Eusebio Tanicala: Question on Amos 5:23

I plead with fellow preachers and church leaders to STOP using Amos 5 and Amos 6. This reveals ignorance of a weak and foolish argument against instrumental music .

Part One 13 Steps to understand the the use of Instruments

Part Two: Insisting that God COMMANDED the use of instrumental Music under the Law

Answering The Church of Christ uses this false information as one BOOK END proving God commanded instrumental worship and Revelation as the other Book End.  Unfortunately with most of the new ANTIs, he quotes Revelation 18:22 as his proof but In verse 23 John calls them SORCERERS.

Eusebio Tanicala: To my brethren and especially members of the PBC alumni association, please open your Bible to Amos 5:23.
Please open your eyes and your mind.
What is the first part of v. 23? It says, “
Take away from Me the noise of your songs.”
If v. 23 prohibits the use of stringed instruments,
should not singing also be prohibited?
Both Amos and the Classics repudiate singing AND playing an instrument at the same time: that would be for the women and effeminate in most societies.
Eusebio Tanicala:  But why do you sing in your worship time? Why do you sing in your birthday celebrations? Why do you sing during funeral services? Why apply prohibition on the second part of the verse but not in the first part of the verse.
If you missed Acts 7 you will probably believe that God approved instrumental noise which was always the mark of the worship of the starry host (even in the Temple) and the loss of the Word of God as a terminal sin for which "a bad attitude" could not be repented of:
Acts 7:38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel
which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers:
who received the lively oracles to give unto us:  The Book of The Covenant.
Acts 7:39 To whom our fathers would not obey,
but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
Acts 7:40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us:
for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
Acts 7:41 And they made a calf in those days,
and offered sacrifice unto the idol,
and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. [musical idolatry]
Acts 7:42 Then God turned,
and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; [The Book of The Law]
as it is written in the book of the prophets,
O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices
by the space of forty years in the wilderness? [not commanded]
Acts 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch,
and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them:
and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
Because the National Monarchy had been abandoned to worship the starry host: Amos speaks of worshiping the starry host rather than the Creator of the hosts of heaven.  On the other hand, the synagogue or church in the wilderness was for rest FROM pagan Sabbath worship (always SUN god worship) to Read the Word and Rehearse it: the Church is a School of the Word of God so we need no authority NOT to make noise when the Word of God is being taught.

It is during BIBLE CLASS TIME that Christ outlawed instrumental noise for those with no sense of reverence who need to be reatrained for the legalistic loop-hole seekers called the "doctors of the law."

Indeed, those who know the context of Amos and consistency as well as simple logic would only laugh at Churches of Christ preachers who use Amos 5:6 in arguing against the use of instruments of music.

On the contrary, because the instrumental noise was a MARK of the worship of their astrial deities and well documented from Egyptian, Canaanite, Babylonian and Greek documents; as well as defined as soothsaying or sorcery used to fleece the poor, you will find no historical scholar of note--or the rest of the Bible--which does not utterly condemn instrumental noise when you gather people ONLY for instructions. Any reader of the prophets where Christ tells the PROPHETIC side will hear instruments as the cause as well as the mark of depriving people of the free bread and wagter of the Word.

Eusebio Tanicala: I plead with fellow preachers and church leaders to STOP using Amos 5 and Amos 6
as proofs against the use of instruments of music in worship.
Using them as proofs against instrument of music in worship
would only reveal ignorance and would help perpetuate wresting of scriptures.
Further, a foolish and weak argument against a practice removes the sting of one’s advocacy. ( Eusebio Tanicala, Ph.D.)
If you can disable the Old Testament, and then force the New Testament to be Silent then you have won the battle for others who have used this "boil the frogs" to make room for future use of instruments.  It is the FAILURE of those who consider themselves faithful to know and understand the story line of the musical fall from grace which DISABLES them from the an Old Testament overflowing with connecting musical instruments to Lucifer as the source, soothsayers or sorcerers picking your pockets, warriors threatening sexual molestation to the defeated, sacrificial noise makers from which we get the word PARASITE, prostitutes and Sodomites who prowled all pagan sacrificial centers of which Jerusalem was one the Bible calls SODOM and the mother of harlots.
Eusebio Tanicala:  How then should we interpret Amos 5:21-25 and Amos 6:4-6? Are the items enumerated prohibited? How do we interpret “You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and you fancy yourselves to be great musicians, as King David was”? (NLB)

