The Progressive Church of Christ

When you plan to sow discord and claim that instrumental noise is a petty issue you know that is not true else it would never be imposed by a long effort to subvert your supporters.  From ancient tribalism to the Mormon church history is aware that you cease to function as a body when you grow beyond 150 members: the Mormons split at about 250 with the new independent congregation financed.  According to the Bible, the elders are the vocational Pastor-Teachers. A Church of Christ also has deacons who are THE vocational ministers.  Nothing that requires STAFF is built by Christ and will not be A School of Christ.

Moses was told how to organize the masses of people into sub-groups as small as ten families: at the time of Jesus hundreds of these small groups existed in and around Jerusalem.  The PATTERN was and IS:

INCLUSIVE: Rest (from ministers of god), Read and Rehearse the Word of God.  God in Christ has NO assemblies with a host of STAFF always called and known as PARASITES.
EXCLUSIVE: of Vocal or instrument rejoicing or rhetoric.

A Christian is a Disciple of Christ
A Disciple is a Student of Christ
A Student is washed with water INTO the Word or into the School of Christ.
A holy spirit or A good conscience is required to read BLACK text on BROWN paper.  Required says Paul in 2 Corinthians 3 will let you know that THE LORD IS THE SPIRIT and where the SPIRIT OF the Lord (the Word John 6:63) is present you can:
        Read the text so that SPEAK the Biblical text cannot be seen as a command to SING Fanny Crosby.
        Be able to HEAR the Text (only) when the direct command
                to PREACH the Word (only) by READING the text of COMFORT and DOCTRINE.
        The ONE PIECE PATTERN from Christ in the wilderness until He returns.

1Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers,

        Paul commanded Timothy to WORK so that he could
        minister food to the people on their way to a day job-maybe.

A Student will never ask the Professor if he shouldn't  hire a Praise Team as backup to his lectures.
A Student is a RECEIVER ONLY and does not say: "The law of gravity does NOT say that thou shalt not jump off tall buildings."
If you need to Progress BEYOND the LOGOS or Regulative principle which EXCLUDES everything beyond:
        --Speaking to Yourselves with "that which is written for our learning" or Scripture for Comfort.
        --ODEing and PSALLO in the heart (a Place) or Keep Silent 1 Corinthians 14
        --Because SPEAK is the opposiite of ODE
                       And ODE is the opposite of SPEAK
           Because ODE means enchantment and Sorcery
           Because PSALLO points to shooting literal arrows and shooting love arrows into your male friend
           Because Abaddon or Apollon is the LEADER of the MUSES
           Because the Muses and Graces were dirty adulteresses and real SHEPHERDESSES
           Because the Latin Spiritus (beyond WORD) is the spirit of Apollo
           Because Apollo was known to be the god of the Last Earth Age

    MANY (most) are called or invited but FEW (a tiny Little Flock) is chosen because Jesus came to CALL OUT the small number of Lost Spirits (pilgrims and soujourners on the earth). Jesus doesn't even pray for those OF THE WORLD because they are natural born and not capable, like the Viper Race, of being washed with water. Therefore, they will be threshed by the WIND (Spirit, Breathed) and gathered into a heap. The signs and sounds of God driving His enemies into "hell" or the "lake of fire" will be wind, string and percussion instruments: Christ says that Lucifer the singing and harp-playing prostitute brought these instruments into the garden of Eden.

In Ephesians 4 if you have APT elders they are commanded to eject the cunning craftsmen or SOPHISTS. Sophists are self-speakers for hire, singers, instrument players or actors.  Paul wants the ejected like the DOGS and concision in Philippians 3 because the LIE IN WAIT TO DECEIVE. That is their Purpose Driven Purpose.  That's why KAIROS or the Devil has come down to you because he knows that his time is SHORT.

1. If you spread false information about the historic Church of Christ which obeyed the direct command NOT to engage in "vocal or instrumental rejoicing or rhetoric" on the REST (never called worship) DAY.
2. Then if Bible readers object to your "stealing the church houses of widows."

