, and preachers. The "burden" of the clergy laded on the backs of the people was "spiritual anxiety created by religious ceremony." This sermon being reviewed says nothing about the "core gospel" but seeks to lade the people down with hatred of anyone who would question the use of instruments as the most powerful "burden" creator. But God is listen.
I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. Jeremiah 23: 25
How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Jeremiah 23: 26Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams, which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. Jeremiah 23: 27
- The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream;
- and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully.
- What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Jeremiah 23: 28
Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23: 29
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words every one from his neighbour. Jeremiah 23: 30 (giant Jubilee festivals?)
Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that use their tongues, and say, He saith. Jeremiah 23: 31
Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 23: 32
Jeremiah then prophesies about the burdens which the clergy will try to lade upon people.
Massa (h4853) mas-saw'; from 5375; a burden; spec. tribute, or (abstr.) porterage; fig. an utterance, chiefly a doom, espec. singing; mental, desire: - burden, carry away, prophecy, they set, song, tribute.
Nasa (h5375) naw-saw' to lift, burn, carry away, cast, contain, desire, ease, exact, exalt (self), extol, lade, lay, lift self up,
David's "praise" was similar:
Halal (h1984) haw-lal'; a prim. root; to be clear (orig. of sound, but usually of color); to shine; hence to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; causat. to celebrate; also to stultify: - (make) boast (self), celebrate, commend, (deal, make), fool (- ish, -ly), glory, give [light], be (make, feign self) mad, give in marriage, [sing, be worthy of] praise, rage, renowned, shine.
The king of Tyre who came equipped with musical instruments burdened people often by the use of the King who is identified as a prostitute as Lucifer (light, shine) was gender-confused:
THE burden (song) of Tyre. Howl (unnatural tone), ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them. Is.23:1
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, the span of a king's life. But at the end of these seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute: Is.23:15
The "song of the prostitute" is:
"Take up a harp, walk through the city, O prostitute forgotten; play the harp well, sing many a song, so that you will be remembered." Is.23:16
Jeremiah continues to prophesy of those just laying burdens on people by deliberately dividing them from their non-instrumental families:
Look again and hear Ezekiel's parallel and see that the burden was the musical prostitutes:
Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls (just broke them down) and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, (grand meetings) every one to his brother,
- saying, Come, I pray you, and hear
what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezekiel 33:30- And they come unto thee as the people cometh,
- and they sit before thee as my people,
- and they hear thy words,
- but they will not do them:
- for with their mouth they shew much love,
- but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezekiel 33:31
- And, lo, thou art unto them
- as a very lovely song (amourous love song)
- of one that hath a pleasant voice,
- and can play well on an instrument:
- for they hear thy words,
- but they do them not. Ezekiel 33:32
Now, look at Jeremiah speaking of the same "seekers" who will no longer be tolerated:
And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the Lord? thou shalt then say unto them,
What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 23: 33
- And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say,
- The burden (song) of the Lord,
- I will even punish that man and his house. Jeremiah 23: 34
- Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour,
- and every one to his brother,
- What hath the Lord answered? and,
- What hath the Lord spoken? Jeremiah 23: 35
And the burden of the Lord shall ye mention no more;
for every mans word shall be his burden (song):
for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the Lord of hosts our God. Jeremiah 23:36A burden is:
Massa (h4853) mas-saw'; from 5375; a burden; spec. tribute, or (abstr.) porterage; fig. an utterance, chiefly a doom, espec. singing; mental, desire: - burden, carry away, prophecy, * they set, song, tribute.
- Also, thou son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters, Eze.24:25
- THE burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. Zech 12:1
- Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. Zech 12:2
- And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. Zech 12:3
We believe that this shows that the false prophets, were replacing the Words of God with musical performance right out of the "places." The comparison shows that music and perverting the Word are the same thing because they appeal to people who just don't care what God says beyond His little, allowable core.

The Christian result was that the wineskin performers were not allowed but were replaced by non-performers speaking the Words of Christ one to another.
To deny that God Incarnate has any words beyond those spoken to the first people as the "gospel" is to pervert the words of the living God: Jesus is still living and is the Spirit in His Word.
In habbakuk 2:19-20 the people tried to get their idols (often musical devices) to speak to them. However, the prophet said: "But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him." You see, that passage and 1 Corinthians 14 includes women as well as men who are not inspired! See more below about the harp from which the people of Ur got their message from the gods.
This is why Jesus fired the clergy who are still fully occupied in laying burdens on people -- such as mentally conditioning them to see the non-use of instruments in worship and trying to warn people as guilty of every word one can possibly garner in one Phd quest.
The honest evangelist will be faithful to the Word.
The Hebrews Slogan
THEREFORE we ought to give the more earnest heed (honor or worship) to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. Hebrews 2:1
For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; Hebrews 2:2
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; Hebrews 2:3
God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will (pattern)? Hebrews 2:4
The Peter Slogan
And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Peter 1:18
And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 2 Peter 1:19
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2 Peter 1:20
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21
As Jesus fired the "doctors of the Law" for taking away the key to knowledge, Peter warned preachers or "mediators" for all times that they have no right to explicate or applicate the inspired Words of the Spirit of Christ (1 Pet 1:11) without endangering their own souls and the souls of the church for which Christ died. Private interpretation is really contemporary preaching:
Epilusis (g1955)ep-il'-oo-sis; from 1956; explanation, i.e. application: - interpretation.
Epiluo (g1956) ep-ee-loo'-o; from 1909 and 3089; to solve further, i.e. (fig.) to explain, decide: - determine, expound.
That means that no book writer, preacher or presumed prophet can add one bit to the free Word (Isaiah 55:1f). How then is the Word to be used. Well remember the context:
So, we have commands, examples and inferences from God and we have anyone who would assign it to just the interpretation of waring apostles is in trouble.
The Epistle of Ignatius to the Ephesians: also called Ignatius Theophoros (Greek: "God Bearer") bishop of Antioch, Syria, born in Syria, around the year 50; died at Rome between 98 and 117. Ignatius introduced the practice of alternating sections of the church chanting the Word. Ignatius d. c 110
Chapter IX.-Ye Have Given No Heed to False Teachers.
