Romans 10

We call on the name of the Lord only at Baptism FOR the remission of sins.

THIS IS BIBLE, REFERENCES AND COMMENTARY: DON'T TRY TO READ IT LIKE A SERMON OR DIME NOVEL.

Romansans 1

OUTLINE FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO READ THE WORD AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN.

Those who ridicule OBEDIENCE are living in a fool's paradise. They simply do not know the GOD of the Bible.

Heb.11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: f
........... or he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
........... and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Acts 15:17 That the
........... residue of men might seek after the Lord,
........... and all the Gentiles,
........... upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord,
........... who doeth all these things.

Romansans 9-11 shows Paul stopping in the middle of his letter to the Romansans and inserting what has been felt to be a prepared Synagogue presentation.

THE SUBJECT:

The error is that Jews believed they were predestinated and were TRULY righteous because they were circumcised and lived UNDER the Law.

They believed that if GENTILES could be saved without becoming Proselytes then 1) God had failed them, or 2) the Word had failed. Paul's task is to say that THEY failed.

Paul proves that the LAW was their TEACHER (the ROD was the Oriental Incentive). THE LAW was a legal system: if you "run" 1,000 green lights you do not earn any merits. If you then run 1 red light the police will probably PUNISH you.

IF you believe that Jesus is the Son of God or Christ of God, and you believe that his blood abrogates the Sacrificial System, then you CAN be saved. Both Jew and Gentile were on the same playing field and FAITH in Jesus Christ was the END OF THE LAW. THE FAITH is not just simple personal belief which as NO supernatural power: it is now THE FAITH OF CHRIST or FAITH IN THE OPERATION OF GOD Who raised Jesus which makes ALL people acceptable and candidates for discipleship.

THE SUBJECT is THE GOSPEL and Paul's demand is that THE GOSPEL must be believed AND must be OBEYED.

Romans 10:1 BRETHREN, my hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

Romans 10:2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God,
........... but not according to knowledge.

Romans 10:3 For they, being ignorant of Gods righteousness,
........... and going about to establish their own righteousness,
............have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

Submitting is the Greek Hupotasso (g5293) hoop-ot-as'-so; fRomans 5259 and 5021; to subordinate; reflex. to OBEY: - be UNDER obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.

Romans 10:4 For Christ is
........... the end of the law for righteousness
........... to every one that believeth.

Righteousness means to be WITHIN the circle of God's grace. It means that no one is ceremonially defiled. It does not mean that people are saved simply because Jesus died on the cross.

A Jew who believed in Jesus necessarily GRADUATED fRomans the Law.

Romans 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law,
........... That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

THE LAW WAS ADDED BECAUSE OF TRANSGRESSION. THAT TRANSGRESSION WAS MUSICAL IDOLATRY which Paul defines by quoting Moses:

Romans 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise,
........... Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven?
........... (that is, to bring Christ down fRomans above:)

Romans 10:7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep?
........... (that is, to bring up Christ again fRomans the dead.)

Romans 10:8 But what saith it?
........... The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart:
........... that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart,
........... that thou
mayest do it. Deut 30:14

CYCLE ONE:

Romans 10:9 That if thou
........... shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and
........... shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him fRomans the dead,
........... ........... thou shalt be saved.

NOT YET!

Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness;
........... and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

CYCLE TWO: all who believe and practice righteousness are accepted. Both Jew and Gentile are ceremonially purified so that they can CALL upon the name of the Lord.

This is not FAITH as a one step process of salvation: the SUBJECT is WHOSOEVER and NO DIFFERENCE.

Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

A DISCIPLE will want to see what ASHAMED meant.

Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek:

Romans 10:13 for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
........... For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Zep 3:9 For then will
............ I turn to the people a pure language,
............ that they may all call upon the name of the Lord,
............ to serve him with one consent.

Joel 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, AND in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee, because of the Lord thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee. Isa 55:5

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Isaiah 55:6

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7

Return in Greek means to be converted:

Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come fRomans the presence of the Lord;

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God. Zechariah 13:9

Isa 4:4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem fRomans the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good;
and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil:
for
of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. Luke 6:45

And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Luke 6:46

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: Luke 6:47

And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified
............ in the name of the Lord Jesus,
............ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:11

CYCLE THREE:

Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him
............in whom they have not believed?
........... and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
........... and how shall they hear without a preacher?
........... And how shall they preach, except they be sent?

Romans 10:15 as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them
............ that preach the gospel of peace,
............ and bring glad tidings of good things

Euaggelizo (g2097) yoo-ang-ghel-id'-zo; fRomans 2095 and 32; to announce good news ("evangelize") espec. the gospel: - declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel).

CYCLE FOUR: those who HAVE believed HAVE obeyed the gospel

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
............ For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Paul preached THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST and this chapter IS about THE GOSPEL as opposed to THE LAW. Take a good look at the table.

Romans 10:15 as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them
.... that preach the gospel of peace,
.....and bring glad tidings of good things

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world,
.....and preach the gospel to every creature.

Romans 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved

For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Romans 10:18 But I say, Have they not heard?
............ Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth,
............ and their words unto the ends of the world.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

Col 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

Col 1:6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away fRomans the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Romans 16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, ............ ............ according to the commandment of the everlasting God,
............ made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

Romans 10:19 But I say, Did not Israel know?
............ First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy
............ by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

Romans 10:20 But Esaias is very bold, and saith,
............ I was found of them that sought me not;
.............I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

Romans 10:21 But to Israel he saith,
............ All day long I have stretched forth my hands
............ unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

WHAT IS IT TO BE DISOBEDIENT:

Apeitheo (g544) ap-i-theh'-o; fRomans 545; to disbelieve (wilfully and perversely): - not believe, disobedient, obey not, unbelieving.

1 Pet 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient,
............ when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,
............ while the ark was a preparing,
............ wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

1 Pet 3:21NAS And corresponding to that,
............ baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt fRomans the flesh,
............ but an appeal to God for a good conscience--
............ through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

1 Pet 4:16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

1 Pet 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God:
............ and if it first begin at us,
............ what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

The house of God or family is the church of Christ:

1Ti.3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

Those who were baptized were added to the church:

Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. [were being saved]

1 Pet 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved,
............ where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

1 Pet 4:19 Wherefore, let them that suffer according to the will of God
............ commit the keeping of their souls to him
............ in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

People who argue with God about OBEDIENCE are gainsayers and they call God a LIAR:

Antilego (g483) an-til'-eg-o; fRomans 473 and 3004; to dispute, refuse: - answer again, contradict, deny, gainsay (-er), speak against.

All who FEAR GOD and WORK RIGHTEOUSNESS are ACCEPTABLE or righteous in the sense of NOT being ceremonially unable to come to God. Those who BELIEVE and make the confession that Jesus is the Son of God ARE NOT HINDERED fRomans being baptized to WASH AWAY THEIR SINS which is the meaning here of CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD REQUESTION SALVATION.