4. Then, we know that this is not an Ekklesia, Syngagogue defined by the Spirit and the Campbells as A School of the Word; and Worship is Reading and musing the Word of God (only).
5. Those OF TRUTH speak only the LOGOS or Regulative principle which also excludes rhetoric, singing, playing instruments, acting or dancing. Christ said that those who do NOT speak the Word prove that THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM.
6. The purpose is to teach people THE WORD and they are then "washed with water INTO the Word or into the School of Christ." A Church of Christ if the Body of Christ is edified or educated spiritually by the Prophets and Apostles.
7. If you dip all of the world into a human institution not "planted" by God, then you make them four-fold sons of the Devil.  Jesus said that the Sons of the Devil "speak on their own." That is the MARK.
8. An institution built on human works and workers not related to Teaching the Word "as it has been taught" cannot be a Christian assembly.
9. Christ defining His REST both inclusively and exclusively commanded that a Disciple NOT spend their food money for the Free Water of the Word.  In Isaiah 58 Christ defined such a word as EXCLUSIVE of seeking your own pleasure (rhetoric, singing, playing, clapping, hugging or kissing) and NOT even to Speak your own Words.  If Christ paid it ALL Jesus left us a MARK by never commanding any religious parasitic roles and guaranteed it for the faithful by not commanded a Law of Giving of Tithes or offerings.
10. That deprives the School of the Word of FUNDING and therefore excludes "seeing godliness as a means of financial gain" which means to exclude any professional.

Christ in Isaiah 8 says that those who do NOT speak that record HAVE NO LIGHT IN THEM.
Jesus commanded that anyone SENT OUT teach that which He had taught: Peter makes that the prophecies by the Spirit OF Christ, the prophecies made more certain by Jesus and left for our memory by eye-- and ear-- witnesses. 2 Peter 1 says that this Prophets and Apostles as the only BUILDING or education material for the Church is not subject to private interpretation meaning further expounding.

From the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness, the Spirit OF Christ in the prophets (only), exampled by Jesus, commanded by Jesus with the ekklesia-synagogue words, practiced and commanded by Paul and taught and practiced by all historic scholars including the Campbells:

Church is A School of the Word
Worship is READING and MUSING the Word.
The command is to SPEAK that Word one to another,
BUT, Ode and Psallo are to be IN the heart meaning SILENT as in 1 Corinthians 14.

Contrary to what Paul would do:

1Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when YE come together [Synagogue],
        everyone of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation.
        Let all things be done unto edifying.

Paul did not say let all of these acts be done but only that which edified meaning EDUCATED.  In the "coming together" or synagogue everyone was silent while the reader PREACHED the Word (only) by READING the Word for comfort and doctrine. There was NO PRAISE SERVICE in the Synagogue by simple reverence and by command of Christ in the wilderness.

Musical instruments cannot EDUCATE:

A similar practice is attested in connection with the cult of Herakles-Melkart. According to Menander, as he is quoted by Josephus, the king Hiram, who was a contemporary of Solomon, rebuilt the temples of Tyre and, 'he was the first to celebrate the awakening of Heracles in the month of Peritius." (de Vaux, p. 247)

In an inscription from Cyprus, in one from Rhodes and in several from around the district of Carthage, there are references to important personages who bear the title Mqm"lm which we can translate as 'arouser of the god." (de Vaux, p. 247).

No one can interpret lifeless instruments which Paul equated to lifeless instruments.

The women just out of paganism would be the exclusive singers, players or speaking in gibberish or a foreign language so she could charge for the priest to translated.  Paul wants EVERYONE to come before God in silence because the Purpose Driven Purpose is so that "everyone might be saved and come to a knowledge of the Truth" and THEY WORD IS TRUTH.