Nevertheless, I have heard of some who have passed on from this to you, having false doctrine, whom ye did not suffer to sow among you, but stopped your ears, that ye might not receive those things which were sown by them, as being stones 58 of the temple of the Father, prepared for the building of God the Father, and drawn up on high by the instrument of Jesus Christ, which is the cross, 59 making use of the Holy Spirit as a rope, while your faith was the means by which you ascended, and your love the way which led up to God.
Nevertheless, I have heard of some who have passed in among you, holding the wicked doctrine of the strange and evil spirit; to whom ye did not allow entrance to sow their tares, but stopped your ears that ye might not receive that error which was proclaimed by them,Ye, therefore, as well as all your fellow-travellers, are God-bearers, temple-bearers, Christ-bearers, bearers of holiness, adorned in all respects with the commandments of Jesus Christ, in whom also I exult that I have been thought worthy, by means of this Epistle, to converse and rejoice with you, because with respect to your Christian life ye love nothing but God only.
as being persuaded that that spirit which deceives the people does not speak the things of Christ,
but his own, for he is a lying spirit.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.
He was a murderer from the beginning,
and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
for he is a liar, and the father of it. Jn. 8:44
Now, Jesus did not say THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UP THY SONGS AND SERMONS: He just said "for he is a liar and the father of it." Now that sounds pretty LOUD to me.
NOW DON'T WE WONDER WHY PEOPLE GIVE THEMSELVES THE RIGHT THAT NEITHER CHRIST NOR HIS SPIRIT HAD A RIGHT TO?But the Holy Spirit does not speak His own things, but those of Christ, and that not from himself, but from the Lord; even as the Lord also announced to us the things that He received from the Father.
For, says He, "the word which ye hear is not Mine, but the Father's, who sent Me.
And says He of the Holy Spirit, "He shall not speak of Himself, but whatsoever things He shall hear from Me."And He says of Himself to the Father, "I have," says He, "glorified Thee upon the earth; I have finished the work which, Thou gavest Me; I have manifested Thy name to men." And of the Holy Ghost, "He shall glorify Me, for He receives of Mine."
But the spirit of deceit preaches himself, and speaks his own things, for he seeks to please himself. He glorifies himself, for he is full of arrogance.
He is lying, fraudulent, soothing, flattering, treacherous, rhapsodical, trifling, inharmonious, verbose, sordid, and timorous.
From his power Jesus Christ will deliver you, who has founded you upon the rock, as being chosen stones, well fitted for the divine edifice of the Father, and who are raised up on high by Christ, who was crucified for you, making use of the Holy Spirit as a rope, and being borne up by faith, while exalted by love from earth to heaven, walking in company with those that are undefiled.
For, says [the Scripture], "Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord." Now the way is unerring, namely, Jesus Christ. For, says He, "I am the way and the life." And this way leads to the Father.
For "no man," says He, "cometh to the Father but by Me." Blessed, then, are ye who are God-bearers, spirit-bearers, temple-bearers, bearers of holiness, adorned in all respects with the commandments of Jesus Christ, being "a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people," on whose account I rejoice exceedingly, and have had the privilege, by this Epistle, of conversing with "the saints which are at Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus." I rejoice, therefore, over you, that ye do not give heed to vanity, and love nothing according to the flesh, but according to God.
Chapter XV.-Exhortation to Confess Christ by Silence as Well as Speech.
It is better for a man to be silent and be [a Christian], than to talk and not to be one. It is good to teach, if he who speaks also acts.
There is then one Teacher, who spake and it was done; while even those things which He did in silence are worthy of the Father. He who possesses the word of Jesus, is truly able to hear even His very silence, that he may be perfect, and may both act as he speaks, and be recognised by his silence. There is nothing which is hid from God, but our very secrets are near to Him.
Let us therefore do all things as those who have Him dwelling in us, that we may be His temples, and He may be in us as our God, which indeed He is, and will manifest Himself before our faces. Wherefore we justly love Him.
It is better for a man to be silent and be [a Christian], than to talk and not to be one. "The kingdom of God is not in word, but in power." Men "believe with the heart, and confess with the mouth," the one "unto righteousness," the other "unto salvation." It is good to teach, if he who speaks also acts. For he who shall both "do and teach, the same shall be great in the kingdom." Our Lord and God, Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, first did and then taught, as Luke testifies, "whose praise is in the Gospel through all the Churches." There is nothing which is hid from the Lord, but our very secrets are near to Him. Let us therefore do all things as those who have Him dwelling in us, that we may be His temples, and He may be in us as God.
Let Christ speak in us, even as He did in Paul.
Let the Holy Spirit teach us to speak the things of Christ in like manner as He did.27. This is not the place to examine all our traducers, who they are, or whence they are, what is their power, what their knowledge, why they tremble at the mention of Christ, why they regard his disciples as enemies and as hateful persons; but with regard to ourselves to state expressly to those who will exercise common reason, in terms applicable to all of us alike,-We Christians are nothing else than worshippers of the Supreme King and Head, under our Master, Christ.
If you examine carefully, you will find that nothing else is implied in that religion. This is the sum of all that we do; this is the proposed end and limit of sacred duties.
Before Him we all prostrate ourselves, according to our custom ; Him we adore in joint prayers ; from Him we beg things just and honourable, and worthy of His ear.
Not that He needs our supplications, or loves to see the homage of so many thousands laid at His feet.
