When the Jews came out of Egypt they LOST their favored status and God sentenced them to Assyria and Babylon for captivity and destruction. The SEED of the dispersed did not take root except by a very small memales.

Amos 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images,
the STAR of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

Acts 7:41 And they made a calf in those days,

Updated 5.29.11

I am trying to put this mass of passages in Biblical order: it will help to understand that Bob Ross wants us to follow the pattern and be abandoned by God to worship the starry host and be sentenced back to Babylon

Since Bob Ross is an expert on Spurgeon but does not quote honestly, take a look at his commentary on Psalm 33:

EXPOSITION

Verse 2. Praise the Lord with harp. Men need all the help they can get to stir them up to praise.
This is the lesson to be gathered from the use of musical instruments under the old dispensation.
Israel was at school, and used childish things to help her to learn;
but in these days, when Jesus gives us spiritual manhood, we can make melody without strings and pipes.

We who do not believe these things to be expedient in worship, lest they should mar its simplicity, do not affirm them to be unlawful, and if any George Herbert or Martin Luther can worship God better by the aid of well tunes instruments, who shall gainsay their right?

We do not need them, they would hinder than help our praise, but if others are otherwise minded, are they not living in gospel liberty? Sing unto him. This is the sweetest and best of music.
No instrument like the human voice.
As a help to singing the instrument is alone to be tolerated,
for keys and strings do not praise the Lord.

With the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. The Lord must have a full octave, for all notes are his, and all music belongs to him. Where several pieces of music are mentioned, we are taught to praise God with all the powers which we possess.

Verse 2. Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Here we have the first mention of musical instruments in the Psalms.
It is to be observed that the early fathers almost with one accord
        protest against their use in churches;
as they are forbidden in the Eastern church to this day, where yet, by the consent of all, the singing is infinitely superior to anything that can be heard in the West. J. M. Neale.

Verse 2. Harp; Psaltery, etc. Our church does not use musical instruments, as harps and psalteries, to praise God withal, that she may not seem to Judaise. Thomas Aquinas. It was only permitted to the Jews, as sacrifice was, for the heaviness and grossness of their souls. God condescended to their weakness, because they were lately drawn off from idols; but now instead of organs, we may use our own bodies to praise him withal. Chrysostom. The use of singing with instrumental music was not received in the Christian churches as it was among the Jews in their infant state, but only the use of plain song. Justin Martyr.

OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC IN WORSHIP

We suggest that you begin at Mount Sinai: God gave Israel The Book of The Covenant. This was based on grace and had no worship rituals. In Exodus 18 before the instrumental fall from Grace Jethro instructed Moses how to divide the tribes into sub groups as low as 10. these would meet in their own area to REST, Read and Rehears the Word of God.  The pattern for this Church of Christ in the wilderness never changed.

The people rose up in play which was the musical idolatry of the golden calf. We suggest you read what happened which cursed Israel and sentenced them to be return to Babylon.  Nothing happened from the abandonment of the Civil-Military-Priestly elite until Christ condemned them all in the prophets can be used as a PATTERNISM for anything but Canaanite Baalism.

The total lost and beyond redemption defined by some Psalms and Prophets

Bob Ross: A series by Bob L. Ross published in the Burkburnett, Texas INFORMER STAR newspaper beginning Dec. 30, 1993.

[NOTE: The following is part of my book entitled "Campbellites, Cowbells, Rosary Beads, and Snake-Handling." It was first published in a short series of ads in the Burkburnett newspaper prior to my debate on Instrumental Music with Michael Hatcher in July of 1994. A Lutheran Pastor, Keith Schweitzer, arranged for the debate after Mr. Hatcher of the local Church of Christ had published several newspaper attacks on the Lutheran Church and issued a challenge for a debate on the subject of instrumental music.

In consequence of the debate, the Church of Christ elders dismissed Mr. Hatcher, and the elders later came to the Lutheran Pastor with an apology for having abused the Lutheran Church via the newspaper. If you are interested in the entire book on the subject of instrumental music, the price is $5 plus $3 for shipping.]

This is a personal attack and says nothing about  Michael Hatcher's message against instruments in the church. Because Ross throws out a host of partial texts out of context from the God-Abandoned Period of the Monarchy, this would detract from the direct commands for the church and the PROPHETS who repudiate the instrument as the MARK of people who have no intention of just doing what the Word says.

Michael Hatcher list of papers is here. click on the PDF article Mechanical Instrumental Music Rejects the Authority of the New Testament

Bob L. Ross: I 3. "Why do some churches reject instrumental music?"

Church groups, such as Churches of Christ and Primitive Baptists, here in Texas, reject instrumental music.

F. LaGard Smith claims that the MAJORITY of the world's worshipers do not use and utterly condemn the use of MUSIC to induce a "drug high" to be peddled as "spiritual worship." it is actually the production of FIGHT, FLIGHT and/or SEXUALITY. Bob Ross likes to BLUFF you or panic you into believe that YOU are the STRANGE exception. That works psychological violence to make you want to conform to the MAJORITY who, in the remnant theory, will be lost

Some History of Instrumental music in worship

Bob Ross: 1. "What kinds of music are in the Bible?"

The words "musick," "musical," and "musician(s)" are used in the Bible 75 times, and 55 of these are "captions" to the Psalms.

Bob L.Ross: Thus, in the Bible, "musick" is used of instrumental music only. There are, however, two classes of instruments: (1) wind instruments, (2) hand-played instruments. These have been here since the days of Adam (Gen. 4:21, harp and organ).

Melos , eos, to, limb by limb, like, dismember,
B. esp. musical member, phrase: hence, song, strain
2. music to which a song is set, tune, Arist.Po.1450a14; Opposite. rhuthmos, metron, Pl.Grg. 502c; Opposite. rhuthmos, rhēma, Id.Lg.656c

Bob Ross:20. "David Lipscomb once wrote in THE GOSPEL ADVOCATE magazine that 'the organ was introduced into the worship of the Romish church in the year 1290.

We have no account of it having been used in worship by professed Christians previous to that time'" (1878, p. 567).

No one engaged in congregational singing with organ accompaniment until long after John Calvin and the Reformation.

The organ is first mentioned in Genesis 4:21 and was also as far back as the time of Job who evidently played the harp and organ (Job 30:31).

We have noted that this is to prove that Jubal is the FATHER of all who handle musical instruments used to silence the voicke of God.  Jesus called them the sons of the devil because they speak on their own.

THE ORGAN IS THE BOOK OF JOB

It needs no proving that when Jesuspromises to meet with us as our ONLY TEACHER who takes no pay, and we sing our own songs and play instrument in the symbolic Holy Place, we tell God, as in all examples of music: WE will not listen to you, God?

Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power? Job 21:7

Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. Job 21: 8
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. Job 21: 9

Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. Job 21: 10

What they do as natural FERTILITY rituals when they depend on the pagan "gods."

They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. Job 21: 11
They
take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. Job 21: 12
They
spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. Job 21: 13

What was the UNIVERSAL message of singing and playing instruments throughout the entire Bible:

Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. Job 21: 14

What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? Job 21: 15

Music always said: "WE can can appease or threaten the gods and force them to GIVE us what we need: we will tolerate quiet discipline:

Lo, their good is not in their hand:
the counsel of the wicked is far from me. Job 21: 16

How oft is the candle of the wicked put out and how oft cometh their destruction upon them!
God distributeth sorrows in his anger
. Job 21: 17

They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away. Job 21: 18

They will be "baptized" with the Wind of Judgment and the Fire of consumption.
Bob Ross' pattern you are to follow.

Job 30:27 My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.
Job 30:28 I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.
Job 30:29 I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls.
Job 30:30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
Job 30:31 My harp also is turned to mourning,
and my organ into the voice of them that weep.

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Ge.4:21

JUBAL A CAINITE IS THE FATHER OF ALL WHO HANDLE INSTRUMENTS WITHOUT AUTHORITY

The family of Lamech were Cainites. Cain means "a musical note." This family shows up under the name Genii, Genius, Genun and other names. It is said that "Satan came into them in their youth." They were taught mixed-sex choirs, instruments, and women exercising the AUTHENTIA power Paul condemned. Using "music" they seduced people away from the Living Word of God. This is what Satan or Lucifer did in heaven and he was CAST OUT.

We are told that Eve was "wholly seduced" as a vigin was often TAKEN by the ruler just before the husband got her. This can result in maternal but not fraternal twins. Therefore, Cain (the musical mark) is said to be OF THAT WICKED ONE. The word ORGAN has the same meaning as in the phallic religions. Flutes were MALE and FEMALE sexual symbols and had real seductive power as any MUSICIAN knows because they have to be sexually ambivalent.

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Ge.4:21

The word HANDLE is a sexual word just as are percussion instruments. The Hebrew word is:

Taphas (h8610) taw-fas'; a prim. root; to manipulate, i. e. seize; chiefly to capture, wield; spec. to overlay; fig. to use unwarrantably: - catch, handle, (lay, take) hold (on, over), stop, * surely, surprise, take.

This says clearly that Jubal taught the use of musical instruments WITHOUT AUTHORITY. Books such as The Book of Enoch and many others prove that Jubal got his "authority" from Satan. That is why his INSTRMENTS translate directlyinto Topheth a word meaning HELL FIRE.

Topheth (h8611) to'-feth; from the base of 8608; a smiting, i. e. (fig.) contempt: - tabret.

When the WARRIOR MUSICIANS mocked Jesus it was with "music" just as prophesied in Psalm 41. However, Judas would hang himself and not get the honor because the SOP Jesus hand prepared for him is the base of PSALLO or EXTERNAL MELODY. This caused Satan to fill Judas prematurely and Judas grasped that he WAS that wicked one in person. The word Topheth has both meanings:

He hath made me also a byword of the people; and aforetime I was as a tabret. Job 17:6KJV

But He has made me a byword of the people, And I have become one in whose face men spit. Job 17:6NKJ

The camp-following women had the JESTER'S way of spitting in the face of Saul to drive a wedge between him and David. The word HALAL includes "driving a wedge, play the flute, pollute and prostitutes.

