STATEMENT AND PROOF-TEXT
Rubel Shelly: A Time to Be Like Other People
"First, Paul wanted people to know Christ so badly that he took the initiative to know and be like others as much as possible. He didn't set up shop and wait for them to come to him. He went where they were and talked to them in language they could understand. "I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some," he said. Just what does that mean?
"Paul was Jewish by birth but cosmopolitan in lifestyle by virtue of education and travel. As he moved freely in the Mediterranean world and contacted Jews and Gentiles, men and women, rich and poor, educated and uneducated, he respected and acknowledged everything he encountered that was either holy or redeemable to the Lord. Things that might not have been to his taste or liking, he nevertheless affirmed for the sake of having something in common with them in order to reach them with the gospel.
"What practical forms might this have taken for Paul? I suspect he went to barbecue socials with Gentiles, though he had been trained to be kosher all his life. And I know he worshiped with and even participated in ritual purifications with Jews long after he had left all that personally (Phil. 3:4b-9; cf. Acts 21:20-26).
This is leading to the instrumental music issue but we need to pause and look at the text which becomes the proof-text in detail. Look at the statement:
Rubel Shelly: Paul "worshiped with and even participated in ritual purifications with Jews long after he had left all that personally." (Phil. 3:4b-9)
The full text reads:
Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Philippians 3:4
Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Philippians 3:5
Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. Philippians 3:6
But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Philippians 3:7
Paul is contradicting Rubel Shelly. Paul said that he had every possible tool of the evangelistic or para-church method of evangelization. He could have continued to with and like the Jews and slowly, every so slowly, he could -- like a coward -- inject little bits of the teachings of Jesus. Then, you see, they would be so in love with Paul that he could teach many more the gospel.
The worldly evangelists would count up all of his ways of manipulating people by hiring a Musical Worship Facilitator. He could organize a band and get right in there with the gender-bent clergy in Jerusalem. He could sing, dance around, fling his hands like a girl and pretty soon be in charge of the whole temple clergy system. Then he wouldn't have to obey the Great Commission. He could hold grand Feast of Tabernacles, invite in all of the girlish performers, book sellers, poets, dancers and magicians just as the unbelieving brothers of Jesus insisted that He do. But Paul still honored "doctrine" as well as "gospel"--
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Philippians 3:8
Not like Dr. Shelly Says: And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law,
But like Dr. Paul says: but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Philippians 3:9
So, you see, Paul has said as plain as speech can make it: "I did not worship with the Jews and like the Jews still under the law. Rather, I counted all of the rights as a Jew as DUNG to worship "according to the way they call heresy."
He was not giving permission to add doubtful and divisive practices; he was saying that we should give up our rights and become nothings in the interest of the gospel.
So, Dr. Paul was right and faithful to his Christ and Dr. Shell is wrong.
Now, some details about where this sermon chooses to contradict what Paul has just written.
Always question people who begin a sermon with verse 3:4b:
What Dr. Shelly says:
If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Philippians 3:4b
What Dr. Paul really said:
Though I might also have confidence in the flesh.
If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Philippians 3:4
- I might have confidence in the flesh
if I didn't know that trust in the flesh is fatal.- I am all things to all people as a slave
to be able to preach the gospel - not to worship like the Jews or pagans.- Therefore, I absolutely crucify, murder and bury the flesh.
- Conclusions: Paul says the opposite of what Dr. Shelly uses as his premise for
taking liberty with the Word of God and with the conscience of others.See the Difference between half truth and whole?
The difference is between he trusted in the flesh and he might have done so -- but he never did.
I have said it before and I will say it again: when the "audience" is hyped up with theatrical performance music they cannot grasp the rational content of the sermon -- only the emotional content slips past carrying either truth or untruth. The "preacher" is also hyped up with the music and then self-hypnotized by his own performance. Therefore, the blind usually leads the blind.
Therefore, let's listen to a clearer, more rational interpretation of First Corinthias to set the stage for Philippians 3:4b:
"The ninth chapter of First Corinthians is a text that many Christian leaders grossly misinterpret and misapply.
Those pastors and evangelists who strive solely for church growth or mass evangelism tend to pull certain verses from this chapter out of context
in order to support their ungodly methods of church growth or evangelism.