This is our benefit, and has a regard to our advantage. For since we are prone to err, and to yield to various lusts and appetites through the fault of our innate weakness,
He allows Himself at all times to be comprehended in our thoughts, that whilst we entreat Him and strive to merit His bounties,we may receive a desire for purity, and may free ourselves from every stain by the removal of all our shortcomings. 31. O greatest, O Supreme Creator of things invisible! O Thou who art Thyself unseen, and who art incomprehensible! Thou art worthy, Thou art verily worthy-if only mortal tongue may speak of Thee-that all breathing and intelligent nature should never cease to feel and to return thanks;that it should throughout the whole of life fall on bended knee, and offer supplication with never-ceasing prayers. For Thou art the first cause; in Thee created things exist, and Thou art the space in which rest the foundations of all things, whatever they be. Thou art illimitable, unbegotten, immortal, enduring for aye,
God Thyself alone, whom no bodily shape may represent, no outline delineate; of virtues inexpressible, of greatness indefinable; unrestricted as to locality, movement, and condition, concerning whom nothing can be clearly expressed by the significance of man's words.
That Thou mayest be understood,
we must be silent ;
and that erring conjecture may track Thee through the shady cloud,
no word must be uttered.
And therefore Christ the divine,-although you are unwilling to allow it,-Christ the divine, I repeat, for this must be said often, that the ears of unbelievers may burst and be rent asunder,
speaking in the form of man by command of the Supreme God, because He knew that men are naturally [that the nature of man is] blind, and cannot grasp the truth at all, or regard as sure and certain what they might have persuaded themselves as to things set before their eyes, and do not hesitate, for the sake of their conjectures,
to raise and bring up questions that cause much strife,-bade us abandon and disregard all these things of which you speak, and not waste our thoughts upon things which have been removed far from our knowledge,
but, as much as possible, seek the Lord of the universe with the whole mind and spirit; be raised above these subjects, and give over to Him our hearts, as yet hesitating whither to turn; [transfer to Him the undecided conversions of the breast] be ever mindful of Him; and although no imagination can set Him forth as He is, [He can be formed by no imagination] yet form some faint conception of Him.
For Christ said that, of all who are comprehended in the vague notion of what is sacred and divine, 424 He alone is beyond the reach of doubt, alone true, and one about whom only a raving and reckless madman can be in doubt; to know whom is enough, although you have learned nothing besides; and if by knowledge you have indeed been related to[ [and being fixed on] God, the head of the world, you have gained the true and most important knowledge.
424 Lit., "which the obscurity of sacred divinity contains;" which Orelli interprets, "the most exalted being holds concealed from mortals."
Deut. 29:29 The secret things belong unto Jehovah our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Chapter XXXII.-The Doctrine of the Christians, is Opposed to Dissensions, and Fitted for All.
But with us there is no desire of vainglory, nor do we indulge in a variety of opinions.
For having renounced the popular and earthly,
and obeying the commands of God,
and following the law of the Father of immortality,
we reject everything which rests upon human opinion. Not only do the rich among us pursue our philosophy,
but the poor enjoy instruction gratuitously,
( [Compare cap. xi. p. 69. And note, thus early, the Christian freeschools, such as Julian closed and then imitated, confessing their power.])for the things which come from God surpass the requital of worldly gifts.
Thus we admit all who desire to hear, even old women and striplings; and, in short, persons of every age are treated by us with respect, but every kind of licentiousness is kept at a distance.
And in speaking we do not utter falsehood. It would be an excellent thing if your continuance in unbelief should receive a check;
but, however that may be, let our cause remain confirmed by the judgment pronounced by God.Laugh, if you please; but you will have to weep hereafter. Is it not absurd that Nestor, who was slow at cutting his horses' reins owing to his weak and sluggish old age, is, according to you, to be admired for attempting to rival the young men in fighting, while you deride those among us who struggle against old age and occupy themselves with the things pertaining to God?
Who would not laugh when you tell us that the Amazons, and Semiramis, and certain other warlike women existed, while you cast reproaches on our maidens? Achilles was a youth, yet is believed to have been very magnanimous; and Neoptolemus was younger, but strong; Philoctetes was weak, but the divinity had need of him against Troy. What sort of man was Thersites? yet he held a command in the army, and, if he had not through doltishness had such an unbridled tongue, he would not have been reproached for being peak-headed and bald.
As for those who wish to learn our philosophy, we do not test them by their looks,
nor do we judge of those who come to us by their outward appearance; for we argue that there may be strength of mind in all, though they may be weak in body. But your proceedings are full of envy and abundant stupidity.

Clement Pedegogue 1: Vol III Commands, Examples and Inferences Chapter 3
But what is loveable, and is not also loved by Him? And man has been proved to be loveable; consequently man is loved by God. For how shall he not be loved for whose sake the only-begotten Son is sent from the Father's bosom, the Word of faith, the faith which is superabundant; the Lord Himself distinctly confessing and saying, "For the Father Himself loveth you, because ye have loved Me; " and again, "And hast loved them as Thou hast loved Me? "
What, then, the Master desires and declares, and how He is disposed in deed and word,
how He commands what is to be done, and forbids the opposite, has already been shown.Plainly, then, the other kind of discourse, the didactic, is powerful and spiritual, observing precision, occupied in the contemplation of mysteries.
But let it stand over for the present.
Now, it is incumbent on us to return His love, who lovingly guides us to that life which is best;and to live in accordance with the injunctions of His will, not only fulfilling what is commanded,
or guarding against what is forbidden, but turning away from some examples, and imitating others as much as we can, and thus to perform the works of the Master according to His similitude,
and so fulfil what Scripture says as to our being made in His image and likeness.
For, wandering in life as in deep darkness, we need a guide that cannot stumble or stray; and our guide is the best, not blind, as the Scripture says, "leading the blind into pits."
But the Word is keen-sighted, and scans the recesses of the heart. As, then, that is not light which enlightens not, nor motion that moves not, nor loving which loves not, so neither is that good which profits not, nor guides to salvation.
Let us then aim at the fulfilment of the commandments by the works of the Lord; for the Word Himself also, having openly become flesh, exhibited the same virtue, both practical and contemplative.
Wherefore let us regard the Word as law, and His commands and counsels as the short and straight paths to immortality; for His precepts are full of persuasion, not of fear.
And there are three departments of counsel:
That which takes examples from past times;
as what the Hebrews suffered when they worshipped the golden calf, and what they suffered when they committed fornication, and the like.
