Stark Warlick Debate God Authorizes Instruments Music

"The Henderson Debate with Joe Warlick and J. Carroll Stark – Sealed the separation in Henderson over the instrument."
Dr. Hester writes of the debate: "The Stark-Warlick discussion of 1903 in Hlenderson, Tennessee has been called the most important struggle over the instrument of music in Christian worship.  W. W. Stone, a visitor from Texas who was at the debate, said, 'It appears to me that instrumental music in the church received the most complete and exhaustive defeat in this debate that it has ever before met with.'  Noted church historian Earl I. West said regarding Stone's comment, 'Judging from what happened, he may have been right.'

"After the debate the West Tennessee Christian College at Henderson, which was under the control of the Christian Church, closed its doors.  Shortly afterwards, A. G. Freed and N. B. Hardeman reopened a college connected with members of the churches of Christ.  This institution, now Freed-Hardeman University, has flourished and is influential."
Debate between  J. Carroll Stark and Joe S Warlick: God authorizes Instrumental Music 1903 at Henderson, Tennessee
"One of the most remarkable and historic debates in which Warlick participated was with J. C. Stark, November, 1903, in Henderson, Tennessee, where the church had been taken over by the digressives and the instrument installed. J. C. Clark, of Christian Church fame, was campaigning in West Tennessee, literally bombarding the churches on the instrumental music issue, an innovation threat to all the churches of Christ west of the Tennessee River. Through the solicitation of two young professors who were notable in the effort to stay the tide of digression—A. G. Freed and N. B. Hardeman—Joe Warlick was brought from Texas to Henderson to debate Stark. This debate stopped the music movement and had it not been held then, the history of churches in West Tennessee would have been very different. This debate saved the church from being swept into the Christian church movement.
Imposing instruments into a Church of Christ as A School of Christ (Christ, the epistles, Campbells) is based on the almost universal denominational teaching that the Law of Moses which they interpret as from Genesis to Malachi must be used in connection with the Teachings of Christ in the Prophets and Apostles.

INSTRUMENTALISTS MISTAKE: Without passing judgment on the Christian Churches, Baptists, Methodists, Presbuterians, it is a recored fact that what became Churches of Christ continued John Calvin's Call to Restore the Church of Christ by removing everything which the Catholics added.  Being Congregational and creedless, unity within a congregation (The Campbell view) always existed until the Society and Organ was imposed to break the unity of that congregation. That breaking of congregational unity happened about the same time in the Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians.

INSTRUMENTALISTS MISTAKE: Historic Scholarship understood that the Law of Moses was IMPOSED because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.  They also knew that the Monarchy especially under David CHANGED the Law because God had abandoned primarily the Levi tribe to worship the starry hosts: Amos restated the musical fall at Mount Sinai and proves that both Israel and Judah worshipped "gods" NAMED by Amos and Stephen in Acts 7.

Once Christian Bible Colleges by lusting to be universities by definition abandoned the LOGOS or Word of God which is defined as the REGULATIVE PRINCIPLE.  That includes most if not all of Church of Christ universities.

The evidence is that almost no preacher of the various "back to the Bible" movements believed that instruments (machines) had any role to play in the assembly which among the Campbells was A School of Christ. Furthermore, those trained in the Greek and Latin understood that God DOES forbid "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" which included any self-speak from the Church in the Wilderness onward.

Calling Down God's Holy Fire:  ACU professors,

"God's Holy Fire promises to challenge and enrich current study of the Bible in our churches...A must-read for Christians commited to applying God's Word to their daily lives.

1. "Eliminating the Old Testament from our canon severely curtails our understanding of the character and activities of God..." (p. 49).

2. "Recovering the Old Testament conversely could transform us more fully into what we have always sought to be--Churches of Christ" (ibid.).

3. "Recognizing that the Old Testament functions just as fully as the New in the canon of the church...." (p. 63).

4.  "Too often, we in churches of Christ have made a mistake in removing the Old Testament, for practical purposes, from our canon. The hole in Scripture has produced a hole in the practice of our faith" (p. 66).

By "Old Testament" these people mean and use the history of the Monarchy.  There is no command for instruments in a religious sense in the Law of Moses.  The Israelites brought "their amominations" with them when God rescued them from Egypt.  However, Miriam led the women out (to escape) using the Sistrum or Tabret as the symbol of her royal role as prophetess of Hathor the female consort of Apis the golden calf.  The people refused to listen to The Book of The Covenant and did not know that KEEPING the Sabbath (Rest) specificially excluded the music as a mark of idolatry.  They might say that God was SILENT because they refused to listen: in their ignorance the Rose up to Play which was the musical idolatry they brought from Egypt.

THEY say that God COMMANDED instrumental music in their "worship."
Scripture says that God IMPOSED The Book of the Law BECAUSE of vocal and instrumental rejoicing on the REST day. Work on the REST day God gave as freedom FROM religious observations prohibited "sending out ministers of god."
God ordained the Qahal, synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness to quarantine them in their isolated villages.
God Turned the Levi tribe over to worship the starry host: He saw the musical disturbance as their prayer to be free of Him.

IF THE REJECTION OF GRACE AND ABANDONMENT TO LAW WAS CAUSED BY INSTRUMENTAL REJOICING WHEN GOD GAVE THEM REST AFTER SAVING THEM BY UNDESERVED GRACE, AND GOD SENTENCED THEM TO "BABYLONIANISM" AND BACK TO BABYLON MEANING "NO RETURN" THEN WE SHOULD SHUDDER WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO LEAD BELIEVERS INTO THE SAME TRAP.

Jesus and the Apostles spoke only of Moses and the Prophets.  Psalms were poetic (not metrical) accounts of the history of the Hebrews: the good, bad and ugly.

A Church of Christ is built upon (educated by) the Prophets and Apostles: The only spiritual Covenant God in Christ made was to Abraham which was renewed as The Book of The Covenant at Mount Sinai. The people refused to keep it and God gave them The Book of the Law to legislate until God could send them beyond Babylon to captivity and Death.  The Prophets were writing for the spiritual people from the foundation of the World.  The Civil-Military-Clergy were ABANDONED to Sabazianism they had practiced in Egypt, would practice in Canaan and finally in Babylon. A church of Christ is NOT built upon the God-Abandoned Monarchy or the Lying Pen of the Scribes who boasted about the curse they had been abandoned to.

Alexander Campbell's Sermon on the Law was a massive slug into the belly of legalistic protestantism.

The Spirit OF Christ in the Prophets denied that God commanded the King, Kingddom, Temple, Animal sacrifices or the Jacob-cursed and God abandoned Levites to make exorcism noise during the unlawful murder of innocent animals.  The Jacob-Cursed and God-Abandoned Levites did not perform "instrumental worship" under the Law of Moses: they served under the king and commanders of the army.

"I am the Lord your God; walk in My statutes, and keep My judgments, and take no part in the customs of Egypt; and hallow My Sabbaths;
and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.
Notwithstanding ye rebelled against Me
, and your children walked not in My statutes, neither kept My judgments to do them: which if a man do, he shall live in them. But they polluted My Sabbaths.

And I said that I would pour out My fury upon them in the wilderness, to accomplish My anger upon them; yet I did it not; that My name might not be altogether profaned in the sight of the heathen.

