Plato, Euthydemus
[289d] On what proof do you rely? I asked.I see, he said, certain speech-writers who do not know how to use the special arguments composed by themselves, just as lyre-makers in regard to their lyres: in the former case also there are other persons able to use what the makers produced, while being themselves unable to make the written speech. Hence it is clear that in speech likewise there are two distinct arts, one of making and one of using.
I think you give sufficient proof, I said, that this art of the speech-writers cannot be that whose acquisition would make one happy. And yet I fancied that somewhere about this point would appear the knowledge which we have been seeking all this while.
[289e] For not only do these speech-writers themselves, when I am in their company, impress me as prodigiously clever, Cleinias, but their art itself seems so exalted as to be almost inspired. However, this is not surprising; for it is a part of the SORCERER'S art, epōdōn tekhnēs
Latin 289e:Plat. Euthyd. 290a and only slightly inferior to that. The sorcerer's art is the charming of snakes and tarantulas and scorpions and other beasts and diseases, while the other is just the charming and soothing of juries, assemblies [Ekklesia or church], crowds, and so forth. Or does it strike you differently? I asked.

Instrumental Music Intends to Destroy
The Disciples of Christ--Christian Church was always a distinct denomination to which Churches of Christ (Christian Baptists in 1832) as independents were never "unioned". In the mid 1800's most people could attend most assemblies and not be offended by the performance of rhetoric, singing, playing instruments and other attempts to make the invisible kingdom both visible, audible and costly. The Christian Standard as a marketing organization went to divisive extremes trying to force Churches of Christ to "Join." That would mean the Sunday School Movement supplied by the Standard in which musical instruments were first imposed with an agenda. And buying ONLY their authorized song book and imposing teachers independent of the local elders. There was no common grounds at the time other than men seeing godliness as a means of financial gain.
The Church of Christ continued John Calvin's Call for the Restoration of the Church of Christ: this would happen simply by removing everything that the Catholics had imposed over the centuries. John Calvin and all historic scholars taught the Regulative Principle which insisted that a church be Apostolic or faith and practice based on the Prophets and Apostles. The Disciples did not and does not rest on the Regulative Principle perhaps without ever knowing that when God breathed (spirit) into Jesus He became the LOGOS and the LOGOS defines the regulative principle of the universe. Alexander Campbell defining the Regulative Principle consistent with historic scholars and A Church of Christ thought that a Disciple of Christ should pay heed to what Jesus Christ commanded to be taught and observed in the Great Commission.
To think of 'Using Instrumental Music As Worship' fails to grasp that Jesus denied that the kingdom came with observation or Religious Worship Services' and defined the only reason for the assembly was to PREACH the Word by READING the Word for Comfort and Doctrine. "Worship Services" among the massed multitudes is defined as Threskia which is opposite to what James called PURE religion.
NEITHER STONEITES, CAMPBELLITES OR LATTER DAY LEVITES HAVE ANY CONNECTION TO THE SCHOOL OF CHRIST.
Jesus said that doctors of the law take away the key to knowledge and make merchandise of godly people.
One thing the Catholics never imposed was "congregational singing with organ accompaniment." Organs introduced by rich patrons in the Cathedrals at major Fair Towns was used for prosessionals, intermissions and recessionals. There was no congregational singing in the beginning because the Command was to "use one mind and one mouth" to "teach that which is written for our learning."
Because they were Old Testament scholars, the Campbells understood the pattern for the Qahal, synagogue, ekklesia or Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness. That pattern never changed for the godly people who attended Qahal which quarantined them from the Civil-Military-Clergy complex. It was because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai that the Jacob-cursed and God-abandoned Levites were turned over to worship the starry host which was the worship of the Starry Host.
MUSIC FROM MYSTEREY MEANS TO MAKE THE LAMBS DUMB BEFORE THE SLAUGHTER.
Clay Tablets 2000 years old when Moses was born and most recorded history warns that the instrumentnal sounds of wind, string and percussion are able to penetrate into all of the nerve endings and pleasure centers taking captive the God-given rational or spiritual nature. Furthermore, the collected opinion is that when people IMPOSE instrumental noises they INTEND silence the voice of God:
Aristot. Nic. Eth. 1175b.1
But things that are akin to things of different kinds must themselves differ in kind.
