Isaiah 9 Isaiah 9 by Rubel Shelly: What the Zeal of the Lord Will Do (Isa.9-11). We will look at Isaiah 9 in contrast to the view that Scripture is not inspired. Rubel Shelly believes that Scripture is available as fragments from which we must build our own NARRATIVE. When Matthew recorded what Jesus is supposed to have literally spoken, Rubel sees this as the same "taking liberties" of inspired Scripture to tell his own VERSION. Rubel says that he also believes that Isaiah is speaking of a kingdom but his words agree with previous teachings that the kingdom HAS NOT COME. This is a quick study and we will correct and add at time permits. Sorry that I am late.Because there is only One Lord God, there can be none equal to Him. If there is any one equal to Him then He cannot be the One Lord God:
To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Isaiah 40:25
God became His own Intercessor because there was no man capable of interceding. Failure happened when truth failed and truth failed when the prophets and priests began consulting one another (undoubtedly at workshops) and making up their own songs and sermons thinking that their words were superior to God's Word:
Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey. And the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. Isaiah 5:15
The nature of God's intercession is based upon the failure of truth and the fact that there was no person to intercede by delivering the Words of God to the people. The offense was against God. Therefore, it must be God Himself being His own Rock, Lord, Arm or Intercessor to be the "door" or "interface" between Himself as the Spirit "interior" and to mankind as His "exterior."
In transgressing and lying against the Lord (Jehovah), and departing away from our God (Elohim), speaking oppression and revolt,
conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. Isaiah 59:13
And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm (power or seed) brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. Isaiah 59:16
For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. Isaiah 59:17
According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompense. Isaiah 59:18
So shall they fear the name of the
(1) Lord from the west,
(2) and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood,
(3) the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. Isaiah 59:19
And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. Isaiah 59:20There are MANY Elohim (Moses was one) but only Jehovah is our ONE True Elohim. He is both Lord and God as Thomas confessed Jesus the Christ in Whom dwelled full Deity. He is the ONE Intercessor qualified only because He is the ONE Redeemer. An earthly priest or preacher of musician CANNOT stand between us and God:
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Isaiah 59:21
This Intercessor would come in the name (singular) of Father, Son and Spirit. However, these are not names but works or offices. His one name would be Jehovah-Saved, Joshua or Jesus. For instance, when Jesus said that He had all authority and we could baptize in the name (singular) or the full authority of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Peter baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Therefore, what Peter actually did is a commentary upon Christ's command. After Christ sat down beside the glory He laid aside to become human, there is no longer Father, Son and Spirit. Jesus is:
Father
Jesus
Son
Spirit
Rubel Shelly: Perhaps Good King Hezekiah is in view here. He was the upright and faithful son of corrupt and disobedient King Ahaz.He came to the Davidic throne with a heart very different from his father's. He became Yahweh's agent for Jerusalem in the face of Assyrian power.
Justin Martyr addresses many of Rubel Shelly's false teachings in contending with Trypho. For instance, the Jews also claim that Psalm 110 spoke of Hezekiah.
Chapter XXXIII.-Ps. CX. Is Not Spoken of Hezekiah. He Proves that Christ Was First Humble, Then Shall Be Glorious.
"And," I continued, "I am not ignorant that you venture to expound this psalm as if it referred to king Hezekiah; but that you are mistaken, I shall prove to you from these very words forthwith. "The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, 'it is said; and, "Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek, 'with what follows and precedes.
Not even you will venture to object that Hezekiah was either a priest, or is the everlasting priest of God; but that this is spoken of our Jesus, these expressions show.
But your ears are shut up, and your hearts are made dull. For by this statement, "The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent: Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek, 'with an oath God has shown Him (on account of your unbelief) to be the High Priest after the order of Melchizedek; i.e., as Melchizedek was described by Moses as the priest of the Most High, and he was a priest of those who were in uncircumcision, and blessed the circumcised Abraham who brought him tithes, so God has shown that His everlasting Priest, called also by the Holy Spirit Lord, would be Priest of those in uncircumcision.
Those too in circumcision who approach Him, that is, believing Him and seeking blessings from Him, He will both receive and bless. And that He shall be first humble as a man, and then exalted, these words at the end of the Psalm show: "He shall drink of the brook in the way, 'and then, "Therefore shall He lift up the head.'