Tophtheh (h8613) tof-teh'; prob. a form of 8611; Tophteh, a place of cremation: - Tophet.

And the Lord shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm (Messiah the Intercessor), with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. Isa 30:30

For through the voice of the Lord shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod. Isa 30:31

And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking Isa 30:32

For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it. Isa 30:33

Paul warned:

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb 12:24

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: Heb 12:25

Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. Heb 12:26

And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Heb.12:27

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: Heb 12:28

For our God is a consuming fire. Heb 12:29

The king of Babylon is also described as the INDWELT Lucifer or Satan. In a parallel statement Isaiah wrote:

Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms (maggots) cover thee. Is.14:11

That is, the noise of the instruments are brought down to the place of eternal burning and the maggots clean up what the fires miss.

Of the Babylon harlot church in the end times:

And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; Rev 18:22

The SINGERS and PLAYERS plagued the temple area or any place crowds might collect. Therefore, we hear David equate two important words:

The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels. Ps.68:25

Psalm 68:25 and Psalm 87:7 show that Nagan and Chalal or halal can mean the same thing: to play on musical instruments which was associated with treading out new wine and symbolic of God's treading out His wrath as He has the commics in sore derision.

And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad (halal) in their hands, and drummed on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard. 1 Sam 21:13

However susceptible the Hebrews were to magical, charismatic music, the king of Gath knew that the "spirit" came out of the vats:

Have I (Achish) need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play (rave like) the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house? 1Sam 21:15

No! Don't let him in.

The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. Ho.9:7

The Lord hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the Lord, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks. Je.29:26

Because the Levites as an old pagan cult from Egypt had now been turned over to worship the Starry Host listed in Amos and in Acts 7, They PROFANED the Sabbath in order to carry on Sabianism.  However, the "congregation" was only the Civil-Military-Priestly complex and the godly people were quarantined outside of the gates and to their homes where church or school of the Word was permitted.

Nagan (h5059) naw-gan'; a prim. root; prop. to thrum, i. e. beat a tune with the fingers; espec. to play on a stringed instrument; hence (gen.) to make music: - player on instruments, sing to the stringed instruments, melody, ministrel, play (-er, -ing..

"Minstrels" were signs of judgement and often prostitutes. See how Elisha used the minstrel to prophesy a DESTRUCTIVE message.

Paul warned that Eve had been "wholly seduced" in the same way that a young wife is seduced. Therefore, Cain is OF THAT WICKED ONE.  Cain and the Cainites were the fathers of all profane rituals intended to seduce people and take away their property.

Jubal was the FATHER as a Cainite of ALL religious musicians

Jubal was of the LAMECH family. Lamech's name is identified in the Babylonian god list as EA the patron god of music and other things.

The LAMECH family speak of musical enchanters, soothsayers and those who were TAUGHT by Satan or Lucifer how to organize musical and instrumental teams to seduce the holy people AWAY from the presence and discipline of the living Word.

In the Babylonian stories these SECTARIANS are identified as GENUN which speaksof the GENII or GENIUS. They were the Caberi who were minstrels, blacksmiths, prostitutes and MUSICAL ENCHANTERS. In fact, the SERPENT in the garden was the MUSICAL ENCHANTER, Lucifer, who cam with wind, string and percussion instruments and WHOLLY SEDUCED Adam and eve in the sexual sense.

Almost every deep truth of God is commentary and warning against pagan worship which had fallen into the hands of the professional prophets and prophetesses who sold the elite "ease in Zion" to the beat of musical worship teams. For instance, a powerful theme which the ancient Jews understood, tells the story of the Babylonian Genun who is a composite of Jubal, Jabal, Tubal-Cain and Naaman all of whom speak of the whispering bronze of the serpent's message of the Babylonians. Paul called it 'booming gongs and clanging cymbals" as they tried to "speak the unknown tongues of angels and men."

"Genun (Jubal) the Canaanite, son of Lamech the Blind, living in the Land of the Slime Pits, was ruled by Azael from his earliest youth, and invented all sorts of musical instruments. When he played these, Azael entered into them too, so that they gave forth seductive tunes entrancing the hearts of all listeners. Genun would assemble companies of musicians, who inflamed one another with music until their lust burned bright like fire, and they lay together promiscuously. He also brewed beer (for new wineskins), gathered great crowds in taverns, gave them to drink, and taught them to forge iron swords and spear-points, with which to do murder at random when they were drunk.

"It was the Cainite's punishment to have a hundred daughters borne them for each son; and this led to such husband-hunger that their women began to raid houses (2 Tim 3:6) and carry off men. One day it pleased them to seduce them Sethites, after daubing their faces with rouge and powder, their eyes with antimony, and the soles of their feet with scarlet, dyeing their hair, putting on golden earrings, golden anklets, bracelets, and many-colored garments.

In their ascent of the holy mountain, they twanged harps, blew trumpets, beat drums, sang, danced, clapped hands;

then, having addressed the five hundred and twenty anchorites in cheerful voices, each caught hold of her victim and seduced him.

These Sethites, after once succumbing to the Cainite women's blandishments, became more unclean than dogs (male prostitutes), and utterly forgot God's laws.

Even the "Sons of Judges" now corrupted the daughters of the poor. Whenever a bride was beautified for the bridegroom, one such would enter the nuptial chamber and enjoy her first.  (THE SONS OF GOD AND THE DAUGHTERS OF MEN. From Hebrew Myths: The Book of Genesis By Robert Graves and Raphael Patai Chapter 18 p. 100-107)

See how Inanna (Ishtar, Zoe, etc) got Ea the god of music drunk and stole the ME or supernatural powers. She stole the power of the GATES OF HELL, musicians, the ELDERSHIP and SEXUAL PERVERSION.

The ORGAN in Genesis and and Psalm 150 is not a WORSHIP instrument but the instrument of the HOLY WHORE.

"Its (pipe = to love passionately) was apparently a secular instrument and is never listed in the temple orchestra;

only in Ps. 150:4 it is mentioned in a religious (but not ritual) function.

Its ethos was not blameless at all, ase we see from Genesis Rabbah 50: 'The angels said to Lot: 'There are players of the pipe (organ) in the country, hence it ought to be destroyed.'" Its rabbinical identification with the aboda, the flute of the notorious Syrian bayaderes, emphasizes the erotic element which already the Hebrew name suggests." (Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible, p. 460, Abingdon).

The pipe was invented and promoted by Jubal and not God.

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Genesis 4:21

Handle means to manipulate, capture to use without authority (h8610). Job used the pipe to describe the children who sang, played and danced showing that they didn't want to hear from God (Job 21). Job also used the organ in a figurative sense of his mouring and weeping.

Taphas (h8610) taw-fas'; a prim. root; to manipulate, i. e. seize; chiefly to capture, wield; spec. to overlay; fig. to use unwarrantably: - catch, handle, (lay, take) hold (on, over), stop, * surely, surprise, take.

Topheth (h8611) to'-feth; from the base of 8608; a smiting, i. e. (fig.) contempt: - tabret.

Topheth is HELL itself: the king of Babylon went into hell with his/her INSTRUMENTS and MUSICIANS.

Topheth (h8612) o'-feth; the same as 8611; Topheth, a place near Jerus.: - Tophet, Topheth.

TAPHAPH (H8608) taw-faf'; a prim. root; to drum, i. e. play (as) on the tambourine: - taber, play with timbrels.

The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels. Ps.68:25

Player is

Nagan (g5059) naw-gan'; a prim. root; prop. to thrum, i. e. beat a tune with the fingers; espec. to play on a stringed instrument; hence (gen.) to make music: - player on instruments, sing to the stringed instruments, melody, ministrel, play (-er, -ing..

As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee. Ps.87:7

The PLAYER is:

Chalal (h2490) khaw-lal'; ...to wound, to dissolve; fig. to profane (a person, place or thing), to break (one's word), to begin (as if by an "opening wedge"); denom. (from 2485) to play (the flute): - begin (* men began), defile, * break, defile, * eat (as common things), * first, * gather the grape thereof, * take inheritance, pipe, player on instruments, pollute, (cast as) profane (self), prostitute, slay (slain), sorrow, stain, wound.

THIS IS WHY JUBAL HANDLED INSTRUMENTS WITHOUT AUTHORITY.

Female players and male musicians were PROSTITUTES and SODOMITES: they plagued all temples.

The word Halal is similar and it means PRAISE in the sense of MAKING SELF VILE as when David stripped naked and was HONORED by the camp follower girls.

The word LUCIFER derives from this PRAISE word which means to "make a show." Lucifer loves to get you OUT OF YOUR HEAD with music.

THE BOOK OF EXODUS

Bob L.Ross: These classes of instruments are also said to be in God's own heavenly presence (Ex. 20:18;

God restated the Abrahamic covenant as pure Grace to the Israelites who were worse than the Egyptians. When Moses presented the following commandment:

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbours wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbours. Exod 20:17

And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed (trembled), and stood afar off. Exod 20:18

And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. Exod 20:19

And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. Exod 20:20

The israelite pledged to keep THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT. However, when Moses went back upon the Mountain to get the written form, God tested them for the symbolic 40 days. They failed the test, rose up to PLAY which was musical idolatry of the Egyptian triad, and forfeited GRACE. God turned them over to worship the starry host (Acts 7). This included Chiun or Saturn whose Chaldee number is 666.

