Making the whole story of our lives about the salvation found in physical intimacy is to miss the grander picture of intimate salvation promised to Beloved Humanity by God the Lover.
my pastoral impulse this week is to proclaim the message of the Song of Songs. And heres why: We desperately need public, communal language about sex, and we have an oft-overlooked resource in the Bible.
Song of Songs is unique in several ways, one of which is the fact that its the only place in Scripture where a womans voice leads the conversation (the woman speaks 61 of 117 verses). In light of what weve heard lately, it seems like a good time to let a wise woman speak about sexual activity thats right and good, a woman who not only speaks but sings and shouts about intimate, sensual, erotic passion. And in all her talk about kissing, touching, tasting, and smelling, she does not offend with crass or vulgar language. She exemplifies how its possible to speak about sex and intimacy appropriately. We might do well to let her teach us a thing or two.Sara Barton
Hoarding or relinquishing rights to perform religious rituals is the meaning of legalism. 'Ministry' is very treacherous because, as Paul warned, it is hard to tell the difference between dedicated teachers of the Word ready to suffer and die, and the many who corrupted the Word by just selingl it (greatly modified) at retail. The retailer dilutes and marks up the product and sells is with some kind of body charisma: that corruption is called prostitution. As one remedy, Jesus invited but accepted disciples one-by-one to 'rest' and "come learn of me." It is important that evangelists deliver the Word as it has been taught to the called or invited. We are aliens and sojourners or Lost Spirits in a world or Cosmic-Order for which Jesus would not even pray. Don't worry about loosing out on the loot from the widows:
- Paul EXCLUDES both males and females from any performing-for-hire roles in the School of the Word. The direct command and approved examples was to assemble yourselves ONCE a week on the rest day to read, memorize and mutually confess the resources handed down in written form. Payne: Clement of Alexandria ( pre AD 215) cites 1 Cor 14.6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 20 yet calls both men and women without distinction to silence in church,
indicating that 1 Cor 14.345 was not in his text of 1 Corinthians.
Further evidence of a text of 1 Corinthians 14 without vv. 345 is that none of the Apostolic Fathers or the next generation of church fathers gives any indication of awareness of 1 Cor14.345.

Godly Disciples of Christ will not be seduced into robbing widows so she can have HER performing ministry.
Gender-focused Churches of Christ are not related to the historic Church of Christ (the Rock) which is defined inclusively and exclusively as the Church in the wilderness. This Church of Christ intended to Quarantine the godly people from the Jacob-cursed and God-abandoned Levites. Because of musical idolatry at Mount Sinai God separated the Godly School of the Word as the only meaning of spiritual worship, from the Civil-Military-Clergy complex which had been turned over to worship the starry host (Acts 7) which was Babylonianism. The men bowed down to the sesun in the east while the women brought abominations even into the later temple: the matriarchal women (and a few strange men) worshipped the Queen of Heaven.
If you follow these men claiming a latter-day understanding then you must agree that all of the accounts from Eve in the garden of Eden to the Babylon Mother of Harlots (Revelation) were just lies or ignorance. You must ignore the accounts that out of all godly women it will be women-despised women who fall into the ceremonial forms or religion directed at stirring up the emotions to make it impossible for either male or female to focus upon the WORD of God.
The Pattern for the Church in the wilderness and continued beyond Jesus made both Jew and GentileWISE UNTO SALVATION. The Assembly (qahal, synagogue, ekklesia) is so PATTERNED to prevents the common INVASION of PROSTITUTES:

Ishtar appears to have been associated at an early period with the Sumerian goddess Inanna and both deities are depicted with symbols of fertility, such as the date palm, and of aggression, such as the lion. The iconography survived relatively unchanged for over a thousand years. Here, Ishtar's astral quality is also emphasized: above her crown is a representation of the planet Venus. [Lucifer, Zoe, Eve]
The goddess could be worshipped as both male and female Ishtar, reflecting her dual role of sex and war as well as the evening and morning aspects of the planet.

Sophia (wisdom) was believed to be the Mother of the minor Jehovah and Logos: She and her daughter, ZOE, had to put a brain into Jehovah and forced Him to form a Musical Worship Team to worship HER, Sophia and Zoe. In Proverbs Solomon who built all of those idolatrous buildings identified SOPHIA instead of the MALE LOGOS as being the VOICE or WORD of God which created all things. Zoe was called "the Beast and female instructing principle." Zoe is Eve.