It is clear that you do not know the meaning of a Disciple of Christ then you cannot know the meaning of a Christian. If you cannot grasp that Jesus DEFINED the inclusive and exclusive pattern for His REST then you will stumble ahead and IMPOSE the Laded Burden and Burden Laders which is defined as Jesus defined the Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites and in the Ezekiel 33 version they are mercinary self-speakers who can entertain, singers of lovely songs and players on musical instruments. Christ says that this MARKS hypocrites who have no intention of obeying God's WORD the Regulative Principle defined over and over in Scripture.

The serpent (Lucifer, Zoe, Abaddon) began as the Singing and Harp-Playing Prostitute according to the Spirit OF (a preposition) Christ. The Latin SPIRITUS focuses on Apollo, Abaddon, Apollyon. He has been unleashed from the PIT along with the  LOCUSTS who are the MUSES or SORCERERS.  Apollyon is the LEADER OF THE MUSICIANS.

While the Progressive word is common perhaps Jay Guin has been most instrumental in trying to SECTARIAN OUT those he considers to have progressed beyond the sacred page.  In the old sacrificial system--used as patternism--in the Greek language the instrument players made noise to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter: he was called the PARASITE. In the Book of Enoch referenced by Jude those for whom God will come in horrible judgement are specificially those who CAN BE seduced by mixed-sex choirs, musical instruments, drama, 'wearing of apparel' as seductive clergy garb (worn by the Levites). The holy Sethites who ignored the teaching fell into this musical idolatry, changed their minds but could never get back up. Knowing they were doomed they sought comfort by seducing as many other people as possible. The Church is built on the foundation of the Prophets and Apostles. I have commented on a paper by "Anon" to prove that no one was so uninformed that they could have accidentially missed the fork in the roat at Mount Sinai. I know of no preacher or scholar who understands what happened: "Doctors of the law take away the key to knowledge." Jesus called these same Scibes and Pharisees, hypocrites. In the Ezekiel 33 example He names speakers, singers and instrument players who have no role in an Ekklesia of Christ. It's True: Jesus never said "thou shall not be a hypocrite."

Paul is never speaking "dogma" where the theologians gather dogma (dogma includes music) which they can used to justify getting paid for the free water of the Word.  His most often problem is Jews who believed they were predestinated: Paul has to prove that they were not predestinated because they fell fatally because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai.

By looking at the rest of Paul's writings you will not fall into the trap of writing a sermon outline which turns around and bites you with a terminal virus.  The "progressives" are the most fatally flawed by lifitng proof texts and then not being able to see the rest of the story.

THOSE WHO IMPOSE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC BUILD ON THE FOUNDATION OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES. The first two reasons assert that under the Old Testament, God did not just allow instrumental music, He commanded and blessed it. For I spake NOT unto your fathers, nor commanded them         in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,         concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: Jeremiah 7:22 Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on John,   That the Pharisees puffed up unto strange boasting,         were wont to pretend that the Divine Word was with them and in them,         and therefore foolishly affirmed that they had advanced to marvellous wisdom,          the Spirit Itself will testify,          since Christ says by the Prophet Jeremiah unto them,                  How do ye say, WE are wise, and the word of the Lord is with us?                 For nought to the scribes became their lying pen;                 the wise men were ashamed, were dismayed and taken;                 what wisdom is in them? because they rejected the word of the Lord. For how are they not taken rejecting the Living and Hypostatic Word of God,          receiving not the faith to Him-ward,           but dishonouring the Impress of God the Father,          and refusing to behold His most true Form (so to say)          through His God-befitting Authority and Power? THE PROPHECIES BY CHRIST WERE FULFILLED BY JESUS CHRIST: JESUS AND PETER MAKES THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS THE ONLY TRUTH. Jer 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me,         The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace;         and they say unto every one that walketh         after the imagination of his own heart,         No evil shall come upon you.    Despise tthe Word of God of God and using your own words is: Blasphēm-eō , pf. A. “beblasphēmēka” D.18.10:—speak profanely of sacred things, “eis theous” Pl.R.381e; offer rash prayers, 1. Because Christ as Spirit spoke ONLY through the prophets. 2. Those who use use the pattern of the Lying Pen of the Scribes, in fact despise and ignore the SPIRIT message. 3. Christ in Jeremiah defines that as blasphemy Hebrew: H5006 nâ’ats naw-ats' A primitive root; to scorn; abhor, (give occasion to) blaspheme, contemn, despise, flourish, X great, provoke. 1.04.11 Bible 101a

