Women in God's Service: Jesus' Life and Teaching

Rubel Shelly: In a distinctly religious setting, the office of priest was limited to males in the priestly line (Ex. 28:1; Num. 18:1-7); beyond this restriction, however, there was significant freedom for Israel's daughters.

1. "They served Yahweh at the door of the tabernacle (Ex. 38:8)

When Israel ROSE UP TO PLAY this was the Musical Idolatry of the Egyptian trinity. God broke THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT OF GRACE and gave them THE BOOK OF THE LAW to legislate for the lawless. ALL non-clergy were now excluded from the Tabernacle. This became a Place for MOSES ONLY to hear the voice of God.

"The triumphal hymn of Moses had unquestionably a religious character about it; but the employment of music in religious services, though idolatrous, is more distinctly marked in the festivities which attended the erection of the golden calf." (Smith's Bible Dictionary, Music, p. 589).

Clement condemns the sOPHISts (serpents):

We must be conversant with the art of reasoning, for the purpose of confuting the deceitful opinions of the sophists. Well and felicitously, therefore, does Anaxarchus write in his book respecting "kingly rule: ""Erudition benefits greatly and hurts greatly him who possesses it; it helps him who is worthy, and injures him who utters readily every word, and before the whole people. It is necessary to know the measure of time. For this is the end of wisdom.

And those who sing at the doors, even if they sing skilfully, are not reckoned wise, but have the reputation of folly." And Hesiod:-

"Of the Muses, who make a man loquacious, divine, vocal."

For him who is fluent in words he calls loquacious; and him who is clever, vocal; and "divine," him who is skilled, a philosopher, and acquainted with the truth.

Ephraim Syrus On Our Lord notes that Sinai was a test. The Israelites were consummate idolaters in Egypt. However, God gave them one more shot at the Abrahamic Covenant. By removing Moses as a visible "authority figure" He wanted to let them answer their own prayer:

18. But when their heathenism from being inward became open, then Moses also from being hidden openly appeared; that he might openly punish those whose heathenism had revelled beneath the holy cloud which had overshadowed them.

But God removed the Shepherd of the flock from it for forty days, that the flock might show that its trust was fixed upon the calf.

And he was there in the wilderness forty days tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Mark 1:13

While God was feeding the flock with all delights, it chose for itself as its Shepherd the calf, which was not able even to eat.

Moses who kept them in awe was removed from them, that the idolatry might cry aloud in their mouths,

which the restraint of Moses had kept down in their hearts. For they cried: Make us gods, to go before us.

19. But when Moses came down, he saw their heathenism revelling in the wide plain with drums and cymbals.

Speedily, he put their madness to shame by means of the Levites and drawn swords.

"In the New Testament there is nowhere any emphasis laid on the musical form of the hymns; and in particular none on instrumental accompaniment whereas this is significantly paganism." (Delling, Gerhard, Worship in the New Testament, trans. Percy Scott Phil. Westminster press, 1962, p. 86).

Because of this MUSICAL IDOLATRY the Levites killed 3,000 of their tribe because they MUST BEAR the sins of the congregation. Only Male Levites served in this WARRIOR and MUSICAL leadership.

"A stranger," that is, one, neither a priest nor a Levite, who should intrude into any departments of the sacred office, should incur the penalty of death. ROBERT JAMIESON

The context proves that the women DID NOT serve God:

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the Lord; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin. Exod 32:30

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Exod 32:31

Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. Exod 32:32

And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. Exod 32:33

Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: NEVERTHELESS in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them. Exod 32:34

And the Lord PLAGUED the people, because they made the CALF, which Aaron made. Exod 32:35

AND the Lord said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and THE PEOPLE which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto ABRAHAM, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy SEED will I give it: Exod 33:1

And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: Exod 33:2

Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I WILL NOT GO up in the midst of thee; for thou art a STIFFNECKED people: lest I CONSUME thee in the way. Exod 33:3

And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments. Exod 33:4

For the Lord had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and CONSUME THE: therefore now put off thy ORNAMENTS from thee, THAT I MAY KNOW WHAT TO DO UNTO THEE. Exod 33:5

And the children of Israel STRIPPED themselves of their ORNAMENTS by the mount Horeb. Exod 33:6

And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it WITHOUT the camp, AFAR off from the CAMP, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the Lord went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp. Exod 33:7

Rubel Shelly Claims: They served Yahweh at the door of the tabernacle (Ex. 38:8)

But GOD Said: And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at HIS TENT DOOR and looked AFTER Moses, until he was GONE INTO the tabernacle. Exod 33:8

And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses. Exod 33:9

And all the people [tribe, man] saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in HIS tent door. Exod 33:10

By utterly contradicting God the Spirit this is a certain MARK.

Baptized believers may come boldly before the throne of Grace which was symbolized by the Most Holy Place.