Not only do they misunderstand and misapply certain texts from this chapter, but also they neglect to compare Scripture with Scripture to see whether or not their new methods are supported or rejected by other clear passages from the Bible." FOUNDATION Magazine
Now, some details about where Paul actually began.
The conclusion Dr. Shelly wants to reach is that he is justified in providing a "venue" for musical worship teams, Rockers, Rappers, Blue-grass; and have the authority be more sensitive to prostitutes and homosexuals.
Therefore, let's review Rubel Shelly's proof-text from Philippians but back up earlier than Dr. Shelly cuts in and see whether Paul meant that you must have a ministry to homosexuals and prostitutes, Rockers and Rappers (The Voodoo Factor). It is again providential that Paul removes the premise totally:
FINALLY, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Philippians 3:1
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Philippians 3:2
- That means beware of catamites or male prostitutes -- homosexuals.
- That means beware of evil workers.
- That means beware of the Jews -- the concision still defending the Law.
- Still wanna bet that Paul went ecumenical with the Jews?
This is a counter-command to refute the premise: Paul did not say "become all things to prostitutes or professional Jewish clergy still fighting against Christ."
While we should show compassion to all people, and I am sure that non-musical churches are just as compassionate about AIDS as those who love Rap and Rock, this passage from Philippians is used as proof text and we just need to back up far enough to:
- Understand that Paul did not advise a ministry to certain people.
- And Paul didn't use his Jewishness as an all things to all people.
He said that he might have trusted in the flesh which today would be Rock and Rap.This doesn't sound like Paul is providing a "venue" for theatrical performers, Rock and Rap musicians and Contemporary Christian Music (an oxymoron). Nor is he advising a ministry to the prostitutes or homosexuals although I am sure that he would show compassion.
He would not become a prostitute or associate with prostitutes in any "venue" to win them to Christ. If one wants to minister to prostitutes this would be a noble cause but it would not be a function of the church but of a social service organization. But if the 'collection plate' is passed for that purpose then it would be noble but ultimately very unfruitful.
We tend to expend our energies on compassion for the bodies but the gospel is directed to the spiritual nature of mankind whether slave or free, sick or well.
When Paul tells us to beware of dogs he was specifically concerned about the Greek form of uncovered prophesying by the women or effeminate men (1 Cor 11:5). Because the church in Corinth never listened to Paul very well, he could say beginning in 11:17 that "inside the assembly, your assemblies do more harm than good (NIV)."
And he was concerned about the use of instruments in connection with speaking in tongues after people came under the spell of those "who got drunk on wine" or music rather than "speaking one to another to teach and warn with the revealed Word of Christ."
The following pictures the musicians of the pagan world and in that day for a woman to stand over or preside over the flock preaching "with a tune" would be to uncover herself along with the usually-homosexual dancers and musicians:
The Bible is particularly sensitive to the pagan forms of "seeker" religions which used sensual practices to bring the people into their "churches." Bible 101a would reveal that Judas was one of those through whom God "spoke in parables from the foundation of the world" to those who no longer trusted the revealed Word of God. For instance,
Psalm 41 prophesied that Judas would not triumph over Jesus. Triumph is "making a joyful noise" with instruments positively outlawed for the assembly. The flute was particularly offensive in pagan religions because it was always a phallic "image" or idol and weapon of the male prostitute.
(Above) The Judas Bag was "for carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments. The "leopard skin" or "fawn skin" flute case is in the hand of the drunk and naked fellow on the left. The "Judas bag" is attached to the right side of the flute case.
- This bag, in the Classics, is always attached to a flute case.
- The player of the flute is often pictured as a naked, male prostitute.
- And he was devoted to "new wine." The "pole" which held the drunk piper up was often an ox-goad the symbol of some Promise Keepers looking for the masculinity. It was always a phallic symbol.
- The flute below is a combined idol of the male penis and the female vagina
Mocking Jesus: we piped but you wouldn't sing and dance. The flute was most often a reed "quavering or rocking in the wind."
Psalm 22 is the story Jesus taught when He cried "why hast thou forsaken me?" When on the cross, the message of Jesus was:
For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. Rev 22:15
For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. Ps.22:16
Keleb (h3611) keh'leb; from an unused root mean. to yelp, or else to attack; a dog; hence (by euphemism) a male prostitute: - dog.
Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. Psalm 22:20
Assembly is: Edah (h5712)ay-daw'; fem. of 5707 in the orig. sense of fixture; a stated assemblage (spec. a concourse, or gen. a family or crowd: - assembly, company, congregation, multitude, people, swarm.
In the wicked assembly, to say "priesthood" was almost universally to say "homosexual." For instance, if it is true that 5% of Americans are deviant then the Catholic priesthood is claimed to be four times the norm and that means 20%. A lot of Catholic money is being burned up ministering to AIDS behind closed doors. The same source notes that the protestant ministery also has its problem and the Navigators survey notes that 85% are feminine-oriented while 85% of the "audience" is male-oriented.
We repeat what Paul said before he was partially quoted:
FINALLY, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Philippians 3:1
Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Philippians 3:2
Conclusion: A ministry to homosexuals and prostitutes and Rockers (sexual intercourse) and Rappers and "Contemporary Christian" along with theatrical performers and performances can not help but lead the watching world to see the church as a social service rather than the body of Christ.
Secondly, the wicked assembly would be personified by the clergy in Jerusalem. And Josephus warned the Jews that the Levitical musicians presuming upon the priesthood had destroyed the nation once and would do it again. The Feast of Tabernacles of the time is now identified as a pagan fertility ritual where even the "elders" got into the dancing and musical act.
John warned of perhaps a recurring judgment upon "Jerusalem-like" worship when it appears that the end-time religion of the whore Babylon (not just in Rome) will be deprived of those things they "lusted after" including their music and musicians and "grinders" which was in the Old Testament to say "prostitutes."
Remember that when Israel rejected God's covenant of grace at Mount Sinai it was by His permissive will that they restored their musical worship of Apis or Osiris.
When Israel fired God and demanded a king, He sent the prophets from the "high places" as a sign along with the destruction of their wheat crop.
When they again rejected God, He sang them a song in Isaiah 5. Therefore, when God sends music it is both a cause and a sign of judgment or plague.
These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Revelation 11:6
And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Revelation 11:7
And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Revelation 11:8
The smiting was the "mark" and fittingly was administered by stretching the hide of the victime on a drum frame and then beating them to death with a "baton."
Tumpanizo (g5178) toom-pan-id'-zo; from a der. of 5180 (mean, a drum, 'tympanum"); to stretch on an instrument of torture resembling a drum, and thus beat to death: - torture.
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: Hebrews 11:35
Stephen incited his own "beating to death" by reminding the Jews of the warning of Amos 5, 6 and 8. There, the statue or image is identified and they worshiped with instrumental music. This was the mark of the beast or "demon" identified by the bull image or pedestals in Samaria. They were anti-Christ because in their cruel treatment of the "congregation" they also starved them for lack of the Word of God -- the Mark of Christ.
Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. Ac.7:43
This image became the imitation to replace the Word of God:
Tupos (g5179) too'-pos; from 5180; a die (as struck), i.e. (by impl.) a stamp or scar; by anal. a shape, i.e. a statue, (fig.) style or resemblance; spec. a sampler ("type"), i.e. a model (for imitation) or instance (for warning): - en- (ex-) ample, fashion, figure, form, manner, pattern, print.
The mark of the beast in Revelation is the same:
Charagma (g5480) khar'-ag-mah; from the same as 5482; a scratch or etching, i.e. stamp (as a badge of servitude), or sculptured figure (statue): - graven, mark
The TRUE mark of Jesus is faithfulness to His Word because He is God:
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Hebrews 1:3
Therefore the mark or image of the beast is Anti-Christ or anyone or anything who would mark a people with the opinions contrary to those of God in Christ. The beast marks one in the forehead or the mind, and in the hand or the power to act.
The false steward of God's "estate" can easily be identified:
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; Matthew 24:48
And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; Matthew 24:49
Smite is:
Tupto (g5180) toop'-to; prim. verb (in a strength. form); to "thump", i.e. cudgel or pummel (prop. with a stick or bastinado), but in any case by repeated blows; by impl. to punish;
figurative to offend (the conscience): - beat, smite, strike, wound.
But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6
Woe unto the world because of offences for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Matthew 18:7
And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. Mt.27:30
Explaining how Adam and Eve Fell:
Of the Transmission of the Art of Playing the Harp, that is to say of Music and Singing and Dancing.
