Water Baptism, Cornelius, Acts 10:, the Holy Spirt

For those rejecting baptism as part of God's plan for saving mankind, the mass of evidence must be intentionally and institutionally defeated by looking for a legalistic loophole.  While Jesus as the Christ of God made the remission of our sins rest on obedience in baptism to receive the GIFT of the Holy Spirit, the story of Cornelius is used to prove that one might be saved by a direct operation of the Holy Spirit.  This comes from those who perceive the "Holy Spirit as a separate being" as replacing the "dispensational" Jesus. This two-dispensations is well documented in accounts of Gnosticism. The Holy Spirit according to Paul is the Mind of Christ: that is because the Spirit is the Spirit OF Christ: John said that the name of the "another Comforter" where Jesus said "I will come to you" is "Jesus Christ the Righteous."

The concept of "believer's baptism" [saved by faith first] is an ancient and modern Gnostic concept that Paul taught another gospel based on "faith only" and that the dispensational cross of Jesus has no value to Gentiles. Perhaps to repudiate that, God specificially sent Peter a real "Jew" to preach the SAME Gospel to Gentiles which demanded the same baptism before James considered them TURNED or converted to Christ.
"Converted" and "baptized" are equated in several places and by the definition of "conversion."

Consistent with the remnant theory, we should grasp that the majority of people will claim the rights of being a Christian while being an unbeliever or an apistos meaning mortal enemies of God. They devote their life and money to trying to defeat Jesus Christ.  Jesus said "He that believeth AND is baptized SHALL be saved." Those who "believeth not" that direct command are called APISTOS which is the opposite of believeth.

The eunuch was a student of Isaiah and his version was likely identical to that found at the Dead Sea. In several places it is prophetic of baptism. Philip would have had to speak of baptism before the "good news" had any meaning. However, the eunuch would have known about baptism from severaly places in Isaiah--written by the Spirit of Christ--as well as in Malachi quoted by Mark as the beginning place or foundation for the gospel.

THE PROPHECY BY THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST

Isa 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord:
though your sins be as scarlet,
        they shall be as white as snow;
        th
ough they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Jeremiah 4:14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness,
        that thou mayest be saved.
How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. Je.4:30

They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. Lam.4:5

Isa 1:19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Isa 1:20 But if ye refuse and rebel
,
ye shall be devoured with the sword:
or the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah also defines how we should save ourselves from a crooked generation of religionists.

Isa 1:22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:
Isa 1:23 Thy princes are rebellious,
        and companions of thieves:
        every one loveth gifts,
        and followeth after rewards:
        they judge not the fatherless,
neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

Because people deny that the ending of Mark was in the original texts, it is important to see that it is identical to the Great Commission which was to go out to all NATIONS which includes Gentiles:
Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, [kosmos]
and teach all nations, and preach the gospel to every creature.
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where,
and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world [aion]. Amen. the Lord working with them, and
confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
Peter will make it very clear that in this period of time the Spirit OF Christ would be with the apostles to CONFIRM the word.  Once a "constitution" is confirmed it never needs reconfirming.  The Last Will and Testament left the Apostles as the Testators of that will: once it was put into effect it serves to regulate the heirs for all future periods of time.

However, the Lord was working with them for that age to guide them into all truth:
165. aion, ahee-ohn´; from the same as 104; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):
Aion is defined by the context: the "abiding" would begin after Christ ascended and then returned in Spiriit at Pentecost.  It would last until the last apostle had died after they had completed their work of making the face-to-face message from God available just as the writing prophets wrote by the Spirit of Christ. The abiding meant that they had the power which came on the day of Pentecost when the kingdom came with power (Mark 9:1).
Psa 68:18 Thou hast ascended on high,
        thou hast led captivity captive:
        thou hast received gifts for men;
        yea, for the rebellious also,
that the Lord God might dwell among them.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,
        that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,
because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John said that the Comforter was "Jesus Christ the Righteous."
We know that the historic church continued to make disciples by baptizing and teaching, but, the supernatural signs which VALIDATED the Word and the Apostles ceased when the church had what it considered the APOSTOLIC WITNESS. The historic church thought of apostolic succession as the work of the presbyters to make sure that NOTHING but the Apostolic and Prophetic record was used for faith and practice;.
2Pet. 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Jude 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
As the Spirit of Christ worked with the prophets to give great details about the coming of the church, He worked with the apostles to lay the foundation and begin adding disciples.  After that adequate work of God in Christ, all people becomes a disciple by teaching, baptizing and a life of teaching.  It is not required to define the fate of those whom Jesus called APISTO or unbelievers.