Christ in Isaiah 23 (etal, etal) that if you teach something that the Lord has not taught then you are guilty of blasphemy.
That is spell CENI as far as what anyone is allowed to speak in the name of the Lord.
If you add instruments because you are not aware of many commands against it.
And the Lord has not commanded you to impose instruments when He comes to be our sole Teacher: tha spells BLASPHEMY.

BE AWARE THAT JOHN IN REVELATION AND MOST RECORDED HISTORY PROVES THAT RELIGIOUS INSTRUMENTS ARE THE MARK OF SORCERERS.

No on can stick a pin in a dolly or hold "workshops" to expel the demonisn of the Biblical church.  However, no one was so ignorant that they did not know that people could be "bewitched" out of their purse by the use of sex and instrumental music.

Progressive is regressive "back to Babylon" and especially to the Stone Movement which had nothing in common with the historic Restoration of the Church of Christ promoted by John Calvin and continued in England and Ireland before the Campbells and others came to America and gained freedom of speech and the press.

Progressive in the Civil arena means that the Constitution is a "living document" which changes with the times.

Progressive in the Religious arena means that the Bible is like the Constitution: those who are Apostolic or rest on the teachings of the Apostoles and Prophets for all times are mocked as "strict constructionists."  By looking at how "progressive" take snippets and make up their own Bible, we can see that progressive is almost always ANTI-Biblical.   This is the HIGH CHURCH patternism of the Disciples-Christian churches.

While claiming to RESTORE the church, Places like ACU and Lipscomb university see Randy Harris as a guide through the Grizzly Bear called the Bible. For Instance, Randy Harriss (ACU) has been the darling guiding blight of the "progressives."  In God Work he notes An You can see that tampering with mysticism (witchcraft) leads personal opinions to trump the direct command to teach that which has been taught: JESUS SAID DOCTORS OF THE LAW TAKE AWAY THE KEY TO KNOWLEDGE--FOR A PRICE, ALWAYS FOR A PRICE.

STRONGLY DELUDED PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY ARE RIGHT: AND THE SIMPLE MINDED SAY "AMEN."

The Crooked Race we are told to SAVE OURSELVES was the Male Symposium -- like a monastry :-) -- where they "got drunk on wine" before they do what all priesthoods do in the skolion music--maybe drunk on ignorance?

But all these discussions are missing the point. Here in 2Thes.2 we are seeing a restrainer of a horrendous entity of evil. We are looking here at a blasphemer against the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The hideous thing is a destroyer of all that is sacred. He has set himself against God's holy city Jerusalem. We have not seen such evil in a ruler since the days of Antiochus in 168 B.C. This is that beast demon spirit that will transform the peacemaking Antichrist into the abominably evil 666 Beast of the Apocalypse. an antichristian force of the ultimate climactic abominable evil. We have not seen such unrestrained evil before.

This person the prophet Daniel and the apostle John describe is a malevolent and godless personage speaking abominable and unheard of things. We are looking here at a person of ultimate evil.

"Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling to meet him, we beg you, brethren, not to be quickly shaken in mind or excited, either by spirit or by word, or by letter purporting to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God." (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 RSV) RESOURCE

Although he identifies himself as a preacher, he tells us he does a bit of light gambling (p. 40). He enjoys movies about Satan (p. 39). He laughingly tells us he lied (p. 61).

He concludes this section by saying, "What I've described to you is basically my postmodernism. That is, I am learning to make peace with a loss of certainty." In contrast, Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth" (John 8:32).