I led them out before their eyes, and I lifted up Mine hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the heathen, and disperse them through the countries; because they had not executed My judgments, but had despised My statutes, and polluted My Sabbaths, and their eyes were after the devices of their fathers.

Wherefore I gave them also statutes which were not good, and judgments whereby they shall not live. And I shall pollute them in their own gifts, that I may destroy all that openeth the womb, when I pass through them. Ezek. xx. 19-26.

Ye who come to the evil day, who are approaching, and who hold to false Sabbaths; who lie on beds of ivory, and are at ease upon their couches; who eat the lambs out of the flock, and the sucking calves out of the midst of the herd;

who applaud at the sound of the musical instruments; they reckon them as stable, and not as fleeting,

who drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Wherefore now they shall be captives, among the first of the nobles who are carried away; and the house of evil-doers shall be removed, and the neighing of horses shall be taken away from Ephraim.'

And again by Jeremiah: "Collect your flesh, and sacrifices, and eat: for concerning neither sacrifices nor libations did I command your fathers in the day in which I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt.'

The Spirit of Christ denied that God commanded ANYTHING about the Monarchy.  In Jeremiah 7 Christ affirms that and defines the Law of Silence.

David could never go to Gibeon to "seek" the Lord because of his sin: God gave Him a place at an old Jebusite High Place already set up for the worship of the starry host.  God permitted him a TENT on Mount Zion but Solomon built God a HOUSE on Mount Moriah. But, God does not live in houses built by human hands.  Now excluded from the Tabernacle, David CHANGED the Law of Moses into a New Style of Worship. So says all scholarship.

There is no historic Scholar who did not understand that the Law of Moses was given because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. That Law did not define any INSTRUMENTAL NOISE even during their animal slaughter which was not God's Commands.  It was only when theElders FIRED God and demanded a human King: God knew that they wanted to slaughter like the nations and worship like the nations.  However, this would be for a short time until God gave them kings in His anger to transport them "beyond Babylon."

Chrysostom notes that:

Not a word of Temple, and the place is holy through the appearance and operation of Christ.

Far more wonderful this than the place which is in the Holy of Holies: for there God is nowhere said to have appeared in this manner, nor Moses to have thus trembled. And then the greatness of His tender care.

"I have seen, I have seen the affliction of My people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt." (v. 34.) See, how he shows, that both by kindnesses, and by chastisements, and by miracles, God was drawing them to Him: but they were still the same. That God is everywhere present, they learned.

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me" (v. 36, 37): set at naught like me. Him, likewise, Herod wished to kill, and in Egypt He found preservation just as it was with the former, even when He was a babe, He was aimed at for destruction.

"This is he, that was in the Church in the wilderness with the Angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us." (v. 38.)

Again no mention of temple, none of sacrifice.

"With the Angel," it says, "he received the lively oracles to give unto the fathers." It shows, that he not only wrought miracles, but also gave a law, as Christ did. Just as Christ first works miracles, and then legislates: so did Moses. But they did not hear him, keeping their disobedience, even after the miracles: "To whom," he says, "our fathers would not obey:" (v. 39) after the wonders done in those forty years. And not only so, but just the contrary: "but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt.

Editor's Note 7: dia gar touto epishmainetai. The meaning is: Stephen was accused of speaking against "the customs,"-sacrifices, temple, feasts, etc. Therefore he significantly points to that critical conjuncture. from which these "customs" date their introduction:

namely, the Provocation at Horeb.
Prior to that, he tells of "living oracles," life-giving precepts:
after it
, and as its consequence, sacrifices, etc.,

those statutes which were not good, and ordinances by which a man shall not live, as God says by Ezekiel.

Not a word of sacrifice till then: and the first mention is, of the sacrifices offered to the calf. In like manner, "they rejoiced," "the people ate and drank, and rose up to play:" and in consequence of this, the feasts were prescribed: kai eufrainonto, fhsin: dia touto kai eortai.-'Epishmainetai might be rendered, "he marks," "puts a mark upon it" (so the innovator, who substitutes, touto kai Dauid epishmainomenoj legei): we take it passively, "there is a mark set over it-it is emphatically denoted." In the active, the verb taken intransitively means
........... "to betoken or announce itself," "make its first appearance."-

Those who say that God COMMANDED INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC in the 'worship' build upon the foundation of the God-Abandoned Monarchy. Even then, their claim that God COMMANDED instrumental music in 2 Chronicles 29 (their only COMMAND) is WRONG. God commanded the Levites Stand in RANKS with sword and harps during the animal slaughter and unlawful BURNING.  They were to warn any godly person that if they, or even a Levite, came NEAR any presumed 'holy thing" or into any presumed 'holy place' they would be EXECUTED.  That proves that God used the sword to PREVENT any godly person from participating in the covenant or assemblies of the tribe of Levi outlawed in Genesis 49.  When the Levites made a great crashing noise during the burning of the Goats, the command was from DAVID and not God.

The first organ forced into a Christian Church was by a preacher who did not believe that the Bible had any authority: subsequent instrumentalists use Scripture along with common sense, tradition and church councils as ways the Holy Spirit speaks to them.  Churches of Christ have rarely had any preacher who does not understand that the only task is to "teach that which has been taught."

When the popularity and cash flow began to make grand buildings and professional musicians affordable, the PATTERN is to seek 'unity' with Churches of Christ: it was apparent to everyone that the fraternal relationships which lasted until around 1900 could no longer happen because the UNITY or FELLOWSHIP mantra always meant "we want your members and your property."  The "unity" impulse is still promoted with the Agent of the NACC bringing along a long list of 'instrument' passages even when it involves the Jacob-Cursed and God-Abandoned Levites who prophesied with instruments in the NOT-commanded sacrificial system.  Other than the writing Christ inspired prophets 'prophesying' means soothsaying which includes the word "sorcery" where the "customer" is aroused out of their pants and food money by women singing and playing instruments.
That means that Churches of Christ were never IN the Christian Church Movement.

Doesn't that mean that the claim that churches of Christ SECTED OUT of the Christian Churches which were right to SECT out of the Disciples in 1927 is a falsehood INTENDED to continue the drum beat of deliberate discord.  Christians don't do that: only organized institutions and publishers do that "seeing godliness as a means of financial gain." It happens in Churches of Christ by men seeking to cut out TURF for themselves.

Stark p10 The principles which underlie the law are set forth in the gospel of the grace of God,
and the principles are claimed in the gospel are the basis of the legal straints till the spiritual in the race could be developed.
There can be no antagonism between the Law and the gospel.

The Law of Moses was IMPOSED because of Vocal and Instrumental Rejoicing on the Sabbath or REST DAY.  Contrary to the pagans, god set the pattern of REST each Sabbath Day. By engaging in perverted religious idolatry the REJECTED JEHOVAH-ELOHIM who rescued the by GRACE from Egypt. This was a sin beyond Redemption and God gave them the LAW and later "Gave them kings in His anger."

        The gospel was not a change in the divine will and character;
but when humanity, held under legal restraint,
was sufficiently developed through the teachings of the prophets of God
to come under principles of higher cultur as set forth in the prophets.
God took it from under the bondage of the Law and placed it under the culture of a higher spirituality.

No preacher willing to use music "to teach our youth to leave our movement" knows or can know that The Book of The Law of Moses was added because of instrumental idolatry at Mount.  They ALL think that The Law of Moses (added because of transgression when God ABANDONED them) was GOD'S BEST EFFORT because His Creatures had not yet EVOLVED.