Cornelius wants Peter to tell him WORDS by which he might be saved: Peter commanded him to be baptized. Therefore, it is not being faithful to Jesus Christ to assert that Cornelius was saved by "speaking his OWN words."  Look further to the direct parallel between the "Great Commission," Mark 16 and what Peter taught to Cornelius. Remember that Peter's commission ran to the "end of the age" and all supernatural signs were by powers put into the hands of the apostles whose tenure ended with their recording Scripture and their death.
2Pet. 1:14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle,
even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
2Pet. 1:15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease
to have these things always in remembrance
Look at the meaning of words Mark used:
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
If you are not SAVED then you are by simple definition DAMNED. Believeth is the word:

A. pepisteukein Act.Ap.14.23 : ( [pistis] ) :--trust, put faith in, rely on a person, thing, or statement, tini Hdt.1.24; tôi logôi Id.2.118,  2. comply, OPPOSITE to APISTEO

but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Believeth not does not mean from a lack of evidence: it means that one "rejects the counsel of God by refusing to be baptized. Therefore, if you do not believe that "he that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved" then Jesus defines you as in revolt:

Apist-eô to be apistos, and so, I. disbelieve, distrust, was distrusted, i.e. no one could be sure of knowing,

II. = apeitheô, disobey, to be DISOBEDIENT, they refuse to comply, They are not to be trusted, and so of persons and their acts, not trusty, faithless, Act., mistrustful, incredulous, suspicious, Treacherously, cause to REVOLT from. also kleptô meaning: seize or occupy secretly, effect or bring about clandestinely, gamon, to be 'smuggled in' get rid of imperceptibly

THE SUPERNATUAL SIGNS WOULD BE ENABLED BY THE APOSTLES

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe;
        In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Mark 16:19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven,
and sat on the right hand of God.
Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where,
        he Lord working with them,
and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
Acts 2:43 And fear came upon every soul:
and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

Therefore, in the case of Cornelius the outflow of words (spirit) was caused by Peter and was not a sign that Cornelius had been saved without even confessing the NAME of Jesus Christ in baptism.
Harold Bloom defines the American church as "distinctly gnostic with no connection to historic Christianity." I will link Irenaeus Against Heresies Book III where he defines this false religionism including their rejection of Baptism

Such enemies also deny that Jesus was crucified for them but only for the Jews: the concept of believer's baptism insists that Jesus die again for them or that they must become Christ and die for their own sins. That means that they are saved BEFORE they repent, confess or are baptized. Therefore, the charge is doubly dangerous: They deny that the Jesus dispensation was for the Gentiles and they call all inspired writers liars by insisting that they are special and are saved just by believing.  Because this class are also often Calvinistic, they misrepresent Calvin and insist that they cannot even believe unless God personally infuses faith imto them.  In short, any movement on their part in response to a direct command even from Jesus would be legalism and therefore jeopardize their predestinated state. However, John Calvin says that God has performed his "direct operation of the Spirit" by giving us the Scriptures and people to teach it. Furthermore, he said that people who heard the Spirit outside of the Word were fanatics.

The same Gospel was to be preached to all people on equal terms beginning in Jerusalem and spreading out into all of the nations or Gentiles.  The apostles worked on "Jesus's timetable." When the time was right God alerted Cornelius--a God fearing Gentile-- and also to Peter.  Peter was convinced through supernatural signs that there were no unclean people or animals: all are now purified by the faith of Jesus Christ.

CORNELIUS COULD NOT BE SAVED UNTIL HE WAS BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.