[3] A still clearer proof may be drawn
from the hindrance that activities
receive from the pleasure derived from other activities.
For instance, persons fond of the flute
cannot give their attention to a philosophical discussion [The LOGOS or Regulative Principle]
when they overhear someone playing the flute,
because they enjoy music more than the activity in which they are engaged;
therefore the pleasure afforded by the music of the flute
impairs the activity of study.
[ 5] And since our activities [of the flute] are sharpened,
prolonged and improved by their own pleasure,
and impaired by the pleasures of other activities,
it is clear that pleasures differ widely from each other. In fact alien pleasures have almost the same effect on the activities as their own pains; since, when an activity causes pain, this pain destroys it, for instance, if a person finds writing or doing sums unpleasant and irksome; for he stops writing or doing sums, because the activity is painful.
Aristotle on Politics 8
2. or whether we ought rather to think that music tends in some degree to virtue
(music being capable of producing a certain quality of character
just as gymnastics are capable of producing a certain quality of body,
music accustoming men to be able to rejoice rightly);
3. or that it contributes something to intellectual entertainment and culture (for this must be set down as a third alternative among those mentioned).
Now it is not difficult to see that one must not make amusement the object of the education of the young;
for amusement does not go with learning--learning is a painful process.
MUSIC MARKED A FALL FROM GRACE WITHOUT REDEMPTION AT MOUNT SINAI:
Of The Golden Calf "From time immorial music had been especially valued in the service of prophecy. Pliny the Elder gives us a report of the cult of Apis:
Exod 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings;
and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play
"In Egypt an ox is honored in place of the god. He is called Apis and he lives in isolation. If he ever goes among the people he stalks along while the lictors make way for him and throngs of boys accompany him, singing songs in his honor. He appears to understand what is happening and seems to wish to be adored. The throngs [of boys] sudddenly become inspired and prophesy the future. (Pliny, Natural History)
Consequently Apollo (Abaddon, Apollyon) was god of prophets and musicians and Pan was god of medicine, music and divination.
"Here singing served as a means of inducing ecstatic prophecy (speaking in tongues).
Thus the essential relationship between music and prophecy can be clearly seen. This relationship also explains why the expression for "making music" and "prophesying" was often identical in the ancient tongues. origen contra celsum 8.67.WORD DEFINITIONS IN LATINThe Hebrew word Naba signifies not only "to prophesy" but also "to make music." You will notice that it ALWAYS takes three words to command singing and playing and what to play or pluck. Psallo means pluck with the fingers and never with a guitar pick. Psallo outlaws guitar picks, flutes, drums or cymbals.
You despise God and Paul when everyone knew that you needed compound words to PLAY an INSTRUMENT: Different compound for every type of instruyment.

Origen Book VI,In the next place, as if he had forgotten that it was his object to write against the Christians, he says that, "having become acquainted with one Dionysius, an Egyptian musician,
If, now, it had been our purpose to treat of magic, we could have added a few remarks in addition to what we have already said on this topic; but since it is only the more important matters which we have to notice in answer to Celsus, we shall say of magic, that any one who chooses to inquire whether philosophers were ever led captive by it or not, can read what has been written by Moiragenes regarding the memoirs of the magician and philosopher Apollonius of Tyana, in which this individual, the latter told him, with respect to magic arts, that it was only over the uneducated and men of corrupt morals that they had any power, while on philosophers they were unable to produce any effect, because they were careful to observe a healthy manner of life."
AFTER THE FALL FROM GRACE BECAUSE OF MUSICAL IDOLATRY AT MOUNT SINAI TWO THINGS HAPPENED:
God turned the Jacob-Cursed and God abandoned Levites over to worship the starry host. Because they were a murderous lot they volunteered to execute 3,000 of the "brethren" who engaged in the Prototypical Worship Service of singing, playing instruments and playing with one another. Paul will prove that this was DEMON worship under the image of Apis the golden calf representing the trinity of Osiris, Isis and Horus: the universal meaning of father, mother (spirit) and son of polytheism.