Second, we should be consistent. Look at the context. If the portion, “I will not hear the melody of thy viols” (5:23). were a prohibition on the use of instruments of music at the time of Amos, then to be contextually consistent, all others in the context disliked by Yahweh, like feast days, solemn assemblies, burnt offerings, meat offerings, peace offerings, drinking with the use of bowls, eating fatted cows, lying on soft beds, ..
AS FAR AS I CAN DETERMINE THAT MAKES ALL RECORDED COMMENTATORS IGNORANT FOOLS.

"we recognize the same elements: the sacrifices and libation, the cultic feast in which the congregation gets a share of food and drink after it has been blessed by the king, and the merry-making, now in the form of instrumental and vocal music. But the central act of the ritual, which was performed by the king, is called literally 'drinking' the god (Gurney, O. R. Some Aspects of Hittite Religion, p. 33-34, Oxford University Press, 1977)

"Sacrifices, rituals, festivals honoring Yahweh abounded, but these rites were tangible evidence of lack of knowledge, for they expressed the popular belief that Yahweh could be pleased and pacified by cultic ceremonies.

"The condemnation of cultic rites introduced in 4:4 f. and 5:4 f. is picked up again with new vehemence. It has been argued that Amos was not opposed to cultic ritual per se but condemned the mind set of the people by which responsibility to Yahweh was performed perfunctorily and without relationship to daily life and society.
"If we take Amos' words as they stand, there seems to be little doubt that he condemned the entire religious pattern--feasts, sacrifices, ritual music, offerings, tithes--everything. Gerald LaRue, History of the O.T
"NO command of God was ever so ascribed to man. The use of the instruments of music in the Old Testament were of man, not of God." (Tract on music, Lipscomb).

"Doubtless they sounded harmoniously in their own ears; but it reached no further. Their melody, like much Church-music, was for itself, and ended in itself. 'Let Christian chanters learn hence, not to set the whole devotion of Psalmody in a good voice, subtelty of modulation and rapid intonation, quavering like birds, to tickle the ears of the curious, take them off to themselves and away from prayer, lest they hear from God." (Barnes, Albert, Amos, p. 300)

"Surely these inspired statements are sufficient to show that David made, invented, and commanded the use of instruments of music in divine worship. Where does revelation explain that God made, invented, appointed, or commanded the use of instrumental music in ordained worship of that age? On the basis of plain declarations, the contention that David introduced the idea is founded; in the absence of such testimony that God is the author, we reject the opinion that God authorized the practice." (L.O. Sanderson, p. 350).

"From the beginning, then, it was not so. Neither is it a part of or aid to Christian worship. Since there is no record of God ordaining the practice, he must have simply tolerated or indulged it, just as he did regarding some ignorance, kings, divorces, and polygamy" (Sanderson, p. 351).

"It was by the hand or commandment of the Lord and his prophets that the Levites should praise the Lord; for so the Hebrew text may be understood:

"and it was by the order of David that so many instruments of music should be introduced into the Divine service." (Adam Clark, Commentary on 2 Chron. 29:25).

Then Clark says:

"But were it evident, which it is not, either from this (2 Chron. 29:25) or any other place in the sacred writings, that instruments of music were prescribed by Divine authority under the law, could this be adduced with any semblance of reason that they ought to be used in Christian Worship? No..." (Adam Clark, Commentary, Vol. II, PP. 690-691).

"I believe that David was not authorized by the Lord to introduce that multitude of musical instruments into the divine worship of which we read; and I am satisfied that his conduct in this respect is most solemnly reprehended by this prophet; and I further believe that the use of such instruments of music in the Christian church is without the sanction and against the will of God; that they are subversive of the spirit of true devotion...if there was a woe to them who invented instruments of music, as did David under the law, is there no woe...to those who introduce them?" (Adam Clark, Commenting on Amos 6:5).