The Great Commission to teach, make disciples and continue to teach what Jesus had taught was in the name-singular-of Jesus the Christ of God.  Jesus had all of the authority of Father (thought), Spirit (breath) and Son (Words) of the invisible, inaudible God. That is why Peter always baptized IN THE NAME of Jesus Christ:

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

When Cornelius is commanded to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ it never had any other meaning that for or in order the remission of sins. Simple faith never remits sins: having the Spirit cause you to speak words does not save you: there are many examples to prove that the "pouring of the Holy Spirit" was making God's Word known by speaking words:

And the spirit (7307) of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Isaiah 11:2

And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: Isa 11:3

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God:
for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. John 3:34

Turn you at my reproof: behold,
I will pour out my spirit unto you,
I will make known my words unto you. Proverbs 1:23

When Cornelius spoke in a language the doubting Jews understood he was praising God and not engaging in some kind of charismatic effort. After the gospel was preached, he still had to "call on the name of Jesus Christ" by being baptized.

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel,
that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead,
even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Acts 4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders,
which is become the head of the corner.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other:
for there is none other name under heaven given among men,

whereby we must be saved.
Cornelius did not know about Jesus Christ until Peter taught him.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD

No one is saved by God pouring out of His Spirit which caused everyone to speak HIS Words.  To be saved one has to CONFESS the Name of Jesus as the Christ the Son of God:
Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture,
        and preached unto him Jesus.
Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water:
and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what
doth hinder me to be baptized?

Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.
And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still:
and they went down both into the water,
both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Into is EIS which is ALWAYS into or unto something: they both wend INTO the Wather and Philip was Baptized ONLY in the Name of Jesus Christ to be Saved.

In the Dead Sea version of Isaiah we read what the eunuch probably held in his hands:

7. (3) And it shall be that the remnant in Zion and those remaining in Jerusalem shall be called holy; all the ones written
8. among the living in Jerusalem. ( 4) When the Lord has washed the excrement of the daughters of Zion and the blood of

Zec.3:4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

Rachac (h7364) raw-khats'; a prim. root; to lave (the whole or a part of a thing): - bathe (self), wash (self).

Church history agrees

Irenaeus Book III 8. But again: Whom did Philip preach to the eunuch of the queen of the Ethiopians, returning from Jerusalem, and reading Esaias the prophet, when he and this man were alone together?

Was it not He of whom the prophet spoke: "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb dumb before the shearer, so He opened not the month? "

"But who shall declare His nativity? for His life shall be taken away from the earth." [Philip declared] that this was Jesus, and that the Scripture was fulfilled in Him; as did also the believing eunuch himself:

and, immediately requesting to be baptized, he said, "I believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God." This man was also sent into the regions of Ethiopia, to preach what he had himself believed, that there was one God preached by the prophets, but that the Son of this [God] had already made [His] appearance in human nature (secundum hominem), and had been led as a sheep to the slaughter; and all the other statements which the prophets made regarding Him.

CORNELIUS BEGINNING IN ACTS 10

Acts 10:33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

What had Peter himself been told about how to be saved.

The OBJECT here was not a one step process for the remission of sins but to enable a supernatural sign which would silence the doubting Jews who thought that God WAS a respector of persons and races:

Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said,
Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

Acts 10:35 But in every nation
        [1]he that feareth him
        [2] and worketh righteousness,
        [3] is accepted with him.
Acts 10:36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel,
preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)

That means that they were justified which means NOT ceremonially impure as the doubting Jews contended.

Acts 10:37 That word, I say, ye know,
which was published throughout all Judaea,
        and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power:
        who went about doing good,
and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

And Daniel the prophet says, "The mystery which the king asks,

it is not in the power of the wise, the Magi, the diviners, the Gazarenes, to tell the king; but it is God in heaven who revealeth it." [Dan. ii. 27, 28.]

John Gill Daniel 2:27

Ver. 27. Daniel answered in the presence of the king,.... Boldly, and without fear: and said, the secret which the king hath demanded: so he calls it, to show that it was something divine, which came from God,

and could only be revealed by him, and was not to be found out by any art of man:

cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers show unto the king;

this he premises to the revelation of the secret, not only to observe the unreasonableness of the king's demand upon them, and the injustice of putting men to death for it; but that the discovery of the whole might appear to be truly divine, and God might have all the glory; it being what no class of men whatever could ever have made known unto him.

The last word, rendered "soothsayers" {u}, is not used before; the Septuagint version leaves it untranslated, and calls them Gazarenes; and so Saadiah says, it is the name of a nation or people so called; but Jarchi takes them to be a sort of men that had confederacy with devils: the word signifies such that "cut" into parts, as the soothsayers, who cut up creatures, and looked into their entrails, and by them made their judgment of events; or as the astrologers, who cut and divide the heavens into parts, and by them divide future things; or determine, as Jacchiades says, what shall befall men; for the word is used also in the sense of determining or decreeing; hence, Saadiah says, some interpret it of princes, who by their words determine the affairs of kingdoms: by some it is rendered "fatalists" {w}, who declare to men what their fate will be; but neither of these could show this secret to the king.