[12] Harris feels the historic evidence for Christ's resurrection is not compelling. He says "It is somewhere between Elvis at the 7-11 and the Gettysburg Address." He goes on to say, "The Holy Spirit is the continuing presence of God that testifies in us to the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (p. 79). I do believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of each Christian, but I am curious about the way and manner of the Spirit's testifying to Bro. Harris. Is it by dreams and visions, or a still small voice? Is it like the trumpet sound on Sinai or a nudge within? The Spirit speaks to me and every other Christian through the Scripture, which he guided chosen men to write (II Pet. 1:20-21). Any other communications are of uncertain origin.

[7] He has a low view of Scripture. He speaks of the Apostle John "toss(ing) in little throwaway lines..." "John does this stuff on the Holy Spirit that we don't see in the synoptic" (p. 77). He thinks Paul "made a mess of the Corinthian's situation." Of Esther, he says "there is this crazy book of Esther" (p.89).

"I am a postmodern, mystic, panentheist. Happily situated in Churches of Christ. And I am going nowhere. You can be a postmodern, mystic, panentheist and be perfectly happy in this tradition" (p. 95).

[22] The most disturbing thing about this worthless book is that its author works as a mentor of students at ACU. He works "mostly with Bible majors" (p. 31). This helps explain the growing number of congregations, staffed by ACU-trained preachers, that have abandoned the goal of being the Church revealed in the Bible. They have settled for being like the Christian Churches rather than the old biblical model.

THE FOUNDATION IS THE LIE THAT CHURCHES OF CHRIST SECTED OUT OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

TO THE CONTRARY, THE CHURCHES OF CHRIST NEVER JOINED THE SAME LOSTNESS OF THE STONEITES.

In The Christian Messenger for November, 1834, is quoted an article from the Millennial Harbinger (Campbell's paper) as follows:

"Or does he (Stone) think that one or two individuals, of and for themselves, should propose and effect a formal union among the hundred of congregations scattered over this continent, called Christians or Disciples, without calling upon the different congregations to express an opinion or a wish upon the subject?

We discover, or think we discover, a squinting at [14]  some sort of precedency or priority in the claims of the writer of the above article," etc.

It is well known that Mr. Campbell insisted upon immersion before believers were received into fellowship, to which Stone answered:

"We cannot, with our present views, unite on the opinions that unimmersed persons cannot receive remission of sins."

It is utterly impossible in the "fellowship cult" to accept the unbaptized as members meaning to participate and teach without TEACHING that Christ in the prophets was lying and that Jesus in fulfilment was lying about the commands to be baptized.

And though later on Stone came to believe in immersion in water for the remission of sins, there is no evidence that he ever made it a test of fellowship.  And Stone DENIED that he could unite with the Church of Christ.

We will show that the use of INSTRUMENTS along with SINGING is the clear definition of witchcraft or sorcery. The problem with the Progressive Church of Christ Sectarians is that they do not and perhaps CANNOT read the Words of Christ and define words within the context of the writings.  It is true that Paul said that until they were converted (Baptized) the Jews would not be able to HEAR the word PREACHED by being READ in the synagogue or read BLACK text on BROWN paper.

Liminality

There’s actually a technical word for the mess we find ourselves in: “liminality.” It’s a term from anthropology. It’s the condition of a human society that has just experienced major change. At times of liminality, people feel unsettled and make many false starts before finding a new status quo. This is from Wikipedia –

The liminal state is characterized by ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy. One’s sense of identity dissolves to some extent, bringing about disorientation. Liminality is a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed – a situation which can lead to new perspectives.

CHANGE SUCH AS PROMISE KEEPERS PROMOTED DISSOCIATION OR DRIVING INTO MILD SCHIZOPHRENIA.