Ezekiel said that "God gave them a king in His anger and took them away in His anger." Hezekiah was the king and kings are God's agent to control the lawless. In Hezekiah's life the temple had become a den of thieves and was so polluted that not even animals could be sacrified in the COURTS.
Hezekiah was healed and given another 15 years: his response was that captivity would be acceptable as long as "it does not come in my lifetime." He responded by claiming to play instruments in the temple all of the time. Of course, no musical instrument could be brought into the real temple. The result was Manasseh and Hezekiah's flaunting his wealth by showing the enemy where it was stored. Isaiah condemned Hezekiah rater than seeing him as a PATTERN for MESSIAH.
Hezekiah was hoping to defend Jerusalem against certain capture by becoming ECUMENICAL. That is, he had to clean out the garbage from the temple left from idolatry so vile that God would not even accept animals being burned. Hezekiah needed to collect all of the LITTLE ALTARS or "congregations" into one national worship in order to keep everyone close to Jerusalem.
However, not in the most vile pagan temples could singers or musical instruments be brought into the holy precincts or "into the presence of the gods." That means that the Leviticial Warrior musicians under the KING and COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY could not enter into the TYPE of the church of Christ even to clean out the garbage.
While Hezekiah was at it he destroyed ALL of the "denominational churches" and their priesthood.
Rubel Shelly: So the language of hyperbole is used of his status -- Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, etc. It is hyperbole -- exaggeration for the sake of emphasis.
A human agent will perform God's will. His presence will not only give hope but relief. The child who is the rightful heir to the throne will become the man who honors Yahweh, fulfills the expectation of the people for justice and righteousness, and honors the royal office entrusted to him. He will be God's gift of grace to the people.
It is a fact that Jesus spoke in parables to HIDE the truth from the Jewish clergy who had no love for the Words of God "as they had been written." They were the Pharisees (preachers), Scribes (book writers) and Hypocrites (actors: performing preachers or musicians).
And it seems that Rubel has OVERSHOT and exaggerated fancifully through excitement or FOR EFFECT.
Hyperbole, an overshooting, excess, fr. Gr. ? to throw over or beyond; "ype`r over + ? to throw. See {Hyper-}, {Parable}, and cf. {Hyperbola}.] (Rhet.) A figure of speech in which the expression is an evident exaggeration of the meaning intended to be conveyed, or by which things are represented as much greater or less, better or worse, than they really are; a statement exaggerated fancifully, through excitement, or for effect.

Jesus ekballo-ed the musical minstrels who wanted to TEAM up with Him in a religious ritual for the "dead" girl. Jesus cast them out "more or less violently" as one CASTS OUT DUNG. This same term is used of Lucifer who was CAST OUT of heaven using a word which includes "play the flute, pollute or prostitute."
The nation, Jerusalem, the temple and the clergy were so polluted that God would not even accept sacrifices. By allowing FELLOWSHIP with paganism--the idolatrous musical kind--the temple was filled with garbage and the priests had set up altars throughout the country. Now, if you are going into the DEFENSIVE mode you need everyone to huddle around Jerusalem.
God took no initiative: as David had made a deal with God hundreds of years earlier, Hezekiah had a deal for God: they would clean up the temple and DESTROY all of those 'ecumenical buddy' churches.
Remember that Hezekiak planned to play the harp around the temple all of his life but he SPILLED THE BEANS when he gave the enemy a guided tour of his CHURCH PLANT. He also failed to train Manasseh who would musically burn babies. Click for Hezekiah's Reform to see that singers, musicians or preachers could not go into the type of the church of Christ or body of Christ EVEN to clean out the garbage.
The New Testament says that the Spirit of Christ was the same SPIRIT Who inspired the prophets. He was the source of WATER which Rubel Shelly calls a LEGEND. The same SPIRIT inspired the apostles to use this as prophetic of Jesus Christ as Isaiah 7 was prophetic of the Virgin Birth.
The Spirit of Christ informed the Old Testament Prophets
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Co.3:17
Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Peter 1:11
And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. 1 Peter 19:10
Isaiah 9:1 NEVERTHELESS the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.
Isaiah 9:2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
Rubel Shelly: Yet the apostles taught and the early church believed that this Isaiah text looked beyond Jerusalem, Hezekiah, and the people of eight centuries B.C. to the ultimate heir to David's throne who would be in fact and not merely in hyperbole "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" who would establish and uphold justice and righteousness forever.