God gave them THE BOOK OF THE LAW and a priesthood which quarantined them from the presence of a holy God. Paul in 2 Cor. 3 says that then and there they were BLINDED and never understood God's Spirit nature and spiritual worship. Only when they turned to Christ and asked for A holy spirit or A clear conscience could they grasp that through MUSIC they had forfeited God's Spiritual presence. Christ as the angel or pillar accompanied them because God's SPIRIT presence would have killed them all. This regenerated spirit was requested and granted ONLY when people removed themselves from the "treacherous infidel" category of unbelief.

Bob Ross:19. "What about solos, choirs, choral groups, and quartets in church services?"

Procedures for a "church service" are not specified in the Scripture; in fact, it does not teach anything about places and times of a "service" or "services." Everything that is "in Spirit and in truth" is acceptable in worship (John 4:23, 24). Since singing is authorized, without any specified procedures, it may be done in all possible forms which contribute to worship. Preaching, teaching, praying, singing - all are to done in ways that contribute to "order" (I Corinthians 14:40).

The "rule" or "measure" of singing is summed-up in Psalms 150:6: "Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord."

Woops! there goes all of the LIFELESS INSTRUMENTS! What does that exclude? I hope Bob Ross can interpret the sounds of the trumpet

1Corinthians 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues,
what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Unless you are a God-ordained prophet THAT defines the PATTERN for the assembly. You CANNOT profite by making instrumental noise.

1Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to [public]  reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

That was the pattern Christ ordained for the church in the wilderness

Acts 15:21 For Moses
of old time hath in every city
        them that preach him,
being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
1Corinthians 14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp,
except they give a distinction in the sounds,
how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

Instruments in the temple were to give SIGNALS as they did in warfare: However, instruments are excluded because they have no BREATH and they do not teach the Word of God.  As an example of disturbed SPEECH

1Corinthians 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound,
who shall prepare himself to the battle?

1Corinthians 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue [organ] words easy to be understood,
how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.

1Corinthians 14:10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world,
and none of them is without signification.

1Corinthians 14:11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice,
I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.

Bob Ross: Some who ask for a "verse" for every particular thing generally will "pick-and-choose" what they approve and disapprove as being "lawful." They are consistently inconsistent, for they have scores of things in their own sect for which they cannot give a specific verse.

Bill Jackson wrote in CHRISTIAN WORKER magazine:

"We think brethren are seeking in vain if they expect to find, in the New Testament, a step-by-step worship service laid out for us, giving detailed information on Sunday morning, Sunday evening meetings, and exactly how all worship matters were held. We are indeed told what constitutes the avenues of worship, and we know that these are to be done, but we have no 'complete' service laid out for us" (Oct. '90, p. 2).

Christ the ROCK laid out the pattern for the Holy Convocation which came to be held each rest day.  This was the Qahal, synagogue or church of Christ in the wilderness.

The Synagogue Pattern for the church began in the wilderness and never changed even when Jesus clearly EXAMPLED the pattern for what He called the synagogue or ekklesia.

John Calvin understood the pattern and thus the Campbells called
Church is A school of Christ
Worship is reading and musing the Word.

Before the musical fall from grace in Exodus 32 Jethro instructed Moses how to divide and sub-divide the tribes down to the smallest group of 10 males.  Therefore, a synagogue most often consisted of at least 10 males where the godly people were quarantined from the Gentile-like temple.

"Despite the differences between the Mosaic and the Egyptian cults, it can hardly be denied that Egyptian influence on Jewish musical practices were quite significant. They would stand to reason because of the high quality of egyptian cultic music.

The tambourine or timbrel, a hoop of bells over which a white skin was stretched, came from Egypt. Miriam used this instrument to accompany the singing and dancing on the shores of the Red Sea (Ex. 15).

The trumpet blown for decampment, at the gathering of the people and on different cultic occasions, especially during sacrifices (2 Chron. 30:21; 35:15; Num 10:2), was the signaling instrument of the Egyptian army.

The sistrum, according to 2 Sam 6:5, was used by the Israelites and bore the name mena'aneim. It was the same as the Egyptian kemkem which was employed in the cult of Isis.

The solemnity celebrated on the occasion of the transferring of the Ark to Sion, as well as the dances of the daughters of Israel at the annual feast of the Lord of Shiloh (Judg 21:21), were similar in thier musical embellishments to Egyptian customs in the liturgy and at parades. As Herodotus reports,

women sang the praises of Osiris while likenesses of the gods were born about and, during the festival of Diana at Bubastis,

choirs of men and women sang and danced to the beating of drums and the playing of flutes." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 65)

This was still affirmed by the elders and apostles in Jerusalem

Acts 15:21 For Moses
        of old time hath
in every city them that preach him,
being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

This is what Paul commanded Timothy and affirmed in Corinth.

2Corinthians 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope,
we use great plainness of speech:
2Corinthians 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
2Corinthians 3:14 But their minds were blinded:
for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away
in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
2Corinthians 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read,
the vail is upon their heart.
2Corinthians 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn [baptized] to the Lord,
the vail shall be taken away.
2Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit:
and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord,
are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

The word MUSICA and CANTUS speak of the HORRIBLE sounds and FEAR and PANIC created by loud rejoicing or musical instruments. That is why instruments were HANDLED by Jubal to ENSLAVE others by appealing to their fear and lust.

Again, we quote:

For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, Heb 12:18

And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more: Heb 12:19

(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: Heb 12:20

And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:) Heb 12:21

The literal Jerusalem speaks of Hagar, the Law of Moses, of Egypt (slavery) and of SODOM.

And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. Re.11:8

Only at baptism are we added to the heavenly kingdom and out citizenship is transferred to heaven.

But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, Heb 12:22

To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, Heb 12:23

The church of the firsborn is the church of Christ. The blood is sprinkled on our hearts or spirits ONLY at baptism.

Heb 12:29

You cannot serve God with reverence and fear with a musical entertainment ritual.

II KINGS

Bob Ross: 11. "What Bible prophet used musical instruments for inspiration?"

A: Elisha. Read II Kings 3:15. This demonstrates that music has a "spiritual" usefulness and is consistent with the spiritual character of those who love and worship God. The right use of music effects good results, as the case of Elisha demonstrates. It is often helpful to promote the right "frame of mind," and this may be one of the reasons it was popular with the Old Testament prophets (I Sam. 10:5; 16:14-23; II Chronicles 29:25; Isa. 38:20, 21; Habakkuk 3:19).

Bob Ross and almost everyone missed the Mount Sinai event where the people rose up in musical idolatry. Then and there God turned them over to worship the starry host. That is why all credible information including the Jewish Encyclopedia knows that the sacrificial system at the temple was devoted to STAR WORSHIP. These are the same "gods" they worshipped for the entire period in the wilderness.

Saturn Worship at Mount sinai: "Apis: Another name for Saturn, "the hidden one". The calf Apis, known in Egypt as Hepi, or Hapi, mystically representative of the Egyptian, Osiris. In Chaldea Hap means "to cover", in Egyptian "to conceal" Centaurus: Same as Kronos , or Saturn. Represented the same as the astrological sign Saggitarius, "the archer" Pluto: (A synonym for Saturn) From the word lut, "to hide"; with the Egyptian prefix becomes P'lut. Rome: The original name for Rome was Saturnia, "the city of Saturn". Saturn: "The hidden god". In Chaldee pronounced Satur, but is spelt stur. Note how close the Chaldee pronunciation Satur is to the "Dance of the Satyrs". The Babylonian fire-god, who is, although an infernal god, identified also, as Phoroneus, the "deliverer". The Latin and, Roman "god of the mysteries". Saturnalia: A festival that celebrated the birth of Saturn. Hislop Definitions.

Bob also missed the fact that because the tribe of Levi was abandoned to worship the starry host as they had always in Egypt, the Qahal, synagogue or Church of Christ in the Wilderness was commanded.  The pattern never changed other than to add the Lord's Supper as a way to further teach the death of Christ.

See how Christ directly included rest and teaching and excluded music for the "school of the Bible.""

Elisha was virtually forced to prophesy for Jehoram who was a son of Ahab and Jezebel.  Jezebel had grown up with prophets of Asherah and Baal who played, sang, danced by "bending their knew to Baal. With no exception the harp or other instrument is the cause or sign of judgment against the People. If Jehoram forced Elisha to help him collect unlawful tribute, Elisha would cause a SIGN which would help them self destruct and DESTROY all of the productive lands and wells Jehoram wanted for himself.

"In Elisha's day the evil Moabites rebelled against Israel. They had a problem. The kings of Israel, Judah and Edom combined their armies and took a sneaky route to attack their enemy, the Moabites. In the hot desert they ran out of water. Now you don't want to run out of water in the hot desert. When they were dying of thirst they called on the prophet Elisha, and he told them to dig ditches. God sent water and filled those ditches. In the morning those ditches were full of water! They were refreshed.

But the enemy looked out there and saw all those ditches with the water and thought the water was blood, and that these three forces had argued during the night and killed each other. So they rushed in to take the spoils & were overwhelmed in a devastating battle. They got slaughtered. " Don J. Gettys

This fits the patternism of Amos, Isaiah and other passages which condemn the instrument because it was used to steal from the poor and caused the people to hunger and thirst for the water of the Word and die.

I would suggest reading the REAL MARK of the instrument Elisha called on to bring on God's wrath just as David did to Saul.

Bob Ross:12. "Musical instruments were not part of the Ten Commandments, nor the Law for the Tabernacle services. Where is it commanded?"

There is no command in the Law of Moses for any kind of "musical" instruments.  They were commanded by David when God abandoned Him to an old Jebusite High place.

Actually, both singing and instrumental music became a part of the more "spiritual" elements of Israel's worship after the Ten Commandments and the laws pertaining to sacrifices, etc. The Ten Commandments define the type of moral behavior that is pleasing to God, and the Levitical laws on sacrifices were designed as "typology" of the work and attributes of Jesus Christ who would eventually come into the world. Singing and musical instruments were not a part of these, but were spiritual "by-products" of an obedient and worshipful people who praised the Lord. Singing and music were not done because they were "commanded," but because they are legitimate means of praising the Lord.