The Pattern for the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness was the Qahal still used to denote synagogues as Schools of the Word.
John Calvin who called for a Restoration of the Church of Christ defined the Synagogue for the godly people.
Therefore, give the Campbells the UNIQUE CREDIT for restoring the absolute single-piece pattern for the assembly

Stephen was murdered for denying that any of the abandoned sacrificial system was commanded by God. In fact, the MONARCHY as the Christian Standard PATTERN for leading the introduction of instruments or "machines for doing hard work" into the Churches of Chist built upon the foundation of the Qahal or SKUL or school of the Word of God exclusive of "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" or self-speak preaching.

Therefore, those hearing a "spirit" tell them that God's abandonment is THEIR command to repeat the same pattern of abandonment may actually be hearing God tell them that they are beyond redemption.
Most of the massive sowing of discord got its first launch by Max Lucado not recognized as a Member of the Church of Christ. However, the AGENT who has been ELEVATED by ACU, Pepperdine and the NACC triad is Rick Atchley. Rick was known to be leading HIS church into using instruments but after more than a decade A SPIRIT told Him that he needed to DELIVER HIS MESSAGE. No one can hint that music is an element in the School of Christ from the wilderness onward without being led by an EVIL SPIRIT.

Good mortals might become daemons after death(Eurip.Alc. 1003; Plato, Cratyl. 398 B; Lucian, De morte Peregr. 36), and such as they were charged with the guidance and care of mankind(Plato, Laws 713 D; Plutarch, De genio Socr. 588 C).

This writer affirms that the division over instrumental music was within the Disciples of Christ: the NACC would not begin to happen until 1927
As a result of trying to, in the words of the Christian Standard, transistion churches of Christ into Christian churches, it became obvious that churches of Christ would be split as had the Disciples.
The Stark Warlick Debate on Instrumental Music is said to have sealed the separation in Henderson over the instrument.
This gave final evidence that any attempt at fraternal fellowship was not possible because the "unity" motive did and does mean "you give your property to us.
Trying to validate the Instrumental Sect, Stark collected all of the references he could find where psallo was used. Psallo has NOT musical content: it means to pluck or smite with the fingers but never with a plectrum. That is because Psallo meant to pluck a bow string to make it twang to send forth an arrow into the heart of an enemy. As it relates to SMITING a string of a lyre it carried the idea of shooting a love arrow into Apollo's male friends. ALL of the plucking a harp string points to older males plucking the harp trying to seduce a young male whose hairs had been plucked: he might have been emasculated as Paul warned.
If one "psallos" a harp string then it makes a "sound" but that does not make "music" but a percussion sound since "melody as tunefulness belongs to the 19th century."
M.C.Kurfees Origin of Instrumental Music.
M.C.Kurfees Instrumental Music in Worship
Most of the writers fail to define words in the text and understand that God excludes all of the performing arts and artists: Jesus called the Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. In the Ezekiel 33 version the Spirit OF Christ names speakers, singers and instrument players. In fact a hypocrite is a self-speaker, singer, player or actor.
The Christian Standard had been active in trying to "take Tennessee for the society much earlier." However, because Warlick virtually shut down the Christian Churches effort to take over Churches of Christ, the book by Kurfees had to be silenced.
See Comments from O.E. Payne
It is apparent that NOT using instruments was not acceptable and all of the effort was spent trying to fool better Bible readers. Payne lists more of the literary information. What the Standard and perhaps Payne did not know was that PSALLO has never in any of the recorded literature carried any musical content. Psallo means PLUCK or SMITE with the fingers. If you pluck a boy's hair you intend to mollest him. ALL smiting of a musical string carrye the idea of violence.
When Payne or others quote a passage they just quote the fact that psallo means to PLUCK. We will link you to some REAL literature to see that the plucking was not pretty. Furthermore, you ALWAYS have to NAME what is to be plucked.
