"Just thought I would drop you a note on Jubilee 98. Usually my wife and I plan our vacation around a church of Christ tent meeting in Franklin Tennessee. But this year we decided to base it on Jubilee 98. My church of Christ was looking forward to my attending it, saying "Steve's going to get some meat in Nashville". I went on Thursday morning at 9 am. Not much to say about the first two classes I went to. But then I went to the 11 o'clock keynote by Mike Cope called "lifting holy hands".
I was by myself and I sat way up in the top of the arena. Halfway through Copes speech, he invited everyone to lift their hands to the Lord, saying it was fine to do this, and pointed out biblical examples. He had a singer come on the stage and told us all that when the song got to the point where we'd be led to raise our hands (you'll know when" do it). Well, it was like "Simon says". Whenever the song said "raising holy hands", the hands shot up. Simon Says, RAISE YOUR HANDS! All but a few did this.
Then...he taught us how to lay hands on folks. He invited the elderly to stand up. Then the ministers. Then, the single parents. "Now, all of you still sitting, before we pray, head over to the nearest standing person, or group, and as we pray, lay hands on them". Well, I once gave a refrigerator to the Abigail pregnancy agency here in Norwalk Ohio. After the lady cleaned it up, she had me lay hands on the broken one, in case I fixed it, it would hopefully find a Godly home, and then we laid hands on the new one, to bless it, Benny Hinn style. So this laying hands stuff wasn't for me. Not that I'm a stinkpot about stuff. Heck, I wanted it to be good there in Nashville. A whole 2 week vacation depended on it.
(Note: Most people don't care what you do with your hands. The problem arises when it is sold as some magical way to get into the presence of God: to get the BAM. Therefore, the motive of Jubilee's expert change agents is to upset the equilibrium of happy believers so that as an opening wedge {music is defined as an opening wedge} they can drive a new musical-charismatic worship system inside. This has the further deliberate effort of alienating most churches of Christ who simply feel no need for artificial ritual or ceremony. ks)
But, by 12, I was out of there. By one, I was at a bookstore by Cool Springs Mall in Franklin, and regretting the fact that I was there. But God, as good as he is, supplied me with a Church of Christ meeting at the Craigfield (?) Church of Christ near my mom's house in Fairview Tennessee for the rest of the week. Just thought I'd let you know how much fun it was. Even my uncle ---- of Kemper heights Church of Christ in Madison laughed about it. Bad thing is that I'll have to tell my church here in Ohio how lousy it was.
I went to a thing in Columbus called "Summit" where some of the same preachers were last September. I took my 7 year old son with me. It was a highly recommended thing for a new Christian like me to go to. Well, they don't like musical instrumentation in worship, and they didn't have any. But they had this Christian rap group of men who made sounds like the record being played back and forth like the rappers do, and other stupid monkey noises that imitated the noises some of the rap singers make and use. That was from the heart. My son and I left and went to a computer store (best buys) and if you ask him what his favorite part of the week was in Columbus, he'd say,"playing ninetendo at the computer place". And mine? Just getting home. (Note: "Christian Rap Group." Isn't that the best oxymoron every invented? ks)
I wrote to Steven for permission to put his letter on the web as the best testimony I have ever heard and with more spiritual insight than the whole 1/4 million dollar (estimated) display of human talent at Jubilee 98. I asked him to expand on what he as an honest seeker of spiritual "meat" found lacking and anything he would like to say. He responded:
"Hello Kenneth; Anything I can add to your documentation of this would be fine. But I honestly believe the scope of it to be quite large. So deep that I believe a new congregation will develop, leaving the Church of Christ alone, but ashamed.
The first thing you must understand is the Summit put on by Walling and his group. Walling was the keynote speaker here also, with Shelly being the teacher of a class I attended. In this class he mentioned Jubilee for the first time, at least for my ears. He said it was possible that there'd be no Jubilee 98 due to lack of childcare. I walked up and stated that he should mail me the info on Jubilee 98, and my wife and I would help. This was before the next day, when the "rap group" ran us out with headaches.
However, I didn't pin the rap music with the men making the rap instrument noises with their mouths on Shelly or Walling. I wrote it off as modernism to attract the kids.
But I felt grieved inside due because while the Church of Christ will run down the musical instrumentation of the Baptists, saying it isn't from the soul, I could only wonder how much of the noisy man-mouthed instruments this group at Summit was from the soul. It was embarrassing to say the least. The Baptist would have gotten a good laugh from this non-instrumental junk.
So we based our vacation on Jubilee, and I must say that I was so bothered by this event, in only the three hours I was there, that I vowed to stick to the little white Churches and their Gospel Meetings from now on, except the tent meeting in Franklin the first week of June.
I'm embarrassed because my own church applauded the fact I was going. I'm embarrassed because the preacher (Mayberry) at my Mom's Church of Christ in Fairview ran it down weeks before it happened, which caused me to tell my mom "Brother Mayberry is a nittpicker" (He hammered Promise Keepers too a couple of years ago). I'm embarrassed because my slightly charismatic cousin, the daughter of my uncle --- of Kemper Heights in Madison Tennessee was enthused about going to Jubilee, especially to see Shelly, which sent out weird signals to me two days before Jubilee started making me think, "uh oh, if she wants to go, there's something wrong with it".
I'm embarrassed because I didn't see any reason why they just didn't go over to the former Twitty City where the Trinity Broadcasting Network has a big studio (nitty city) and hold this meeting there, since this same stuff is always on T.B.N. all night. I'm embarrassed because next year, my friends who looked for me in Franklin are going to be told by me why I didn't come to the Tent Meeting in Franklin in 1998.
I have a book put out by the Methodist years ago where they instruct members of this worship team how to teach new members how to speak in tongues. "Just make babbling sounds at first. Don't worry if it sounds like baby talk, just keep speaking, and the Holy Spirit will take over".
(Note: I watched the keynote on the 2" by 3" picture on my computer. I felt embarrassed but I was sure that I wasn't feeling the energy put out by all of the hand waving and music. I kept hallucinating thinking that I was seeing asherah poles fully erected on the stage. ks)
This was almost the same. Jubilee 2000 will be the same perhaps. This thing with Mr. Cope is on tape. But the tape in no way can give you the picture of how it was to be there. To listen to a singer sing a projected song overhead, and be told to raise the hands when the time comes, is not from the heart. It is self imposed manmade worship. When instructions are given to stand if you are and elderly person, minister, or a single parent, and then the ones still seated are told to meander over and lay hands on these folks at prayer, it is not from the heart. It is self imposed manmade worship. (Projected songs may be fine but not usable for older people with eye problems. It does keep the congregational input down where musical worship teams (another oxymoron) dominate.
(Note: Jeff Walling even made fun of his own mother for objecting to the loss of song books. When you have to upset the people who paid for the building just to be a "good little ole wineskin change agent" and when you cannot show increased spirituality won't there be hell to pay? I remember being told that at the initial planning sessions people were told that the old folks might have to be sacrificed! ks)
No one was around me to lay their hands on me over 4 years ago when I prayed to Jesus for the first time and was delivered from alcoholism. (Note: Steve, Jesus prayed in private, too.) I didn't have to raise my hands to be heard or seen by God. I didn't have to speak in tongues suddenly to prove to anyone that I was saved by Christ. No, I was too busy thanking the Lord for my new life and second opportunity to raise my kids, and love my wife. No special effects or lights. Just a trip to the knees and a prayer for forgiveness and help. And then the finishing touch of the Baptism in the water to make me new. So now I go anywhere possible learn as much pure doctrine as possible, and as for that 500 mile trip from here in northern Ohio to Nashville Tennessee, well, I'd been better off sitting at the gates of Opryland U.S.A. waiting for them to sell me a ticket to get in. And considering Opryland is closed, well, I'd still been happier, because I would have sat there reading the Bible, which is mostly more than I can say for the leaders of Jubilee considering the feeble amount of text they used.