However, there was certainly authority for the use of both singing and playing instruments (II Chron. 7:6; 29:25; I Chron. 25:5-7; 28:19-21).

Also, using a Concordance, the reader may see how trumpets were used in worship (for example, Psalms 98:5, 6).

God gave Israel kings in His anger and took them away in His anger: He had already sentenced the Civil-Military-Clergy to worship the starry host.  The Jewish Encyclopedia says that THAT was the gods which they worshipped under the name of Jehovah.

THE INSTITUTION OF THE CHIEF MUSICIAN:

AFTER DAVID DESERTED GIBEON OUT OF FEAR FOR HIS LIFE:

1Chronicles 16:39 And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests,
before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,
1Chronicles 16:40 To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering
        continually morning and evening,
and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD,
        which he commanded Israel;

God had written NOTHING about the musical guilds who usually had Canaanite names and practiced the Canaanite religion since God had abandoned the Jews to worship the starry host because of musical idolatry.  Being ABANDONED (Acts 7) we might expect that David would ADD to that which is written.

THE CHIEFS: Rather than have David killed, He gave him an old Jebusite High Place where the worship of the starry hosts was already being carried out:

1Chronicles 16:41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun,
and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name,
        to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever;

1Chronicles 16:42 And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals
for those that should make a sound,

and with musical instruments of God.
And the sons of Jeduthun were porters
Christ warned about the "lying pen of the Scribes" and called them hypocrites which in Ezekiel 33 named self-preachers, singers and instrument players.

IF ISRAEL HAD BEEN ABANDONED TO AND COMMINGLED WITH THE CANAANITES THEN THIS IS THE BOB ROSS ETAL PATTERN. JUBAL IS THEIR FATHER.
J. AJ 8.42 eminent among the Hebrews at that time for shrewdness; those I mean were Ethan, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. He also composed books of odes and songs a thousand and five, of parables and similitudes three thousand

Jubal, Jabal, Tubal-Cain and Naamah of whom Moses warned, is defined by the Jews under the composite name of Genun (Geni).

(r)
Genun the Canaanite, son of Lamech the Blind, living in the Land of the Slime Pits,
was ruled by Azael from his earliest youth,
and invented all sorts of musical instruments.
When he played these, Azael entered into them too,
so that they gave forth seductive tunes entrancing the hearts of all listeners.
Genun would assemble companies of musicians, who inflamed one another with music until their lust burned bright like fire, and they lay together promiscuously. He also brewed beer, gathered great crowds in taverns, gave them to drink,  and taught them to forge iron swords and spear-points, with which to do murder at random when they were drunk.

Paul repeats this in Romans 1

Jude 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars,
to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Jude 14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying,
Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Jude 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds
        which they have ungodly committed,
and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Jude 16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts;
and their mouth speaketh great swelling words,
having mens persons in admiration because of advantage.

1114.  goes, go´-ace; from goażw goao (to wail); properly, a wizard (as muttering spells), i.e. (by implication) an imposter: — seducer.

When the Levites Prophesied with instruments they performed as SOOTHSAYERS (not-commanded meat judges) or SORCERERS.  THIS NEVER CHANGED.

BECAUSE OF THE NADAB ABIHU EVENT THE DAY OF ATONEMENT AND WORSHIP OF THE SCAPE GOAT WAS IMPOSED.

Azazel is the chief of the Se'irim, or goat-demons, who haunted the desert and to whom most primitive Semitic (most likely non-Hebrew) tribes offered sacrifices.

The Old Testament states that Jeroboam appointed priests for the Se'irim. But Josiah destroyed the places of their worship, as the practices accompanying this worship involved copulation of women with goats.

The Se'irim, or hairy demons as the word itself means, are mentioned in Leviticus 17:7 and 2 Chronicles 11:15 as "goat-demons". Isaiah 34:14 says that the "goat-demons" greet each other amoung the ruins of Edom along with Lilith and other wild beasts.

"The religious poetry of the Ugaritic texts has been shown to have close affinities with the Phraseology of the Hebrew Psalms. From the same sources come references to a class of Temple personnel designated by the term serim, who exercised functions similar to those of the Hebrew singers during the monarchy and later times. Some of the servants of David who were designated in 1 Kings 4:31 by (a) term meaning 'aboriginal' or 'native sons,' and who possessed Canaanite names such as Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, were engaged in various forms of musical activity.

As such they were described by the phrase 'sons of Mahol,' a Hebrew term closely related to (the Greek), used of a semi-circular area in which the Greek chorus danced, and meaning 'members of the orchestral guild.'

"A further reflection of this musical interest became apparent when Megiddo was excavated and the treasure room of the royal palace was uncovered. From this area was recovered a plaque inlaid with ivory, depicting a royal personage seated on a throne. He was drinking from a small bowl, and was being entertained by a court musician who stood before him plucking the strings of a lyre." (See Amos 5; 6; 8)

"With the later days of Solomon came a resurgence of Canaanite idolatry, and when the kingdom began to function as two separate units, the breach between the religious life of the north and south was accentuated." (Harrison, R. K., Introduction to the Old Testament, Eerdmans, p. 335-6, see p. 411).

Machowl (h4235) maw-khole'; the same as 4234; dancing; Machol, an Isr.: - Mahol.

Machowl (h4234) maw-khole'; from 2342; a (round) dance: - dance (- cing).

Chuwl (h2342) khool; or 2427 kheel; a prim. root; prop. to twist or whirl (in a circular or spiral manner), i. e. THE CHIEF MUSICIAN IS NOT IN THE TEXT

ADDITION of musician in the Psalms are numbered "0".  For instance,

Psalms 9:0 To the chief Musician upon Muthlabben, A Psalm of David.
However, SCHOLARS note that these superscriptions really belong to the end of the preceding song.

This phrase is only one word in Hebrew lamenazzeah

Therefore, Psalm 8 would have "the end" or perhaps "amen" at the conclusion.

Psalms 8:8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
Psalms 8:9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!  lamenazzeah or "The End."

Another example

Habakkuk 3:1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth.
Habakkuk 3:19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

Or Hebrew lamenazzeah or "The End."

The Ancient Versions attempt a rendering.  The Sept. has eis to telos = unto, for, or, with a view to the end.  The Arabic, Ethiopic, and Vulgate render it "at the end".  The Chald. renders it (Ps. 45) "to the praise".  The Talmudists hold that it related to Him Who is to come; while Aquila (one of the Sept. Revisers, A.D. 130) renders it "to Nikopoio" = to the giver of victory.

It is clear that a Person was intended by these various renderings; but they appear to be interpretations rather than translations.  Regarded as the former, they may be useful in showing us how the Psalms point to Christ; for He is the end.  It is He Who giveth victory; it is He Who is the Coming One :  and, while the book is called Sepher Tehillim, the Book of Praises, it is He Who "inhabiteth the praises of Israel" (Ps. 22:3)

In each of these isolated Psalms we have the true models on which all the other Psalms are based.

In each case we have
    1.  The
Super-scription, or Title proper.
    2.  The body of the Psalm itself.
    3.  The
Sub-scription.

"The heavens tell of the glory of God and the firmament sings of the work of His hands; day after day and night upon night, there is no voice heard neither words, yet His voice has gone to the ends of the earth, and tells the ends of the ages" - Lamenazzeah.

WHERE INSTRUMENTS ARE INCLUDED THEY ARE NAMED:

Psalms 4:0 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David. .
        With stringed instruments.
Psa 5:1  For the director of music. For flutes.
Psalms 5:0 To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David.
Psa 6:1  For the director of music. With stringed instruments.
Psalms 6:0 To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.
Sheminith: eight; octave, a musical term, supposed to denote the lowest note sung by men’s voices (1 Chr. 15:21; Ps. 6; 12, title)
Psa 43:4  Then will I go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.
Psalms 42:4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

Psa 47:5  God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.
Psalms 47:0 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.
Psalms 47:1 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
Psalms 47:2 For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.
Psalms 47:3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
Psalms 47:4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.
Psalms 47:5 God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Psa 49:4  I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle:
Psa 54:1  For the director of music. With stringed instruments.
Psa 55:1  For the director of music. With stringed instruments.
Psa 61:1  For the director of music. With stringed instruments.
Psa 67:1  For the director of music. With stringed instruments.

This was not a part of the POEMS ascribed to David: David was king and the Jacob-Cursed Levites were under the King and Commanders of the Army.  These psalms were never used for CONGREGATIONAL WORSHIP with or without instrument. Many were boast taunts or simply the sentiment of David which He could NEVER sing AT the temple or in the synagogue were "vocal or instrumental rejoicing" was forbidden.

The Meaning of the Musicians

And Solomon told out three score and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee (excel) them. 2Chr 2:2

And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick. 2Chr.34:12

"Other expressions of popular singing are the working songs, of which the early rabbinic literature speaks with contempt." (Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible, p. 460, Abingdon).

Perhaps the musicans should go out to the construction sites and cheer up the workers. Didn't the musicians magically raise the rocks to build Thebes to give the workmen rest? But, the construction forman would probably call the law because you it be dangerous.

Those who "set forward" the work of the temple excelled which means:

Nacach (h5329) naw-tsakh'; to glitter from afar, to be eminent as a superintendent, especially of the Temple services and its music; also to be permanent, to excel, chief musician, singer, overseer, set forward. (The Worship team or Minister of Music is the overseer or anxiety inducer).

Of which, twenty and four thousand were to set forward the work of the house of the Lord; and six thousand were officers and judges: 1Chr.23:4

God did not authorize the King, Kingdom, Temple, Animal slaughter or the exorcism noise of the Jacob cursed Levites.

There were also women musical singers "for my own pleasure" or my "musical instruments" or "my concubines" but there were never any Levitical women worship team members.