"It is foreign also to the piety of Clement that the (song) instituted for drinking companies, to be sung in the convivial feasts of the Gentiles... As if he [Clement] did not know that Psalms, not 'wine songs,'... were recited at the close of the Supper... I say that so great a profanation of the Psalms is most severely condemned by God in the third [commandment] of the Decalogue and Amos 5:23; 6:5" (Joseph Bingham, Antiq. of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 485 quoting Clement).

"...Scriptures do condemn the use that David made of the instruments in worship--Amos 6:5: 'Woe to them... that chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David;' and Amos 5:23: 'Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.' The condemnation of the instruments of music in this passage turns on the phrase like David--it does not say like David's, which could refer only to the instruments, but like David is the use that David made of the instruments. David did not invent the musical instrument--Jubal invented the instruments (Gen. 4:21)--but David invented them for worship--they were David's innovation." (Wallace, p. 177).

"Amos, we are told, is the sharpest critic of musical instruments in pre-Christian times. through him God expresses a preference for justice and honesty over bloody sacrifice and its attendant music of song and instruments. This sentiment, we are told, was revolutionary, making part of a similar change felt over the civilized world... And overall view of the evidence, McKinnon thinks, reveals a relationship between the three elements: a higher conception of God, a rejection of sacrifice, and a rejection of musical instruments." (Green, William M, Pepperdine College, in Restoration Quarterly, v. 19, 1966).

"To hear a man's or woman's voice sing Handel's solo... beats through one's chest with some sort of a throb depending on how well he or she is singing, and how much you respond to this kind of music. But no matter how much you may 'enjoy' Handel's solo, the words are not meant to be entertainment." (Schaeffer, Edith, Christianity is Jewish, p. 1)

"Amos stressed "that violations of the moral law could not be remedied by means of festive rites, offerings, or liturgical indulgence on the part of the sinner. In point of fact, God was already standing beside the altar (Am. 9:1ff), poised and ready to shatter it. No ritual, however, elaborate and symbolic in nature, could possibly substitute for the sincere worship of the human spirit, grounded in high moral and ethical principles." (Harrison, p. 895).

"Not surprisingly, most Israelites declined the prophet's invitation to enter into a dialog with Yahweh. They preferred a less demanding religion of cultic observance either in the Jerusalem Temple or in the old fertility cults of Canaan. This continues to be the case: the religion of compassion is followed only by a minority; most religious people are content with decorous worship in synagogue, church, temple and mosque. The ancient Canaanite religions were still flourishing in Israel... the Israelites were still taking part in fertility rites and sacred sex there, as we see in the oracles of the prophet Hosea, Amos' contemporary." (Armstrong, Karen, A History of God, p. 47).

F. B. Bruce is one of the best known modern writer and one might expect that he would defend the denominational practice. However, he like most who rest on their scholarship tell the truth. He wrote--

"The Holy Spirit, uttering His voice by Amos, pronounces the rich to be wretched on account of their luxury: 'Those that drink strained wine, and recline on an ivory couch,' he says; and what else similar he adds by way of reproach. Especial regard is to be paid to decency (as the myth represents Athene, whoever she was, out of regard to it,

giving up the pleasure of the flute because of the unseemliness of the sight). (Clement of Alexandria, p. 245).

"...these same people were punctilious in their religious observances. Never did such abundant sacrifices smoke to Yahweh from the altars at Dan and Bethel and other sanctuaries in Israel; and the note of praise rose regularly and loudly from tongue and harp. Was not this the worship in which Yahweh delighted? So they thought, but the voice of Yahweh through His prophet told a different story." (F.F. Bruce, Israel, p. 58).

Bruce shows, along with the LXX, that (1) music was used as worship, (2) they thought that God would delight in it, but (3) God condemned it. This refutes those who deny that Amos said anything about music and it supports the clear statement and context of the book of Amos.

Most ancient scholars not only condemn music as worship but show that it had its origin in pagan superstition and was the product of the poets (songs as magical incantations)--

"It was only permitted to the Jews as sacrifice was, for the heaviness and grossness of their souls. God condescended to their weakness, because they were lately drawn off from idols; but now, instead of organs, we may use our own bodies to praise him withal." (Chrysostom on Psa. 149, Vol. iii, p. 634).