The word "abomination" is also key to understanding the context. In Hebrew, the word "to 'evah," (abomination) is almost invariably linked to idolatry. In the passages from which both verses are taken, God tells Moses to tell the people not to follow the idolatrous practices of the people around them, people who sacrificed their children to Molech, or who masturbated into the fire to offer their semen to Molech, for example. Chapter 20 starts off with the same warning.

Remembering that Corrupting the Word as a SOPHIST is called "Selling learning at retail" and is therefore identified as PROSTITUTION. No ugly preachers or musicians need apply:
Classical resources we also rely upon: Johannes Quasten. In Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity"Philodemus considered it paradoxical that music should be regarded as veneration of the gods while musicians were paid for performing this so-called veneration. Again, Philodemus held as self deceptive the view that music mediated religious ecstasy. He saw the entire condition induced by the noise of cymbals and tambourines as a disturbance of the spirit.
He found it significant that, on the whole, only women and effeminate men fell into this folly.
Accordingly, nothing of value could be attributed to music; it was no more than a slave of the sensation of pleasure, which satisfied much in the same way that food and drink did.
AT THE TIME OF CHRIST THE MOTHER GODDESS WAS OFTEN CYBELE
These people are not just doing WILL-WORSHIP like the Scribes and Pharisees they are saying that the bad example of women, the examples authorized by Christ and explicit direct commands of Scripture is no longer THE TRUTH. A Church of Christ has no STAFF or organizational chart. A Church of Christ has Elders and Deacons: both words include the role of TEACHING as the only MINISTRY for which a group is called out of their REST.
The Command to PREACH is the command to READ or SPEAK that which is written for our learning. Therefore, it has no places on its organizational chart for adding FEMALE PREACHERS. In an already emasculated preacherhood and what they call "worship" it is logical that they will try to force everyone to go all the way as Paul wishes:

Conrad L'Heureux demonstrated that the marzeah, or symposium (feast, gathering, banquet, assembly) of El that is found in the Rephaim Texts of Ugarit "must be a reflex in the divine world of the symposium celebrated by the members of the earthly marzeah of El...each guild apparently had a divine patron."42 The heavenly marzeah had participants called rp'm, which we also find in the earthly marzeah, e.g., "May Krt be greatly exalted among the rp'm of the earth...the rp'm constitute an aristocracy of which the Canaanite kings were a part."43 Moses, and the prophets following him were proclaimed as "Speakers for Yahweh," showing the people that "they are sent from the divine king, the suzerain of treaties, to reprove and to pronounce judgment upon Israel..."44

Karen Armstrong in A History of God notes that the masculine (rational, spiritual whatever the gender) are WORD (Logos-logical) while the feminine (whatever the gender) are right-brained or emotion driven and will tend to gather to sing, play and dance (Note what saith the Law about Miriam). Her comments on Amos was the MALES were not able to face a Rational God and enter into masculine DIALOG.
The EVE story is beyond the grasp of the NEWLY-HIRED male or female staff. ONLY the Apostles and the Prophets by the Spirit OF Christ can speak for God;"God lay beyond 'gender' but, as in the Enuma Elish, each pair of emanations consisted of a male and female--a scheme which attempted to neutralize the masculine tenor of more conventional monotheism. Each pair of emanations grew weaker and more attenuated, since they were getting even further from their divine Source." (p. 95)
Speaking of the mystics, Armstrong showed how the new, gender-neutral gods are to be worshipped:
"This God is to be approached through the imagination and can be seen as a kind of art form, akin to the other great artistic symbols that have expressed the ineffable mystery, beauty and the value of life. Mystics have used music, dancing, poetry, fiction, stories, painting, sculpture and architecture to express this Reality which goes beyond concepts." (P. 396)
Not surprisingly, most Israelites declined the prophets invitation to enter into a dialog with Yahweh. They preferred a less demanding religion of cultic observance either in the Jerusalem Temple or in the old fertility cults of Canaan. This continues to be the case: the religion of compassion is followed only by a minority; most religious people are content with decorous worship in synagogue, church, temple and mosque. The ancient Canaanite religions were still flourishing in Israel... the Israelites were still taking part in fertility rites and sacred sex there, as we see in the oracles of the prophet Hosea, Amos contemporary. Miriam got the idea that as a prophetess of Hathor by virtue of being in the king's house that here musical "prophesying" was actually God speaking through her.