Another description shows that the musical worship teams were the overseers of the group:

Paqiyd (h6496) paw-keed'; from 6485; a superintendent (civil, military or religious): - which had the charge, governor, office, overseer, [that] was set.

Of the sons of Asaph, the singers were over the business of the house of God. Ne.11:22b

h622, Asaph aw-saf´; a primitive root; to gather for any purpose; hence, to receive, take away, i.e. remove (destroy, leave behind, put up, restore, etc.):—assemble, bring, consume, destroy, fetch, gather (in, together, up again), x generally, get (him), lose, put all together, receive, recover (another from leprosy), (be) rereward, x surely, take (away, into, up), x utterly, withdraw.

Melakkah (h4399) mel-aw-kaw'; from the same as 4397; prop. deputyship, i. e. ministry; gen. employment (never servile) or work (abstr. or concr.); also property (as the result of labor): - business, * cattle, * industrious, occupation, (* -pied), * officer, thing (made), use, (manner of) work ([man], -manship).

These Musicians set the WORK PACE for even Jews who were made into slaves after Solomon sold their cities to build a Tyrian-Like temple.

And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my fathers loins. 2 Chron 10:10

For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 2 Chron 10:11

And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. 2 Chron 10:14

And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. EzeK 2:6

CHRIST IN ISAIAH

Bob L. Ross: However, in scriptural nomenclature, there is only one "kind" of music, and that is with instruments. The words, "vocal music," are sometimes used by some, but there is no direct statement, account of action, or implication that this is a Bible expression.

The word MUSIC in the Greek almost always included DANCING. There is not a single word for making music. If you want to SING and PLAY and an INSTRUMENT you must name what is to be PLUCKED.

Is. 23:15 And it shall come to pass in that day,
that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years,
according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall
        Tyre sing as an harlot.

How do you sing AS a harlot?
Is. 23:16 Take an harp, go about the city,
        thou harlot that hast been forgotten;
        make sweet melody,
        sing
many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.

Of this harp or kinowr mentioned also in Psalm 150 and used by the king, Laban understood that it was really useful for getting the enemy so drunk that he didn't know which bride he had married. And again, old Laban knew that he coult "take away knowledge" with a musical going-away party:

Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp? Ge.31:27

The prophets as God's spokesmen against the kings and priests had another view:

And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the Lord, neither consider the operation of his hands. Isa 5:12

Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-haresh Isaiah 16:11

Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered. Isa 23:16

The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. Isa 24:8

And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it. Isa 30:32

And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard. Eze.26:13

THE BOOK OF EZEKIELPublic Spectacles. or Lying Woners

The Instructor will not then bring us to public spectacles; nor inappropriately might one call the racecourse and the theatre "the seat of plagues; " for there is evil counsel as against the Just One and therefore the assembly against Him is execrated. These assemblies, indeed, are full of confusion and iniquity; and these pretexts for assembling are the cause of disorder-men and women assembling promiscuously if or the sight of one another.

In this respect the assembly has already shown itself bad: for when the eye is lascivious the desires grow warm; and the eyes that are accustomed to look impudently at one's neighbours during the leisure granted to them, inflame the amatory desires.

Let spectacles, therefore, and plays that are full of scurrility and of abundant gossip, be forbidden.  For what base action is it that is not exhibited in the theatres? And what shameless saying is it that is not brought forward by the buffoons? And those who enjoy the evil that is in them, stamp the clear images of it at home. And, on the other hand, those that are proof against these things, and unimpressible, will never make a stumble in regard to luxurious pleasures.

Amos 5:23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

Paul made it so clear that Satan has to blind people so they cannot see it as proof that they have not TURNED to Christ and asked Him to wash and give them A new or regenerated spirit. In Romans 15 it was to "glorify God" with one mouth and one mind by using "that which is written." In Ephesians it is DON'T get drunk with wine which points directly to the common worship where people were "methuo" of filled with WINE by being "Fluted down" or "piped down" just as modern taverns cannot exist without "musica" noise.

The word MUSIC is never used in the Bible in connection with worship and it is universally condemned as the MARK of those who will not listen to God's Word. Therefore, he deludes them and MUSIC was more important than drugs in inducing the charismatic or "out of yourself" state where the fall-down drunks, like drug-taking modern musicians, thought that when they got dizzy or puked it was proof that the GODS were sending them a message. David did one of those MUSICAL PRAISES and confessed that it made him VILE.

CHRIST IN EZEKIEL

And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms. Eze 23:11

Agabah (h5691) ag-aw-baw'; from 5689; love (abstr.), i. e. amorousness: - inordinate love.

In the 33rd chapter God warned Ezekiel that they would treat him as an instrument playing prostitute even as they "praised" Him as if He were a prostitute:

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezekiel 33:30

And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people,

and they hear thy words,
but they will not do them
:
for with their mouth they shew much love (egeb),
but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
Ezekiel 33:31
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely (egeb h5690) song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument:

for they hear thy words,
        but they do them not
. Ezekiel 33:32

Consistent with all of the records of the ancients and the message of Jubal in the Bible, instrumental music and singing "romantic" songs instead of the Word of God was spiritual prostitiute.

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you,

and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezek 33:30

And they come unto thee AS the people cometh,

and they sit before thee AS my people,

and they hear thy words,
but they will not do them:
for with their mouth they shew much love, (erotic praise songs)

but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezek 33:31
Ye hypocrites (actors), well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, Matt 15:7

This people draweth nigh unto me

with their mouth,

and honoreth me with their lips;
but their heart is far from me. Matt 15:8

But in vain they do worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matt 15:9

And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:Matt 15:10

But He spoke to them in parables and they couldn't understand because they had the wrong "seeker" motive.
And, lo, thou art unto them

     as a very lovely song

of one that hath a pleasant voice,

and can play well on an instrument:

for they hear thy words,

but they do them not. Ezek 33:32

And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,)

then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. Ezek 33:33
Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man;

but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Matt 15:11

Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? Matt 15:12

But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Matt 15:13

Let them alone:they be blind leaders of the blind.

And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Matt 15:14

The Jews hoped that John wore the soft clothing of a Catamite and they apparently hoped that they could get Jesus to do the choral dance and song:

And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the MEN of this generation? and to what are they like? Luke 7:31

They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. Lu.7:32

Because Jesus ate and drank socially they accused him of being a WINE DRINKER. And because he ate food they accuse Him of being a GLUTTON. However, Jesus in effect called them liars. History knows that the "musical worship teams were the harems of the gods." Sorry about that infusion of historical prooff.

We are told that Lucifer personified or was indwelled the king of Babylon and of Tyre brought wind, string and percussion instruments with him when he was cast out into the world and seduced Even in the garden. The serpent or nachash is a Musical Enchanter. We noted in a fuller form above that:

The king of Tyre as Lucifer is called the "singing and harp playing prostitute." Ezekiel 33 proves that the Jews treated God and Ezekiel like homosexual lovers. Briefly,

And, lo, thou art unto them
. as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice,
. and can play well on an instrument:
. . for they hear thy words,
. . but they do them not. Eze.33:32

This organ was a machine for doing hard work.  By definition making "music" in the modern sense is the most legalistic works based thing you could on:

Organon , to, ( [ergon, erdô] ) I. an implement, instrument, engine of any kind

Ergon  [Ergô] I.work, 1. in Il. mostly of deeds of war, polemęďaerga, 3.a hard piece of work, a hard task, Il.: also, a shocking deed or act,
Ergon [opposite to productive work] alęth-ęs [Opposite of truthful, honest people, opposite of true, unerring oracles] 1. in Il. mostly of works or deeds of war,
3. melody of an instrument, phorminx [Apollyon's instrument]
A. instrument, implement, tool, for making or doing a thing
3.musical instrument, Simon.31, f.l. in A.Fr.57.1 ; homen di'  organôn ekęlei anthrôpous, of Marsyas, Pl.Smp.215c ; aneuorganôn psiloisl ogois ibid., cf. Plt.268b ; o. poluchordaId.R.399c , al.; met'ôidęs kai tinôn organôn Phld.Mus.p.98K. ; of the pipe, Melanipp.2, Telest.1.2

Aristotle Politics 1341b and all the instruments that require manual skill. And indeed there is a reasonable foundation for the story that was told by the ancients about the flute. The tale goes that Athena found a flute and threw it away. Now it is not a bad point in the story that the goddess did this out of annoyance because of the ugly distortion of her features; but as a matter of fact it is more likely that it was because education in flute-playing has no effect on the intelligence, whereas we attribute science and art to Athena

And since we reject professional education in the instruments and in performance  (and we count performance in competitions as professional,  for the performer does not take part in it  for his own improvement, but for his hearers'  pleasure, and that a vulgar pleasure, owing  to which we do not consider performing to be proper for free men, but somewhat menial; and indeed performers do become vulgar, since the object at which they aim is a low one, as vulgarity in the audience usually influences the music, so that it imparts to the artists  who practise it with a view to suit the audience a special kind of personality,  and also of bodily frame because of the movements required)--we must therefore give some consideration to tunes and rhythms, and to the question whether for educational purposes we must employ all the tunes and all the rhythms or make distinctions; and next, whether for those who are working at music for education we shall lay down the same regulation, or ought we to establish some other third one (inasmuch as we see that the factors in music are melody and rhythm, and it is important to notice what influence each of these has upon education), and whether we are to prefer music with a good melody or music with a good rhythm.

Bob Ross:The word "musick" is used 15 times in the Old Testament and refers to instrumental music: 13 times literally, once allegorically (Ecc. 12:4), and once metaphorically (Lam. 3:63).

Here is a typical example:

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. 1 Sam 18:6

The men had been celibate prior to all battles. When they returned it was always the case that women of ill repute went out to celebrate victory and to supply services. Jepthah's daughter got entangled in a musical homecoming she had no right to attend.