Jacob cursed the tribe of Levi and God abandoned them to the worship of the starry host (Acts 7) because of insrtrumental idolatry of the always-pagan triads at Mount Sinai.  The Abrahamic Covenant was the only spiritual covenant made by God in Christ.  The Book of The Covenant of Grace was offered to Israel when they were saved by grace from Egypt.  They REFUSED to listen to the Covenant and were ignorant that keeping the REST day outlawed engaging in any of the Worship of the Starry Host involving musical idolatry which led to sexual and homosexual PLAY.  As a result God turned them over to worship the Starry host and gave them The Book of The Law "because of this transgression": vocal and instrumental rejoicing Christ would outlaw for the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness.

The Law of Moses was to regulated an abandoned nation on their way back to Babylon.  The Godly people went to synagogue to learn the Word (only) and were always quarantined from the Law of the Monarchy.  The godly people never went to WORSHIP services with instrumental accompaniment.  If one missed the Musical fall from grace at Mount Sinai recorded in Exodus 32 and other places, it is hard to understand how one could miss Acts 7 where Stephen repudiated the whole monarchy system.

Sym. 7.5 However, these questions also fail to promote the same object that wine does; but if the young people were to have a flute accompaniment and dance figures depicting the Graces, the Horae, and the Nymphs, I believe that they would be far less wearied themselves and that the charms of the banquet would be greatly enhanced.”

“Upon my word, Socrates,” replied the Syracusan, “you are quite right; and I will bring in a spectacle that will delight you.”

The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music)

"We know that all of the Israelites brought Egyptian gods and practices with them and it is not far-fetched to think that Miriam, who had not yet been exposed to the Covenant, was part of the consciousness-altering rhythms and which was part of a priestly myth-play brought to destructive consummation at Mount Sinai as the golden calf was called back into action.

This "rising up to play" involved eating, drinking, nakedness and musical worship. The goddess, Hathor, is the best candidate for the Mother Goddess of the Mount Sinai idolatry. Here priestesses or prophetesses were highly trained with musical instruments, cultic songs and be able to join in the religious dance.

"Music and drugs were co-consiprators in religious ecstasy. They may have used some product of the sycamore fig which both intoxicated and induced an altered state of consciousness. The ergo of barley was well known. Anton Marks

A Church of Christ is built upon (educated by) the Prophets by the Spirit OF Christ and the prophecies made more certain by Jesus of Nazareth: Peter says that these prophetic teaching are not for private interpretation or further expounding: those who further expound the Prophets are called false teachers.

The Jews had "A covenant with death and hell" and there is nothing in the monarchy which has any connection to the prophets by Christ.

The scholars missed the Qahal, synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness which defined:

Neither the Covenant made with Abraham (the only one), The Book of The Covenant or The Book of The Law authorized but outlawed profaning the REST day: this is the HALAL or making self vile "praise" word which MARKED them as under the rule of pagan gods.

If God ABANDONED Israel as a nation and QUARANTINED them FROM the neo-Babylonianism (Egyptian, Canaanite), THEN what God's do you suppose they worshipped?  Amos and Stephen gives us great details.

David Changed the Law for the Monarchy: The Spirit OF Christ in the prophets calls the Civil-Military-Clergy complex Robbers and Parasites.  Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees, HYPOCRITES.  In Ezekiel 33 He named self-speakers, singers and instrument players.

The Elders demanded a King Set over us (senior pastor): God knew that they wanted to slaughter their enemies "like the nations" and worship like the nations.  They would until God "gave them kings in His anger" to carry out the captivity and death sentence.  The Law of the Monarchy was NOT the Law of Moses

There was no "music" under the Law of Moses. Instrumental soothsaying was imposed as God abandoned the tribe of Levi to the worship of the Starry Host: they had already been sentenced BEYOND Babylon which meant "no return."

That's true: but the Spirit OF Christ in the prophets denounces the Monarchy which did not follow the Law of Moses which authorized no noise making instruments.  These were added by David who CHANGED the Law to agree with God's abandonment to worship the starry host.

Bad men, when they avoid certain vices, fall into their opposite extremes.

1.2.5 The tribes of female flute-players,1 quacks, vagrants, mimics, blackguards;  all this set is sorrowful and dejected on account of the death of the singer Tigellius; for he was liberal [toward them]. On the other hand, this man, dreading to be called a spendthrift, will not give a poor friend [5] wherewithal to keep off cold and pinching hunger.

1 Ambubaiarum , "Women who played on the flute." It is derived from a Syrian word; for the people of that country usually excelled in this instrument. Pharmacopolae is a general name for all who deal in spices, essence, and perfumes.

2 “Mendici, mimae, balatrones” . The priests of Isis and Cybele were beggars by profession, and under the vail of religion were often guilty of the most criminal excesses. Mimae were players of the most debauched and dissolute kind; and balatrones, in general, signifies all scoundrels, buffoons, and parasites, who had their name, according to the old commentator, from Servilius Balatro. “Balatrones hoc genus omne”, for omne hoc balatronum genus, is a remarkable sort of construction.

The solemnity celebrated on the occasion of the transferring of the Ark to Sion, as well as the dances of the daughters of Israel at the annual feast of the Lord of Shiloh (Judg 21:21), were similar in thier musical embellishments to Egyptian customs in the liturgy and at parades. As Herodotus reports, women sang the praises of Osiris while likenesses of the gods were born about and, during the festival of Diana at Bubastis,

choirs of men and women sang and danced to the beating of drums and the playing of flutes." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 65)

Strab. 10.3.15   They invented terms appropriate to the sounds of the pipe, of the crotala, cymbals, and drums; to the noise also of shouts; to the cries of Evoe; and to the beating of the ground with the feet. They invented certain well-known names also to designate the ministers, dancers, and servants employed about the sacred rites, as Cabeiri, Corybantes, Pans, Satyri, Tityri, the god Bacchus; Rhea, Cybele, Cybebe, and Dindymene, from the places where she was worshipped. [The god] Sabazius belongs to the Phrygian rites, and may be considered the child as it were of the [Great] Mother. The traditional ceremonies observed in his worship are those of Bacchus

and they called the god "Bacchus," and Rhea "Cybele" or "Cybebe" or "Dindymene" according to the places where she was worshipped. Sabazius also belongs to the Phrygian group and in a way

(Priests of Cybele were effeminate and emasculated themselves. Paul said in Galatians 5:12, "As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!" The agitators "drove people out of their homes (churches?)) All pagan gods or goddesses and therefore their priests were homosexual.

Stark etal cannot grasp that God did NOT speak through the "Lying Pen of the Scribes" who kept the records of the NOT commanded king, kingdom, temple, sacrifices or the Soothsaying with Instruments or SORCERY. This was for the Jacob-Cursed and God-abandoned tribe of Levi whom the godly people should AVOID in theyr synagogues until the Lion of the Tribe of Judah came.

And in Corinth the sweet-breathing Muse blossoms, and also Ares, with the deadly spears of young men.

Stark p10 I have never known a man who rejected the Old that was not narrow and bigoted and domineering in his teachings of the New.  By the prophets was the character of god made known, and the principles he would develop in men were ty them set forth.  Peter connectes the prophets of the Old and the evangelso of the New under the guiding of the same Spirit whe he, speaking of the great salvation of their souls.