"I say that so great a profanation of the Psalms is most severely condemned by God in the third [commandment] of the Decalogue and Amos 5:23; 6:5, 5" (Joseph Bingham, Antiq. of the Christian Church, Vol. 2, p. 485 quoting Clement)

"This passage (Amos 5:23-24) shows us that Amos was opposed

to the forms in which people acted out their worship of God,
and other passages strengthen this impression.
Turning back to the Mosaic period, Amos asks the rhetorical question: 'Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?" (5:25). He is merciless in his attack on the shrines, especially the royal shrine of Jeroboam II at Bethel (3:14; 7:7-9, 10-17; 9:1). It is very doubtful, however, that he intended a wholesale abolition of the system of worship. Rather, Amos was probably demanding that the cult be purified, for it had become so contaminated by pagan thought and practice that the people had become indifferent to the true worship of Yahweh and the demand of his torah... He demanded that everything be swept away that did not conform to the proper worship of Yahweh." (Anderson, Bernard, Understanding OT, p. 277).

"The prophets were singularly unimpressed by all this religious busyness. They asserted that the people had abandoned the true God for heathen idolatries and that their much-frequented sanctuaries were sinks of iniquity. Recent archaeological discoveries go a long way towards confirming their condemnation of popular religion. It is significant, for example, that on the ostraca from eighth-century Samaria, the proportion of names compounded with Baal suggests that no less than a third of the population practiced some form of Canaanite religion." (Heaton, E. W., Everyday Life in the Old Testament, Scribners), p. 231).
You have lifted up the shrine of your king, the pedestal of your idols, the star of your god -- which you made for yourselves. -- Amos 5:26

Yea, ye took the
tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Raephan, the image of them which ye made for yourselves." Amos 5:26 LXX
"The neighboring gods of Phoenicia, Canaan, Moab--Baal, Melkart, Astarte, Chemosh, Moloch, etc--were particularly attractive to Jerusalem, while the old Sem calf-worship seriously affected the state religion of the Northern Kingdom...the worship of the sun, moon, stars and signs of the Zodiac became so intensely fascinating that these were introduced even into the temple itself (2 Ki. 17:16; 21:3-7; 23:4, 12; Jer. 19:13; Ezek. 8:16; Amos 5:26)" (Int Std Bible Ency., Idolatry, p. 1448).

THE TWO THREADS RUNNING THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE HEBREW PEOPLE

When Israel rose up in musical idolatry at Mount Sinai the SPIRIT'S side said that God turned them over to worship the starry host.

The Scribes testimony is used for the PROOF that God actually commanded what He abandoned them to do.
Only the Prophets and Apostles are Christ's witnesses for the SPIRITUAL thread:
Luke 11:49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God,
I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
Luke 11:50 That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world,
        may be required of this generation;
Luke 11:51 From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias,
which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation
Peter's command was that we teach the "prophecies made more certain" as the prophecies by the Spirit of Christ were fully preached by Jesus as the Christ in person.  Peter further said that we cannot private interprete or further expound those.

Jesus defined the Scribes and Pharisees as hypocrites by naming speakers, singers and instrument players.  Therefore, there is nothing those defined as hypocrites performed which and be used as God's purposed will.

You may read the whole lecture on the Word Ministry site which apparently speaks for the Church of Christ in the Philipines.

The SOUNDS made of trumpets or harps are never called MUSIC.  Furthermore, they were outlawed inside any holy place including the Synagogue or Church of Christ in the wilderness.   Modern singing of non-Biblical text and with complex harmony produces the same SOUNDS intended to make the lambs dumb before the slaughter.  In Amos it helped the clergy fleece the poor to engage in those ACTS deemed PROPER if one had the right attitude