Ishshah or Strong's h802 includes the adulteress.
Tabrets is:
Toph
(h8596) tofe; from 8608 contr.; a tambourine: - tabret, timbrel.
Taphaph
(h8608) taw-faf'; a prim. root; to drum, i. e. play (as) on the tambourine: - taber, play with timbrels.
And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts. Na.2:7
Lam. 3:1 I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
Lam. 3:2 He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
Lam. 3:3 Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.
Lam. 3:4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.
Lam. 3:5 He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
Lam. 3:6 He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
Lam. 3:7 He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
Lam. 3:8 Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
Lam. 3:9 He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
Lam. 3:10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
Lam. 3:11 He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.
Lam. 3:12 He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
Lam. 3:13 He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.

Psalms are connect to WARFARE: When people made themselves VILE praising their "god" the only purpose was like the kid who says "My dad can lick your dad."  It didn't always work as with Saul and the Philistines.
Psalmos also appears in the LXX as equivalent to the Hebrew word neginah [5058]. This Hebrew term is used to describe a wide variety of songs. Neginah is translated by psalmos in Lam 3:14 (song), in Lam 5:14 (music) and in Ps 69:12 (song). It is striking to observe that in the LXX translation of Lam 3:14 and Ps 69:12, psalmos, or its verbal form, is used for songs that are not only uninspired but are in fact the product of the wicked, even drunkards, who mocked God and His word. The Hebrew term neginah is used elsewhere in the Hebrew Scriptures of: the songs of the wicked, Job 30:9 (song); the inspired praise of God, Psalm 61 title (Neginah-a song performed on a stringed instrument); and the uninspired praisd of the Lord composed by King Hezekiah, Is 38:20 (my songs).
Lam. 3:14 I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
Derision includes laughter in merriment or defiance, mocked, sport:  this is the RISING UP TO PLAY as the musical idolatry they began at Mount Sinai:

DERISION as David rose up to play:
7832. sachaq, saw-khak´; a primitive root; to laugh (in pleasure or detraction); by implication, to play:deride, have in derision, laugh, make merry, mock(-er), play, rejoice, (laugh to) scorn, be in (make) sport.

7833. shachaq, shaw-khak´; a primitive root; to comminate (by trituration or attrition):—beat, wear.
    Same base as PSALLO.

    SONG of DERISION is
5058. ngiynah, neg-ee-naw´;   ngiynath (Psa. 61: title), neg-ee-nath´; from 5059; properly, instrumental music; by implication, a stringed instrument; by extension, a poem set to music; specifically, an epigram: stringed instrument, musick, Neginoth (plural), song.

Lamentations 3:60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
Lamentations 3:61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me;
Lamentations 3:62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
Lamentations 3:63 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.
Lamentations 3:64 Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.
Lamentations 3:65 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.
Lamentations 3:66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN: THERE ARE NO RELIGIOUS OBSERVATIONS OTHER THAN THE WORD

The sacrificial system Bob and everyone uses as PATTERNISM was quite identical to the Ziggurat or Tower of Babylon.  Christ ordained the Church to keep people FROM any of the public sacrifices which God had not commanded. The kingdom of God does not come to religious observations.

Observātiō ōnis, observo, a watching, observance, investigation: observationes animadvertebant, your searches for evidence: siderum.— Circumspection, care, exactness: summa in bello movendo.

Religious observations are carefully crafted to take control of all of one's attention. That is the worship concept with is to be directed only to God.

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).
Christ says that God did not COMMAND that to which He ABANDONED them and modern churches.
Jer. 7:21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh.
Jer. 7:22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them
in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt,
        concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
Jer. 7:23 But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:
and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
Jer. 7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward, and not forward.
Jer. 7:25 Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day
I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets,
daily rising up early and sending them:

Jer. 7:26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck:
they did worse than their fathers.

The Church of Christ in contrast to the protestants understands that the Church as an ekklesia or synagogue of Christ (school only) is NOT built upon Bob Ross' etal foundation of the Jacob-cursed and God abandoned tribe of Levi.  That makes those who curse others for NOT falling into musical idolatry the killers of the prophets who universally condemn the Civil-Military-Clergy complex Christ call robbers and parasites: these were the Scribes and Pharisees Jesus called hypocrites by quoting from Isaiah or Ezekiel. Christ called them self-preachers, singers and instrument players:
Luke 11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God,
I will send them prophets and apostles,
and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
Luke 11:50 That the blood of all the prophets,
which was shed from the foundation of the world,
         may be required of this generation;
Luke 11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias,
which perished between the altar and the temple:
verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.
Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers!
for ye have taken away the key of knowledge:
ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

Bob Ross sides with the Cainites using Jubal (trumpet) as the pattern for instrumental music NOW to be used in the church.
Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners,
        but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

Ephesians 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together
for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
The pattern of the Cainite like Jerusalem temple is that if any musician or instrument player went NEAR any holy thing or into any holy place was to be executed just as the Levites had to execute 3,000 of their brethren because they engaged in musical worship on the rest day supposed to be devoted to God and His Word.

So you have to trust people who dredge the sumps of a city called SODOM and the Mother of Harlots or you can trust in Christ in the prophets who repudiated them all as robbers and parasites.

You will notice that they are forced to use the warriors or the sacrificial musicians who "made the lambs dumb before the slaughter" and never to a congregational worship.
The Spirit OF Christ in the prophets DENIED that God had commanded sacrifices or burnt offerings. Assuredly the only command through Moses was that the Levites should "stand in ranks" and make a great NOISE.  This would warn Bob Ross etal that if they came NEAR any holy thing or place they would be executed. MUSIC IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

Bob Ross: 10. "If musical instruments were under the Law, did not the Law end with the New Testament?"

Many things under the Law have been "fulfilled" such as the patterns, figures, and shadows, and we are told about this in Hebrews and in other epistles. However, the use of Psalms in worship has been re-promulgated (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16), and instruments were used with Psalms.

One is animal sacrifices

Music which promotes the spiritual, the honorable, the pure, the lovely, and things of "praise" (Phil. 3:8) is pleasing to the Lord. Music which promotes vanity, the carnal, the impure, and the sinful is not pleasing to the Lord. Like words, music can be used for both good and evil. Christians are to use both for the glory of God (Col. 3:17).

Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. Phil 4:9

Bob Ross: 9. "How do we know that Jesus participated in the use of instrumental music in worship?"

The practice of Jesus and his parents was to worship in accordance with the Law of God at the Temple in Jerusalem (Luke 2:40-43). Included in that worship was the use of instrumental music (II Chronicles 5:1-14; 30:21). Also, since Jesus was "made under the Law" (Gal. 4:4, 5) and came to fulfill the Law (Matt. 5:17, 18), it was of necessity that He obey in all respects (Heb. 5:7-10).

The Lord had incorporated musical instruments in the approved worship, so we must conclude that Jesus worshipped accordingly, otherwise He did not do all that the Law required.

Not true: The Sacrificial system was effectively dead by the time of Jesus: He endorsed the synagogue as school of the Bible.  Not even Jesus was ever INSIDE of even the inner court where not-commanded sacrifices might take place.  However, there is no record of instrumenta in the temple at that time.

Jesus went to the OUTER court and never participated with instrumental worship.  All civillians had to be OUTSIDE the gates and the loud instrumental NOISE warned them if they did not exit they could be executed.

Bob Ross: 8. "Does Ephesians 5:19 mean that the heart is the 'instrument'?"

Some who reject musical instruments in worship contend that Eph. 5:19 is "figurative," or "metaphorical;" however, this idea goes "begging" for any support in the Scriptures. James D. Bales, an anti-instrument writer, even acknowledges that there is "no passage" which says "the instrument typified the melody of the heart," yet this is the theory of those who oppose music.

"Strings of the heart" is not a Bible phrase. "Singing and making melody in your heart" simply means the same thing as in other passages where something is done "in" or "with" the heart.

All obedience and worship are to be "in the heart," for this is what God's Law requires (Deut. 6:4; Mark 12:30). We are to worship "in spirit" and "in truth" (John 4:23, 24), but this does not mean that acts of worship are eliminated. There is no example of "making melody" in the heart in the "hidden" sense, if we go by Scripture.

This is the new PLACE which replaces mountains and temples and "churches." In SPIRIT means that God only seeks us in OUR spirit as it gives heed to THE TRUTH. Giving heed is Paul's only collective worhip word.

How often have I chewed my heart with rage!
My pleasures? Very few; in fact just four.
My pains? Far more than all the grains of sand.

Let's try to recall a case of real euphoria.
I know! It's something my heart rejoiced to see:
that million-dollar fine coughed up by Cleon.1
That really gave me joy! I love the Knights
for that indictment: a banner day for Greece!

But then I had another pain, quite tragic:
I was waiting for a play by Aeschylus,2
then heard, "Theognis, bring your chorus on."
Imagine how that shook up my poor heart!

Another joy was after Moschus played:
Dexitheus did some Theban country-tunes.
But recently I died and went to hell,
when Chaeris played the Anthem on his flute.5

But never since I first began to wash
with soap have I cried such tears as I cry now,
whenever the Assembly holds a meeting
and all the seats are empty, just like now,
while everybody's gossiping in the market
and trying to avoid the summoner.

The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow's heart sing. Jb.29:13

So my heart laments for Moab like a flute;
it laments like a flute
for the men of Kir Hareseth. The wealth they acquired is gone. Je.48:36

My heart laments for Moab like a harp,
my inmost being
for Kir Hareseth. Is.16:11

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.Lu.1:47

Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Ac.2:26

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. Lu.10:21

There is NO connection between psallo (melody) and music. Because psallo is PRIMARILY a shooting with an arrow to hit the literal heart, and because "hymns" impact the heart or feelings, "shooting out hymns" was a metaphor and you "twang" the heart strings.
The bowstring touch'd her breast, so strong she drew;
Whizzing in air the fatal arrow flew.
At once the twanging bow and sounding dart
The traitor heard, and felt the point within his heart.