There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; Daniel 5:11

"The necromancer or soothsayer gained their power through magical incantations. The sound of brass, pipe or string imitated the music of the seven heavenly spheres. As a result,

the gods were forced to give material and sensual blessings." Enuma Elish III.101; IV. 1-26, 91 and other Near Eastern Manuscripts.

Ashshaph (h825) ash-shawf'; from an unused root (prob. mean. to lisp, i. e. practise enchantment); a conjurer: - astrologer.

The Soothsayer was a "Gazarene":

Gezar (h1505) ghez-ar'; corresp. to 1504; to quarry; determine: - cut out, soothsayer.

Gazar (h1504) gaw-zar'; a prim. root; to cut down or off; (fig.) to destroy, divide, exclude or decide: - cut down (off), decree, divided, snatch.

Before the true writing prophets who opposed the superstitious paganism especially as adopted by Israel, they were previously know as seers or star GAZERS.

Chozeh (h2374) kho-zeh'; act. part. of 2372; a beholder in vision; also a compact (as looked upon with approval): - agreement, prophet, see that, seer, [star-] gazer.

Salvation is not just a punched ticket to heaven: salvation by obeying in baptism caused God to add us to the church. According to Peter in Acts 2 you must "save yourselves FROM that crooked generation" specificially of the false Jews or Edomites whom John called a generation of vipers not capable of being baptized.

Acts 10:39 And we are witnesses of all things
which he did both in the land of the Jews,
and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
Acts 10:40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
Acts 10:41 Not to all the people,
but unto witnesses chosen before of God,
even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
Acts 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people,
and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

Peter did not say that everyone who believed HAS BEEN saved but:

[2] shall receive remission of sins.

Miriam and the Levites performed "prophesying" which was musical soothsaying. I. one of the first, of the first rank, chief, principal, excellent, remarkable (class.): “primarius parasitus,”

The baptism was of WIND and FIRE which was a sign of the end of the Unclean Spirits performing a SIGN but, as in the wilderness, they would not do it again.  This was a SIGN to the doubting Jews of the end.

ZECHARIAH WARNS NOT TO SEEK THESE SIGNS AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN PERFOORMED TO FULFILL PROPHECY.

And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy,
then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him,

Thou shalt not live;

THIS IS THE EVIL SPIRIT WHICH IS MARKED AS HAVING PAST.

"raved, lost consciousness and rational ability, chanted, mutilated themselves and exhibited all kinds of abnormal behavior... these Nebhiim are to be identified with the prophets of Baal who exhibited such frenzied conduct on Mount Carmel (1 Sam. 10), the schools of the prophets under Elijah and Elisha (2 Ki. 2-6), and the band of four hundred prophets who were attached to King Ahab's court (1 Ki. 22)."

"All these texts point, explicitly or implicitly, to the fact that the dance had a musical accompaniment. Even though the Bible makes no mention of it we must assume that the movements of the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel were made with an accompaniment on certain musical instruments... (de Vaux, p. 242).

"There is an obvious satirical intent in the biblical story and we could find no better illustration of a similar attitude than a rather curious bas-relief in the Museo delle Terme in Rome which derides a ceremony of Isis. "In front of a row of images of the gods, men and women are dancing with grotesque contortions; their knees are all bent their heads thrown back and their arms upraised; they are holding castanets or the double flute.clapping their hands." (de Vaux, p. 242).