The second, whose meaning is understood from the present times, as being apprehended by perception;
as it was said to those who asked the Lord, "If He was the Christ, or shall we wait for another? Go and tell John, the blind receive their sight, the deaf hear, the lepers are cle [Matt. xi. 3-6; Luke vii. 19, 22, 23.]
Such was that which David aid when he prophesied, "As we have heard, so have we seen." [ Ps. xlviii. 8.]And the third department of counsel consists of what is future,
by which we are bidden guard against what is to happen; as also that was said, "They that fall into sins shall be cast into outer darkness, where there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth," [Matt. xxii. 13, xxv. 30.] and the like. So that from these things it is clear that the Lord, going the round of all the methods of curative treatment, calls humanity to salvation.
Tertullian of Carthage (Quintus Septimius Florens Terullianus, b. 155 - 160 Carthage - d. 220? AD)
He specificially uses exclusion or necessary inference to repudiate music.
"Fortified by this knowledge against heathen views, let us rather turn to the unworthy reasonings of our own people; for the faith of some, either too simple or too scrupulous,
demands direct authority from Scripture for giving up the shows,
and holds out that the matter is a doubtful one, because such abstinence is not clearly and in words imposed upon God's servants."Well, we never find it expressed with the same precision,
"Thou shalt not enter circus or theatre, thou shalt not look on combat or show; "
as it is plainly laid down, "Thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not worship an idol; thou shalt not commit adultery or fraud." Ex. xx. 14."But we find that that first word of David bears on this very sort of thing: "Blessed," he says, "is the man who has not gone into the assembly of the impious, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of scorners." Ps. i. 1.
Though he seems to have predicted beforehand of that just man, that he took no part in the meetings and deliberations of the Jews, taking counsel about the slaying of our Lord,
yet divine Scripture has ever far-reaching applications:
after the immediate sense has been exhausted, in all directions it fortifies the practice of the religious life, so that here also you have an utterance which is not far from a plain interdicting of the shows. Tertullian, De Spectaculis"Tertullian, with his characteristic energy, takes up the same argument in his famous work "On Prescription Against Heretics". His general process of reasoning runs thus: Christ chose twelve Apostles to whom he communicated His doctrine. The Apostles preached this doctrine to the churches they founded, and thence the same doctrine came to the more recent churches. Neither did the Apostles corrupt Christ's doctrine, nor have the Apostolic Churches corrupted the preaching of the Apostles. Heresy is always posterior, and, therefore, erroneous.
"We have to show," he says (c. xxi), "whether our doctrine . . . is derived from Apostolic teaching, and whether, therefore, other doctrines have their origin in a lie.
We are in communion with the Apostolic Churches, because we have the same doctrine; that is the testimony of the truth (Communicamus cum Ecclesiis apostolicis, quod nulla doctrina diversa; hoc est testimonium veritatis).
In Tertullian's writings against Marcion (IV, v) we find an application of this apologetic argument. Having developed the historical argument founded on the preservation, as a matter of fact, of the Apostolic doctrine in the chief Apostolic Churches, we must add that, besides it, such writers as Irenaeus and others used often also a dogmatic argument founded on the necessary preservation of Christian truth in the whole Church and in the Roman Church in particular. The two arguments are to be carefully distinguished. Apostolic Churches
Those who OPPOSE THE WORD but still ride on the backs of working people and widows have NO RESPONSE but their own SELF-REFERENCE. Or, as the ultimate emotional violence, they think that he will stop if they CLAIM that the Holy Spirit (Jesus) tells them that PAUL WAS A LIAR and He has given "them" an AUDIBLE replacement for the OLDEN Bible. But, the HOLY SPIRIT was unable to preserve and test EACH DOCTRINE by the CONTEMPORARY CULTURE and find that the Bible says the same thing to ALL CULTURES. Those who HAZE the mirror by speaking of church pews assuredly cannot bring the nose of their brain face to face with the Mind of Christ, the Holy Spirit.
We, in our RACA minds, continue to refute the lie that non-instrumental churches of Christ INVENTED the notion of commands, examples and inferences "out of the mind of southern, red-necked" culture. A NEW HERMENEUTIC built on a lie will die on a lie:
Cyprian of Carthage on THE SHOWS speaking to much church "worship."

2. Believers, and men who claim for themselves the authority of the Christian name, are not ashamed-are not, I repeat, ashamed to find a defence in the heavenly Scriptures for the vain superstitions associated with the public exhibitions of the heathens,
and thus to attribute divine authority to idolatry.
For how is it, that what is done by the heathens in honour of any idol is resorted to in a public show by faithful Christians, and the heathen idolatry is maintained, and the true and divine religion is trampled upon in contempt of God? Shame binds me to relate their pretexts and defences in this behalf.
"Where," say they, "are there such Scriptures? where are these things prohibited? On the contrary, both Elias is the charioteer of Israel, and David himself danced before the ark.
We read of psalteries, horns, 6 trumpets, drums, pipes, harps, and choral dances. Moreover, the apostle, in his struggle, puts before us the contest of the Caestus, and of our wrestle against the spiritual things of wickedness.
Again, when he borrows his illustrations from the racecourse, he also proposes the prize of the crown. Why, then, may not a faithful Christian man gaze upon that which the divine pen might write about? "At this point I might not unreasonably say that it would have been far better for them not to know any writings at all, than thus to read the Scriptures. 7
For words and illustrations
which are recorded by way of exhortation to evangelical virtue, are translated by them into pleas for vice; because those things are written of, not that they should be gazed upon, but that a greater eagerness might be aroused in our minds in respect of things that will benefit us, seeing that among the heathens there is manifest so much eagerness in respect of things which will be of no advantage.3. These are therefore an argument to stimulate virtue, not a permission or a liberty to look upon heathen error, that by this consideration the mind may be more inflamed to Gospel virtue for the sake of the divine rewards, since through the suffering of all these labours and pains it is granted to attain to eternal benefits.