For instance, the "men's movement" makes its appeal through the phallic religion of ancient paganism and modern phylosophy and everyone gets aroused and falls into line: "It is Noll's thesis that Carl Jung created a select, elite group of spiritual initiates that would lead the rest of society to redemption [Jubilee was always connected to redemption and atonement]. Jung was influenced by Eugen Diederichs who "called for just such a spiritual aristocracy to lead" post-war Germany. (p. 87) Diederichs also, believed that "being truly religious means being irrational" and that his calling as a publisher was to "push the irrationalist character of religion into the foreground" and assist in creating "a new mythos" or "mystique" (paradigm) for the spiritual reawakening of the Germanic peoples." See Rubel Shelly and Randy Harris using Narrative Theology to do a second incarnation to turn the loss of Grace because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai into a "paradigm" for worship and community. Those following Satan are reincarnated as "our spiritual fathers." "Jung was also influenced by Count Hermann Keyserling and was a prominent lecturer at Keyserling's Schule der Weisheit (School of Wisdom) which taught yoga and other esoteric doctrines. "Keyserling trained his metaphysically superior elite to lead the spiritual reawakening of the world. His goal was "to develop sages from fragments of men" and to develop "the true leader of the future"...the metaphysically "chosen" agents of cultural change in the modern world. (Noll. p. 94) "Was Jung a utopian? According to Noll, Jung hoped that through his methods of psychoanalysis that his "patients would not only heroically suffer psychological crucifixions and heal themselves, but afterwards they could redeem society as well by becoming initiates of this new secret wisdom of the ages... In a section on "Individuation and Collectivity"... Jung proposes linking individual spiritual development with the fate of humankind, using such statements as, "The individual is obliged by the collective demands to purchase his individuation at the cost of equivalent work for the benefit of society." (p. 232) Noll concludes, informing movements to "move you into the presence of God" through song, music and dance: "Through the techniques Jung taught his patients, which he expected them to practice well after therapy was over, they could access the religious wisdom of the ages. If they survived the initial ordeal without permanent damage, they could announce these insights from the ancestors and apply them to the rest of society, thereby redeeming humanity by leading it to a spiritual awakening. As these initiates, the elite corps of the individuated, can receive information directly from the collective unconscious (the land of the ancestors or the dead), they have the advantage and, indeed, the obligation, to proselytize this new doctrine for the benefit of society. (The Jung Cult: Origins of a Charismatic Movement by Richard Noll (Princeton University Press, 1994, p. 232-233)

If we are to repeat history, that nervous "end of the cycle" feeling will be acted out in a feeding-frenzy to establish "new programs" and to decide who will be the next "god-king" to lead us safely into the next millennium. This may look like signs of spiritual health but many observers note that it may be the "death rattles" of a Word-starved dying civilizations. Amos and Isaiah spoke of that music/starvation theme. Using the "wine" symbol, one observer noted that --

"Jingling, banging, and rattling accompanied heathen cults, and the frenzying shawms of a dozen ecstatic cries intoxicated the masses. Amid this euphoric farewell feast of a dying civilization, the voices of nonconformists were emerging from places of Jewish and early Christian worship ..." (Encyclopedia Judaica, 1971 ed., s.v. "Music")

In worship, this death-spasm may result because its "spirit" is "excitement" or "wine" rather than "Word" which gives life. By not anchoring faith in Christ's power to accomplish His task during His first advent the world might drug the church and its dying gasp might look exciting. This breakdown usually happens because --

"Based on the concept of an organic pattern in the life course of civilization, a morphology of history: the idea that every culture has its period of youth, its period of culmination, its years then of beginning to totter with age and of striving to hold itself together by means of rational planning, projects, and organization, only finally to terminate in decrepitude, petrification... and no more life. Moreover, in this view of Spengler's, we were at present on the point of passing from what he called the period of Culture to Civilization, which is to say, from our periods of youthful, spontaneous, and wonderful creativity to those of

uncertainty and anxiety, contrived programs, and the beginning of the end." (Campbell, Joseph, Myths to Live By, p. 84)

The Aztecs are a dead affect image for Rubel Shelly and Randy Harris.

Therefore, just as they tried to "relight the fires" in king David but couldn't prevent his death, on page 88 Campbell (like Amos) notes that the period of "dying" is always marked by a "wine-like" urge which "resurrects" the Aztec pattern. While these urges are often the product of the immature Campbell notes that--

"Yet there is a great religious fervor and ferment evident among not only young people but old and middle-aged as well. The fervor, however, is in a mystical direction, and the teachers who seem to be saying most to many are those who have come to us

from a world that was formerly regarded as having left altogether behind in the great press forward of modern civilization, representing only archaic, out-lived manners of thinking. We have gurus galore..."