The only people able to be saved as the first advent remnant are those----

Rom. 11:4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal
CORNELIUS WANTED PETER TO PREACH WHAT HE HAD BEEN TOLD

Peter did not say that believing brought remission of sins: he said that for the believers remission of sins would come only through His name. What had Jesus command the apostles? Again, looking backward:

Matt. 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee,
into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Matt. 28:17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
Matt. 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,
All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Matt. 28:19 Go ye therefore,
        and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Matt. 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Those who believe that Cornelius was baptized without baptism have to make Peter tell a lie in 1 Peter 3:21 where he said "baptism does now save us." It saves us because baptism is the HOW we call upon the name of the Lord "requesting" that He give us A good conscience which is A holy spirit: our spirit being made holy.  Again, the Holy Spirit named Jesus of Nazareth had appeared to Paul but this did not save him.  He was told:
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise,
and be baptized, and wash away thy sins,
calling on the name of the Lord.
Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words,
the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes
......... Jesus Christ hath been
......... evidently set forth, crucified among you? Galatians 3:1

This only would I learn of you,
......... Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law,
......... or (Received ye the Spirit) by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:2

Are ye so foolish?
......... having begun in the spirit (mind),
......... are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:3
......... Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. Galatians 3:4

He (Paul) therefore that
ministereth to you the Spirit,
and (he that) worketh miracles among you,
doeth he it by the works of the law, or
by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:5
Jesus said "My words are Spirit and they are life" (JOhn 6:63) and when one fills up with "spirit" (Ephesians 5) one is filled with the "words of Christ" (Colossians 3) or with "that which is writte" (Romans 15).  Therefore, because word and spirit (mind) are often enterchangable, when the Spirit embraces one the result is that words are made audible. There is no hint that a third member of the Godhead fell down on top of this group.
A. What happened to Cornelius as reported by Peter:

Acts 11:12 And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting.
Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:
Acts 11:13 And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house,
        which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
Acts 11:14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Acts 11:17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us,
who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying,
Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Salvation is not in this experience: Peter would tell them WORDS by which they would be saved. He was to COMMAND something that Cornelius must do.

B.  This was similar but NOT what happened to the apostles:

2470. isos, ee´-sos; probably from 1492 (through the idea of seeming); similar (in amount and kind):  agree, as much, equal, like.

That means that the baptism of the Holy Spirit happened only to the Apostles. In another sense, those who heard their words received the "Spirit OF Christ" as certainly as if by a direct operation.

C.  Here is what happened to the apostles in the upper room on Pentecost:
Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind
and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire,
and it sat upon each of them.
Acts 2:4 And they were
all filled with the Holy Ghost,
and began to speak with other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Peter and the eleven spoke in all of the tongues or languages of the pilgrims from all over the world. This was a gift for communicating to others in THEIR LANGUAGE. This, too, was a sign of judment against the Jews who intended to murder Jesus to silence Him. Cornelius  had to praise God in the common language of the doubting Jews: this did nothing for Cornelius but gave Peter the courage to dare anyone to forbid baptism.

D.  None of the converts on the day of Pentecost spoke in tongues: the Holy Spirit gave utterance to the Apostles and they spoke to everyone else. No one ever again had this experience outside of the touch of an apostle such as Paul.

Acts 11:15 "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning". "Even as on us at the beginning'": "Just as He fell upon us at the first" (Wey) "As he did originally on us" (Rieu). The "us" in the passage refers to the apostles and the "beginning" is Acts chapter 2:1ff.

E.  We are not one of the groups to whom the Apostles would WITNESS.  No one between Pentecost and the witness to the Gentiles experienced this. Only the final BEARING WITNESS by Paul remained and no one since this in the established church spoke in tongues.  Only a few mad pretenders claimed the power. Therefore, we should not expect this to happen to save people. Furthermore, all of the SIGNS were to pass judgment upon those who rejected the words of God. in no other case does this "pouring" have anything to do with salvation and most often is God pouring out His wrath, in this case against the doubting Jews.

There was no common reception of the baptism with the Holy Spirit since Pentecost, for if it were something that all Christians were expected to receive and did receive, Peter could have simply pointed to the numerous other incidents, and not have had to go all the way back to Pentecost to find a similar incident.. Nor, would the doubting Jews have been subdued.

Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished,
as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles
also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

ASTONISHED: existēmi
From G1537 and G2476 ; to put (stand) out of wits, that is, astound, or (reflexively) become astounded, insane:—amaze, be (make) astonished, be beside self (selves), bewitch, wonder. Degenerate from one's own nature drive out of one's senses, get rid of, dispose of the CLAIMS of a person, to become SEPARATED, stand out of the way.
Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

This was a SIGN against the Jews and never a utilitarian way to have sin remitted.  People STILL want to FORBID WATER: what difference would it make if baptism did not DO what Jesus Christ promised that it would do.