For that Elias is the charioteer of Israel is no defence for gazing upon the public games; for he ran his race in no circus. And that David in the presence of God led the dances, is no sanction for faithful Christians to occupy seats in the public theatre; for David did not twist his limbs about in obscene movements, to represent in his dancing the story of Grecian lust. Psalteries, horns, pipes, drums, harps, were used in the service of the Lord, and not of idols.David was moving the Ark of the Covenant with frequent stops to offer animal sacrifices. This was in mortal fear that something wrong would happen. David was the KING and it was not uncommon for the king to participate in rituals. However, he was not a priest and was not leading the public worship of the people.
Let it not on this account be objected that unlawful things may be gazed upon; for by the artifice of the devil these are changed from things holy to things unlawful. Then let shame demur to these things, even if the Holy Scriptures cannot. For there are certain things wherein the Scripture is more careful in giving instruction.
Acquiescing in the claim of modesty,
it has forbidden more where it has been silent.
The truth, if it descended low enough to deal with such things,
would think very badly of its faithful votaries.[God does not think that we are FOOLS]
For very often, in matters of precept, some things are advantageously said nothing about;
they often remind when they are expressly forbidden.
So also there is an implied silence even in the writings of the Scripture;
and severity speaks in the place of precepts;
and reason teaches where Scripture has held its peace.Let every man only take counsel with himself, and let him speak consistently with the character of his profession, and then he will never do any of these things. For that conscience will have more weight which shall be indebted to none other than itself.
4. What has Scripture interdicted? Certainly it has forbidden gazing upon what it forbids to be done. It condemned, I say, all those kinds of exhibitions when it abrogated idolatry-the mother of all public amusements, whence these prodigies of vanity and lightness came.
For what public exhibition is without an idol? what amusement without a sacrifice? what contest is not consecrated to some dead person?
3. For there are certain things wherein the Scripture is more careful in giving instruction.
Acquiescing in the claim of modesty,
it has forbidden more where it has been silent.
The truth, if it descended low enough to deal with such things, would think very badly of its faithful votaries.For very often, in matters of precept, some things are advantageously said nothing about;
they often remind when they are expressly forbidden.
So also there is an implied silence even in the writings of the Scripture;
and severity speaks in the place of precepts;and reason teaches where Scripture has held its peace.Those Grecian contests, whether in poems, or in instrumental music, or in words, or in personal prowess, have as their guardians various demons;
and whatever else there is which either attracts the eyes or allures the ears of the spectators,
if it be investigated in reference to its origin and institution, presents as its reason either an idol, or a demon, or a dead man. Thus the devil, who is their original contriver, because he knew that naked idolatry would by itself excite repugnance,
associated it with public exhibitions, that for the sake of their attraction it might be loved.I have the Bible and 3 dozen ancient documents which GIVES CREDIT to Satan for being the original contriver of entertainment "worship" especially MUSIC.
Those who call that DEMENTED have only their own sound-byte mind to boast their whiney piney hearts.
It is not lawful, I say, for faithful Christians to be present; it is not lawful, I say, at all, even for those whom for the delight of their ears Greece sends everywhere to all who are instructed in her vain arts. One imitates the hoarse warlike clangours of the trumpet; another with his breath blowing into a pipe regulates its mournful sounds; another with dances,
and with the musical voice of a man, strives with his breath, which by an effort he had drawn from his bowels into the upper parts of his body, to play upon the stops of pipes; now letting forth the sound, and now closing it up inside, and forcing it into the air by certain openings of the stops;
now breaking the sound in measure, he endeavours to speak with his fingers, ungrateful to the Artificer who gave him a tongue. Why should I speak of comic and useless efforts? Why of those great tragic vocal ravings?
Why of strings set vibrating with noise? These things, even if they were not dedicated to idols, ought not to be approached and gazed upon by faithful Christians; because, even if they were not criminal, they are characterized by a worthlessness which is extreme, and which is little suited to believers.
10. Let the faithful Christian, I say, devote himself to the sacred Scriptures, and there he shall find worthy exhibitions for his faith.

Augustine of Hippo (354-430)Letter LV. or Book II. of Replies to Questions of Januarius. (a.d. 400.)
While God gave the Sabbath as a day of rest to keep people away from the pagan sabbaths, and made it every seventh day, he deliberately called Israel away from astrology which governed and still governs some in the observance of says and seasons.
12. We are therefore bound to denounce with abhorrence and contempt the ravings of the astrologers (music from the music of the spheres), who, when we find fault with the empty inventions by which they cast other men down into the delusions where into they themselves have fallen, imagine that they answer well when they say, "Why, then, do you regulate the time of the observance of Easter by calculation of the positions of the sun and moon?"
as if that with which we find fault was the arrangements of the heavenly bodies, or the succession of the seasons, which are appointed by God in His infinite power and goodness,
and not their perversity in abusing, for the support of the most absurd opinions,
those things which God has ordered in perfect wisdom. If the astrologer may on this ground forbid us from drawing comparisons from the heavenly bodies
for the mystical representation of sacramental realities,
then the augurs may with equal reason prevent the use of these words of Scripture, "Be harmless as doves;" and the snake-charmers may forbid that other exhortation, "Be wise as serpents; "while the play-actors may interfere with our mentioning the harp in the book of Psalms.