"Randy, you scared me when you mentioned "new wine" and "wineskins" in your post. I just got back yesterday from a visit to Nashville to visit my folks, and to catch as many church meetings as I could. Normally I go in early June, but this year, there was a thing put on by the church of Christ called "Jubilee". It was a big thing where tapes would be for sale afterward by "Gaylord" for $500 if you wanted all 175 audio tapes. So this gives you an idea of the size and amount of teaching. I had based my vacation on this event this year.
It began on Wednesday night, but I didn't go because it was only in the evening. So on Thursday morning, I went to the first class at 9am. I was late, but the class was ok. The next class seemed to be one which mentioned "new ideas" in the church. Kind of strange for the conservative non-musical instrumentation" church of Christ. Then came the 11 o'clock keynote with a fellow named Cope. I think it was Mike Cope. To about 1500 people, he decided to teach us how to raise holy hands to God. A partner sang a song, and every time the song mentioned lifting holy hands, we were to lift our hands. Boy, it was kind of funny doing that. Seems that every time the singer mentioned the hands raising, it was like "simple Simon says". Hands flew up. I only wondered how many who raise the holy hands push the poor away when they lower them on Monday.
(Note: I thought I heard Mike claim that God's power flows through our hands to others. Didn't Jesus come to cut out the "middle man?" ks)
Then, Mr. Cope spoke on the laying of hands then said "now I want all of the elderly folks to stand. Now the single parents. Now the ministers. Now, all of you left sitting, I want you to gather around those who are standing, and when I pray, lay hands on them and keep them there". And 1499 people shifted around here and there and the prayer began and ended. To me, the 1500th who didn't move or pray, but watched, this instructional way of showing us how to worship, it was like the leading of sheep to confusion at the edge of a cliff. I left after the keynote by Cope and went to a store then home to my moms. Later that afternoon God supplied me with a little white Church that was holding a week long meeting, which for me was three days long, but better than the three hours of watching my church of Christ become the denomination they proudly say they aren't. I have yet to meet a country preacher or Church member who agrees with the church of Christ and their "new wineskins" movement. And I should have listened.
By the way Randy, your hypothesis on drinking in your letter is close to right on. And if it isn't right, it's good enough for this Christian.