The lyre of Phoebus [Apollo, Apollyon] to thy notes attuned
Will not protect thee; farther stretch thy wings;

Go, wanton, skim along the Delian lake,
Or wilt thou steep thy melody in blood.

Look, what strange bird comes onwards; wouldst thou fix
Beneath the battlements thy straw-built nest?

My singing bow shall drive thee hence; begone,
Or to the banks of Alpheus, gulfy stream, grace
Or to the Isthmian grove; there hatch thy young;

Bob L. Ross: I Cor. 15:52;

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 1 Cor 15:52

In the twinkling of an eye is a SHORT musical worship ritual. The idea of the trump or triumph is a PANIC CREATING quavering sound which is used to send SIGNALS and never to MAKE MUSIC. The Levitical trumpeters tried to TRIUMPH OVER Jesus but he will get the last sound:

Salpizo (g4537) sal-pid'-zo; from 4536; to trumpet, i.e. sound a blast (lit. or figurative.): - (which are yet to) sound (a trumpet).

Salpigc (g4536) sal'-pinx; perh. from 4535 (through the idea of quavering or reverberation): a trumpet: - trump (- et).

Heb. 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh.
For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth,
much more shall not we escape,

Heb. 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying,
Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Heb. 12:27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken,
as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Heb. 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved,
let us have grace, whereby we may
serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
Heb. 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

"The earliest meaning of the Greek word sumphonia (Aramaic: sumponeyâ) was "sounding together," that is, the simultaneous playing of instruments or voices producing a concord. Jerome, commenting on Luke 15:25 where the word occurs, noted: "The sumphonia is not a kind of instrument, as some Latin writers think, but it means concordant harmony. It is expressed in Latin by consonantia." Coxon concludes as follows [p. 36]: Resource

"The word symphonia was used by the Greeks in reference to notes sounding together in harmony and by extension meant an "ensemble" or "band" rather than a musical form.

The word implies a pleasant concord of different notes and has been used in fields other than music to denote a pleasing combination of various elements. In the New Testament Gospel According to Luke (King James Version), symphonia is translated as "musick," as distinct from choroi, "dancing."

This word is used of the homecoming party of the prodigal son. There would have been singing, drinking and feasting. This has nothing to do with WORSHIP.

THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Bob L. Ross: I Rev. 8:2; 5:8; 14:2; 15:2). It appears that the Lord has his own "musical staff" in the heavenlies, and the instruments are stamped "made in Heaven" (if stamped at all)!

I suspect that Bob Ross will be involved in a TRUMPET QUARTET when the angel sounds. My honest belief is that the TRUMPETS have sounded in most churches in a miraculous end-time prophecy of the Babylon harlot. (Rev 18:22)

And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. Re.8:2

And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. Rev 8:5

And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound Re.8:13

NO ONE PLAYS HARPS IN HEAVEN.

The message of the other angel to the LIVING on earth was to: "Preach the gospel."

Bob L. Ross: I 2. "Is not singing a kind of music in the Bible?"

We have nothing against singing; in fact, we love it! We could take all our space and then some in extolling singing. But in the Bible, "musick" is not used of singing. Singing has been so closely associated with instrumental music, we usually use the word "music" to cover singing, as well as other related items such as lyrics, musical notes, performances, etc.

"Music" is always used in the context of people using "instruments."  Instruments make noice.

The musicians of Revelation are the MUSES identified by John in the symbolic language as the LOCUSTS or musical performers. They are under the rule of Apollo, Abaddon or Apollyon. Apollo is the "father" just like the Jubal family of "twanging bowstrings to send 'singing' arrows into your heart or as a sexual term, of thieves and of liars. The prostitute church will be under the domination of musicians whose persona has always been perverse.

Understanding the meaning and limitations of both ekklesia and synagogue, when Paul commanded that we SPEAK the Biblical text, the word is the opposite of poetry or music. The singing AND melody was in the PLACEof the heart where God seeks our worship.  You cannot get a real harp in the real heart.

And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone (concubines or prostitutes) shall be heard no more at all in thee; Rev 18:22

HISTORIC TESTIMONY AGAINST INSTRUMENTS

Bob Ross:1To condemn the organ because it was put to use in a Roman Catholic Church at any given time would be like condemning church buildings because a Roman Catholic church built a building.

The Catholic Church--called The Church of Christ--never used the organ to accompany congregational singing. The Precentor spoke or cantillated the Psalms as directly commanded. The organ "performed" during processionals, intermissions or recessionals which was not part of the "mass."  No congregational singing existed until after Calvin because NONE of the Bible is metrical and cannot be sung tunefully.

In fact the Catholic church never followed the Biblical direct commands to teach "that which is written" or "that which is taught" in connection with the assembly with an organ to accompany it.  It fact, if you know a bit about the Bible you understand that none of it is metrical and you could not sing or accompany tunefully any of the commanded text if your life dependedon it.  The organ was never introduce by any church authority but by private individuals. There were put into Cathedrals all built at the site of Fair towns and were used to perform for entertainment.  Never in the official liturgy but for processions, intermissions or recessional.

Congregational singing in a tuneful, unison form began only after the Reformation and those accustomed to the performance in the churches called for setting the commanded Psalms to a simple melody.  Indeed, "melody as tunefulnesss belongs to the 19th century."  And simple harmony did not begin to develop until after 1200.

Bob Ross:1 To reject music because "we find no account" of its use by professed Christians "before" any given time in history is to make recorded history the measure of what is scriptural in what we are to believe and practice. One might ask Mr. Lipscomb if his GOSPEL ADVOCATE magazine or anything similar was published before "1290?" If not, was it an "innovation?"

Yes, there was a host of material written from the first days of the church and we know that singing as an ACT did not begin until imposed in the year 373. This split the east from the west churches as music always caused discord.

The replacement of the psalms with human compositions was a product of the "high church" movement which gave protestants the same authority as the Catholic church to "change with the times." However:

"The first three centuries of the church witnessed many controversies; some of them concerned themselves directly with music. The most important of these issues were:

(a) organized versus spontaneous praying and singing;
(b) scriptural versus
extrascriptural poems;
(c) fusion with
Hellenistic music;
(d) vocal versus
instrumental music;
(e) the rise of
monasticism and its influence upon ecclesiastical chant." (Interpreter's Dict of the Bible, Music, p. 467).

The first problem occurred when the doxologies of the Bible which were like Psalms were replaced by "a great number of spontaneous and highly individualized doxologies."
........ However, the non-Biblical responses were ratified and codified at the second synod of Vaison in 529.
........ This writing of their own "song book" virtually destroyed spontaneous or Biblical worship.

However, sectarian introduction of any thing not Biblical is almost always based on commercial interest (more attendees, etc.)

"The large displacement of the Psalter by other matter of praise in the Protestant Churches during the last one hundred years has been due, no so much to the lack of appreciation of the Psalms,
........ as to the commercial enterprise of music publishers." (Int Std Bible Ency., Psalms, p. 2494B).

Bob Ross:1 Regardless of what one "finds" or does "not find" in incomplete historical records, the fact is musical instruments are revealed in the Bible,

they were used in worship,
and they are not excluded from Christian worship
by any New Testament teaching.

When instruments of exorcism were sounded worship meant that they BOWED or fell on their faces.  There is not a single instance of the congregation gathering for singing and instrumental accompaniment.

ROSS LIES ABOUT JAMES A. HARDING.

Bob Ross:13. "Where did the idea come from that David did wrong in using musical instruments in worship?"

See that The Civil-Military-Clergy conducted animal sacrifices just like the nations to which God had abandoned them. One does not have to command people making war and shedding blood to use the military warrior musicians to panic the enemy.

God had abandoned Israel to worship the starry host: when they demanded a king God gave them kings in His anger and took them away in His Anger. They kings were ordained to carry out the death and captivity sentence imposed because of Musical Idolatry.  The Jacob cursed Levitical instrument players were under the KING and COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY.

Stephen (Acts 7 you missed in sermons, songs and classes) says that:
God gave (by Grace) David a TENT which permitted the "worship of the starry host."
God loves people even when they turn to idolatry. However, David is not a PATTERNISM for approvel even under the Monarchy.
But, David built God a HOUSE
But, God does not LIVE IN nor is worshipped in houses built by human hands: God is worshipped IN the place of the human spirit which ALL forms of "music" intends to shut down so that you watch THE EFFEMINATE performance and therefore worship THEM.

I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath. Hosea 13:11

There is incontrovertible archaeological evidence for the antiquity of the musical guilds themselves. The Phoenicians (Canaanites) outshone their contemporaries in music, and the Israelites were early influenced by them.

Musical guilds of the Hebrews may be traced back in some instances,
to
old Canaanite families whose designations, such as Hemen the Ezrahite (I Chron. 2:6),
became a part of later Hebrew family names." (Unger, Merril, Archaeology and the Old Testament, Zondervan, P. 216-7)

Of Psalm 78 Anderson wrote--

"Here the Psalmist affirms that the old sacred history which centered in the Exodus and the Conquest has come to an end. Yahweh has made a new beginning by raising up David and selecting Mount Zion as his sanctuary." Anderson, Bernhard W., Understanding the Old Testament, p. 520, 3rd, Prentice-Hall, p

"In the kingdom of Judah... there developed a conception of the covenant that was fundamentally at odds with the northern Mosaic tradition. David, the architect of the United Kingdom, had tried to unify the twelve tribes under his rule by taking over the religious traditions and symbols of the old Tribal Confederacy.

But in the circle of the Davidic court a new theology developed, one that in the long run all but eclipsed the covenant faith that had been inherited from the Mosaic period.

According to this view, Yahweh bound himself by a covenant oath to David, promising to preserve the Davidic line and to spare the Davidic kingdom 'for the sake of my servant David,' as Isaiah is reported to have said (Isa. 37:35; see II Sam. 7).