Let them therefore say, if they please, that,
because similitudes for the exhibition of the mysteries of God's word are taken from the things which I have named,
we are chargeable either with consulting the omens given by the flight of birds, or with concocting the poisons of the charmer,
or with taking pleasure in the excesses of the theatre,-a statement which would be the clime of absurdity.XVIII: 34. I am surprised at your expressing a desire that I should write anything in regard to those ceremonies which are found different in different countries, because there is no necessity for my doing this; and, moreover,
one most excellent rule must be observed in regard to these customs,
when they do not in any way oppose either true doctrine or sound morality,
but contain some incentives to the better life, viz., that wherever we see them observed, or know them to be established, we should not only refrain from finding fault with them, but even recommend them by our approval and imitation,
unless restrained by fear of doing greater harm than goodby this course, through the infirmity of others. We are not, however, to be restrained by this,
if more good is to be expected from our consenting with those who are zealous for the ceremony, than loss to be feared from our displeasing those who protest against it.In such a case we ought by all means to adopt it,
especially if it be something in defence of which Scripture can be alleged:
as in the singing of hymns and psalms,
for which we have on record both the example and the precepts of the Lord and of His apostles. In this religious exercise, so usefl for inducing a devotional frame of mind and inflaming the strength of love to God, there is diversity of usage,
and in Africa the members of the Church are rather too indifferent in regard to it; on which account the Donstists reproach
us with our grave chanting of the divine songs of the prophets in our churches,
while they inflame their passions in their revels by the singing of psalms of human composition,
which rouse them like the stirring notes of the trumpet on the battle-field.(In the assembly) But when brethren are assembled in the church, why should not the time be devoted to singing of sacred songs, excepting of course while reading or preaching is going on, or while the presiding minister prays aloud, or the united prayer of the congregation is led by the deacon's voice?
(outside the assembly) At the other intervals not thus occupied, I do not see what could be a more excellent, useful, and holy exercise for a Christian congregation.

OF TAKING THE DIVINE NAME FOR THE PURPOSE OF INVOKING IT BY MEANS OF PRAISE
Aquinas poses objections to audible "singing" when everyone knew that Paul never commanded singing orpraising but teaching:
Objection 1: It would seem that God should not be praised with song. For the Apostle says (Col. 3:16): "Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual canticles."
Now we should employ nothing in the divine worship,
save what is delivered to us on the authority of Scripture.
Therefore it would seem that, in praising God, we should employ, not corporal but spiritual canticles.Reply to Objection 1: The name of spiritual canticle may be given not only to those that are sung inwardly in spirit, but also to those that are sung outwardly with the lips, inasmuch as such like canticles arouse spiritual devotion.
Objection 2: Further, Jerome in his commentary on Eph. 5:19, "Singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord," says: "Listen, young men whose duty it is to recite the office in church: God is to be sung not with the voice but with the heart. Nor should you, like play-actors, ease your throat and jaws with medicaments, and make the church resound with theatrical measures and airs." Therefore God should not be praised with song.
Reply to Objection 2: Jerome does not absolutely condemn singing, but reproves those who sing theatrically in church not in order to arouse devotion, but in order to show off, or to provoke pleasure. Hence Augustine says (Confess. x, 33):
"When it befalls me to be more moved by the voice than by the words sung, I confess to have sinned penally, and then had rather not hear the singer."
Objection 4: Further, in the Old Law God was praised with musical instruments and human song, according to Ps. 32:2,3: "Give praise to the Lord on the harp, sing to Him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings. Sing to Him a new canticle." But the Church does not make use of musical instruments such as harps and psalteries, in the divine praises, for fear of seeming to imitate the Jews. Therefore in like manner neither should song be used in the divine praises.
Reply to Objection 4: As the Philosopher says (Polit. viii, 6), "Teaching should not be accompanied with a flute or any artificial instrument such as the harp or anything else of this kind: but only with such things as make good hearers."
For such like musical instruments move the soul to pleasure rather than create a good disposition within it. In the Old Testament instruments of this description were employed, both because the people were more coarse and carnal---so that they needed to be aroused by such instruments as also by earthly promises---and because these material instruments were figures of something else.
Erasmus 1469-1536 was a Catholic who opposed the professional clergy along with instruments before the Campbells who also opposed both:
"We have brought into our churches certain operatic and theatrical music; such a confused, disorderly chattering of some words as I hardly think was ever in any of the Grecian or Roman theatres. The church rings with the noise of trumpets, pipes, and dulcimers; and human voices strive to bear their part with them. Men run to church as to a theatre, to have their ears tickled." -- Erasmus, Commentary on I Cor. 14:19

8. These words are blows and thrusts for the false apostles [PAGE 227] and preachers. Paul is mortal enemy to the blockheads who make great boast,
pretending to what they do not possess and to what they cannot do;
who boast of having the Spirit in great measure; who are ready to counsel and aid the whole world;
who pride themselves on the ability to invent something new.
It is to be a surpassingly precious and heavenly thing they are to spin out of their heads,
as the dreams of pope and monks have been in time past."We do not so," says Paul. "We rely not upon ourselves or our wisdom and ability. We preach not what we have ourselves invented. But this is our boast and trust in Christ before God,
that we have made of you a divine epistle; have written upon your hearts, not our thoughts, but the Word of God.
We are not, however, glorifying our own power, but the works and the power of him who has called and equipped us for such an office; from whom proceeds all you have heard and believed.
9. It is a glory which every preacher may claim, to be able to say with full confidence of heart:
"This trust have I toward God in Christ, that what I teach and preach is truly the Word of God."
Likewise, when he performs other official duties in the Church--baptizes a child, absolves and comforts a sinner--it must be done in the same firm conviction that such is the command of Christ.16. Now, Paul's thought here is that nothing should be taught and practiced in the Church
but what is unquestionably God's Word.
It will not do to introduce or perform anything whatever
upon the strength of man's judgment. Man's achievements,
man's reasoning and power, are of no avail save in so far as they come from God.As Peter says in his first epistle (ch. 4:11): "If any man speaketh, speaking as it were oracles of God; if any man ministereth, ministering as of the strength which God supplieth."
In short, let him who would be wise, who would boast of great skill, talents and power, confine himself to things other than spiritual;
with respect to spiritual matters, let him keep his place and [PAGE 230] refrain from boasting and pretense. For it is of no moment that men observe your greatness and ability; the important thing is that poor souls may rest assured of being presented with God's Word and works, whereby they may be saved.
"Who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."

Warning about "predestination" Institutes 3-31: For Scripture is the school of the Holy Spirit, in which as nothing useful and necessary to be known has been omitted, so nothing is taught but what it is of importance to know.