Pouring out some speaking gift from God is never said to save one or prove that one is saved.

Notice that the witness would be to Jews, Samaritans, Gentiles and those "far away."  This sign was to prove to Peter that the Gentiles should be baptized and to the doubting Jews that the GENTILES as a race had been validated by this witness.

The Jews were put "out of their wits" or bewitched.  In the modern pseudo-tongue speaking the leader in fact expects
you to speak in tongues, you know that you must do so to be accepted and no one is astounded.  The effect was to silence them so that they could not forbid Peter from baptizing the Gentiles by which they were saved. Again the common connection betwee SPIRIT and WORDS every time it was poured out. This is parallelism:

A. because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
B. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God

Turn you at my reproof: behold,

A. I will pour out my spirit unto you,
B.
I will
make known my words unto you. Proverbs 1:23

Peter had preached the words of the Spirit and the people had received Jesus Christ. Note that Jesus promised to personally return as a fuller comforter: John said that the Comforter's name was "Jesus Christ the Righteous." Therefore, to receive the Spirit is to receive Jesus Christ::
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God,
and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 18:8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue,
        believed on the Lord with all his house;
and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.

Rom. 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore, when Cornelius received the Holy Spirit they received the Word or they received Jesus Christ the NAME of Father, Son and Spirit.

Then answered Peter,

Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized,
which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
Then prayed they him to tarry certain days

Look back again to the same Peter preaching the same gospel on the day of Pentecost:
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,
        Repent
, and be baptized every one of you
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off,
even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized:
and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
  1. To be saved and added to the eternal kingdom is to be saved
FROM the massed multitudes of a crooked or perverse race of people.
  2. The people who received this warning were baptized.
  3. Therefore, they were SAVED
  4. Because they were saved Christ added them to His Church.

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. [or were being saved]

  5. Therefore, when Cornelius received the Spirit or Word of Jesus Christ they were baptized. Baptism is for no other purpose but for the remission of sins which makes one in a saved condition. Only then would Christ add them to His church by "translating their spirits into an eternal kingdom."  If Cornelius was saved simply by having the Spirit or Mind of Christ cause Him to praise Him then he was saved outside of the body of Christ.
THE JERUSALEM CONFERENCE

The commands of Jesus was that we be baptized for or in order to the remission of sins. We know that both Cornelius and Peter understood that there would be a sermon telling him words by which he could be saved.  By looking at the Jerusalem Conference we understand that James thought that they had been converted to God at baptism:
Acts 15:5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying,
That it was needful to circumcise them,
and to command them to keep the law of Moses.
Acts 15:6 And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter
And when there had been much disputing,
Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren,
ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us,
        that the
Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. Acts 15:7
And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness
, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; Acts 15:8

Adam Clark

Verse 8. And God which knoweth the hearts
We had this epithet of the Divine Being once before; see chap. i. 24, and the note there: it occurs no where else in the New Testament.

Acts 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

Bare them witness] Considered them as proper or fit to receive the Gospel of Christ. It is properly remarked by learned men, that marturein tini, to bear witness to any person, signifies to approve, to testify in behalf of. Here it signifies that, as God evidently sent the Gospel to the Gentiles,

and, by the preaching of it, conveyed the Holy Spirit to them who believed, and as he can make no improper judgment of any who knows all hearts and their secrets, therefore what he had done was right: he saw that it was time for them to receive the Gospel; and he saw that they might be safely trusted with this heavenly deposit; and the experience of eighteen hundred years has justified the conduct of God.

The conclusion was that the Spirit through the prophets had promised salvation to the Gentiles. We know that they heard and believed and Peter said that God had given the Gentiles the right to REPENT unto life.
Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying,
Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted
repentance unto life.
Acts 15:19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them,
which from among the Gentiles are
turned [converted] to God:
1994. epistrepho, ep-ee-stref´-o; from 1909 and 4762; to revert (literally, figuratively or morally): — come (go) again, convert, (re-)turn (about, again).
Conversion is parallel to Baptism

THIS IS WHAT JESUS CHRIST THE SPIRIT COMMANDED:

Acts 26:16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

Acts 26:17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles,
..         unto whom now I send thee,

Acts 26:18

See                                         To open their eyes, and
..       Repent and be baptized    to TURN from darkness to light,
..                                                       and from the power of Satan unto God,
.    .   Remission                            that they may receive forgiveness of sins,
..       Gift of Spirit                          and inheritance among them
..                                                       which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

So, Jesus as The Holy Spirit refutes the idea that anyone is saved by "speaking an unlearned languages."