The Spirit OF Christ spoke through the Prophets: He repudiates those under the Law of the Monarchy as robbers and parasites. Furthermore, He define the REST for the Godly who attended the Synagogue or Church OF Christ (the Rock) in the Wilderness.  In the Prophets, Christ defines the only REST given by Him in the synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ.
1Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
1Peter 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently,
who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
1Peter 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify,
when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
1Peter 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves,
but unto us they did minister the things,
which are now reported unto you by them that have
        preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven;
which things the angels desire to look into.
First, The OLD TESTAMENT is The Book of The Law which was IMPOSED because of musical idolatry.
Second. The History of the Monarchy was NOT under the Law of Moses which includes NO instrumental music.
Third, The Spirit OF Christ (the Rock) outlawed "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" for the synagogue which QUARANTINED the godly people FROM the cursed sacrificial system which God did not command.
Fourth, the Spirit OF Christ in the prophets REPUDIATES the Civil-Military-clergy complex He calls Robbers and Parasites: sacrificial instrument players were called PARASITES.

Christ warns about the "Lying pen of the Scribes" especially related to the Temple which God did NOT command:
Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hebrews 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,
        whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

God created by His Word as in WordS: God made Jesus of Nazareth TO BE both Lord and Christ and Word in a visible-audibe form.
Stark and almost ALL people who "see godliness as a means of financial gain" or just occupation do NOT understand that God did NOT speak through the Kings or Priests IMPOSED because of the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai to serve THE WORSHIP OF THE STARRY HOST.
Matthew 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased;
and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Matthew 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
In Ezekiel 33 Christ names mercinary preachers who speak on their own
(sons of the Devil says Jesus)
He names singers, instrument players and ALL of the audience
for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men:
for ye neither go in yourselves,
neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
        for ye devour widows’ houses,
and for a pretence make long prayer: [hymns]
therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte,
and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Matthew 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say,
        Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing;
but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

Matthew 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
because ye build the tombs of the prophets,
and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Matthew 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers,
we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Matthew 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves,
that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
Matthew 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers,
how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Zech 7:10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor;
and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Zechariah 7:11

They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law
or to the
words that the LORD Almighty
had
sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.
So the LORD Almighty was very angry. Zechariah 7:12

Therefore it is come to pass, that

as he cried, and they would not hear;
so
they cried, and I would not hear,
saith the Lord of hosts: Zechariah 7:13

Zech 7:14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not.
Thus the land was desolate after them,
that no man passed through nor returned:
for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

Stark thought of worship as the EMOTION of the soul
and that it might "produce singing, shouting, praising,
leaping, dancing, hand clapping, or thanksgiving
and such should not be suppressed by man made rules."

Strabo Geography 10.3.15

[10.3.15] They invented names appropriate to the flute, and to

the noises made by castanets, cymbals, and drums,
and to their acclamations and shouts of "ev-ah," and stampings of the feet;
and they also invented some of the names by which to designate the [homosexual, emasculated]

ministers, choral dancers, and attendants upon the sacred rites,
I mean "
Cabeiri" and "Corybantes" and "Pans" and "Satyri" and "Tityri,"

and they called the god "Bacchus," and Rhea [Eve] "Cybele" or "Cybebe" or "Dindymene" according to the places where she was worshipped. Sabazius also belongs to the Phrygian group and in a way is the child of the Mother,, since he too transmitted the rites of Dionysus.

"The physiological act of sex and orgasm not only greatly enhances the prospects, but also fires up further excitement. "Repeatedly induced states of orgasmic collapse can produce, and have been used to produce, states of deep trance."

This is precisely the sexual purpose of an orgy as religious rite, and, in part, what the Greek God APOLLO fed CYPARISSUS in the wilds. The orgia, from which our word orgy is derived, of THE MYSTERY RELIGIONS of DIONYSOS and his homosexual SATYRS, were (in addition to the magic mushrooms and other psychoactive potions) rituals of this kind.

Candidates for initiation into the KABIRI were crowned with a garland of olive and wore a purple band round their loins. The dancing was then begun.

In fact, homosexuality was part of the ritual, what the historians in their scholarly dungeons called their "most immoral tendencies." The purpose was to evoke a passage beyond earth to a higher life. That is, "to lead the worshipers into the presence of the gods." That is, in their mystical dances, continued leaping into the air achieves a shamanic state of trance, a transfer of consciousness analogous to the transformation of the magician into a bird whereby the apprentice masters his powers to join a gay brotherhood "who, by nature, are superior to other men." Resource

Catullus: Haste you together, she-priests, to Cybele's dense woods, together haste, you vagrant herd of the dame Dindymene, you who inclining towards strange places as exiles, following in my footsteps, led by me, comrades, you who have faced the ravening sea and truculent main, and have castrated your bodies in your utmost hate of Venus, make glad our mistress speedily with your minds' mad wanderings.

Let dull delay depart from your thoughts, together haste you, follow to the Phrygian home of Cybele, to the Phrygian woods of the Goddess, where sounds the cymbal's voice, where the tambour resounds, where the Phrygian flutist pipes deep notes on the curved reed, where the ivy-clad Maenades furiously toss their heads, where they enact their sacred orgies with shrill-sounding ululations, where that wandering band of the Goddess flits about: there it is meet to hasten with hurried mystic dance."

When Attis, spurious woman, had thus chanted to her comity, the chorus straightway shrills with trembling tongues, the light tambour booms, the concave cymbals clang, and the troop swiftly hastes with rapid feet to verdurous Ida.

Then raging wildly, breathless, wandering, with brain distraught, hurries Attis with her tambour, their leader through dense woods, like an untamed heifer shunning the burden of the yoke: and the swift Gallae press behind their speedy-footed leader. So when the home of Cybele they reach, wearied out with excess of toil and lack of food they fall in slumber. Sluggish sleep shrouds their eyes drooping with faintness, and raging fury leaves their minds to quiet ease.

Stark  These commands of men are the creed of their division of God's people.  Like Paul's '"man of sin," they have taken their place in the temple of God and assume to speak as God.
God put it INTO his sanctuary by command; and if he has not taken it out,
it remains there, unless some one claiming superior authority to God shall as God put it out of the temple of God. That character
Paul calls "the man of sin who opposseth and exalteth himself above all that is called God:
        The Doom of such is HELL I need no authority for using it;
for where there is no law, there is no transgression. [p.15]

Stark p. 16  The whole thing comes from a devilish, domineering spirit, which, instead of worshiping God, has taken God's seat in judgment to control the praise others might bring  It is well enough to teach them: but "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubborness is as iniquity and idolatry." (1 Sam. 15:23)

It would seem that IMPOSING an instrument where many are opposed is DOMINATING: worship is something that goes on IN SPIRIT and not IN FLESH: no one can give attention to God when all of the attention is sucked up by musical performance.  Unfortunately, many or most are quite willing to IMPOSE their will on others when they are quite ignorant and abusive.  Destroying the commanded silence is to intentionally "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter." That Stark is ignorant so that God deludes him and stabs him in the hinder parts we quote:

1 Sam 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

STRATOPHANES (to PHRONESIUM.) What say you? Why have you dared to say that you love another man?
PHRONESIUM I chose to.
STRATOPHANES Say you so, indeed? I'll first make trial of that. Do you, for the sake of such a shabby present, vegetables, and comestibles, and vinegar-water, bestow your love upon an effeminate, frizzle-pated, dark-haunt frequenting, drum-drubbing debauchee, a fellow not worth a nutshell:

Note 6 Is he deranged: "Hariolus." Literally, "a soothsayer," or "diviner." In their prophetic frenzy, these persons often had the appearance of being mad, and were so considered.
Note 7 Drum-drubbing debauchee: "Typanotriba." Literally, "drum," or "tambourine beater." He alludes to the eunuch-priests of Cybele, who used to beat tambourines in her procession-probably in allusion to debauchees, emasculated by riot and dissipation

Gal 5:12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!