Let us, I say, allow the Christian to unlock his mind and ears to all the words of God which are addressed to him, provided he do it with this moderation,
viz., that whenever the Lord shuts his sacred mouth, he also desists from inquiry. In The Necessity of Reforming the Church (1543) Calvin wrote:
The best rule of sobriety is, not only in learning to follow wherever God leads,
but also when he makes an end of teaching, to cease also from wishing to be wise. The danger which they dread is not so great that we ought on account of it to turn away our minds from the oracles of God.There is a celebrated saying of Solomon, "It is the glory of God to conceal a thing," (Prov. 25: 2.) But since both piety and common sense dictate that this is not to be understood of every thing, we must look for a distinction, lest under the pretence of modesty and sobriety we be satisfied with a brutish ignorance.
This is clearly expressed by Moses in a few words, "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us, and to our children for ever," (Deut. 29: 29.)
We see how he exhorts the people to study the doctrine of the law in accordance with a heavenly decree,
because God has been pleased to promulgate it, while he at the same time confines them within these boundaries, for the simple reason that it is not lawful for men to pry into the secret things of God.
"In inveighing against ceremonies themselves, and also in abrogating a great part of them, we confess that there is some difference between us and the prophets.
They inveighed against their countrymen for confining the worship of God to external ceremonies, but still ceremonies which God himself had instituted;
we complain that the same honor is paid to frivolities of man's devising. They, while condemning superstition, left untouched a multitude of ceremonies
which God had enjoined, and which were useful and appropriate to an age of tutelage;
our business has been to correct numerous rites which had either crept in through oversight,
or been turned to abuse and which, moreover, by no means accorded with the time. For, if we would not throw everything into confusion,
we must never lose sight of the distinction between the old and the new dispensations, and of the fact that ceremonies, the observance of which was useful under the law,
are now not only superfluous, but vicious and absurd.
But in regard to the former, it is plain that
they are destitute of authority from the scriptures,
as well as of any approved example of such intercession; while, as to the latter,Paul declares that none can invoke God, save those who have been taught by his word to pray. On this depends the confidence with which it becomes pious minds to be actuated and imbued when they engage in prayer.
But is it not altogether at variance with reason that the ploughing oxen should starve, and the lazy asses be fed? They will say, however, that they serve at the altar. I answer, that the priests under the law deserved maintenance, by ministering at an altar;
but that, as Paul declares, the case under the New Testament is different.
And what are those altar services, for which they allege that maintenance is due to them? Forsooth, that they may perform their masses and chant in churches, for example,
partly labor to no purpose,
and partly perpetrate sacrilege, thereby provoking the anger of God.
See for what it is that they are alimented at the public expense!Westminster Confession of Faith CHAPTER XXI
Of Religious Worship, and the Sabbath Day
I. The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all, is good, and doth good unto all, and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might.
But the acceptable way of worshiping the true God is instituted by himself,
and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshiped according to the imaginations and devices of men,
or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation,
or any other way not prescribed in the Holy Scripture. And Zwingli wanted to get rid of:
"traditional forms or ceremonies (added) simply on the ground that they were not actually forbidden by Scripture
Zwingli began his duties in Zurich on his thirty-sixth birthday (Jan. 1, 1519) by a sermon on the genealogy of Christ, and announced that on the next day (which was a Sunday) he would begin a series of expository discourses on the first Gospel. From Matthew he proceeded to the Acts, the Pauline and Catholic Epistles; so that in four years he completed the homiletical exposition of the whole New Testament except the Apocalypse (which he did not regard as an apostolic book).
He made it his chief object "to preach Christ from the fountain," and "to insert the pure Christ into the hearts. He would preach nothing but what he could prove from the Scriptures, as the only rule of Christian faith and practice.
This is a reformatory idea; for the aim of the Reformation was to reopen the fountain of the New Testament to the whole people, and to renew the life of the Church by the power of the primitive gospel.
By his method of preaching on entire books he could give his congregation a more complete idea of the life of Christ and the way of salvation than by confining himself to detached sections. He did not at first attack the Roman Church, but only the sins of the human heart; he refuted errors by the statement of truth.
Christians are not bound to any works which Christ has not commanded. They may eat at all times all kinds of food.
Even the organs were removed, and the Latin singing of the choir abolished, but fortunately afterwards replaced by congregational singing of psalms and hymns in the vernacular (in Basle as early as 1526, in St. Gall 1527, in Zurich in 1598). "Within thirteen days," says Bullinger, "all the churches of the city were cleared; costly works of painting and sculpture, especially a beautiful table in the Waterchurch, were destroyed. The superstitious lamented; but the true believers rejoiced in it as a great and joyous worship of God."
He "commanded the preachers of the canton to teach the Word of God, and to be silent about the traditions of men (1520).
They took an active part in the early stages of the Reformation, prematurely broke the fasts, and stood in the front rank of the image-stormers. They went ahead of public opinion and the orderly method of Zwingli. They opposed the tithe, usury, military service, and the oath.
They denied the right of the civil magistracy to interfere in matters of religion.
They met as "brethren" for prayer and Scripture-reading in the house of "Mother Manz," and in the neighborhood of Zurich, especially at Zollicon.

"Why may not the church, for good causes, devise ceremonies to decor the sacraments, and others [of] God's services?"Knox replied, "Because the kirk ought to do nothing but in faith: and ought not to go before, but is bound to follow the voice of the true Pastor."
Later during the exchange, Knox added:
"It is not enough that man invents a ceremony, and then gives it a signification, according to his pleasure.