This village, which was included in Israel after the kingdom was divided. All traces of this idolatry were later removed by Josiah, king of Judah. It has been identified with the ruins of Beitin, a small village 9 miles south of Shiloh. The Gilgal that Amos mentions was another village that practiced a form of worship that Amos found idolatrous located not far from Bethel. The kingdom of the ten tribes of Israel stretched from Beersheba to Mount Ephraim (2 Chr. 19:4), and the former city was presumably also the scene of immoderate revelries and their ilk. Amos' reference to the poor ("Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor" v 11) brings up one of the more progressive aspects of the Old Testament, which is a concern about the plight the poor, weak, and oppressed, something also echoed in the Koran and the New Testament. Poor people were the beneficiaries of specific laws and customs, and had certain privileges, such as the right to glean the fields (Lev. 19:9, 10; Deut. 24:19,21); a share of the produce of the fields and the vineyards in the sabbatical year (Ex. 23:11; Lev. 25:6); and to portions from the tithes (Deut. 14:28, 29; 26:12, 13). Lines 12 and 13 sound like a description of modern America: "12 For I kn Essays
High Places They were hated by prophets as being part of the fertility religion of the Canaanites and incompatible with Yahwism (Hos. 2: 2–20 and Ezek. 16: 16), but attracted much popular support. Indeed many local shrines claimed to have been founded by unimpeachably authentic Israelite heroes— Jacob at Bethel (Gen. 28: 18–22) and Joshua at Gilgal (Josh. 4: 20–4)—which was a means of making originally Canaanite shrines respectable for faithful Israelites.
(3) Chamman ("sun-image"): chamman, the King James Version "images," "idols"; the Revised Version (British and American) "sun-images" (Leviticus 26:30; 2 Chronicles 14:5; 34:4,7; Isaiah 17:8; 27:9; Ezekiel 6:4,6):

Apollo (Abaddon, Apollyon) This worship may originally have come from Babylonia, but the reverence of the sun under the name Baal-hamman had long been common in Palestine before Joshua and the Israelites entered the country. These sun-images were probably obelisks or pillars connected with the worship of some local Baal. The chariot and horses of the sun, mentioned (2 Kings 23:11) as having an honored place at the western entrance of the Jerusalem Temple, represented not a local but a foreign cult. In Babylonian temples, sacrifices were made to the sun-chariot, which seems to have had a special significance in time of war (Pinches, HDB, IV, 629; see also CHARIOTS OF THE SUN).

2 Kings 23:5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

Amos 5:6 Seek the LORD, and ye shall live;

Seeking the Lord is the only meaning of worship in the spirit.  Seeking God through His Word is Paul's only worship word.

Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him:

Amos 5:7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood,

H3939 la‛ănâh lah-an-aw' From an unused root supposed to mean to curse; wormwood (regarded as poisonous, and therefore accursed):—hemlock, wormwood.
Please notice that if they PRACTICED righteousness this would not make turning judgment to wormwood right.  Neither can this be used if they GRIEVED for their people it would be acceptable to worship in their temple with music.

Stephen in Acts 7 proves that it was because of the musical worship of the Egyptian trinity at Mount Sinai that God turned them over to worship the starry hosts.  God conditionally conditionally sentenced them to return to Babylon.  Therefore, the ACT of worship is to seek the MAKER of the seven stars and Orion and NOT the planets themselves.

SEE THE MUSICAL FALL FROM GRACE
Rom. 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful;
but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Rom. 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom. 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man,
and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Rom. 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts,
to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom. 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie,
and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator,
who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Neh 9:6 Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
PROOF THAT THEY WERE WORSHIPING THE STARRY HOST AS AT MOUNT SINAI

As proof that they were worshiping the starry host which was Sabazianism or their old Dionysus rituals in Egypt, Amos commands that:

Amos 5:8 Seek him that MAKETH the seven stars and Orion,
and turneth the shadow of death into the morning,
and maketh the day dark with night:
that calleth for the waters of the sea,
and poureth them out upon the face of the earth:
        The LORD is his name:
Amos 5:9 That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong,
so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