Drugs and Wine as Evidence of Mind Control

People under stress often return to ancient religious forms and beliefs because the "gods don't work any more." The universal belief of these systems was that true religion is best illustrated by drugs (wine or ecstasy as at Cane Ridge) which forces the "worship services" into an exciting period which "meets my needs" and brings me face to face with the "god" who hides except at periodic festivals. The ritual literally forced the gods to do what they didn't want to do. In the symbolism of the gospel of wine, the ritual feeds the exhausted wine with new yeast so that it releases its energies and "turns us on."

Unfortunately, the "turn on" demands a bigger and bigger "fix." Campbell notes the same urge in most native religions. We note again:

"Now the first and most important effect of a living mythological symbol is to waken and give guidance to the energies of life. It is an energy-releasing and directing sign, which not only 'turns you on,' as they say today,

but turns you on in a certain direction,

making you function a certain way--whichwill be one conducive to your participation in the life and purposes of a functioning social group." (Campbell, p. 89).

"when the symbols provided by the social group no longer work, and the symbols that do work are no longer of the group, the individual cracks away, becomes disassociated and disoriented, and we are confronted with what can only be named a pathology of the symbol." (Campbell, p. 89).

"That the spiritualistic and the legalistic are not polar opposites but in fact correlatives has been one of the discoveries of this study... If the Spirit does not come to us freely in Christ then

we must go to him through some kind of spiritual achievement and

this means, ultimately, via law.

"One of the most striking aspects of the Scrolls is the coincidence in them of a 'legalistic' and a 'charismatic' piety." (Bruner, A Theology of the Holy Spirit, p. 229)

Signs of the Times Warning

Jeremiah connected the need for professional (professional worship music was always spiritual adultery) "musical worship teams" to the end-time period of a people. They were lost but didn't want to repent.

The solution, then and now, is to create artificial feelings of worship (sad songs or happy "praise" songs but no teaching songs) by the use of women trained to create a tranquilizing drug for the rational mind (endorphin) so their emotional nature could bear their lostness.

6. These opinions were anciently entertained, the universe itself being regarded not as a fabric but as a birth, a creation or genesis, and evolution. But the philosophers generally disapproved of the doleful rites and immodest speech. by means ofj which senseless men, being deceived, and their kingdom being taken from them, yet did not desist from the worship that they had taken up with.

To such an extent did they prefer error, on account of its pleasantness, before truth.

They also howl after their sacrificial surfeit, their soul from the depth, as it were by dreams, forewarning them of the punishment that is to befall such deeds of theirs.

MUSIC AS A DEMONIC ART

The idea of music as a demonic art implies that music is not considered on its merits alone, but points beyond itself and man to the demonic. Thus music can be understood as an invention and inspiration of demons, indeed almost as a demonic possession.

It may be interpreted as an imitation or image of demonic prototypes. The musician may be conceived of as a servant or assistant of demons. Demonic music may seduce or destroy human beings.

Conversely, however, demons can be influenced, conjured up, or exorcised by means of music. These notions are intimately related, although mostly antithetically, to those of music as a divine art [see next article]. Here too there is a characteristic connection with religion and the history of religion.

Of course, a precise definition of the demonic, e.g., by opposition to the divine, is not possible for all epochs. There are fluctuations in many areas. And only in cases where some antecedent division between (good) divinities and (evil) demons is already established can a corresponding dualism arise likewise in musical perspectives. Such conceptions had already been encoun tered quite early.

Like the ideas of music as a divine art, they extend from magical, via mythological, down to theological and philosophical, forms of thought and remain active at least into the baroque period.

Thereafter they fall victim in the course of a general process of secularization to an increasingly rational skepticism.