My Church asked me how I liked Jubilee 98 today at services. Told them like it was, "absoulutely lousy".
Before we went down to Tennessee, I had told myself that I really needed a haircut. But I didn't have the time to get it cut before the trip, so I got it cut the day before I went to Jubilee in Nashville from my mothers home in Fairview Tennessee. The lady at the haircut shop asked me "how do
you want it cut?'. I said, "As if I were going to a Church of Christ gospel meeting".
She cut it short.
There's this country song that I really don't like, probably because it's sung by a woman and at the time I couldn't relate to the words. The song is called "Did I shave my legs for this?". I guess the woman had a big night planned with her man, but it didn't work out, even after she had shaved her legs for him. Yesterday afternoon as I was driving home from the store, I saw my sister in law walking on the road which goes in front of her home. I pulled over to chat a moment, and the first thing she said was "Steven, you got your haircut! It looks really nice!". She then asked how my trip to Tennessee was, and I said " well, bad".
Then I told her about the meeting with Cope and Co. and said "I even got my hair cut for them". Then I thought of that song, "Did I shave my legs for this?". And that's when I realized that I now relate to that song. "Did I cut my hair off, for this?". Just thought I'd share a little bad mood humor. Gotta tell you Ken, I was up until 3:45 this morning actually dreading church. I also noticed today that the
attendance is down to 68 over the last two weeks. Now my wife and I with the kids are 10% of the church.

Dear Steve,
Now you know that you have to build your relationship with Lord Jesus Christ and none other. I have been a church member for 56 of my 68 years, been a deacon, elder and Bible teacher. Church always left me a little bit frustrated (and still does) because I probably wanted too much from people just looking for something more meaningful.
You will always find the person with social "leprosy" and you will have to minister to them even when it "contaminates" you. Jesus never wasted His time on the spiritual pretenders who "took away the key to knowledge."
Church has a very important role to play especially for our children as they get grounded in some fundamentals. It performs valuable services to the community and an opportunity to remain close to those who share a common goal. In the beginning it did not try to do too many things and a small group focused upon taking care of its local "cell" without trying to be a part of a large denomination.Its focus was to read the Word as the "already preached sermons" and "already composed songs."
Those looking for "spiritual lovers" will always regret that "they shaved their legs for this." Any group which attracts its audience by the fame of its speakers is "buying their bodies" to serve the goals of the movement. In the first century Feast of Tabernacles Jesus refused to go and become a "man of note."
Even in the beginning the church had its false men "seeing godliness as a means of financial gain" and telling the world that what they had to say was more important than what Christ taught. They even had people saying, "I am of Rubel Shelly or I am of Max Lucado or I am of Mike Cope." Paul asked: "Was Mike Cope crucified for you?" The answer is obvious, he did not. And if you find yourself looking to "those trained in the Greek theaters" just remember that it works like all drama works: "Because we know that it isn't true."
Lord Jesus Christ cannot "really" be lifted up except by the meek and this will never be done with trained drama and music. When we really lift up Jesus we will find ourselves getting dirty and blood-stained.
As evil men always try to jump between you and your Savior you will just have to keep your eyes on Him and His Word. To find Him you may have to look down - to the Bible in your lap. I just laugh (and weep) when they jump around waving their hands saying, "I just want you to see Jesus and not me." They are filling up the cup of God's wrath and you must not watch it.
Now that your church knows that there is no magic in Tennessee perhaps you can be the servant of Christ by pointing them to more Bible study "as it has been written" without cutting it up into pieces. None of these gurus have anything which you cannot have free of charge in the Word. If I can be of help let me know.
Having confessed your disappointment you will sleep better tonight!