They believed it ultimately foreshadowed the coming and coronation of King Jesus. So do I.
When Jesus comes and the fullness of the kingdom is realized,
we will know it was "the zeal of the Lord Almighty" which made it so. Not human achievement. Not national conquest. Not even the zeal of a Hezekiah -- who could only foreshadow the Christ -- or an apostle Peter -- who could only announce his presence.
But the zeal of the Lord Almighty would accomplish it as an act of grace to his people.
Peter said that it was the Spirit of Christ who inspired the prophets. Rubel Shelly would discount the "disunity by the apostles in the epistles." John agreed saying that this TESTIMONY is the Spirit of Christ.
This same Spirit fully indwelling Jesus Christ did not speak of a NOW BUT NOT YET kingdom. Rather, He spoke of a kingdom coming with power on the day of Pentecost or anytime Jesus was present. After Pentecost Jesus said of the ANOTHER Comforter "I will come to you" in John 14:16-18.
Therefore, wherever Christ the Spirit dwells the Kingdom is fully established. Jesus further said that this is not an EXTERNAL kingdom which can be built by a Community church movement. Whatever the Lion and Lamb prefigure dwell in peace in the individual hearts. The Old man of Sin is now at peace because he has been REGENERATED by God giving him A new, holy spirit. Remember that the COWS OF BASHAN were the WOMEN in Israel who wanted a religion out of NEW WINESKINS and MUSIC to silence the voice of God. The Book of Enoch as well as the Bible uses animals to speak of kinds of people.
Whatever Isaiah prophesied, God in Christ totally fulfilled. Those of the FIRST ADVENT also failed to understand that the Kingdom of God has no VISIBLE component to MARK its presence but the ekklesia or synagogue of Christ which assembles (synagogues) to "teach that which is written." It is a visible witness AGAINST the SIGN SEEKERS every time the Word is lifted up and read JUST the way the Spirit of Christ left it. Jesus forsaw the total fulfilment.
Rubel Shelly says that "Yet the apostles taught and the early church believed that this Isaiah text looked beyond Jerusalem."
This is the same Matthew who tells us about the temptation of Christ. The Israelites were given the 40 DAY SCHEME to test them. They failed by rising up to PLAY in musical idolatry. This was the CAUSE of the lose of the covenant of Grace and the burden of the law and a human PRIESTHOOD. Yet, Shelly etal can see the Old Testament as PROOF TEXT for approving instrumental music.
This is the same Matthew who RECORDS the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew and all of the apostles were hand picked and trained to take the WHOLE message of Jesus into the world. Rubel Shelly would have you believe that John belatedly decided to write his gospel account from old fragments and probably a poor memory.
But the same Matthew records Jesus as ACTUALLY saying that Isaiah prophesied of Messiah. How could he not if Isaiah prophesied by the Spirit of Christ.
Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; Matt 4:12
And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: Matt 4:13
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Matt 4:14
The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: Matt 4:15
The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. Matt 4:16
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matt 4:17
If the kingdom was not at hand and if it was not going to come with power in Jerusalem during the life of the Apostles then Jesus--in the hands of Matthew--actually lied. Isaiah 6 and 29 speaks of the clergy as blind and deaf and Isaiah 48 shows that the Sprit of Christ spoke in parables to hide the mysteries of the kingdom from the people who would 'water the wine' and retail the free water of the Word. Jesus is the ONLY source of light and if the epistles are divided writings of divided writers ten Paul also lied. But, Paul used his totally sacrificial live devoid of any comfort or glory as the MARK that he spoke for God in Christ. When Christ returns everyone will bow before the king but His coming will mark the END of His reign and he will never be the KING of secular kingdoms.