CHRYSOSTOM IDENTIFIES those who drive you out of your homeland:

That by lying about the Spirit OF Christ universal condemnation of music a the MARK of telling God to "Shut your face."
For they had compelled them to abandon their own fatherland, their liberty, and their heavenly kindred, and to seek an alien and foreign one; they had cast them out of Jerusalem which is above and free, and compelled them to wander forth as captives and emigrants.....But in truth neither the eye nor any other part of us is to blame, but the depraved will only.

But if you will not allow this, why do you not mutilate the tongue for blasphemy, the hands for rapine, the feet for their evil courses, in short, the whole body?
For the ear enchanted by the sound of a flute hath often enervated the soul; and the perception of a sweet perfume by the nostrils hath bewitched the mind, and made it frantic for pleasure. Yet this would be extreme wickedness and satanic madness. Note 1.

ALL musical terms speak of enchantment or SORCERY: why else would people LIE about the Bible, lie TO God and lie ABOUT God? A note reads:

Note 1: Paul wishes that the circumcisers would not stop with circumcision but go beyond it to mutilation (make themselves eunuchs) like the priests of Cybele. A severe irony and similar to the one in Philip. iii. 2, 3, where Paul calls the boasters of circumcision “the Concision.” Self mutilation was a recognized form of heathen worship especially in Pessinus in Galatia and therefore quite familiar to the readers. Thus by their glorying in the flesh the Galatians relapsed into their former heathenism,--Schaff and Lightfoot. The Revised Version here has, “would even cut themselves off,” the American Committee has, “would go beyond circumcision.”—G.A.]

Beginning with the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai where the music aroused people into sexual perversion (Romans 1):

From the Golden Calf: The Canaanites were under Assyro-Babylonian dominance from 3000 to 1700 BCE. Even by circa 1400 BCE, their influence was still so great that all correspondence with Egypt and the Pharaoh was conducted in Babylonian, and the name of the moon-god Sin formed the basis for the Canaanite names Sinai and the wilderness of Sin (ERE, Vol. 3, p. 183). The hand of Sin was seen in the cause of Catatonia or madness in children - hence, lunacy is associated with this deity (ibid., p. 527). Sin moon-god of Harran was also worshipped at Sam'al at the foot of Mount Amanus (ibid., Vol. 2, p. 295). Sin was the Baal of Harran mentioned in the correspondence at the time of Sennacharib, Esarhaddon and Ashurbanipal. Sargon (722-706 BCE) confirmed the exemption Harran enjoyed from taxes as the city of Sin (ibid.). Nabonidas last king of Babylon (555-539 BCE) rebuilt the temple of Sin at Harran. Sin became identified with Be'el-shamin the owner of the sky from the Syrian dominance at Harran combining the Syrian god with the ancient moon-god. This deity was identified with Zeus by the Greeks from Phoenicia and Palmyra and elsewhere enjoying their patronage and spread from Mesopotamia into Armenia. Ultimately, he became identified with Anu, Lord of Heaven of Babylon (ibid., Vol. 2, p. 295).

From the earliest times (c. 4000 BCE), there were triads formed of Enlil, Anu and Enki. The second triad was formed from Ur, moon-god of Ur, Utu sun-god of Sippar, and Nana goddess of Erech (ibid., p. 296). The moon-god of Ur can be identified with Sin. The Semitic term Bel was used among the Babylonian Semites derived from Baal in the same sense as it was used by the other Semites and in addition used it as master or lord (ibid.).

The Israelites rose up in PLAY or musical idolatry at Mount Sinai: the trinity was Osiris, Isis and Hathor:

-Gallus , i, m., = Gallos Strab., 2. (Acc. to II. A., of or belonging to the priests of Cybele; hence, transf.) Of or belonging to the priests of Isis, Gallic: “turma,” the troop of the priests of Isis, Ov. Am. 2, 13, 18.

Stark: Nothing but the grace of God can bring such a man to repentance.  If taken as he is to the "city of gold," he would surely raise hell in heaven and make all "know and feel what it is to be there."

Strange, all of the hell and burning and lake of fire is directly connected to using instruments to silence the Word of God which is the only purpose for the assembly CALLING ITSELF together to "use one mind and one mouth to speak that which is written for our learning and comfort.

Beginning with the musical idolatry at Mount Sinai where the music aroused people into sexual perversion (Romans 1):
Of course, no one in history did not know that you cannot do two things at the same time: worship IN THE SPIRIT is defined uniquely as giving attendance to the Word of Christ.  You cannot give attention to the WORD of Christ while someone is playing a harp.  Your brain works it's heart out trying to keep track of every buzz or clang around it: that disables the rational or spiritual nature.  No one was so foolish that the concept of the SERPENT from BRASS or bell metal absolutely takes the mind captive and allows them to fill it with falsehood or cause the worshiper to obey the LAW OF SILENCE which would be witchcraft-induced extortion.

Stark: V. That in the distinction made by Paul between hymns and psalms he authorized the use of instrumental music in the worship of the church.

The translators of the Greek Septuagint used the PSAO based words including PSALLO because they understood that the Psalms consisted of a lot of bitter hatred for David's personal enemies.  There are about 50 mizmors which do not name an instrument.  For instance PSALLO has the same root meaning as PSAO or SOP.
A Psalm is a poem: a large number warrior attack chants.
The name of psaltery entered Christian literature in the 3rd century B.C. translation of the Old Testament called the Septuagint where, in the Psalms, nebel was translated psalterion. Thus, Nebuchadnezzar's idolatrous ensemble included the Aramic psantria. Notice, also, that the book of Psalms has also become known as the Psalter (or psalterium), from the hymns sung with this harp. Source

So, it was the translators of the Septuatint who used the "Psa" based words knowing fully well that in the Greek world the message was making war or making perverted sex.  Not all of the book of psalms are psalms

Psalmos also appears in the LXX as equivalent to the Hebrew word neginah [5058]. This Hebrew term is used to describe a wide variety of songs. Neginah is translated by psalmos in Lam 3:14 (song), in Lam 5:14 (music) and in Ps 69:12 (song). It is striking to observe that in the LXX translation of Lam 3:14 and Ps 69:12, psalmos, or its verbal form, is used for songs that are not only uninspired but are in fact the product of the wicked, even drunkards, who mocked God and His word. The Hebrew term neginah is used elsewhere in the Hebrew Scriptures of: the songs of the wicked, Job 30:9 (song); the inspired praise of God, Psalm 61 title (Neginah-a song performed on a stringed instrument); and the uninspired praisd of the Lord composed by King Hezekiah, Is 38:20 (my songs).