I hope you will "give a cup of cold water" to a spiritual leader who truly hungers and thirsts for the Word of God, travels "to and fro" looking for it but gets more harm than good from the merchants of books and new wine. Please just click on Steven Littlejohn and tell him that Jubilee is just the spiritual DTs from too much denominational and pride wine and that "it, too, shall pass." They represent only a tiny sect of churches of Christ who try, always imperfectly, to lift up Jesus rather than men of note.
I am sure that Steven is embarrassed at the ignorance of claiming that the Incarnate God of the universe wants the church to be "bubbling in the vat, sparkling, bites like an adder wine in a new wineskin." He is embarrassed that other preachers are forced to "take their hands from the plow to" warn against Jubilee.
Those "drunk on pure ignorance" deny that Amos had anything negative to say about musical festivals as they were just waiting for the book sales using false balances and claiming inspiration to begin. However, the scholarship of the world disagree with the change agents about Amos, Job, Isaiah and Ezekiel. Amos warned of the pagan worship of Israel in the wilderness which always involved musical worship. This was enhanced under David and Solomon as they drove the God-built nation into becoming a ruined vineyard while chanting to musical instruments and fermenting (spoiling) and drinking up the food product (Isa 5):
Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it? Am 5:20
I hate, I despise your feast days (Jubilee is a feast day for atonement), and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Am 5:21

Musical worship among the urban luxury class while ridiculing rural songs and worship was not really the cause of their total ruin. Rather, musical, charismatic speaking, singing, effeminate hand waving, musical instruments and self praise (halal) has always been a sign of doom for those who would divide God's people:

The techniques of mass meetings where it is insisted that everyone participate in one way or another is a coercive effort to force change. While most secure believers don't naturally have an urge to wave their hands over their heads as an act of worship, most of us don't get upset if someone decides to do it. It is only when change agents decide that they have to introduce charismatic rituals to "break down the resistance" that even the most conservative people would object.
Some people have a strong Biblical and intrinsic nature which makes them believe that such a forced act is wrong. They are doubters or are strongly convicted. Therefore, to entice 1500 or so people to engage in the ceremonial legalism of hand-raising to the beat of a charismatic song is a temptation to sin. The strong-arm technique is always at work when music is used and the entire audience is called upon to participate and to endorse when to resist would make objectors and doubters feel "unspiritual" and stick-in-the-muds.
Because the speaker quoted but distorted the meaning of the "hand raising" passages, it is clear that this was a calculated change-agentry distortion to move the agenda of Jubilee and sister mass movements outside the walls and into the embrace of denominationalism.

"RAISE THE VIBRATIONS - to accelerate the vibrations in an area by fast, loud, jolly songs, by clapping and stamping in rhythm, or by playing loud fast music; frequently done to give energy to the etheric world intelligences to perform physical phenomena in a seance; used in charismatic meetings to put the sitters onto a spiritual high and to give energy to the healing forces working within the leader. P.S. The Asherah poles (columns) theme has always been used to portray male power and was an affront to God Who cannot be manipulated sexually. Like the term "new wineskins," the asherah poles are what Joseph Campbell, in Myths to Live by, calls affect images as true, mystical change agents. Whether you know it or not, the new wine flows into your veins.