Yôbâl (Jubal) and Tôbalkin (Tubal-Cain), the two brethren, the sons of Lamech, the blind man, who killed Cain, invented and made all kinds of instruments of music.
Jôbâl made reed instruments, and harps, and flutes, and whistles,
and the devils went and dwelt inside them.
When men blew into the pipes, the devils sang inside them,
and sent out sounds from inside them.
And Satan had been made ruler (or prince) of that camp Fol. 12b, col. 2. And when the men and women were
stirred up to lascivious frenzy by the devilish playing of the reeds which emitted musical sounds,
and by the harps which the men played through the operation of the power of the devils, and by the sounds of the tambourines and of the sistra which were beaten and rattled through the agency of evil spirits,
the sounds of their laughter were heard in the air above them, and ascended to that holy mountain.
In prophecy and in reality when the clergy "piped" they were real or implicated as "dogs" and their musical performance, even if it had honest intentions, was and is the participation in piercing the hands of Jesus all over again. The idolatry is identified as "the idolatry of talent."
But what if we become a male prostitute to possibly preach the gospel to a few male prostitutes? Isn't that what Paul meant? No. Whatever the motive, Christianity is not about ministering to prostitutes or even criminals who have earned their way into prison with crimes against humanity.
What is a dog in this language?
Keleb (h3611) keh'leb; from an unused root mean. to yelp, or else to attack; a dog; hence (by euphemism) a male prostitute: - dog.
While the clergy danced and circled Jesus because He would not dance and lament the effeminate dance while they played the flute, the watchmen like most watchmen were paralyzed with effeminate fear of the loss of their jobs and temple:
His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Is.56:10
Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Is.56:11
kinaid-ôdês , es, after the fashion of catamites, koura Sch.Ar.Ach.849.
A foreign witness of American Religion:
"Extraordinary instances met my knowledge of both clergymen and ladies making the grossest mistakes about conspicuous facts of the gospel history, while reading it in daily portions for ever.
It is not surprising that such a method of perusal should obviate all real knowledge of the book: but it is astonishing that those who feel it to be so should not change their methods,
and begin at length to learn that which they have all their lives been vainly trusting that they knew. Harriet Martineau Warning of the Clergy and women or weak men connection.
That is CONTEXT: Only by understanding this background can we possibly refute the claim that Paul would join the "ecumenical" worship service with the Jews or use the Lord's money which has legal merit only in charity and evangelism to "provide a venue" for these people.
Let's restate error sold as absolute truth:
Rubel Shelly: Paul "worshiped with and even participated in ritual purifications with Jews long after he had left all that personally." (Phil. 3:4b-9)
First, Paul did not say that he worshiped with the Jews. Rather, he said that he was a Jew who now worshiped God in the spirit.
That means: I am a cultural Jew (can't change that) but I don't worship with Jews and like Jews. Rather, I worship God in the spirit as Jesus demanded.
That means the exact opposite of worshiping with the Jews. Jesus placed worship "in spirit" which is in the mind and "in truth" which is devoted to His already-preached sermons and already-composed songs. The Jewish worship was purely of the flesh and purified only the flesh but could not make the conscience clean. Therefore, it was contra-gospel.
Psalm 41 shows that the "dogs" would surround Jesus like a herd of bulls. But Judas would not triumph over Jesus. Triumph means to "blow the pipes or to make a loud rejoicing sound to the Lord" which would automatically prove that they were not sincere listeners.
The Jews actually "piped" to try to force Jesus into the lamenting and dancing which would have "perverted" Him.
The Judas bag was for mouthpieces (reeds) of wind instruments. It is made up of "speaking in tongues" and "of the world." All of this was the fulfillment of prophecy:
Now Paul draws a distinction between the Jewish clergy and ethnic Jews who worship as Christians:
The Religious Jews still practicing pagan fertility rituals with external music
FINALLY, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Philippians 3:1Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. Philippians 3:2
For we are the circumcision,
- which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus,
and have no confidence in the flesh. Philippians 3:3
Paul could not easily become "uncircumcised" and he could never get rid of his Jewishness. However, he did not worship like the Jews (externally) but "according to the way" which was "in spirit" and not remotely connected with external, performance-driven rituals.