VIl. That it is positively commanded by the apostles and thus authorized by the Holy Spirit under the gospel dispensation.  This should end the conroversy--'Where God speaks, we will speak.'

The new mantra by men like Rick Atchley is that the goat and infant instrumental noise by the Jacob-cursed and God-abandoned Levites is now his COMMAND FOR INSTRUMENTAL PRAISE and he warns against DISOBEDIENCE.

Of course, the Greeks understood a HYMN as  a PRAYER: Jesus and the Spostles SPOKE (Dicto) A hymn and went out.  in Ephesians 5 Paul FIRST commanded that they SPEAK psalms, hymns and spiritual songs: these are all types of the BOOK of Psalms.  Psalms were Teaching Psalms telling the history of the Jew in poetic form but NOT metrical: you CANNOT sing the psalms.
This SPEAKING that which is written for our learning is FOR OUR LEARNING.

The word PSALLO has no connection with Instrumental Music: never at any time in recorded history.  WAY down the list, if you smite a lyre string you are not making 'instrumental music.'

The attack was mounted in Tennessee perhaps because of religious journalism fighting over turf: it is clear that the instrumentalists DEMANDED that everyone become INSTRUMENTALISTS or there would be no UNITY. This precipitated the

Stark: [p. 18] Shall Alexander Campbell... say to the sweet singer or the wonderful musician: "Keep still and let expressive silence muse his praise?"  Shame on such dogmatism, when God has given us such varied talent. Who put the twelfth commandment into God's law, saying: "Thou shalt not have an instrument of music in the congregaton of the saints?" David, the destructive critic, when like the "man of sin," he sits in the temple of God, says: "Thou shalt not." That is the cornerstone of his departure--the foundation of his schism.  Their church is built upon it, and a few old fogies have made it a test of fellowship.  God will shake their thounder out of them and put some lightning into them one of these days.

To think MUSIC means that people do not understand the meaning of CHURCH as School of Christ and the task is to teach DISCIPLES OF CHRIST what He commanded to be taught.  The word WORSHIP in the worldly sense is not what Jesus died for.

Stark p. 18.19 My Third argument is from Amos 6:1-2
Amos 6:1 Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!
Amos 6:2 Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?
Amos 6:3 Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
Amos 6:4 That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall;
Amos 6:5 That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;
Amos 6:6 That drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments:
but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.
Amos 6:7 Therefore now shall they go captive with the first that go captive, and the banquet of them that stretched themselves shall be removed.

Stark: The man who uses this as against instruments in praise is too ignorant to be a teacher in Israel or too dishonest to belong to the kingdom  The Woe is to the that are at ease in Zion.  A man must have a hard case or be a very indifferent exegete to try to make Amos cry against instrumental music.

By ridiculing other people's view Amos and claiming that you can do ALL of those things as long as you are NOT AT EASE, Stark and other mean that imitating King David as Warrior and blood-letter is their APPROVAL of instrumental music in what they do not understand as A School of Christ.

Verse 1 pronounces the WOE to those at ease in Zion but the rest of the chapter defines the CAUSES OR SYMPTOMS of being at ease and not caring for the affliction coming on them.  The music is NESTED with other things that Stark would not approve as acts of worship.

Stark p. 39 thinks that all of these activities are the gracious giving of thanks for all of these gifts: he has not read Amos.
Woe to them who are at ease:
You put off the evil day and cause the seat of violence to come near.  Now, being at ease would not CAUSE violence.
You lie on beds of ivory
    You stretch upon couches
You eat lambs out of the flock
You eat calves out of the stalls
You chant to the sound of the viol
    You invents instruments like David
But, you are not grieved and will go captive
Why? Because all of these events are celebrating the marzeah: A feast with and for dead ancestors.

Israel had a covenent with death and hell.  Why? Because God had abandoned them to the worship of the starry host because of their exact musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

5. Jane Carter, Tulane U.: "Thiasos and Marzeah: Ancestor Cult in the Age of Homer"

Syssitia of Sparta and Crete very similar: music, singing, probably lyre in both places; very similar institution, apparently: the Marzeah of Syria-Palestine, a gathering of prominent men in a house with its own vineyard supply, hereditary membership, perhaps involving a cult of ancestors. 8th c.

Hebrew prophet Amos denounces the luxurious marzeah of Samaria with men reclining on ivory couches; common motifs on ivory plaques: winged guardians, women at window, grazing animals, themes of fertility & rebirth, life-death transitions; Aristotle noted similarity of syssitia of Carthage to those of Crete & Sparta; fragment of Alcman re andreion, singing of paian; a thiasos was involved in syssitia; LXX OT translates marzeah as thiasos; orgeones are members of thiasos or koinon; inscription found in Piraeus: in Phoenician, by Sidonians, ref to a koinon; similar scenes are found on Attic geometric krateres.

Apparently an aristocratic cult institution whose participants can expect to join ancestors in afterlife.

Conrad L'Heureux demonstrated that the marzeah, or symposium (feast, gathering, banquet, assembly) of El that is found in the Rephaim Texts of Ugarit "must be a reflex in the divine world of the symposium celebrated by the members of the earthly marzeah of El...each guild apparently had a divine patron."42 The heavenly marzeah had participants called rp'm, which we also find in the earthly marzeah, e.g., "May Krt be greatly exalted among the rp'm of the earth...the rp'm constitute an aristocracy of which the Canaanite kings were a part."43 Moses, and the prophets following him were proclaimed as "Speakers for Yahweh," showing the people that "they are sent from the divine king, the suzerain of treaties, to reprove and to pronounce judgment upon Israel..."44

Note 42: Conrad L'Heureux, "The Ugaritic and Biblical Rephaim," Harvard Theological Review, 67(1974): 270-271.

Note 43. Conrad L'Heureux, Rephaim, 271. Cf. 272, footnote 25, the authority of El is ordinarily exercised through the younger generation of gods whom we could call the executive deities. It is also possible to understand the term rp'm as "the assembly of the gods." The entire premise of Jacobsen's article "Primitive Democracy," is that the groups and assemblies on earth reflected what the gods had done in heaven.

This was called "prophesying" by those who "made self a prophet." David made his warrior musicians into PROPHESIERS which means ot make war or make sorcery and never make spirituall Word. The Israelites had been abandoned ot Dionysus or Bacchus "worship of the starry host" because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai. God heard that as a prayer and answered them.  Therefore, when you lift prooftexts out of the Monarchy, king, temple and sacrificial system you are restoring the Abomination of Desolation which featured Zeus and Dionysus (new wineskin god) in the Temple. This ultimately, like the word PSALM and PSALMOS is Egyptian-Greek and not faithful Israelites:

Aristophanes' Lysistrata:

Call upon Bacchus, afire with his Maenades [mad women];
Call upon Zeus in the
lightning arrayed;
Call on his
queen, ever blessed, adorable;
Call on the holy, infallible Witnesses,
Call them to witness the peace and the harmony,
This which divine Aphrodite has made.

Allala! Lalla! Lallala! Lallala!
Whoop for victory, Lallalalae!
Evoi!  Evoi!  Lallala, Lallala!
Evae!  Evae!  Lallalalae.

"The marzeah had an extremely long history extending at least from the 14th century B.C. through the Roman period. In the 14th century B.C., it was prominently associated with the ancient Canaanite city of Ugarit (modern Ras Shamra), on the coast of Syria...