David was a carnal man and a secular king. The king, kingdom and temple-state was the result of the elders FIRING God and insisting on a King like the nations. God knew that to mean "so that we can worship like the nations." Jesus was the Spiritual king and this SAME MATTHEW says that this is MIGHTY JEHOVAH embodied in a little child who could tame the ASP and defeat the secular LIONS:
Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Isa 22:22 And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
Isaiah prophesied of the composite nature of the One God:
For unto us a child (seed) is born,
unto us a son is given:Now, that is not two "people"-
Isaiah 9:6 and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God (El), The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

There was no failure of religious ritual or ceremony; of gifts and sacrifices. Rather, the first cause of the problem was the failure to teach God's truth. Therefore, to be consistent with the prophecy, the Intercessor and Redeemer must come as the Word of God. Therefore, the Arm of God or the power required to make spiritual changes is contained within His incarnated seed. And the Redeemer (to buy us back) shall come to Zion, and

The old failure was priests and prophets ignoring God's words and speaking their self-composed songs and sermons. Therefore, the New Covenant demands that those who have the Seed, Word or Arm of God as His power, continue tospeak that seed or word or the covenant is broken. To throw away the Seed is to throw away Jesus. Jesus even went so far as to equate His Words (seed) to both Spirit and Life (John 6:63):
As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord;
My spirit------that is------------------upon----thee, and
my words----which I have put ---in ------.-thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seeds seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Isaiah 59:21
When the words of Christ depart out of the preachers, singers or book writers the Spirit of God has been cast down and God is made into a liar.
Earlier, Isaiah showed that the Spirit would not be a "person" but the Spirit of or mental dispositions all related to the Words of God. There is not a single prophecy of "spirit" as a person who superceded the Word and who puts into us hand-clapping, singing, dancing, drama or out-of-control body movements. Now, listen carefully to Isaiah who prophesied of the seven-fold spirit of God as Messiah.
AND there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isaiah 11:1
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
(Which is) the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Isaiah 11:2And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: Isaiah 11:3
When God or pure Spirit rules in the physical world He is the Lord. This intercession between the Spirit and physical world is done with His Word, breath (spirit) or arm. We can see from the following illustration that man cannot bridge the great gulf between the Spirit world and the "earth" world. Therefore, God "reaches through" with His Arm and connects us to Him through His Arm in the person of Lord, Jesus Christ.

The SEVEN SPIRITS which would rest upon the Branch in Isaiah 11 were all related to forms of DIVINE KNOWLEDGE. Christ the ONE Teacher proves that the King is reigning and the kingdom is working when the LIONS of Dionysus and the LAMBS of Orpheus could abandon their PREFERENCES about meats and drinks and INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC to force the "gods" to descend or the "worshipers" to ascend up to the godhead. Then, in Romans 15 the kingdom could bring peace if the glorified God with ONE MIND and ONE VOICE by speaking "that which is written." Both the Lambs (vegetarians) and Lions (meat eaters) could REST together and "come learn of me."
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Hab.2:14
All religions as opposed to the Synagogue of Christ believed that MADNESS was proof that the gods were PARTNERNING with them to reveal NEW KNOWLEDGE. Music was used to induce madness proven by the "spiritual" feelings trafficked as being "worship." As David believed that God dwelled in the Ark of the Covenant and could be transported to his NEW tent in the Jebusite High Place, he tried to awaken his HARP so he could awaken the DAWN. All pagans believed that the gods spoke through music and the musical sounds were from the gods.

Zechariah said of the Branch:
It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and
he will be clothed with majesty and1. will sit and rule on his throne. And he
2. will be a priest on his throne. And
3. there will be harmony between the two.' Zechariah 6:13If Jesus is not on His throne now then He is NOT a priest on His throne. If we have to await a visible kingdom so that Jesus will sit on a literal throne then we utterly deny that the Death of Christ who (is recorded) took His blood into the heavenly sancturary is NOW able to MAKE INTERCESSION for us. That may be why Shelly teaches that music can "help lead the worshipers into the presence of God."
Jesus is the name in which the Holy Spirit comes. He is the ONE Comforter and Counselor and Rubel Shelly is not:
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16 (Not different but another: more of the same kind, fuller)
Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,
because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him;for he dwelleth with you,
and shall be in you. John 14:17I will not leave you comfortless:
I will come to you. John 14:18If this history is just an application of the prophecy rather than the fulfillment then there is no prophecy and you have lost the PRIMARY method of proving that God is God and the mercinaries are not.
If all of this prophecy and the claims of Jesus is just the "application" by the Bible writers long after memories began to fade, they what is there in the Bible which gives them the right to claim that THEY are going to partner with God to get the REAL truth?
When God sends HIMSELF it is as the Christ or Spirit Anointed. He sends Himself as the WORD. As Thought God plans, as Word He executes, Spirit is what exists between the Beginning and End, the Alpha and Omega: God sent forth His WORDS as great LAMPS and this light is SPIRIT in the words of God in Christ: "My Lord and My God."
Isaiah 9:8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.