Whatever the Israelites called their "god" they did not worship the Jehovah of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
In the cuneiform writing the Jews were named laudi.— Schrader, Keilinschr. n. d. Alt. Test. 188. Audah, in Hebrew, means ' I will praise.' This reveals the original name of Ju- dea, the laud of And. If we follow St. Jerome's dictum " to write a ' he' but to read it an «," we will find that Isaiah, xix. 17, has " laiidah's laud " instead of Jeudah's land. By a Hebrew pun, Genesis, xxix. 35, gives us ' Audah' as the root of the name laudah. Ami's altar was sprinkled with blood. Saturn's name was Chion, the Living One. Saturn's altars were blood-besprinkled. The horns of lachoh's (lao's) altars were blood-besprinkled on Saturn's day. The right ears of Aharon and his sons, their right thumbs, their right great toes, and their garments were sprinkled with blood.—Exodus, xxix. 12, 116, 20, 21. For the life of the flesh is in the blood.—Leviticus, xvii. G, 11. Chion was the Achiah asur Achiah, of Exodus, iii. 14, the Living God of Time, Set or Saturn. Compare Daniel, vii. 13. For Chion (like Moloch) was the name of the Living One!
God's Command
Lev. 20:2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech; he shall surely be put to death: the people of the land shall stone him with stones.
While claiming to worship Jehovah they worshipped their STAR GODS.
  1. Ezek. 20:39 As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord GOD; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.
  2. 1Kings 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
  3. 2Kings 17:33 They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
Samuel sent Saul to GILGAL which is where the people made many altars to sin: it was not designated for normal sacrifices.

1 Sam 10:10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

1 Sam 10:11 And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

Re 1 Sam. 10:10 "These prophets were groups of men who devoted themselves to ecstatic devotions. They would play instrument, sing, dance and put themselves into wild trances, and fall down in a frenzy. They rather resembled certain orders of dervishes of later Islamic times, and if the word were here given as 'dervishes' rather than 'prophets,' the picture would be clearer.

"In their trances and ecstasies, these prophets or dervishes were believed to be divinely possessed, to have access to more than human knowledge, to be able to pronounce oracles, and so on."

"In the time of Saul, the companies of prophets were by no means completely edifying. They may, indeed, have been hang-overs of paganism. Samuel, as the spiritual leader of the time, seems to have attempted to guide their energies into the path of Yahvism, but it is difficult to say how much success he might have head."

"Yet the prophets were an excellent tool. They had the capacity to stir and influence the people and they tended to be strongly nationalistic, ready always to serve as the backbone of resistance against foreign oppression. Samuel, as their head, could direct them to meet and join Saul. It was the support of the bands of prophets that was Samuel's practical contribution to the establishment of Sauls kingship." (Asimov's Guide to the Bible, p. 283).

"Self-interest in social affairs made for self-indulgence in matters of religion. The northern sanctuaries were crowded with worshippers who, in the main, were rejoicing in the erotic religious rites that were the concomitant of a pagan Canaanite Baal worship.

Prophets and priests associated with the sanctuaries profited from the lavish gifts of the worshippers, and naturally condoned these exercises in the name of religion, appearing completely oblivious to the conditions of rapid decay which lay immediately underneith the surface of social life." (Harrison, R. K., Introduction to the Old Testament, Eerdmans, p. 886)

1 Sam 10:18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

1 Sam 10:19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations;

and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us.
Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.

This is what they are doing in Amos where the instruments were used for a burnt offering of a child or a goat.

Amos 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images,
the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Acts 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the STAR of your god Remphan,
figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Under "Star Worship" the Jewish Encyclopedia states:

"Star Worship" is perhaps the oldest form of idolatry practiced by the ancients. The observation of the stars in the East very early led the people to regard the planets and the fixed stars as gods. The religion of the ancient Egyptians is known to have consisted preeminently of Sun-worship. Moses sternly warned the Israelites against worshipping the Sun, Moon, stars, and all the hosts of heaven (Deuteronomy 4:19; 17:3). The Israelites fell into this kind of idolatry and as early as the time of Amos they had the images of Siccuth and Chium, 'the stars of their god' (Amos 5:26); the latter name is generally supposed to denote the planet Saturn. That the Kingdom of Israel fell earlier than that of Judah is stated (II Kings 17:16) to have been due, among other causes, to its worshipping the host of heaven.