This PATTERN of the feminine and effeminate is that if they have a song they need to sing or play in tongues they BELIEVE that they are being led by God. In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul DENIED that and assumed the right to command and write.
We hear nothing more About Miriam but under David the prophesying (soothsaying) Levites performed the role of women.
The LAW Paul speaks of began with Eve and alsom Miriam.1Corinthians 10:6 Now these things were our examples, [Pattern]
to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

The vocal problem of bad women leads to an urge to publically perform. This was Paul's message about the Mad Women in Corinth who by virtue of serving as prophetesses of Apollo (Abaddon, Apollyon) insisted on "prophesying" or "speaking in tongues" in the assembly which was for EDUCATION ONLY. When Paul referred to Eve, Peter would warn that most professional WISE MEN would not understand.

Eve is mentioned only twice in the New Testament and because Jesus spoke in parables to HIDE the truth from the WISE (sophists=rhetoricians, singers, musicians, actors). Moses was writing an INVERTED version of Babylon Myths AFTER the nation fell from grace BECAUSE of instrumental idolatry at Mount Sinai. Therefore, those who mock Paul do not understand that Paul knew all about Eve and scholars know nothing. While not necessarily true, Paul understood that women especially looked to EVE (Zoe, Mary) as THEIR Mediatrix.The serpents, however, of the magicians-(that is,) the gods of destruction-withstood the power of Moses in Egypt, but the rod of Moses reduced them all to subjection and slew them. This universal serpent is, he says, the wise discourse of Eve. This, he says, is the mystery of Edem, this the river of Edem;this the mark that was set upon Cain,

This Eve, on account of her having been in the beginning deceived by the serpent, and become the author of sin, the wicked demon, who also is called Satan, who then spoke to her through the serpent, and who works even to this day in those men that are possessed by him, invokes as Eve.58 And he is called "demon" and "dragon," on account of his revolting from God. For at first he was an angel. And concerning his history there is a great deal to be said; wherefore I at present omit the relation of it, for I have also given an account of him in another place.
But also, concerning music, some have fabled that Apollo [Abaddon, Apollyon] was the inventor, and others say that Orpheus discovered the art of music from the sweet voices of the birds. Their story is shown to be empty and vain, for these inventors lived many years after the flood. The word "abomination" is also key to understanding the context. In Hebrew, the word "to 'evah," (abomination) is almost invariably linked to idolatry. In the passages from which both verses are taken, God tells Moses to tell the people not to follow the idolatrous practices of the people around them, people who sacrificed their children to Molech, or who masturbated into the fire to offer their semen to Molech, for example. Chapter 20 starts off with the same warning.
"To 'evah" also means "something which is ritually unclean."
Paul wants the men to lift up HOLY PALMS which would represent listening to the Word. If these males did not let the assembly be a Word Of God Only assembly they would let the vocal femals BRING ON WRATH or an ORGY.
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness,When a person is baptized into Christ they are promised the gift of A holy spirit (Acts 2:38) or A good conscience, consciousness or a co-perception of the LOGOS. In 2 Corinthians 3 Paul affirms that until one is converted (i.e. baptized) they will neither be able to READ the LOGOS or to HEAR it when it is READ in the synagogue or ekklesia. The transfer of the LOGOS is by PREACHING which is READING the Word for comfort and doctrine.

Gregory alludes to the story of Rhea who is the "Mother of the gods" or Eve. Paul understands the universal meaning of Eve and the Daughters of Eve."Singing served as a means of inducing ecstatic prophecy (speaking in tongues).
Thus the essential relationship between music and prophecy can be clearly seen.
This relationship also explains why the expression for "making music" and "prophesying" was often identical in the ancient tongues. origen contra celsum 8.67.
The Hebrew word Naba signifies not only "to prophesy" but also "to make music." (Quasten, Johannes, Music and Worship in Pagan and Christian Antiquity, p. 39)