The marzeah was a pagan ritual that took the form of a social and religious association... Some scholars regard the funerary marzeah as a feast for--and with--deceased ancestors (or Rephaim, a proper name in the Bible for the inhabitants of Sheol)." (King, Biblical Archaeological Review, Aug, 1988, p. 35, 35)

"These five elements are:
........(1) reclining or relaxing,
........(2) eating a meat meal,
........(3) singing with harp or other musical accompaniment,
........(4) drinking wine and
........(5) anointing oneself with oil." (King, p. 37).

THIS WAS RISING UP TO PLAY AND THE PLAY OF DAVID WHERE EVERYONE GOT A SHARE OF FOD.

"we recognize the same elements: the sacrifices and libation, the cultic feast in which the congregation gets a share of food and drink after it has been blessed by the king, and the merry-making, now in the form of instrumental and vocal music. But the central act of the ritual, which was performed by the king, is called literally 'drinking' the god (Gurney, O. R. Some Aspects of Hittite Religion, p. 33-34, Oxford University Press, 1977)

This won't shock the literate who know that because of the MUSICAL IDOLATRY at Mount Sinai God TURNED THEM OVER to worship the starry host.

"The normal order of events was a meal, followed by a drinking party. Entertainment might include anything from a rhetorcian or philosopher discoursing on some topic, to musical entertainment, to sexual dalliance."

"Plutarch implicitly contrasts a serious dinner featuring a sage as the after-dinner speaker with the other sorts of dinners--where sexual play with the girl flute-players or hetairae was common." (Witherington, Ben, Why Not Idol Meat, Bible Review, June 1994, p. 41-42).

Assuming that Catholics impose all of their trappings, If he opposes, though it may have been his money largely that built the house of worship, we will make these things tests offellowship; and if he cannot in conscience wirship them them, he can get out.  So we drive him out of the house he built and confiscate the property.  This is the course taken by the "digressives" in almost every place where the organ has been forced into the worship.  If it is not the spirit of the devil, then beelzebub himself will be in heaven and the great red dragon of Rev. 1`2 will walk the streets of the New Jerusalem, sanctified and made meet for the Master's use.

Warlick p. 31 Stark claimed that a hen cackling outside the building could not disturb his worship.  Neither would someone playing an organ down the streed.  However, what if Stark brought the cackling hen inside as an act of worship.

Paul's simple commands
SPEAK (opposite to poetry or music) to one another to educate and comfort
Aeido and Psallo IN the heart directed TO God.

That is because both words speak of smiting, abrading, grinding (psallo-sop) and just making noise with not LOGOS content.  "Melody as tunefulness belongs to the 19th century."  And even now melody limits you to a series of single notes:  a melody in that world might just be one note ^^^   ^^^    .  "Singing" was making a noise as an ancient would hear "churchy" singing as screeching in screaming.  Paul's speak would be to HYMN or in the style of Hebrew cantillation.
Aeidō , .: hence of all kinds of vocal sounds, crow as cocks, Pl.Smp..223c; hoot as owls, Arat.1000; croak as frogs, Arist. Mir.835b3, Thphr.Sign.3.5, etc.; hoi tettiges [LOCUSTS] twang, of the bow-string, 'to crow too soon'  OPPOSITE. logos kalōs rhētheis, [SPEAK]
This COULD NOT be tuneful singing: it simply did not exist then and not appreciated even now unless it has the Voodoo beat.
Warlick: Brother Stark wants to know if, when praying in his closet, an old hen cackles outside, whether he should cease praying and go outside and compel the hen to quit cackling until he has finished his prayer. Of course not in that case. Neither does any one object to the organ playing on the outside when not in the worship. I now ask my brother whether he would continue his prayer if some one should go outside, get that old hen, bring her into his closet, and compel her to cackle while he worshiped, and thus compel him to cackle with her or else cease cackling entirely. He would, no doubt, leave his own closet in the possession to the two intruders. Does he say that he would object? But what could he do? Would not the man reply: "You will just submit or get out. You must not speak where God has not spoken; and I challenge you to show in all the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, where God has said, `Thou shalt not bring a cackling hen into the sanctuary of the saints;' and, besides, does not David say: `Let everything that has breath praise the Lord?' This chicken has breath; let it praise the Lord?" My brother, how do you like this argument? It is precisely like what you offer in favor of the organ. If there is any difference, it is better than you can find for your proposition (31-32). Truth

Paul commanded to SPEAK Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (inspired).  A Hymn is a PRAYER according to the Greeks and Jesus and the apostles SPOKE (Dicto) a hymn.  Paul commands that we SPEAK the Psalms: in Romans 15 the command is to "use one mind and one mouth to teach that which is written for our LEARNING" or Comfort BY the Scriptures.  Singing has always been DISCOMFORTING to a large majority of the population because it is that elevated, feminine style associated with panic.

Paul, understanding the nature of the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness and the direct commands of Jesus did not call the assembly a WORSHIP SERVICE.

Worship which is conducted in musical rituals comes from the orgies of Orpheus: Gregory Nazianzen notes:

"Nor are these Thracian orgies, from which the word Worship (threskia) is said to be derived; nor rites and mysteries of Orpheus, whom the Greeks admired so much for his wisdom that they devised for him a lyre which draws all things by its music. Nor the tortures of Mithras

The word in the Bible is:

Threskos (g2357) thrace'-kos; prob. from the base of 2360; ceremonious in worship (as demonstrative), i.e. pious: - religious.

Pure Religion is:

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The Qahal, ekklesia, synagogue or church of Christ from the wilderness was only for Rest, Reading and Rehearsing the Word: Speaking the Word and MEDITATING (Mele) in the heart (not musical melody)

Warlick Quotes Lard

3. Let those brethren who oppose the introduction of an organ first remonstrate in gentle, kind, but decided terms. If their remonstrance is unheeded, and the organ is brought in, then let them at once, and without even the formality of asking for a letter, abandon the church so acting; and let all such members unite elsewhere.

Thus these organ-grinding churches will in the lapse of time be broken down, or wholly apostatize, and the sooner they are in fragments the better for the cause of Christ. I have no sympathy with them, no fellowship with them, and so help me God never intend knowingly to put my foot into one of them. As a people we claim to be engaged in an effort to return to the purity, simplicity, freedom from ostentation and pride, of the ancient apostolic churches. Let us, then, neither wink at any thing standing in the way, nor compromise aught essential to this end. The moment we do so our unity is at an end, and our hopes are in the dust.

Lard on the introduction of Instruments and Dancing Lard's Quarterly, Volume I March 1864

History in the majority of cases proves that the suggestions made by Brother Lard more than forty years ago were absolutely true in every particular.  It is not generally claimed that the organ is essential to acceptable worship, for all but the fewest of its friends say that we may worhip acceptably without it; but when once they declare to introduce it, it is brought in, and always at the expense of driving out of the fellowship the best, truest, and purest members of the congregation.... Brother McGarvey protested with tears and besought them not to bring it in, assuring them that he would not worship with it: but rather than have his fellowship they introduced the instrument and drove him, with other good members out of the congregaton.
Stark p.114 Here I am willing to rest the argument.  If any one will not accept theplain teachingof the sacred oracles I have given, he would not believe though one arose from the dead.  Of such we might say: "Ephraim is joined to his idols; let him alone."  Other proof I could givie, but no other proof is needed.  Here we close the arguement

How different are my opponents from Paul, who in his defense, did not set aside the law and the prophets, as do my "anti" brethren, but said: "after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and the prophets!"  These say: "Believing nothing written in the Law or the prophets."