Instrumental Music is Scriptural (and commanded)
By O. E. Payne, The Standard Publishing Company, 1921
This book was sent to a select group of preachers thought to be "translatable" by the Commission On Unity
Sending out copies with "return to sender" (in this writer's collection) pasted in front "That you may have the advantage of these facts and use them in the interest of truth and unity to 'the breaking down of the middlewall of partition" and for the restoring of fellowship between those that use and those that do not use instruments in the church, this book is sent out, which after reading please return to The commission On Unity, Nashville Tenneessee.Recently I received the following communication:
WEST NASHVILLE, TENN., May 1, 1922.
Dear Sir and Brother:
We sent you last year a copy of O. E. Payne's book on the church music question for your consideration and to be returned after reading. We have not yet received the copy sent you, so we are writing to [7] request the return of the same. Fraternally,
THE COMMISSION ON UNITY.
I wonder who appointed this Commission on Unity or who has any right to make suggestions as to how unity can be brought about or maintained. If this commission has been appointed by any one or by any church, I would like to know who or which, because that individual or church should know what this commission is doing to promote unity. But if it is a self-appointed commission, as I believe it is, I have as much right to offer suggestions as any one. If this commission is calling in O. E. Payne's book on the church-music question in order to destroy it, it is working on the right line, and I want to commend them; but if it is calling in these books in order to give them to others and thus continue their circulation, I suggest a change of name for the commission. It should be called "The Commission on Division" instead of "The Commission on Unity." I doubt whether one church in fifty in this country uses the instrument in their worship. If this book is circulated and read and changes no one, it could not assist in bringing about unity, because we already have unity on that question in most of the churches in these parts; but if it changes some one and makes him believe that he ought to have the instrument in worship, cannot this commission see that this would bring about division. The instrument would be forced into the worship by these new converts made by Payne's book, which would drive out those it did not convert, and thus we would have division instead of unity as a result of this work. Surely this commission could not hope to change every one on this question with this book and thus get every one wrong; but if it did not change all, but changed any, it would cause division instead of unity.[8]
Why is it necessary to have a commission in order to circulate O. E. Payne's book on the church-music question? Is it possible that those who are doing this work are ashamed to come out in the open and do it as individuals, or are they trying to make the impression that some church or association of men and women are behind them in their divisive work? We know it is not necessary in this city to have the instrument in order to have unity on the music question, for it was demonstrated in the recent meeting at the Ryman Auditorium that even those brethren who use the instrument can unite with those that do not and sing without the instrument, for they did it in that meeting. The only way to have unity on this question is to stop circulating such literature as O. E. Payne's book and cease to encourage such a commission as the one that has sprung up in West Nashville.
I cannot comply with the request herein made to return the copy of the book claimed to have been sent to me, as I have no recollection of having seen it, and no member of my family remembers anything about it; but I will agree to send a copy of M. C. Kurfees' reply to O. E. Payne's book, if the commission will agree to use it as an antidote to the Payne poison. If this commission is true to its name and is really a commission on unity, it will accept this proposition and will circulate this reply to Payne's book by Brother Kurfees as extensively as it circulates the Payne book; but if this commission is not true to its name, then the church where the individuals composing the commission hold membership should promptly withdraw from them, in harmony with the plain command of the apostle where he says: "Mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye [9] learned: and turn away from them." (Rom. 16:17.)
While the foregoing says nothing about a debate, it was really the foundation for further correspondence, out of which grew the Nashville debate on the church-music question.
The effort to slice off a few preachers trapped the "Commission" into a debate they did not want and were not prepared for. Understanding that Churches of Christ were already UNITED and did not need the forced introduction of instruments knowing that it would sow discord and make friendly assemblies impossible. In the words of Dwayne E. Dunning the wholesale efforts to DESTROY THE ROOTS have always sowed more discord and resulted in a tiny number of TRANSISTIONS, has decided on the present plot shuld be to LOP OFF A FEW BRANCHES.
It is a fact that there is not a command, example or remote inference of any of God's people engaging in congregational singing with instruments; and Scripture is filled with negative or even Satanic influences, one wonders why people are so urgent to lop off a few preachers and lather them up with favor and use them as examples of a large defection to the Instrumental Sectarians.