Acts 26:19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
Acts 26:20 But
shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Conversion always demands obedience.

Deut XXX WEB. It shall happen, when all these things are come on you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you shall call them to mind among all the nations, where Yahweh your God has driven you,

[2]  and shall RETURN to Yahweh your God, and shall OBEY his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your children, with all your heart, and with all your soul;

[3]  that then Yahweh your God will turn your captivity, and have compassion on you, and will return and gather you from all the peoples, where Yahweh your God has scattered you.

Being BAPTIZED is parallel to CONVERSION.
Acts 2:38: Then Peter said unto them,
Repent: and be baptized
EVERY ONE
in the name of Jesus Christ: for the remission of sins:
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac.2:38
Ac.3:19
Repent ye therefore,
and be
converted,
that your sins may be blotted out,
..    when the times of refreshing
..    shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Once again, James said that the Gentiles whom Peter had baptized had been converted.

Wherefore my sentence is,
         that we trouble not them,
which from among the Gentiles are TURNED to God: Acts 15:19

Irenaeus Against Heresies Book III

7. From the words of Peter, therefore, which he addressed in Caesarea to Cornelius the centurion, and those Gentiles with him, to whom the word of God was first preached, we can understand what the apostles used to preach, the nature of their preaching, and their idea with regard to God.

For this Cornelius was, it is said, "a devout man, and one who feared God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and praying to God always. He saw therefore, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying, Thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. Wherefore send to Simon, who is called Peter."  But when Peter saw the vision, in which the voice from heaven said to him, "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common,"  this happened [to teach him] that the God who had, through the law, distinguished between clean and unclean, was He who had purified the Gentiles through the blood of His Son-He whom also Cornelius worshipped; to whom Peter, coming in, said, "Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation, he that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to Him."

He thus clearly indicates, that He whom Cornelius had previously feared as God, of whom he had heard through the law and the prophets, for whose sake also he used to give alms, is, in truth, God.

The knowledge of the Son was, however, wanting to him; therefore did [Peter] add,
"The word, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee,
after the baptism which John preached,
Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Ghost,
and with power; who went about doing good,
and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him
.

And we are witnesses of all those things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they slew, hanging Him on a beam of wood: Him God raised up the third day, and showed Him openly; not to all the people, but unto us, witnesses chosen before of God, who did eat and drink with Him after the resurrection from the dead. And He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is He which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. To Him give all the prophets witness, that, through His name, every one that believeth in Him does receive remission of sins."

The apostles, therefore, did preach the Son of God, of whom men were ignorant; and His advent, to those who had been already instructed as to God; but they did not bring in another god. For if Peter had known any such thing, he would have preached freely to the Gentiles, that the God of the Jews was indeed one, but the God of the Christians another; and all of them, doubtless, being awe-struck because of the vision of the angel, would have believed whatever he told them.

But it is evident from Peter's words that he did indeed still retain the God who was already known to them; but he also bare witness to them that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, the Judge of quick and dead, into whom he did also command them to be baptized for the remission of sins;

and not this alone, but he witnessed that Jesus was Himself the Son of God
who also, having been anointed with the Holy Spirit, is called Jesus Christ.

And He is the same being that was born of Mary, as the testimony of Peter implies. Can it really be, that Peter was not at that time as yet in possession of the perfect knowledge which these men discovered afterwards? According to them, therefore, Peter was imperfect, and the rest of the apostles were imperfect; and so it would be fitting that they, coming to life again, should become disciples of these men, in order that they too might be made perfect. But this is truly ridiculous. These men, in fact, are proved to be not disciples of the apostles, but of their own wicked notions. To this cause also are due the various opinions which exist among them, inasmuch as each one adopted error just as he was capable [of embracing it]. But the Church throughout all the world, having its origin from the apostles, perseveres in one and the same opinion with regard to God and His Son.
When he speaks of bishops succeeding the Apostles he clearly means that the church leadership MUST preserve the Scriptures as written as authority for faith and practice. Church leaders do not get the authority to obsolete or change any of the Scripture which he treats as Commands, Examples and Inferences along with all church leaders.
Irenaeus (ca. 150) listed with most other scholars
Against Heresies 3.1.1
“We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith.”