1. Primitive Peoples. The sounds of nature (thunder, water, wind, echo) seem to early man to be the voices of demonic beings, and a spirit is locked within the sounding instrument.

The narcotic ecstasy induced by music and dance is seen as superhumanly and demonically inspired. It leads to union with the demon world, or to participation in it,

or may serve as protection against it. Different kinds of music correspond respectively to different kinds of demon.

Certain demons have a special music pertaining to them, by which they may be influenced.

At all events, music and dance play an altogether central part in all activities of magic and witchcraft.

The power of shamans and medicine men depends on knowledge and mastery of the musical devices in this connection.

Similar magical-demonic elements survive in music, often more slightly modified, well into historical times. They may be recognized without difficulty even today in the concerted pealing of church bells, in the blowing of alphorns at the onset of darkness to frighten off evil demons, or even as a romantic evocation of atmosphere in advanced music, as, for example, in the Wolves' Ravine scene in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz.

Afro-America

West Africans reconstructed their native drums in the New World, preponderantly as cult instruments. Small sets of two or, more often, three drums of graded sizes form an integral part of Afro-American rituals and, in the Caribbean, also of voodoo dances.

Only the skins of sacrificial animals may be used for membranes among Afro-Bahians in Brazil, who baptize their new drums, preferably with "holy" water obtained from a Roman Catholic church.

Drums in Haiti are sacred objects and may even represent the deity itself: as such they receive libations. One type of bongo drum--there exist at least four of these--has been adopted by Western rhythm bands, as has the conga.

"Yobal (Jubal). (Note: Jubilee or "a blast of trumpets" is from Jubal which means "to lead with triumph or pomp.") and Tobalkin (Tubal-Cain), the two brethren, the sons of Lamech, the blind man, who killed Cain, invented and made all kinds of instruments (or metal weapons) of music.

"Yobal made reed instruments, and harps, and flutes, and whistles,

and the devils went and dwelt inside them.
When men blew into the pipes, the devils sang inside them,
and sent out sounds from inside them. (Note: the "familiar spirit" of the Witch of Endor was an old "lifeless instrument" made of an old water or wineskin).

Tobalkin made cymbals, and sistra, and tambourines (or drums). And lasciviousness and fornication increased among the children of Cain, and they had nothing to occupy them except fornication--now they had no obligation [to pay] tribute, and they had neither prince nor governor--

and eating, and drinking, and lasciviousness, and drunkenness,
and dancing and singing to instruments of music,
and the wanton sportings of the devils, (Israel: "rose up to play" and so did David in moving the ark from God's tabernacle to his)

and the laughter which affordeth pleasure to the devils,
and the sounds of the furious lust of men neighing after women. And Satan, finding [his] opportunity in this work of error, rejoiced greatly, because

thereby he could compel the sons of Seth to come down from that holy mountain. There they had been made to occupy the place of that army [of angels] that fell [with Satan], there they were beloved by God, there they were held in honour by the angels, and were called "sons of God," even as the blessed David saith in the psalm, "I have said , Ye are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High." Ps. 82:6 (In Rev 18 the craftsmen and musicians will go with Babylon the great whore into hell).

The Bible and about three dozen contemporaneous documents such as The Book of Enoch warns that if you COME DOWN to the sound of instrumental music you will NEVER be able to return. In many Biblical examples instruments which are mind-deranging weapons the sounds are the MARKS that you HAVE fallen.

If that's too rich for you, John called the rhetoricians, singers and instrument players SORCERS in Revelation 18:23. All Greek musical terms speak of enchantment, charming or sorcery.  If you USE music when you are commanded to assemble to teach what Jesus Christ commanded to be taught then you are playing the role of a demon; the PLAY or musical idolatry at Mount Sinia was DEMONISM (1 Cor 10)

The professional mourners or celebrators are called only when the "body" is already dead and you need a whole profession of musical performers to do religion. Like little David playing on his harp, they are -- in a perverse way -- doing the will of the Lord because the will of the Lord is that they be destroyed after they have rejected Him and called for a professional king or a professional musical worship team.