Christ our "Earthly" Pillar now stands there as the ONLY MEDIATOR to his MAJESTY AND GLORY. Male and female do not need--cannot tolerate--a latter day "priests" to accompany him or her into God's presence.

THERE ARE NO PRIESTLY ROLLS FOR EITHER MALE OR FEMALE TO LUST AFTER. THE SOLUTION IS NOT TO ADD WOMEN AS PERFORMERS AND USURPERS BUT CAUSE THE MALE PERFORMERS TO SIT DOW AND REMAIN SILENT.

In the Tabernacle there was NO MUSICAL WORSHIP LEADERS. In the Temple, the male warrior Levites were in the court where they SACRIFICED tens of thousands of types of Jesus Christ their God whom they had always rejected. No woman or male "singer" entered into the Holy Place which was a TYPE of the body or church of Christ. This was so HOLY that no singers or musicians could enter. This is true because Jesus defined His BODY or CHURCH as a SYNAOGUE: you GIVE HEED to the Word of God to be a DISCIPLE of CHRIST. Any noise or disturbance is CALCULATED to make being a DISCIPLE (as opposed to a legalistic, ritualistic "worshiper") remotely possible. Jesus was prophesied NOT to call the assemblies of the NEW STYLE WORSHIPERS. He promised to be in the MIDST of two or three "synagogued" in HIS name. Two or three thousand screaching and screaming PRAISE SONGS is deliberately PLANNED to "take away the key to knowledge."

Women were not required at the annual festivals. The SACRIFICES at these festivals was to MUSTER DRAFT AGE MALES--only. Women were never permitted in the holy areas during sacrifices where the WARRIOR LEVITES made a great crashing sound to signal non-clergy to be OUTSIDE THE GATES where they must bow or fall on their faces/

God limits the Tabernacle to the male clergy only. MAN means MAN and WOMAN means WOMAN. Women were not ENROLLED and were not required to MUSTER:

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: SHE shall be called WOMAN, because she was taken out of MAN. Genesis 2:23

IIysh (h376) eesh; contr. for 582 [an enrolled person] ... a man as an individual or a male person, husband] man, (good-, great, mighty) man, he, high (degree), him (that is), husband, steward, what (man) soever, whoso (-ever), worthy. Comp. 801 [ used in a liturgical sense]

Ishsah (h802) ish-shaw'; FEMININE. of 376 or 582; a woman (used in the same wide sense as 582): - [adulter]ess, each, every, female, * many, / none, one, / together, wife, woman. Often unexpressed in English

One woman who got to te DOOR of the Tabernacle

God used Miriam as a prototypical rebellous woman: her name means BITTER and REBELLIOUS.

And they said, Hath the Lord indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the Lord heard it. Numbers 12:2

And the Lord spake suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam, Come out ye three unto the tabernacle of the congregation. And they three came out. Numbers 12:4

And the Lord came down in the pillar of the cloud, and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam: and they both came forth. Numbers 12:5

And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet (male) among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. Numbers 12:6 However, of Moses

With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches (riddles); and the similitude (shape or phantom) of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? Numbers 12:8

And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them; and he departed. Numbers 12:9

And the cloud departed from off the tabernacle; and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow: and Aaron looked upon Miriam, and, behold, she was leprous [scourged]. Numbers 12:10

Miriam was not a leader but a misleader:

I sent MOSES also and Aaron, and I PLAGUED Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out. Joshua 24:5

Take heed in the PLAGUE of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites (males) shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do. Deut 24:8

Remember what the Lord thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt. Deut 24:9

Rubel claimes to take liberties. Therefore, it is difficult to discourse with one who claims that "we have to work out our salvation" meaning that we have to derive a Scripture for OUR culture. But, isn't it going too far when there is a DIRECT CONTRADICTION between te Rubel Shelly version and that of the Spirit of Christ?

Rubel Shelly: They served Yahweh at the door of the tabernacle (Ex. 38:8)

GOD: And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at HIS TENT DOOR and looked AFTER Moses, until he was GONE INTO the tabernacle. Exod 33:8

Don't you see that it was GOD'S ANGEL (or Christ the Spirit) WHO stood at the door? Is it impossible to see that the WOMEN didn't stand at the door except to be scourged with leprosy for pretending that she spoke for God in His Angel?

Rubel blames the rabbi for CHANGING the status of women.

Rubel Selly: The list of particulars could go on. But these facts are certainly adequate to establish the nature of the environment for women that Jesus "inherited" from the rabbis who had come before him. One suspects that just such human restrictions layered onto Holy Writ are what Jesus had in mind when he told a group of Pharisees and scribes this:

You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:
'This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;

in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines' " (Matt. 15:7-9).

The Pharisees were men who invented their own NEW VISION so that they could repudiate the Laws of God. They made long songs and sermons and prayers. Their goal was the EAT UP THE HOUSES OF WIDOWS. They were the SECTARIAN false preachers.