Clement of Alexandria (d. 215)
The Stromata, 7:16
“But those who are ready to toil in the most excellent pursuits, will not desist from the search after truth, till they get the demonstration from the Scriptures themselves.”
THOSE FAR AWAY WOULD ALSO PROVE THE WITNESS OF PAUL AS THE LAST GROUP.
Acts 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth,
Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
Acts 19:2 He said unto them,
Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there
be any Holy Ghost.
Those baptized with John's baptism prepared the remnant prior to the day of Pentecost. Jesus was still with them in the flesh and either he or His disciples also baptized. Jesus promised to return as the "another Comforter" and the Comforter's name says John was "Jesus Christ the Righteous." Therefore, Christian baptism began a new era and Jesus had promised the Apostles that they would BEAR WITNESS to the four Groups.
Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized?
And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance,
saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him,
        that is, on Christ Jesus.
Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them,
        the Holy Ghost came on them;
and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. [Glossa is a real language]

Because they did not predict, to prophesy would be to teach in the many dialects of the whole province.

Paul remained for three months and the tongues speakers who "prophesied" or taught may have been the cause of the spread of the Gospel far and wide extending as far as Colossae.  Of miracles,

Acts 19:11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
Acts 19:12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons
and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them

Consistent with all such events, the supernatural speaking or teaching in an unlearned language and the miracles was to validate PAUL and not those he probably used as evangelists or those who were healed.

By the end of the lives of these apostles, the Word of God had been recorded and the letters of Paul are called Scripture. Both Paul and Peter show that the EXAMPLE Jesus left meaning a written "memory" was the only way to judge false teachers.  There is always the WE or Apostles and the YOU who are the readers only.

The Spirit of Christ spoke only through the writing prophets and they all repudiated the Monarchy.
1Pet. 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently,
        who prophesied
of the grace that should come unto you:
1Pet. 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify,
when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ,
and the glory that should follow.
1Pet. 1:12 Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves,
but unto us they did minister the things,
which are now reported unto you by them
that have preached the gospel unto you
        with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven;
which things the angels desire to look into.
Rev. 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me,
See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant,
and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God:
for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
2Pet. 1:15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease
to have these things always in remembrance.
2Pet. 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables,
when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
3454. muthos, moo´-thos; perhaps from the same as 3453 (through the idea of tuition); a tale, i.e. fiction (“myth”): -- fable.

Eph. 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
2Pet. 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory,
when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory,
This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
2Pet. 1:18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard,
when we were with him in the holy mount.
For those addicted to singing or using instruments in pagan rituals, Paul commanded--if we can use the word sing loosely--to sing that which is written with one mind and one mouth. For those afflicted with MYTH mongers who wrote only fiction but never true facts, the act was call prophesying because it brought on an aroused mental spirit, Peter commanded that for our ekklesia or synagogue or school of the Bible that WE or the apostles have filleld up and expounded the prophecies that the YOU give heed which is the only WORSHIP concept in the New Testament and early church history.
2Pet. 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy;
whereunto ye do well that ye take heed,
as unto a light that shineth in a dark place,
until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

2Pet. 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture
is of any private interpretation. [further expounding]
2Pet. 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man:
but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Teaching that which has been taught is the ONLY way to keep the false teachers or corrupters of the Word or "sellers of learning at retail" off the backs of people where all such theatrics is the hypocritic arts and all such performers were called parasites.
2Pet. 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people,
even as there shall be false teachers among you,
who privily shall bring in damnable heresies,
even denying the Lord that bought them,
and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2Pet. 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways;
by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
2Pet. 2:3 And through covetousness shall they
with feigned words make merchandise of you:
whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not,
        and their damnation slumbereth not.
When you teach the conversion of Cornelius you must teach that which is written. Furthermore, you must make sure that it is in agreement with parallel passages as the way that Jesus Christ made certain that we cannot fall under captivity to the theologians Jesus called "doctors of the law who take away the key to knowledge."

Cornelius was baptized FOR the remission of sins after which God gave him A holy spirit or A good conscience which gives him the power to read the black text on white paper.