But the Kingdom of Judah in its later period seems to have outdone the Northern Kingdom [Israel] in star-worship." Of Manasseh it is related that he built altars to all the hosts of heaven in the two courts of the house of YHWY, and it seems it was the practice of even Kings before him to appoint priests who offered sacrifices to the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and all the hosts of heaven. Altars for star-worship were built on the roofs of the houses, and horses and chariots were dedicated to the worship of the Sun. (II Kings 21:5; 23:4-5, 11-12) Star-worship continued in Judah until the 18th year of Josiah's reign (621 B.C.) when the King took measures to abolish all kinds of idolatry. But although star-worship was then abolished as a public cult, it was practiced privately by individuals who worshipped the heavenly bodies, and poured out libations to them on the roofs of their houses (Zephaniah 1:5; Jeremiah 8:2; 19:13)  Jeremiah, who prophesied in the sixth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin (591 B.C.) describes the worship of the Sun as practiced in the court of the Temple (Ezekiel 8:16) and that even after the destruction of the Temple the women insisted on continuing to worship the Queen of Heaven.

"The ancient Hebrews, being nomads like the Arabs, favored the Moon, while the Babylonians, who were an agricultural nation, preferred the Sun. But, as appears from Ezekiel 20:7-8 the Moon-worship of the Israelites, even while they were still in Egypt was combined with Sun-worship."

Coffman Notes: WICKED ISRAEL'S PREFERENCE FOR PAGAN SHRINES

"Despite the fact of God's having set up his holy altar at a specific location and having given the most solemn prohibitions against worshipping or sacrificing elsewhere, and in spite of God's having forbidden the Jews to honor or retain any of the pagan shrines and altars in Palestine, they nevertheless spared all the pagan shrines, and installed others.

"Note the fourfold repetition of the word "there" in Ezek. 20:28. It was especially an affront to the God of Israel that his people would patronize and even prefer to worship at such high places, rather than at God's true altar. Of course, it was the licentious worship of the pagans which they at once adopted and included along with God's worship that was the great attraction for Israel. Blasphemy against God? Of course; it was blasphemy of the worst kind, because it connected the holy name of the Lord Jehovah with all the immorality and debaucheries of paganism.

Amos 5:10 They hate him that rebuketh in the gate,
and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Amos 5:11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor,
and ye take from him burdens of wheat:

ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them;
ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

Amos 5:12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins:
        they afflict the just,
        they take a bribe,
and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

Amos 5:13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

Amos 5:14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live:
and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

Amos 5:15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate:
it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Vocal or instrumental rejoicing was outlawed for the Church of Christ in the wilderness.

See Second Samuel Six.

All singing, playing and dancing including David's naked dance was "performing the roles of women."  Clergy must be male but the performance had to be effeminate: the Jews sang a falsetto and the clothing was derived from female garments.  For instance, the epod David wore and danced naked:

Plutarch asks why, on the lanuary Ides, flute-players are permitted to go about the city, wearing women's dresses. Probably because the Mysteries of Herakles were then celebrated. Among the Hindus abstinence from women was in many cases required, as on the day of the Newmoon and Fullmoou, and on the 8th and 14th days of the month.

"Women and girls from the different ranks of society were proud to enter the service of the gods as singers and musicians. The understanding of this service was universal: these singers constituted the 'harem of the gods'." (Quasten)

"The name of psaltery entered Christian literature in the 3rd century B.C. translation of the Old Testament called the Septuagint where, in the Psalms, nebel was translated psalterion. Thus, Nebuchadnezzar's idolatrous ensemble included the Aramic psantria. Notice, also, that the book of Psalms has also become known as the Psalter (or psalterium), from the hymns sung with this harp. Source

Clark Nehemiah 9 Verse 25 Became fat, and delighted themselves] They became effeminate, fell under the power of luxury, got totally corrupted in their manners, sinned against all the mercies of God, and then were destroyed by his judgments. We have an old nervous saying, "War begets poverty, poverty begets peace, peace begets affluence, affluence begets luxury and corruption of manners; and hence civil broils, foreign wars, and desolations." A sensible Roman historian has said the same: "Imperium facile iis artibus retinetur, quibus initio partum est: verum ubi pro labourE, DESIDIA; pro continentia et aequitate, LIBIDO atque SUPERBIA invasere: fortuna simul cum moribus IMMUTATUR."