Paul said that after the WAY of Christ he worshipped God: he did not say that he worshipped God after the Law of Moses.  Paul spends lots of time repudiating the Law as having any relationship to the human mind or conscience.  The WAY as defined in Philippians 3 was to worship god IN THE SPIRIT as opposed to IN THE FLESH.  We SPEAK that which is written for our learning but out singing and melody is IN THE HEART.
Luke 10:26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you,
that all things must be fulfilled,
which were written in the law of Moses,
        and in the prophets,
and in the psalms, concerning me.
Acts 24:14 But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy,
so worship I the God of my fathers,
believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
1Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses,
Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.
Doth God take care for oxen?
The LAW does not include either the Psalms or the Prophets.  This mistaken folly leads people into deliberately calling God a liar and sowing discord:
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Again, the Spirit OF Christ warned about the Lying Pen of the Scribes who kept the records of the Civil-Military-Clergy complex which God had abandoned to worship the starry hosts.

Again, Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: in Ezekiel 33 the hypocrites are self-speak preachers, singers and instrument players.

In Romans 1 Paul showed how the musical idolatry at Mount Sinia led to the worship IN THE FLESH promoted by Stark.

In Romans 10 he denied that the Jews were "predestinated" as proven by their fall from Grace because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

Righteousness by FAITH excludes any attempt to CONTACT or INFLUENCE God through music which originated with Satan to make people lie about Romans 10.
Rom 10:7 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise,
Say not in thine heart, Who shall ASCEND into HEAVEN?
(that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
Do not commit the unpardonable sin by CLAIMING to have the musical power to LEAD people into the presence of God!
Rom 10:6 Or, Who shall descend into the deep?
(that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
PAUL proves that the Israelites had abandoned any claim to PREDESTINATION at Mount Sinai. He also warned in 1 Cor 10 that this MUSICAL IDOLATRY was DEMON WORSHIP.
Dt 30:11 For this commandment which I command thee this day,
it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.

Dt 30:12 It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say,
Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?

Dt 30:13 Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say,
Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
Sending across the sea is mentioned many times in the literature: it refers to the Israelite worship of Dionysus who was cut up and sent across the sea. All was lost until his wife collected all of his body parts and brought him to life. She found all but the penis: so that is why the STEEPLES and PILLARS supply the missing parts in the Abomination of Desolation in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Temple had TWO of these overflowing with fertility.
Dt 30:14 But the word is very nigh unto thee,
in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

Dt 30:15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;

Dt 30:16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God,
        to walk in his ways,
        and to keep his commandments
        and his statutes
        and his judgments,
that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

They rose up to PLAY using a word quite similar to David's PRAISE or making self vile word:
"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

Dt 30:17 But if thine heart turn away,
so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away,
        and worship other gods, and serve them;

Dt 30:18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.
Stark p. 117 Again, it is said that instrumental music is fleshly and belongs to the works of the flesh.  Paul catalogues theworks of the flesh (Gal 519-21) as "adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcrafte...etc.  Wh said David's strainson musical instruments in praise of God were like those things Paul here enumberates.

Stark p. 140 But to the passage.  "He set the Levites in the house of the Lord." (2 Chron 29:25).  Whad does "in" mean?  Does "in water" mean close by, near, near to? Let the reader read 1 Chronicles 25:1 to see how men p;rophesy and in 1 Chronicles 23:5 to see how they  can praise God. I called his attention to the scripture, and now with an effrontery which is brazen, without giving the passge he says: "Read the Passage."

First, we can read that the house of the Lord is NOT the temple.  Bethel is the "House of El" but it was not a house.  God does not DWELL in houses built by human hands.  Whatever they built FOR the Lord was not commanded by the Lord and the Lord did not dwell IN a house. If a Levite went INTO the Holy Place used to represent the LOST Tabernacle they were to be executed by their "brethren."

[25] He set the Levites in the house of Yahweh with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet; for the commandment was of Yahweh by his prophets.

After the Musical Idolatry at Mount Sinai and the Levites had executed 3,000 of the "brethren" God ordained that under the Worship of the Starry host, the Levites were commanded to STAND IN RANKS and execute any godly person who came new.

Num 18:4 And they shall be joined unto thee,
and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation,
        for all the servic
e [hard, legalistic bondage] of the tabernacle:
and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you.

The sacrificial system was NEVER the spiritual worship but part of the WRATH DISPELLING curse imposed because of Musical idolatry.

Num 18:5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar:
that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.

Contrary to being a spiritual worship service, the sacrificial system had been imposed and if it were not performed it would bring down God's wrath as punishment due for NOT performing what they had been abandoned to.

Num 18:6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel:
to you they are given as a gift for the LORD,
to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Num 18:7 Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priest’s office for every thing of the altar,
and within the veil; and ye shall serve: I have given your priest’s office unto you as a service of gift:

and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

And, behold, I have given the
children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. Numbers 18:21

That also removes any modern cleric from imposing the tithe.

H5656 ‛abodah abodoh ab-o-daw', ab-o-daw' From H5647 ; work of any kind:--act, bondage, + bondservant, effect, labour, ministering (-try),

H5647 ‛abad

"Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation,
lest they bear sin, and die. Numbers 18:22

Now, you will not blaspheme by saying that God commanded that the Levites be the Musical Worship Ministers.

2 Chronicles 29.25 constituit quoque Levitas in domo Domini cum cymbalis et psalteriis et citharis secundum dispositionem David et Gad videntis regis et Nathan prophetae siquidem Domini praeceptum fuit per manum prophetarum eius

If the Instruments are David's then they are not God's: there are no musical instruments in the Law of Moses.  The Levites were under the KING and the Commanders of the Army: they made WAR and not WORSHIP.

2 Chronicles 29:[27] Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt offering on the altar.

When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain."
Christ in Jeremiah 7 DENIES that God commanded animal sacrifices or burnt offering: therefore, God COULD NOT have commanded the instruments which are said to be DAVID'S instruments. Christ also defines the Law of Silence.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. Jeremiah 7:21

21. Put ... burnt offerings unto ... sacrifices ... eat flesh--Add the former (which the law required to be wholly burnt) to the latter (which were burnt only in part), and "eat flesh" even off the holocausts or burnt offerings. As far as I am concerned, saith Jehovah, you may do with one and the other alike. I will have neither (Isa 1:11 Ho 8:13 Am 5:21,22).

For I spake NOT unto your fathers, nor commanded them
in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,
concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: Jeremiah 7:22

Some people are so simple that they might say that WE can be rightous AND burn innocent animals without tainting either.  They say, "If we add instruments we are STILL singing."

But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:
and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you,
that it may be well unto you. Jeremiah 7:23

God hath not said, thou shalt not sing and play instruments and pretend that you are worshiping Me.

But they HEARKENED NOT, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward, and not forward. Jeremiah 7:24

Shall we obey the Spirit OF Christ in the prophets or those who defacto calls the Spirit OF Christ a liar? Besides all of that nonsense, these people do not know that church is a School of the Word: qahal, synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness Who EXCLUDED "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" or any kind of self speaking.