But if anything proceeds from faith, it must have the word of God for the assurance; for you are not ignorant that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."Now, if you will prove that your ceremonies proceed from faith, and do please God,
you must prove that God in expressed words has commanded them; or else you shall never prove that they proceed from faith, nor yet that they please God;
but they are sin, and do displease him, according to the words of the apostle,

It is clear that the most intolerant effort within the American Restoration Movement is to become sectarian in order to attract the entertainment-based people and thereby exclude those who know that you can build spiritual life only on Christ at the center rather than the theatrical performance of preacher and musical team at the center. John Lock wrote:But since men are so solicitous about the true church, I would only ask them here, by the way, if it be not more agreeable to the Church of Christ
to make the conditions of her communion consist in such things, and such things only,
as the Holy Spirit has in the Holy Scriptures declared, in express words, to be necessary to salvation;I ask, I say, whether this be not more agreeable to the Church of Christ
than for men to impose their own inventions and interpretations upon others as if they were of Divine authority, and to establish by ecclesiastical laws, as absolutely necessary to the profession of Christianity, such things as the Holy Scriptures do either not mention, or at least not expressly command?Whosoever requires those things in order to ecclesiastical communion,
which Christ does not require in order to life eternal,he may, perhaps, indeed constitute a society accommodated to his own opinion and his own advantage; but how that can be called the Church of Christ which is established upon laws that are not His, and which excludes such persons from its communion as He will one day receive into the Kingdom of Heaven, I understand not.
Thomas Campbell Repeating History
3. That in order to this, nothing ought to be inculcated upon Christians as articles of faith;nor required of them as terms of communion,
but what is expressly taught and enjoined upon them in the word of God. Nor ought anything to be admitted, as of Divine obligation, in their Church constitution and managements, (Locke LT)but what is expressly enjoined by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ and his apostles upon the New Testament Church; either in express terms or by approved precedent
4. That although the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are inseparably connected, making together but one perfect and entire revelation of the Divine will, for the edification and salvation of the Church, and therefore in that respect can not be separated;
yet as to what directly and properly belongs to their immediate object, the New Testament is as for the worship, discipline, and government of the New Testament Church, and as perfect a rule for the particular duties of its members,
as the Old Testament was for the worship, discipline, and government of the Old Testament Church, and the particular duties of its members. (Declaration And Address)
Alexander Hislop, Presbyterian, on Instrumental Music1858
The worship of the Christian Church has not been left to be determined by the mere judgments and imaginations of men. There are principles laid down, there are precepts given, there are examples recorded, which show the mind and will of Christ in this matter; and the statements of Paul, in regard to "will-worship" (Col. 2:18-23), decisively prove that those who violate the purity of Christian worship,
are not only those who introduce practices which God has forbidden,
but those who introduce what God has not authorised, or commanded. There can be no meaning attached to the term, "will-worship," but that such "worship" rests, not on the "will" of God, but on the mere "will" or fancy of man.
To this we could add the testimony of every known theologian including all of the founders of denominations.
We repeat Rubel Shelly's statement: Rubel Shelly: "Where the Bible speaks, we speak; where the Bible is silent, we are silent."
- But hold on! Where did that dictum come from? It's not a Bible verse. It's a well-worn religious slogan that I think has some very positive value.
When you deny inspiration God sends you strong delusions to blind you and make you DEAF!We believe that any Bible student grasps that the Christian religion is informed by the Christian documents delivered from the Spirit which is the Mind of Christ (1 Cor 2).
Not all of us can take the seven facts about Jesus and using Narrative Theology compose our own story by "taking liberties" as Rubel Shelly claims to have the power to do.
Seemingly, all but the Post-Modern, Neo-Apostles believe that the New Testament is normative for faith and practice. And because it reveals a new form of worship which rids believers of the "spiritual anxiety created by religious ritual" which Jesus Christ defined as the "burdens" of the Jewish clergy, the how we worship is part of the "good news" or "gospel."
The almost-universal opinion of all theologians has been that God expresses his will through commands, examples or inferences. Alexander and Thomas Campbell continued this long historical and Biblical view.
Therefore, it is the neo-symps only who stand outside of the Bible and all historical evidence except the Catholic church which gives itself the right to go beyond what they acknowledge to be the Biblical facts.
While there will always be differences of opinion when men introduce things about which God is silent, or invent a new hermeneutic which includes 7 "ones" as the core gospel and rejects everything else from Christ the Spirit as the faulted interpretations of fallible apostles.
The "core" issue and motivation for the "core" gospel is to provide authority for instrumental music as the works of men's hands suitable to worship God or lead others into His presence.
The Catholic Encyclopedia disagrees with Dr. Shelly about the legal loopholes about time and place; and about commands:
(a) The first testimony is found in the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians (v, 19): "Speaking to yourselves in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord".
Cardinal Bona finds in these words a witness to the fact that
"from the very beginnings of the Church, psalms and hymns were sung in the assembly of the faithful", and understands them to refer to an alternated chant (mutuo et alterno cantu). [That excludes Fanny Crosby]
McEvilly in his "Commentary"
applies them to public and private meetings. St Augustine (Ep. cxix, ch. xviii) says:
"As to the singing of psalms and hymns, we have the
proofs, the
examples, and the
instructions of the Lord Himself, and of the Apostles". (Cf. also Col., iii, 16; I Cor., xiv, 26.)That means that the early church did not recognize a legal versus an illegal venue and it means commands, examples and inferences. And the Catholic Encyclopedia seems to have said something about Direct commands, examples and inferences.
To permit some of the people to worship with instruments some of the time is a legalism derived from a legal loop-hole by legalistic minds.
While Navigating the Winds of Change demands "prayerful brinkmanship" it is not surprising that musical churches still preach A Capella but practice instrumental in some of its events. A further, almost violent, navigating tool is to dismiss anyone who still rejects lifeless or carnal instruments as simply ignorant or worse.
Commands, examples and inferences have been the almost-universal means of determining the will of God for our lives. The word "inference" is not always used but it is cler that Spiritual minded people will want to listen carefully to hear God's will and follow it.
What can we conclude? We can conclude one of two things: first, those who are labeled "Thought Leaders" simply don't read the Bible or church history and therefore "know not what they do" when they organize a band to destroy churches of Christ for doing what has been done for 2000 years and believing that the Bible commands if you want unity. Therefore, they have no right to be followed.
Or, two, these Phd's actually know better and are trying to destroy the impact of the inspired Word and the reason almost always boils down to the lust to add musical worship which is the oldest form of idolatry known. Therefore, they need to be repudiated because they have the MARK.