You can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship. Acts 24:11 [To prostrate self: sacrifices with instruments was not called worship]
Making vows was not worship: Paul went up to "crouch like a dog licking its masters hand." Paul fell on his face. To compare strutting around with flutes and drums acting like girls to Paul's worship is a case of moral and spiritual blindness.
And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: Acts 24:12
Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. Acts 24:13
But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets: Acts 24:14
This "way" of worship was:
Latreuo (g3000) lat-ryoo'-o; from latris , (a hired menial); to minister (to God), i.e. render religious homage: - serve, do the service, worship
Alfred T. DeGroot defines the church as those who have a flexible notion of the Bible changing to meet the needs of the age. However, he calls those who remain faithful to the Word as it has been supernaturally delivered to us as "SECTS." Paul could understand that because he did not worship like the Jews but like the heretics.
Rubel Shelly identifies those who reject instrumental music as sectarians. Paul could understand that.
I worship as a Christian and I would not engage in animal sacrifices or with instrumental music which had a rationale only in connection with Jerusalem and animal sacrifices. And I believe everything written in the law and the prophets but I am not a Jew.
And neither can the good doctor prove the false accusation that Paul worshiped like and with the Jews rather than in the way they call heresy. If you will note the chart above, to worship like the Jewish establishment of the time of Jesus or Paul would be to implicate you in deviant worship which was always fed with instrumental music.
So, far from commingling paganism, Judaism and Christianity, Paul was usually "despised and rejected of men" because Christianity was so counter-cultural that it was identified as heresy. Seeking the affirmation and applause of the community is a fatal error and this is not what Paul taught.
So, Paul really contradicts Rubel Shelly. Flat and solid.
Now, if Paul was a body worshiper he was a Jew's Jew with all of the credentials. He was the best model God could find of a good Jew:
Though I might also have confidence in the flesh.
If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more: Philippians 3:4
Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Philippians 3:5
Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. Philippians 3:6
Paul had the pedigree and the degrees. His "work record" showed just how good he was at an early holocaust. However, rather than reading the books and going to the university to conform to his culture, Paul counted all of that as what the bull leaves on the lawn when the fence breaks.
Why would Paul risk his salvation by conforming to his total culture?
But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Philippians 3:7
Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Philippians 3:8
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law,
but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Philippians 3:9
What Paul says is that he could not be an "all things" seeker and still hang onto the gospel. Perhaps this is why the "core gospel" has been trimmed down to seven facts about Jesus.
First. Paul begins before verse 3:4b as the proof-text to refute the notion that he would share his pulpit with one who still worships like the law of Moses. In this preamble, he specifically proves that he would not share his pulpit with a preacher with AIDS if he got AIDS in the old fashioned way.
Second, Paul might have or had the right to be a Jew's Jew.
Third, but Paul counted all of his total history and culture as dung in order to know Christ and be a faithful gospel preacher. That is, Paul gave up all of the cultural advantages from knowing the nature of Jewish and pagan society. This is the opposite of what Dr. Shelly claims.
Modern Application
Premise: we need to be an all-things church because Paul said so.
But: Paul did not say that Paul worshiped with the Jews! His preamble would exclude the Judaizing teachers, prostitutes and homosexuals.
Conclusion: We have Paul's positive denial that we should turn "church" into social outreach or a venue for the most destructive, anti-Christian, sexual music known to mankind.
In Part One: Dr. Shelly used 1 Corinthians 9:19-22 and claims: First, Paul wanted people to know Christ so badly that he took the initiative to know and be like others as much as possible.
We showed that this is not true and is not based on the whole context.
In Part Two: Dr. Shelly at Woodmont Hills Family of God has used Philippians 3 to prove that Paul worshiped with and like the Jews. However, we showed that Paul stated just the opposite and that the verses Dr. Shelly did not quote implicates Judaizers and homosexuals as those whom a believer should beware of.
In Part Three: Dr. Shelly at Woodmont Hills Family of God uses Acts 21:20-26 to prove that Paul worshiped with and like the Jews when he assisted several men in taking vows at the temple. We will show that he proof-texts and therefore misses the chance to "preach the gospel" about trying to become all things to all people in Dr. Shelly's way.