Most of what is called CHURCH and WORSHIP is from teaching human precepts as doctrines. There is not LAW OF SINGING, no LAW OF GIVING, no "sermonic" preaching, no PERFORMANCE singers or musicians. Jesus built a synagogue or SCHOOL OF THE BIBLE. With the meeting purpose to eat the Lord's Supper everything else is IN VAIN because it is taught by Pharisees meaning rhetoricians or sOPHISts (serpents) in order to SILENCE the Word of God.

The Hypocrites was a SECTARIAN GROUP in Judaism and in the Greek world. They were called PARASITES because they kept on performing sacrificial tasks and holding Jubilees when their gods had failed or when Jesus FIRED the doctors of the law.

This passage can fit only those on the PAYROLL after Jesus firec the "doctors of the law" and the hypocrites--theatrical performers.

There is another version which shows that music and sexual love was the goal of the Jews. As Ezekiel associated musical worship with sexual abnormality even against God, Paul associated instruments with the LOVE of seeking the voices of angels. This is quite identical to the Witch of Endor and her "musical instrument" or familiar spirit. It was made of an EMPTY WINESKIN. Now, to Ezekiel

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. Ezek 33:30

And they come unto thee as the people cometh,
and they sit before thee as my people,

and they hear thy words,
but they will not do them:

for with their mouth they shew much love (abnormal),

but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ezek 33:31

And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. Ezek 33:32

And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. Ezek 33:33

Egeb (h5690) eh'-gheb, from 5689; love (concr.), i. e. amative words: - much love, very lovely.

Agab (h5689) aw-gab'; a prim. root; to breathe after, i. e. to love (sensually): - dote, lover.

Exactly what is happening in the NEW STYLE WORSHIP replacing the WORD in the synagogue or school of the Bible, is condemned by these passages. People will let YOU conform to their practices of instrumental music and denying the role of baptism but THEY will despise you because you have proven to be treacherous: the lovers will eat your flesh and gnaw your bones and after being USED you will be a laughingstock for breaking down the walls so the wolves could get your lambs:

And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. Je.4:30

And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them. Ezek 23:17

So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister. Ezek 23:18

Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt. Ezek 23:19

For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses. Ezek 23:20

Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth. Ezek 23:21

Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side; Ezek 23:22

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ. Gen 4:21

Taphas (h8610) The sons of Lamech (Ea as patron god of music in Babylon) used musical instruments like "carnal weapons" to capture people often to rape them:

1) to catch, handle, lay hold, take hold of, seize, wield

a) (Qal)

1) to lay hold of, seize, arrest, catch
2) to grasp (in order to) wield, wield, use skilfully
b) (Niphal) to be seized, be arrested, be caught, be taken, captured
c) (Piel) to catch, grasp (with the hands)

She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. Ge.39:12

by sleeping with another man, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), Nu.5:13

Hippolytus and Aquila:

Aquila: "Let (Dan) be," meaning by that, that there shall be a multitude of persecutors in Dan like a "serpent lying by the way on the path, stinging the horse's heel," i.e., giving fierce and dangerous bites; for the bites of snakes are generally very dangerous. And they were "in the heel" in particular. for "he shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." And some did persecute the holy apostles in this way even to the death of the flesh. And thus we may say that their position was something like that when a horse stumbles and flings out his heels. For in such a case the horseman will be thrown, and, falling to the ground, I suppose, he waits thus for some one alive. And thus, too, the inspired apostles survive and wait for the time of their redemption,

when they shall be called into a kingdom which cannot be moved, when Christ addresses them with the word, "Come, ye blessed of my Father, ' {Matt. xxv, 34. etc.

And again, if any one will take the words as meaning, not that there will be some lying in wait against Dan like serpents, but that this Dan himself lies in wait against others,

we may say that those meant thereby are the scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites who,
while in possession of the power of judgment and instruction among the people,
fastened like snakes upon Christ, and strove impiously to compass His fall, vexing Him with their stings as He held on in His lofty and gentle course.

But if that horseman did indeed fall, He fell at least of His own will, voluntarily enduring the death of the flesh. And, moreover, it was destined that He should come to life again, having the Father as His helper and conductor.
........... For the Son, being the power of God the Father,
........... endued the temple of His own body again with life.

Thus is He said to have been saved by the Father, as He stood in peril as a man, though by nature He is God, and Himself maintains the whole creation, visible and invisible, in a state of wellbeing. In this sense, also, the inspired Paul says of Him: "Though He was crucified in weakness, yet He liveth by the power of God." 31

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. John 10:17

No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. John 10:18

Mary Magdalene was not a LEADER but a follower:

AND it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, Luke 8:1

And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, Luke 8: 2

And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herods steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. Luke 8: 3