"The trained musicians which eventually appear around the time of David and Solomon mark a distinctive change in the history of Jewish music. Before this time much of the music was made by women." (Zondervan Pict., Music p. 313). "Before the establishment of the kingdom under Saul, it was the women who, as in every young civilization, played a major part in the performance of music. Such figures as Miriam, Deborah, Jephtha's daughter, and the women hailing the young hero David have become almost archetypes of female musicians. Characteristic of all these cases is the familiar picture of a female chorus, dancing and singing, accompanied by frenzied drum-beating. This is the scene known to the entire Near East, and not even the severe rule of Islam could wholly suppress this age-old practice." (Int Dict of the Bible, Music, p. 457).

The king of Tyre where both Molech was worshipped and homosexual worship filtered into the Temple in Jerusalem is the personification of Lucifer or Venus one of STARS worshipped in Israel and Judah:

Is. 23:15 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years,
according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years
shall Tyre sing as an harlot.
Is. 23:16 Take an harp, go about the city,
        thou harlot that hast been forgotten;
make sweet melody, sing many songs,
        that thou mayest be remembered.

The RESULTS of wine, women and instruments at their religious feasts was that the people hungered and thirsted and died for lack of the Word:

Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land,
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the LORD:
Amos 8:12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east,
they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Is. 5:8 Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place,

Could they have musical instruments and get drunk at their religious festivals IF they regarded the work of God's hand?  No! The musical festivals was a MARK that they had no regard for man or god.

Eusebio Tanicala:  c) Amos 5:23 negates singing as well as stringed instruments, but why prohibit only the latter? To condemn musical instruments based on this passage automatically condemns singing.
Of course both vocal or instrumental rejoicing were prohibited in the synagogue or church in the wilderness.  The church did not "sing" in a tuneful way because the Bible is not metrical and you couldn't sing if your life depended on it.  No singer or instrument player could come CLOSE to any holy thing much less enter into the Holy Place as a type of the lost tabernacle or the Body of Christ.
The command for the holy convocation on the rest days was

Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time
        hath in every city
        them that preach him,
being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Paul puts the emphasis on SPEAK which excludes loud singing.  The style in the early church was not like that in Amos or in overly complex modern singing which has little teaching value.  If your songs are noisy then God isn't listening.   It was considered childish or effeminate to sing AND play at the same time.  Sing TO a harp meant that you plucked a string then sang to that note.  One did not sing and play simultaneous even in the Catholic church where the organ performed preludes, interludes and recessionals but not when the Psalms were being chanted. It is simple: if the sole purpose is to Teach the Word of Christ you don't sing AND play.

And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me,
        The end is come upon my people of Israel;
I will not again pass by them any more.
Amos 8:3 And the songs of the temple
shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD:
        there shall be many dead bodies in every place;
they shall cast them forth with silence.
HOWLINGS: H3213 yâlal yaw-lal' A primitive root; to howl (with a wailing tone) or yell (with a boisterous one):—(make to) howl,

H3611 keleb keh'-leb From an unused root meaning to yelp, or else to attack; a dog; hence (by euphemism) a male prostitute:—dog
Paul said that if you do not worship IN THE SPIRIT instead of IN THE FLESH the DOGS will invade with their old style PRAISE HOWLING. Amos has been fulfilled in all of those churches who USE musical worship teams where the sining is mere howling.
RATHER THAN PERMITTING ALL OF THE SINS AS LONG AS THEY HAD A GOOD ATTITUDE NOTE THE WORD BUT:

Amos 5:24 BUT, let judgment run down as waters,
and righteousness as a mighty stream.

As a result they offered sacrifices to the STARRY HOST and that is what God abandoned them to.

Amos 5:25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
Amos 5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images,
the STAR of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Acts 7:43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the STAR of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Zephaniah 1:5KJV And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham

Zephaniah 1:5NIV those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the LORD and who also swear by Molech
Amos 5:27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

NO: ALL OF THE ACTS WERE WRONG WITHIN THEMSELVES AND ALL OF CREDIBLE HISTORY AGREES.