In short, Yahweh's sovereignty was limited by the covenant, for he was no longer free to choose or reject Israel, as Amos maintained, but was obligated to preserve her." (Anderson, p. 333).

"The covenant festival celebrated in the south was unique in some respects, owing to the profound changes brought about by the Davidic monarchy. It will be remembered that David, in order to support his regime with the religious sanctions of the Tribal Confederacy, had brought the Ark to his capital and planned to install it in a temple. David's plan, which was realized by Solomon, called for a reinterpretation of Yahweh's covenant with Israel. The royal court of Jerusalem advanced a new theology of king and temple, the substance of which was that Yahweh had elected the Davidic king as his 'son' and had elected Zion as his sanctuary, the place of his sacramental presence.

"The effect of this new theology, especially under Solomon's influence, was to modify Israel's worship. The covenant renewal festivals of the former Confederacy were transformed into fall New Year celebrations of the foundation of the Temple and the election of the Davidic house.

It was not until the great reformation of Josiah that the Mosaic covenant tradition was discovered." (Anderson, Bernhard W., Understanding the Old Testament, p. 519, 3rd, Prentice-Hall, p)

David's change

"The book of Psalms contain new doctrine after the Law of Moses. And after the writing of Moses, it is the second book of doctrine...

(David) first gave to the Hebrews a new style of psalmody, why which he abrogates the ordinances established by Moses with respect to sacrifices, and introduces the new hymn and a new style of jubilant praise in the worship of God; and throughout his whole ministry he teaches very many othe things that went beyond the law of Moses."

worthy of bearing the name of father of the Saviour himself;

and he first gave to the Hebrews a new style of psalmody, by which he abrogates the ordinances established by Moses with respect to sacrifices, and introduces the new hymn and a new style of jubilant praise in the worship of God; and throughout his whole ministry he teaches very many other things that went beyond the law of Moses. (Fragment of Commentary by Hippolytus, bishop of Rome, Ante-Nicene, V, p. 170)

Bob Ross:So far as I can find, the chief source of this idea is the Methodist commentator, Adam Clarke (1762-1832). He was very antagonistic to the use of instruments, contrary to the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. I recently went thru Wesley's 8-volume JOURNAL to check on his views and I found numerous entries where Wesley used and commended musical instruments. He himself played a flute. Clarke misappropriates a remark of Wesley's which was actually against poor organ music, but otherwise Wesley had high praise for good organ music and said he would like to have an organ in all the Methodist chapels.

It is to be noted that, when at last musical instruments were attached to those national acts of homage to Israel's political king, Jehovah,

it was not by the authority or intervention of the high priest, the religious head of the nation,
but by that of the political viceroy
. David's horns, harps and organs were therefore the appointed instruments of the national acts of homage to Jehovah. (Note: under the king and the commanders of the army)The church now is not a nation, but purely a spiritual kingdom, which is not of this world. Hence

there is no longer room in her worship for the horns, harps and organs,
any more than for swords and stonings in her government
, or human kings and high priests in her institutions.

The Methodists derive from the Anglican or Church of England: they are not a protestent group but the English version of the Catholic Church.

Bob L. Ross: One reason for this is a particular theory about the relation of the Old Testament to the New Testament. It is thought by some that we are "not under the Old Testament." But while there are indeed a number of things which changed with the coming of Jesus Christ, these are carefully delineated in New Testament writings and we must not go "above that which is written" (I Cor. 4:6). The scriptures of both testaments are to be studied and "rightly divided" (2 Tim. 2:15). Jesus, the Apostles, and the early church had the Old Testament; the Gospels and the Epistles came along as the apostolic days transpired. The Old Testament is "for our learning" and is "scripture" (Romans 15:4; John 5:39; 2 Tim. 3:15). Paul admonishes us to use "psalms" in our singing, and these are admittedly the Psalms of the Old Testament (Ept. 5:19; Col. 3:16).

Bob L. Ross and most missed the fact that The Law of Moses said nothing about the use of musical instruments: Exodus 32 defines instrumental music on the rest day as beyond redemption.  The command is to build the church or educate the church on the prophets and apostles. Paul would understand psalms to be mizmors: there are only 50 of these not dedicated to certain people and role and NONE of them include an instrument.

They are written for our learning: that is the only resouce to be used in the assembly.  Paul specificially commanded that we SPEAK the inspired material: speak is the opposite of poetry or music.  Paul commanded that we use "one MIND and one MOUTH" and that clearly excludes instruments if we are interested in EDUCATING rather than entertaining.

Martin Luther wrote about the difference between the LAW and Prophets: Christ in Isaiah said that the Jews had a covenant with death and hell.

While writers include everything before Matthew as the The Old Testament, the Kingdom Period was a violent rejection of God with the demand for an earthly Monarchy. God knew that they wanted to worship like the pagans and they would but for a short period.

David Lipscomb (1831-1917), the "god-father" of the Church of Christ, followed Clarke's idea about David and he wrote a series of articles against music in THE GOSPEL ADVOCATE magazine in 1895. His ideas were accepted by many, but his associate, James Harding (1848-1922), did not agree with Lipscomb, and many other Church of Christ writers also differ with him.

That's a lie because it is false and intends to hurt.

Bob Ross cannot find anyone in any of the denominations in early America who did not teach and write the same thing: of course anyone who can read would gag at the notion that 2 Chronicles 29 is our command to used instruments.

J. W. McGarvey And A Very Dark Spot By James A. Harding

Christian Leader and The Way

Vol. 25, No. 49 (December 5, 1911), 8.

James A. Harding faulted J.W.McGarvey for not being more brutal with those who imposed instruments and refused to let him object.  He would continued to preach but not fellowship at an instrumental church or anywere.

In this paragraph it is boldly and strongly affirmed that we are to mark and turn away from “them that are causing divisions and occasions of stumbling,” contrary to the doctrine we learned.  The inspired apostle says they who cause these divisions serve not our Lord Christ.  He affirms that they serve their own bellies, and beguile the hearts of the innocent.

Among us, who profess to take the Bible and the Bible alone as our rule of faith and practice, who and what have caused the divisions that have occurred in our churches?  There is no room for a doubtful answer to this question.  For fifty years I have been deeply, personally interested in the Church, and an eager reader of its literature; and I know that more congregations have been divided among us by pressing instrumental music into them than by all other causes. Next to the organ, the missionary societies have been our greatest causes of division and strife.

And here arises the matter in which, it seems to me, he failed: while he would not abide in a church that regularly used the instrument, it was not at all uncommon for him to accept an invitation to preach for a congregation that regularly used it.  He often did this.  And herein, it seems to me, is the dark spot in this wonderfully bright life.

If Lard, McGarvey, Graham, Grubbs, and men of like faith, had resolutely marked and turned away from them that were causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling contrary to the doctrine they learned; if they had resolutely turned away from them, if they had marked them as they really are—as men who do not serve the Lord Christ, as men who serve their own bellies, as men who are enemies to God and his Church, who by their smooth and fair speech beguile the hearts of the innocent—if the brethren I have mentioned had resolutely refused to have any fellowship whatever with these dividers of churches, these lovers of their own bellies, we would have had a very different story to tell now.  What they ought to have done then, we ought to do now.

We ought to have no fellowship whatever, religiously, with those who have divided, or are dividing churches.  Unless they repent, confess their sins, and turn resolutely form them, all Christians must mark and avoid them—or bring upon themselves the curse of an outraged God.  – Potter Bible College, Bowling Green, Ky., November 28, 1911.

If you read or hear someone who condemns David on musical instruments, the person probably picked it up from Clarke, Lipscomb, or another person who followed their ideas.

Bob L. Ross: 4. "If we take instrumental music from the Old Testament, would we not also have to take animal sacrifices and everything else?"

We are authorized to use "psalms" (Eph. 5:19), not to offer animal sacrifices. Many things taught in the Old Testament are still lawful; many things which are called "patterns, figures, and shadows" were fulfilled. The Law is still "good, if a man use it lawfully" (I Timothy 1:8). But there is perhaps nothing about which there is as much confusion as the Law and its relation to New Testament teachings. This was also the case in apostolic times, and the apostles often had to address the problem. And today, we are not authorized to subtract anything from God's Law without authority for so doing (Deut. 4:2; Matt. 5:19; Mark 7:5-13). Neither are we to add to His Law.

GOD DID NOT COMMAND ANYTHING IN THE SCRIBAL ACCOUNTS OF AN ABANDONED NATION:

Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. Jeremiah 7:8

Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely,
        and
burn incense unto Baal,
        and
walk after other gods whom ye know not; Jeremiah 7:9

And come and stand before me in this HOUSE, which is called by my name, and say,
We are delivered to do all these abominations? Jeremiah 7:10

> Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel;
Put your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat flesh. Jeremiah 7:21

21. Put ... burnt offerings unto ... sacrifices ... eat flesh--Add the former (which the law required to be wholly burnt) to the latter (which were burnt only in part), and "eat flesh" even off the holocausts or burnt offerings. As far as I am concerned, saith Jehovah, you may do with one and the other alike. I will have neither (Isa 1:11 Ho 8:13 Am 5:21,22).

Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. Isaiah 1:10

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord:
I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the
fat of fed beasts;
and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. Isaiah 1:11

When ye come to appear before me,
        who hath required
this at your hand, to tread my courts? Isaiah 1:12

Bring no more vain oblations;
        incense
is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths,
        the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with;
it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Isaiah 1:13

> But this thing commanded I them, saying,
Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people:
and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you,
that it may be well unto you. Jeremiah 7:23

God hath not said, thou shalt not sing and play instruments and pretend that you are worshiping Me.

> But they HEARKENED NOT, nor inclined their ear,
but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart,
and went backward, and not forward. Jeremiah 7:24
